A Season on the Mat: Dan Gable and the Pursuit of Perfection, by Nolan Zavoral

For twenty-one years, Dan Gable's Iowa Hawkeyes dominated wrestling to an extent rarely seen in any sport: twenty-one consecutive Big 10 titles and fifteen national championships. In A Season on the Mat, award-winning reporter Nolan Zavoral explores Iowa's storied wrestling program and Gable's record of excellence in an unprecedented, intimate look at the man and his methods during his final season as a head coach.

A Season on the Mat chronicles the dramatic 1996-97 season, in which Gable led his team -- far from his most talented -- to a record-breaking performance at the national championship, at which it scored the most points in collegiate wrestling history. Zavoral takes the reader behind the scenes into the stifling heat of the wrestling room, where young men from places like Rock Falls, Illinois, or Philip, South Dakota, sacrifice everything they have just to be a part of the Hawkeye program.

From his difficult upbringing, interrupted by the tragedy of his sister's brutal murder, through the single defeat that haunts him to this day, to the ups and downs of his phenomenal coaching career, Gable has come to symbolize to many all that is special about this demanding, elemental sport. Part biography, part chronicle, part portrait of this unique subculture, A Season on the Mat is the best and most thorough look at one of the most important and most overlooked figures in American athletics.

I Thoroughly Enjoyed This Book
By CPT Trainer/Behaviorist
A Season on the Mat is a story with three main characters: 1) Dan Gable, 2) The University of Iowa wrestling team, and 3) The team's varsity starters. The book is written in a compelling manner with excellent character development. I found myself cheering (sometimes almost out loud) when reading of the success of the team and the team's key athletes. Similarly, I found myself sorrowful when reading about their rare moments of failure.

Nevertheless, the key character within the book is wrestling icon Dan Gable. Zavoral does an excellent job of providing an objective portrayal of Gable that should satisfy both the amateur wrestling aficionado and the uninitiated. I enjoyed reading about the life of Dan Gable; his relationship with his parents, his wife, his children, the state of Iowa, the University of Iowa administration, his assistant coaches, and his wrestlers; and the two key life moments that motivated him to worker harder than anyone else to reach the pinnacle as a wrestler and coach. Moreover, whereas most Gable biographies are written by sycophants who communicate only Gable's venerable qualities, Zavoral is equitable in also discussing Gable's eccentricities.

Most reviewers have written favorably (and I would say accurately) regarding A Season on the Mat. Yet, a minority of reviewers have stated that the book lacks "justice," is "cheerless," and is "shallow." To this specious minority I say, "We must not have been reading the same book." The book provides justice in its balanced and detailed depiction of Dan Gable. Furthermore, I found myself almost cheering out loud when Gable's athletes overcame adversity via sweat and hard work to finally reach the podium at the culmination of a long and arduous season.

Yes, the book is a little "shallow" when detailing the histories and experiences of the team's varsity starters or when describing the rigors of weight cutting or a Dan Gable practice. However, the book is not intended to be a 900 page tome that provides each character the same importance and coverage as the title character, Dan Gable. Nor is the book intended to be an encyclopedia of everything one needs to do to succeed at wrestling. Rather, the book is intended as a chronicle of the trials, tribulations, travails and outcomes relative to Gable's last season as Head Coach of the University of Iowa wrestling program. Therein, the book is highly successful as a quick, entertaining, page turner that tells a meritorious story of personal and athletic achievement.

If you like Dan Gable and want to know more about him
By Ritzy
If you like Dan Gable and want to know more about him, this is a great biography. While it mainly deals with 1 season with the Hawkeyes, the author talks about Gable lots.
The author talks some about wrestling as a sport such as rules of the sport, what is a single and double lake takedown, etc, that takes away from the book. I assume anyone reading this book already knows about that and makes the book even longer than it already is and is NOT needed.
While there are some elementary parts, the book overall gives us, readers a real look at what wrestlers sacrifice. This book gives all former wrestlers a true reminiscence of what it was like compete.

The book is long and the font is small but the book is DEFINITELY engaging and you will appreciate all the details of what a season on the mat with the Hawkeyes is truly about.

Somewhat cheerless, and poorly written
By A Customer
Though sort of a one dimensional attempt at deifying wrestling legend Dan Gable, Nolan Zovoral is a little out of his element here. He seems to be grasping at something that he either fails to grasp, or can't convey if he does. Though I was a quite successful at wrestling at a period about 4 years after Gable, and have been involved in the sport for over 25 years, this story leaves me turned off. Perhaps it's because of it's incredibly narrow path -- one I consciously selected NOT to follow. Sure, it's very interesting, up to a point, to know about Gable's life at Iowa -- but one gets the impression he really had no other life, period. Brief sketches of his family life don't tie into the theme very well, and one is introduced to his wife on a bleak winter bus trip to a wrestling match as she stares straight ahead -- apparently not in tune with the banter going on in the bus. The story (not autobiographical, as one 'critic' above has said) switches clumsily back and forth between Gable's one dimensional youth and his final year of coaching -- usually with bus ride scenarios or in the wrestling room. Gable's parents are painted narrowly, his dad drinking and his mother smoking, with ocassional fist fights breaking out between them; there doesn't seem to be much of anything in the waywidening their children's interests. We get to know his mother as she smokes and cooks meals for Gable and his Olympic training partners. I mean there must have been more family wamth than that going on!! Gable always seems to be sitting in the stands, hobbling about on crutches, or even once in awhile offering coaching advice...? Though an incredible wrestling figure, perhaps the most revered name in wrestling, one has to wonder: what's it worth? Several back, knee and hip operations (one waiting for him at the end of every very painful season) have left him a physical mess, while still under 50! Gable's coaching success has to be weighed in the balance with other, less positive aspects of his seemingly very narrow life. And wrestling readers should grasp this unspoken message as well as that which is written. The positive things about the book show what the best can do when totally focused on their goals. What is it that they do then, when these goals are obtained? Coach wrestling. This book surely does little to soften the image of wrestling. It's really suitable reading for well, wrestlers. Who else would want to run thru an entire season on a bus, in a wrestling room or in a sauna? Hell, even hardcore wrestlers get damned sick of that after awhile...
