On the run from the wrathful Prince of Wales, Jack Haines, Earl of Lambourne, is taken prisoner by a Highland laird who makes him an unusual offer: if Jack handfasts his niece, then his life will be spared. The old Highland custom -- a marriage lasting only a year and a day, unless both partners agree to make it a lifelong vow -- sounds preferable to Jack to being dragged to London in chains, and when he meets lovely Lizzie Beal, his dilemma starts to seem positively enjoyable. Until the hellion vents her fury...on him! Detesting the scandalous match that will end all her chances of making a respectable marriage, Lizzie can't abide living intimately with a fugitive nobleman bent on seducing her and then running off. But in teaching her the pleasures of a wife's duties, Jack sparks within them both a passion that will make him wish he could stay with Lizzie for much longer than a year and a day.

After rumors (untrue, not that it matters) naming Jack Haines as one of Princess Caroline’s lovers begin to surface in London, the earl packs his bags and heads for Scotland one step ahead of Prince George’s men. While on the run, Jack becomes the “guest” of Highland laird Carson Beal, who gives him a choice: either agree to a handfasting with Elizabeth Drummond Beal, or Carson will turn Jack over to his pursuers. Marriage or death? The choice seems obvious until Jack gets to know his intractable, insufferable, and irresistible new wife. London’s signature nuanced characters, subtle wit, and elegantly sexy style blend flawlessly in the second captivating installment of her fabulous Regency-set Scandalous series. --John Charles

Entertaining Scottish Saga

I love Julia London stories and I think that can be a blessing and a curse -(it's the same with Lisa Kleypas). I have such high expectations for her books, and as a result, I find myself comparing Julia London to Julia London.
I am usually captivated by London's stories from page one, but this one didn't pull me in so quickly. I found it an entertaining read that got better as the story progressed. The romance got much better. I had a hard time feeling the connection between the hero and the heroine in the beginning and I felt as though I didn't know the heroine as well as I needed to. I never wanted to put the book down and not finish. It was more like I was reading an interesting book but I just wasn't enthralled by it. Although the latter half of the book was much better in my opinion, the resolution of the problem in the end was a little abrupt. There was no explanation of what took place that brought about the conclusion - the reader was told things were getting worse, not better. Also, the reader is not told very much from the heroine's POV of what she was doing and thinking during those final two weeks. So I was left with a little, "hmmm, okay...". There had been such an exhaustive, expensive effort on behalf of the prince, yet we are told very little in the end of what transpired to get to the conclusion...(bear with me, I'm trying to avoid any spoilers).
I liked the hero and his struggles but I also often wondered that if he were so fabulously wealthy, why did he not at least buy the heroine some dang peat so everyone in the house would not freeze. I was just confused by some of it - what I felt were a lot of loose ends. At the same time, I did not doubt his love for her. I guess that's why I rate this a "liked," not "loved." I believe there are some who will really like this book and others who won't. I bet we will see a mixed bag in the reviews. I don't consider it is one of Julia London's best books, but she certainly will remain an auto buy for me.

Wanted to like but...
By Jody Allen
I usually enjoy Ms London's historicals but this one I should have passed on. To begin with I was barely willing to overlook the overused, and historically inaccurate, at least for this period, plot devise of a handfast marriage with its silly a year and a day common to Scottish romances. Sadly that quickly ended when she had the handfast ceremony overseen by a vicar, not bloody likely; vicar being Church of England, not Church of Scotland. She would have been better off making it a Catholic priest. Any marriage/betrothal ceremony overseen by a clergyman and then consummated would have been a legal marriage by Scottish law. A done deal, with no escape clause of a year and a day.
But one could over look all this in the name of fiction if the story was a compelling read... this one isn't. There is no sexual tension, and when they share their first intimacy, well can we say YAWN. The pace was so tortoise slow with a heroine who wasn't very likable unless she was getting her own way. She comes off as rather immature for a spinster of 3 and 20, cocksure one minute and then a shy innocent ( not appealing to this reader). I really wanted to like Jack but I felt sorry for the guy, he deserved a way better story and a better heroine than this one. The plot was stagnant much of the time and never seemed to create a journey worth taking for the reader. This one falls far short of the quality of her previous books. As it was part of the 'scandal" series I had hoped that there would have been a stronger connection to the people of the first book, which would have helped this weak plot. She shouldn't have bothered with the epilogue, it did nothing to make the book or the series more palatable.
Julia London fans may want to think twice about this one and if you haven't read her before this is not the one to start with. Try her backlist, especially her Highland books. This one was too rushed and too generic for what we readers expect from Julia London.

while it was really very well written,(she is a good writer) to me the whole story was boring boring boring, and unfortunately I could not finish it. I wanted to like it, but there was nothing there to hold my attention.
