The 4400: Welcome to Promise City, by Greg Cox

Based on the hit USA Network series The 4400, an original novel about a group of 4400 people taken out of their time and returned to the present day with special powers, only no one, including them, is sure if they are a force for good...or for evil.

Over nine thousand people were killed in Seattle, when promicin was unleashed within the city limits. Now the Federal government has to decide how to deal with citizens who have powers and abilities that cannot be legislated. An uneasy truce has arisen between Jordan Collier, the self-styled leader of The 4400, and the Federal government. While he stopped more people from being killed, Collier was the one responsible for unleashing promicin on the world. Now governments around the world have to wonder just who controls these powerful people and just what are Collier and The 4400 going to do next?

Almost perfect
By small review
I knew the show had been canceled prematurely before I watched all four seasons on DVD but, being the glutton for punishment I am, I went ahead and watched them anyway. How bad could the lack of ending be? I thought. I never anticipated how great the show would be and how hooked I would become. I rarely read tv/movie novelizations, but after the last episode I frantically searched Amazon for any available book that might give me some closure.

*If you haven't finished watching the series, then don't read any further*

Lucky for me I found Welcome to Promise City and quickly ordered a copy. This book picks up directly after the last episode where Collier's P-Positives were controlling Seattle after the promicin outbreak left thousands dead and NTAC scrambling. Everything that happens in the book follows perfectly with the TV show: the characters think, talk, and behave as they did on the show and, thankfully, the author completely avoided adding any tweaks to their personalities as so often happens in books like this. Not only are the characters consistent, but the plot follows perfectly in line with what would have likely happened in the show had it continued.

All of the core characters (including the Marked) appear in the book and play significant roles in advancing the plot. The only reason I gave the book four stars instead of five is because, given we only have two books to wrap up the entire series, not enough happened in this book. A lot did happen, but with only one more book to go, there will either be a rush of action, or too many unanswered questions in the final book.

Must for 4400 fans!
By Bj
Being a fan of the TV show The 4400, I was very disappointed when the show came to an end. I haven't read any of the previous stories written during the airing of the show but I just couldn't leave the show the way they ended it. Great ending, I just wanted more.

This book starts right off with the end of the series. Greg Cox, who also wrote The Vesuvius Prophecy for the 4400, does an excellent job of continuing the story where the show left off. Being a book written with established character the is no time spent on introductions or familiarizing the reader to who's who, which works perfectly. The book reads much like a script and it's very easy to visualize and conceptualize the characters voices in your mind while reading.

Don't want to give too much away, it's a very good read and feels like a collection of lost episodes.

Recommend this to fans of the series and also recommend picked up the next book in the series Promises Broken by David Mack, it picks up right where this one ends and also acts as the last chapter in the 4400 cannon, so far...
