Prologue

With my hands clasped and resting on my lap, I sat at the foot of my bed in my room, waiting for Grandmother Emma March's chauffeur, Felix, to come up for my two suitcases and me. This morning it was so quiet that I imagined I wore invisible earmuffs. I could hear only my memories: the muffled sounds of my mother and father having another argument behind their closed bedroom door across the hallway, the clip-clop footsteps of Nancy, the maid, coming down the hallway to clean either my brother Ian's or my room, Ian imitating the sound of some insect he was studying, Grandmother Emma's voice echoing from the other side of the mansion as she barked out an order to one of the other servants.

As I sat there, it suddenly occurred to me why I wasn't terribly unhappy about leaving my grandmother's magnificent mansion. It had never felt like a home to me. It was more like borrowed space. Mother used to say we were even borrowing the air we breathed here. My brother, Ian, and I had to be so careful about everything we touched, even in our own rooms. So-called unnecessary noise was prohibited. Often, we found ourselves whispering, even when Grandmother Emma wasn't at home. We behaved as if we believed that whenever she went somewhere, she always left her shadow behind to spy on us and make reports. There were tattletales listening in every corner, under every chair, behind closed closet doors.

The rules swirled about us like angry bees ready to swarm down and sting us at the slightest sign of any violation. Just before I fell asleep every night, I could hear the house itself chanting and reminding me, "Beware of smudging furniture or windows. Don't leave anything out of place. Never track in anything from outdoors. Walk on air. Shut off lights. Respect me. Think of me as you would a very famous holy cathedral and treat me with similar reverence."

From the first day after we sold our own home and moved in with Grandmother Emma because of Daddy's economic troubles, my mother dreamed of moving out. The moment she stepped through the tall mahogany double doors, with the gold-painted, hand-carved March crest at the centers, and followed our things in funeral fashion up the stairway to our side of the large mansion, she was draped in dark shadows and weighed down like someone forced to wear layers and layers of heavy overcoats. Each day the brightness seeped more and more out of her eyes, and later I often caught her gazing out the window like someone behind prison bars envisioning an escape. Even in this opulent, rich world, she looked poor, misplaced, homeless and forgotten, or as Ian said, "A prisoner of circumstances beyond her control."

In the end we all were prisoners of these circumstances, even Grandmother Emma.

No one would have suspected that days of happiness and joy were rare for us. After all, we were the rich March family. Those happy days, however, were our private holidays, occurring just often enough to keep us, especially my mother, from drowning in a sea of depression. She would come up from the dark depth of despair, take a breath in the sunshine and then sink again to wait for the next occasion for smiles and laughter.

Too bad we didn't have more good and happy times to deposit in some sort of bank, I thought, and draw from them when we were in need of cheering ourselves. We'd always have something for a rainy day. Whoever could do that, whoever had a vault full of wonderful memories, was rich, even richer than Grandmother Emma, whose husband had been a top executive at Bethlehem Steel during the so-called golden age.

My grandparents had been like royalty then, and in the high society of today's Bethlehem they were still treated like old monarchs. She composed and moved herself as would any queen who merely had to nod or lift her hand to open doors, raise curtains, command the obedience of not only servants but seemingly everything and everyone around her, including birds and clouds. Only Mother was beyond her reach.

Mother and Grandmother Emma never got along. They could pass each other in the hallway without either acknowledging the other's presence. My mother always believed my grandmother thought she was not worthy enough to marry a March. Mother said Grandmother Emma insisted on us moving into her home not because she felt sorry for us and wanted to help us as much as she wanted to control us and be sure we didn't stain the Marches' precious image or put a crack in their solid reputation. There really wasn't much about our lives she didn't know and didn't want to influence or change, and my father put up little resistance.

"You don't just have feet of clay, Christopher," I overheard my mother tell my father once. "Your whole body and soul are made of clay and your mother is molding and sculpting or at least still trying. Anyone would expect her to give up by now, but not Emma March. She never surrenders. Ironically, I'm not the one who will always displease her."

Most of the time, my father ignored my mother's complaints and criticisms or just shrugged and went on doing whatever he was doing. Complaints and criticisms, whether from my mother or from my grandmother, were to him what flies were to an elephant. And even if he paid any attention and really heard them, he would wave them off with a gesture or a laugh. My grandmother said he was a clone of his father in that way. I never knew my grandfather, so I couldn't say. Ian knew him for a while before he died, but he told me he was not old enough to form any opinion except to say he didn't think he would have liked him if he had lived longer anyway. I had no reason to doubt it, because my mother seemed to agree with Grandmother Emma about her description of my father and grandfather.

"March men are selfish. Their eyes are turned inward. They don't see anyone else," she muttered when she voiced a complaint and he ignored her.

I never saw that more clearly than I did when my mother told him his little girl had crossed that mysterious boundary into womanhood. At the age of seven, my body, like some impatient Olympic runner, had charged out of the gate before the sound of the starting pistol. I had lurched forward and at times had felt as if I'd been rushed into my adolescence by a traitorous inner self that, on its own, seemingly overnight, had decided to begin forming my breasts, curving my buttocks, narrowing my waist and then initiating menarche.

The most terrifying thing I had overheard my doctor tell my mother was, "Yes, Carol, it is biologically possible for her to become pregnant," and there I was at the time, finishing the second grade. Living within our protective bubble, attending a private school, and having my friends filtered through Grandmother Emma's eyes, I hadn't been exposed to the worldly side of things very much. I hadn't even known exactly how women became pregnant. It had still been one of those "somedays." Someday I'll tell you this; someday I'll tell you that.

For as long as she could, my mother hid my accelerated development from my grandmother, who made the March family appear so perfect and special that the common cold would turn and flee at the sight of her scowl. We were not permitted to do anything unusual or that could in any way be considered abnormal. In fact, in her eyes members of the March family simply were supposed to be too perfect and too strong to show signs of trouble or illness. If Grandmother Emma had even the slightest symptom of an ailment, she refused to leave her room. The world had to be brought to her until she was a March again.

Knowing this, having lived with it myself and seen firsthand how she could be, I appreciated the deep depression and defeat she was experiencing now back in the hospital, where she remained an invalid, stricken down by a stroke, confined to a bed and at the mercy of doctors, nurses and medicine. She had slipped off March Mountain. Ironically, both of us had been betrayed by our bodies, hers admitting to age and mine refusing to be governed by it.

Ian, who believed that nothing happened by coincidence, that everything had an understandable and explainable explanation, or what he called a cause and effect, once rattled off the downward slide of our family this way:

"Grandmother Emma and her husband, Blake, created Daddy's personality and weaknesses because of the manner in which they brought him up. They spoiled him and made him selfish. That's why he has not been a good father to us and a good husband for our mother, why he failed at business and why he womanized."

"What's womanized?" I asked him.

Ian's vocabulary was years ahead of my age, even years ahead of his own.

"He has sex with other women, Jordan."

"You mean with those tadpoles and eggs?"

He had once explained it all to me and showed me pictures of sperm, which had reminded me of tadpoles. At the time I'd had a great deal of trouble understanding the intricacies of the whole human reproduction process. Ian gave me a book about it on my seventh birthday. My mother was surprised he did that, but she thought it was probably sensible. To her, Ian was always more sensible than even my father, maybe especially my father. My grandmother, on the other hand, thought the book and Ian's giving it to me were disgusting. She, like my father, never understood Ian.

"Just listen," he said, impatient with my questions and interruptions. "I'm talking about our family, our father. His upbringing led him to make these choices and mistakes. Mother reacted to his mistakes and wanted to divorce him. Grandmother Emma, who refused to permit the word failure in the March vocabulary, talked Mother into backing down, but as you know, she called them up in the Pocono Mountains at the family cabin where they were meeting to iron out their problems and told them those lies about us, making me look like some pervert just because I was studying your accelerated development and she caught me measuring your budding breasts."

"Perverted isn't nice," I said, shaking my head. I loved demonstrating whatever kn...

Hated it
By kat
It's my own fault for not researching the book before I bought it, but I thought I was purchasing a novel. This falls more into the "Babysitter's Club" genre. I would put it at a third or fourth grade reading level, though I wouldn't actually recommend someone that age read it, due to some bizarre and unnecessary events and character traits.

The plot was weak and the character development was inconsistent, not to mention the author's flagrant use of race/class stereotypes. The characters were unbelievable and downright strange. To sum it up: it was painful to read.

Jordan March, the 7-year-old girl who entered puberty is back. She has a quasi-incestuous brother, Ian. All of the predictable elements are in this book except for twins. We have a cruel grandmother figure; a parent casualty; a brother one step away from crossing the line and the implausible events concerning Jordan. At 7, she is shipped out to an elderly relative and is expected to run the house including cooking.

Jordan just is not psychologically or socially ready for the changes puberty brings. She's supposedly in 3rd grade, yet she refers to her 6th grade classmates. She is the target of teacher abuse because she doesn't have a bra and at 7, understandably didn't think of wearing one. She is expected to be emotionally and socially ready for all the changes her body has undergone. This is an impossible thing to ask of a 7-year-old.

The plot was fragile and nothing there supported it. The characters were tawdy parodies. The family secrets are predictable. As another U.S. reviewer noted, there are insulting racial and socioeconomic stereotypes that were touted. This book is a genuine bust, sorry. Andrew Neiderman literally trod upon the VCA legacy by cranking out rubbish in her name.

Disappointed
By A. Nicole
This book had many flaws, including discrepancies in Jordan's age and her surroundings. I didn't find myself falling in love with the characters as I did with other novels, and I felt that the end was sloppy. Some aspects of the plot were left undeveloped. I've read all of VC Andrews' books (and those of the ghostwriter), and this was definitely my least favorite.

A wonderful addition to Diablo Universe Lore
By AuronX
Hardcore Diablo Lore fanatics (such as myself) need no encouragement to pick up the latest canon Diablo story book.

Even if that were not the case, I was so impressed with the author, Mr. Kenyon and his work on 'The Book of Cain' that I was more than prepared to pick up 'Storm of Light'.
The insight and all around information given on Cain's youth, his past, his regrets, inner thoughts... was phenomonal, as was Mr. Kenyon's prose and manner in telling the story.
The author once again does not disappoint in 'Storm of Light'.

For those on the fence, I highly recommend reading the previous stories within Diablo lore prior to reading this book, such as The Sin War Trilogy, Moon of the Spider, Sword of Justice (as well as the other comic book installments associated with the series) and The Black Road.

The reading material up above is not absolutely necessary in understanding the events of this story, however one of the major positives of 'Storm of Light' is its mentioning and inclusion of characters and referencing from the other books! I thought that was pretty awesome and came as quite the surprise. (Especially in regards to the 'The Black Road')

As other reviewers have commented, the story does struggle slightly during the middle.
I found the large ensemble cast of characters a double-edged sword (Pun intended) as I was impressed
with the inclusion of so many characters, yet it takes away from revealing too much of any single character or additional insights like 'The Book of Cain' did in regards to Deckard Cain.

Now if only we could see said characters within the actual game, even if just a small cameo.
Anyhow, happy reading everyone :D

Very Enjoyable
By SC fan
Another great chapter in the Diablo universe. This basically being a build up to the D3 expansion, it gives a much needed "lore boost" to those finding the game lacking.

However, it's an excellent addition to any fantasy lover's library regardless of being a fan of the game or even the Diablo fiction. Nate Kenyon is quickly becoming one of my new favorite fiction authors.

206 Bones: A Novel (A Temperance Brennan Novel), by Kathy Reichs

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs delivers another “outstanding” book (Publishers Weekly) in her “cleverly plotted” (The New York Times) Temperance Brennan series, the inspiration for the hit FOX television series Bones.

There are 206 bones in the human body. Forensic anthropologists know them intimately, can use them to reconstruct every kind of violent end. When Tempe finds herself regaining consciousness in some kind of very small, very dark, very cold enclosed space—bound, hands to feet—Tempe begins slowly to reconstruct...

Tempe and Lieutenant Ryan had accompanied the recently discovered remains of a missing heiress from Montreal to the Chicago morgue. Suddenly, Tempe was accused of mishandling the autopsy—and the case. Back in Montreal, the corpse of a second elderly woman was found in the woods, and then a third. Seamlessly weaving between Tempe’s present-tense terror as she’s held captive and her memory of the cases of these murdered women, Reichs reveals the incredible devastation that would occur if a forensic colleague sabotaged work in the lab. The chemistry between Tempe and Ryan intensifies as this complex, riveting tale unfolds, proving once again, that Reichs is the dominant talent in forensic mystery writing.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. At the start of bestseller Reichs's outstanding 12th thriller to feature Dr. Temperance Brennan (after Devil Bones), Brennan finds herself bound and injured in an underground tomb. In flashbacks, Reichs fills in the how and why of the forensic anthropologist's deadly predicament. When Brennan and Andrew Ryan of the Sûreté du Québec arrive in Chicago on business, she's accused of botching the autopsy of Rose Jurmain, a Canadian heiress. Knowing only that an anonymous caller instigated the investigation, Brennan is determined to uncover who's out to sabotage her. Back in her Montreal lab, Brennan soon realizes that not only is Jurmain's death possibly linked to the brutal murders of other elderly women but that whoever is out to tarnish her reputation refuses to back off. With her usual blend of cutting-edge forensic science and a stubborn, compelling heroine, Reichs manages to juggle several story lines without losing an ounce of momentum. (Aug.)

Review
"The science is fascinating, and every minute in the morgue with

Tempe is golden." --The New York Times Book Review

About the Author
Kathy Reichs is the author of eighteen New York Times bestselling novels featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Like her protagonist, Reichs is a forensic anthropologist—one of fewer than one hundred ever certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. A professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, she is a former vice president of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and serves on the National Police Services Advisory Council in Canada. Reichs’s own life, as much as her novels, is the basis for the TV show Bones, one of the longest-running series in the history of the FOX network.

Here Come the Latvians
By Renate Schneider
Being a Chicagoan, I very much enjoyed all the references to my city at the beginning of this novel. After several books that provided some background on Tempe (her sister, Harry; her family background)it was fun to read about her estranged husband's family, a lively bunch of Latvians!I found that this book, like the others, pulls me in, and what I anticipate will be "just a chapter or two" of reading invariably ends hours later, when I have finished the book, and the day is gone. The plots move quickly, and I just have to know what happens next, much to the detriment of my plans for the day. There have already been several reviews that discuss the plot; I see no point in belaboring that, except to say that there is always new knowledge to be gained, but the story line is fast paced and never preachy.I like that the author's passion for her profession comes through. It is still my fervent hope that Tempe ends up with Claudel and not Ryan, and I eagerly await the next book in hopes that Tempe's fascination with Ryan's blue eyes will be replaced by appreciation of Claudel's sartorial splendor!

"Something's very wrong."
By E. Bukowsky
"206 Bones," by Kathy Reichs, opens with Tempe Brennan realizing, to her horror, that she has been handcuffed and buried in some sort of underground crypt. She does not remember how she got there, but is understandably terrified. The author then traces the complicated series of events that led up to Tempe's abduction and entombment.

For the uninitiated, Temperance Brennan is a renowned forensic anthropologist who divides her time between laboratories in Montreal and the North Carolina. Her pal and partner in detection is the hunky Lieutenant-détective Andrew Ryan, who works for the Sûreté du Québec. The two have an on-again, off-again romance that is currently off, although they remain good friends. Tempe and Ryan have their hands full probing several convoluted mysteries, including the deaths of three elderly females as well as that of a fifty-nine year old woman whose body was found thirty months after she disappeared in Quebec. As a favor to a friend, they also try to learn the fate of a young man who fell or was thrown into a quarry. Ryan spends many hours tracking down potential witnesses and searching for physical evidence, while Tempe follows up leads of her own and carefully studies skeletal remains.

Reichs' strength lies in her encyclopedic knowledge of forensic anthropology. When Tempe talks bones, we listen. In addition, the author skillfully captures the bleakness of a harsh Montreal winter, with its icy temperatures, slick roads, and heavy snowfall. The bitter weather is a fitting counterpoint to Tempe's mood. She is indignant that some of her colleagues are challenging her competence, especially an ambitious newcomer named Marie-Andréa Briel. The reader suffers, as well, because Tempe's inquiries are not all that interesting. They lack the suspense and nail-biting tension that we have come to expect from this talented author. This is a talky novel with too much cutesy dialogue, and the author telegraphs the identity of the villains far too soon. When the bad guys are unmasked, few will be surprised. Another annoying element is Ryan and Tempe's silly banter; these two act more like lovesick teenagers than mature adults. "206 Bones" offers little suspense, a drawn-out and dull plot, and almost no character development. This series may be close to running its course.

Fast, entertaining read
By Amazon Customer
I read this in an afternoon--always a good sign. While I haven't read all of Kathy Reichs' books, I have really enjoyed the ones that I have. If you're a fan, you'll enjoy this one--a good mix of the familiar and the new. If you're a fan of the TV series, try not to think of the books as having any relation to the show--they're completely different in tone, style, and depth. I always prefer the books set in Montreal, as this one is, because I enjoy reading about its rich history. The book does serve up plenty of that. I don't want to get into plot-specifics because it is a mystery and why spoil the fun? But the characters, both main and supporting, are well-drawn and realistic, if not relatable.

The book loses a star for a blindingly obvious suspect that went unnoticed until the end and tangents that serve only to slow down the reader and show off the author's researching and/or trivia skills. Also, the very, very end devolves into what feels like a self-serving (although probably justifiable) tirade about qualifications to be a forensic anthropologist. While she may have a point, it was about a subtle as an anvil to the forehead and brought the book to a screeching halt. Granted, it was the last page so halting is to be expected, but the tone just didn't fit in with the overall book. But since I enjoyed the book, I'll let it go. This time.

A groundbreaking examination of new scientific research that holds the secret to weight loss, increased strength, endurance, memory, and a healthier, longer life

In The Longevity Factor, noted neuroscientist and surgeon Joseph Maroon, M.D., offers the definitive look at recent scientific breakthroughs identifying a group of natural substances -- including the much-publicized molecule resveratrol -- that can actually activate a specific set of genes in humans that promote a longer, healthier life. These substances, which make red wine, dark chocolate, and green tea good for us, appear to stave off a wide array of age-related diseases and keep us feeling young and vital.

Resveratrol is the centerpiece of headline-making research being conducted at the Harvard Medical School and elsewhere. Only recently, however, have scientists discovered how to isolate resveratrol and concentrate it into an affordable and safe supplement. Already, more than 200 supplements featuring resveratrol have flooded the market, and there are countless more on the way. But which ones work best? What is a consumer to look for on the label? Since resveratrol is a natural substance, can you get enough of it through diet alone, or should you combine diet with a supplement? And what lies on the horizon from the pharmaceutical industry? All those questions and many more are answered in this immensely informative and practical book.

Joseph Maroon offers the first-ever inside look at the amazing research that has led to the discovery of resveratrol and similar substances with the miraculous ability to activate our own longevity genes. He also offers his own diet plan and sound, reader-friendly advice for living a longer, healthier, and more balanced life with or without supplements. The Longevity Factor promises to be the authoritative source for everyone who wants to know more about how we can shift from the current paradigm of aging to a disease-free golden age of health, longevity, and fitness.

Chapter 1

The Origins of Life

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void....And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life...and every living creature that moveth...: and God saw that it was good.

-- GENESIS, CHAPTER 1

On the last day of February 1953, students and faculty members from the Cavendish Laboratory at England's University of Cambridge were having lunch at the Eagle pub, drinking Green King beer and enjoying the bar, with its graffiti from World War II airmen. At the top of the lunch hour, Francis Crick, a thirty-seven-year-old physicist turned biologist who had not yet earned his PhD, bounded in and loudly announced to his colleague, the zoologist turned geneticist James Watson, "We have found the secret of life!" Indeed they had. That morning, the two young scientists had deciphered the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) -- two strands of sugar connected by paired molecules called bases -- an accomplishment for which they would later win the Nobel Prize.

That structure, a "double helix" that can "unzip" to make copies of itself, was the finding that confirmed that DNA carried the hereditary code of life. Crick and Watson immediately published their findings in the scientific journal Nature, and capped a rather academic, dry account of DNA's structure with one of the most famous understatements in the history of science: "It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairings we have postulated immediately suggest a possible copying mechanism for genetic material" -- that is, of life.

Fifty years later, in 2003, another landmark paper appeared in the same prestigious international journal, also from a Cambridge laboratory, but this time in Massachusetts. The head of the Paul F. Glenn Laboratories for the Biological Mechanisms of Aging at Harvard Medical School, David Sinclair, and his associates published a paper entitled "Small Molecule Activators of Sirtuins Extend Saccharomyces cerevisiae Lifespan." A year later, another peer-reviewed journal, Molecular Microbiology, published their follow-up article, "Small Molecules That Regulate Lifespan: Evidence for Xenohormesis."

Sinclair explained that certain plants can increase production of specialized molecules during times of stress, such as drought or increased ultraviolet radiation from the sun. When consumed by animals, these plant molecules, which Sinclair called xeno factors, were found to interact with the animals' genes and impart amazing health benefits. Most astonishing was the observation that these laboratory animals lived substantially longer -- in some cases, up to 50 percent longer -- than their average expected life span. Tests for cell damage indicated that they were also much healthier, with fewer occurrences of cancer, heart disease, and brain cell deterioration than is normally seen with aging (see figure 1).

This discovery, which has since been confirmed in laboratories at MIT and the University of California, San Francisco, is revolutionizing our ideas of how and why we age. Because human DNA has important basic similarities with animal DNA, we also possess similar genes that can be activated by eating these specialized plant molecules. For the first time in human history, there is real evidence that we can use this process to slow aging and live not only longer but healthier.

In the Beginning

When I considered that the same stressed plant molecules could prolong life in yeast (evolutionarily approximately one billion years old), fish (500 million years old), and mammals (200 million years old), I became perplexed. What could possibly be the biological connection between the lowly yeast and humankind? To solve this scientific conundrum, I found myself going farther and farther back in time, asking more questions. What are the most basic molecular factors that all living things have in common? And is there a common biological language that makes all cells form, grow, function, reproduce, and die?

This incredible story of discovery may well begin with the formation of the universe nearly 14 billion years ago, when all the matter, energy, and space in what is now the observable universe were contained in a single infinitely dense point. From that point came a cataclysmic, fiery explosion commonly referred to as the "big bang" (see figure 2), in which space expanded and particles of the embryonic universe formed. These particles coalesced to form the billions of galaxies that now make up the universe, including our own Milky Way, with its own billions of stars.

After the big bang, incomprehensible amounts of heat and radiation were released and subatomic particles were formed -- including protons, neutrons, electrons, quarks, and baryons -- all of which would become the building blocks of life as we know it. This material cooled until approximately 4.5 billion years ago, when the earth was formed. Initially, as recorded in Genesis, water did completely cover the globe. There was no oxygen, only intense cosmic radiation, turbulent seas, volcanic eruptions, and frequent meteoric bombardments from outer space. During the next billion years, primary elements needed to support life were formed, including carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, calcium, copper, and iron.

The Origin of Life

It was indeed from the waters that life on our planet began. Charles Darwin, in 1871, made the suggestion that the original spark of life may have begun in a "warm little pond with all sorts of ammonia and phosphoric salts, light, heat, and electricity present, so that a protein compound was chemically formed that was ready to undergo still more complex changes." These changes led to a crucial step in the formation of life: the development of a more complex molecule that was itself capable of reproducing itself. The latest research now indicates that ribonucleic acid, or RNA -- a molecule similar to DNA -- may have been the first complex molecule on which life was developed. Like DNA, RNA contains genetic information, but it also performs chemical reactions, like some proteins. But proteins cannot reproduce on their own; that was the amazing feat accomplished by RNA.

RNA is the common ancestor that has given rise to the major cell lines of life. The first of these belongs to a type of bacteria called prokaryotes, which lack a cellular nucleus. Bacteria that are two to three billion years old have been discovered in ancient rocks from Australia. They have survived throughout the millennia due to the simplicity of their design and their ability to become dormant for long periods at a time.

The second cell line is the eukaryote. These cells contain a cell nucleus, separated from the rest of the cell by a membrane; this nucleus is where the cell's DNA is housed. The word eukaryote, which derives from ancient Greek, refers to the "true nucleus." Eukaryotic cells are the basic building blocks of all animal life, from single-celled organisms like amoebas to complex human beings. Interestingly, fungi, mushrooms, and yeast also have eukaryote cell types; this is why the study of yeast cells has been found helpful in understanding many human cellular functions.

Cells of the third type, the archaebacteria, a subset of prokaryotes, have been referred to as "life's extremists." These cells inhabit some of the most forbidding and remote environments on the planet, including the depths of hot springs, or extremely alkaline or acidic waters. They live in the mud of marshes and at the very bottom of the ocean, and they thrive in places hostile to all other life-forms.

The first animal cells appeared about 1.5 billion years ago, single-cell organisms that were able to reproduce. Protected by a cell membrane formed of protein and fats, they were also able to use raw materials that could be converted into energy, and to respond to changes in environmental temperature, acidity, or nutrient levels. These reactions were facilitated by specialized reactive molecules called enzymes.

Enzymes, which we will learn more about, are specialized proteins that act as catalysts and can help alter and form other more complex proteins and nucleic acids that make up RNA and DNA. They are critical to the function and survival of all living things. In his research, David Sinclair discovered one specific enzyme critical to longevity.

With the formation of algae and multicellular structures like jellyfish and plankton, the stage was set for the evolution of higher organisms. Yeast was formed approximately 900 million years ago. Although for thousands of years it was used for fermenting alcohol and making bread, yeast wasn't known to be a living organism until Louis Pasteur confirmed it in the 1860s. Yeast subsequently played a critical role, as we shall see, in the study of aging. Six hundred million years ago, the first animals, invertebrates such as sponges, jellyfish, worms, and insects, made their appearance on our planet. Plants eventually evolved from ancient green algae and populated the earth approximately 400 million years ago, shortly before the appearance of vertebrate animals about 380 million years ago (see figure 3).

After the abrupt eradication of the dinosaurs about 65 million years ago, following a dramatic drop in the earth's temperature, mammals began to proliferate, leading to the appearance of our humanlike ancestors approximately 2 million to 3 million years ago. Modern humankind is but a flash in the evolutionary night, being approximately 400,000 years old, with a recorded history less than 15,000 years old. Carl Sagan put this in perspective when he speculated on the evolution of human intelligence in his book The Dragons of Eden. He constructed a timeline in which the period from the big bang to the present moment was represented by a 365-day calendar year. In that scenario, all of recorded human history occupies the last ten seconds of December 31; the time from the waning of the Middle Ages to the present would occupy little more than one ...

Fantastic book
By Danattherock
As an ER nurse, I see more heart attacks than I would prefer. Thought the "French Paradox" was interesting, but I was skeptical. Turns out, the more research I do, the more credible it appears. This book had a page or two about muscadine wine. I was glad to see this as "The Red Wine Diet" did not. I give "The Longevity Factor" five stars for mentioning this. The other book was all about French red wines and did not speak one word of muscadine wine even though every source I can find suggest it is a far greater source of resveratrol. Muscadine wine is very popular in the Southeast, but not elswhere as the grapes will not grow in other regions. Muscadine was used for 8,000 years by native americans. Wines were made in the early 1500's in the New World as explorers found this grapes growing wild all over the coastal areas of the Southeast. Turns out, muscadine grapes have far more health benefits than traditional red wines. I have read anywhere from 10X to 40X the amount of resveratrol compared to traditional red wines. Bowman Gray School of Medicine (Wake Forest) did a study this past year on Natures Pearl, a muscadine seed supplement, and results should be out any time now. What I have seen so far looks very promising. A cardiology professor led the study and it is to be printed any time now for the public. Duplin Winery located in Rose Hill, North Carolina, the largest muscadine winery, sells a similar/same product Nutragrape. They have great wines and a very informative website as well. Harvard School of Medicine showed the anti-oxidants in muscadine wine increased mice life expectancy 30%, even with high fat diets. Reductions in LDH (bad cholesterol) and increases in HDL (good cholesterol) were significant. An independent lab in Wareham, Mass, Biotech, said that the muscadine seed had more resveratol in it than anything they had ever tested. I have contacted researchers from Miss State, Florida Univ, and other state level organizations and all my info says the same thing. Muscadine wine/grapes are far superior to all other red wines in regards to health benefits. It is perplexing to me. Why is so little said about this on a national level? Why do most the books and articles speak only of red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, etc..? Two thoughts on the subject. One, muscadine grapes only grow in the Southeast of the US and are just a well kept secret to the rest of the world. Two, the market for French, California, Argentina, Austalian, wines is so great, and is experiencing a surge as people start drinking red wine for health reasons, that it would hurt the sales of these wines if people found out that $7-15/bottle muscadine wine was more healthy. I am appreciative that the author of this book included the information on muscadine wine. Few books I have read to date included it. Perhaps this is a case of "sweet wines" not being given any credibility. Perhaps they just don't cost enough. Not sure. But I do know that there is no way I will be drinking the firm tannin, astringent, and expensive french red wines after the information I have discovered recently. I will be taking a Natures Pearl or Nutragrape supplement in the morning, putting a little muscadine jelly on my toast, and having a wonderful glass of sweet southern made muscadine wine with my evening meal. I encourage anyone to research this area further. I suspect you, like me, will be surprised at what you find out. As a sidenote, Smith-Glaxo-Kline (huge pharmaceutical corporation) recently payed 3/4 of a BILLION dollars for a study on resveratrol. I suspect the "Fountain of Youth" pill will be coming out in the next 5 years or so. Do some reading, dig a little beneath the surface and get past the hype of French red wines. Google "muscadine health" for starters.

The Longevity Factor
By M. Michenzi
Dr. Maroon,a very respected neurosurgeon, has presented a very convincing set of facts supporting the premise of gene activation for longevity. Although, as a nurse I have some advantage in understanding factors in health and disease, it is not necessary to thoroughly absorb the facts he presents. The book is extremely easy to read and hard to put down. I've already highly recommended the book to my friends and family. I'm grateful for his research in this subject.

I love this book!
By Daniel G. Amen
The Longevity Factor is a critically important book. Our society is going the wrong way and neuroscientist and neurosurgeon Joe Maroon is helping us get back on track. If you follow his advice you will be thinner, smarter, happier and be around long enough to tell people about it. The book reads like a mystery novel, is based on solid science, and makes you want to do things differently to enhance your health. I highly recommend it!!

HARD LIFE. HARD LUCK. HARD DRUGS.
HARD DEALS. HARD TIME.

Back in New York City, Seven was the seventh child. But here in Charlotte he's number one on every ladies' list. Even behind bars, he managed to sex a female corrections officer, who lost her job and found herself pregnant. Now Seven is out of the pen and back on the streets. A small-time dealer with big-time dreams, he's ready to take care of business -- for his baby, his baby's mother, his slammin' girlfriend, and his empty wallet. But first, he's got to play the game with the biggest pushers in town. He'll be a soldier for The Man. Then he'll rob the suckers blind before they figure out what's going down. Sure, it could get him killed. But Seven knows there are things in life worth living for -- and things worth dying for. And sometimes you can't tell the difference.

Really Enjoyed It
By Nichque
I understand what 50 is trying to do with the Novella's and I really like them. Although they are very short the books have good content within them. They are short reads so you should get three of them at a time if you can. But I enjoyed the Ski Mask Way !!..It was fresh and intriguing. Makes me want to read his other books !! ..Keep up the good work !!..

I Love the Book But....
By Just A Fan
I am a very average reader. And I have rarely read a book from the beginning to the end. Most of the time books I am reading, get boring at some point and as a end result I would stop reading them for a while, then I would start reading them again. But for that one, I swear I could not stop because every chapter was different, every persona were entertaining ( Butter was my favorite, he is what you call a real dude) and it kept you guessing until the end. I finished reading it in one day, I have never done that (Unless I had to), which shows how much I enjoyed it. I can see Ski Mask Way as a movie, I can see 50 Cent playing as Seven for example and Young Buck playing as Butter because he is from the south. The only thing I did not like about it, is the shameless self promotion 50 Cent is making in it. Out of all Music, why is it Mobb Deep, Lloyd Banks, and 50 Cent music the book characters are listening to? I thought it was out of context. That's the only reason why I didn't give it 5 Stars.

Living Hard
By Luv Tamm
Mr. Elliott done a good job with this book, I like his style of writing and he keeps you wanting more. Taking a walk with Elliott in to the world of Seven I got to see just how he got down for his, showing you his highs and lows all while tring to make away for his son. I enjoyed it, it was on point and stayed there. 50 did it again!

Amazing Insight into the World of Kong - A Must Have!
By Elizabeth A. Kidder
Having watched Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong three times already, I wondered so often during the film how they made it all look so real. I never doubted for a second that there was an uncharted island of the coast; it was all so real and vibrant I couldn't help believing. I wanted to know exactly how they created not only Skull Island and it's creatures, but the whole city of New York, the actor's takes on the movie, and Peter Jackson's vision. Having said so, I believe this is the best possible guide for the movie you could have.

Each page is a veritable explosion of color and detail as they take you through step-by-step, explaining the creations of miniatures and models, motion-capture of Andy Serkis, and blue and green screens suddenly turning into lush tropical jungles, or cold, dirty, city streets. They give histories into the Skull Island natives, personal actor narritations of their characters, and detailed explanations of the process of creating an image in the computer and bringing it to life on the big screen. This is one of those books with something for everyone, and you can skip around to whatever interests you most. Myself, I read the entire book and often went back to certain sections to just immerse myself in the creative genius of the people who made this production a reality. It also made me a bit amazed at times, when I learned that the famous log scene was conducted on a bucking constructed log in the middle of a sea of blue screens only 2 meters from the floor. Or that New York wasn't really New York at all. Or even that the biplanes were all reconstructed by hand from old blueprints, because there were no surviving ones. It also talked about teh detail put into the shop windows, where everything was bought or made by hand. After reading this, I had such a deep feeling of respect and amazment for the people who worked on this production, making it as realistic as possible. I know that sounds weird, because King Kong is a fantasy story, but with such heart and detail and life, it's hard to think of it as anything but real. In all, this is the perfect book for anyone who wants more insight into the world of Kong, or even wants to be entertained and amazed time and time again.

Fabulous companion to the movie
By Karen Miller
Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong is a huge movie, and this 'behind the scenes' companion is a wonderful complement to it. The book looks great, it's beautifully designed to tie in with the 30s era, it has great photos and is well laid out.

Even better, the writing is wonderful. Flowing, informative, conversational and always engaging, it really tells you about the processes of bringing this story to life.

Excellent book, well worth collecting.

A Fantastic Book!
By Raymond F. Gillis
Very simple...a fantastic book from a fantastic film. Well written and concise. The photography is perfect and fills you in on the myriad of details that went into this stunning film. The parts on how Wellington, New Zealand became New York are worth the price alone. The detail is overwhelming. As someone who lives in New York I was amazed that Peter Jackson and crew captured the rows of piers that once jutted out into the Hudson, towards Hoboken, New Jersey. This didn't have to be put in...yet is a small example of the attention, pure attention to detail that went into the making of this film. This will not destroy the mystery behind the making of this epic...it will enhance it.

$20.39 for a Kindle book!
By B. Wirth
This is the only forum to vent this but $20.39 for a Kindle book that Amazon is selling for $3.99 for paperback! I read the first 2 books in the series for less than $10.00 together. Why the HUGE price difference??? Such a shame cause I was really enjoying the series.

David Mack does it again!
By Hobgoblin
If you haven't read Vanguard book 1, "Harbinger", go back and do it now. If you like Trek, and you like strong character drama, you won't regret it.

After a superb introduction in "Harbinger", David Mack sat out for Book 2. The resulting effort was a mixed bag. Returning here for Book 3, Mack brings the series to top form. You get the Vanguard staple philosophical and moral dilemmas, alien perspectives, and sweeping space adventure. But lacking in Book 2 and back in spades here are the strong characterizations and deft wordsmithing of Harbinger. Simply put, Mack writes great, believable dialog and his narrative flies off the page. You'll find yourself effortlessly blasting through the chapters, eager for more.

My only criticism is that it became clear early on how one of the main threads would likely play out. I was a little surprised when the dominos fell exactly that way. Even so, this was a ripping read, expertly handled and thoroughly enjoyable. The adventure is only the vehicle that the characters ride in anyway, and the characters are what make this series great.

To those new to Vanguard it's worth saying that there are no status quo resets at the end of each episode. Vanguard is more like an ongoing saga, not an adventure of the week series. Nowhere is that more evident than in this book. Since Mack is not doing Book 4, it will be very interesting to see how someone else picks up the pieces of this installment.

In summary, Mack is a phenomenal author and Vanguard is a phenomenal series. I'm hooked. Bring on more Vanguard!

Ebook price can't be right ?
By C. Tompkins
I loved this series of books (I have Paperbacks, normal price), and my husband wants to read them on his Kindle,
I "contacted" the publisher to ask about the ebook price. Maybe if others do too they will fix it because seems like it has to be a mistake.

Edited May 2014 - ebook price is now down to normal, and has been for a while. Thank goodness !
