Overblown: How Politicians and the Terrorism Industry Inflate National Security Threats, and Why We Believe Them, by John Mueller

Why have there been no terrorist attacks in the United States since 9/11? It is ridiculously easy for a single person with a bomb-filled backpack, or a single explosives-laden automobile, to launch an attack. So why hasn't it happened? The answer is surely not the Department of Homeland Security, which cannot stop terrorists from entering the country, legally or otherwise. It is surely not the Iraq war, which has stoked the hatred of Muslim extremists around the world and wasted many thousands of lives. Terrorist attacks have been regular events for many years -- usually killing handfuls of people, occasionally more than that. Is it possible that there is a simple explanation for the peaceful American homefront? Is it possible that there are no al-Qaeda terrorists here? Is it possible that the war on terror has been a radical overreaction to a rare event? Consider: 80,000 Arab and Muslim immigrants have been subjected to fingerprinting and registration, and more than 5,000 foreign nationals have been imprisoned -- yet there has not been a single conviction for a terrorist crime in America. A handful of plots -- some deadly, some intercepted -- have plagued Europe and elsewhere, and even so, the death toll has been modest. We have gone to war in two countries and killed tens of thousands of people. We have launched a massive domestic wiretapping program and created vast databases of information once considered private. Politicians and pundits have berated us about national security and patriotic duty, while encroaching our freedoms and sending thousands of young men off to die.It is time to consider the hypothesis that dare not speak its name: we have wildly overreacted. Terrorism has been used by murderous groups for many decades, yet even including 9/11, the odds of an American being killed by international terrorism are microscopic. In general, international terrorism doesn't do much damage when considered in almost any reasonable context. The capacity of al-Qaeda or of any similar group to do damage in the United States pales in comparison to the capacity other dedicated enemies, particularly international Communism, have possessed in the past. Lashing out at the terrorist threat is frequently an exercise in self-flagellation because it is usually more expensive than the terrorist attack itself and because it gives the terrorists exactly what they are looking for. Much, probably most, of the money and effort expended on counterterrorism since 2001 (and before, for that matter) has been wasted. The terrorism industry and its allies in the White House and Congress have preyed on our fears and caused enormous damage. It is time to rethink the entire enterprise and spend much smaller amounts on only those things that do matter: intelligence, law enforcement, and disruption of radical groups overseas. Above all, it is time to stop playing into the terrorists' hands, by fear-mongering and helping spread terror itself.

From Booklist
Among possible U.S. terrorist targets listed by the Department of Homeland Security are a petting zoo in Alabama and a roadside water park in Florida. By listing such unlikely targets, the administration has heightened fear and the cost of protecting citizens, according to Mueller, a political science professor and national security consultant. He examines how terrorism hypervigilance is threatening civil liberties, the economy, and lives. Mueller explores three themes: terrorist threats are overblown; we can learn from the lessons of previous international threats that they are often exaggerated; and by applying these lessons, we can create policy that reduces fear and the cost of overreaction. Among other observations, Mueller notes that despite fears of chemical attacks, most such weapons are "incapable of perpetrating mass destruction," and our counterterrorism tactics tend to be expensive "self-flagellation" that bolsters the image of the terrorists. If the objective is to keep Americans frightened and willing to spend money and relinquish freedom, then the terrorists are winning, Mueller maintains. Interesting reading on a subject that will continue to hold great political sway. Vanessa Bush

Introduction

Overblown

Upon discovering that Weeki Wachee Springs, his Florida roadside water park, had been included on the Department of Homeland Security's list of over 80,000 potential terrorist targets, its marketing and promotion manager, John Athanason, turned reflective. "I can't imagine bin Laden trying to blow up the mermaids," he mused, "but with terrorists, who knows what they're thinking. I don't want to think like a terrorist, but what if the terrorists try to poison the water at Weeki Wachee Springs?"

Whatever his imaginings, however, he went on to report that his enterprise had quickly and creatively risen to the occasion -- or seized the opportunity. They were working to get a chunk of the counterterrorism funds allocated to the region by the well-endowed, anxiety-provoking, ever-watchful Department of Homeland Security.

Which is the greater threat: terrorism, or our reaction against it? The Weeki Wachee experience illustrates the problem. A threat that is real but likely to prove to be of limited scope has been massively, perhaps even fancifully, inflated to produce widespread and unjustified anxiety. This process has then led to wasteful, even self-parodic expenditures and policy overreactions, ones that not only very often do more harm and cost more money than anything the terrorists have accomplished, but play into their hands.

The way terrorism anxiety has come to envelop the nation is also illustrated by a casual exchange on television's 60 Minutes. In an interview, filmmaker-provocateur Michael Moore happened to remark, "The chances of any of us dying in a terrorist incident is very, very, very small," and his interviewer, Bob Simon, promptly admonished, "But no one sees the world like that." Remarkably, both statements are true -- the first only a bit more so than the second. It is the thesis of this book that our reaction against terrorism has caused more harm than the threat warrants -- not just to civil liberties, not just to the economy, but even to human lives. And our reaction has often helped the terrorists more than it has hurt them. It is the reactive consequences stemming from Simon's perspective -- or from what journalist Mark Bowden has characterized as "housewives in Iowa . . . watching TV afraid that al-Qaeda's going to charge in their front door" -- that generate one of the chief problems presented by terrorism.

International terrorism generally kills a few hundred people a year worldwide -- not much more, usually, than the number who drown yearly in bathtubs in the United States. Americans worry intensely about "another 9/11," but if one of these were to occur every three months for the next five years, the chance of being killed in one of them is 0.02 percent. Astronomer Alan Harris has calculated that at present rates, the lifetime probability that a resident of the globe will die at the hands of international terrorists is 1 in 80,000, about the same likelihood that one would die over the same interval from the impact on the earth of an especially ill-directed asteroid or comet.

But such numbers are almost never discussed: Moore's outburst is exceedingly rare. Instead, most Americans seem to have developed a false sense of insecurity about terrorism. Thus, since 9/11, over a period in which there have been no international terror attacks whatever in the United States and in which an individual's chances of being killed by a terrorist have remained microscopic even if one -- or many -- did occur, nearly half of the population has continually expressed worry that they or a member of their family will become a victim of terrorism, as Figure 1 shows. Moreover, when asked if they consider another terrorist attack likely in the United States within the next several months, fewer than 10 percent of Americans usually respond with what has proven to be the correct answer: "Not at all likely." Yet, this group has not notably increased in size despite continual confirmation of its prescience.

That the costs of terrorism chiefly arise from fear and from overwrought responses holds even for the tragic events of September 11, 2001, which constituted by far the most destructive set of terrorist acts in history and resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. The economic costs of reaction have been much higher than those inflicted by the terrorists even in that record-shattering episode, and considerably more than 3,000 Americans have died since 9/11 because, out of fear, they drove in cars rather than flew in airplanes, or because they were swept into wars made politically possible by the terrorist events.

Moreover, as terrorist kingpin and devil du jour Osama bin Laden has gleefully noted, fear, alarmism, and overreaction suit the terrorists' agenda just fine because they create the damaging consequences the terrorists seek but are unable to perpetrate on their own. As he put it mockingly in a videotaped message in 2004, it is "easy for us to provoke and bait. . . . All that we have to do is to send two mujahidin . . . to raise a piece of cloth on which is written al-Qaeda in order to make the generals race there to cause America to suffer human, economic, and political losses." His policy, he extravagantly believes, is one of "bleeding America to the point of bankruptcy," and it is one that depends on overreaction by the target: he triumphally points to the fact that the 9/11 terrorist attacks cost al-Qaeda $500,000, while the attack and its aftermath inflicted, he claims, a cost of more than $500 billion on the United States. Shortly after 9/11, he crowed, "America is full of fear from its north to its south, from its west ot its east. Thank God for that."

PRESENTING AN UNCONVENTIONAL CONVENTIONAL WISDOM

In exploring these issues, this book develops three themes, in this order: (1) terrorism's threat, while real, has been much overblown, something that aids terrorist aims; (2) this process is a familiar one since, with the benefit of hindsight, we can see that many international threats have been considerably inflated in the past; and (3) applying these lessons, policy toward terrorism should very substantially focus on reducing the damaging fears and overreactions terrorism so routinely fosters.

In the process, I present a considerable number of propositions that, it seems to me, should be -- but decidedly aren't -- the conventional wisdom on this subject. These propositions are certainly susceptible to debate and to reasoned criticism, but it seems to me that they, rather than their hysterical if attention-grabbing opposites, ought to be the base from which the discussion proceeds. At the very least, they should be part of the policy discussion mix, but they seem almost entirely to have been ignored.

Among these propositions are the following:

  • In general, terrorism, particularly international terrorism, doesn't do much damage when considered in almost any reasonable context.
  • Although airplanes can still be blown up, another attack like the one on 9/11 is virtually impossible. In 2001 the hijackers had the element of surprise working for them: previous hijackings (including one conducted by Muslim terrorists six months earlier) had mostly been fairly harmless as the perpetrators generally landed the planes somewhere and released, or were forced to release, the passengers. After the 9/11 experience, passengers and crew will fight to prevent a takeover, as was shown on the fourth plane on 9/11.
  • The likelihood that any individual American will be killed in a terrorist event is microscopic.
  • Just about any damage terrorists are likely to be able to perpetrate can be readily absorbed. To deem the threat an "existential" one is somewhere between extravagant and absurd.
  • The capacity of al-Qaeda or of any similar group to do damage in the United States pales in comparison to the capacity other dedicated enemies, particularly international communism, have possessed in the past.
  • Lashing out at the terrorist threat is frequently an exercise in self-flagellation because it is usually more expensive than the terrorist attack itself and because it gives the terrorists exactly what they are looking for.
  • Chemical and radiological weapons, and most biological ones as well, are incapable of perpetrating mass destruction.
  • The likelihood that a terrorist group will be able to master nuclear weapons any time soon is extremely, perhaps vanishingly, small.
  • Although murderous and dedicated, al-Qaeda is a very small and very extreme group, and it is unlikely by itself to have the capacity for taking over any significant government.
  • Al-Qaeda's terrorist efforts on 9/11 and in the years since have been substantially counterproductive.
  • Although additional terrorist attacks in the United States certainly remain possible, an entirely plausible explanation for the fact that there have been none since 2001 is that there is no significant international terrorist presence within the country.
  • Policies that continually, or even occasionally, focus entirely on worst-case scenarios (or worst-case fantasies) are unwise and can be exceedingly wasteful.
  • In fact, much, probably most of the money and effort expended on counterterrorism since 2001 (and before, for that matter) has been wasted.
  • Seeking to protect all potential targets against terrorist attack is impossible and foolish. In fact, just about anything is a potential target.
  • Terrorism should be treated essentially as a criminal problem calling mainly for the application of policing methods, particularly in the international sphere, not military ones.
  • Because terrorism probably presents only a rather limited threat, a viable policy approach might center around creating the potential to absorb its direct effects and to mitigate its longer range consequences while continuing to support international policing efforts...

Overdue
By Retired Reader
At long last, a book has been published that takes a realistic look at the so-called `Global War on Terrorism' (GWOT) and provides an honest assessment of terrorist threat to the U.S. and its citizens. Its author John Mueller is to be congratulated for being the first author that this reviewer is aware of to put the 9/11 tragedy in a rational context.

The terrorist attacks of September 11 2001 were indeed terrible and tragic. Yet according to Mueller, there is ample evidence that these attacks were aberration and not the prelude to an all out asymmetrical war against the U.S. by the Islamic extremists influenced by Osama bin Laden in a movement called al Qaeda. Indeed in his opinion the U.S. reaction to that dreadful day were completely out of proportion to the danger actually posed by Islamic terrorists.

Looking at the essentially pointless GWOT, this book points out that terrorism like crime will always be with us, but the chances of a U.S. citizen being killed by a terrorist are considerably less than the same citizen being killed in a robbery. It also points out that the recurring phantom of terrorist use of WMD within the U.S. or any place else for that matter is highly implausible at best.

Since 9/11 the U.S. Government has spent millions of dollars to protect Americans from a threat which, as this book points out, scarcely exists at all. The tragic events of 9/11 have basically served to fuel to the political demagogy, curtailments of constitutional rights, and bureaucratic absurdity that appear to be the principal fruits of the first foreign attack on U.S. soil since Pearl Harbor.

A Baltimore newspaperman and acute observer of the human condition (H.L. Mencken) once commented that real motto of the United States ought to be "Safety First" not "E Pluribus Unim". He comment was based on his observations of the irrational fears that often drove his fellow citizens into ridiculous follies. This book supports his point.

Makes you go hmmm

I think people don't like this book because it forces us to reassess our fears. Many people criticize Mueller by saying he claims Al Queda is not a threat. On the contrary Mueller contends Al Queda is a threat, just not a very big one. Every time a catostrophic event happens in this country, we tend to falseley label it as an omen of things to come. If you disagree with Mueller thats fine, but the book is well written and presents points nobody else is bringing up.

Required Reading for Chicken Licken
By Olly Buxton
This is an interesting, valuable and important book, and I'm fairly sure almost no-one has or, for that matter will, read it. I will do what I can to change that.

John Mueller is from a venerable but sadly rare tradition of Academic commentators: the skeptics. It's that perspective he lends to our "troubled times" and over this course of this tidily executed, thoroughly sourced and entertaining book, Mueller systematically demolishes much of the public hype which holds us up in airport terminals, eats up our tax dollars and does its level best to prevent us sleeping soundly in our beds.

He makes, and repeats, a point which many otherwise perfectly sensible and well-informed commentators can't fathom: The biggest source of terror in our lives is not terrorists in Afghan caves, but our own politicians and media pundits constantly blathering about them. The terrorists themselves cause sporadic but, in fact, very limited mayhem.

The thousands of hungry mouths who comprise the "terrorism industry" on the other hand - the politicians, civil servants, defence contractors, security analysts and media commentators - each of whom is primarily interested in justifying his own existence or convincing us to open our wallets - each has a vested interest in persuading us we should be soiling rather than sleeping in our beds. Their statements, therefore, we should take with a pinch of salt.

But even though we all know we ought to, we don't. We acquiesce: we put up with speculative, unsourced, unattributed, and frequently credulous nonsense - we tolerate queues and being unneccesarily fondled at airports, hikes in tax rates and restrictions on our civil liberties. John Mueller's book sets out to provide us a reality check and ask, pointedly, why we are so easily prepared to do that.

By way of preface Mueller lists a series of items which ought to be - but aren't - conventional wisdom. They're all very big points, among them:

* Terrorism just doesn't do much damage considered in any reasonable context (nine times as many Americans are struck by lightning in the average year as are killed by terrorists)

* Even where Terrorism has horrendous results, it tends to be one-off events (despite six years of anxiety, there has not been another terrorist attack in the U.S. *at all*, let alone one on the scale of 9/11)

* Catastrophic events are by their nature are hard to repeat (never again will a plane full of unsuspecting passengers sit and allow unarmed men to fly them to their deaths without intervening, since the assumption "we'll be used as hostages so we're safe for now" no longer holds)

* Terrorist actions tend to be counterproductive on almost every level any way: far from throwing New York into chaos, panic and Hobbesian brutality, the direct and immediate result of 9/11 was the sudden blossoming of compassion, cooperation and cohesion in the city on a completely unprecedented scale - a place not usually known for its neighborliness or Samaritan spirit

* The cost (both human and economic terms) of the "War on Terror" has been far greater than the cost of Terrorist actions themselves (even taking into account the financial losses sustained in the capital markets)

* The "War on Terror", being as it is a war on an idea, is utterly unwinnable. There is no practical way of eradicating the possibility of individuals, for whatever reason, engaging in entirely destructive acts of violence. Like road fatalities (of which there are tens of thousands each year in the US) the risk of terrorist attacks are a fact of life in built up areas which we should take reasonable, dispassionate, measures to minimise bearing in mind the opportunity costs of doing so.

Mueller doesn't take an (overtly) political position - his arguments are not based on views about foreign policy nor the moral rights and wrongs of the situation, but an statistical analysis of the costs and risks of the terrorist threat, and acknowledgment of the personal agendas which inevitably inform those who shout loudest. "If it bleeds it leads" - people don't buy newspapers to read good news, so in a competitive market it is no surprise if newspapers tend to dwell on worst case scenarios. Yes, terrorism is dreadful, Mueller says, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep it in perspective.

In short, this book is a long overdue and much needed dose of common sense.

Main Event: WWE in the Raging 80s, by Brian Shields

Every saturday night in the eighties fans would gather around their television to watch, not Saturday Night Live, but Saturday Night The Main Event. WWE wrestling beat the ratings for the most talked about show on television week after week. Here is that era captured.

“Introducing your champion, from Venice Beach, California, at three hundred and three pounds—Hulk Hogan! And his challenger . . .”

Hearing those words ring out across the arena meant you were there. It didn't matter if you were there in person, or watching on television or closed circuit. You were in the place where everyone wanted to be. You could feel the crowd; as the tension built, you were swept up and into the action. You knew you were going to witness history. You were experiencing the main event at a live WWE show.

It seemed that wrestling had changed overnight, that the men who entered the squared circle were suddenly larger than life.

Everyone wanted to see the behemoth Hulk Hogan wrestle. And the men who wrestled with and against him were his equals in creating a match and a character that no one would soon forget: Andre the Giant, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Jesse "The Body" Ventura, Jake "the Snake" Roberts, Sgt. Slaughter. They all kept you pinned to your seat as they were pinning their opponents to the mat. You just knew that you were going to see things that no one had ever seen before.

The eighties was the era that cemented WWE as the place where the best wrestlers on the planet worked. Main Event -- WWE in the Raging 80s dips into those years and reveals the most celebrated wrestlers and the matches that will be recalled as not just the best of the eighties but the best of the ages.

A GREAT LOOK AT WWE IN THE 1980'S
By COOL JEWEL
THE MAIN EVENT IS A GREAT LOOK AT WHEN THE WWE REALLY TOOK OFF IN POPULARITY. THE WWE WENT TO CABLE TV AND WRESTLING TOOK OFF. IT COVERS ALL THE WRESTLEMANIAS, MEN'S WOMEN'S AND TAG TEAM CHAMPS ALONG WITH ALL THE MANY WRESTLERS WHO HELP MADE THE WWE SO POPULAR BACK IN THE 80'S. FROM ROWDY RODDY, HULKSTER, STUDD AND ANDRE IT'S ALL HERE IN THIS BOOK. MANY OF THE SUPERSTARS ARE GIVEN A 2 OR 3 PAGE DETAILED LOOK AT THEIR CAREER AND WHERE THEY ARE NOW. I WANTED MORE AFTER I READ THIS. I REALLY ENJOYED THE NOSTALGIA IT BROUGHT BACK ESPECIALLY THE MR T AND CYNDY LAUPER HYPE IT BROUGHT BACK IN THE MID 80'S. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL WRESTLING FANS. A GREAT BUY.

Bury Vegas, Viva Extinction!
By Amazon Customer
I hope people who check these reviews out are wise enough to realize that the negative reactions from Me "Sal" and Timstuff "tim16733 are biased and therefore pretty much moot when it comes to reviewing this book: by their own admission, they are hardcore purists of the games, so anything derived from a movie that is "based on" the games is going to immeasurably hack them off.

This is a novelization, based off a Hollywood screenplay, it is bound to be outside the realm of the games - get over it.

I picked this book up to read at the beach. I wanted something light, fun and easily absorbed in the face of multiple distractions; fellow beach goers, family, music, propensity to doze in the sun. And in that vein, this book did not disappoint one bit.

The story itself, or rather the screenplay the book is based on, is pretty cut and dry: Alice (Milla Jovovich's character in the movies) is on the loose trying to help those who have survived a zombie-making plague. Part of her energy is spent running from her demons, and her would be captors, the Umbrella Corporation.

Alice stumbles upon a group of old friends leading a rag-tag caravan of survivors and does her best to protect them as they flee north as fast as they can. Relationships are forged, lives are lost, and all with the stakes ever rising.

Keith R.A. DeCandido's prose is quick and rarely bogged with any extraneous nonsense. Characters appear, get introduced, and react to what is basically a zombie story mixed with a bit of Mad Max and a sprinkle of corporate anarchy that reminded me a lot of Omni Consumer Products.

The book features a large cast of two-dimensional characters - remember folks, this is a novelization of an action movie! - and I was impressed with the way in which DeCandido breathed life into each and every one with purposeful, if not fun, back stories. And were it not for those, the characters would have become monotonous and indistinguishable.

Sometimes the characterizations get a little too stereotypical, such as Jasper a black cop in Baltimore. His overtly jive mannerisms are completely over the top; more one-dimensional then two. Equally one-dimensional is a new monster that sort of just materializes at the end. Its goofy and left field, as are the "powers" of one of the characters.

But within the context of the book, these are almost nitpicky. Things that read odd on paper will look good on film. And speaking of film, DeCandido does an impressive job of backfilling the previous films and relevant game history for those who may have missed out before this. I've probably played the game at some point, certainly saw the first movie, but that's about it. Once I got into DeCandido's narrative flow, which transitions in the first half between the past (Before) and the present (After), I slipped into the story with no problem. Course, I'm a junky for post-apocalyptic stories of lost worlds and abandoned cities (I especially loved the visual of a half-buried Las Vegas!), so this was right up my alley.

Best of all, though, was DeCandido's subtle acknowledgment that Extinction may at times seem a little silly. He constantly had the characters disbelieving the reality of actual zombies wandering around the Earth; having them admit that it is too absurd to believe - a nice nod and wink that made this all the more enjoyable as a quick, no nonsense read.

And on a private note: thank you Mr. DeCandido for the dedication to Pierce Askegren. I did not know him extremely well at all, but from what little I did know, he would in fact have really loved this....

If you are a fan of the REE movie, then you must read this.
By Daniel S. Boucher
Why 4 stars you ask when everyone else has scored it so low? I give this book a decent rating of 4 stars because the book answered all of the questions that I had after leaving the movie (which I enjoyed).

Okay, we get it, so the movies are not like the games. Give it a rest already. Seriously, why would I pay 10 bucks to go watch a movie that I already played? They added some cool easter eggs to the movies from the games (if you were paying attention) and the movies did what they had to do, expand the Resident Evil universe with new and creative characters and portray their experiences with the corrupt Umbrella corporation.

Back to the review, the book answered questions like what happened to Jill. Where's the little girl from Apocalypse (her name escapes me right now, regardless you'll be shocked at what happened!), where did Alice's powers come from and how did the virus escape and infect more cities (leading to the desert wasteland prominent in the movie) even after they destroyed the city and blamed everything on Jill, Carlos and S.T.A.R.S.?

Anyways, if you enjoyed the movie but like me left scratching your head wondering where's the rest of the story, this book will satisfy you.

- Dan.

Resident Evil: Extinction
By G. Sanchez
I loved this book! i dont know about everybody else but this is just what they needed. This books is going by how Resident Evil : Code Veronica X and Resident Evil 4 and 5 play along. Cause they are going to have the super zombies that run instead of walk. Its in a desert like area like in RE 5. This movie is just going to be the best out of all the 3 Resident Evil Movies.

Sure the writer did not go by the game, but its pretty damn close. You know how they add new characters all the time? well Alice is just one of the characters they brought out through the Movie. If you read the first novel, you will see that Alice did infact work for Umbrella and how she wants to stop them. This is like a new game that they just made into a movie. I mean they added Jill in the 2nd movie, Claire is in this one. In this movie Claire is looking for her brother. Sure the second movie was not as suspensful as the first movie and the games. If they would have made the movie like the games then it just would have been considered another game that you just cant control. If you notice, the games are most likely like a movie itself. They made Resident Evil: Apocalypse really action like type because it shows the outbreak of the virus and how people were reacting to it. its not like they were just going to sit around and wait to be killed like in the games. For a movie they need to find a stopping point to it. They made the Alice character to interact with the characters from the game to get the story just right for continuous movies to be made.

Resident Evil was a great movie. It was suspensful and it was just so awesome if you might say. They didnt like Romeros screenplay because it would just wind up like Dawn of the Dead. Sure it would have been great but to see more horror into the Resident Evil Trilogy but the action is what makes the movies alive. in the game you get bit just once and youre okay. in the movie, you get bit but there is an antivirus, you dont just get cured with a herb like in the game, if you dont get the antivirus you die simple as that. and if that happend there would be no more movies nothing.

So you see why they had to alter it and make a hero. Because while everything is going on in the game, you dont know if there is an Alice. There might be and we just dont know. So i think we should just lay back and enjoy the movies because they are awesome. and i wouldnt trade them for a copy cat version of the game any day. if i want it to be like the game i just might as well just play the game. But its good to have 2 points of view on the Raccoon City incident. The only bad part about this movie that i dont like, is that Jill is not going to be in it. thats it, other than that i am going to see this movie cause this movie is going to be the best. and if you read the book, youll see that there just might be another movie! SWEET SWEET VICTORY!

Sea of Lost Love: A Novel, by Santa Montefiore

From the author of The Gypsy Madonna and The Last Voyage of the Valentina, a breathless novel that sweeps its heroine from the Cornish coast to the rugged beauty of Puglia Italy, where she discovers a shocking truth about her family and the way to save her ancestral home.

Celestria Montague always spends her summers at Pendrift Hall, the rambling, shabby mansion adorned with wisteria and clematis that has been home to the Montague family for generations. It is 1958, and the family is celebrating her father's fiftieth birthday at a lavish ball. The celebratory night ends in death and tragedy, however, and young Celestria learns that the family may lose Pendrift Hall. Her grandfather urges Celestria to play detective, to solve the mysteries surrounding the night's events, and to save the ancient mansion if at all possible. Her quest takes her to Italy's rugged and beautiful Puglia, and into the dark, cool cloisters of the Convento di Santa Maria del Mare. Here Celestria meets an enigmatic stranger and confronts unwelcome truths about her family—and herself.

Sea of Lost Love is Santa Montefiore at her very best—sensitive, sensual, and complex.

From Publishers Weekly
A young woman finds love and sudden maturity in this charmingly melodramatic romance from the author of The Gypsy Madonna. Tragedy strikes an upper-class English family at its Cornish manor house in 1958: Robert Monty Montague has vanished, leaving behind a pile of debts, a pair of shoes washed up on the beach, a drifting motorboat bearing his gold pocket watch and a note in a bottle that reads, Forgive me. His spoiled daughter, the impossibly beautiful 21-year-old Celestria, is forced out of her shallow complacency to discover why her father, whom everyone loved and assumed to be so happy, apparently drowned himself. She follows a trail of bank statements to a seaside Italian convent converted into a family-run hotel. There, she encounters Hamish McCloud, a surly Scotsman who loathed Monty and, after a rocky start, develops a very different feeling toward Celestria. The prose is florid and fitting for the ridiculously, deliciously escapist whirlwind romance that envelopes Celestria and Hamish as the over-the-top revelations about Monty come to light. (May)

From Booklist
Set in 1958 England, Montefiore’s novel follows the fortunes of the Montagues, a wealthy English family with an estate in Cornwall. The extended family meets for idyllic summers at the estate, but their perfect world is shattered when Robert Montague drowns in what appears to be a suicide. His beautiful, vain 21-year-old daughter, Celestria, is as shocked as the rest of the family but is unwilling to simply accept his death and move on. Instead, she begins to go through his papers and is surprised to discover that he was sending the family fortune to a lawyer in the small Italian town of Puglia. Celestria takes off for Italy, where she learns her father was keeping more than a few secrets from his family. Celestria finds more than she bargained for in the form of an angry widower who seems to hate her for no reason. Readers who enjoy family drama, romance, and mystery will find it all in this lush and absorbing novel. --Kristine Huntley

Amazing Novel
By C Pan
Sea of Lost Love is an amazing book. I randomly shuffled through an 'end of the year sale' bin at a local book store and was pleasantly surprised. The author describes everything in so perfect of detail it doesn't seem like you're there, you really are. I absolutely loved how she described Italy. Also, her characters are the most developed I've seen and are so complex on many levels. Santa Montefiore is an amazing writer and I am definitely going to read her other works in the future. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a mystery along with romance.

A sea of loss, and of discovery
By Julie's Bookshelf
You won't like the heroine much at the beginning of this book and part way through. Celestria is a beautiful, spoiled aristocrat, raised by a beautiful, spoiled mother to be exactly like her. It begins with her uncle's annual birthday party at the family's Cornish .country estate. The uncle is the steady, older brother; her father the charming, will o the wisp, who, amazingly, made a fortune on a wild gamble. Everyone loves Monty, and he loves everyone too. And therein lies the tale. For Monty appears to have committed suicide by taking his small boat out into the sea. That tragic event splits open the state of the family's--and Monty's--finances, which is to say nonexistent. Celestria cannot believe that her father would commit suicide, and with the help of her grandfather, she travels to Italy to the last place he had been. She stays at an old convento that has been turned into a small hotel, run by a charming couple who were friends of Monty. Here we meet some eccentric secondary characters, and the hero, a Scottish artist who had married the innkeepers' daughter, now deceased. The story--and the unravelling of the mystery of Monty--virtually starts here. Ms Montefiore develops her books slowly but artfully; it's necessary to the final result: an intricate tale told by a master. And the sea is one of the main characters in this tale.

Great quick and fun read!
By August Reader
While this isn't an intellectual thriller, I found the story to be interesting and thoroughly enjoyable. There are twists and turns and the author knows how to leave you hanging at the end of a chapter so that you want to come back for more. I would recommend it as a light, quick read.

From Publishers Weekly
Author and "Bodyguard for Women's Hearts" Boom provides tough love that's as frank as it is old-fashioned, a style best demonstrated by the title of his first book, If You Want Closure in Your Relationship, Start with Your Legs. A former bad boy (read: working pimp) himself, Boom warns that "men are always looking for something to catch or shoot down," but locates the real problem in the woman "who refuses to let go... or change her bad habits." To that end, Boom spends much time chiding women for ignoring unwritten rules of gender relations like, "Girls follow, men lead." In a chapter called "Appearance" (Boom is nothing if not straightforward), the author starts with "Seven Important Beauty Basics Steps My Wife Uses" before moving on to tips like "Don't Wear Your Clothes Too Tight," keep your home clean and remember the small things: "I can't tell you how many good women I have turned down," Boom says, because of "something stupid" like "the way her toenails look." The assumption throughout is that it's far easier and more effective to play along with superficial attitudes (among men and women alike) than to change them; if you can embrace the game, and put up with some well-intentioned chauvinism, this is an able primer.

Good Advice and Breakdown of the Different Types of Suckahs
By Andrea T. Payne
I like this book. It was easy to read and conversational in tone. It was like a big brother or uncle giving me advice. I love how Big Boom jumps right into it and in Chapter 2 he breaks down the different types of suckahs from the Preacher Types to the Down Low men.

He challenges women to develop their self esteem and wait for Mr. Right instead of settling for Mr. Right Now. He also challenges women to investigate men more and warns of the dangers in letting men know where you live too soon, having sex too soon and of the dangers of exposing them to your children too soon.

The questions he lists in the Appendix are really deep and require you to do some soul searching in order to answer them. I think that those who really invest the time in doing this exercise will learn a great deal about themselves (possibly things they'd never considered before) and this will help you regarding your future choices in selecting a mate.

Bob and Weave
By D.J. Frazier
How To Duck A Suckah by Big Boom, a reformed pimp and self-professed body guard for women's hearts, gives advice on how to do just that; duck a suckah. While explaining the differences between suckahs and playas, Boom boasts of knowing the game because he lived it, though not regretfully. Who better to learn this type of skill from than someone who has played? Why not count them as lessons learned in order to fulfill His mission? Yes... His mission. Boom's passages preach empowerment, success, and happiness among women and their relationships. He gives common examples and suggest `tests' to detect suckahs and/or playas but not without giving thanks to his higher power for allowing him to be able to speak to women positively. Boom even provides tips on empowering soon-to-be women, what it means to be a lady, and tapping into internal strength during trying times.

While the effort was grand, Big Boom delivered a guide that can be most helpful to young women. Some of the techniques used by suckahs and playas that were described are common knowledge for most older and mature women. With Boom revealing his background, I felt a certain degree of trust in what he was writing but it lost some of its validity in a passage regarding abusive relationships. It is obvious there is limited knowledge on the subject as some of solutions given could create more danger for a victim of abuse. Still, there were very precious jewels between the covers. One of the most memorable of them for me is when he writes:

The graveyard is full of brand new gifts that have never been touched before. Make sure you open yours before you die.

This manual is from a big heart and you can tell in the conversational tone of the book and how he continually asks his readers to hear him out. People who are looking for a good pick-up-your-spirits guide and those who are looking for validation that they have a suckah on their hands would thoroughly enjoy this book.

Campy: The Two Lives of Roy Campanella, by Neil Lanctot

Neil Lanctot’s biography of Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella—filled with surprises—is the first life of the Dodger great in decades and the most authoritative ever published.

Born to a father of Italian descent and an African- American mother, Campanella wanted to be a ballplayer from childhood but was barred by color from the major leagues. He dropped out of school to play professional ball with the Negro Leagues’ Washington (later Baltimore) Elite Giants, where he honed his skills under Hall of Fame catcher Biz Mackey. Campy played eight years in the Negro Leagues until the major leagues integrated. Ironically, he and not Jackie Robinson might have been the player to integrate baseball, as Lanctot reveals. An early recruit to Branch Rickey’s “Great Experiment” with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Campy became the first African-American catcher in the twentieth century in the major leagues. As Lanctot discloses, Campanella and Robinson, pioneers of integration, had a contentious relationship, largely as a result of a dispute over postseason barnstorming.

Campanella was a mainstay of the great Dodger teams that consistently contended for pennants in the late 1940s and 1950s. He was a three-time MVP, an outstanding defensive catcher, and a powerful offensive threat. But on a rainy January night in 1958, all that changed. On his way home from his liquor store in Harlem, Campy lost control of his car, hit a utility pole, and was paralyzed below the neck. Lanctot reveals how Campanella’s complicated personal life (he would marry three times) played a role in the accident. Campanella would now become another sort of pioneer, learning new techniques of physical therapy under the celebrated Dr. Howard Rusk at his Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. As he gradually recovered some limited motion, Campanella inspired other athletes and physically handicapped people everywhere.

Based on interviews with dozens of people who knew Roy Campanella and diligent research into contemporary sources, Campy offers a three-dimensional portrait of this gifted athlete and remarkable man whose second life after baseball would prove as illustrious and courageous as his first.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Considered by many to be one of the greatest catchers in baseball history, Roy "Campy" Campanella is as interesting for what he did off the field as for his accomplishments within the baselines. And Lanctot, who has written extensively on the Negro Leagues, does justice to the tale. Born in 1921 in Philadelphia to a Sicilian father and African-American mother, Campanella saw his love for baseball pay off at an early age when he joined a club in the Negro Leagues at age 15. His early baseball years, which also took him to Mexico and Cuba, not only gave him exposure to the ugly racism of the time but also the experience that he needed for the Brooklyn Dodgers to sign him in 1946. From there, Campanella won the MVP award three times and led the Dodgers to an emotional World Series win in 1945 after so many previous failures against the Yankees. Lanctot truly captures the reader by delving well past the statistics, analyzing the rocky relationship with teammate Jackie Robinson and the horrific car accident in 1958 that left him paralyzed. Lanctot paints Campanella as an extremely likable person, yet doesn't hold back when speaking about subjects like Campanella's failed marriages and infidelity. Impeccably researched, it's a defining book on "the only person in baseball history about whom absolutely no one had a bad thing to say." (Apr.)

From Booklist
Dodger catching great Roy Campanella was born to an Italian American father and an African American mother in Philadelphia in 1921. The round, affable boy fell in love with baseball and was playing in the Negro Leagues at 15. Lanctot spins out Campy's story in exhaustive (occasionally exhausting) detail. Nearly every game he played is covered, and his tangled relationship with Jackie Robinson--friends, enemies, wary supporters--is treated with nuance. Campy's extraordinary abilities as a catcher are not only described but illustrated with anecdotes from specific games and seasons. Although Lanctot writes with a novelist's energy, sometimes the narrative veers into sentimentality, and he tends to soften such negatives as Campy's relations with his wives and neglect of some of his children. On the other hand, the man's courage in living fully a wheelchair-bound life after the car crash that ended his career makes a compelling tale (Campy's experience led to much-improved treatment for quadriplegics). Despite the extensive detail, Campy remains a bit elusive, beyond the captivating smile, the chirpy voice, and the great baseball instincts. --GraceAnne A. DeCandido

—Mark Hodermarsky, Cleveland Plain Dealer

"Campy is a fine behind-the-scenes recounting of baseball personalities and Campanella's limited but courageous life in a wheelchair."

—Dick Kreck, The Denver Post

"With the publication of Neil Lanctot’s superb biography, Campy, Roy Campanella is no longer the greatest player about whom there is no definitive biography."

—Allen Barra, The Newark Star-Ledger

"Lanctot is meticulous in putting together the first truly comprehensive biography of a baseball great."

—Chris Foran, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"Fans of the sport and that era will certainly find plenty to chew on in this solid biography."

Roy Campanella's Life--Both Pre and Post 1958
By Bill Emblom
Author Neil Lanctot has thoroughly researched this new book on former Brooklyn Dodgers' catcher Roy Campanella. Wherever possible the author interviewed former players such as Carl Erskine, Rocky Bridges, Bobby Bragan, Gene Hermanski, Monte Irvin, Andy Pafko, and several others. Teammates such as Clem Labine, Preacher Roe, and Johnny Podres died before he was able to conduct an interview. Other Dodger stalwarts passed on much prior to this time. Writers such as Roger Kahn, Stan Isaacs, and Rachel Robinson (widow of Jackie) were also interviewed. One well-known teammate chose not to be interviewed because he had been misquoted too often in the past while the son of another former Dodger said his father now charges $5,000 an hour to be interviewed.

Roy began his professional career with the Washington Elite Giants in 1937 and then continued on with the team when they moved to Baltimore the following year. Campy was blessed to have a wonderful mentor in Biz Mackey who provided him with the encouragement he needed. Later on Roy credited catcher Mike Sandlock, who later went on to play for the Philadelphia Phillies, for teaching him the finer points of catching. Sandlock had a nondescript major league career, but he left his mark on Campanella.

After spending time at both Nashua, New Hampshire, and Montreal in the Dodgers' minor league system Author Lanctot provides considerable detail regarding Campanella's career with the Dodgers. Campy won the National League's MVP award in the alternate years of 1951, 1953, and 1955. After suffering through a tough season in 1954 due to a hand injury he came back with a strong year again in 1955 while many thought Duke Snider should have won the award instead. Campy rejoiced in winning the 1955 MVP award knowing that his hand had healed and he felt more good years were to follow. We can't help but wonder if Campanella's presence in the lineup of the third game of the 1951 playoff game with the New York Giants would have had a different outcome had Roy been able to be in the lineup. As it was he was out with a leg injury, and replaced by Rube Walker.

The author enlightens us regarding the frosty relationship between Roy and Jackie Robinson which soured during a barnstorming tour due to unequal distribution of pay for each member. Robinson also wanted Campanella to take a more active part in fighting for equal rights for Negro players in hotels and restaurants which the ball club patronized while Campy expressed a thankful attitude for what he had rather than what he was denied. Their relationship was patched up in later years with Campanella taking a more active part in championing civil rights.

Campanella's career came to a sudden and violent end in January of 1958 when his rented car skidded on ice and slammed into a telephone pole and left him paralyzed. I remember the headline in The Sporting News which read "Swerve on A Curve: Player and Car Crashed." If Roy had been driving his own car with snow tires perhaps things may have turned out differently. It was quite an adjustment for this athletic catcher to now depend on others to attend to his basic needs. Author Lanctot states that Roy spent a long day working at his Harlem liquor store, followed by a visit to his mistress prior to going home. Being overly tired or having fallen asleep at the wheel the remainder of Roy's life changed in an instant. Roy's marriage to his second wife Ruth had already deteriorated with both individuals to blame. The book and movie version of "It's Good to be Alive" focus on Ruth's negative behavior, but Roy had his faults as well. The author explains in quite some detail the difficulties Roy experienced in his post-baseball life bound to his wheelchair.

You will find details regarding Roy's life not found in other publications regarding the storied Boys of Summer. Author Lanctot did his homework on this book, and it would be a worthy addition to any baseball fan's library.

Pulls No Punches: A Wonderful Book
By Joseph C. Sweeney
A treasure for all baseball fans, "Campy" is fascinating from start to finish. Very highly recommended.

Campanella was no saint, but a good, simple man who lived in amazing times and led a wonderful life. Unquestionably one of the greatest catchers ever, Campanella's career was shortened by, at first, racism, and then ultimately by a tragic car accident. His Brooklyn Dodger years provide the meat of the book, but there is much here to learn, even for fans who have, like myself, read all the Dodger books through the years.

Three-time MVP and feared linchpin of the Dodgers
By Barry Sparks
Although Roy Campanella was a three-time MVP (1951, 1953, and 1955) and feared linchpin of the Brooklyn Dodgers, it seems he is often overshadowed by Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider and other teammates.

Author Neil Lanctot does an excellent job of putting his career and contributions in perspective in this thoroughly researched and well-written book, which also shatters a number of myths, many of which Campy helped create.

Campanella joined the Bacharach Giants in the Negro Leagues in 1937 as a 15-year-old catcher for $25 a month. Campy refined his skills in the Negro Leagues under the tutelage of catching great Biz Mackey. He played for the Washington Elite Giants and the Baltimore Elite Giants and was named the MVP in the 1940 East-West All-Star Game at age 19. After his stint in the Mexican League in 1942, he said, "I knew I could make it in the majors."

The first third of the book covers Campy's career before he made his major league debut with the Dodgers on April 20, 1948.

The fact that Jackie Robinson was the first black in the majors instead of Campy seemed to be a source of resentment and conflict between the two. Campy had spent the 1946 season with Nashau and the 1947 season with Montreal, ignoring the Jim Crow rules, racial taunts and pressures on him without complaining or losing his cool. He showed he had the disposition, guts and talent to succeed in the majors.

Campy came into his own during the 1949 World Series when he earned the praises of his childhood heroes Bill Dickey and Mickey Cochrane. Dickey said, "Campanella is one of the smoothest receivers of his generation, has an excellent arm and is strong with the bat."

Lanctot chronicles the Dodgers' disappointing seasons in 1950 and 1951. Campy, who was injured and unable to play in the historic playoff game when New York Giants Bobby Thomson hit baseball's most famous homer, said, "It was the biggest disappointment of my career, not being able to play."

Lanctot spends a lot of time discussing the feud between Campy and Jackie Robinson, who went from being close friends to distant teammates. Campy and Robinson were very different. Campy loved baseball and had an aversion to controversy. He didn't see himself as a crusader. Robinson was aggressive, abrasive and opinionated.

Campanella was involved in a late-night car accident on Jan. 27, 1958, that left him paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Lanctot covers the many versions of really happened that night. An idealized version of Campy, complete with myths, was presented in his autobiography "It's Good to Be Alive," which was published in 1959.

Campy lived for nearly 35 years in a wheelchair, dying in 1993. His post-baseball career, including his many struggles and an ugly divorce, are covered in the book's final 60 pages.

This is an excellent, well-balanced biography of one of baseball's greatest players.
