About the Author

A Worthy Sequel

This novel is definitely well worth the 10 year wait! I thoroughly enjoyed playing catch-up with Gayle, Pat & Marcus. DeBerry and Grant allows us to revisit with the best friends turned successful business partners. We also get a peek at Pat and Marcus' marriage, which has more or less just become a comfortable co-existence, as they have ceased being the loving, "happily married" couple. And Vanessa has definitely grown up with a chip on her shoulder and the all too familiar attitude of a spoiled and selfish teenager.~~~~~~~DeBerry and Grant also touch on several serious social issues throughout their sequel (eating disorders, domestic violence, infidelity, paternity and more) and they handle each in a very responsible, yet entertaining manner.~~~~~~~This sequel shows us how fame and fortune doesn't always equal happiness. It's was great to get reacquainted with past characters, but, I also enjoyed the introduction of the well-developed cast of new characters. They added quite a bit of intrigue and suspense to an already emotionally charged tale. As a fan I definitely wouldn't mind reading more about DeJohn and Tiffani...hint, hint...happily awaiting a follow-up novel...LOL! KUDOS to Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant on turning out a TOTALLY inspiring sequel!

I enjoyed Trying to Sleep so very much that I almost didn't read this sequel! I was actually afraid it would be awful and taint the euphoria I felt when I read the first book! I'm pleased to say it was good! It was nice to catch up with "old friends" who are still growing and evolving.

Great Cookbook Period

Great food for the whole family. Almost everthing I eat comes from this book. (I am not taking drugs - just diet and exercise.) It has helped me lower my blood sugar 40 points in three months and so far I have not run out of new things to try. Even friends who do not have diabetes have bought the book, just for the reduced fat/low sugar/low salt recipes. It is a hit in my house.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SUGAR

As a Registered Dietitian, for more than 20 years, and Certified Diabetes Educator, for over 10 years, I was so distressed by reviewer comments regarding sugar in the diabetic diet, that I am taking time to respond.
Since 1994 dietitians and educators working with people with diabetes have been trying to get the truth out about sucrose (sugar). Sugar is not a forbidden food for people with diabetes.
Scientific evidence from more than a dozen studies has shown that the use of sugar does impair blood glucose control in people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Sugar and foods containing sugar must be substituted for other carbohydrates, gram for gram, and not simply added to the diabetes meal plan. In making such substitutions, the nutrient content of concentrated sweets and sucrose-containing foods, as well as the presence of other nutrients frequently ingested with sucrose, such as fat, must be considered.
The bottom line for people with diabetes is to check the total carbohydrate in a recipe or on a food label and work that into their diabetes meal plan. Because there are individual variations in blood glucose response, self-monitoring is an important part of diabetes control.

What a downer --Rougher than the Book of Job!

The life of the main character, Delia, goes from believably bad to unbelievably bad; and the bad characters she meets along the way are pretty one-dimensional. The author of Delia's Crossing seems to write with a broad brush. Evil, Super-Evil, and Beneath Contempt, the "bad guys" don't seem to have another side to their nature to make them actually interesting or believable; the reader just has to accept them as flatly disgusting. The good memories Delia has, are of her grandmother back in Mexico. And those memories are equally over the top-- Saint-like. There is a sprinkling of extra characters in the book who are neither too good or evil, but are also of not much consequence to the story nor very interesting. The plot meanders maddeningly, as if new personalities were being tried out on some of the characters. I longed for it to be over. One good thing: I did learn a few Spanish phrases. I otherwise felt that even the folks from Mexico were portrayed in caricature. If I were V.C. Andrew's English teacher I'd suggest she try a re-write; with more character development, and fewer sequenced meaningless tragedies. (We're still getting constant fresh tragedy at every turn on page 387.) Enough already!

great tale of people in crisis

Delia Yebarra is dreaming in school about yesterday's quinceanera celebration when her grandmother bursts into the school and takes her home. She informs the teen that her parents died in an auto accident. Delia leaves her Mexican village to live with her wealthy aunt Isabella in Palm Springs, California. Isabelle married an older rich man. The grieving teenager is shocked that her aunt is taking her in because Isabelle turned her back on her family and village years ago.

When she arrives at her aunt's vast estate, Delia is told she will live in a rundown building and will be a servant until she learns to speak English fluently. Nobody will know they are related, but eventually Delia's cousins Edward and Sophia learn the truth. Edward welcomes her to the family and tries to protect her. However Isabelle and Sophia try to harm her so Delia flees for home with a Mexican fugitive at her side.

If this tale is any indication, V.C. Andrews's new series starring Delia will be a big hit. Delia feels like a fish out of water in the states especially since she does not speak English and thereby unwelcome by her aunt who along with Sophia uses her niece for personal reasons; Delia has no idea how to fight back. Even her relationship with Edward is ruined by her aunt's machinations leaving her isolated as a stranger in a foreign land. This is a great tale of people in crisis learning to cope with the hand fate (and a cruel relative) dealt them.

Can't wait for the next 2 in the series

I will have to say first off, if you haven't read the book you should not be reviewing it. There is no such thing as a review when you've nothing to review.

Now, this book was very well written and well thought out. I will admit there were a few books in the VCA series that I did not like more than others. But I have liked all that I have ever read. I have been reading the VCA since Flowers in the Attic. In fact, I saw the movie with my mother before I ever read the books. That is what brought me to read the books. And I have been an avid fan ever since, always adding new books to my collection whenever I spot them.

This book left me in suspense and wonder. Just as you think you know what is going to happen next, it changes. And the characters are as you would suspect for a VCA book. And the indepth descriptions of the senses (sight, sound, smells) leaves you really feeling as if you were there watching from afar.. able to see everything vividly, hear everything, smell everything. It's wonderful that a writer can write something that makes you feel as if you are truly watching it. It is better than a movie because your imagination can fill in everything for you and nothing is simply forced upon you.

This book is very believable. I can believe that a woman such as Isabella would be like this. I can believe she would simply toss away her heritage like she has. And that she would hinder her own children from knowing their true heritage. I am wondering what is next to come, why she wants to have Delia in her life so badly. Why she is so eager to please her son Edward and give him what he wants in regards to taking care of Delia. I can only wonder what new love interests await for Delia. I recommend it to anyone who has enjoyed eny of the past VCA series.

Great end to the Degrassi: TNG Extra Credit graphic novel series!

Like the other books in this series, this book focuses on two characters, this time Marco and Ashley. Marco is/was one of my favorite characters so I loved that he got his own story in one of the graphic novels! I really love the author's sense of humor, bringing in the running gag through the books of Ashley's really ugly hat from the season finale of season 5. It was darn ugly!

What I liked about the artwork in this installment was how clean it was. Clean and crisp lines create my favorite types of graphic images in graphic novels!

Overall, I really enjoyed reading the Degrassi: TNG graphic novels, now that it's been a few years since these came out and there is a whole new cast of characters I would love to see a some new installments of the graphic novel series!

Fresh from his masterful The Summer of 1787, Stewart takes on one of the seamiest events in American history: the vengeful impeachment of Lincoln's successor as president; the Senate failed to convict Andrew Johnson by a single vote. At issue was the continuation of Lincoln's plans to reintegrate the South into the union after the Civil War. But also at stake, as always, was party politics. Stewart takes readers through a tangled web of motives and maneuverings in lively, unadorned prose. He's skilled at characterizing his large cast of characters and, as a lawyer, has a practiced nose for skullduggery, of which there was much. Corruption deeply marred the entire impeachment effort. Justifiably, Stewart holds his nose about most of the people involved and admires few of them. As he sums it up, in 1868 none of the country's leaders was great, a few were good, all were angry, and far too many were despicable. Stewart offers little analysis and advances no new ideas about what he relates, but he tells the story as well as it's ever been told. B&w photos. (May)

One of our more controversial political figures, Andrew Johnson came closer than any other U.S. President to being removed from office through impeachment. This study by Stewart (Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution), a Washington lawyer who has argued against impeachment in Senate proceedings, examines Johnson's rocky relationship with the post-Civil War radical Republicans. He breaks with those historians who have suggested that Johnson followed what would have been Lincoln's path to reconstruct the South, as he discusses the complex impeachment proceedings against Johnson and the effectiveness of the impeachment process in calming political tensions, if not in removing Presidents from office. Andrew Johnson, Lincoln’s successor in the presidential office, survived his impeachment trial in the Senate by a single vote. Ostensibly, the basis for his impeachment was his violation of the Tenure of Office Act in firing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. In fact, this was the climax of a life-and-death struggle between Johnson and the “Radical Republicans” in Congress. At stake were competing visions of the path of Reconstruction. Johnson, claiming to be following Lincoln’s plan of “letting ’em up easy,” favored rapid reintegration of Southern states with virtually no provisions for protection or advancement of freed slaves. Radical Republicans wanted secessionists treated as traitors and favored promoting economic and political equality of African Americans. Stewart, an attorney, eloquently frames the issues and provides a stirring narrative of this dramatic conflict without heroes. Johnson was a vile man who was racist, alcoholic, and bullheaded. His nemesis, Representative Thaddeus Stevens, was committed to the cause of advancing African Americans, but his commitment bordered on fanaticism, and he was intolerant of any opposing views. The process of impeachment was characterized by hypocrisy and outright bribery. --Jay Freeman

Fascinating Account of Johnson's Impeachment

What would you say if someone were to ask you to come up with one fact about President Andrew Johnson? Many would respond by saying that he was the 17th President of the United States or that Johnson succeeded to the Presidency following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Some might add that Johnson only served one term. I'm sure many of us would recall that President Andrew Johnson was impeached by the House of Representatives but acquitted by one vote by the U.S. Senate. Many of us might also state our belief that the reason Johnson was impeached was that he disagreed with the harsh and vengeful policies of the Radical Republicans and because, following in Lincoln's footsteps, he adopted a compassionate and conciliatory attitude toward the South. The reality, as David O. Stewart amply demonstrates in this book, is quite different. Johnson was a staunch states' rights advocate and didn't see a problem with the former Confederate states doing whatever they wanted now that the Civil War was over. Ex-Confederates were elected to government office and Southern governments imposed Black Codes to deny former slaves their rights. President Johnson also opposed passage of the 14th Amendment.
Some of us may remember having read President John Fitzgerald Kennedy's Profiles in Courage and will recall his account of the courage of Kansas Senator Edmund G. Ross and I quote, "the man who saved a President and who, as a result, may have preserved for ourselves and posterity constitutional government in the United States." Again, David Stewart shows us in this book that the reality is quite different. In a post-Watergate world, we've become all to accustomed to stories of political crime and corruption but I think that anyone who reads Impeached will be shocked at the scale of bribery and patronage in 19th Century American politics. Mr. Stewart restores Thaddeus Stevens to his rightful position in American history and provides a informative discussion of the concept of "high crimes and misdemeanors." Anyone looking for fresh insights into the history of American government and politics will want to read this book.

Great read!

What a good writer David O. Stewart is! This book is absolutely fascinating. Frankly, I never even heard of President Johnson before, and didn't know that any president other than Nixon had ever been impeached. Johnson was vice president when Lincoln was assassinated so he was the president who wound up overseeing reconstruction of the South after the war. He himself had been a southern democrat and was very sympathetic with the southern states. Congress, on the other hand, consisted of representatives from only the northern states, since the southern states had all seceded. So the president and the congress has extremely different views about how to proceed. Stewart is a great historian, also a great legal scholar, and also, to boot, a great story teller. Allin all, a great read.

I look forward each day to this book. Rev. Peter Panagore gets the point across and makes a person think. Anyone has time, Two Minutes a day, to read a page in this book.

My New Daily Ritual

Peter and I were childhood classmates and I had not seen or heard from him for 30 years until we recently reconnected at a high school reunion. Shortly thereafter I received an email from him about his book. About the same time I recived, as a Christmas gift from a good friend, my very first Bible. Not having ever read a single word of the Bible I was a bit intimidated about where to start so I decided to buy Peter's book to see if it would help. As I started reading Peter's stories daily and making them a part of my morning "wake-up" routine, I noticed that I started to feel more positive about how I approached my day. Shortly thereafter I accepted an invitation to join a bible study group with the friend who gave me my first Bible and am noticing even more postive changes in my life. Peter's way of weaving theme's from the Bible into ordinary daily life events, in short easy to read stories, is an incredible gift. You are not overwhelmed with "preaching" from his stories and leave each one feeling compelled to ask yourself how you can integrate the message into your life. I highly recommend Peter's book to anyone looking for a simple way to add more spirituality to your life. It certainly has helped me begin my long overdue relationship with God.

Two Minutes for God

I received this book as a Christmas gift from my only child who has been mentored by Peter Panagore. He, and his book, have had a wonderful influence in our lives. I keep it on the nightstand with the family Bible and I refer to it every day. This is not a collection of Maine stories about "Maine folks", even though I do recognize some stories and know some of the people. However, it is a set of truly inspirational thoughts that transcend religion, class and time and show the common thread of humanity in all of our lives. We all seem to be searching for answers and often we turn to God. I advise you to do so with Peter and his new book. I start my day off watching "Daily Devotions" and having a cup of tea, both of these actions seem to fortify me for the upcoming day. Give it a try!
