By the author of Dare Me and The End of Everything

A young woman hired to keep the books at a down-at-the-heels nightclub is taken under the wing of the infamous Gloria Denton, a mob luminary who reigned during the Golden Era of Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano. Notoriously cunning and ruthless, Gloria shows her eager young protégée the ropes, ushering her into a glittering demimonde of late-night casinos, racetracks, betting parlors, inside heists, and big, big money. Suddenly, the world is at her feet—as long as she doesn't take any chances, like falling for the wrong guy. As the roulette wheel turns, both mentor and protégée scramble to stay one step ahead of their bosses and each other.

From Publishers Weekly
Edgar-finalist Abbott (Die a Little) delivers a sharp, slender, hardboiled tale of a protégé's schooling by a notorious, been-there-done-that moll. The first time the unnamed 22-year-old female narrator lays eyes on Gloria Denton, her first thought is I want the legs. The setting is the Club Tee Hee, an indeterminate Las Vegas–L.A. nowhere where the kid is doing the mobbed-up books, and Gloria comes in every few weeks to count Jerome's vig. The kid absorbs very entertaining lessons in how to dress, move, behave, and how to pick up, transport and distribute payoffs and winnings—until she falls for sweet-talking gambler Vic Riordan. Abbott is pitch-perfect throughout: Gloria Denton, still turning heads in her 40s, is as hard a moll as any, and the kid is a beautiful combination of foil and tool as she strives to emulate her role model. The collision, violent and inevitable, rips away the facade of glitz and glamour, and leaves their low-end edifice starkly exposed.

From Booklist
Working from her story in the anthology Damn Near Dead (2006), noir's reigning crown princess delivers a royally entertaining rumination on toxic female friendships set in the harsh neon underbelly of early-1960s Las Vegas. The tale of an avaricious assistant to a Virginia Hill-style Mob courier unfolds so cinematically it's difficult not to picture it onscreen--perhaps pitched as The Grifters meets Casino, with Sharon Stone and Scarlett Johansson under the leering direction of Quentin Tarantino. "Gloria's girl," they call her when she's corralling payoffs from casino managers, fixing odds at the track, and doling out pad money to the cops. But she's out for a glorious score, and the taste of a gem heist she sets up only makes her ravenous for more. It's too bad that head for nasty business is paired with a body built for even nastier sin--and a heart foolish enough to go out to Vic Riordan, a self-destructive gambler nearing his final spin of the wheel. It'd be nice to get a better glimpse of her motivations, but this is a sleek, slick, seductive treat. Frank Sennett

Review
"Quite a stunning achievement. With Queenpin, her third superb book, Megan Abbott proves beyond all doubt she is the new Queen of Noir."
-- Ken Bruen, author of Priest and American Skin

"Subtle, seductive, stunningly violent, this perfectly executed hardboiled title of complex relationships between grifters is a stone-cold classic."
-- Allan Guthrie, author of Hard Man and Kiss Her Goodbye

"Megan Abbott continues to be my absolute favorite new author."
-- Lisa Scottoline, author of Dirty Blonde

"Classy, daring, and alluringly amoral, Abbott's portrayal of a woman desperate for the "good life" illuminates the deep motives of a femme fatale, as she chooses tough over soft and pleasure within pain in order to satisfy her thrill-seeking personality in an era when opportunities are scarce. A slick, murderous adventure with passion enough to draw any reader inside."
-- Vicki Hendricks, author of Cruel Poetry

Superb revival of a gritty genre
By Paige Ellen
I've read all three of Ms Abbott's novels now. She is a quick read and will not strain your brain. However, her recollection of the time about which she writes is a delight. She also writes in a manner tough enough to invoke early Spillane and his peers (if he has any). The switch to dangerous females in lead roles is also quite fun. I read a lot of modern mystery writers, i.e. Fairstein, Scottoline, Barr, Henry, Stabenow, Graves, etc and Megan Abbott's perspective is refreshing. Her writing is crisp and moves along very nicely and easily holds the reader's attention. Give her a try; you won't regret it. Just remember, if you are looking for complex plot structure and deep detailed character development, go elsewhere. This is about scheming and action. Delightful to read.

Fabulous Noir
By Gayle
Die A Little is still my favorite, but this book is a sleek dark rocket. I could not put it down. When my husband read Die A Little, he said he loved it, and would read anything else Megan Abbott wrote, but that he wished James M. Cain had done a pass over it. He got his wish in this book. Lean and mean, but still displaying Abbott's own poetic voice, Queenpin is a knockout noir, taut and twisted, neon surface glitter hiding subterranean depths.

Better and better with every book
By Jeff
Ms. Abbott's novels have progressively become faster paced and more darkly plotted. Although short of the break necked pace of a later James Ellroy work, Queenpin moves with flash and verve through a world of shadowy characters. Another reviewer has commented accurately that there is solid thinking behind her plots in every book and there is no exception to that observation here.

What is unique is the concept of a 'Queen-pin' as opposed to a 'Kingpin.' Although the Queenpin initially is drawn as a caricature, we learn more about her history as the plot advances. Although she never becomes a full person, she is real enough for the purposes of the book.

Especially interesting is Abbott's portrayal of the power of sex in this book. Seen here, sexual need is indistinguishable from the lure of hard drugs to an addict. More uniquely, the women crave it more than the men. This makes for striking juxtapositions compared to a conventional noir novel.

Abbott's ability to describe violence has also progressed. Despite the title of her first book, it was not that violent. The violence in 'The Song is You' was more often implied than described in detail. Queenpin throws any squeamishness over its shoulders, yielding nothing to her male noir peers.

You can read her works in any order, as the stories are not at all interconnected. However, I'd suggest reading in chronological order. It reminds me of a fast forward video clip of a beautiful floor blossoming. We can only hope she is working on her fourth novel now.

Swan Peak (Dave Robicheaux, No. 17), by James Lee Burke

James Lee Burke’s beloved Louisiana lawman Dave Robicheaux returns—this time, traveling from New Iberia Parish to the wilds of Montana in this adventure-filled sequel to Black Cherry Blues.

Dave Robicheaux, his wife, and his buddy Clete Purcell have retreated to an old friend’s ranch, hoping to spend their days fishing and enjoying their distance from the harsh, gritty landscape of Louisiana post-Katrina. But the serenity is soon shattered when two college students are found brutally murdered in the hills behind where the Robicheauxs and Purcell are staying. They quickly find themselves involved in a twisted and dangerous mystery involving a wealthy, vicious oil tycoon, his deformed brother and beautiful wife, a sexually deviant minister, an escaped con and former country music star, and a vigilante Texas gunbull out for blood. At the center of the storm is Clete, who cannot shake the feeling that he is being haunted by the ghosts from his past—namely Sally Dio, the mob boss he’d sabotaged and killed years before.

Deftly weaving intricate, engaging plotlines and original, compelling characters with his graceful prose, Burke transcends genre yet again in the latest thrilling addition to his New York Times bestselling series.

Detective Dave Robicheaux is pitted against all types, from an oil tycoon's deformed brother to a sexually indiscreet minister. With these colorful characters running rampant, narrator Will Patton never stumbles in his delivery or interpretations, offering realistic, entertaining characters who are sure to engage listeners right from the start. Patton's voice is perfectly suited for Burke's rough and tumble tale, his gritty Southern dialect sets the tone for this brooding murder mystery. A Simon & Schuster hardcover (Reviews, May 19). From Bookmarks Magazine
Although Dave Robicheaux has (temporarily) left his beloved New Orleans, fans will not be disappointed in this fast-moving, taut, and riveting thriller. Critics noted James Lee Burke’s somewhat lighter tone and brighter mood since his last novel, The Tin Roof Blowdown (2006), a furious reaction to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, though the Miami Herald felt that Swan Peak didn’t measure up to the former novel’s ferocity and immediacy. Burke’s lyrical language and eye for detail are well suited to the rugged physical beauty of Montana, and his characters spring to life as he deftly juggles several different plotlines. Despite a glut of violence and some potentially confusing narrative shifts, Robicheaux’s followers are in for a “deeply terrifying ride” (Oregonian).

From Booklist
There are no vacations for Dave Robicheaux, whether he’s at home in New Iberia, Louisiana, or fishing in Montana, where he ventures in the latest installment of Burke’s long-running and justly celebrated series. Ever searching for some semblance of his pastoral youth in Cajun country, Robicheaux embarks for Montana as a way of temporarily escaping Katrina- and crime-ravaged south Louisiana, but the evils of modernity—and the tempests raging within his own violence-prone psyche—follow him even to the trout streams and mountain splendors of the Rockies. Of course, it doesn’t help when your longtime and even-more-violence-prone running mate, Clete Purcell, is along for the ride and stirring up long-simmering resentments relating to his and Dave’s last trip to Montana (Black Cherry Blues, 1989). Naturally, there are some very bent, very bad rich guys lurking around the bend, and inevitably, a confluence of events brings the Bobbsey Twins (as Robicheaux and Purcell were known in their days as New Orleans cops) into the line of fire. This time, though, the focus is more on Purcell and on a rich subplot involving a country musician and a prison guard than it is on Dave himself. Longtime Burke readers will find much that is familiar—even sometimes overly familiar—here, but Burke (who lives part-time in Montana) settles in comfortably to his setting, using his signature style to evoke a new landscape and doing considerably more with his supporting cast than is typical of the series. No fan of hard-boiled crime fiction can help but feel the pulse quicken when a new Robicheaux appears. --Bill Ott

Evil, Dark and Masterful...
By Cynthia K. Robertson
Swan Peak by James Lee Burke is the 16th book in his Dave Robicheaux series, and this novel is dark, evil and wonderfully written.

Detective Dave Robicheaux hails from New Iberia, Louisiana. He's spending the summer in Montana with his wife Molly, and best friend Clete Purcell. Robicheaux plans on spending his days fishing and enjoying the Bitterroots. Events conspire against him, and as usual with Dave and Clete, trouble seems to follow them where ever they go.
Two college co-eds are brutally murdered, and one is found near where Robicheaux is staying. Two tourists are also found murdered at a rest stop. Robicheaux feels that the Wellstone brothers, Ridley and Leslie are somehow behind the evil things happening in this small town of Missoula. The Wellstones made their money in Texas, and are now operating a local ministry. Leslie Wellstone, a monster of a man with burn scars all over his face, is married to the pretty country singer, Jamie Sue Stapleton. At the same time, Jamie Sue's true love, Jimmy Dale Greenwood, escapes from a Texas jail after being brutalized by a jail gunbull, Troyce Nix. Nix knows that Greenwod will try to find Jamie Sue and follows Greenwood to Montana. And as if this isn't enough darkness going on, Purcell and Robicheaux are both dealing with demons caused by their childhoods, their Viet Nam experiences and in Robicheaux's case, his battle to stay sober. How these people all converge in this small town and the end results are as surprising as they are masterful.

In terms of writing, James Lee Burke it not just a mystery writer, but an author who writes mysteries. His books are written in a style that can be found in good literature. In fact, in addition to two different mystery series, Burke is the author of eight novels. When Clete became frustrated with the happenings in Missoula, "He closed his cell phone and flipped it over his shoulder onto the bed. If ever reincarnated, he vowed, he would live in a stone hut on top of a mountain in Tibet, thousands of miles away from people whose lives were modeled on the lyrics of country-and-western songs."

James Lee Burke has been publishing a new Robicheaux every July, and it's one of the things I most look forward to during the summer.

Too heavy on the Southern Gothic musings this time around
By Brian Baker
I've been a fan of Burke and Robicheaux from the jump, and part of the the draw is the stylistic approach Burke uses to flesh out his characters and settings.

In this novel, the setting is changed to Montana, where Robicheaux and his wife, accompanied by long-time buddy Clete Purcell, find themselves once again embroiled in murder, mayhem, and twisted familial psychopathy, this time revolving around the Wellstone family, a duo of physically and emotionally crippled brothers who are power brokers in the small area around Swan Peak; as well as the wife of one of the brothers, who brings her own checkered past into the equation.

There are other players in the story, leading to a complex brew: the former prison guard with a background of sexual perversity pursuing the escapee who shanked him and left him for dead; the aimlessly wandering woman who captures his heart; various thugs who work for the Wellstones; a religious charlatan; innocent kids trying to follow their faith who end up as victims.

These characters are all on courses that lead to intersection in the rugged Montana scenery, and Burke plots it very well.

Unfortunately, this time around the story bogs down in the endless and repetitive musings about each of the characters' pasts, as well as Robicheaux's history and demons.

In previous books, we've always had this aspect to the stories, and it's been handled deftly and creatively, adding to the depth of the characterizations and atmospheres of the tales. This time, I think Burke's gone overboard, and it really needlessly slows things down. Some of the charcters have overlapping or similar backgrounds, so the musings in these cases become repetitive. Others deal with similar demons -- most obviously Clete and Robicheaux -- so again there's a great deal of repetition.

There's one other aspect that's starting to become very obvious and problematic for the Robicheaux character: his age. In his musings, we read about his background in the Vietnam War, and times he spent with his Dad "in the 1940s" when he was growing up.

Well... I spent those kinds of times with MY Dad in the 1950s, and am also a Vietnam veteran, and my next birthday is my 60th. Which means Robicheaux has to be nearing 70. It's getting pretty hard to believe a character that old can be carrying on the way Robicheax and Purcell do.

Anyway, it was still an enjoyable read, if not quite up to Burke's earlier works, so I give it 3.5 stars.

Swan Peak is a "pseudo-sequel" to Black Cherry Blues, the Edgar Award-winning third Dave Robicheaux novel. Like that previous book, it takes place in Montana, where Robicheaux, his wife Molly and longtime friend Clete Purcel go for a fishing trip partly meant to help them escape the devastation of Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina (which was powerfully and sadly evoked in The Tin Roof Blowdown.) The fishing party are the guests of Albert Hollister, one of wealthy oil man Ridley Wellstone's many enemies, with whom Dave and Clete must soon contend after inadvertantly trespassing on his property. After being warned away by two thugs Clete is recognized by one of the men - a former associate of Mob Boss Sally Dio - as the man who engineered Dio's demise in a Montana plane crash (see Black Cherry Blues.) Things get more complicated when two college students are found murdered near Hollister's land; the emnity between Hollister and Wellstone makes the oil tycoon a possible suspect and Dave is recruited by the local authorities to help with the investigation. Meanwhile Clete becomes dangerously infatuated with Wellstone's sister-in-law, a beautiful country singer who's being stalked by a former lover who is himself on the run; he escaped from a Texas prison after nearly killing a brutally violent guard named Troyce Nix. When Nix comes to Montana in pursuit, Robicheaux first sees him at a revival meeting put on by the shady Rev. Sonny Click (who may have Wellstone connections) and immediately pegs him as a menace despite being unaware of the ex-military man's disgraceful involvement at Abu Graib. All of this might sound confusing here, but Burke combines his intertwining storylines so smoothly that it's easy to appreciate his masterfully graceful prose, as well as his poetic eye for detail in both landscape and character. Nobody writes crime novels like James Lee Burke, and Swan Peak shows he is at the peak of his considerable powers.
Also recommended: A Stranger Lies There - winner of the Malice Domestic Award for best first mystery, it features a vividly rendered desert backdrop that should please fans of James Lee Burke's colorful Montana and Louisiana settings.

Obsidian Alliances (Star Trek Mirror Universe, Bk. II), by Peter David, Keith R. A. DeCandido, Sarah Shaw

Some say the line between good and evil is narrower than we imagine -- a divide as subtle as a mirror, and perhaps just as deep. To peer into its black, reflective glass is to know the dark potential we each possess, and we cross that obsidian boundary at our peril . . . into a world where we no longer recognize who we are or what we believed ourselves capable of.

In the late twenty-fourth century, decades after the fall of the once-mighty Terran Empire, the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance dominates the worlds that, in another reality, made up the United Federation of Planets. Humanity and its former subject races are now bound together by their shared oppression, slaves to their cruel and brutal conquerors. But a downtrodden few have found the courage and the strength of will to act. Inspired by visitors from another continuum to fight for their freedom, they have rekindled hope . . . and rediscovered an ancient truth: that every revolution begins with a vision.

Star Trek: VOYAGER ® A rebel ship commanded by a former slave named Chakotay attempts to evade pursuit in the Badlands . . . only to encounter a strange ship that was catapulted seventy thousand light-years across the galaxy. On board the craft are two aliens, one of whom has the potential to completely alter the balance of power within the Alliance. But as both sides of the struggle race to get to the stranger first, treachery throws all schemes into a tailspin.

Star Trek: NEW FRONTIER ® Following the Terran Empire's collapse, its longtime rival, the Romulan Star Empire, has absorbed many of the fringe civilizations spread across that part of the galaxy. One of the Romulans' slaves is M'k'nzy of Calhoun, a savage and unpredictable Xenexian who dreams of death . . . and who learns the value of freedom from the unlikeliest of teachers, a Romulan named Soleta.

Star Trek: DEEP SPACE NINE ® One fallen dictator's struggle to regain her power and her position leads to the discovery of a bold rebel plan for a decisive military strike against the Alliance. But while Kira Nerys navigates the dangerous road of politics, sex, and military intrigue that she believes will lead her back to reclaiming the Intendancy, cracks form in the rebel leadership, leading to a showdown that will change the course of the Mirror Universe.

Wonderful!
By TJAMES03
I love this book. It is GREAT sequel (I have always wanted to see the mirror universe Kes). A lot of people are under the false impression that all of the characters in the mirror universe have to be complete opposites of those in our `normal' Trek universe. Wrong. That would be too simple. Some are completely different, and others are only minutely (example: in the mirror universe chapters of "Glass Empires", the Borg are still what they are in our universe, but there are a few differences - Borg King, diamond-shaped ship instead of a cube).

I know that there is going to be confusion for some because of Peter David's "New Frontier" chapters, but if you are confused, go out and read the previous books of "NF". They are some of the best ever Trek-themed novels.

As far as this timeline not following the "Dark passions" reality, no problem. As the TNG episode "Parallels" showed us, there are infinite realties out there. It is up to the reader to decide what they consider `canon' in their reality.

Another thing that I liked about the books is the fact that (even the sadistic characters) have a reason for doing what they do (like with the traitor in the VOYAGER chapters - when you read why they did it, it almost makes you agree with them!).

Also, the mirror universe, some counterparts are much more interesting than those in the regular Trek universe (example being that of the mirror universe Leeta. In the mirror universe, Leeta is not just a dumb Dabo girl, but a fighter and a very intelligent person).

I really hope that we will see a sequel to these great books!

Enjoyable, Well-Conceived "Star Trek" Fiction
By John Kwok
Just for fun I borrowed this book recently from my local public library, and found a rather delightful surprise with respect to "Star Trek" fiction. While readers will not be surprised with the talents of Keith R. A. DeCandido, and especially, Peter David (whose alternative Romulan Star Empire tale worked well on several different levels), they will be amazed with the ample detail and convincing depictions wrought by first-time author Sarah Shaw in her brilliant visit to the alternate "Deep Space Nine" commanded by Terran Rebellion leader General Miles "Smiley" O'Brien. All three authors do a fine job in depicting the Mirror Universe as seen from the prisms of "Star Trek: Voyager" (DeCandido), "Star Trek: New Frontier" (David) and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (Shaw). While I'm not going to spoil the fun by revealing plot details to you, I will say that there is ample shipboard intrigue and excitement in store in all three novellas. Moreover, I would say that these are among the finer examples of "Star Trek" short fiction which I've come across. Long-time fans of "Star Trek" will not be disappointed, and most certainly will want to add this volume to their collections.

FANTASTIC
By FRANTA
This was better than the first in the Mirror Series.

Partially because I love the DS9 and New Frontiers Characters but doubly so as I do not care for the Voyager crew and loved that story as well!

Driven West: Andrew Jackson and the Trail of Tears to the Civil War, by A. J. Langguth

By the acclaimed author of the classic Patriots and Union 1812, this major work of narrative history portrays four of the most turbulent decades in the growth of the American nation.

After the War of 1812, President Andrew Jackson and his successors led the country to its manifest destiny across the continent. But that expansion unleashed new regional hostilities that led inexorably to Civil War. The earliest victims were the Cherokees and other tribes of the southeast who had lived and prospered for centuries on land that became Alabama, Mississippi, and Georgia.

Jackson, who had first gained fame as an Indian fighter, decreed that the Cherokees be forcibly removed from their rich cotton fields to make way for an exploding white population. His policy set off angry debates in Congress and protests from such celebrated Northern writers as Ralph Waldo Emerson. Southern slave owners saw that defense of the Cherokees as linked to a growing abolitionist movement. They understood that the protests would not end with protecting a few Indian tribes.

Langguth tells the dramatic story of the desperate fate of the Cherokees as they were driven out of Georgia at bayonet point by U.S. Army forces led by General Winfield Scott. At the center of the story are the American statesmen of the day—Henry Clay, John Quincy Adams, John C. Calhoun—and those Cherokee leaders who tried to save their people—Major Ridge, John Ridge, Elias Boudinot, and John Ross.

Driven West presents wrenching firsthand accounts of the forced march across the Mississippi along a path of misery and death that the Cherokees called the Trail of Tears. Survivors reached the distant Oklahoma territory that Jackson had marked out for them, only to find that the bloodiest days of their ordeal still awaited them.

In time, the fierce national collision set off by Jackson’s Indian policy would encompass the Mexican War, the bloody frontier wars over the expansion of slavery, the doctrines of nullification and secession, and, finally, the Civil War itself.

In his masterly narrative of this saga, Langguth captures the idealism and betrayals of headstrong leaders as they steered a raw and vibrant nation in the rush to its destiny.

From Publishers Weekly
USC professor of journalism Langguth (Union, 1812) maintains America's first civil war occurred during the 1830s when Andrew Jackson expelled Indian tribes from the Deep South. Recounting the events from 1825 through the Civil War (which forced the Cherokees to choose between North and South), he puts in context the expulsion of the Cherokees from the South and their tragic Trail of Tears. Langguth proceeds through chapters that each focus on one figure in the drama, from John Calhoun to Cherokee chief John Ross. By 1820, wars and draconian peace treaties had already eliminated many Indians from the South. Exhorted by Southern white leaders to move to Oklahoma territory, some complied, but many refused; some became Christian. The end came when Andrew Jackson overcame Northern opposition to the 1830 Indian Removal Act. The army ejected reluctant Indians and with little planning for the long trip, 25%–50% percent of the 50,000 deportees died of disease and starvation. Readers of this engrossing, profoundly depressing history may not consider the fight over Indian removal civil war, but few will doubt that it represents a bitter North–South conflict in which the bad guys won. From Booklist
Excluding the most die-hard southern apologists, there is a consensus among historians that the original sin of slavery lay at the root of the sectional strife that developed into the Civil War. Within that consensus, however, there remains considerable debate. Why, for example, did the strife break out into a full-blown civil war, and why did it break out when it did? Langguth asserts that the uprooting of the so-called Five Civilized Tribes under the Jackson administration set in motion a train of events that led to the Mexican War. To illustrate his argument, Langguth traces four decades of American history between the end of the War of 1812 and the end of the Mexican War. He does so primarily by providing examinations of the personalities and actions of key players in those decades, including Henry Clay, John Calhoun, John Quincy Adams, and Cherokee leaders Major Ridge and John Ross. Langguth may not prove a direct line of causation to the Civil War, but he writes well and provides interesting insights into the actions of these men. --Jay Freeman

Review
“A fast-paced, lively narrative history of American politics from the 1820s to the Civil War. . . captures the dark drama of Indian removal. . . Driven West delivers a timely reminder that we will—and should—be judged by how we treat "the least among us." —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

“Langguth has few equals when it comes to historical reporting.” –Tuscon Citizen

Magnificent Sweeping History
By W. S. Jones
I bought this book on the heels of reading Freehling's Road to Disunion Vol I., and was not disappointed. The history is well-written and as close to prose as one would hope to find in a work of non-fiction.
I especially liked that while the author told us what happened on the Trail Of Tears he tried to present the reasons why leaders of the U.S. (most notably Old Hickory) pushed to have the tribes removed out West.
Also, this was not just a history of the Trail of Tears - it was much more! It was the whole historical milieu of the U.S. from the 1820s through the 1860s. And in this the reader is transported back in time to a place whose ethos and mores seem so alien. I even found myself upset at several points because the way the tribes were treated and thought if I could just get a time machine I would warn them of what was to come.
It took me less than a week to plow through this, and I'd say I read at about an average pace. SO, if you would like to ring in the New Year with a greater understanding of a period of U.S. history that generally gets overlooked - I would highly recommend this book!

Political History Buffs Will Love this Book
By Bill Emblom
I have two of author A.J. Langguth's books in my library, Patriots and Union 1812. I especially enjoyed Patriots, an absolutely fantastic book on the American Revolution. I believe this book, Driven West, rates five stars for the wealth of information author A.J. Langguth provides the reader. However, if you, like me, have a limited background regarding the political history of this time period in America's history you may feel somewhat overwhelmed. This book if filled with the politics of the time involving the likes of Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay (the first man to lie in state in the Capitol rotunda), John C. Calhoun, John Ross, Martin Van Buren, Winfield Scott, Seuquoyah, James Buchanan, William Henry Harrison, and John Tyler among numerous others. If you have a background knowledge of such individuals I'm sure you will do fine.

The major issues of the day were the forced removal of the Cherokee Indians from the Southeast onto the wastelands of Oklahoma along with the issue of slavery coming to a head. Author Langguth provides us with a description of the personalities of the many individuals that made up the national scene at this time and their relationship, both positive and negative towards one another.

If you enjoy political history this book will be a treasure for you. As for me I stuck with the book to the end, but I did find it to be tough going.

Good overview of the title topic...
By Coach Pritch
This book won't give you a complete picture of the Cherokees, or most Indians for that matter, but it is a great overview of this episode. I agree with previous reviewers that mention the political aspect to the book. I enjoyed some of the political background on these events, though as a previous review mentioned, it did move quite fast and could be difficult to keep track of all the different people mentioned. I feel that you get a sufficient look into the thoughts and motivations of the Cherokee factions involved. I thought it was well written (despite a few minor mistakes) and a good read. I look forward to checking out Mr. Langguth's books on the Revolution and the War of 1812.

WTF?????
By Ms LeDiva
Okay...I get this is a novella and not a full length novel, but there was a lot of telling and not doing in this book. Mainly, it was just one big narrative. I've read three of Noire's books G-spot being the best since the other two were basically G-spot again just different characters. I bought this book when it first came out with another of her books which i believe was the third one from her at the time. When i finished reading that book and saw i just bought and read the same book 3 times there was no way i was getting trapped into reading baby brother. well here it is a couple years later and i've run out of stuff to read so what do i do, pick up baby brother and for what?

I really hate how Priest let the devil have him by making the monster come back out. It was a stupid turn about for him and so elementary and predictable were not only his actions, but the entire book. It was like saying God doesn't exist. Why would brutally kill 2 old people who had nothing to do with his brother's death. Didn't he know that God said 'vengenace shall be mine'? The book had it's entertaining parts which is the only reason i gave three and not the two stars i wanted to.

I don't know what to say other than WTF???

Trashy
By Hip Teacher
I am a high school English teacher and I picked this book up on the bargain shelf on my way through the check out line. The cover looked interesting and seeing that 50 Cent wrote it, I thought it would be a good book to add to my repertoire for reluctant readers. I was excited thinking I had really ran across something that my teen students would gobble up. I realized after reading the first 3 pages, which describes in much detail the main character having sex with his girlfriend, that this book wasn't going to fly. AFter reading a few more pages, the language and content aren't something that I would want my students to be exposed to. My instincts were right, it would probably keep the interest of reluctant readers, but for the wrong reasons. It is like a trashy Harlequin novel for teens.

Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music, by Greg Kot

No less than a decade ago, the majority of mainstream music was funneled through a handful of media conglomerates. But now more individuals are listening to more music from a greater variety of sources than at any time in history.

Ripped tells the story of how the laptop generation created a new music industry, with fans and bands rather than corporations in charge. In this new world, bands aren’t just musicmakers but self-contained multimedia businesses; and fans aren’t just consumers but distributors and even collaborators. Since this digital revolution hit the music industry, its infiltration into every other form of media has been well documented, if often not well understood. Ripped brilliantly illustrates how, when, and where the changes happened first and leaves us with an understanding of how to move forward.

From Publishers Weekly
In what has become a growing field, Kot's account of the music industry's massive struggles and glimmers of success in the digital age stands out for its sturdily constructed prose and command of up-to-date facts. The narrative moves chronologically from the late 1990s to the late 2000s, pivoting deftly from such subjects as the havoc deregulation wreaked on mainstream radio, the recording industry's attempted shock and awe–style crackdown on downloading and the recent pay-what-you-want online selling model pioneered by Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. One of Kot's great strengths is that he is an able and passionate chronicler of the independent labels, musicians and critics whose rise in influence has been the definite upside of the old power structure's collapse. Kot gives us the first essential, critical account of the ever-expanding reach of the indie music Web site Pitchfork Media, a well informed analysis of the history and recent hyperdevelopment of sample-based music and self-contained portraits of new model artists such as Arcade Fire and Bright Eyes. The book thankfully avoids the technology and industry gossip possibilities inherent in the subject and instead focuses on the sometimes unexpectedly wonderful mutations in the way that musicians and listeners think about popular music. From Booklist
Kot, venerable pop-music reviewer for the Chicago Tribune and music blogger extraordinaire, brings readers up-to-date on how the “wired generation” changed the style of modern pop (as every generation does) and the way in which the stuff gets to fans. Along the way, he describes the near-demise of the big record labels (the chapter “Consolidated to Death” is particularly pithy), the online music downloading court skirmishes with consumers and bands alike (with special attention paid to Metallica’s contretemps with Napster), the waning influence of MTV, and bands bypassing corporate players to take their music straight to the audience via the Web. Notably, Radiohead and Metallica gave Kot access, and the results constitute the best summary of the huge recent changes in the business of pop to date. It’s too bad, perhaps, that the current state of the music biz makes it incumbent on a talented critic like Kot to consider the business side of the music more deeply than the artistic side of it, but that’s the situation, and Kot is up to explaining it. --Mike Tribby

Review
"A well-researched and highly opinionated history. . . . This book makes for provocative reading, but Kot is above all a music lover and that comes across nomatter which side of the issue you’re on.” (The Boston Globe)

“[Ripped] is the best kind of journalism, even-tempered and provocative, factual and soulful.” (Christian Science Monitor)

“Greg Kot tell us what happened . . . in his well-reported book about music in the Internet Age. . . . Kot understands that it’s always entertaining to detail the thrash and roar of a carnivorous dinosaur in its death throes, as small and clever mammals—in this case, music lovers—win the day.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“Thought-provoking . . . enlightening . . . [a] substantive examination of the chaotic music world.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“If you’re looking for a big-picture guide to music, and how you interact with it, right-this second, Ripped is a good way to go.” (Nylon magazine)

“Mr. Kot, who writes in an engaging but highly anecdotal style, does a nimble job of showing how the Internet has lifted the careers of particular musicians.” (Michiko Kakutani The New York Times)

"Kot is a talented critic." (Booklist)

“Stands out for its sturdily constructed prose and command of up-to-date facts. . . . The book thankfully avoids the technology and industry gossip possibilities inherent in the subject and instead focuses on the sometimes unexpectedly wonderful mutations in the way that musicians and listeners think about popular music.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Clear, concise and entertaining account of the tectonic shift in the recording industry over the past decade . . . Indispensable for anyone who wants to understand popular music in the 21st century.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“A perceptive, unblinking, and up-to-the-minute take on the seismic transformations of the recording industry in the digital age. . . Kot’s breezy, entertaining, journalistic style and sympathetic tone consistently draw in the reader. Essential for all those interested in the intersection of music and technology.” (Library Journal)

“An interesting book [that] details the sea change that’s choking big music studios and middleman and creating a landscape where smaller bands proliferate and manage to sustain themselves without the backing of music moguls.” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

"Informative and entertaining." (Huffingtonpost.com)

Good background/analysis of the last 10 years of the music business
By T. Scarillo
Greg Kot is a good rock writer/reviewer, Chicago Tribune columnist, and is frequently published in Rolling Stone (as national magazines go), among other publications. His new book, "Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music", provides a good recap of the last ten years or so of the music industry, as concerns developments on the digital front. I found the book of particular interest, as I have worked in the music business in one capacity or another for almost 15 years and remember pretty much all of what's contained in the book. If you are not aware of, and want to learn about the music industry's recent digital developments, then this book is a very good way to get up to speed.

The chapters focus on key events/artists that were pivotal in the changing music business model over the last decade. Key events such as the rise of Napster (and the music industry's attempts to contain and destroy it, rather than embrace the technology and monetize it), Metallica's fight against Napster, the departure of established acts (Madonna, Radiohead, McCartney, Prince, NIN, et al.) from the major label system in favor of non-traditional music companies/doing it themselves, newer artists availing themselves of technology to reach their fans and `do it on their own' (such as Ani DiFranco, Bright Eyes, and others), the rise/domination of the Ipod and ITunes, and chapter bumpers of various interviewees' mindsets and insights into how they acquire music (eg. Some younger people either don't realize that they are violating a copyright/impacting someone's livelihood, with illegal downloading, or simply don't care). Some chapters are more interesting than others (which might depend on how familiar you are with the artists that Kot covers), though the book doesn't ever get bogged down in boring narrative, and it explains more-recent industry-specific concepts in easy to understand terms for the layman (though a prior understanding, on the reader's part, of the basics of the music industry's workings helps, but is not required).

Kot hits pretty much all the key events that we've seen in the last ten years or so, that have impacted the music industry business model. I'm not convinced there are any answers in this book as to where we're going to be in ten years, which is not necessarily Kot's fault (as he's fairly objective in reporting the circumstances), as the `new model' of the music business is still being created and the kinks of the `new order' are still being worked out. But what's going to happen in the next ten years or so, if older acts come off the road for good, and new acts don't develop? We'll likely hear endless complaints about how new music sucks and no major artists are developing (which is kinda what we're hearing now and have been for a while). I'd like to have seen more speculation on where we're headed. I've also spent a long time waiting for some writer, somewhere, to point out the disingenuous stance of a band like 2008's-independent-Radiohead, for example, that rails against major labels and gives little credit for the help they received along the way, while the 1993-baby-band version of Radiohead was probably only too happy to have a record deal, able to pursue their dream with a label supporting them at the beginning with marketing efforts, so that they could eventually get to the level they're at today (and be in a position to dictate their own future, as well as bad-mouth the system). That's more or less on p. 237, finally, though that point probably needed to be made a bit sooner in the book because it seems to be a key factor present in basically ALL superstar-level career arcs, particularly as they depart labels for DIY deals. Take the labels' money when young and hungry, get into `the machine', attain huge success, get jaded, then bad-mouth the company as having somehow hindered you every step of the way. My take away from what I read was that most of the acts who were nurtured and given two or three albums to develop and became long-term successes, today would probably be done if their first album didn't hit, and looking at barista careers. Unfortunately, the economics of the business might very well not allow for 3 chances these days. Are labels still necessary? Yes, probably, if an artist wants to reach a massive audience, because that's what major labels are geared toward, and because it's hard to get traction (not to mention visibility on traditional outlets, like late-nite shows) when EVERY band out there trying to do it on their own has a myspace page, sans higher-level marketing know-how and connections. It's a double-edged sword: the technology that empowers any/every band to promote itself and possibly actually earn a living doing what they love, is the same technology that overwhelms and inundates users with almost TOO MUCH unfiltered information. Was the industry wrong in not embracing Napster and nipping the problem in the bud, and monetizing it? Probably, but we're way past that at this point, as Kot points out (and I agree with). Now that the toothpaste is out of the tube, and the economics of the business have been turned upside down, who's going to make that marketing-intensive investment, if labels aren't around? It's hard to imagine that a band, doing it on their own via a website and without a label's muscle, will be able to reach the equivalent of being a 5-million seller, but that's probably NOT the object anymore, if they're netting more per download and able to sustain a touring career and fanbase, and make a living. The model is definitely changing, toward empowering the artist, as Kot illustrates effectively over and over in the book.

Everything has changed
By Thomas E. Davis
Greg Kot makes his point early and often: over the past decade, greedy executives perched at the summits of rapidly-consolidating media conglomerates lost billions of dollars in a clueless and futile campaign to keep music flowing through traditional pipelines. They delayed, dithered, or flat-out refused to adapt their business models to the paradigm-shifts of digital music and peer-to-peer file sharing, and other players rushed in to fill the vacuum.

Inherently unimaginative and terminally resistant to change, the music industry has typically released dull, homogenized product, together with a few perennial blockbusters, to generate revenue. Independent companies occupied tiny niches, while the major labels relied on a lucrative pay-to-play distribution system. They put effort into developing performers who showed profit potential and dropped any artist that didn't show a quick return.

Then came the revolution. The majors got their keisters kicked by angry musicians and bored consumers who used new technology to make their lives and their culture more interesting. CD prices dropped to nearly half of what they were ten years earlier. Even giants like Paul McCartney, Madonna, U2, and the Eagles finally jumped ship from their labels.

Not just record companies got hurt: so did artists, producers, publishers, concert promoters, radio stations, and CD stores that refused to adjust to the new reality. No longer do people learn about music from radio, MTV, Tower (which went belly-up in 2006), or conventional, established taste-makers. Now YouTube, iTunes, Amazon, blogs, zines, and independent media outlets are conduits for cultural buzz and the wealth it produces.

As befits the multi-headed hydra that is music nowadays, Kot has written an unusual, non-chronological hybrid of entertainment and economics reportage. He moves briskly and authoritatively, alternating between discussing the aesthetics of the music and examining the nitty-gritty of the market. While at times waxing eloquent in his analysis of the creative process and the stories of individual bands, most of his coverage is very concrete, a product of interviews with the artists and businesspeople in the trenches.

Kot offers quotes from musicians, insiders, and fans about how the industry has changed, how it works today, and how it's likely to evolve in the future. He contrasts forward-thinking acts like Tom Petty, David Byrne, The Beastie Boys, OK Go, R.E.M., Sinéad O'Connor, Lily Allen, Ani DiFranco, Björk, and Apple founder Steve Jobs with stodgy dinosaurs like Clear Channel, the RIAA, and Metallica, who made the mistake of suing Napster and their own best customers.

Entire chapters are devoted to specific performers and their stories: Arcade Fire, Conor Oberst, Death Cab for Cutie, Girl Talk, Prince, Wilco (about whom Kot wrote a whole book), and especially Radiohead each get in-depth profiles.

For those interested in the subject of music -- and that includes most young people -- this book is a fine introduction. Those not fascinated by popular music may choose to skip a few chapters that focus on groups they don't care for, but they'll have their eyes opened as to how entertainers are making money these days and how technology is changing the world of business and the world at large.

Interesting, but too narrow
By carlamudpie
Greg Kot is an interesting writer and tells many good stories. I sped through this book.

But what he offers here is less than what it should be. He digresses into band vignettes that, yes, I enjoyed reading but sometimes did not lead to a larger point (even though he tried).

He ignores the influence of satellite radio, eMusic, and the opinions of any listener older than those of Generation X (unless they are in the music business).

His focus is essentially the college rock world (for lack of a better term), and what those listeners are into. Meaning: hip-hop is discussed in reference to Kanye West, rap mix tapes are ignored, and forget what someone who listens to reggaeton, dancehall, metal etc might have to say about digital technology. Even though vinyl sales are a very small percentage overall, he fails to mention how they increased almost 100% (I believe) in 2007 or 2008. He doesn't delve into the fate of independent record stores, and how some of those still standing are doing pretty well (including my local favorite, Redscroll Records in Wallingford CT). He mentions some independent labels, such as Merge, but doesn't get into what keeps them running - how exactly are they doing it?

This will be very enjoyable for a certain type of music listener, but unfortunately does not have the larger-scale reporting and research I was hoping for.
