Another winner for St. Claire!
By P. Thompson
I love Roxanne St. Claire's books. A friend bought me one two Christmas' ago. I then had to go buy her others at full price. That is not normal for me, I usually shop at used book stores, but St. Claire is not that well know YET.

What I like about her writing style is that her characters are strong but easy to indentify with as they have vulnerabilities. I would highly recommend all of her books.

The only reason I did not give this one a five is because I was getting a little bored with all things Mayan. A little too much history for my own personal taste.

Red Hot Reunion, by Bella Andre

The last time Jason saw Emma Holden, she crushed his heart. As college students, they were opposites in every way except for their thrilling, unpredictable passion. But deep down Emma was very proper, and in their senior year she blindsided Jason by dumping him for a wealthy jock and a dull, safe life.

Now it's ten years later, and if living well is the best revenge, Jason has done so in spades--he's a hunky celebrity chef with a hit TV show and all the women he wants. But he's interested in only one woman--Emma. And at their college reunion, he cooks up a wicked payback for her betrayal: teasing her with desperate desire, taunting her with the best sex of her life, just to see her fall.

Yet Emma has an agenda of her own, and teasing and temptation are just what she's hungry for. The "good girl" is now a daring, sensual woman eager to raise the sexual stakes, and she's hot for the most wildly erotic adventures he can dish out. Now who's turning the tables on whom?

Not so Hot!
By M. Johnson
I loved Bella Andre's first two books. I thought the sex was exciting and the love stories sweet. In "Red Hot Reunion" I could tell that the author really wanted to make a point of how in love the couple were in college and how much their love was fated to be. But frankly, the sex was all very basic stuff and not near as spicey and erotic as Bella's "Tempt Me, Taste Me, Touch Me." That book I loved.

If you want a sweet love story, you will likely really enjoy this book. If you also wanted some racey love scenes that raise the temperature to a boil, then this is not your book.

I can't stand a pathetic heroine!
By Manatee
I hate romances where the heroine is weak, pathetic, and humorless and that's what this book offers in spades. At 32, Emma has no mind of her own, no spine, no wit, no brains, no personality, and she spends all her time pining over Jason, who she jilted in college and laments she never had sex with. SO much so, all she appears to have done with her life in the 10 years since is fantasize about having sex with him. Constantly. Lame. Seriously, I don't know what there is to recommend her.

When Emma and Jason do meet again at their college reunion, he's now a successful famous chef and can have any woman he wants. But apparently, he too has been pining over Emma for the past 10 years, but wants revenge for her having broken his heart. He walks into the reunion, basically says 1 sentence to her which is on the order of: "let's go outside and f---". And she complies eagerly like a dopey puppy. Throughout the book, she and Jason barely converse (other than sex talk) or even interact all that much, other than to have sex. And as a previous reviewer stated, it's pretty basic sex. Or maybe it just felt that way because I didn't care about any of the characters. Actually, the most entertaining & therefore welcome character, is her best friend Kate. At least she has a personality and for as little as she's in the book, she's the best drawn character, which isn't saying much. Emma's parents and ex-husband are charichatures, and you really have no sense of why Emma is under their control or why she makes no decisions about her own life. Except for the sudden decision to be Jason's sex kitten, no matter what, for the majority of the book - apparently a decision out of character for her.

The very first chapter starts right out of the gate with a mild bondage sex scene between the 2 main characters (which turns out to be Emma's fantasy)that's sort of raunchy via the language and the mention of weird details like: "His 9 rock hard inches" which made me laugh out loud and immediately made me think of those penthouse forum letters (or the like) where wishful thinking men always "drop" that claim into their stories. Plus, we don't know anything about these characters yet, so there's no sexual tension or romance to it. It was a turn off. Ironically, there's so much sex in this book and so little substance, it got boring and I started to skim the sex scenes. Unfortunately, the story & plot didn't hold enough drama or conflict either, nor did the characters engage or leap off the page either. Lots of time spent in the main characters heads rehashing the same old angst over and over again. And with very little interesting dialogue between characters to supplement,it was hardly rivetting. I actually read this book in about 2 hours - not because it was a page turner, but because it's a skimmer. 277 pages, big print.

Good idea; not so great delivery
By Tracy Vest
Emma and Jason were a mismatched couple from the start - she a debutante and he a guy from the wrong side of the tracks on scholarship. After a lot of pressure from her parents, she takes the easy way out and marries within her station, always wishing she had saved herself for Jason. She gets a second chance with him when they both attend their 10 year college reunion. Jason is a successful chef with his own TV show and vineyard - and he is out for revenge. He wants to make Emma fall for him again and then rip the rug out from under her like she did a decade earlier. After a torrid encounter outside at the reunion and she immediately feels love; he flees. Not satisfied with the outcome, she shows up at his Napa vineyard and the two embark of an affair where he calls the shots, and she tows the line. Will Jason be able to forget the past and build a new future with Emma?

Andre's latest spicy offering trades good plotting for an overabundance of sex. Other than the shared past and overactive libidos, this couple has nothing in common, and the constant sexual encounters just get really boring after awhile, as well as Emma's lack of a spine. A secondary romance for her friend Kate and his sous chef are promising, but again not fully developed. Andre has done much better - I loved her first novel "Take Me." This was a disappointment in comparison, and could have been so much more had the plot been developed, instead it is sadly just average.

Chapter 3

Back to School

Kim Matheny's alarm screamed in her ears. Although she knew it was time to get up, the thirty-five year-old kindergarten teacher lay motionless, head still swimming from the recent turn of events. It had been just seven days since she received the devastating news.

She had cancer.

She'd spent the previous week away from her classroom in a whirlwind of doctor visits, Internet research, and life-ordeath decisions. Today was Monday, and she was due back at school. Although she loved her students dearly, she could hardly bring herself to get out of bed, let alone face their questions about why she'd been gone, what was cancer, was she going to die.

Kim forced herself to sit up, knowing she had to keep moving to ward off the looming depression over her diagnosis. She never thought this could happen to her, reminded herself that no one ever does, and wondered how the kids would handle her illness.

Maybe another teacher would be better for them. No, I'd miss them too much. But what if teaching is more than I can handle right now? I need their cheery faces and sweet hugs. She plopped back down, thoughts racing and panic rising. What if they've already gotten used to the substitute and don't care if I come back? Kids forget quickly. Maybe I don't matter as much as I think -

“Stop it!” She scolded herself aloud. “Get a grip.” She slammed the snooze button again and let her arm just drop onto the nightstand. Her hand landed on a colorful note she had received the day before.

She picked it up and unfolded it again. The drawing was of a rainbow, a bright yellow sun, and two stick figures. The larger one was labeled “Ms. Mateny” and the smaller one “Me.” One figure's arm reached out toward the other's, and the two lines were joined at the bottom with one large, round scribble representing the holding of hands. Then, in purple crayon, “You briten my day, Ms. Mateny. I miss you. Come back soon.” It was signed “Luv, Macy.” Tears filled Kim's eyes. My kids need me. She got out of bed to get ready for school.

On the drive to Southwood Elementary, Kim thought of numerous ways to greet her class. Her usual song, “It's a beautiful day, it's a beautiful day, the birds are singing, let's shout hooray,” didn't seem fitting. The sun was shining and the birds were singing, but she just didn't think she could form those words on her lips today.

The thirty-minute drive and her walk to the classroom seemed to drift by in a fog. Kim usually was in high gear before class, adjusting the weather chart and setting out the first activity to make sure everything was ready when the students arrived. Today she sat at her desk, perfectly still except for the distracted tapping of her pencil on a stack of papers.

“Hi, Kim.” The sympathetic tone belonged to Sarah Richardson, who taught the first-grade class across the hall. “The children will be here shortly. If you need anything today, please come and get me.”

Kim looked at her friend nervously. “I don't know if I can do this.”

Sarah nodded assurance. “You'll make it. And like I said, I'm here if you need me.”

The kind support nearly shattered Kim's resolve not to cry, but she swallowed hard and blinked to clear her eyes.

“Thanks.”

One by one the children began arriving. Samuel, always eager for school, came running in first. “Ms. Matheny, what are we doing today?” It didn't seem he'd even noticed her week-long absence.

Kim was disappointed but tried not to let it show. “We have a lot planned for today. I'm so glad you're excited about school,” she said with all the enthusiasm she could muster. Her one buoy - the special place she thought she had in her students' hearts - was sinking fast. Had the children even missed her at all?

Nathan arrived next, clutching his mother's pant leg as he used to do. Kim had made such progress with him, but now he treated her like a stranger again. “He was like this all week last week,” Nathan's mother said. “Oh, Nathan.” Kim gently rubbed his back, trying to ease her own anxiety as much as his. Had she lost all the ground she had gained since the beginning of the school year? She just didn't have the heart to start over. “I'm so glad you're here. I sure need my little helper today.” Her voice quavered a little, and she stopped, afraid she'd be completely engulfed by discouragement.

Then, suddenly, Nathan released his mother's leg and turned for his teacher to pick him up. As Kim hugged him tightly, he whispered, “I'm so glad your back.”

Next came Sadie. She didn't say a word, but her dimples flashed as she embraced her teacher shyly before scurrying to her desk.

The rest of the class had arrived, but where was Macy? She usually arrived about twenty minutes early to help Kim by setting out scissors or crayons or whatever she asked her to do. Macy hadn't missed a day of school all year. She loved being there and always had a smile to share with a friend. Kim suddenly realized just how much she'd missed Macy's good cheer during the most difficult week of her life. She needed Macy to be there today.

Just as Kim was calling the class to attention, Macy walked into the classroom, slowly, with her head down. Not even a hint of the smile Kim so desperately needed. Her spirits sank to a new low. Was Macy not even happy to have her back? Near tears, Kim forced herself to try to sound cheery.

“Well, hello Macy!”

Macy jerked to attention, looking up for the first time since she'd entered the room.

“Ms. Matheny! It's you!” Macy squealed with delight, running to squeeze her teacher's leg as tightly as she could. “Of course, it's me,” Kim giggled, bending to return the hug and thank Macy for her wonderful note.

“I didn't think you were coming back.” Macy's eyes were as round and bright as the big yellow sun she had drawn on her picture.

“Yes, Macy, I'm back. I need you little munchkins. Did you miss me?” Kim asked hopefully.

Macy made a face and answered almost indignantly. “Yes! Who else would teach us to count, and write, and color?”

“Who'd teach us those silly songs?” another student joined in earnestly.

“Who would tell us who gets to be the line leader or the door holder? That other teacher didn't know anything about that,” Samuel added.

“I'm sure your substitute teacher was very good,” Kim protested - but not too strongly. She was enjoying this outpouring of affection.

“Not near as good as you,” Sadie countered.

“Yeah,” Macy said adamantly. “And no one can give as good hugs as you!”

At this the entire class ran to the front of the classroom, nearly tackling their beloved teacher as they jostled to get one of her warm hugs and to give one in return.

“Well!” Sarah interrupted from the doorway, smiling approvingly at her friend. “I guess you have everything under control.” Kim laughed. “I don't know about that. But I know this is exactly where I needed to be today. I think we'll be just fine.”

“I know you will,” Sarah responded confidently.

I got this book for a friend who needed a little pick-me-up and some encouragement. She was very pleased and enjoyed reading it it. It is a small hardcover with a nice sleeve. Measures about 5" x 7" and less than an inch thick. Makes for a great small present that will make anyone smile.

Camille

If my mother caught me, it would be all over.

I could see it now. All my friends, crying their eyes out. Even the haters would come out, pretending the world wouldn't be the same without me in it. Everyone would talk about what a shame it was that I had to go so soon. Yep, I had played out all the possibilities in my mind.

I wiped the sweat that was trickling down the side of my face. I wasn't sure if it was the humidity from the hot Houston night air or my nerves working overtime, but I was sweating like I'd been dancing in a Nelly video.

I bit my lip and looked around my bedroom. I was sitting on the window sill, trying to decide whether I should climb back in and take my butt to bed like I was supposed to or do what my heart was telling me to do and go meet my man.

I looked at the picture of my boo on my nightstand and knew that it was a no-brainer. Love wins every time.

We'd taken that picture six months ago in one of those dollar booths at the mall. It was so cute and we both looked so happy. That was the last day we'd been together before Keith had gotten arrested.

But he was out now, and was begging me to come meet him.

Did I mention how cute he was?

I know my mother would not understand anything about me leaving the house at two in the morning. If she woke up, I'd just have to deal with it.

My baby is worth it.

I eased over the sill and lowered myself down, almost landing in the bushes right outside my bedroom window. I paused, brushing the leaves off my Baby Phat jeans and pink shirt before taking off down the street.

I was trying to sprint to Keith's car but my strappy sandals slowed me down. It would be just my luck that a neighbor noticed me running down the street. Lord knows I wished they'd be entrepreneurs and get their own business so they could stay out of mine.

I made it to the entrance to my neighborhood in less than five minutes. A big smile crossed my face when I spotted my boo standing at the corner, leaning against a blue Monte Carlo.

"I can't believe it's you," I said as I threw my arms around his neck.

"In the flesh, baby. I was beginning to think you weren't going to come." Keith smiled back at me, looking cuter than ever with his big Afro, signature Sean John jeans and big white T-shirt. His golden brown skin was smooth and his body seemed even more in shape than I remembered.

"I'm sorry, but you know I had to sneak out of the house." I tried my best to sound sweet, but I think my voice sounded like I'd been sucking helium or something. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that, but I just got out and I called you as soon as I did. You look good, girl." He fingered one of my shoulder-length, jet-black spiral curls. I was glad I had made sure my hair was in place and my makeup was just right. I smiled at his compliment.

"Whoa." Keith leaned back and stared at me. "I knew something was different. You got your braces off."

I used to hate those stupid braces, but I was grateful now that my father had insisted that I get them. Not a day passed without someone telling me how pretty my smile was.

"You like?" I asked.

"Mm-hmm, but how could I have missed that? You know those things used to cut my lips all up," Keith joked.

I playfully hit him in the shoulder. He laughed as we climbed in the car and took off.

"So, why didn't you call me ahead of time, when you found out you were getting out?" I asked as we made our way onto the freeway.

"Man, I just found out. It was a big surprise. But I'm here now, baby. And with you, so that's all that matters." Keith looked over at me, squeezed my hand and smiled. "Girl, I missed you so much," he said.

I couldn't help but blush. Me and Keith had only been together four months before he went to jail, but I was madly in love with him and had no doubt he felt the same.

"So what happened? They caught the real carjackers?" I asked as I put my feet up on the dash.

"Baby, let's not talk about all that." Keith looked at my feet like they were the cutest things he'd ever seen. He shook himself out of the trance watching me seemed to be putting him in. "That place wasn't no joke. And I'm just happy to be out. You know I'm not a criminal." He took a deep breath, then stroked my cheek. "I missed you," he said again.

"I missed you, too." I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. "Hey, whose car is this, anyway?" I asked as I pulled myself away.

"My cousin Jerome's. I told him I had to come see my baby and he let me use it." Keith flashed another smile. "Did you bring the key?"

I reached in my jeans pocket and pulled out a single key. "Got it right here." I grinned. If my mother didn't kill me for sneaking out, she sure 'nuff was going to wring my neck if she ever found out what I was about to do.

"Cool, just tell me exactly how to get there. I know you said it's in Third Ward."

I dropped the key back in my pocket and leaned back in the seat and gave him the directions to my grandmother's house.

"Don't worry about a thing," Keith said. His calm voice eased my fears and I closed my eyes.

"You're going to go down to the third stop sign," I said once we'd reached our exit. "It's the first house on the right after the stop sign."

"Are you sure no one is going to come to your grandma's house?" Keith asked as we made the turn.

"I told you, I'm sure. My grandmother is in a nursing home and no one is ever at her house. I come by twice a week after school to water her plants, check on the cat and make sure everything is okay."

"Why don't y'all just sell it if your grandmother isn't coming back to it?"

"My mom was raised in this house and she'd never even think about selling it." And she would die if she knew I had a boy up in there. Stop thinking about your mother, I snapped to myself.

I turned my attention back to Keith as he flashed that lopsided smile that had captured my heart. "Well, I'm glad you didn't sell it, because it's the perfect place for us to spend some time together," he said as he played with my hair.

I giggled and squeezed his hand.

"I also know if I'm with you I won't have to deal with Peanut and 'nem. You know they're worried that I might snitch on them," Keith said.

The smile left my face at the mention of Peanut's name. Keith was a good guy when I met him a year ago. Six months after we met he told me he didn't want to be just friends anymore, he wanted to be my boyfriend.

At the time, Keith was a straight A and B student. Then, right after we got together, he started hanging around his no-good cousin, Peanut. Then all of a sudden Keith started doing things he didn't have no business doing, like skipping school and riding around in stolen cars.

I'd cried like crazy when Keith got arrested. My mom didn't want me talking to him anymore, so I had to sneak down to the jail to visit him. I wasn't sure what to think about the whole situation, but when Keith told me that wasn't him on the Wal-Mart surveillance tape carjacking a little old lady, I believed him. After all, despite what my mother said, it wasn't like he was some thug or something. We both went to a nice high school. We both got decent grades and he had never been in any real trouble. Keith tried to play the bad boy to be more like Peanut, but never in a million years would he resort to carjacking.

However, that's just what the police said he did. That seventy-eight-year-old lady had to be in the hospital for three weeks. The police caught Keith shortly after she was hospitalized. Someone had called Crime Stoppers and tipped them off.

"Right here." I pointed toward a huge yellow house on the right.

"Wow, that's tight," Keith said as he pulled the car into the driveway.

All that had happened three days ago. Since then I'd been coming by my grandmother's place after school every day. I'd even skipped school today, even though this was just the second week of school, and came straight here so we could spend all day together. It was days like today that I was thankful I had my own car. That way I could leave school with no problem and get home before my mother suspected a thing.

I'd surprised Keith by waking him up to the smell of frying bacon. I'd made a big breakfast, and even though I dropped shells in the scrambled eggs, Keith ate it like it was the best thing in the world.

We'd spent the day watching movies and just hanging out. After a long nap, I braided his hair while he played a PlayStation game his cousin had brought him.

"Baby, I like it." Keith rubbed his hand over his head as he checked out his hairstyle in the mirror. "I didn't know you could braid like this."

I smiled. Truth be told, I didn't like the braided hairstyle on him. But since he wanted that style . . ."Just one of my many talents," I joked.

"I don't know what I would do without you," Keith said, flashing a cute dimple at me. "Tell you what. I know you're tired of being stuck up in this house. Let's roll out. I need to go by Sharpstown and pick up a couple of outfits. Then maybe we can grab something to eat or something."

I looked at my watch. It was after three and school was just about to get out, so nobody would ask questions about me being in the mall. But that meant I'd have to find another lie to tell my mother. Oh well, I'll just say I had tutorials after school or something. "That sounds like a good idea."

"Let me hit the bathroom, grab my shoes and we can head out," Keith said as he leaned in and kissed me on the forehead. I loved the way his lips felt against my skin.

I watched Keith walk off toward the bathroom. If you had told me a week ago I'd be as happy as I was at this very moment, I would've told you you were on some serious drugs.

I knew I was being all giddy and stuff, so I tried to shake it off. I looked around for my grandmother's cat because I knew it was time for the mangy thing to eat.

"Garfield, where are you?" I looked throughout the house before knocking on the bathroom door. "Hey, Keith, you seen Garfield?"

"Yeah, the cat kept rubbing against the front door like it wanted to go out, so I let it out," Keith ...

Learning Lessons from Drama
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Back with her signature style of using life's drama to teach lessons, Reshonda Tate Billingsley has created another great book titled NOTHING BUT DRAMA. This time around she is focusing on the younger generation with a new teen series which uses lessons from the Ten Commandments as its backdrop. This first novel uses the theme of honoring parents.

NOTHING BUT DRAMA focuses on four teenaged girls who meet when they become members of a community service group called Good Girlz. When they first meet, they seem to have nothing in common. Camille is at the meeting because she was court ordered after being arrested for hiding her boyfriend, who escaped from jail. Angel attends out of desperation, hoping to win the money being offered as a door prize. Alexis only joins to fulfill a community service requirement for another organization she belongs to, and Jasmine comes to the meetings because the leader, Rachel, insists. However, the girls become friends, creating a bond which helps each get through the drama that comes their way. All four girls soon learn that they can depend on each other, rather than try to fight their battles alone. The girls, especially Camille, also learn that honoring their parents can make life much easier for them.

Billingsley may be writing a teen series, but NOTHING BUT DRAMA is one that even adults can enjoy. Although the focus in this book appears to be more on Camille and Angel, all of the characters are well-rounded and developed so the reader becomes interested in their lives and the situations they face. Billingsley's novel is also well-paced and an easy read. She tackles issues of teenage sex, pregnancy, running away, and bullying without the story becoming too complicated or confusing. This book is good for entertaining purposes or for use in a book group for discussion. Either way, NOTHING BUT DRAMA lives up to its title and its purpose to teach a lesson.

Good Girlz Power
By Angelia Vernon Menchan
Nothing But Drama by ReShonda Tate Billingley is a wonderful coming-of-age story. The book focuses on four teen-aged girls. Camille is a good girl who finds herself in a relationship with a bad boy. Jasmine is a larger-than-life girl who expects to be attacked, so her way is to attack first. Alexis is a rich girl, who appears to have it all, but is hiding a family secret. Angel finds herself in a situation she promised her mom she would never be in, so running away seems her only option. These girls could not be more different. However, the one common ground they have is they are all convinced their mothers are clueless.

The young women end up participating in a community service group sponsored by a local church, called the Good Girlz. The group is led by Miss Rachel, the pastor's wife, who has a less than perfect past of her own. Her focus is to show the young ladies that they have options, while providing spiritual guidance. Through a series of meetings, the girls bond reluctantly becoming friends. With Miss Rachel's guidance, the Good Girlz discover how to depend on others and to accept responsibility for their actions. They also discover that mothers just might know something.

Nothing But Drama is a wonderful read for any age group. I strongly recommend this book to teens, parents and mentors.

Looking forward to the next book in this series
By K. L. Burchett
Rachel, the first lady of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, founded Good Girlz Club, and Camille, Angel, Jasmine and Alexis all have different reasons for becoming a part of this community service group.

Honor Thy Mother and Father is the theme of this first book in Billingsley's Christian teen series. Camille seemed to be the only one who had a real problem obeying the Fifth Commandment, while it appeared that Angel (hurting & confused), Jasmine (angry & defensive) and Alexis (misunderstood) just needed their parents to show them love. Camille was disrespectful toward her mother, causing this hard-working woman all kinds of stress, throughout most of the story, and it took a life-threatening situation for her to appreciate the one parent she had left.

Teen sex & pregnancy, the mistakes girls can make when it comes to so-called boyfriends, running away, knowing how to recognize true friendship, taking a good parent for granted - all of these issues were addressed in this interesting, entertaining read.

This one was definitely a page-turner, and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough while reading Chapter 21! I plan to buy the other books in this series very soon.

Past Secrets, by Cathy Kelly

They all hide secrets that won't go away....

From the outside, the welcoming, garden-adorned houses of Summer Street are the picture of Irish charm. But on the inside, unexpected and heartbreaking secrets swirl. At house number thirty-two, hardworking, single-mother Faye Reid conceals the truth about her marriage from her fiery daughter, Amber. But Amber, a budding artist, also hides something from her all-too-trusting mother: a relationship with a rock star hopeful for whom she plans to throw away her future. And at number forty-eight, Maggie Maguire arrives at her childhood home to help her sick mother, a welcome distraction from the life she left behind and the startling secret she's hiding -- from herself.

And only become harder to keep...

At thirty-four Summer Street, wise and kind Christie Devlin has the remarkable ability to see into the lives and hearts of others -- and may have the answers when her neighbors' carefully hidden secrets bubble to the surface. But when Christie's own past comes back to haunt her -- posing a threat to her picture-perfect marriage -- this time the answers aren't as clear.

From Publishers Weekly
Kelly's ninth novel, a cross-generational contemporary romance set in Ireland, is packed with high drama and the emotion to match. At 60, Christie Devlin and her peaceful home and garden are the heart of Dublin's picturesque Summer Street. But when a surprising nook of art teacher Christie's past is unearthed, the 30 fulfilling years Christie has spent with her husband, James, and their family threaten to unravel. Her neighbors, meanwhile, have their own crises to attend to: single mom Faye Reid is horrified when her daughter, Amber, drops out of college to travel with her musician boyfriend, prompting Faye to follow her to try to prevent her from making the same mistake Faye made in her youth. Wounded by an awkward adolescence and a cheating boyfriend, 30-year-old Maggie Maguire wishes she could stop letting her past hold her back from self-acceptance as she returns home to care for her ailing mother. If Kelly's sins are too many peripheral characters, an uneasy transition into Amber's teenage voice and meandering passages that could have been edited out, then they are easily forgiven. Kelly's evocation of mother-daughter relationships shines, and her handle on romance storytelling combined with her characters' feel-good, empowering evolutions make this a satisfying novel. (Jan.)

Typical Kelly...
By Chic
I have read numerous Cathy Kelly novels, and this does not disappoint in following her typical recipe. That does not make it any less good or worth reading, but it is starting to indicate to me that it may be time for a change. All of her books center around a group of women with different issues (in Past Secrets everyone has some sort of secret) that are somehow either strongly connected at the beginning or will be by the end. This was an entertaining book, with good characters that were all more or less likeable, even if you wanted to kick some of them for their stupidity at times. It was, however, very predictable. I do want to stress that in spite of its predictability, it is still good book, and fun to read. It isn't Kelly's best effort in my opinion, but if you know what you are getting into, you will not be disappointed - it is a solid story.

Entertaining, intelligent and FUNNY!
By Sissel M. Østdahl
I have read several reviews of Cathy Kelly's books. Most of them are positive but then there are those who say that this is not important/serious literature. Or that it is nice for a boring flight or when you are half asleep on a sunny beach.
People in her books are too nice, problems are mostly solved in the end, it's relaxing reading - in other words, happy readers have a too good time for Kelly to be credited as an excellent author. Excellent authors are deep and brooding, they seem to say. Well, at least that is how I interpret it.

Personally, I love opera, but I must say it would have been nice if an opera could at times have a happy ending. The music and the beautiful voices would not have been less entoxicating with a romantic story ending in a huge wedding and pure bliss.

But back to Caty Kelly and her last "Secrets". A purely wonderful, intelligent and not the least FUNNY book. My partly miserable love life is usually not my favourite topic, but when Kelly says "in order to get over a man, you have to get under another", I just crack up. And whatever misery might have been, suddenly seems much less important. Humour is a fantastic healer. Also the following proclamation "We screwed up, but hey, we are still here club" adds attractive upwards wrinkles and a guaranteed longer life. It's great art to make people laugh. It's also great art to write about life. Life as it is for most people.

Cathy Kelly writes beautifully. OK, most of her main characters are likeable with the jerks/bitches looming in the background. But even the nicest heroines/heroes are no saints. Like all of us, they have made their mistakes, have been - and may still be - unhappy. Tragedies are hidden in their lives and there are lessons still to be learnt and problems to be sorted out.

Behind lace curtains and blue painted doors in idyllic Summer Street, life is real and varied and challenging. But in telling her story in that warm, funny way of hers, Cathy Kelly makes it entertaining and highly enjoyable. Summer Street and its residents come to life in front of me where I'm sitting at the café with a latte and seeing it all.

Since I read her first book, I have read them all, and never once have I been disappointed. Cathy Kelly is right up there in the league with Maeve Binchy, Patricia Scanlan and Rosamunde Pilcher. Normally, I don't like to compare but this is where Kelly has placed herself in her short career.

Especially if you are feeling a bit down, try an injection of Cathy Kelly's sunny sparkle. Irresistible!

No puedo quejarme. He alcanzado mis objetivos y también mis límites.

Y si construyes, todavía no construiste tu mejor edificio. Si te dedicas a los negocios, todavía no has firmado tu mejor contrato.

¡No!

Te eligió, a propósito, Dios Todopoderoso.

Vuelve a intentarlo.

¿Y si no funciona, qué harás?»

Estas palabras negativas podrán perseguirte y ahogar ...

Content was Incomplete
By Mike Taylor
As a native english speaker, I purchased this CD to help brush up on my spanish and get the native accent, Unfortunately, when following the book I was disappointed to learn that a lot of the content had been dropped. Compare the book Lo Mejor De Ti and the english Become A Better You to this CD and you will see that about 50 percent of the book content had been dropped, thus leaving me shortchanged on the purchase. A rather dirty trick! Im sure no one expected a serious spanish student to compare this CD to the book, but behold, someone did! Any CD bearing the same name, the same face, and the same title should be equivelent to the same book, Missing 50% (or more) of the overall content is unacceptable! I wonder if a lawsuit is in order.

Not a total loss, but clearly not what I paid for. The content loss was staggering! No one should ever be expected to pay for a full product only to receive half. Wouldnt you agree?

LOVING IT
By M. Gonzalezvidela
I was going to some harsh times and this inspiration has really motivated me to get up and keep my joy, no matter what, we're living some hard days, with lay offs, foreclosures and the possibility of the planet destruction, but we can change all of this by just changing the way we walk around this life.
I remember this movie I saw and some people where in a cabin in a very peaceful town, and they went to town for a reunion and they needed to go back to the cabin so one guy says take my vehicle, the keys are on, and they say, do you leave the keys on? yes of course, so that if anyone in town needs it they can use it, don't you people do it like that in Chicago? imagine if we could all live like that, how idillic, but possible? it's up to us.

For the poor, hardworking citizens of the Confederacy’s fringe worlds, the Guild Wars have exacted a huge toll. Swayed by the promise of financial rewards, a new batch of recruits joins the fight alongside a slew of neurally resocialized criminals—and a few dubious military leaders. Eighteen-year-old Jim Raynor, full of testosterone and eager to make things right at home, ships off to boot camp and finds his footing on the battlefield, but he soon discovers that the official mission is not what he’s really fighting for.

For the first time ever, StarCraft enthusiasts will learn the origins of the enduring friendship between the young upstart Jim Raynor and the streetwise soldier Tychus Findlay. Watch as they battle on the front lines of a fierce interplanetary war and bear witness to the Confederacy’s rank corruption—corruption so reprehensible that it rains immeasurable death and destruction upon the government’s own people.

Heaven's Devils review
By Joshua W. Tunis
Heaven's Devils was given to me as a birthday gift. My sister (who picked out the book) knows that I've been an avid Starcraft fan since the game's original release in 1998, and also knows that I've been anxiously awaiting for Starcraft II to be released. The thought of buying this for myself hadn't crossed my mind, so when the time came to open presents, I was shocked to see this sitting in front of me. To be honest, I was a little apprehensive that I might not enjoy the book, because I hadn't read a Starcraft novel before, nor had I heard of William C. Dietz. However, after reading it from front to back, I can say that my initial thoughts weren't the correct ones.

I enjoyed the book so much, I felt compelled to write a review. This book did not disappoint; infact quite the opposite. Part of me had always wondered who Jim Raynor really was, where he came from, and how he came to be. This book explains it, and also explains a whole lot about who Tychus Findlay is, and the type of character he is. Heaven's Devils was definitely a great read. It's a tad over 300 pages long, and I finished it in about 4 days, on and off, reading a little each day. Which says a lot, if you consider the fact that I'm a slow reader compared to the rest of the population. It was hard to put the book down and I couldn't wait to see how it ended.

It had action and adventure, suspense, and some mystery. It was very descriptive. From the feelings and emotions of each individual character, to a great story line where I could imagine the scene unfold in my head as it took place. The book was very thorough, and it explained everything. It's not all combat and it's not all talk. The book had a great vibe, and it works very well. I'd go so far as to say that someone unfamiliar with the Starcraft universe could pick it up, give it a read and love it, and not feel like they're missing out on something. Parts of the book made you laugh, made you cheer, made you feel involved, and made you wish some things hadn't happened.

I definitely recommend this book to any Starcraft fan, to anyone who is familiar the Blizzard universe, or even to anyone who isn't. You'll like it, I promise!

Lets just say that I'm very happy with my birthday gift! :)

*By the way, this book does contain violence, combat sequences, scarce profanity, drug usage, and mild (but brief) sexual references.*

Don't read the ecerpts on the SCII official website
By Thad
It was officially announced - the release date for the much anticipated sequel to StarCraft. For years, unofficial release dates on pre-order websites kept getting pushed back. I had learned to stop getting my hopes up as each false date approached; but this time the announcement comes straight from the source. Soon, we will be swept away to the Koprulu sector to not only witness, but experience the events that will decide the fate of mankind and the two races incubated by the Xel'Naga.

Now that it is so close, so real, I am watching the pot again, waiting for it to boil. It seems somehow farther off and I need something to satisfy the craving for just a few more weeks. The first single-player storyline, Wings of Liberty, will feature Terran hero Jim Raynor whom we met in the original game. What better way to prepare than to read this book about Jim's early military career and the events that shaped his character?

With that said, this book is NOT a biography of Jim Raynor. While his story provides the main plot line, a good bit of this book goes to the exploits of Tychus Findlay and several sections are devoted to character development regarding the other members of the 321st as well as the bigger picture narrative that drives the Devils' chronicle.

For the non-StarCraft-fan, William C. Dietz provides a realistic portrayal of military life, war, corruption and politics. For us StarCraft junkies, he fleshes out the Guild Wars and exposes the atrocious state the Confederacy was in even before the Zerg and Protoss showed up.

The question is not whether you should buy this book - of course you should - the question is whether Blizzard should have put so many excerpts on the SCII official website. The answer is, no. As of this posting, they've got ten of them available. The most recent is plucked from chapter twenty-two, well into the story; and while they do their job of drawing you in, these snippets give you an unpleasant sense of déjà vu as you read through the book. If you haven't read the excerpts yet, don't; but either way, definitely read this book.
