Some of Lindsey's best recent work

Lady Ophelia Reid is, without a doubt, the reigning beauty of the London social scene. She has the face of an angel and the haughty demeanor to back it up--combined these two qualities keep her name on the tip of every London gossip's mouth. She becomes an even bigger topic of conversation when she breaks off her engagement to a brooding Scotsman with a lofty title--twice. With rumors circulating about the cause of the broken engagement, and the realization that her so-called friends are really spiteful and vindictive, Ophelia wants nothing more than to return to London and go back about the business of finding herself a husband. With her face and notoriety, she knows that the scandal won't be off-putting to her potential suitors.

Reputed rake Raphael Locke, Viscount Lynnfield and heir to a dukedom, is friends with Ophelia's jilted ex-fiance and finds it hard to believe that such a beautiful young woman is beyond redemption. Everyone else seems willing to believe that Ophelia is a lying, manipulative rumormonger who will do anything to get her own way. Rafe, on the other hand, believes that everyone can change, and makes a bet to that effect. Johanna Lindsey has always been one of my favorite romance authors and, in the past, her stories never failed to leave me satisfied and eagerly anticipating her next effort. That being said, it bears mentioning that The Devil Who Tamed Her features two characters from a previous novel, The Heir, whose futures were left in question at the end of that story. In all honesty, I didn't like The Heir, didn't really care for Ophelia in that novel, and haven't been impressed with about the last five novels Lindsey's put out (If you've never read Captive of My Desires and Marriage Most Scandalous, consider yourself warned to run the other way). But The Devil Who Tamed Her has almost redeemed Lindsey in my eyes. It was not only good, it was great, and reminded me of how good Lindsey's work can be when she puts a little effort into it. Having read a number of her books, I can say that she hit her stride right around the late 80's and early 90's (Prisoner of My Desire and Love Me Forever, anyone?) and her more recent efforts have just been sub-par, halfhearted efforts designed at keeping her at the top of the bestseller's lists and not with giving her fans the stories they've come to know and love.

Not so with this story. I couldn't have cared less about Ophelia at the end of The Heir (another Lindsey novel I wasn't particularly impressed with), but in this story she was an engaging and fun to read about heroine. Her transformation from vengeful shrew to thoughtful companion was a joy to watch and it was great to finally know the motivation behind her previous vicious actions. In addition, Rafe Locke was the type of hero you can dream about and just wish that you could meet a man like him. He takes his decision to help Ophelia mend her broken reputation seriously, and the bet takes a backseat to his genuine interest in seeing her achieve her full potential. These two are a couple that you can root for and be happy when they finally find a way to make it work. I've got to say that as a Lindsey fan, this is the best she's come in a long time to showing me the kind of work I know she's capable of. That being said, it's no Prisoner of My Desire. But if you take into consideration the work she's been doing lately, and the quality of this story in comparison, I think any Lindsey fan will agree that this is some of her best recent work.

Very Good!

I really liked this book. I have been a long time Lindsey fan and this one did not disappoint! I didn't LOVE the book about Duncan and Sabrina, but I did like it (perhaps I was just annoyed about Duncan addressing Sabrina as "Brina lass." yuck). This book is better because the characters are well developed. It was probably very difficult for Lindsey to figure out how to redeem Ophelia but she actually did it! Some of the explanations for her previous actions were a little hard to digest and believe, but overall I think JL did a good job of writing the character.

Lucy Jo Palladino, PhD, is the author of Dreamers, Discoverers, and Dynamos: How to Help the Child Who Is Bright, Bored, and Having Problems in School (formerly titled The Edison Trait). Find Your Focus Zone will help you get back on track and answer that critical question. Now more than ever, social media, e.g., YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, your PDA, iPhone or your Crackberry is vying for your attention. Do these applications and devices deserve it, or are you negating your work at hand? As a culture we are all experiencing information and cognitive overload-- like that Bing Search Overload commercial on TV, but author Lucy Jo Palladino offers many solutions and/or "keychains" as she labels them to keep us on task and in our Focus Zone. Through the proper balance of stimulation and learning to regulate this balance you will begin to "flow" once again and regain your focus. Attention is power and all creative endeavors require it. Learn the techniques of mindful multitasking, thought substitution, mental rehearsal like professional athletes and finish the task or reach that goal. Learn to block out distraction once and for all.
I'll leave you with this one study conducted by the University of California, Irvine: it was reported that employees spent an average of eleven minutes working on a project before they were interrupted and had to shift to another task. It then took them an average of twenty-five minutes to get back to their original task... could this be you?

Great gift for an upcoming military leader

Purchased as a gift to one of my ROTC Cadets to begin their professional library. As part of a class assignment I asked each cadet what book would they no-kidding read, military or not, related to their academic major or not. After I compiled the list of books for the class I went online and ordered all the books from Amazon. I placed them at their seats prior to class and allowed them to enter the room w/o me being present for the first five minutes. It was, and still is, one of the good teaching moments of our time together. Thanks for helping me fulfill a need in their soon-to-be military career.

Out of the 3 Little Lady Agency books, this is probably only very slightly below the other two. I still thoroughly enjoyed this book and Melissa's new adventures in new york. If you have not read the Little Lady Agency books, then GET ON IT!! They are fantastic. I cannot say enough wonderful things about these books, I try to push them on everyone I talk to. I have even bought copies for friends. It's even in mass market paper back, so if you are foolish enough to not like them, it wont set you back very much. Cheap entertainment in tough economic times. I wish it would become a movie...

A so-so sequel...

I'm sorry to say I was disappointed in this sequel. It just wasn't up to par with Little Lady Agency. It was still a light, breezy quick read but it lacked the laugh-out-loud moments and fun of the first.

The plot was a little too predictable and boring. Melissa's apartment is being renovated and she needs a place to stay. Her family is pretty much out of the question so she hopes Jonathan will let her stay with him. Instead he asks Melissa to go on holiday with him to New York. I was disappointed because here she is in America and there are plenty of men who could use her sort of help and she does nothing. I understand that Jonathan didn't want her to do her "work" but those Honey escapades- her interactions with her clients- are what made the first so enjoyable.

If it wasn't the dead of winter, I'd call it a good beach read...

Maybe if your expectations aren't too high, you'll enjoy it more than I did. Unfortunately, I had expected as good as or better than the original and it just didn't meet those standards.

Good Points and Bad Points

First the good points about this books.

1. This is Philippa Gregory, so you know that the writing will be well done and the research thorough
2. Very interesting take on the relationship between Mary, Queen of Scots and her husband Bothwell

Now the bad points:

1. As others have noted, practically nothing happens in this book. It drags
2. Most of the action happened in the past and is being retold
3. Unlike TOBG which had snappy dialogue that made you keep turning the pages, this feels like one long monologue told by several different people all droning on and on

It's not a bad book, but nor is it terribly compelling.

"The Other Queen" is about Mary, Queen of Scots' imprisonment in England, focusing on the early years of her imprisonment. Like "The Boleyn Inheritance", the story alternates between three perspectives. The narrators are George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife, Bess of Hardwick who were charged with responsibility for the Queen; the third narrator is Mary, Queen of Scots. Bess is an ambitious social climber who initially thinks that hosting Queen Mary will be a way to advance the family fortunes, but who is dismayed to find that it drains their financial resources instead. George on the other hand becomes infatuated with the Queen, which causes irreparable friction in his own marriage.

I've enjoyed other books by Philippa Gregory, but The Other Queen lacks momentum. It's a long book and not a lot happens (and when things do happen, they're invariably taking place somewhere else, rather than happening to the characters who are telling the story). You get the feeling that most of the exciting parts of Mary's life have already taken place, so there is lots of time spent filling in her back story. I enjoyed the book in a mild way, but it felt so repetitive: countless variations on Bess complaining about money, George idealizing Mary and Mary telling us how charming she is. Bess was actually quite a remarkable woman for her time, but she comes across as being so unpleasant that she failed to elicit my sympathy. I was also disappointed that Elizabeth I barely appears - only in one short scene, when Talbot goes to London to meet with her.

As always, Philippa Gregory has done her research. I didn't necessarily agree with her interpretation of Mary's personality, but I couldn't fault it on historical grounds. It did feel however as if she couldn't quite make up her mind what the nature of Mary and Bothwell's relationship had been and why Mary had chosen to marry him, which I think is something that she needed to establish more clearly. Towards the end of the book events also get twisted and compressed, presumably to bring about a neater conclusion. Mary's execution (still 15 years away) is described in a dream sequence: couldn't Philippa Gregory come up with a better way to include it?

I kept waiting for the book to get going, but it never really did. At one stage Bess writes: "I can hardly believe that this nightmare goes on, goes on and on, and we never achieve victory and we never achieve peace". In many ways that reflects how I felt about the book. It's not a bad book, but nor is it terribly compelling.

In 1568, Mary Queen of Scots sought refuge in England. She has trusted Elizabeth I's promise of sanctuary only to find herself imprisoned on Elizabeth's behalf by George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, and his wife Bess of Hardwick.

Ms Gregory has taken the familiar story of the imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots in England and presented the viewpoints of those obliged by Queen Elizabeth to act as her gaolers. The impact on the Shrewsburys should not be underestimated: keeping Mary Queen of Scots captive was not without its costs (both monetary and political). While Mary herself lived, she was both wittingly and unwittingly a focal point for political and religious intrigue.

In terms of the main characters in the novel, Mary herself comes across as manipulative and naive. Bess of Hardwick is far more interesting than her husband George, while Elizabeth herself is torn between removing the threat to her throne and herself and a reluctance to execute a fellow monarch. Ms Gregory presents an intriguing, if not always exciting, picture of a number of people thrown together by fate. This particular version of the story, focussed as it is on Mary's long period of imprisonment, not likely to bring much joy to those who prefer to see more action or a more sympathetic depiction of Mary. I enjoyed the novel without being fully swept up by it.

Chapter 1

A Whole New World

    “Mrs. Shearin wants you to come to her room. Hurry!”Marcy was out of breath from running when she appeared in myoffice door at the small private school where I was thecurriculum coordinator. I quickly followed her through thelibrary and down the elementary hall to Mrs. Shearin’ssecond-grade room. Marcy opened the door, and we stepped into aclassroom frozen in awe.

   Nine students stood motionless behind their desks facing thereading table in the back corner. No one moved or looked in ourdirection as we softly closed the door. A child’s voicesmoothly intoning sentence after sentence—never missing aword—was the only sound in the room. The other children,still seated at the reading table, were no longer looking attheir books but were watching in amazement as their classmateread the text flawlessly. Mrs. Shearin glanced at me with anastonished expression, nodded toward the reader, and turned herattention quickly back to her manual.

   The reader was Allen, a child who entered our school after havingattended five other schools in the previous two years. Hisrecords showed excessive absences, poor academic progress, andfrequent discipline problems. His mother had pleaded for hisadmittance, citing his needs to be in a stable atmosphere and tomake friends who were interested in learning. After promising tocooperate with the staff during his adjustment period and makinga commitment to his regular attendance, his mother’s requestwas granted.

   The first few weeks were difficult. Sheri Shearin was known as aconsistent, loving but firm disciplinarian whose goal wasrestoring children to productive learning. Allen stretched all ofthese qualities to the extreme. In the beginning, he wouldsometimes get so frustrated with schoolwork that he blurted outwords that would normally evoke a swift and severe reprimand. Butinstead, Sheri would call him to her desk, put her arm around himand say, “Those words are just not tolerated in this school.When you don’t know what to do, raise your hand andI’ll help you. Now, tell me what you are going to do thenext time you feel like that.” After he rehearsed thecorrect procedure, Sheri would assure him that she loved him andbelieved in his ability to do the right thing. The rest of theclass would listen to the softly spoken exchange with raptattention, knowing that they would never get off that easy. Onhis third day, he punched a third grader in the stomach atrecess, and his absence for the remainder of the school day wasgreeted with sighs of relief.

   Sheri knew that she could not effect lasting changes in Allenwithout the understanding and cooperation of his classmates. Shealso knew that if they could accept him, honor his good points,and love him in spite of his difficult behavior, they wouldbenefit even more than Allen.

   Negotiating a fine line between giving Allen the attention heneeded and breeding jealousy in the other students, Sheri madetime for celebrating the uniqueness and individual successes ofeach child in the class, and the students responded with newlevels of appreciation for each other. She worked hard toorchestrate chances for Allen to be successful in the eyes of theother students. She used Bible stories to teach forgiveness andcompassion. She created an atmosphere in which Allen feltaccepted—even when he returned from one of his frequenttrips to the principal for infractions committed outside theclassroom. Students who grumbled at his inattention and slowresponses were quietly encouraged to be patient and helpful.Parents who asked about the new boy or volunteered in the roomwere drawn into the loving-socialization-of-Allen process. Sherimolded her class into a loving community every way she knew how.

   Allen had just as much trouble academically as he did socially.He struggled with simple addition problems, his spelling wasatrocious, and understanding the concepts of social studies wasalmost beyond his grasp. Including Allen in whole-group learningslowed the class down so much that sighs of impatience wereregularly heard from the other students. Whenever he was asked togive an answer, everyone had to wait for him to be shown the pagethe class was on. But nothing seemed to frustrate Allen more thanhis difficulty with reading. When his turn came in the readingcircle, he would stammer and stutter and his face would turn redas he struggled with all his might to make out the words. Of allthe things he failed at, it seemed that he wanted to succeed atreading most of all.

   And now, Marcy and I stood dumbfounded as we listened to Allenreading flawlessly from his second-grade reader. He wasenraptured by the story of a little boy who had a new pair ofmoccasins. Maybe he felt an affinity for the boy in the story.Maybe his intense desire to read brought all his skills intofocus. Maybe the love and acceptance of his teacher andclassmates had finally translated into enough self-esteem for himto believe that he could read just as well as his classmates.Whatever the reason, the moment was magic—to Allen, to Mrs.Shearin, to his classmates, and to me.

   Allen finished the story and turned to look at Mrs. Shearin, whohad tears streaming down her smiling cheeks. She threw her armsaround him in a hug of     celebration. That is when the applausebegan.

   I’d never seen anything like it before, and I’ve neverseen anything like it since. All Allen’s classmates wereapplauding, and one by one, the remaining seated students rose totheir feet to give him a unanimous standing ovation. When histeacher released him, Allen stood beside his chair and boweddeeply—something he had seen a soloist do at a musicalperformance just last week. That was when the cheering began.

   Allowing the noise to die away naturally, Sheri joined me at thefront of the room to watch, as each student congratulated Allen.One of the best readers in the class told him, “I want toread that story again. You made it sound better than when I readit myself.”

   That day was a watershed for Allen. With his confidence soaring,his reading skills developed rapidly. His self-control and socialskills improved steadily, in spite of occasional lapses. Hegained a whole year on his skills tests during the secondsemester alone.

   Mrs. Shearin’s students experienced firsthand thetransforming power of kindness and compassion, and one more childstepped out of confinement and into a whole new world ofpossibilities.

Seriously terrifying

This book scared the crap out of me. I'm talking the lying-awake-at-2am-thinking-I'm-hearing-something-rustling-under-my-bed-scared. I haven't been that freaked out by a book since Stephen King's "It".

I read it in two days, and that's what kept me awake, wondering how they were going to get out of this remote Alaskan village without getting violently ripped to shreds. It was well-done and extremely descriptive.

I hope they do well with the movie, but the book was vivid enough for me. Lebbon is a madman. Excellent book if you love horror.

Stands on its Own

Most movie novelizations are pretty b-novel material. They get second tier writers, and the writing is reminisicent of a romance novel. Not in this case. This book is suspenseful, well-written, and could easily stand on its own. I really can't wait to see the movie and read the graphic novels!

As a side note, FINALLY someone has written about vampires that are bloody scary! Enough of the brooding, angst ridden vampire that's just misunderstood. These are not vampires that women will be dreaming about each night! These are the "real" thing! Bravo! Right up there with Vltraviolet (the BBC one).

A well written novelization. Vampires were scary as all get out! Was a bit dissapointed in the end, but I guess it was the only way to end it! I recommend this book to vampire fans. I look forward to seeing the movie!
