Another season of Elm Creek Quilt Camp has come to a close, and Bonnie Markham faces a bleak and lonely winter ahead, with her quilt shop out of business and her divorce looming. A welcome escape comes when Claire, a beloved college friend, unexpectedly invites her to Maui to help launch an exciting new business: a quilter’s retreat set at a bed and breakfast amid the vibrant colors and balmy breezes of the Hawaiian Islands. Soon Bonnie finds herself looking out on sparkling waters and banyan trees, planning quilting courses, and learning the history and intricacies of Hawaiian quilting, all the while helping Claire run the inn.

As Bonnie’s adventure unfolds, it quickly becomes clear that Claire’s new business isn’t the only excitement in store for her. Her cheating, soon-to-be ex-husband decides he wants her stake in Elm Creek Quilts, which threatens not only her financial well-being but her dearest friendships as well. Luckily she has the artistic challenge of creating her own unique Hawaiian quilt pattern to distract her—and new friends like Hinano Paoa, owner of the Nä Mele Hawai‘i Music Shop, who introduces Bonnie to the fascinating traditions of Hawaiian culture and reminds her that love can be found when and where you least expect it.

From Publishers Weekly
In this latest entry to the bestselling Elm Creek Quilts series, quilting queen Bonnie Markham explores Hawaii and learns about the islands' quilting traditions while setting up a tropical quilt camp. Weary from a difficult divorce battle, Bonnie leaves beloved Elm Creek Manor and takes up her friend's invitation to start the camp; once in Hawaii, she gets to work on hiring staff and making her version of a Hawaiian quilt. When her mean-spirited ex-husband-to-be demands half her share in Elm Creek as part of the settlement, Bonnie takes drastic measures to protect the estate and her friends. Still, the big changes are hard to take, and Bonnie's not sure she can follow through. With homey details and a strong sense of the connections that bind women, friends, and families, Chiaverini (Circle of Quilters) lovingly crafts her tale about a woman stitching together a new life and a new project. Series fans will enjoy this latest entry, and those new to the quilting bee should have no problem finding their groove. (Apr.)

From Booklist
After a small holiday novella featuring the Elm Creek Quilters, Chiaverini brings us a much more substantive story featuring a new and exotic location and a new style of quilting. Trying to recover from a marriage that has gone from bad to worse, Bonnie decides to spend the quilting off-season in Hawaii as a consultant for the new Aloha Quilt Camp in Maui. Claire, her college roommate, has retired to Hawaii with her retired military husband, Eric, and has been running a quilt shop. Now she has also purchased a bed-and-breakfast and wants to add a quilt camp. The novel offers a wonderful introduction to Hawaii and the unique tradition of Hawaiian quilting. Bonnie meets the heartbreak of her nasty divorce head-on and learns more about life and forgiveness than she ever imagined possible. In the process, she renews an old friendship and makes some wonderful new ones. Chiaverini also introduces tantalizing hints of what will come next for the original Elm Creek Quilters. She continues to expand her cast of interesting and inspirational characters while imparting a wealth of knowledge about the craft of quilting. --Judy Coon

Another wonderful addition to the Elm Creek series
By Corinne H. Smith
Hawaii is about as far away from Pennsylvania as you can get. And in this book, that's exactly where Elm Creek quilter Bonnie Markham is headed. (Avid readers will recognize Bonnie as the one-time owner of the Grandma's Attic quilt shop, as well as being one of the founders of the Elm Creek quilt camps.) Bonnie and her husband Craig are in the middle of a contentious and stressful divorce. When Claire, Bonnie's old Penn State roommate, invites her to spend the winter on the island of Maui in order to help establish an Aloha Quilt Camp, Bonnie takes her up on the offer. Why not exchange a few months of Northeastern snow for a warm and sandy beach in Paradise?

Bonnie soon finds herself in the unique position of being perched in a vacation destination, where she is neither tourist nor resident. With her friends Claire and Eric, she explores some of the tropical landscape. But at the same time, she and Claire must hunker down and do all of the planning for creating a brand-new quilt camp, based in Claire's large, restored inn. Claire's savvy native assistant Midori introduces Bonnie to the intricacies of crafting Hawaiian-style quilts. Midori's nephew, Hinano, serves as a native guide and historical expert for Bonnie as well, even though the two of them often end up arguing about something. One question continues to linger throughout the storyline: Will Bonnie really return to Elm Creek Manor when her consultation duties are done? Or will she instead decide to relocate to Maui and teach full-time at the Aloha Quilt Camp?

The best fiction is enlightening as well as entertaining. Purists scoff whenever Ms. Chiaverini dares to move her plots away from the safe cocoon of Elm Creek Manor in central Pennsylvania, either geographically or historically. But that's exactly the way Life works. Rarely does a group of individuals remain static. Its members have obligations far and beyond their affiliations with one another. Following those threads away from the center gives these characters (and us) a chance to learn more about their personalities. It also helps us discover the various traditions of quilts in other places and at other times. Kudos to Ms. Chiaverini for once again providing another interesting insight into the universal heritage of intricate stitchery.

I wish I had liked it more...
By Avid Reader
I'm a long-time series fan, but I have to say, I think this is the book that's going to turn me from purchasing Chiaverini's books on the first day, to waiting to borrow from the library. If I could give 2.5 stars, I would.

I respect how Chiaverini challenges herself to explore new venues as an author, in both emotions and settings. I loved The Lost Quilter: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel (Elm Creek Quilts Novels) and A Quilter's Holiday: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel However, a lot of this book read like an awkward tour guide book. Descriptions of Hawaiian history and quilting lie flat in matter-of-fact paragraphs, or worse, forced into stilted dialogue. Chiaverini's historical fiction (especially The Runaway Quilt (Elm Creek Quilts Series #4) and The Quilter's Legacy (Elm Creek Quilts Series #5)) is quite good- I think her gift lies in creating relatable, human, historical characters, rather than having present-day folks lecture eachother about the past.

Bonnie Markham is not among the more dynamic Elm Creek Quilters. I found it hard to warm to her, though admittedly she's starting the novel in bad circumstances. Her friend Claire in Hawaii is enjoyable and their friendship seems authentic. I don't buy Bonnie's relationship with Hinano, her new love interest, though. They're both testy and argumentative with eachother. I get that Chiaverini is trying to show Bonnie's growth from Craig's doormat to an independent (even opinionated) woman, and is all the more deserving of love. But it's a bit predictable and not really exciting.

I'm sorry for anyone who is upset by this review- I know there are some die-hard fans out there who won't hear a word against the series. But this all is my honest opinion, and I wish someone had told me to read the book before spending money on it. I hope there is a next one, and that it is better! This author and series have so much to give.

Bless you, Jennifer Chiaverini, for another great book
By Holly
"The Aloha Quilt" is the sixteenth book in the Elm Creek Quilts series. In this installment, the focus is on Bonnie Markham, the owner of Grandma's Attic quilt shop (now defunct) and an original partner in Elm Creek Quilts. Bonnie finds herself in the middle of an ugly divorce from her husband and dealing with the emotions of losing her business. When her college roommate contacts her to spend the winter in Hawaii and offers her the opportunity to work as a consultant in opening a quilting camp there, she jumps at the chance. This is definitely Bonnie's story with the other Elm Creek Quilters taking a very minor role and typically only reference from time to time.

I really have to give Jennifer Chiaverini a tremendous amount of credit for maintaining such high quality books over an amazingly long span. Most series seem to lose their steam around book six or seven and need to be ended at that point (even though many authors don't and the reader often continues to suffer along because it's hard to stop even when they get bad). While loyal readers may be disappointed to have the story moved away from Elm Creek Manor, I think these forays into other locales and the focus on a single character are what has kept the series so strong and is a stroke of brilliance by the author. I remember the television series M*A*S*H and its long run - it was always hard to see a beloved character go and someone new come in, but without the new blood, the series would have ended much sooner. I think the same thing is true here - there is no end in sight and as long as she can keep writing, there will be stories to tell.

While I loved the book from start to finish, my one complaint was the telling of the history of Hawaii. I loved reading about it and was glad it was included, however, the way it was done at times felt more like a history lesson rather than seamlessly woven into the fabric of the novel. Some of it felt forced and I actually thought "here comes the history lesson" which took me out of the novel and disrupted the flow. It didn't last for long, but I wish it were done more smoothly.

Overall, and excellent novel and one that fans of the series will definitely enjoy !

super futuristic romantic thriller
By A Customer
Targonia Royal House Prince Devyn de bon ci Laci had spent what seemed several lifetimes being in trouble with his royal father for his womanizing of any female of any species in spite of his being betrothed to Princess Mika since birth. Now he is an agent of AIR (Alien Investigation and Removal).

Bride McKellis grew up on the streets rather fast during the Alien-Human war, but now almost eight decades later the vampiric survivalist lives in New Chicago. She smells a special odor that reminds her of her long time friend Aleha Love whom she has not seen in sixteen years. She chases after the aroma, which leads her to the egomaniacal Devyn, still a womanizer and tries to pick her up though he is Targon and she is human; and he takes her underground so she can meet more. He also knows her blood is critical to save some friends of his, but he to his shock is falling in love; she fell in love when they were still on the streets of New Chicago. As Bride begins to comprehend who she truly is, she fears she must choose between love and her destiny to save the world.

SEDUCE THE DARKNESS is a super futuristic romantic thriller that takes an interesting urban fantasy spin from the previous Alien Investigation and Removal science fiction entries (see the Alien Huntress and Teen Alien Huntress saga). The story line is fast-paced but it is the pairing of Devyn and Bride that makes the tale fun to read as ironically the womanizer has finally met his woman, but she is destiny's darling. Gena Showalter fans will enjoy her latest New Chicago tale that twists the series into a wider range of future possibilities.

Playboy meets Vampire
By Jessie Potts
Seduce the Darkness is the next book in Gena Showalter's Alien Huntress series. I have to say that she is a great writer because up until this book I didn't like Devyn. He was just too slick, too beautiful, too sure of himself, and the way he `collected' women? I wasn't sure who would be a good pair for him... Or if I even wanted to meet that woman; would she be a collector of men?

Turns out the perfect women for said playboy is Bride McKellis. Bride meets Devyn by chance, you see he smells like an old friend, and is immediately infuriated and repulsed/attracted to him when he tries to bed her. Until he finds out she's a vampire. (he already has had one you see) Deeper into the story we learn Devyn's not just a player, he physically can't find pleasure with the same woman twice. Is it ADD or something more serious?

When the two fated lovers meet yet again they discover fascinating things. Devyn isn't too bad (heehee) and Bride's blood holds the key to stopping an apocalyptic like virus. Having this entire book be about Devyn, instead of the glances we get in previous books, makes me not dislike him even, dare I say... find him attractive? Bride is indeed the perfect mate for him, rather than a collector of men, she is his counterbalance and doesn't let Devyn get away with crap.

I still wouldn't recommend reading it by itself, the story is so much richer if you have read the previous three. Trust me they are just as amazing and the lead heroes will have you blushing furiously.

From Booklist
Jakes takes the biblical definition of faith--the substance of things not yet realized--and adds that without some effort, faith becomes nothing more than a belief in magic. Although he admonishes the trend toward prosperity preaching that equates economic well-being with blessedness, Jakes reinforces the connection between faith, good works, and responsibility. And citing biblical verses and observations by successful people--Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and athlete Deion Sanders, among others--Jakes offers sound advice on how to put faith into action. He begins by insisting on a hard self-examination and takes aim at what he considers the major barrier to success: self-imposed limitations that result from a lack of spiritual faith. Jakes applies scripture across a wide range of personal challenges, including finding a mate and achieving financial success. For those who have already achieved a measure of success, Jakes cautions against complacency and arrogance. At whatever level of achievement, Jakes urges readers to learn to open themselves to giving and receiving blessings. Recalling his own rocky road to success from a childhood of poverty to the head of one of the nation's largest religious enterprises, Jakes makes clear how he was compelled to reposition himself to grow spiritually and materially. Jakes continues to deliver a message of hope and inspiration. Vanessa Bush

CHAPTER 1

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The disturbing clatter whined inside Jaxon Tremain's mind, playing without permission or welcome. He laughed bitterly. He didn't know how long he'd been locked up in the dank little cell. A week? An eternity?

Perhaps an endless dirt nap loomed in his future. Yeah, undoubtedly. He should be glad. It would be another endless ticktocking, except there would be no pained awareness, no crazed waiting for death to -- finally? blessedly? regrettably? -- come.

Survived worst, he thought, trying to comfort himself.

Once, he'd been shot and burned with a pyre-gun. An accident during training, but his shoulder still bore the fireseared scars. Another time, he'd been undercover, ratted out, then weighed down with steel beams and tossed into a muddy man-made river. Water and grime had filled his mouth, stinging like acid down his throat, into his lungs. When he'd miraculously fought his way free, he'd been surprised to find his skin still intact, muscle still glued to bones.

Once, he'd been stabbed in the kidney. A straight cut, all the way through, severing one of his favorite organs. Foolishly, he'd turned his back on a suspect one second too long and adios, old friend.

Sometimes that's all that was needed. One second.

The words echoed in his mind. One second was a single tick. Or tock. He laughed again, but the laughter soon turned to gagging and the gagging to coughing, the coughing to choking pain.

"I'm going insane," he muttered when he calmed. Not that the words were understandable. "Tickity, tockity, tickity, tockity." How many more were left for him?

Couldn't be many.

Being an Alien Investigation and Removal agent for New Chicago certainly has its perks, he thought dryly. 'Cause when an agent needed help breaking his nasty breathing habit, he got help.

Since Jaxon's abduction, a group of aliens had whaled on him so many times he'd lost count. They'd probably whale on him a thousand times more, fists flying at him in tune with that fucking clock. Tick, tock. Another laugh. Yep. Insane.

The otherworlders had beaten him because he'd refused to answer their questions. Even when screams had erupted inside his mind, loud and discordant, mortality in every pitch, he hadn't caved. Remembering the screams, he shuddered. Perhaps all the men and women he'd killed over the years had risen up, their souls fused with his as they finally made themselves known, determined to be heard at last.

Now, at least, the screams were buried somewhere deep, replaced by that damn clock. A small price to pay, he supposed.

Unfortunately, his body's suffering had only intensified.

He'd been punched in the mouth until his teeth shredded his gums. His tongue was the size of a baseball, so big he couldn't even move it to ensure he was still the proud owner of all those pearly whites. His nose was broken, yet somehow the scent of urine still taunted him, blending with the metallic aroma of dried blood and sweat. His, a thousand others.

His eyes were swollen, leaving only tiny slits. Not that there was much to see. Murky darkness failed to live up to its promise of sweet oblivion, revealing four barred walls, a plastic-lined floor to better clean any gore, and old-fashioned metal chains that continually sliced into his wrists and ankles like razors.

Those chains rattled as he shifted to a more comfortable position against the bars. Big. Mistake. He winced as intense pain ripped through him; his air supply ground to a tormented halt. Several ribs were broken and any type of movement just cracked them farther apart and made inflating his lungs an impossible chore, hundreds of needlesharp pricks cresting.

Concentrate on something else, something enjoyable. Well, there was a bone protruding through his left arm and his right ankle was snapped back so far it was a miracle his foot hadn't fallen off. That was better, right?

Survived worse, he reminded himself. Dated Cathy Savan-Holt.

A stick banged against his cage.

Jaxon stiffened with the realization that he was no longer alone. His vision was blurred as he scanned the small enclosure, quickly landing on the intruder. Hate filled him. Hate -- so helpless, a victim -- frustration and a twinge of fear.

The Delenseans had returned.

Not the party-loving race we always thought they were. Jaxon wondered if they'd come for interrogation or round eight of human piñata. Maybe both. He'd noticed the sixarmed bastards sometimes liked to multitask. Either way, Jaxon had probably reached the end of the line.

Bye-bye, breathing habit.

The other-worlders had to be tired of his lack of cooperation. They had to know his lips were sealed no matter what they did to him.

I led a good life. Kind of. As a trust-fund baby whose grandparents and parents had helped rebuild the city after the war and still had their fingers in several security businesses, he had more money than God, had traveled the world, and had friends who would die for him. Some already had. But he'd remained unattached to any semblance of home and hearth, distanced from nearly everything around him.

That distance seemed foolish now.

More banging. "Scared?" a heavily accented voice taunted. Metal creaked against metal as the door opened.

Darkened as the cell was and swollen as his lids were, Jaxon could only make out a shadowy outline. "You're kidding, right?" He barely managed to work the words past his enlarged tongue, wasn't even sure the bastard could understand him. "I've missed you, been counting the minutes till you returned and all that shit."

"You sound terrible. Like a drunk."

"Fuck you."

"Now that I understood." A pause, a laugh. "You know, you weren't this brash when I followed you all those weeks. Undetected," the alien added smugly. "You were always so reserved, so stoic. Not a single curse ever passed your lips."

Yes, Jaxon was known for his patience and manners. He'd taught himself to exude both. Forced himself to exude both, actually. Sometimes he could even pretend the serenity came naturally, that he didn't have to fight for it every second of every day.

"No explanation?"

About what? What had they been discussing? Oh, yeah. His lack of etiquette. "Amazing what having your toenails ripped off will do to a guy's personality." Actually, this was the real him. The sarcasm he usually repressed, and the potty mouth he usually flushed before a single bad word could escape. Safer that way. For everyone. Right now, however, he didn't give a shit what he acted like or what the consequences were. "Want me to show you? Prove it?"

"Tsk, tsk, tsk." Not a hint of anger laced the alien's tone. He was too cocky for that, too assured of his power. "So brazen you are. So foolish."

"Shoulda abducted Dallas, then. He's the smart one." Under normal circumstances, Jaxon would never have uttered another agent's name. But this group of Delenseans had been studying A.I.R. for weeks. Undetected, he inwardly mocked. They practically knew more than Jaxon. Everything from day-to-day operations at headquarters to where the agents lived and what their hobbies were.

They'd taunted him with the information. Chuckled like every word had been a gut-busting joke. Even now, there was a sound track of their jeers in his ears: Five o'clock sharp, Dallas arrives. He drinks a cup of coffee, talks to Kitty. Ghost shows up, usually eight minutes late. He has a new girlfriend and has trouble leaving her.

They'd been able to take Jaxon from his own home quickly, expertly. Easily. As he remembered, embarrassment heated his cheeks. What kind of agent allowed himself to be taken from home? Answer: a bad one. Now there was a joke.

No way could he have been prepared, though. Shockingly, the blue-skinned aliens had mastered molecular transport. Something humans hadn't yet done, though they'd been working on it for a long time. Must be an innate ability of the race rather than technology. Still.

Mortifying how quickly he'd been taken by the unadvanced race. One minute Jaxon had been lounging on his couch, drinking beer and watching virtual play-offs, and the next three Delenseans surrounded him, grinning like they'd just received swallow-it-all blow jobs. The next, he'd been here.

"Sleeping?" the alien asked, breaking the silence.

"Yeah. Maybe you should go. Let me rest."

"And maybe Dallas is already on my To Be Captured list." Again, the bastard sounded smug.

"I'm sure he'll love the accommodations. You're such a good host, Deli. Maybe I'll invite you to my home sometime. Show you my toys."

Rather than rile him, Jaxon seemed to amuse him all the more. "Call me Thomas. We're going to be on much more...intimate terms, you and I."

Jaxon didn't have to rack his brain to interpret that little gem. Rape, the one thing they hadn't done yet. Don't give him a reaction. You slept with Cathy, remember. Nothing worse. "Deli, man." He was careful to enunciate every syllable, wanted the words understood. "Hate to hurt your feelings, but you're not my type."

The alien shrugged. "I will be soon enough, I'm sure."

He drew in a slow breath, held...held -- god, the pain -- then released it just as slowly. In, out. In -- he stilled, frowned. Thoughts of rape receded, drowned by an intoxicating awareness. What was that delicious fragrance? He inhaled again; his nostrils twitched. And then he knew.

The Delensean wasn't alone.

The otherworlder emitted a whiskeylike scent, yet Jaxon smelled something sweet and heady. Something floral. His blood heated and his skin pulled tight. His stomach clenched. His shaft even twitched in its first show of interest since his imprisonment -- and long before.

Jaxon blinked in surprise. Weak as he was, the reaction should have been impossible, yet his body was acting like the fragrance was laced with undiluted pheromones. That must mean --

Excellent police procedural science fiction romance
By A Customer
Mishka "Maria" Le'Ace is a half-breed undercover operative; Maria is part human, part killing machine and a life prisoner as her handler holds the one-button gizmo controlling a death chip inside her brain. Maria is sent to rescue Alien Investigation and Removal Agent Jaxon Tremain tortured by the Delenseans who demand he tell them what he knows about their enemies the Schon. She saves his life killing his capturers without much of a blink.

She is stunned by her human attraction to Jaxon as this has never happened to her before. However though he feels the same way towards Maria, he fears she cannot be trusted as she wants the same information that he refused to provide to the Delenseans although he admits her seductive torture will be harder to elude. As Maria helps Jaxon recover from his ordeal, her handler orders her to take care of business ASAP or else.

The latest Alien Hunter police procedural science fiction romance (see AWAKEN ME DARKLY and ENSLAVE ME SWEETLY) is a great thriller starring two strong individuals; whose strengths differ. She is physically dynamo while his is dedication and loyalty. Their forbidden relationship in which neither quite trusts the other enhances a sharp action-packed story line.

Top Notch Sci-fi Romance (A Grade)
By Katie Babs
Gena Showalter has written a top notch novel with alien hunters, incredible action and really hot sex scenes that are smoldering. I was blown away by this third book in her Alien Huntress series and I recommend Savor Me Slowly to any fan of Showalter.
Jaxon Tremaine has himself in quite a bind. He has been taken and tortured by some alien enemies. They want answers only he can provide. He doesn't give in but when a new alien torturer comes, he is speechless. Mishka is unlike any alien or woman he has ever met.
Mishka is also on a mission, and that is to save Jaxon. But she doesn't do her part willingly. She is basically a slave and belongs to an evil man who can kill her without a second thought. She was made in a labatory and has more strength and power than any human, male or female has. Mishka is able to save Jaxon and hides him, but when Jaxon finally heals, he wants answers. Mishka is confused because she has never dealt with a man such as Jaxon. He makes her feel things she has never felt for in a man.
All too soon both Jaxon and Mishka act on their attraction, but what Jaxon doesn't know is that Mishka could end up being killed by the touch of a button.
Only one word comes to mind when reading a book by Gena Showalter and that is "WOW". I was lost in this world and most importantly the scorching hot love affair between Jason and his incredible love for Mishka. Showalter has written an incredible character in that of Mishka. She is so scarred and emotional cold because of her horrible past and is afraid of being touched and needing love because of the consequences. Jason is a true alpha hero who has a tender side but is very much protective of this intriguing woman.
Savor Me Slowly is a near to perfect book as your can get. Simply, buckle yourself in and brace yourself for a wild and sexy ride.

Perfectly Executed (48 Hours Mystery), by Peter Van Sant, Jenna Jackson

THEY WERE YOUNG. THEY WERE SMART -- OFTEN TO THE POINT OF ARROGANCE. BUT WERE THEY KILLERS?

Investigative correspondent Peter Van Sant draws on penetrating interviews and extensive research to unravel a controversial case from TV's 48 Hours Mystery -- the two gifted college students charged with murdering one of their families in cold blood.

Bellevue, Washington: Early on a serene summer evening, neighbors heard a muffled commotion from inside the home of a quiet Muslim family, newcomers to the wealthy Seattle suburb. It wasn't until well after midnight that Atif Rafay and his best friend, Sebastian Burns, entered the Rafay house to find Atif's parents fatally bludgeoned, and his sister clinging to life. Despite airtight alibis and a dearth of evidence, the boys quickly emerged as suspects -- and sealed their fate when they headed to Canada. After a six-year extradition battle that went all the way to Canada's Supreme Court, they were returned to the U.S. -- in a twisting case involving an elaborate sting operation; a damaging screenplay; a shattering surprise witness; and the shocking discovery of one of the boys having sex with his female attorney in prison. Were Atif Rafay and Sebastian Burns falsely accused? Or was this unspeakable crime PERFECTLY EXECUTED?

Imperfectly written
By N. Hopkins
This book needed a good editor. It is rambling and too long by half. The Peter van Sant interpolations slow the story and add little or nothing to it.

The book is also riddled with errors. Here are just two of the more obvious:

Page 108: "Leopold and Loeb were found guilty and executed."
>>>>Neither was executed. In a defense famous in the history of American criminal justice, the great lawyer Clarence Darrow succeeded in getting both men's lives spared: they were sentenced to life in prison. Nathan Loeb was murdered by a fellow convict in prison; Richard Leopold was paroled after 33 years, moved to Puerto Rico, married, and died of a heart attack at age 66.

Page 110: [B]ack in 1994 . . . David Koresh was running the [Branch Dravidian] cult in Waco, Texas."
>>>>David Koresh died in 1993.

One wishes a competent author, like Ann Rule, had told this story.

Imperfect but fascinating
By G. Ware Cornell Jr.
The problem with TV shows like 48 Hour Mystery is that normally the story has be be told in about 40 minutes or so. A broadcast episode expanded to two hours relates to the killing of a Muslim couple and autistic daughter in Washington state and the controversial conviction of the son and his best friend. That is still not enough time to fully explore a crime like the one depicted here.

It might have made sense to turn the TV special into a non-fiction thriller This is, after all, a complex crime involving questionable police and prosecutorial theories. Detail can be put in a book that can get lost in a TV show. But by the same token, books lack the immediacy of television. Perfectly Executed is no exception to that rule. But mostly what we lack here is a different perspective to Peter Van Sant's reporting, as good as it may be. The TV show is the book and the book is the TV show.

That said, it is still a terrific read, but one that would be better told by someone independent of the network-someone like Joe McGinniss ( Fatal Vision ). And kudos to Peter Van Sant for doing the heavy lifting along with his co-author.

A great book for fans of the tv show
By Steven Emrick
If you enjoy the 48 Hours Mystery television show, you will not be disappointed by Perfectly Executed. I had never seen the episode that dealt with this case, so for me it had an extra level of interest. It is a very "fast read", and the way that it was written certainly encourages that. In particular, the short chapters allow you to read in short spurts that keep you wanting to know more of the story. It's a fascinating case with many plot twists and interesting characters. It does drag just a bit in the middle of the book dealing with the undercover operations. Sometimes, I find that non-fiction books try to pack in too much information, and inevitably not everything is as compelling as fiction can be. That being the only flaw in this book, I highly recommend this story to fans of true crime.

One of the best self-help books I've read
By Kristen Laine
When a friend put this book in my hands a few months ago, I wondered if he was trying to tell me something, and if I should be offended. Find Your Focus Zone: Hadn't I read enough time-management books or self-improvement books already? Now I've read the book -- and passed on a few copies myself -- and I'm signing on here to say that THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL SELF-HELP BOOK.

For one thing, it's really helpful. Really, really helpful. Palladino has a novelist's gift for succinct and memorable character descriptions, which means that her description of the too hyperfast, hyperfocused guy reminded me of someone (several someones) I knew, as did her sketch of the woman who is scattered and spacey, the folks who are overstimulated, understimulated, afraid of failure. I started turning down pages to share with people but stopped partway through. I could tell that nearly everyone I know could benefit from Palladino's clear analysis of what makes us less effective in every part of our lives.

That leads me to another part of Find Your Focus Zone that surprised me: how much I found that Palladino's advice could help me in my family life. Her portraits of parent-child interactions hit home with even more force than did her sketches of workers. Because of her book, I've changed the way I think about my daughter's foot-dragging over homework and music practice. Also how my husband and I work with her and our son on chores, how we think about our family meals, our vacations, our dreams for them. Little stuff and big stuff.

If you wonder about the effect of the new connectivity toys and tools on children, read this book. If you wish work didn't intrude on your family life but find it hard to leave it at the office, read this book. If you wish you could just Get More Done, read this book. If you feel like there's more in you than your work is getting out, read this book. If you're a manager or business owner, read this book. If you're just starting out in a job, read this book.

Best of all, it's not just easy to read and well-written. It's clear that Palladino knows her science. She trusts the intelligence of her readers when she describes current research in attention and attention disorders. It's a pleasure to read a book with clear footnotes that also has practical end-of-chapter suggestions.

So if someone gives you this book, thank them. And then buy another to pass on.

HELP FOR MY SCATTERED BRAIN!
By M. Gill
HELP FOR MY SCATTERED BRAIN!
I like this book. Tips and strategies for staying engaged with boring tasks, as well as practical methods for dealing with anxiety, pressure to perform, and fear of failure. It teaches the art of finding and maintaining a state of productive focus. It provides tools to call yourself to attention so you can visit that wonderful place where "all systems are go" and you are humming along. You don't have to be a scientist to appreciate the clear explanation of the upside down U that graphs the relationship between attention and stimulation. Even the Brain Chemical Attention Chart, showing the relationship of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine to attention, is clear and understandable. The book is easy to read, user friendly, and contains lots of practical advice. I had no problem staying in my "focus zone" as I read.

Living a life you love, more effectively
By e-Patient Dave
I've spent about 15 years reading books and articles about this subject, and this is the first time I've actually experienced an immediate and tangible shift in focus. That's pretty close to miraculous, especially since I've even been an editor or contributor to some books on the subject.

See, I have a very very busy mind. I'm a marketing director for a Boston high-tech company (fast-moving group in a rapidly changing environment with constantly large amounts to learn), I sing in a championship men's chorus which requires a substantial commitment, I'm in an a capella quartet (ditto), I'm Class Notes secretary for my college class, and just for fun last year I discovered a very advanced life-threatening cancer, learned an enormous amount fast (as if my life depended on it) and completely beat it, while being stuck with two houses because we'd moved at the start of the housing slump. Now that the house and cancer are resolved, I'm a team leader in a year-long self-development course, I've become an active blogger, and I've published my year-long cancer journal and I'm becoming active in the "e-patient" movement to promote a new kind of doctor-patient relationship for the internet-enabled, whose principles played a big role in my cancer success last year.

I mean, I love my life, but with a life like that, who has time to stop and "go to school" about focusing?

I'll never forget the first time management course I took, decades ago. It said you just make a list and mark everything A,B,C for priority and then do the most important stuff. I wanted to reach out and SLAP the author, saying "You idiot, if I could do THAT, I wouldn't need this course!"

Where most books spend chapters being philosophical about why their solution WILL be useful later in the book, Find Your Focus Zone immediately gets to the point, delivering solutions in the very first chapter. Sure, it deepens your understanding later on, but the punchline, the payoff, is delivered right away.

I experienced it like a caffeine jolt of understanding and awareness. It's about finding the level of stimulation that works for you (which isn't as easy as it might sound). The funny thing is that I read it months ago and didn't think much about it since then, but then the other night in the middle of a marathon of productivity, I realized I was *doing* it, and it was working. I was moving from task to task with grace and ease, just gettin' stuff done.

Frankly, I've always had a hard time with the idea that with all the ways I experience and contribute and enjoy life, somehow I shouldn't be the way I am. I mean, I have more fun and I experience more stimulation than two or three ordinary people. This book doesn't say for a minute that you've got to learn to be different - it says "Here's this one massively useful knob you can control about your environment, to get more stuff done while being exactly the way you are." How cool is that?

ONE

The majestic white peak of Mount Rainier was one of the first things Maia Skouris had seen when she'd Returned. The snowcapped mountain had loomed above her on that misty morning almost three years ago, when the eight-year-old girl had suddenly found herself standing on Highland Beach, alongside exactly 4,399 equally baffled souls. Maia remembered being scared and disoriented, not knowing where she was or what had become of her parents. Those feelings came back to her as the huge white glaciers grew steadily larger in the windshield of the chartered bus carrying her up the side of the mountain. She shuddered involuntarily in her seat. Maia was used to seeing the future, but sometimes the past sneaked up on her as well.

One minute I was picking flowers in California, she recalled. The next minute there was a great big mountain on the horizon...

"All right, everyone," Alana Mareva addressed Maia and the other children from the front of the bus. A hint of a foreign accent colored the teacher's voice. Maia knew the elegant, dark-haired woman from outside school as well; Alana was Maia's mother's partner's girlfriend. "We're almost there."

The bus had left The 4400 Center over three hours ago, on a daylong field trip to Mount Rainier National Park. Towering green fir trees seemed to rush past outside as the bus full of kids climbed a steep mountain road toward the upper slopes of Rainier. A bright blue sky, dotted with fluffy white clouds, could be glimpsed above the treetops. The class had lucked out, weather-wise. It was a perfect day for an outdoor excursion.

Cheers greeted Alana's announcement. The hubbub of dozens of excited voices filled the interior of the air-conditioned bus. Ms. Tobey, the other teacher leading the field trip, clicked off the mounted TV set that had been entertaining the young passengers with a series of educational videos. Many of Maia's classmates had chosen to occupy themselves with their own books or computer games instead. Looking at the seemingly ordinary students and teachers, you would never guess that each and every one of them was, like Maia, one of the 4400 -- unless, of course, you noticed that Billy Hulquist was juggling marbles without actually touching them, or that Rory Plummer was drawing brightly colored designs in her notebook using only her fingertip. Duane Foxworth blinked repeatedly as he peered at the wilderness outside; Maia knew he was capturing snapshots of the scenery in his photographic memory. Sumi Price swayed in her seat, snapping her fingers to a rhythm only she could hear. Sumi's ears could pick up radio signals from as far away as Bucharest.

Pretty neat abilities, Maia thought enviously. Too bad I can't trade mine for one of theirs.

Precognition was seldom any fun.

Maia tucked her journal into the backpack resting at her feet. Despite her unpleasant associations with the mountain, she was looking forward to arriving at their destination. Her mother had insisted that Rainier was beautiful this time of year, and Maia had to admit that it would be kind of cool to see actual snow in the middle of May. Pushing her painful memories aside, she firmly resolved to have a good time. After all, she reminded herself, this sure beat being stuck inside a classroom all day.

"As we've discussed," Alana lectured, "Mount Rainier is the highest peak in the Cascades, rising to over fourteen thousand feet. That's almost three miles high. On a clear day, it can be seen from over one hundred and fifty miles away, all the way from Portland to Seattle. It is a dormant volcano, less than a million years old, and is part of the socalled Ring of Fire, a chain of seismic activity that stretches around the Pacific Ocean all the way to New Zealand."

Tyrell Hughes raised his hand to get the teacher's attention. "The volcano's not going to erupt while we're up there, is it?"

"I wouldn't worry about that." Alana gave the boy a reassuring smile. "Rainier hasn't had a major eruption for over five hundred years. It's bound to erupt someday, but there will probably be plenty of warning signs first. When Mount St. Helens erupted back in 1980, it was after months of preliminary tremors, bulges, and discharges of steam."

Even still, dozens of people got killed, Maia thought. She had read about the 1980 eruption, which had taken place while she was still missing. Alana didn't seem to be in a hurry to mention that part.

"These days Mount Rainier is carefully monitored for any signs of increased volcanic activity," the teacher continued. "They wouldn't let us into the park if it wasn't safe."

"But it could go off today," Tyrell persisted. He seemed morbidly fascinated by the possibility. "Couldn't it?"

Alana sighed softly. "The odds are very much against it, Tyrell." The bus pulled into the parking lot outside the visitor center, and Alana looked grateful for the distraction. "Here we are, kids. Everyone ready to get off the bus?"

Another chorus of cheers testified to the children's eagerness to set foot on the mountain. Maia peered out the window at the breathtaking vista before her. A sign welcomed them to the Paradise area, elevation 5,400 feet. Acres of wildflowers carpeted the sloping green meadows ascending toward snowier slopes farther above. Granite boulders jutted from the verdant fields. Hiking trails led up and away from the visitor center, a futuristic structure that resembled a flying saucer. Maia remembered Marco telling her that the very first modern UFO sighting had taken place near Mount Rainier in 1947, only a year after Maia had disappeared from California. Marco had speculated that many such UFO reports had been inspired by the glowing balls of light that had abducted the 4400 over the years. Makes sense to me, Maia thought, although we'll probably never know for sure.

Alana and Ms. Tobey herded the kids off the bus. "All right now, everybody stay together." Maia waited patiently for her turn to disembark. As she stepped down onto the pavement, the crisp mountain air carried the fragrance of heather and huckleberries. She took a deep breath, savoring the refreshing aroma. The sunlight, reflected off the icy glaciers above, was so bright that it made her eyes water. Lifting a hand to shield her eyes from the glare, she observed the winding paths leading up to the snow line. She wondered how high she would have to hike to reach all that frozen whiteness. It didn't seem that far away. Maybe there would be time to explore the trails after they checked out the exhibits at the visitor center?

Without warning, the future intruded on the present:

The snowy mountainside shakes. Hot steam vents from cracks in the earth. Maia's mother, Diana Skouris, confronts a nearby figure whose face Maia cannot see. Diana is wearing an NTAC vest over her snow gear. Tremors rock the ground beneath her feet, so that she can barely keep from falling. A deafening roar rises from below. The jets of steam smell like rotten eggs. "You have to stop this!" Diana shouts urgently. Maia glimpses a masculine figure in a flannel shirt, his face turned away from hers. The man seems to be trembling in sync with the shuddering mountain. "You don't want to be remembered this way. D. B. Cooper never hurt anybody!"

Melting snow starts to bubble and boil...

"Maia? Are you all right?"

The future faded from view, just like it always did, and Maia found herself looking into Alana's worried brown eyes. The teacher was crouched in front of Maia, examining her student with obvious concern. Maia saw her own face reflected in Alana's eyes. She looked pale and frightened. "What is it, Maia? Did you see something?"

Alana was very familiar with Maia's ability.

Maia nodded. She stared up at the crest of the mountain, half expecting to see an explosion of heated gases and lava blowing the peak apart. Despite the warm sunlight, a familiar chill came over her as she spoke with utter certainty. "The mountain is going to wake up."

Alana gulped. Her dark eyes widened in alarm. She glanced around anxiously to see if any of the other children had overheard Maia, only to discover a circle of frightened kids surrounding them, obviously hanging on Maia's every word. Ms. Tobey tried to steer the onlookers away, but it was too late; some of the younger kids were already crying and begging to go home. Tyrell looked like he was about to throw up.

I'm sorry, Maia thought guiltily. The terrified expressions of her classmates tore her up inside. It wasn't fair; even in the company of her own kind, she still ended up feeling like a freak. I didn't mean to spoil everything. I can't help what I see.

"Are you sure?" Alana asked, loudly enough for the other kids to hear. She seemed to be trying to calm them as much as Maia. "It's impossible to predict exactly when Rainier might erupt."

"It's not impossible," Maia said. She had learned from experience that lying about her visions only made things worse. Like the time she hid her predictions from her mommy and all the 4400 got sick. "I just did it." The memory of what she had just seen was burned into her brain. "And I know who is responsible."

"Responsible?" Alana's brow furrowed in confusion. "Maia, people don't cause volcanoes to erupt."

"This one will." She remembered her mother shouting at a faceless figure in a flannel shirt. "His name is D. B. Cooper." ® and © 2008 CBS Studios Productions LLC. All Rights Reserved.

Great (but too short) book :-)
By P. Seaton
The plot, as suggested by the book title, is about a volcano (although not the one in Italy); About the looming chaos and mayhem that Maia sees (in a precognition) as she sets foot on Mt. Rainier - Seattle's very own "Vesuvius" - while on a school day trip. The plot focuses mainly on Tom and Diana and their [work] trying to piece together and make sense of Maias precognition. Desperately needing to find a way to alter the ominous future predicted by a kid who's never wrong. Finding a solution to the problem turns out to be a challenge, as there are characters with interests of their own...

Charachter-wise there are a number of exciting new 4400 acquaintances, some of which possess more or less incredible superhuman powers. Of course, there are many familiar faces - Shawn and Isabell being one of the more prominent. We get to spend time with the characters and their feelings/thoughts on each other, the future, lost time and what their fates may be. Are they a blessing or a curse?

The writing is pretty straight forward and descriptive (which sometimes spawn pretty long sentences) but nonetheless easily read. I picked up some new words along the way though. The (new) characters are carefully introduced/described and their history evolves in a pleasant matter as you make your way through the book. You're not told too much or too little. Established characters (like Tom, Diana, Marco, Nina, Richard, Shawn, Isabell, etc) are nicely summarized when introduced to the reader.

The book has a good composure to it, you don't get too mixed up in past, present and future. The storytelling is chronological and both pleasant/exciting. The pacing is good. No dull bits. As a viewer of the TV-series I kept reading the dialogue "out loud" (as Tom, Diana, etc) in my head. There aren't much dialogue, but the one that's in the book make sense; as in "that sure sounds like something XXX would say".

If this book would be transformed into the TV-version, it would probably end up as a douple episode (giving us viewers the ever annoying "to be continued..." at the end of pt.1).

Overall I really enjoyed reading this book and if I hadn't been on a trip with my girlfriend (to visit friends who were getting wed) I would probably have finished it a lot quicker than I did.

I want more, like a subscription or something.

the 4400, novel # 1....
By James C. Ward
since the series has now ended, I'm hoping there will be more novels about the series like this one. This was an enjoyable read, if you're a fan of the series, you should enjoy this.

The story seems to take place between seasons 3 & 4 of the series, as the author makes statements, references, that are meant to review past events that took place in seasons 1 & 2 and assumes the reader already knows about this.

I see amazon now has book # 2 available: "Wet Work".

Familiar But Not Very Exciting
By A. Bell
Even though this was written in 2008, it seems to take place perhaps in Season 4 or so of The 4400 television series. It's basically a very formulaic episode in which Maia has a vision of her mom on the top of an erupting Mt. Rainier. It's well-written, but the story itself is only of mediocre interest. I did, however, enjoy revisiting places in Seattle that I've been to like Pike Place Market and the Science Fiction Museum. It's nice to read a book every now and then where you know the faces and voices of the characters and have actually visited the setting.
