In Eileen M. Johnson's "How the Other Half Lives," longtime friends Jamellah and Fernecia are having trouble with the men in their lives. And as their worlds seem to crumble, they must count on their friendship to keep it together.

In "Love Is 2 Blame," by V. Anthony Rivers, Malcolm is devastated after his two-year relationship with Shaylisa ends. And trying to move on will not be easy -- but the lovely Zahara may be the perfect woman to show Malcolm what true love is all about.

In Zane's "Staring Evil in the Face," Robier has everything: a successful career, beautiful children, and the woman of his dreams. Having loved Tiphanie since college, he is determined to keep his marital vows -- until Tiphanie is involved in a horrible car accident that changes the entire course of their lives.

From nervous breakdowns to drug addiction, in Love Is Never Painless, Zane, Johnson, and Rivers have penned powerful stories that not only will have readers talking, but will bring a new perspective to their own relationships.

DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!!!!
By Verna D. Abbott
This book was off the hook!!! I literally finished it in 2 days!! I can't say if it was because I was going through something myself at the time, or if the book was just plain reality that hit me where it hurts...but whatever the case may be, I'm glad I purchased this book because it helped me to get through my own drama. This was one of the best reads I have ever laid hands on. The first novel hits you and it makes you say, "I love myself and I love the people that love me!" Then the second novel hits you and it makes you say, "that's what you get for not giving me the love that I so deeply found and gave to you," But then the third novel hits you and it makes you say, "what the hell have I been thinking and doing all of this time - wake up sista!" Eileen Johnson, V. Anthony Rivers, and Zane...YA'LL PUT IT DOWN!

Three novellas that tackle the darker sides of love
By K. Hinton
Love is Never Painless is a collection of three novellas by African American authors that tackle the darker sides of love. None of these stories has a happy ending, and though they all have unique perspectives on the theme "love is never painless" they each handle it in different ways. These are stories about physical abuse, rape, abandonment, and drug addiction, so don't expect something light-hearted and fun to read. That being said, the collection is solid, the stories are well-written, and they all definitely provide some food for thought. It's nice to see authors tackle something besides the typical love story and it's good to read something that shows the other side of love.

The stories are, in order:

How The Other Half Lives by Eileen M. Johnson

Fernecia and Jamellah are best friends who grew up together in the Third Ward ghetto of New Orleans. They both came from impoverished families and fought their way through hardship to graduate from college and make a name for themselves. Fernecia did so by marrying Fernando, a well-off man who she met through one of Jamellah's boyfriends. Embarrassed by her poor family and overweight body, Fernecia never thought that a man like Fernando could fall in love with her. But he did, and he married her, and together they have a son, Hugs. Still, despite all that she has, Fernecia can't help but feel like she's playing pretend in her big house with her maid and her fancy car. She'll always be the ghetto girl from Third Ward, she just now has to pretend that she isn't. Jamellah took another route. She'd always known that she was beautiful, and she used her looks to her advantage. She even used them to reel in married men who would buy her a house, a car, and help her climb the corporate ladder much more quickly than she could have on her own merit. After years of sleeping with other women's men, Jamellah finally feels like she wants one of her own. When she meets one of Fernando's friends at a fundraiser, she thinks she might have finally found the man of her dreams. But like Fernecia, she'll soon learn that things aren't always what they seem...

How The Other Half Lives was a good way to start off a collection about the darker sides of love that people don't normally talk about. Fernecia and Jamellah both know what it's like to come from the wrong side of the tracks and to lift themselves up from nothing to make something of their lives. However, they both realize that despite having material wealth and living what appears to be the American dream, there is darkness in every life. When they both experience hardship in their relationships and things seem to fall apart, they use their friendship as the backbone to pull it back together again. This story shows that romantic love isn't the only thing that helps people survive hardship, but that friendship plays an important role as well.

Love Is 2 Blame by V. Anthony Rivers

When his girlfriend Shaylisa breaks up with him, Malcolm is heartbroken, distraught, and disenchanted about love. He thought he'd found the one and then that image was shattered by Shaylisa's dismissal. Though his good buddy Jamal keeps trying to make Malcolm jump back on the proverbial horse, Malcolm just isn't ready until he meets the beautiful and charming Zahara. Zahara is a single mother and is forward, open, and honest in a way that Malcolm has never experienced. She doesn't play the mind games that Shaylisa did and she makes it clear from the start that Malcolm is what she's looking for and she wants a relationship not just a good time. Malcolm has to decide if he wants to sit around and wallow in self-pity, hoping that one day Shaylisa will want him back, or if he wants to move forward and begin a future with Zahara.

Love is 2 Blame was my least favorite story in the collection because it felt a little disjointed. For much of the story, Rivers writes from a woman's point of view and, as a woman, I have to say he has no clue what's going on in our heads. In fact, there wasn't a single woman in the whole story who I could identify with or who I even liked. That as a whole, made it difficult to like the story. Still, I can see how it earned its place in this collection. Love is 2 Blame is a story about how you can't just sit around and mope when you've had your heart broken because you never know what you might be missing out on in the interim period.

Staring Evil in the Face by Zane

Starting Evil in the Face is the story of college sweethearts Tiphanie and Robier. Shortly after the birth of their first child, Tiphanie is involved in a horrible car accident that does permanent damage to her back and leaves her addicted to painkillers. Over the years her addiction escalates until it spreads to alcohol, cocaine, and crack. Though Robier tries to be there for the woman he loves, and tries to help her pull her life together, no one can help Tiphanie unless she wants to be helped. After several stints in rehab, and disappearing acts that leave their children wondering where their mother is, Robier has to decide if he wants to help someone who doesn't want to be helped, or if he needs to just cut things off and try to salvage what's left of his own life.

Staring Evil in the Face was, of course, the best story in the collection. It's obviously the most carefully plotted, it's definitely the most wrenchingly emotional, and it's clear from the author's note "A Word from Zane" that the story comes from the heart. This story brings the collection together by helping to show that sometimes things fall apart, but not because the parties don't care, but instead because they care too much. Robier spends years trying to fix his wife, before finally discovering that he can't fix what she doesn't see as broken.

Great as usual
By Rashida Adolemaiu-Bey
This book was excellent. As usual Zane, Eileen M Johnson, V. Anthony Rivers did their thing with this book. The stories told were heartbreaking, soul shaking and very emotional. I would suggest this book to anyone who lives in a fairy tale world when it comes to love. Love is great but it can also be painful. I read this book in two days, only cause I was at work. Can't wait for the next book.

Note by Note: A Celebration of the Piano Lesson, by Tricia Tunstall

In this luminous book, Tricia Tunstall explores the enduring fascination of the piano lesson. Even as everything else about the world of music changes, the piano lesson retains its appeal. Drawing on her own lifelong experience as a student and teacher, Tunstall writes about the mysteries and delights of piano teaching and learning. What is it that happens in a piano lesson to make it such a durable ritual? In a world where music is heard more often on the telephone and in the elevator than in the concert hall, why does the piano lesson still have meaning in the lives of children? What does it matter whether one more child learns to play Bach's Minuet in G?

Note by Note is in part a memoir in which Tunstall recalls her own childhood piano teachers and their influence. As she observes, the piano lesson is unlike the experience of being coached on an athletic team or taught in a classroom, in that it is a one-on-one, personal communication. Physically proximate, mutually concentrating on the transfer of a skill that is often arduous, complicated and frustrating, teacher and student occasionally experience breakthroughs-moments of joy when the student has learned something, mastered a musical passage or expressed a feeling through music. The relationship is not only one-way: teaching the piano is a lifelong endeavor of particular intensity and power.

Anyone who has ever studied the piano-or wanted to-will cherish this gem of a book.

Starred Review. For readers who possess the mildest interest in reading about music or how the mysterious process of learning to play a musical instrument is transferred from teacher to student, this well-composed narrative will be a joy to read. Those so inclined will undoubtedly revel in Tunstall's elegant prose based on her 15 years as a private music teacher. She offers graceful discussions of tonal music, how the pull of pop music has altered the musical environment and why the astonishingly hardy phenomenon of the recital endures in our culture. But for those tempted to dismiss this slim volume because they've never had a music lesson or read a score, this too short memoir offers a rare glimpse into a fascinating world. Tunstall cites her students, the endlessly interesting and varied young people who have sat on my piano bench for six days a week for many years, as the inspiration for the story. She weaves together her insights into the role music plays in the development of self, why teaching kids how to practice is a central preoccupation for piano teachers and what advanced piano students have discovered about themselves. This is a gem that deserves a wide audience. (Apr.)

From a fellow piano teacher
By Jon Hunt
It wasn't long into Tricia Tunstall's new book, "Note by Note", that I found myself nodding again and again in agreement regarding her experiences as a piano teacher, vis-a-vis mine. We are almost exactly the same age, have taught piano for years and came from similar piano backgrounds...that is, classical music only and nothing EVER popular. So it was with good fortune that I could readily identify with her approach, student interaction and all the things that are associated with piano lessons.

By "all the things" I mean that a central point in Tunstall's book is that quite often a piano teacher does more than just teach piano. We are "psychologists" (one mother told me I was cheaper than a shrink), comforters, encouragers, enforcers, and yes, teachers. This is a generational book, I think, and one that can be best appreciated by those around our age (mid-fifties), but certainly not to the exclusion of other generations. Tunstall writes with great narrative style, and with a self-deprecating sense of humor. She covers the essentials of what is to be expected of a student....emergence, mastery, recital, etc. but she offers insight into culture that helps shape her students' (and her own) choice of pieces. The "Lure of Elise" chapter is accurate...every recital seems to have a "Fur Elise" player, and her mild bewilderment of popular music's incursion into traditional teaching mirrors mine. Perhaps we are appendices of the Madame Dmitrieff era...the days when Hanon ruled... but we've learned that jellybeans and The Beatles are often required.

Tunstall does include some musically technical points, but they never get in the way of the story. For the reader who has no knowledge of music in general or piano specifically, don't worry. Reading about poor Pia's "hydraulic lift" approach to pedaling.....a laugh out loud moment... will rescue you from any talk of half steps. It would be nice, however, if Tunstall had offered some of her experiences on how she acquires students, how she sets her rates, what she does with students who don't work out, (all of the students in the book seem to have some degree of success) and does she have any former students who come back to visit her years after lessons are over. But given the parameters of what she is trying to accomplish....the focus on the lesson, itself... it is understandable that she needs to keep things as she has presented them.

The author ends with a poignant chapter, giving us a final and most personal look at her. One can only gather that it would be wise, beneficial and very good to have Ms. Tunstall as your piano teacher. This is a terrific book and I highly recommend it.

Wonderful book
By Amazon Buyer
I just finished reading this book. I thought that it was a wonderful illustration and celebration of the piano lesson. I love how the last chapter introduced a new side of the author, and also introduced us to a more intimate manner of her life. I loved her witty language and cleaver references to pieces I remember fonding playing as a I learned how to play the piano. It was amazing how she was able to only use a sentence or two to explain the magic of some of the pieces referenced in her book and still give readers a good understanding of what makes these pieces amazing. My only concern for potential readers is that some sections of the book require some basic music theory knowledge. You will probably be able to understand what the author intends but the beauty of what Tunstall is trying to convey, I believe is better achieved by musicians. In general, I felt this was a wonderfully written book. It in fact has been one of the only books in my life that I actually felt compiled to read in only three days. Thank you Tricia Tunstall for writing this great book.

Comments by an adult student and parent
By JP Leger
I am fifty-one and about to start my fifth year of piano lessons. I'm slogging in the early - middle intermediate stage. I am also the father of there teenage girls who have studied piano five years, eight years and ten years.
This book covers the entire child (or new adult, like me) piano training process from beginning, age seven, to graduating high school, it lays out all the steps.
So I am highly recommending this book to parents, who are trying to figure out where the lessons are going and where they will lead, and to intermediate adult students, like me, who are trying to figure out how one becomes an advanced student. The advanced students "are in this because of an attraction to the act of playing that is compelling, deep and inarguable." The "difficult passages must be broken down into their smallest part and played over and over and over." So, for me there is no more skimming and going off for a ham sandwich (playing with my laptop) when my Scarlatti is hard.
Sadly, maybe, for parents this desire to master the piano "comes entirely from within". I am not sure my older daughters will ever be advanced, they don't "feel an internal necessity to play".
The book was written to adults (I knew every Beatles song and can't imagine playing a duet of American Pie, front to back), and while I think teenage students would certainly sympathize with the Recital chapter, most of the reflections on learning would probably be lost on them.
Thank you Tricia Tunstall for sharing your life and explaining the process to us, and for telling me to work harder.

Fair Game: How a Top CIA Agent Was Betrayed by Her Own Government, by Valerie Plame Wilson

On July 6, 2003, four months after the United States invaded Iraq, former ambassador Joseph Wilson's now historic op-ed, "What I Didn't Find in Africa," appeared in The New York Times. A week later, conservative pundit Robert Novak revealed in his newspaper column that Ambassador Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame Wilson, was a CIA operative. The public disclosure of that secret information spurred a federal investigation and led to the trial and conviction of Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Scooter Libby, and the Wilsons' civil suit against top officials of the Bush administration. Much has been written about the "Valerie Plame" story, but Valerie herself has been silent, until now. Some of what has been reported about her has been frighteningly accurate, serving as a pungent reminder to the Wilsons that their lives are no longer private. And some has been completely false -- distorted characterizations of Valerie and her husband and their shared integrity.

Valerie Wilson retired from the CIA in January 2006, and now, not only as a citizen but as a wife and mother, the daughter of an Air Force colonel, and the sister of a U.S. marine, she sets the record straight, providing an extraordinary account of her training and experiences, and answers many questions that have been asked about her covert status, her responsibilities, and her life. As readers will see, the CIA still deems much of the detail of Valerie's story to be classified. As a service to readers, an afterword by national security reporter Laura Rozen provides a context for Valerie's own story.

Fair Game is the historic and unvarnished account of the personal and international consequences of speaking truth to power.

Joining the CIA
Our group of five--three men and two women--trekked through an empty tract of wooded land and swamp, known in CIA terms as the "Farm." It was 4 a.m. and we had been on the move all night. Having practiced escape and evasion from an ostensible hostile force--our instructors--we were close to meeting up with our other classmates. Together we would attack the enemy, then board a helicopter to safety. This exercise, called the final assault, was the climax of our paramilitary training. Each of us carried eighty-pound backpacks, filled with essential survival gear: tents, freeze-dried food, tablets to purify drinking water, and 5.56 mm ammunition for our M-16s. The late fall weather was bitter, and slimy water sloshed in our combat boots. A blister on my heel radiated little jabs of stinging pain. My friend Pete, a former Army officer, usually ready with a wisecrack and a smirk, hadn't spoken in hours, while John, our resident beer guzzler, carried not only his backpack but at least fifty extra pounds of body weight. His round face was covered with mud and sweat.

From Publishers Weekly
The problem with this book is that it has been heavily redacted by the CIA—and in parts is almost impossible to read. In order to understand Plame it helps to read journalist Laura Rozen's afterword—basically a straightforward Plame biography—first.

Plame's story is now part of the history of the Iraq War. An undercover CIA agent, she suggested that her husband, former Iraq ambassador and Africa expert Joseph Wilson—at the urging of the vice president's office—be sent to Niger to investigate whether Saddam Hussein tried to obtain yellowcake uranium—one of the Bush administration's apocalyptic talking points for the war. After he wrote an op-ed article in the New York Times called "What I Did Not Find in Africa," Plame was "outed" as a CIA operative by columnist Robert Novak. [She was "fair game" according to Karl Rove, Bush's chief political strategist.] In a drawn out melodrama, special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald rounded up the usual Beltway suspects (Rove, Ari Fleischer, Matt Cooper, Judy Miller etc.) before a grand jury, but eventually Lewis I. (Scooter) Libby, VP Cheney's chief-of-staff, was the only one sentenced in the case for perjury and obstruction of justice (which was soon commuted by Bush).

Plame's personal nightmare began with Bush's 2003 State of the Union address when the president declared "the British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa"—the 16 famous words which directly contradicted Wilson's Niger findings. When Condoleezza Rice denied on Meet the Press that anyone in the White House knew that the Niger pancake uranium stories were untrue, Plame says it was "the last straw" for her husband and he wrote his Times piece.

Although the cast of villains in "Plamegate" is now legendary, a new one emerges in Senator Pat Roberts, Republican of Kansas, and then chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Working closely with Cheney, Roberts did a lot of the White House's political bidding and made life particularly uneasy for the Wilsons by a careful distortion of the facts before the 2004 presidential election.

Kudos go to special prosecutor Fitzgerald ("highly intelligent, compassionate person") and barbs go to Judith Miller of the New York Times ("I distrusted her reporting in articles she had written in the run-up the war"). Plame relates a bizarre chance meeting with Matt Cooper of Time magazine, then under Fitzgerald's screws—who asked Wilson "Could you do something for me?"—to ask the judge for leniency. Plame says the whole First Amendment fight with Miller and Cooper "was the Pentagon Papers or Watergate turned on its head...These reporters were allowing themselves to be exploited by the administration and were obstructing the investigation. It didn't make much ethical sense to me."

Plame also has harsh words for the Washington Post and its editorial writer Fred Hiatt: "I suddenly understood what it must have felt like to live in the Soviet Union and have only the state propaganda entity, Pravda, as the source of news about the world." She continues to batter the press at what came out at the Libby trial, which "showed how eagerly [journalists] accept spoon fed information from official sources...The trial did not show American journalism at its finest hour."

Although Plame guards her personal life with Wilson, she is blunt in acknowledging that the controversy surrounding them put a strain on their marriage, which "seemed balanced on a knife's edge." There was apparently resentment on Wilson's part that his CIA wife could not defend him against some of the attacks: "He deeply resented that I had not adequately come to his defense." When Wilson asked her "Why are you choosing the Agency and your career over your marriage?" it forced her to rethink her marriage and led to a reconciliation. She also reveals the intimate details of her post-partum depression which followed the birth of her twins in 2000.

Plame seems paranoid about events that have happened to her. Was a IRS audit normal or was it triggered by something else? Why did the bolts on a brand new deck suddenly come out? And why did the CIA almost scuttle her book through censorship. [In one of the great ironies of the book, the part about the redactions is heavily redacted.] Plame asks: "Was the White House also responsible for the stalling of my book?"

The book reveals little not already known about Plamegate—although it would have been interesting to see what would have been the result without the massive redactions of the CIA.

Review
"Among the risks faced by men and women who volunteer to serve in our intelligence services are those which derive from American politics. This story shows us how strong the desire to serve can be and how treacherous the risks are in the minefields of Washington. Valerie Wilson volunteered at the height of the cold war. She expected to be betrayed by our enemies, not us." -- Bob Kerrey, Former U.S. Senator and Vice Chairman, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence

"Plame spent a courageous and honorable career on the front lines of terrorism only to come home and meet the ultimate betrayal, her own country -- unethical politicians and unscrupulous journalists. Plame's story is a modern odyssey, a cautionary tale that should make Americans think twice before sacrificing their patriots." -- Lobert Baer, Former CIA Case Officer and the author of See No Evil and Sleeping With The Devil

"Plame had a front-row seat on both the politicization of pre-war intelligence and White House efforts to stem post-invasion criticism....[She] can be viewed as a canary in the proverbial coal mine, and her book reads like a grim testament to the noxious atmosphere of our current politics." -- The Boston Globe

"Fair Game -- which takes its title from Karl Rove's phrase about the legitimacy of blowing Ms. Wilson's professional camouflage -- describes how intense stress wrought havoc on the Wilsons' marriage, not to mention Ms. Wilson's state of mind....[And] she powerfully evokes the disbelief, fury and uncharacteristic terror that came with being outed. " -- The New York Times

"...Plame's own account of her life reveals her as a patriotic true believer in the CIA and its mission. " -- Los Angeles Times

Burn Notice
By EddieLove
While the book certainly makes the case that Plame was a covert operative who was wronged by the administration, I think what makes it most interesting can be appreciated by anyone outside of their political leanings. We get a candid portrait of what it's like in the center of one of these media storms and Plame offers up plenty of detail on the toll this affair took on herself and her marriage. People should be outraged.

The large section of redacted passages are tough to get around -- I wish the material included at the end could have been inserted as footnotes throughout so the reader doesn't have to jump back and forth.

Her story- U.S. Government versus Valerie
By Sweet D
This isn't a spy-intrigue-action book, so please don't expect it to be. It's Valerie Plame Wilson's story about ow she happened to become a CIA agent, what it took to reach the levels in the institution that she did. How the scandal started who was and wasn't involved. She explains how the government managed to touch every part of her being to her personal life, social life, professional life, motherhood, finances, you name it. It's a good book, and one American's should read. Especially approaching this 2008 election.

Interesting, but adds little new to the discussion
By J. A Magill
As is ever the case with books on controversial topics, particular those political, reviews of Mrs. Plame Wilson's book has attracted countless reviews, often from those who one must suspect have not read the book. Indeed, time and again one sees reviews which make assertions patently false such as that Mrs. Wilson was not undercover (the Judge in the Libby case, Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald, and CIA Director General Hayden have all made plain that she was), or that her husband Joseph Wilson was not an ambassador (again, he was, to Gabon). Yet such attempts by individuals to create their own facts has little bearing on what Mrs. Wilson's book offers.

There is little new here in terms of the facts of the case of Robert Novak's "outing" of Mrs. Wilson which could not be found in the court record or a simple Lexus search. This perhaps more than anything makes the frequent redactions (demanded by the CIA and published in the volume as black lines) so patently absurd; time and again matters clearly part of the public record are removed, a penchant for privacy that should give every American citizen pause. That said, Mrs. Wilson writes with gusto and given her silence up until now, one must acknowledge a certain satisfaction in seeing her get her piece.

More than anything this is a highly person memoir, recounting - to the degree the CIA's over busy redactors allowed - her years of service as well as the trauma she and her husband Ambassador Joseph Wilson were forced to endure. While this book offers little new for the record of events, it does give a window into the damage done by those at the eye of the storm. I can only scratch my head in wonder at how many people have continued to sharpen their long knives after Mrs. Wilson's savage treatment.

What is incontrovertible is that Mrs. Wilson, daughter of an Air Force colonel and sister of a marine did render years of loyal service to the defense of the United States, in return for which she has seen her career ended and her reputation smeared, all for political ends in the service of an agenda that was wrongheaded both at the time and in retrospect, all of which brings to mind the iconic words of Joseph Welch: "Have you no sense of decency, sir?" The answer is a tragic no.

On a final note, to avoid confusion readers should begin with Laura Rozen's afterwards to the book which reviews the public record and all of the details that are available, but which the CIA insisted Mrs. Wilson could not write.

Chapter 1: A Friendly Reminder - Rhonda Rhea

Friendships are a must for women. If it weren't for friends, women would have to go to the ladies' room alone. And who would offer a truthful assessment about whether an outfit makes your hips look big?

I have a Mustache Pact with my closest friends. If anyone of us goes into a coma, the others are honor bound by our pact to come and wax the mustache of the comatose friend. We women love to share those special moments.

I shared another special moment with friends recently. Several of us were hurrying to a surprise baby shower. We were hurrying because it's tough to surprise the guest of honor when she gets to the party before the guests.

We had pooled our resources to buy “the stroller to end all strollers.” It was a collapsible stroller that would stroll the baby, carry the baby, swing the baby - maybe even change the baby - I'm not sure. It was Stroller-ama.

I told the others to run in while I got Super Stroller. I jerked it into position and started sprinting. Unfortunately, about middriveway, Stroller-zilla realized I hadn't fully locked it into place (emphasis on the aforementioned collapsible feature). It collapsed neatly into storage mode.

I probably don't need to give you a science lesson on “momentum,” but let me mention I had a lot of it working for me. The fact the Stroller-nator stopped on a dime didn't mean much to my little sprinting body, which was immediately airborne. Maybe you don't know me personally and think me ungraceful. Granted, you probably wouldn't want me to transport subatomic particles on a regular basis, but I don't want you to forever imagine me as a klutz. So maybe it would be better if you could please picture a graceful triple axel jump over the top of the stroller with sort of a one-point landing. I finished it off with a lovely flat-on-the-back pose, staring up at the sky for effect. I'd give it a 6.9.

Thankfully, I had my wonderful friends there to rush over and make sure I was okay. Of course, they couldn't actually ask me if I was all right since those dear friends were laughing so hard they were about to damage some internal organs! One of them couldn't even stay. She made a beeline for the house. You know what can happen to laughing mothers.

That's another thing we love to share: laughter.

This is a little reminder. If it's been awhile since you've made time for friends, take the time and share a laugh with a sister. We need each other. There are certain things, concepts, even certain words, only women understand. “Mauve” and “taupe” are a couple of good examples.

Call up your special bud today. While you have her on the line, you might also want to take care of that coma/mustache thing.

But when a party in the woods turns into an all-out battle with the most ferocious aliens Phoenix has never seen, she's brought home in what appears to be an Onadyn-induced state. Hello, reform school.

Except, what her mother doesn't know is that Phoenix has just been recruited to join the elite Alien Investigation and Removal agency, where she'll learn to fight dirty, track hard, and destroy the enemy. Her professional training will be rigorous and dangerous, and the fact that one of her instructors is Ryan Stone -- the drop-dead gorgeous, nineteen-year-old agent she met in the woods that night -- doesn't make things any easier. Especially when dating him is totally against the rules....

Chapter One

New Chicago

Sometime in the near future...

I'd always loved the night, where anything could happen and everything usually did. The forbidden...the unexpected...the bad. Nothing seemed real in the ethereal light of the moon. Sins were easily forgiven. Why not play? everyone thought -- I had once thought. Why not enjoy?

At the moment, loud, gyrating music pounded through the darkness, vibrating with so much force the ground shook and the trees swayed. In the center of a forest clearing, my friends danced around a blazing fire, and in the flickering gold and shadows their hands were everywhere. Their mouths were kissing hungrily, their bodies moved to the rhythm of the rock, fast and erratic. Sexual.

Those who weren't dancing were lounging against the circling trees, drinking beer, laughing, and smoking Onadyn, or "Snow Angels," as we called the cigs -- the drug of choice for humans nowadays. It was a deoxygenating drug meant only for the aliens who had invaded our planet so many years ago. A deoxygenating drug that made humans, who needed oxygen to survive, feel as if they were soaring through the heavens, untouchable and invincible (if it didn't kill them).

"I should know," I muttered under my breath.

I'd flown for years before being forced into rehab. (Twice) I'd been too wasted to recall the first, but I remembered the second very well, the memory of it burned into my brain.

My mom had picked me up after school one day. Uncaring of her reaction, I'd smoked a Snow Angel just before she arrived. Not enough to pass out, but just enough to fragment my thoughts and emotions, making me loopy, disoriented, and a total pain in the ass.

Nothing could touch me when I was like that. Not anger, not fear, not sadness.

She'd known what I'd done the instant she spotted me -- the glassy eyes and blue lips always gave users away -- yelling in front of the other kids waiting for their parents, "Damn you, Phoenix! Is this how you put your life back together?"

Some of the kids around me snickered; some stared at me with disgust. Still uncaring, I didn't sit up, just continued to lounge on the steps. The sun was shining, bright and warm. Maybe I'd spend the rest of the day here.

"I asked you a question, young lady."

"And I didn't give you an answer," I'd replied with a laugh. "Now hush."

"Hush? Hush! You're ruining your life, you're ruining my life, and you don't even care!" She abandoned the car and stomped to me, scowling down at me. "I'm supposed to go to work, but I can't leave you alone like this. No telling what you'll do."

I laughed again. "You're a waitress. It's not like you make a difference in the world. And you know what else? Whatever I do is my business, not yours."

Hurt washed over her face, but she squared her chin. "Whether I make a difference or not, my job is what pays for your food and your shelter and your clothes." She grabbed my shoulders and shook me. "Your actions become my business when you steal my hard-earned money to buy the very drugs that are killing you. Your actions become my business when you run away to God knows where and I don't see you for days."

"Just, I don't know, shut up and go away or something. You're ruining my buzz." Dizzy, I tried to push her hands away but didn't have the strength. That, too, made me laugh.

She didn't reply for several strangled seconds, just stared at me as if I were a bottle of poison and she'd just digested the entire contents. Other parents had arrived, I realized, and watched us unabashedly.

My mom realized it, too, and wheeled around to face them. "What are you staring at?" she snapped. "Get your kids and go home."

"Your daughter is seriously disturbed," someone muttered.

"She's a menace," someone else, a man, said. "And if she ever comes near my child, I'll call the cops and have her locked away."

"Don't worry, Daddy," one of the more popular girls at the school said in a snotty voice. I couldn't recall her name, but I knew she was a straight-A student, an all-around goody-goody, and someone I despised because she always seemed so put together, as if the world were her own personal treasure chest. "I'd rather kill myself than go near her."

I pushed to my feet, wobbling as another wave of dizziness struck. I meant to approach her, realized I'd fall, so remained in place, saying instead, "You can fuck the hell off." With that, I gave her and her dad a double-birded salute. "Feel free to kill yourself like you promised. Or maybe call me and I'll come over and do it for you."

There was a gasp. An enraged snarl.

My mom dragged me into the car after that. I hadn't cared at the time, but she'd cried the entire way home and shipped me to rehab that very evening.

Once I'd sobered up, the memory had embarrassed and shamed me. Still did. I'd made my own mother feel worthless, and I'd laughed about it.

I didn't want to be that uncaring girl ever again. I kept thinking, What if, next time I use, I do something worse? What if, next time, I couldn't be forgiven -- by my mom or myself? I mean, a guy I met in rehab had later killed himself because he'd been humiliated by the things he'd done to support his habit.

I hadn't reached that point. And I won't.

I refused to fly anymore. Which was hard, now that I was back in school and surrounded by friends who flew every weekend. Harder still as I stood in that ethereal moonlight, the world around me beckoning with promises of numbness and invincibility.

Those promises had always been my downfall.

I just, I didn't fit in with the other kids at school. They saw me as the goody-goody had. Worthless, untrustworthy. Tainted. These were the only kids that accepted and understood me, so I didn't want to leave them.

Stay strong, Phoenix. Stay strong. As I sipped my beer, I leaned against the jagged bark of a tree. I'd arrived only a few minutes ago, parked in front of an abandoned warehouse like everyone else, and trekked through the forest. Late. As always. I had debated coming at all.

Now, as I studied the scene in front of me, I realized I shouldn't have come, no matter how much I missed my friends. No matter how alone I felt.

No matter how determined I thought my resolve to remain sober.

Plumes of white smoke wafted, like mist, almost like ghosts, enveloping the kids who were puffing Snow Angels. I bit my bottom lip. Oh, the temptation...months ago I would have joined them without thought. Would have inhaled the sweet, after-rain scent of the drug and soared through the stars.

A painful need to do just that washed through me. In seconds I could be giddy, invincible. Fly...fly...I could forget the way my dad had walked out on me and my mom two years ago; I could forget my mom's constant disappointment in me. I could even forget the little stresses of the day, where it didn't matter who liked me and who didn't.

"Phoenix!" a familiar voice called happily. "Thank God. You came, you sexy bitch."

I glanced to my left, following the direction of the words. My friend, Jamie Welsh, was approaching, her black curls bouncing on her shoulders. She smiled, her expression as happy as her tone. The firelight flickered over her heavily painted face and illuminated her black syn-leather dress and knee-high boots.

"I couldn't stay away," I admitted.

Jamie threw her arm around my shoulders and clinked our beers together. "You left Chateau Insano two weeks ago, but this is the first I've seen you outside of class. What's that about?"

Chateau Insano. Our name for rehab. It fit. I had gone crazy for a while, hitting the walls, screaming, destroying any piece of furniture -- or person -- I could get my hands on, all in an attempt to fight my way free.

"My mom's become my warden," I said, the words dripping with self-deprecation. "I spend most of my time at home now."

"Poor baby," she said, sympathetic. "Thank God you escaped tonight, though." She drained the rest of her beer and tossed the glass onto the ground. "It's gonna get freaky!"

I tapped my foot to the beat of the music, trying to cut off a groan. "Something going down?"

"Just the usual. You know, all the things our parents hate. As if they didn't do the same things when they were young."

I couldn't picture my mom doing anything wild, not now, not ever. She was so...starched. Not just her appearance: unwrinkled clothing and pale, slicked-back hair. But her personality. If she wasn't working, she was cleaning the house, not giving a single speck of dust time to settle. She never drank, never seemed to have a moment of relaxation.

Pacing, worrying, those were her favorite pastimes. Because of me, I thought, a little sad.

"Hey," Jamie said, drawing my attention. "You're all stiff. You, like, need to lighten up. Have you seen Allison Stone's brother? That'll help you for sure."

"No." I hadn't even known Allison had a brother. In fact, I'd thought Allison had moved away a year ago. "Allison's here?"

"Yeah, but forget Allison. Allison Smallison, we want to talk about her brother. He graduated a few years ago, before you moved here, then joined the military. The few, the proud, or some other shit," she said, rolling her eyes. "I don't think you two ever met."

"We didn't."

"You'll hate yourself for that when you see him." As she spoke, Jamie withdrew a small, plastic vial from the hidden, zippered pouch on the side of her boot. Druggies always had ways to hide their stash. "I've kept an eye out for him all these years, but he rarely comes home. Until now," she added with a wicked smile. "He's finally here."

I almost groaned again when I spotted the vial. Onadyn, or "Breathless," the liquid form of the drug. Stronger than powder, more potent than pills. Ten thousand times better than Snow Angels. You didn't just fly to the stars with Breathless, you became one.

For a little while, at least, I reminded myself, but I was unable to tear my gaze from the vial. My hand shook with the desire to reach out and snatch it. I could drain it before Jamie even realized ...

A teen element to the Alien Huntress series
By Amazon Customer
Phoenix is nearly 18 and has had a problem with addiction to the drug Onadyn for several years, including 2 stints to rehab, to the despair of her mother. She's trying to get her act together and make her mother proud; unfortunately, events conspire to make it appear that she's using her drug of choice again... and thus begins a new chapter in her life.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. We get to see how A.I.R. (Alien Investigation and Retrieval) agents are recruited and trained, and what that entails. A few characters from the adult Alien Huntress series make an appearance as well (I won't spoil it for you). In many ways, it also reminds me of Holly Black's book Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie, book 2 in the series, which also deals with teenage alienation in a paranormal world.

This book is a great addition to the Alien Huntress repertoire; my one "beef" is the issue of Phoenix's father (again, I won't reveal too much) - the events and rationale surrounding him and his actions are never made clear, which was a bit frustrating because they were/are the impetus that drives Phoenix.

Blacklisted is the sequel to Red Handed, and, thankfully, releasing on the tail of the first book.

Fun story with engaging characters, awesome writing, and tons of action
By Dark Faerie Tales
Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales

Quick & Dirty: Fun story with engaging characters, awesome writing, and tons of action. I would highly recommend this to any YA sci-fi fans that love aliens!

Opening Sentence: I’d always loved the night, where anything could happen and everything usually did.

The Review:

Phoenix Germaine has a serious drug problem with Onadyn. It is a drug that was designed to help aliens deal with our oxygen levels, for humans it will give you the most amazing high. It is very addictive and once you start using it is almost impossible to stop. Phoenix has been to rehab twice and this time she is determined to stay clean. But one night she decides to go out with her friends to a party, and things go terribly wrong when a bunch of hostile aliens show up. Phoenix ends up being taken home and it looks like she is high as a kite. Her mother decides to send her to reform school because she just doesn’t know what else to do.

But it turns out the Phoenix has actually been recruited to join A.I.R., a secret agency that hunts down dangerous aliens and protects humans from them. Aliens have been a part of the world for a long time now and most people think that they are completely harmless, but A.I.R. knows better. Most aliens do live on earth peacefully and the government wants the general public to ignore any of the dangerous ones so they don’t cause problems with the peaceful aliens. At the school Phoenix will be taught how to fight, track, and eliminate any threat from aliens. She has finally found where she belongs, but this school has very strict rules and if you break any of them you will be kicked out. This isn’t a problem until Phoenix realizes that one of her instructors is the gorgeous Ryan Stone, one of the guys that helped rescue her friends in the woods, and student/instructor relationships is very much against the rules.

Phoenix was a great heroine that I liked instantly! She was feisty, smart and determined. I loved that she has a rough past and has made some really bad decisions, it made her feel more human. She has owned up to her mistakes and is doing everything in her power to change herself. I respect her for being so strong when it came to her addiction and making something of herself. She has a fun spunky attitude and is one of those people that always has a comeback. She was so easy to like and I am glad I got to read her story.

Ryan was a sexy love interest, but I felt that I didn’t really get to know him very well. He’s not in the book a whole lot and the few moments where he is you don’t really get to learn about him. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t like him because I did, he was interesting and drop dead gorgeous so what’s not to like. His relationship with Phoenix was full of great sexual tension and they had awesome chemistry. I wish I would have been able to know more about his background just so I could have connected with him better, but he was still a very fun character.

Red Handed was a very quick read full of action, romance, and fun characters. It is one of those books that you pick up and just fly right through it. I wouldn’t say that there was a ton of substance to the story but it was still very entertaining. While I did enjoy the romance it did have a slightly instalove feel to it, and I wish it would have been a little more developed. I am actually fairly new to Showalter’s works but everything I have read by her so far has been fantastic. I love her writing, it is quirky, creative, sexy, and just fun. This is a YA spinoff of Showalter’s adult Alien Huntress series, but this can be read completely separate. I personally haven’t read the adult series but I know that some of the same characters appear in the story, so if you were a fan of Alien Huntress series I would recommend you give this one a try. Also, if you are just a YA sci-fi fan and are looking for a great read you should check this one out.

Notable Scene:

I was once again alone with Ryan—who I wasn’t sure I liked. He was too bossy, too arrogant, too everything. But I knew I liked to look at him. He was a (sexy) mystery, a (beautiful) confusing puzzle.

“What’s your name?” he asked me. His blue eyes were swirling, churning. Like an ocean tempest.

“Phoenix.”

“Cute,” he said.

“You wouldn’t think so if it was your name,” I grumbled.

His lips twitched into a smile. (I was talking about you, not the name. But I like that, too.”

FTC Advisory: MTV Books/Simon & Schuster provided me with a copy of Red Handed. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

I liked this a lot better than Showalter's adult Alien Huntress series
By Karissa Eckert
I liked the first couple books in Showalter's Alien Huntress series, but didn't like the last few. So, I had mixed feelings about reading the Teen Alien Huntress series. Luckily this was a pretty darn good book. It is not high literature, but is fun to read and full of action.

Phoenix has been through rehab twice already and is trying to kick her addiction to Onadyn for good. Still she needs to see her friends sometimes, so she sneaks out to a party to meet up with them. There she meets the super hot Ryan who warns her to leave because some Outers are coming to attack the party. Phoenix doesn't listen (she has a real attitude problem) and instead hangs around. When the party is attacked by Sybilins (water sucking aliens, that will literally suck you dry) Phoenix stays and fights instead of leaving like she was told. Afterwards Ryan knocks her out and returns her home. Phoenix's mom thinks she's been using again and this time it is the last straw. Phoenix's mom signs her up to go to a new "hard-love" rehab school. Only the school isn't what it seems to be and Phoenix is learning about *way* more than how to kick her habit.

This was a fun read and action packed. The characters aren't the greatest ever created, but they are somewhat interesting and engaging. The world Showalter has created with multiple human races isn't gone into in any great depth, but promises to be interesting. For those who have read the adult Alien Huntress series (definitely not appropriate for younger readers because of being so heavy on the sex) you will recognize many of the teachers at the school; Mia is there as well as Le'Ace. I actually liked this book a lot better than the Adult Alien Huntress series, maybe because more page space is given to action and plot.

While Phoenix is definitely not a role-model for young adults, she does grow throughout the book and starts to become someone readers can admire as the plot progresses. The action scenes are well-written. For those who have read Vampire Academy and are intrigued by the teacher-student relationship between Rose and Dimitri, you will find something similar in this book. Ryan and Phoenix really hit it off, but as Ryan is one of Phoenix's teachers their relationship is (of course) forbidden. This adds some nice tension to the story.

Much of the story is spent with Phoenix learning her new skills and learning about Otherworlders. The story is engaging and a fast, fun read. I am looking forward to reading "Blacklisted" the second Teen Alien Huntress book.

misjudged the cover, thus the intended audience.
By Colleen R. Brown
I know I'm a simpleton for not researching this more before buying: I just looked at the cover (camel, little soldier man etc.) and read the blurb and thought it'd be good for my 9-14 year olds, and my ADD husband. I was expecting bullet points, and it's much wordier than that, w/some topics lasting 2+ pages of SMALL type. Interesting, but not the kind of "take a quick look and learn" bathroom book I was hoping for.

What a fun book to have the bath. It has humor along with facts and texts to back up the info. Can't wait to re-read it.
