On the Shoulders of Giants: My Journey Through the Harlem Renaissance, by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

From 1920 to 1940, the Harlem Renaissance produced a bright beacon of light that paved the way for African-Americans all over the country. The unapologetic writings of W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey, the fervent fiction and poetry of Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes, the groundbreaking art of Aaron Douglas and William H. Johnson, and the triumphant music of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong gave voice and expression to the thoughts and emotions that Jim Crow segregation laws had long sought to stifle. In On the Shoulders of Giants, indomitable basketball star and bestselling author and historian Kareem Abdul-Jabbar invites the reader on an extraordinarily personal journey back to his birthplace, through one of the greatest political, cultural, literary, and artistic movements in our history, revealing the tremendous impact the Harlem Renaissance had on both American culture and his own life. Beginning with the rise of the Harlem Rens as pioneers of professional basketball, Kareem traces the many streams of historical influence that converged to create the man he is today - the NBA's all-time leading scorer and a veritable African-American icon. Travel deep into the soul of the Renaissance - to the night clubs, restaurants, basketball games, and fabulous parties that have made footprints in Harlem's history. Meet the athletes, jazz musicians, comedians, actors, politicians, entrepreneurs, and writers who not only inspired Kareem's rise to greatness but an entire nation's. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born in the midst of a cultural reawakening, carried on the shoulders of athletes trying to prove there was a lot more at stake than a ball game, men and women who made music that could break your heart, and writers and intellectuals who gave voice to not just the ideals of a movement but the raw emotions. Kareem tells what it took to get these revolutionaries to Harlem and how they changed the world. A world

Review
"Kareem has offered his own unique perspective to the story of the Harlem Renaissance. By doing so, he has provided a moving history of a cultural place and time that can be experienced by our children and grandchildren. As the saying goes, to know where you are going, you must know from whence you came. We came on the shoulders of giants."

-- Muhammad Ali

"Besides being a great athlete, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is one of the most intelligent individuals I have ever met. The passion he has for his heritage is something that all African-Americans should be inspired by."

-- Jim Hill, CBS Sportscaster

""On the Shoulders of Giants" will be another success for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Working with him daily we've shared our love of jazz and he has not only the knowledge of its history, but its place of import in a community that he grew up in during the latter stages of the Harlem Renaissance. I've been behind those shoulders when he's turned for that sky hook and this will be another score for Kareem."

-- Phil Jackson, Head Coach, Los Angeles Lakers

"Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has created his next sky hook with this newest literary effort. He has skillfully interwoven his two biggest passions-basketball and jazz-and provides a greater understanding of how closely related they are."

-- Spike Lee

"As I watch younger generations idolize sports and entertainment figures today, my greatest hope is that they will be sufficiently attracted to Kareem's iconic and legendary status to pick up "On the Shoulders of Giants." It will help teach them who they are, how they arrived there and help them to take their own places in history."

-- James Briggs Murray, Curator, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture

"The brilliance of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was never limited to on-court accomplishments, and "On the Shoulders of Giants" is another shining example of this. Kareem re-opens the door to history and captures the essence, energy, creativity and spirit of the Harlem Renaissance and the influential artists and players who defined that era."

-- David J. Stern, NBA Commissioner

"During the Harlem Renaissance of the '30s, the African-American community responded to relentless oppression, segregation and disenfranchisement by exploding with an outburst of artistic and political achievement that has never been duplicated in American history. Perhaps Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's vivid and moving rendering of that time in "On the Shoulders of Giants" can inspire the next generation to connect to that rich artistic history and thereby overcome the 'get rich or die tryin'' mentality to once again ascend to heights of accomplishment which truly manifests their capabilities."

-- Herbie Hancock

"Because of his public display of physical and personal grace, I welcome Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's book "On the Shoulders of Giants.""

-- Maya Angelou

"With the same passion and grace that he played with, Kareem takes us into his heart and soul in "On the Shoulders of Giants." His history of Harlem and his family, and all their gifts to him and society is quite profound. By taking this personal revealing journey to Harlem's past, Kareem is preparing us for its present and future. What other superstar athlete could write a book like this?"

-- Billy Crystal

"When I contrast the mature and thoughtful perspective expressed here with the inanity and self-absorption of so much of the modern sports world, I am moved to ask not 'where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?'...but, 'where have you gone, Arthur Ashe? Where have you gone, Kareem?' Well, luckily Kareem has not left and gone away. You just need to look for him in the pages of this remarkable book."

-- Bob Costas

Enjoyable!!!
By Kamau Lizwelicha
I enjoyed reading the book and listening to the narrator. As an African-American, I"d read and heard about the great contributors to the Harlem Renaissance, but this book makes them come alive. The story of Jazz was remarkable, and wished Kareem would have highlighted more jazz artists.

Overall, I recommend this book to everyone who wants to know about the Harlem Renaissance.

Swan Peak: A Dave Robicheaux Novel (Dave Robicheaux Mysteries), by James Lee Burke

James Lee Burke’s beloved Louisiana lawman Dave Robicheaux returns—this time, traveling from New Iberia Parish to the wilds of Montana in this adventure-filled sequel to Black Cherry Blues.

Dave Robicheaux, his wife, and his buddy Clete Purcell have retreated to an old friend’s ranch, hoping to spend their days fishing and enjoying their distance from the harsh, gritty landscape of Louisiana post-Katrina. But the serenity is soon shattered when two college students are found brutally murdered in the hills behind where the Robicheauxs and Purcell are staying. They quickly find themselves involved in a twisted and dangerous mystery involving a wealthy, vicious oil tycoon, his deformed brother and beautiful wife, a sexually deviant minister, an escaped con and former country music star, and a vigilante Texas gunbull out for blood. At the center of the storm is Clete, who cannot shake the feeling that he is being haunted by the ghosts from his past—namely Sally Dio, the mob boss he’d sabotaged and killed years before.

Deftly weaving intricate, engaging plotlines and original, compelling characters with his graceful prose, Burke transcends genre yet again in the latest thrilling addition to his New York Times bestselling series.

From Publishers Weekly
Detective Dave Robicheaux is pitted against all types, from an oil tycoon's deformed brother to a sexually indiscreet minister. With these colorful characters running rampant, narrator Will Patton never stumbles in his delivery or interpretations, offering realistic, entertaining characters who are sure to engage listeners right from the start. Patton's voice is perfectly suited for Burke's rough and tumble tale, his gritty Southern dialect sets the tone for this brooding murder mystery. A Simon & Schuster hardcover (Reviews, May 19). From Bookmarks Magazine
Although Dave Robicheaux has (temporarily) left his beloved New Orleans, fans will not be disappointed in this fast-moving, taut, and riveting thriller. Critics noted James Lee Burke’s somewhat lighter tone and brighter mood since his last novel, The Tin Roof Blowdown (2006), a furious reaction to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, though the Miami Herald felt that Swan Peak didn’t measure up to the former novel’s ferocity and immediacy. Burke’s lyrical language and eye for detail are well suited to the rugged physical beauty of Montana, and his characters spring to life as he deftly juggles several different plotlines. Despite a glut of violence and some potentially confusing narrative shifts, Robicheaux’s followers are in for a “deeply terrifying ride” (Oregonian).

From Booklist
There are no vacations for Dave Robicheaux, whether he’s at home in New Iberia, Louisiana, or fishing in Montana, where he ventures in the latest installment of Burke’s long-running and justly celebrated series. Ever searching for some semblance of his pastoral youth in Cajun country, Robicheaux embarks for Montana as a way of temporarily escaping Katrina- and crime-ravaged south Louisiana, but the evils of modernity—and the tempests raging within his own violence-prone psyche—follow him even to the trout streams and mountain splendors of the Rockies. Of course, it doesn’t help when your longtime and even-more-violence-prone running mate, Clete Purcell, is along for the ride and stirring up long-simmering resentments relating to his and Dave’s last trip to Montana (Black Cherry Blues, 1989). Naturally, there are some very bent, very bad rich guys lurking around the bend, and inevitably, a confluence of events brings the Bobbsey Twins (as Robicheaux and Purcell were known in their days as New Orleans cops) into the line of fire. This time, though, the focus is more on Purcell and on a rich subplot involving a country musician and a prison guard than it is on Dave himself. Longtime Burke readers will find much that is familiar—even sometimes overly familiar—here, but Burke (who lives part-time in Montana) settles in comfortably to his setting, using his signature style to evoke a new landscape and doing considerably more with his supporting cast than is typical of the series. No fan of hard-boiled crime fiction can help but feel the pulse quicken when a new Robicheaux appears. --Bill Ott

Evil, Dark and Masterful...
By Cynthia K. Robertson
Swan Peak by James Lee Burke is the 16th book in his Dave Robicheaux series, and this novel is dark, evil and wonderfully written.

Detective Dave Robicheaux hails from New Iberia, Louisiana. He's spending the summer in Montana with his wife Molly, and best friend Clete Purcell. Robicheaux plans on spending his days fishing and enjoying the Bitterroots. Events conspire against him, and as usual with Dave and Clete, trouble seems to follow them where ever they go.
Two college co-eds are brutally murdered, and one is found near where Robicheaux is staying. Two tourists are also found murdered at a rest stop. Robicheaux feels that the Wellstone brothers, Ridley and Leslie are somehow behind the evil things happening in this small town of Missoula. The Wellstones made their money in Texas, and are now operating a local ministry. Leslie Wellstone, a monster of a man with burn scars all over his face, is married to the pretty country singer, Jamie Sue Stapleton. At the same time, Jamie Sue's true love, Jimmy Dale Greenwood, escapes from a Texas jail after being brutalized by a jail gunbull, Troyce Nix. Nix knows that Greenwod will try to find Jamie Sue and follows Greenwood to Montana. And as if this isn't enough darkness going on, Purcell and Robicheaux are both dealing with demons caused by their childhoods, their Viet Nam experiences and in Robicheaux's case, his battle to stay sober. How these people all converge in this small town and the end results are as surprising as they are masterful.

In terms of writing, James Lee Burke it not just a mystery writer, but an author who writes mysteries. His books are written in a style that can be found in good literature. In fact, in addition to two different mystery series, Burke is the author of eight novels. When Clete became frustrated with the happenings in Missoula, "He closed his cell phone and flipped it over his shoulder onto the bed. If ever reincarnated, he vowed, he would live in a stone hut on top of a mountain in Tibet, thousands of miles away from people whose lives were modeled on the lyrics of country-and-western songs."

James Lee Burke has been publishing a new Robicheaux every July, and it's one of the things I most look forward to during the summer.

Too heavy on the Southern Gothic musings this time around
By Brian Baker
I've been a fan of Burke and Robicheaux from the jump, and part of the the draw is the stylistic approach Burke uses to flesh out his characters and settings.

In this novel, the setting is changed to Montana, where Robicheaux and his wife, accompanied by long-time buddy Clete Purcell, find themselves once again embroiled in murder, mayhem, and twisted familial psychopathy, this time revolving around the Wellstone family, a duo of physically and emotionally crippled brothers who are power brokers in the small area around Swan Peak; as well as the wife of one of the brothers, who brings her own checkered past into the equation.

There are other players in the story, leading to a complex brew: the former prison guard with a background of sexual perversity pursuing the escapee who shanked him and left him for dead; the aimlessly wandering woman who captures his heart; various thugs who work for the Wellstones; a religious charlatan; innocent kids trying to follow their faith who end up as victims.

These characters are all on courses that lead to intersection in the rugged Montana scenery, and Burke plots it very well.

Unfortunately, this time around the story bogs down in the endless and repetitive musings about each of the characters' pasts, as well as Robicheaux's history and demons.

In previous books, we've always had this aspect to the stories, and it's been handled deftly and creatively, adding to the depth of the characterizations and atmospheres of the tales. This time, I think Burke's gone overboard, and it really needlessly slows things down. Some of the charcters have overlapping or similar backgrounds, so the musings in these cases become repetitive. Others deal with similar demons -- most obviously Clete and Robicheaux -- so again there's a great deal of repetition.

There's one other aspect that's starting to become very obvious and problematic for the Robicheaux character: his age. In his musings, we read about his background in the Vietnam War, and times he spent with his Dad "in the 1940s" when he was growing up.

Well... I spent those kinds of times with MY Dad in the 1950s, and am also a Vietnam veteran, and my next birthday is my 60th. Which means Robicheaux has to be nearing 70. It's getting pretty hard to believe a character that old can be carrying on the way Robicheax and Purcell do.

Anyway, it was still an enjoyable read, if not quite up to Burke's earlier works, so I give it 3.5 stars.

Not one of his best
By susan carpenter
Not one of his best. I thought the story implausible. The location, rationale for being there and premise were not believable. His new wife seems like a space filler, certainly not as important as his previous wives.
There were moments when I thought the story was about to pick up but was disappointed again and again.
Too bad I purchased rather than borrowed from the library.

Amazon.com Review
Gates, director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 1991 to 1993, began in an entry level position and rose to the top. His insider's account of the Cold War, CIA operations and the unraveling of the Soviet Union is sprinkled with revelations including the fact that 1983 was the most dangerous year in U.S.-U.S.S.R. relations and that both the CIA and KGB sponsored countless "black operations" designed to embarrass and discredit the other side. Gates also reveals that he secretly met with KGB foreign operations chief Vladimir Kryuchkov on two separate occasions and how the CIA often acted in contempt of Congress. While none of this may come as a huge surprise, it never fails to shock when it's laid out in black and white by someone who was on the inside.

From Publishers Weekly
Gates, director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 1991 to 1993, rose from entry level to the top. His insider's account of the Cold War, CIA operations and the unraveling of the Soviet Union is sprinkled with revelations. We learn that 1983 was "the most dangerous year in U.S.-U.S.S.R. relations"; that President Bush telephoned Boris Yeltsin in the Russian parliament building during the 1991 attempted coup; that for months the CIA predicted a coup attempt against Gorbachev-a warning that he ignored. Gates characterizes former CIA director William Casey as coming to the CIA "primarily to wage war against the Soviet Union." Both the KGB and the CIA, Gates divulges, sponsored countless "black operations"-forgeries, lies, dirty tricks and other covert propaganda activities designed to embarrass and discredit the other side. We also learn that during Gorbachev's 1987 visit to Washington, a collateral secret summit took place-Gates, then CIA deputy director, met with KGB foreign operations chief Vladimir Kryuchkov; they secretly met again in Moscow in 1989 when Kryuchkov was head of the KGB. Gates also candidly discusses how the agency's contemptuous treatment of Congress, evasive briefings and deceptions eroded public confidence.

From Kirkus Reviews
A career undercover man who reached the top of his furtive profession (as director of the CIA from late 1991 through early 1993), Gates sheds considerable light in this wide-angle memoir on the ways in which the craft of intelligence influenced government policy during the height of the Cold War. Focusing on the undeclared conflict that pitted the US against the USSR and its client states in venues ranging from Afghanistan to Poland, the author offers a notably candid chronological evaluation of what his agency contributed (or did not contribute) to the last 25 years of America's war against Communism. He also provides telling detail on the homefront hostilities in which CIA officials battled their counterparts at other agencies, justifiably wary lawmakers, and investigative reporters to remain in the good graces of the White House. Gates also explains that d‚tente was the Nixon administration's pragmatic response to the CIA's failure to foresee the Soviet military buildup that began during the late 1960s, producing a singular shift in the global balance of power. He goes on to show that there was appreciably more continuity than is generally perceived between the Carter and Reagan eras, as far as effective challenges to Moscow's zeal for geopolitical adventurism were concerned. Covered as well are the CIA's prescient take on Mikhail Gorbachev's ouster, the agency's surprise at the overnight success of the Velvet Revolution that signalled the end of the Warsaw Pact, the cost of institutional lapses (including the treachery of Aldrich Ames), and the several secret CIA-KGB summits. The vetted text delivers a surprising measure of jocose particulars and tricks-of-the-trade disclosures. Nor does Gates neglect to settle some scores with out-of-office mandarins (George Schultz and others) who beat him into print. A silent-service veteran's genuinely engrossing from-the- inside-out appraisal of an eventful period in the history of the US and the wider world. Seducing Mr. Darcy, by Gwyn Cready

In the second hilarious and sexy novel from author Gwyn Cready, a divorcée suffering from "carnal deprivation" has a racy one-night stand with one of literature's most irresistible heroes -- and learns that you really can't judge a book by its cover.

Mr. Darcy just isn't Flip Allison's style. She prefers novels with hot sex on the bathroom sink to the mannerly, high-tension longing of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. That is, until she pays a visit to Madame K, who promises a therapeutic massage with an opportunity to "Imagine Yourself in Your Favorite Book." Somehow, on the way to a sizzling sink-top session with a Venetian Adonis, Flip lands right in the middle of Regency England -- and dangerously close to handsome Mr. Darcy. So close, in fact, that she discovers a side of him even Jane Austen couldn't have imagined.

Waking from her massage, Flip is on top of the world and ready for her upcoming book club -- that is, until she notices a new scene in which Darcy and spunky heroine Lizzy Bennet are arguing over...Flip Allison? Her rapturous liaison with Darcy has had disastrous consequences for Austen's characters -- not to mention millions of Pride and Prejudice fans! Flip has twenty-four hours to put the story back on course, and Magnus Knightley, a sexy but imperious scholar whose brooding good looks and infuriating arrogance are decidedly Darcy-like, is the only one who can help. The only problem is, Flip can't keep her hands off him, either....

Surprisingly different
By Kindle Customer
I rated this a little higher than average because I felt it was higher than average. I have long been an Austin fan, " Pride and Prejudice" being one of my favorite novels of all. This very different take on a classic captured my attention. I would recommend it highly.

3.5 stars and watching for her next book
By Kindle Customer
This was an enjoyable read. The Premise was fun and different, getting a massage and being transported into a book and "changing" the story. But things go very wrong and when Allison awakes, she finds that the actual book is being re-written based on her experiences.

Naturally she has to try and rectify this along with the unwanted help from a current day professor of literature. Fun ensures.

I can't say that I'm now a devoted reader of Gwyn Cready, her writing style is still a little unpolished and her plot lines could be tighter. For example little knowledge is given to the person giving the massage and we just take it on faith that its there to make the story work instead of woven into the story. Still, very innovative and I will definitely check out her next book.

Clever and enjoyable read--different and better than most recent romances
By A. Mode
I decided to read this book after seeing that it is the 2009 RITA award winner of Best Paranormal Romance. "Pride and Prejudice" is my favorite book so I was a biased reader almost daring Cready to offend me. Not only was I not offended by Cready's imaginative use of Mr. Darcy, I was pleased to discover that Cready must love Darcy as much as the rest of us.

This book has all the elements I expect to find in a really good romance novel--believable dialogue, interesting characters fleshed out beyond sterotypes, tightly wound plotting. But it has some nice surprises too-- wicked humor, clever conflict and situations, juxtaposition of Regency and contemporary romance, and, most importantly, an atypical hero and heroine that seem both real and likable.

The only reason that I did not give five stars was because my "willing suspension of disbelief" was stretched a bit during the metaphysical aspects of the plot. But this is paranormal romance so I can forgive Cready's bold jump given that "Seducing Mr. Darcy" does everything else exactly right.

Do yourself a favor and read this book. You will find it a welcome respite from everything you have read lately.

If readers would like to see the "bloopers" that we teachers make in our rooms, you need to read this book. We have days and situations that are just too much fun and people don't believe how much we, and the students enjoy our days. With so much negative press available about NCLB and teacher quality, this book is a must read to see that it is not all bad on the chalkboard front. If you have a teacher who is new to the field, make sure this is a part of their "equipment" for the first day of class. They will love you for it.

Simon Doonan's ECCENTRIC GLAMOUR is intended as an antidote to the epidemic of slutty dressing and porno-chic which has taken over since the arrival of Paris Hilton and Tara Reid. In Simon's utopian world, conformity is the only crime and dressing down is the only faux-pas. Doonan believes that eccentric glamour is every woman's birthright. While the typical TV boobs 'n' botox make-overs force Everywoman to look the same - exhibit A: "The Real Housewives of Orange County" - the transformations which he strives to provoke in this book are the very opposite. Developing a glamorously eccentric style involves revealing and magnifying everything which is distinctive and idiosyncratic about you. This book is by no means a typical style advice manual. In ECCENTRIC GLAMOUR you will find a unique mixture of cultural commentary and personal disclosure, generously seasoned with gushings of wildly dictatorial, provocative and reckless style advice and evenly sprinkled with one-on-one interviews with some the World's most glamorous eccentrics, including Iman, Lucy Liu, Tilda Swinton, Malcolm Gladwell, Chloe Sevigny, and Dita Von Teese.

From Publishers Weekly
Entertaining and bitingly witty, Doonan (Confessions of a Window Dresser) calls upon the women of America to embrace their inner potential for dressing idiosyncratically, conventions be damned. But in making clear his fondness for vulgarity and bits of bad taste, he is clear about the downright hideous: fannypacks, for instance, are close to blasphemy. Doonan is uninhibited in revealing certain truths many outside the fashion industry tend to throw in its face: yes, there is more to life than clothing, and yes, the world of high style is often "depressing." Before one praises him for single-handedly unveiling the dirty underbelly of Fashion Week, it's worth noting his reliance on heavyweight figures such as Iman, Isabel Toledo, Lucy Liu and Hamish Bowels to provide their own insights via mini-surveys. Entertaining anecdotes from Doonan's life pepper the text, though his own style can at times be flippant or offensive (as when musing on how he would dress were he a butch lesbian).

Fun for fashion and non-fashion folk alike
By Liz Lynch
Although I am not sure everyone fits in Simon Doonan's 3 categories of fashion sense (Gypsy, Existentialist and Socialite), it doesn't matter. This book is great fun and had me laughing out loud all the way thru. I always read a little something from him when I need a pick me up!

I love this book simply for Simon Doonan's writing! He is sharp, witty and provocative and I found myself laughing out loud at some of his observations. Not so much about fashion but more about attitude, this book is a fun read.

Inspiration For Us Oddballs
By S. G. Lake
I'm going to flat out admit it, I'm an eccentric
nut.I talk to the cats I meet on my morning walk,
I still play records on a record player, and I find
it much easier to shop in thrift stores vs. regular
retail.I still gravitate towards the same kind of
pieces I went for in my younger days.I usually wear an
effortless "uniform" of a black blazer jacket, black jeans or pants,
Black t-shirts or sweaters, & Converse lowtops.( I do a lot of walking, I need comfy shoes.)
I love this book because it's not the usual bourgeois style guide.
It's given me the guts to be okay with myself, goofy quirks & all.
I'm "a dyed in the wool Existentialist".I like to get a lot of value for what I spend on clothing
so I'm not into overly expensive clothes.I only own two purses-one black, one brown, bought at
The Thrift.I'm "50 plus" I gave up on being "sophisticated" years ago.I'm into accepting myself as
"immature" as I'll always be and will eternally stay. :)
If you do own this book hang onto it and refer back to it from time to time, especially
in times your self esteem takes a bit of a knock. There will always be people
out there who can't quite grasp the concept of "just being yourself", they can't leave well

Darkness at Noon, by Arthur Koestler

Originally published in 1941, Arthur Koestler's modern masterpiece, Darkness At Noon, is a powerful and haunting portrait of a Communist revolutionary caught in the vicious fray of the Moscow show trials of the late 1930s.

During Stalin's purges, Nicholas Rubashov, an aging revolutionary, is imprisoned and psychologically tortured by the party he has devoted his life to. Under mounting pressure to confess to crimes he did not commit, Rubashov relives a career that embodies the ironies and betrayals of a revolutionary dictatorship that believes it is an instrument of liberation.

A seminal work of twentieth-century literature, Darkness At Noon is a penetrating exploration of the moral danger inherent in a system that is willing to enforce its beliefs by any means necessary.

Review
"One of the few books written in this epoch which will survive it."
-- New Statesman (UK)

"It is the sort of novel that transcends ordinary limitations. Written with such dramatic power, with such warmth of feeling, and with such persuasive simplicity that it is as absorbing as melodrama."
-- The New York Times Book Review

"A rare and beautifully executed novel."
-- New York Herald Tribune

"A remarkable book. A grimly fascinating interpretation of the logic of the Russian revolution, indeed of all revolutionary dictatorships, and at the same time a tense and subtly intellectualized drama."
-- The Times Literary Supplement (London)

About the Author
Born in Budapest in 1905, educated in Vienna, Arthur Koestler immersed himself in the major ideological and social conflicts of his time. A communist during the 1930s, and visitor for a time in the Soviet Union, he became disillusioned with the Party and left it in 1938.  Later that year in Spain, he was captured by the Fascist forces under Franco, and sentenced to death. Released through the last-minute intervention of the British government, he went to France where, the following year, he again was arrested for his political views.  Released in 1940, he went to England, where he made his home. His novels, reportage, autobiographical works, and political and cultural writings established him as an important commentator on the dilemmas of the twentieth century. He died in 1983.

The First Hearing

Nobody can rule guiltlessly.-- Saint-Just

Chapter One

The cell door slammed behind Rubashov.

He remained leaning against the door for a few seconds, and lit a cigarette. On the bed to his right lay two fairly clean blankets, and the straw mattress looked newly filled. The wash-basin to his left had no plug, but the tap functioned. The can next to it had been freshly disinfected, it did not smell. The walls on both sides were of solid brick, which would stifle the sound of tapping, but where the heating and drain pipe penetrated it, it had been plastered and resounded quite well; besides, the heating pipe itself seemed to be noise-conducting. The window started at eye level; one could see down into the courtyard without having to pull oneself up by the bars. So far everything was in order.

He yawned, took off his coat, rolled it up and put it on the mattress as a pillow. He looked out into the yard. The snow shimmered yellow in the double light of the moon and the electric lanterns. All round the yard, along the walls, a narrow track had been cleared for the daily exercise. Dawn had not yet appeared; the stars still shone clear and frostily, in spite of the lanterns. On the rampart of the outside wall, which lay opposite Rubashov's cell, a soldier with slanted rifle was marching the hundred steps up and down; he stamped at every step as if on parade. From time to time the yellow light of the lanterns flashed on his bayonet.

Rubashov took his shoes off, still standing at the window. He put out his cigarette, laid the stump on the floor at the end of his bedstead, and remained sitting on the mattress for a few minutes. He went back to the window once more. The courtyard was still; the sentry was just turning; above the machine-gun tower he saw a streak of the Milky Way.

Rubashov stretched himself on the bunk and wrapped himself in the top blanket. It was five o'clock and it was unlikely that one had to get up here before seven in the winter. He was very sleepy and, thinking it over, decided that he would hardly be brought up for examination for another three or four days. He took his pince-nez off, laid it on the stone-paved floor next to the cigarette stump, smiled and shut his eyes. He was warmly wrapped up in the blanket, and felt protected; for the first time in months he was not afraid of his dreams.

When a few minutes later the warder tuned the light off from outside, and looked through the spy-hole into his cell, Rubashov, ex-Commissar of the People, slept, his back turned to the wall, with his head on his outstretched left arm, which stuck stiffly out of the bed; only the hand on the end of it hung loosely and twitched in his sleep.

Wanted to read this book for a long time. Finally did. I feel like I will reread this many times because I truly enjoyed the writing.. the complexities behind what was going on in the reality of Stalinist Russia, and how the ideology of the Party allowed for members to eat their own once they were expendable and used up. Very gripping and telling of what happens when a government is given this ultimate control over the people, and the horrors that happen against human nature when the views and stability of the Party override fundamental human rights and liberty.

The view from inside the dustbin of history
By M. A. Krul
Arthur Koestler's "Darkness at Noon", his magnum opus, is more than just a book. It is not a novel, nor is it an essay; it is a memory and an experience, a warning and a vision. It takes the reader into a nightmare world that is nevertheless real, an alternative history that is more history than alternative, and if he has a sensitivity to questions of history and politics, it is sure to be imprinted on his mind forever. In summary, it's one of the most powerful political books of the 20th Century.

The theme of the book is the experience of Stalinism, in particular the Stalinist Great Purges and the show trials during the late 1930s. Arthur Koestler himself was a Party socialist for much of his life, and only left the Soviet Union in 1938. Having known many of the Old Bolsheviks personally, he saw the state of the revolution taken over by Stalin and his henchmen, and witnessed the slow (and sometimes fast) destruction of the revolutionary old guard.

It's the experiences of this infamous Great Terror of communism, seen from the eyes of a communist, that form the basic of this book. The plot is rather limited in scope: the protagonist, N.S. Rubashov (probably loosely modelled after Bukharin), is arrested for 'counterrevolutionary crimes', and spends the rest of the book in prison, being interrogated and prepared for the inevitable show trial. This of itself is not particularly clever, but that is not the core of the book.

The real core of the book is Rubashov's fundamental theoretical paradoxical position: all his life he has believed in submitting the "subjectivity" of the individual to the demands of the Party, in the knowledge that they were building a future for mankind. All his life he has believed in History working its will, in the inevitable eventual victory of the right over the wrong. Yet now this same history has taken a turn, and he and the works of his generation are destroyed by the progeny of his own revolution. His interrogators, first the cynical intellectual Ivanov and later the farmer's son-turned-cadre Gletkin, want him to sign a series of damning confessions that are palpably false, which all parties involved know. Yet if the Party demands this of him, if this indeed is the will of History, can he resist? And moreover, how is it possible to begin with that the revolution led to the terror of "No. 1", the totalitarian Party leader?

Through a series of short but thrilling scenes in interrogation and longer periods of reflection, monologue interieure, and flashbacks, the downfall of a committed revolutionary and intellectual and his generation are painted as vividly and profoundly as one could demand of literature. This book is more powerful than Orwell's "1984" and yet more understanding than any of the common anti-communist works of the last century; it is a testament, dedicated to the generation of Trotsky, Bukharin, Rykov, Tomsky, Rakovsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev, and all the other fighters for socialism at the birth of that bloodiest of centuries.

"1984" in 1938
By Gerald Brennan
I'm afraid to read anything else by Arthur Koestler.

"Darkness at Noon," his excellent novel about an aging revolutionary awaiting a show-trial and execution in Stalin's Soviet Union, is so thoroughly compelling and readable, alive with ideas and general brilliance, and so widely recognized as Koestler's masterpiece, that I fear his other books will be disappointing by comparison.

This, on the other hand, may well be my favorite book. Ever. Despite the fact that my "to-read" pile is a paper stalagmite that grows faster than I can chip away at it, I ripped through this one twice in under six months, and if I were somehow locked in the bathroom with only this on the toilet tank, and forced to start it a third time--I can't imagine this actually happening, but bear with me here--I can't say I'd be all that disappointed.

This reads like "1984," but it preceded Orwell's book, and presumably greatly influenced it. More importantly, although the real 1984 eventually rolled around to make Orwell's dystopia seem at least somewhat absurd (in execution, if not idea and desire), this still feels incredibly realistic.

And scarily, this is more relevant to today's America. While our level of freedom and political discourse may be completely different than that of Stalin's Soviet Union, the methods they used would not be unfamiliar in Guantanamo or Abu Grahib--or in some police precincts. Not the shrill and scary tactics of "1984," but the soft and simple: psychological games, sleep deprivation, and the like. Sleep deprivation may seem downright kind in the pantheon of torture, and I'm sure it starts off relatively innocuously--"They're terrorists, they're criminals, so why should we coddle them? Why should they get a good night's sleep?"--but any tactic whereby one compels the body to betray the mind is torture. And the sad thing is that torture doesn't work. Forget all the crazy ticking time-bomb scenarios, the fact is simple. Torture. Doesn't. Work. It does not provide reliable information or accurate confessions. And this book shows why. Rubashov, kept up for days on end, becomes willing to say or do anything for a few blessed moments of sleep. He will sell himself out. He will say anything. He will lie.

The strange peculiarity of Soviet Russia is that the victim and the torturers both know these lies are lies. But he says them, and they listen, because they both have their roles to play. The show trial is not really a trial. It is only a show.

But the great thing about "Darkness at Noon" is that it isn't just a polemic about tactics or a lesson about history; it is a powerful meditation on good and evil, and the extent to which we allow the latter in the short term because we believe it will somehow help us get the former in the long term. One reads this and feels sympathy not just for Rubashov, but for his interrogators, because they grapple with a timeless question: can we, and should we, make today difficult and imperfect and unjust for the sake of a better tomorrow?

This is a weighty question, and the book abounds with such meditations: like Dostoyevsky's works--to which it is clearly in debt--it is a philosophical novel with true weight and depth. In "The Grand Inquisitor", one of the most famous chapters in literature, Dostoyevsky concocts a prison scene in which the head of the Spanish Inquisition discourses to Jesus on why the Church felt it necessary to behave in ways contrary to Jesus' teachings. And this book feels like "The Grand Inquisitor" writ large. Though it revolves around ideology instead of religion, the effect is similar--disciples explaining to the master why they needed to stray, why they needed to corrupt and pervert their beliefs in order to save them from external enemies, why they needed to destroy the movement in order to save it.

On this and many other issues, Rubashov ponders but--importantly--does not always come up with clear answers. "How can one change the world if one identifies oneself with everybody?" he muses early on, then asks, "How else can one change it? He who understands and forgives--where would he find a motive to act? Where would he not?" I don't think Koestler wants to give us answers. Like the best artists, he's not so much interested in telling us what to think as he is in making us think. It's not always about finding answers; it's about remembering to ask questions. And that's something we need to remember today.
