Eccentric Glamour: Creating an Insanely More Fabulous You, by Simon Doonan

Simon Doonan's ECCENTRIC GLAMOUR is intended as an antidote to the epidemic of slutty dressing and porno-chic which has taken over since the arrival of Paris Hilton and Tara Reid. In Simon's utopian world, conformity is the only crime and dressing down is the only faux-pas. Doonan believes that eccentric glamour is every woman's birthright. While the typical TV boobs 'n' botox make-overs force Everywoman to look the same - exhibit A: "The Real Housewives of Orange County" - the transformations which he strives to provoke in this book are the very opposite. Developing a glamorously eccentric style involves revealing and magnifying everything which is distinctive and idiosyncratic about you. This book is by no means a typical style advice manual. In ECCENTRIC GLAMOUR you will find a unique mixture of cultural commentary and personal disclosure, generously seasoned with gushings of wildly dictatorial, provocative and reckless style advice and evenly sprinkled with one-on-one interviews with some the World's most glamorous eccentrics, including Iman, Lucy Liu, Tilda Swinton, Malcolm Gladwell, Chloe Sevigny, and Dita Von Teese.

From Publishers Weekly
Entertaining and bitingly witty, Doonan (Confessions of a Window Dresser) calls upon the women of America to embrace their inner potential for dressing idiosyncratically, conventions be damned. But in making clear his fondness for vulgarity and bits of bad taste, he is clear about the downright hideous: fannypacks, for instance, are close to blasphemy. Doonan is uninhibited in revealing certain truths many outside the fashion industry tend to throw in its face: yes, there is more to life than clothing, and yes, the world of high style is often "depressing." Before one praises him for single-handedly unveiling the dirty underbelly of Fashion Week, it's worth noting his reliance on heavyweight figures such as Iman, Isabel Toledo, Lucy Liu and Hamish Bowels to provide their own insights via mini-surveys. Entertaining anecdotes from Doonan's life pepper the text, though his own style can at times be flippant or offensive (as when musing on how he would dress were he a butch lesbian).

Fun for fashion and non-fashion folk alike
By Liz Lynch
Although I am not sure everyone fits in Simon Doonan's 3 categories of fashion sense (Gypsy, Existentialist and Socialite), it doesn't matter. This book is great fun and had me laughing out loud all the way thru. I always read a little something from him when I need a pick me up!

I love this book simply for Simon Doonan's writing! He is sharp, witty and provocative and I found myself laughing out loud at some of his observations. Not so much about fashion but more about attitude, this book is a fun read.

Inspiration For Us Oddballs
By S. G. Lake
I'm going to flat out admit it, I'm an eccentric
nut.I talk to the cats I meet on my morning walk,
I still play records on a record player, and I find
it much easier to shop in thrift stores vs. regular
retail.I still gravitate towards the same kind of
pieces I went for in my younger days.I usually wear an
effortless "uniform" of a black blazer jacket, black jeans or pants,
Black t-shirts or sweaters, & Converse lowtops.( I do a lot of walking, I need comfy shoes.)
I love this book because it's not the usual bourgeois style guide.
It's given me the guts to be okay with myself, goofy quirks & all.
I'm "a dyed in the wool Existentialist".I like to get a lot of value for what I spend on clothing
so I'm not into overly expensive clothes.I only own two purses-one black, one brown, bought at
The Thrift.I'm "50 plus" I gave up on being "sophisticated" years ago.I'm into accepting myself as
"immature" as I'll always be and will eternally stay. :)
If you do own this book hang onto it and refer back to it from time to time, especially
in times your self esteem takes a bit of a knock. There will always be people
out there who can't quite grasp the concept of "just being yourself", they can't leave well
enough alone, and they are just itching to get at you and tear you into little bits. Don't listen
to them. If you can stay true to "yourself" you are on the right track.
Just follow your own path and be the interesting, quirky person you were
meant to be,and always keep "a young spirit" no matter what!

Darkness at Noon, by Arthur Koestler

Originally published in 1941, Arthur Koestler's modern masterpiece, Darkness At Noon, is a powerful and haunting portrait of a Communist revolutionary caught in the vicious fray of the Moscow show trials of the late 1930s.

During Stalin's purges, Nicholas Rubashov, an aging revolutionary, is imprisoned and psychologically tortured by the party he has devoted his life to. Under mounting pressure to confess to crimes he did not commit, Rubashov relives a career that embodies the ironies and betrayals of a revolutionary dictatorship that believes it is an instrument of liberation.

A seminal work of twentieth-century literature, Darkness At Noon is a penetrating exploration of the moral danger inherent in a system that is willing to enforce its beliefs by any means necessary.

Review
"One of the few books written in this epoch which will survive it."
-- New Statesman (UK)

"It is the sort of novel that transcends ordinary limitations. Written with such dramatic power, with such warmth of feeling, and with such persuasive simplicity that it is as absorbing as melodrama."
-- The New York Times Book Review

"A rare and beautifully executed novel."
-- New York Herald Tribune

"A remarkable book. A grimly fascinating interpretation of the logic of the Russian revolution, indeed of all revolutionary dictatorships, and at the same time a tense and subtly intellectualized drama."
-- The Times Literary Supplement (London)

About the Author
Born in Budapest in 1905, educated in Vienna, Arthur Koestler immersed himself in the major ideological and social conflicts of his time. A communist during the 1930s, and visitor for a time in the Soviet Union, he became disillusioned with the Party and left it in 1938.  Later that year in Spain, he was captured by the Fascist forces under Franco, and sentenced to death. Released through the last-minute intervention of the British government, he went to France where, the following year, he again was arrested for his political views.  Released in 1940, he went to England, where he made his home. His novels, reportage, autobiographical works, and political and cultural writings established him as an important commentator on the dilemmas of the twentieth century. He died in 1983.

The First Hearing

Nobody can rule guiltlessly.-- Saint-Just

Chapter One

The cell door slammed behind Rubashov.

He remained leaning against the door for a few seconds, and lit a cigarette. On the bed to his right lay two fairly clean blankets, and the straw mattress looked newly filled. The wash-basin to his left had no plug, but the tap functioned. The can next to it had been freshly disinfected, it did not smell. The walls on both sides were of solid brick, which would stifle the sound of tapping, but where the heating and drain pipe penetrated it, it had been plastered and resounded quite well; besides, the heating pipe itself seemed to be noise-conducting. The window started at eye level; one could see down into the courtyard without having to pull oneself up by the bars. So far everything was in order.

He yawned, took off his coat, rolled it up and put it on the mattress as a pillow. He looked out into the yard. The snow shimmered yellow in the double light of the moon and the electric lanterns. All round the yard, along the walls, a narrow track had been cleared for the daily exercise. Dawn had not yet appeared; the stars still shone clear and frostily, in spite of the lanterns. On the rampart of the outside wall, which lay opposite Rubashov's cell, a soldier with slanted rifle was marching the hundred steps up and down; he stamped at every step as if on parade. From time to time the yellow light of the lanterns flashed on his bayonet.

Rubashov took his shoes off, still standing at the window. He put out his cigarette, laid the stump on the floor at the end of his bedstead, and remained sitting on the mattress for a few minutes. He went back to the window once more. The courtyard was still; the sentry was just turning; above the machine-gun tower he saw a streak of the Milky Way.

Rubashov stretched himself on the bunk and wrapped himself in the top blanket. It was five o'clock and it was unlikely that one had to get up here before seven in the winter. He was very sleepy and, thinking it over, decided that he would hardly be brought up for examination for another three or four days. He took his pince-nez off, laid it on the stone-paved floor next to the cigarette stump, smiled and shut his eyes. He was warmly wrapped up in the blanket, and felt protected; for the first time in months he was not afraid of his dreams.

When a few minutes later the warder tuned the light off from outside, and looked through the spy-hole into his cell, Rubashov, ex-Commissar of the People, slept, his back turned to the wall, with his head on his outstretched left arm, which stuck stiffly out of the bed; only the hand on the end of it hung loosely and twitched in his sleep.

By J. Drews
Wanted to read this book for a long time. Finally did. I feel like I will reread this many times because I truly enjoyed the writing.. the complexities behind what was going on in the reality of Stalinist Russia, and how the ideology of the Party allowed for members to eat their own once they were expendable and used up. Very gripping and telling of what happens when a government is given this ultimate control over the people, and the horrors that happen against human nature when the views and stability of the Party override fundamental human rights and liberty.

The view from inside the dustbin of history
By M. A. Krul
Arthur Koestler's "Darkness at Noon", his magnum opus, is more than just a book. It is not a novel, nor is it an essay; it is a memory and an experience, a warning and a vision. It takes the reader into a nightmare world that is nevertheless real, an alternative history that is more history than alternative, and if he has a sensitivity to questions of history and politics, it is sure to be imprinted on his mind forever. In summary, it's one of the most powerful political books of the 20th Century.

The theme of the book is the experience of Stalinism, in particular the Stalinist Great Purges and the show trials during the late 1930s. Arthur Koestler himself was a Party socialist for much of his life, and only left the Soviet Union in 1938. Having known many of the Old Bolsheviks personally, he saw the state of the revolution taken over by Stalin and his henchmen, and witnessed the slow (and sometimes fast) destruction of the revolutionary old guard.

It's the experiences of this infamous Great Terror of communism, seen from the eyes of a communist, that form the basic of this book. The plot is rather limited in scope: the protagonist, N.S. Rubashov (probably loosely modelled after Bukharin), is arrested for 'counterrevolutionary crimes', and spends the rest of the book in prison, being interrogated and prepared for the inevitable show trial. This of itself is not particularly clever, but that is not the core of the book.

The real core of the book is Rubashov's fundamental theoretical paradoxical position: all his life he has believed in submitting the "subjectivity" of the individual to the demands of the Party, in the knowledge that they were building a future for mankind. All his life he has believed in History working its will, in the inevitable eventual victory of the right over the wrong. Yet now this same history has taken a turn, and he and the works of his generation are destroyed by the progeny of his own revolution. His interrogators, first the cynical intellectual Ivanov and later the farmer's son-turned-cadre Gletkin, want him to sign a series of damning confessions that are palpably false, which all parties involved know. Yet if the Party demands this of him, if this indeed is the will of History, can he resist? And moreover, how is it possible to begin with that the revolution led to the terror of "No. 1", the totalitarian Party leader?

Through a series of short but thrilling scenes in interrogation and longer periods of reflection, monologue interieure, and flashbacks, the downfall of a committed revolutionary and intellectual and his generation are painted as vividly and profoundly as one could demand of literature. This book is more powerful than Orwell's "1984" and yet more understanding than any of the common anti-communist works of the last century; it is a testament, dedicated to the generation of Trotsky, Bukharin, Rykov, Tomsky, Rakovsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev, and all the other fighters for socialism at the birth of that bloodiest of centuries.

"1984" in 1938
By Gerald Brennan
I'm afraid to read anything else by Arthur Koestler.

"Darkness at Noon," his excellent novel about an aging revolutionary awaiting a show-trial and execution in Stalin's Soviet Union, is so thoroughly compelling and readable, alive with ideas and general brilliance, and so widely recognized as Koestler's masterpiece, that I fear his other books will be disappointing by comparison.

This, on the other hand, may well be my favorite book. Ever. Despite the fact that my "to-read" pile is a paper stalagmite that grows faster than I can chip away at it, I ripped through this one twice in under six months, and if I were somehow locked in the bathroom with only this on the toilet tank, and forced to start it a third time--I can't imagine this actually happening, but bear with me here--I can't say I'd be all that disappointed.

This reads like "1984," but it preceded Orwell's book, and presumably greatly influenced it. More importantly, although the real 1984 eventually rolled around to make Orwell's dystopia seem at least somewhat absurd (in execution, if not idea and desire), this still feels incredibly realistic.

And scarily, this is more relevant to today's America. While our level of freedom and political discourse may be completely different than that of Stalin's Soviet Union, the methods they used would not be unfamiliar in Guantanamo or Abu Grahib--or in some police precincts. Not the shrill and scary tactics of "1984," but the soft and simple: psychological games, sleep deprivation, and the like. Sleep deprivation may seem downright kind in the pantheon of torture, and I'm sure it starts off relatively innocuously--"They're terrorists, they're criminals, so why should we coddle them? Why should they get a good night's sleep?"--but any tactic whereby one compels the body to betray the mind is torture. And the sad thing is that torture doesn't work. Forget all the crazy ticking time-bomb scenarios, the fact is simple. Torture. Doesn't. Work. It does not provide reliable information or accurate confessions. And this book shows why. Rubashov, kept up for days on end, becomes willing to say or do anything for a few blessed moments of sleep. He will sell himself out. He will say anything. He will lie.

The strange peculiarity of Soviet Russia is that the victim and the torturers both know these lies are lies. But he says them, and they listen, because they both have their roles to play. The show trial is not really a trial. It is only a show.

But the great thing about "Darkness at Noon" is that it isn't just a polemic about tactics or a lesson about history; it is a powerful meditation on good and evil, and the extent to which we allow the latter in the short term because we believe it will somehow help us get the former in the long term. One reads this and feels sympathy not just for Rubashov, but for his interrogators, because they grapple with a timeless question: can we, and should we, make today difficult and imperfect and unjust for the sake of a better tomorrow?

This is a weighty question, and the book abounds with such meditations: like Dostoyevsky's works--to which it is clearly in debt--it is a philosophical novel with true weight and depth. In "The Grand Inquisitor", one of the most famous chapters in literature, Dostoyevsky concocts a prison scene in which the head of the Spanish Inquisition discourses to Jesus on why the Church felt it necessary to behave in ways contrary to Jesus' teachings. And this book feels like "The Grand Inquisitor" writ large. Though it revolves around ideology instead of religion, the effect is similar--disciples explaining to the master why they needed to stray, why they needed to corrupt and pervert their beliefs in order to save them from external enemies, why they needed to destroy the movement in order to save it.

On this and many other issues, Rubashov ponders but--importantly--does not always come up with clear answers. "How can one change the world if one identifies oneself with everybody?" he muses early on, then asks, "How else can one change it? He who understands and forgives--where would he find a motive to act? Where would he not?" I don't think Koestler wants to give us answers. Like the best artists, he's not so much interested in telling us what to think as he is in making us think. It's not always about finding answers; it's about remembering to ask questions. And that's something we need to remember today.

The story behind the bottle, First Big Crush is Eric Arnold's wild account of his year immersing himself in all things wine. . . and somehow not winding up in rehab. Never having held a meaningful job for very long (and getting fired from most of them), Eric Arnold heads to New Zealand -- to Allan Scott Wines -- seeking adventure and hoping to learn a little bit about wine. What could be better than working outside in the fresh air and drinking wine all day? Before he knows it, he is dirty, wet, cold, and at the mercy of a tank of wine that just might explode and take him with it. So begin Eric's adventures in the world of wine. He gets sunburned, sore, and drunk -- and then does it all over again the next day. First Big Crush is a story that is as outrageous as it is compelling. Here are tales of first pressings, pruning, and tasting competitions. There are also rowdy nights at the local pub, girls, meat pies, girls, rugby, and tales of hunting wild pig. Along the way, each step of the winemaking process is explained in a way that humans can actually understand. Almost against his will, Eric becomes an expert.

Review
"How refreshing! The world according to Arnold shows it isn't all Grand Cru and roses. This is the hilarious, honest, knock-it-off-the-pedestal account of how it really happens. We come away better informed, trusting our own palate, and with our vinous compass pointed to fun!"

-- Richard Betts, master sommelier and cofounder of Betts & Scholl wines

"I've collected wine since the '70s, but I never thought about making it. Now that I've read this book, I really don't want to make it. I'll stick with drinking it."

-- Sammy Hagar, singer/songwriter and founder of Cabo Wabo Tequila

""First Big Crush" is unlike any wine book I've ever read, a hugely entertaining hybrid of the participatory journalism of George Plimpton, the hallucinatory journalism of Hunter Thompson, and frat house bathroom graffiti. He's a bull in the china shop of wine writing and it's a pleasure to see him breaking everything in sight."

-- Jay McInerney, author of "The Good Life"

""First Big Crush" is a literary love child of "Maxim" and "Wine Spectator: " a raunchy, rollicking tale of a young guy's year in the vineyards of New Zealand, where his love of wine matures -- somewhat -- from the hunt for a cheap buzz to a genuine passion and appreciation."

-- Ted Allen, host/narrator of the PBS series "Uncorked: Wine Made Simple, " food and wine specialist for Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, " and author of "The Food You Want to Eat"

About the Author

Excellent read, from Marisa D'Vari of AWineStory.com
By Marisa D'vari, DWS
So you've seen the film Sideways and know how geeky wine aficionados can get about their favorite grape. Hey, you've been there too after a few glasses of Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon. Once upon a time you felt pretty slick about your wine savvy, but now you're curious to learn more. How is wine made, anyway? What happens during the harvest? Are grapes stomped, Lucille Ball style, by humans standing in a large wooden cask, or is it a mechanical process?

Duly motivated, you zip off to the store and find dozens of books detailing how wine is made. Yet after skimming the dry, dense, detailed paragraphs that remind you of your high school chemistry textbook, your eyes glaze over.

Enter Eric Arnold, whose new book, First Big Crush, is a colorful, laugh-out-loud funny account of his tenure during a New Zealand grape harvest, filled with wacky real-life characters. Of course, I should have figured as much. The first time I saw Arnold, on a WineSpectator.com video clip, he was cleaning the interior of a wine tank, gangly jean-covered legs waving in the air. This guy, I thought, is up for anything.

What first brings Arnold, then an unemployed editor, to Alan Scott Wines in New Zealand is the prospect of getting paid to lazily drink wine in the sun. Very quickly, Arnold discovers winemaking is real work, and dangerous at that. One day, he shows up for his assigned task without boots, expecting to simply push a button. To his surprise, he's expected to kick a half-ton container of grapes, and nearly loses a toe. Instead of sympathizing, Arnold's New Zealand colleagues taunt him, asking why he's walking like a girl.

Arnold's first-person voice is candid and bold, his literary style so lively you won't feel you're reading text as much as you are experiencing the harvest at Arnold's side. In one scene, he is told to walk through the rows of grape vines with a bucket and randomly grab fistfuls of grapes. What activity could possibly be more repetitive and boring? Arnold must have thought long and hard about how to make the process of grabbing grapes colorful and descriptive for the reader, for here is how he chronicles it: "Essentially, you're simulating the world of a machine harvester, which doesn't discriminate, ripping everything off like it just got out of prison and the vine is the dress on a twenty-dollar whore."

In the course of these hilarious 245 pages, you also learn a great deal about Arnold and his twenty-something, slightly slacker-esque, and very male way of viewing the world. For instance, when discussing his relationship with a French girlfriend, he writes, "I'm afraid this isn't the part where I tell you that she took me back to France and taught me everything there is to know about Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne. She had so little interest in food and wine - plus she didn't smoke and she shaved her armpits - that they must have kicked her out of France for not being French enough."

First Big Crush is a highly entertaining but solid primer about the wine making process, told from the vantage point of a likable and very direct narrator. If you've ever wondered how wines are judged in competition, or what factors influence the pricing of wine, you'll see the process through Arnold's eyes. And if you ever fantasized about what it is like to work the harvest but didn't want to get wet and dirty, you can get the vicarious experience right here.

Of Grapes and Men
By Barbara Hudgins
Lately there have been a number of travel memoirs in the "how I took a year off and did something crazy in a foreign country" mode. Usually these travels have been inspired by a great emotional upheaval in the writer. Consider the current bestseller, "Eat, Pray, Love" in which the author goes off to Italy, India and Indonesia to recover from a love affair and reinvent her life. Or the past bestseller, "Under the Tuscan Sun" which also had a writer take off to find a new life after tumult in the old one.

However, there was no such sturm and drang in the life of 29-year-old Eric Arnold. He set off for a year to New Zealand to become immersed in grapes and the wine-making process for no better reason than he thought it was a good idea. After a few years of working at various hack writing jobs he decided to chuck it all for an up-close look at the burgeoning wine industry Down Under.
What we get is a short description of the farming community of Marlborough situated in the southern island of New Zealand, and a ton of details on the growing, pruning, and picking of grapes and then squeezing and squishing them through modern steel tanks.
During the year, Eric joins in the everyday work of the winery (which includes some close encounters with errant steel hoses and tank closures) and the more rarified tasks of tastings and competitions. This is winemaking 101 with a few side pictures of New Zealanders at work and play. While the men work 12-hour days during the season, play consists of mostly drinking, fighting, finding girls and losing their teeth at the occasional Rugby match.
The snobbism of wine sophisticates seems at a variance with the down-to-earth reality of grape-growing and wine mixing. Arnold points out that this is a farm isolated in the middle of a country where sheep outnumber people by a wide margin. He also throws in some off-color jokes to let us know this is testosterone country. Although he portrays himself as a slacker, he comes through all the wet, harried days to become a more mature man. Or at least a more mature drinker who can now judge wine with the best of them rather than just quaffing down the stuff to get a buzz. Since he now has a job at Wine Spectator he must have learned something. And he does his utmost in 245 pages to teach us what that is.

From Publishers Weekly
First-time novelist Silver spins an unlikely if entertaining tale connecting mysteries concerning the abdication of King Edward VIII, WWII and the death of Princess Diana. Present-day Yale history professor Amy Greenberg journeys to Dublin to pick up the contents of a previously unknown safety deposit box leased by her deceased grandfather—which turns out to be an unpublished, nonfiction manuscript written in 1964 by Ian Fleming of James Bond fame: "You see, I've been sitting on a terrible secret since the war." The Fleming manuscript, alternating chapters with the contemporary story, details how Edward, after abdicating, formed a secret relationship with Adolf Hitler. The modern-day sections of the book consist mostly of Amy and her boyfriend, Scott Brown, fighting off a host of villains who want to steal, for rather obscure reasons, the Fleming material. Silver delights in making the sometimes improbable historical links that form the basis of his plot, and his high spirits are so contagious that readers will happily go along for the ride. (May)

A Compelling Contemporary Thriller That Would Have Pleased Ian Fleming
By John Kwok
"In Secret Service" is a compelling, nail-biting homage to Ian Fleming from first-time author Mitch Silver; a gripping historical thriller which, I am certain, would have pleased the old master himself. Silver has carved himself a vast historical canvas, and has rendered a gripping yarn about a dark secret dating from World War II. A secret ferreted out none other than by Ian Fleming himself, and recounted in a "memoir" that comprises much of the novel. Four decades after Fleming completes his unpublished "memoir", a young American art historian travels to Ireland, and there, claims her odd literary inheritance, which Fleming has bequeathed to her. Soon she realizes that Fleming's unpublished work is not just a compelling memoir that's been hidden deep within the vaults of a Dublin bank, but one whose dark secret will take her on an epic, almost nonstop, relentless journey back home. Pitting herself against secret agents and assassins eager to use every deadly foul means at their disposal towards retrieving that manuscript, she realizes soon enough that her trek home is a desperate struggle to stay alive. Silver's historical research is quite admirable in both its scope and detail; readers will wonder whether many the events described are real, especially when we are introduced to such major real-life figures as Winston Churchill, Edward, Duke of Windsor, and Anthony Blunt. But, most importantly of all, Silver takes his readers on a glorious fictional saga worthy of comparison to James Bond's, and giving us more than a mere glimpse as to what the real-life adventures of former British naval spy Ian Fleming were during the course of World War II.

More character, less backstory, still a good 1st novel
By S. Goldberg
I'm going through my stack of freebie books that I snagged from my previous job before I left them. Right now, I'm almost finished reading In Secret Service by Mitch Silver. It's a bit of historical fiction with a heavy emphasis on fiction, and the main character, Dr. Amy Greenberg, is rather delightful although we don't get to see much of the good Doctor throughout much of the story. If I had any comment to make for future books from this author, I'd make the suggestion to show more of the action character in the story.

Granted, I'm reading this from a free, advance reading copy, so there may have been some minor changes to the final print edition, but I doubt that there were any major ones. The story details what happens when an ordinary person, Dr. Greenberg, finds herself suddenly in the middle of an international intrigue whose roots go back to King Edward VIII and his sudden departure from the British throne.

In one sense, this book reminds me of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Her book also uses the parallel movement of modern day life and historical fiction to tell a story. I think The Historian is superior in its ability to move the plot forward in both timelines, but I think In Secret Service does a better job creating a protagonist with whom the modern American reader can more easily identify.

I wish In Secret Service would use a bit more movement in the present timeline. There are long stretches where the reader is simply reading over Dr. Greenberg's shoulder, and nothing else happens in those moments except for the unfolding of the historical fiction in the past timeline. Nevertheless, with only 42 pages left to go in this novel, the author will really have to drop the ball and squash it with his foot in order to make me lose the interest in the storyline and the main character which I have at this point.

I'm looking forward to Mitch Silver's next book.

This isn't James Bond (or anything close)
By DragonRock LTD
I listened to the audio version and if I hadn't been stuck in a car for 2 days, I probably wouldn't have finished the story. First of all my biggest gripe is that it is NOT a spy story (which was why I bought it). It is half conspiracy theory and half . . . fake memoir.

Basic plot is: Girl gets strange manuscript as inheritance and proceeds to read it during her trip while missing all sorts of clue that the conspiracy is closing in around her. Big finale is girl and fiancee running around a museum like screaming ninnies while trying to get away from conspiracy thugs.

The fake memoir part is at least interesting and made me want to research it to find out the real vs fake rate. (Haven't done so yet.)

The book (which I flipped through) does have some cool production. The "evidence" that comes with the memoir is put in the book. For example 1/2 of a torn letter is a big piece of evidence and on that page you see a 1/2 of a torn letter in handwriting. That part was cool.

I can't recommend reading this book but if you want to, I feel no qualms about telling you to skip ALL of the 'modern' parts involving the girl. You gain nothing from them.

From Publishers Weekly
This enticing debut novel from journalist Griffin follows Feenie Malone, a young part-time reporter at a south Texas town newspaper, struggling to make ends meet after her divorce. Hoping to get some respect in the newsroom, ambitious, independent Feenie begins pursuing a hot story involving her ex-husband and a felon, Rico Martinez, who appear to be in business together. Hunky, headstrong P.I. Marco Juarez offers to help Feenie investigate the criminal, but Juarez has his own agenda—namely, finding out who killed his sister, a cop, two years earlier. Though the strong leads' no-nonsense dialogue can wear early on, imminent danger and mutual attraction soften them nicely, giving this able suspense thriller a satisfyingly steamy core; Griffin's fully fleshed characters, dry humor and tight plotting make a fun read and a promising career kickoff. Thoroughly enjoyable romantic suspense with a side of comedy
By Tracy Vest
Feenie Malone is a cub reporter hoping to make a name (and full time job) for herself at a local paper. When she stumbles across the story of a lifetime - the possibility that her cheating ex-husband Josh might be involved with a notorious drug dealer, she soon becomes a target. Enter sexy PI Marco Juarez, who caught Feenie at her worst when he was a beat cop. Trumped up drug charges led to his dismissal and distrust of the corrupt police force. Marco enlists Feenie's aid in investigating Josh and his cohorts, who he believes are involved in the disappearance of his sister Paloma, a narcotics officer who disappeared without a trace two years earlier.

Griffin's debut romantic suspense is laced with some pretty comical moments. The pairing of Marco and Feenie is at times hilarious; the two work together making Nick and Nora look like professionals. I would have liked for the character of Josh to be a little more developed, he is pretty one-dimensional in the story. But overall, it was a well written, funny and engaging romantic suspense.

Francis is a male's name. Frances is the female spelling. The book was written well and I enjoyed it, but the incorrect spelling
By Susan Green
The spelling of Feenie's given name is incorrect. Francis is the male version of her name. Frances is the spelling of the female version. I have lived with this my whole life.

Excellent creative guide to packing lunch on the go!
By J. Arena
Lunch Boxes and Snacks: Over 120 healthy recipes from delicious sandwhiches and salads to hot soups and sweet treats is a great guide for the end of boredom at school and at work. Everything here is packable, nutritious and wonderfully good-tasting.

The book includes information on how to keep food safe after it leaves your refrigerator and how to involve kids in the selection and process.

But, be advised that it is great for adults also. We get bored with everyday same-old same-old, too!

I purchased this book on a whim while food-shopping at a mega-market. I flipped through it over coffee and went right back to the aisles for some immediate meal transformations.

I don't regret purchasing it!

Give new life to your lunchbox
By Amazon Customer
I am not the most creative person when it comes to packed lunches, but this book makes it easy! Many ingredients are easily found, and likely to be in your fridge or pantry already. Many you can make with leftover foods such as cooked chicken, or the 2 tablespoons of corn left over from dinner. Most are items my daughter will readily eat without complaint. For health reasons, we decided to stop eating cafeteria food and started packing our own. I ran out of ideas rather quickly and knew we had to break away from PB&J, so I ordered this book. What's great it that it's "adult friendly" too. No smiley face sandwiches or mac and cheese here...just healthy food made easy. Our kiddo is now the envy of the lunch room!

At least half of these recipes are inappropriate for lunch boxes.
By Daedalus18
Does a cold omelet that has been sitting around sound like something your child would eagerly scarf down at lunch time? If so - this may be the book for you. Other suggestions for cold lunches include half a dozen pizzas, cold muffins with creamy scrambled eggs, cold sticky drumsticks (w/ foil around the bottoms, so your kid won't get sticky fingers when throwing away a nasty cold sticky drumstick their parent packed for them), cold quesadillas, and tons of ideas for letting eggs and mayonnaise sit in a slightly cooled container until noon.

The other half of the book has some good suggestions - some pasta salads, wraps, and decent muffin and cookie suggestions.

I just don't see how anyone would have approved a title with the word "Lunch Boxes" in it, when that is the term associated with school packed lunches. If adults can heat food at work - these may work, but for the most part this book is not useful to parents trying to pack healthy delicious food for their kid's lunches.
