THEY WERE YOUNG. THEY WERE SMART -- OFTEN TO THE POINT OF ARROGANCE. BUT WERE THEY KILLERS?
Investigative correspondent Peter Van Sant draws on penetrating interviews and extensive research to unravel a controversial case from TV's 48 Hours Mystery -- the two gifted college students charged with murdering one of their families in cold blood.
Bellevue, Washington: Early on a serene summer evening, neighbors heard a muffled commotion from inside the home of a quiet Muslim family, newcomers to the wealthy Seattle suburb. It wasn't until well after midnight that Atif Rafay and his best friend, Sebastian Burns, entered the Rafay house to find Atif's parents fatally bludgeoned, and his sister clinging to life. Despite airtight alibis and a dearth of evidence, the boys quickly emerged as suspects -- and sealed their fate when they headed to Canada. After a six-year extradition battle that went all the way to Canada's Supreme Court, they were returned to the U.S. -- in a twisting case involving an elaborate sting operation; a damaging screenplay; a shattering surprise witness; and the shocking discovery of one of the boys having sex with his female attorney in prison. Were Atif Rafay and Sebastian Burns falsely accused? Or was this unspeakable crime PERFECTLY EXECUTED?

Imperfectly written
By N. Hopkins
This book needed a good editor. It is rambling and too long by half. The Peter van Sant interpolations slow the story and add little or nothing to it.
The book is also riddled with errors. Here are just two of the more obvious:
Page 108: "Leopold and Loeb were found guilty and executed."
>>>>Neither was executed. In a defense famous in the history of American criminal justice, the great lawyer Clarence Darrow succeeded in getting both men's lives spared: they were sentenced to life in prison. Nathan Loeb was murdered by a fellow convict in prison; Richard Leopold was paroled after 33 years, moved to Puerto Rico, married, and died of a heart attack at age 66.
Page 110: [B]ack in 1994 . . . David Koresh was running the [Branch Dravidian] cult in Waco, Texas."
>>>>David Koresh died in 1993.
One wishes a competent author, like Ann Rule, had told this story.

Imperfect but fascinating
By G. Ware Cornell Jr.
The problem with TV shows like 48 Hour Mystery is that normally the story has be be told in about 40 minutes or so. A broadcast episode expanded to two hours relates to the killing of a Muslim couple and autistic daughter in Washington state and the controversial conviction of the son and his best friend. That is still not enough time to fully explore a crime like the one depicted here.
It might have made sense to turn the TV special into a non-fiction thriller This is, after all, a complex crime involving questionable police and prosecutorial theories. Detail can be put in a book that can get lost in a TV show. But by the same token, books lack the immediacy of television. Perfectly Executed is no exception to that rule. But mostly what we lack here is a different perspective to Peter Van Sant's reporting, as good as it may be. The TV show is the book and the book is the TV show.
That said, it is still a terrific read, but one that would be better told by someone independent of the network-someone like Joe McGinniss ( Fatal Vision ). And kudos to Peter Van Sant for doing the heavy lifting along with his co-author.

A great book for fans of the tv show
By Steven Emrick
If you enjoy the 48 Hours Mystery television show, you will not be disappointed by Perfectly Executed. I had never seen the episode that dealt with this case, so for me it had an extra level of interest. It is a very "fast read", and the way that it was written certainly encourages that. In particular, the short chapters allow you to read in short spurts that keep you wanting to know more of the story. It's a fascinating case with many plot twists and interesting characters. It does drag just a bit in the middle of the book dealing with the undercover operations. Sometimes, I find that non-fiction books try to pack in too much information, and inevitably not everything is as compelling as fiction can be. That being the only flaw in this book, I highly recommend this story to fans of true crime.
