Includes Ann Rule's insider commentary on the Mary Winkler murder case

REAL-LIFE MURDER. REAL-LIFE MYSTERY.

In some murder cases, the truth behind the most tragic of crimes crystallizes with relative ease. Not so with these fascinating accounts drawn from the personal files of Ann Rule, America's #1 bestselling true-crime writer. What happens when the case itself becomes an intractable puzzle, when clues are shrouded in smoke and mirrors, and when criminals skillfully evade law enforcement in a maddening cat-and-mouse chase? Even the most devoted true-crime reader won't predict the outcome of these truly baffling cases until the conclusions revealed in Ann Rule's marvelously insightful narrative: An ideal family is targeted for death by the least likely enemy, who plotted their demise from behind bars.... A sexual predator hides behind multiple fake identities, eluding police for years while his past victims live in fear that he will hunt them down.... A modest preacher's wife confesses to shooting her husband after an argument -- but there's more to her shattering story than meets the eye. These and other true cases are analyzed with stunning clarity in a page-turning collection you won't be able to put down.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Rule looks at marriages gone bad in her latest volume of true-crime case files. Stories include "The Minister's Wife," about a woman convicted of shooting her husband in 2006, and "The Painter's Wife," an amazing tale of two strangers kidnapped by a hardened criminal. The bulk of the book is taken up by "The Deputy's Wife," the sad tale of a once-promising young police officer, Bill Jensen, who eventually took out a contract on his own family. It's a good yarn, full of horrifying twists, but at 150 pages can get repetitive. For those not used to it, Rule's fondness for potboiler prose-"Their marriage had spun like a colorful top...Now as it wound down slower and slower, Sue could see the pattern of lies"-can also annoy. Many of the seven cases here are gruesome but unmemorable, perhaps the inevitable result of Rule's prodigious output.

True Crime, New and Old!
By KDMask
I haven't met an Ann Rule book I didn't like, but they are always too short! This one I read in two days. This book focus' on women in abusive relationships that lead to murder or almost-murder. I really liked the stories that are older cases. With so many true crime shows on TV, it's hard to find something new and fresh. Since this is a "crime file" you have the option of dipping into the book when you'd like, story by story. Ann also has many resources for women in trouble in this volume including websites to visit. Ann always makes the victims come alive in each of her books, honoring them in a way few can.

More Ann Rule
By Magyar
This is the latest book in Ann Rule's True Crime Series. The Writings are not up to her usual High Standards. In each of the cases covered it seems the villian is all bad and the victim is all good, which is not the usual case in real life. The best story is in the last one covered, which is "The Minister's Wife". The latter is the story of the Minister's wife from Tennesseee who shot him in the back "in self defense". I was not aware that part of the reason for problems in the marriage is that she fell for one of these Nigerian inheritance schemes. I still find it hard to understand (As Ann Rule does)how anyone could believe that a complete stranger would give you thousands of Dollars. But I guess financially desperate people do desperate things. However the depiction of "The Minister's Wife" (for some reason) created sympathy for her (in me.) I was glad that she served a very short sentence, and was released. One of the things that made these cases unappealing is that most of them occurred many years ago, when life was so much different here in the USA. (No internet, PCs or Cell Phones.)

From the Unsolved to the Recently Convicted: A Variety of True Crime
By Kim Bryan
In Ann Rules' latest publication SMOKE, MIRRORS AND MURDER readers are given a wide vareity of true crime stories; very much reminiscent of her days of magazine writing.

In this book, readers are given a vareity of stores, from spousal murders to the unsolved murder of Dorothy Jones, whose death remains unsolved (and quite possibly a medical mystery).

It is a very interesting book. I often found myself unable to put it down, so much so that I was able to complete it in less than 48 hours.

I highly recommend this book to true crime fans, or even just mystery genre fans. Especially if you have been following the case of Mary Winkler (a still much debated issue), as Ann Rule provides a detailed account of this case in addition to her own insight of the case.

How to Be Single: A Novel, by Liz Tuccillo

The inspiration for the major motion picture!

From the coauthor of He’s Just Not That Into You and a former story editor for Sex and the City, How to Be Single is about one woman’s attempts to navigate a world filled with ever-evolving definitions of love.

Julie Jenson is a single thirty-seven-year-old book publicist in New York. When her friend Georgia’s husband leaves her for a samba teacher, she forces Julie to organize a single girls’ night out to remind her why it’s so much fun not to be tied down. But the night ends up having the opposite effect on Julie. Fed up with the dysfunction and disappointments of singledom, Julie quits her job and sets off to find out how women around the world are dealing with this dreaded phenomenon. From Paris to Brazil to Sydney, Bali, Beijing, Mumbai, and Reyjavik, Julie falls in love, gets her heart broken, sees the world, and learns more than she ever dreamed possible. All the while her friends at home are grappling with their own issues—bad blind dates, loveless engagements, custody battles, single motherhood, and the death of a loved one. Written in Liz Tuccillo’s pitch-perfect, hilarious, and relatable voice, How to Be Single is “a summer read that, for once, accurately depicts the hopes, fears, and bad dates of a single woman looking for love” (Parade).

From Publishers Weekly
The sassy coauthor of He's Just Not That into You and former executive story editor for Sex and the City stays on familiar ground for her energetic fiction debut. It follows the dating lives of five single New York women, one of whom, narrator Julie, is writing a book about how bachelorettes across the world manage. A Yahoo-sponsored trip sent Tuccillo traveling the world interviewing women in preparation for her novel; Julie embarks on a similar journey while her four friends duke it out on the New York dating scene. The subsequent stories of courtship, marriage and romantic expectations from Julie's travels are revealing and compelling, but the narrator's interviews quickly give way to her own international affair. The friends back home engage in familiar behavior: the postdivorce fling, the forbidden workplace romance, the comfortable but boring relationship and the quirky pet as substitute-boyfriend. The women's plucky points-of-view are nicely intermingled, with Julie as the woman who ties them all together in Carrie-like fashion. Occasional shifts to issues like poverty in India, however, work against the book's strengths. (June)

From Booklist
Tuccillo, coauthor of the enormously popular He’s Just Not That into You (2004), ventures into fictional territory that distinctly echoes Sex and the City. Julie Jensen, 38, and her friends are singletons living it up in New York, but they would all much rather be in committed relationships. On a whim, Julie decides to write a book about the experiences of single women around the world. Taking a leave of absence from her job as a publicist, she jets off for parts unknown. Her first destination is France, where she encounters the enigmatic and charming Thomas, who is in an open marriage. Even as she visits other countries, Julie can’t help but long for Thomas, who meets up with her again in Bali, jump-starting a whirlwind affair. While Julie is off seeing the world, her friends are back in New York, growing closer to each other as their lives take some disastrous twists and turns. Both entertaining and thoughtful, Tuccillo’s debut is a must-read for women navigating the sometimes treacherous dating world. --Kristine Huntley

Review
"A fun read that reminds single girls everywhere that it's fabulous to be single." -- Plum Sykes, author of Bergdorf Blondes

"Liz Tuccillo's debut novel is part fascinating, hands-and-lips-on anthropological study and part whirlwind trip around the world. But most of all, How To Be Single is a tribute to female friendship with a double dose of hilarity and heart!" -- Claire Cook, author of Summer Blowout and Must Love Dogs

"With a brutal honesty and an outrageous sense of humor, Liz Tuccillo achieves the impossible -- she gives a fresh, new voice to the world of the single-and-looking-for-love. Tuccillo forces us to think outside the box while taking us on a trip around the world and into the lives of single women everywhere. She has created a new genre: the chick-lit travelogue." -Josh Safran, Producer, Gossip Girl

"This book is a celebration of the 'magnificent, cruel, sublime, heartbreaking party' that is love. I'm quoting one of my favorite lines from How to Be Single here, and you'll be doing the same as soon as you crack open this delicious feast of a first novel that examines how it is to be single around the world. Liz articulates the quest for love and the nuance of friendship in such a fresh, soulful, humorous, modern, honest voice, you can't help but fall in love with her characters, and with Liz as well." -- Cindy Chupack, author of The Between Boyfriends Book and writer/executive producer of Sex and the City

"In her energetic fiction debut, [Tuccillo] follows the dating lives of five single New York women, one of whom, narrator Julie, is writing a book about how bachelorettes across the world manage. "Tuccillo, a former story editor of HBO's Sex and the City, shows that she can tell a story on the page as well as she can on the small screen. Her novel cleverly moves back and forth between the heroine's travels all over the world to her friend's dealing with the everyday minutiae back home in New York City." -- Romantic Times

From a guy's point of view
By Russell Corey
As a guy, I read these types of books mostly to see what the other side is thinking.

Like the women in the book, I'm single and in my late thirties and even us guys hear a clock ticking if we want to marry someone our own age and start a family. So I could relate in a way to their search for love.

As for the book itself, hey, I read it, didn't I? If it wasn't any good I would have put it down a long time ago. Not the manliest book cover for a guy to be carrying around. But I gave the first few pages a chance and kept turning them.

A few points of view.

The main women in the novel bemoan their fate, but I think the fact that they are still single is a lot of times their own fault. Not to say guys are blameless, yeah, we're pretty bad.

Too much like Sex & The City. I wonder what single women in the Midwest or South go through? Or single women serving in the Armed Forces? I've seen this New York crowd so often in movies and TV, that it didn't break much ground for me. The International women were a little more interesting, but even then it was mostly city women going to bars and dancing - which is exactly where all the "great guys" are.

I didn't like that the main character slept with a married man. Guess what? You're the freaking bad guy when you do that. So I couldn't really care for her to do much of anything after that.

Do I recommend this book to single people in their 30s and 40s? Yes. Not that I agree with all the characters in the book and the decisions they make with their lives.

I also read He's Just Not That Into You, which Liz Tuccillo co-wrote. That was the main reason I picked up How To Be Single in the first place, because I enjoyed reading He's Just Not That Into You from the other side as well. What did I learn from that book? If you are into a girl...tell her!

In the final weeks of a fierce presidential campaign, a motorcade carrying candidate Josh Alexander is shattered by a car bomb. Soon after the attack, Alexander is carried to victory by a sympathy vote, but his assailants have not been found. When CIA director Irene Kennedy and Special Agent Skip McMahon receive damaging intelligence on Washington’s most powerful players, they call on Mitch Rapp—the one man reckless enough to unravel a global network of contract killers on an explosive mission that leads back to the heart of our nation’s capital…and the inner sanctum of the Oval Office.

From Publishers Weekly
CIA operative Mitch Rapp returns in another taut thriller. With the presidential elections close at hand, it looks a little iffy for Democratic candidates Josh Alexander and running mate Mark Ross, but when a bomb attack on their motorcade leaves Alexander's wife and numerous others dead, the sympathetic vote sweeps the two men to a bittersweet victory at the polls. At first the bombing looks to be the work of al-Qaeda, but evidence soon points to a source much closer to home. Schultz brings a comfortable presence to his reading. Having narrated several of the past Rapp adventures, he is on familiar ground, and it shows. His clear, crisp reading style fits perfectly, beat for beat, with Flynn's straightforward storytelling. His characterizations are distinct and well handled, giving Rapp just the right amount of gruffness, while at the same time providing each of the supporting characters with their own individual voices without using over-the-top accents or vocalizations,. Peter Michalos's fine abridgment keeps the story moving with no apparent sacrifice of character or plot.

A great read, but there must be an epilogue somewhere...
By Amazon Customer
I'll explain the review's title in a minute. First, having finished all of Lee Child's books, I was looking for something to keep me occupied until "superman" Jack Reacher emerges again from Child's imagination. I found
Vince Flynn and Reacher's counterpart, Mitch Rapp. The difference is that Child deals in a broader arena of crime while Flynn is political.

Normally, I don't like political novels. I get enough politics in 2008 from the news. But Flynn has tapped into the depths of my willingness to accept conspiracy theories, and he's got me! While I highly recommend "Act of Treason," I would suggest you start with earlier books - though I admit that I haven't read any yet. However, there is a distinct feeling that this is an "interim" book, one that is begging for a sequel. As enjoyable a read as this was, I was a little disappointed with the end and had the feeling that I was in the middle of a serial, waiting for the final chapters. Still, this was, not to be trite, a page-turner and in 2008 enough to give one a sense of foreboding.

The best thing is that there is now a continuation of my reading history from Saunders and Sanders to WEB Griffin to Child to Flynn with a few Parker thrown in for bad measure.

I've already ordered three more Flynn novels. I haven't enjoyed Grisham since his second novel; I never cared for Dan Brown. Anybody have other recommendations knowing now that Saunders, Sanders, Child and Flynn are at the top of my reading lists?

Another Good One
By Bonner '62
I like the Rapp books because the author understands this is war and we could lose it if we aren't careful. The MSM seems to think the war is like pulling over someone whose car smells of marajuana on the highway. If you didn't Miranda the driver the case is no good. This is war not a law enforcement matter. It's fun to read about Rapp's direct manner and a CIA willing to back him up even when the bad guys turn out to be US politicians. If only it was true. Read the book, it's a lot of fun. I've got to nitpick a little. The author seems to think Cyprus is part of Greece. It was funny because I was in Athens when I read the book and have worked in Nicosia. The ethnic Greeks dominate half of Cyprus but it is an independant country. In fact it's now part of the EU. The author has the Greek government protesting the "kidnapping" of a Cypriot citizen and Rapp threatens a Cypriot banker with an onslaught of Greek investigators from Athens if he doesn't help. No the Greek Cypriots and Greeks are close but the Greeks don't run things in Nicosia or Larnica. No biggie but it struck a discordant note in the book that the author seems to think Cyprus is a province of Greece.

Practice to Deceive, by Ann Rule

#1 New York Times bestselling author and Queen of True Crime Ann Rule delivers another gripping true-crime story—this time a shattering case of Christmastime murder off the coast of Washington State, with a shocking amount of drama, greed, sex, and scandal and no shortage of suspects.

With more than 50 million copies of her thirty-four books in print, from The Stranger Beside Me, her chilling personal account of knowing Ted Bundy, to fourteen hardcover books— including Small Sacrifices; Green River, Running Red; and Too Late to Say Goodbye—and sixteen collections in her #1 bestselling Crime Files series, Ann Rule is without a doubt “America’s best true-crime writer” (Kirkus Reviews). In Practice to Deceive, her first book-length investigative chronicle since In the Still of the Night, Rule unravels a shattering case of Christmastime murder off the coast of Washington State—presented with the clarity, authority, and emotional depth that Rule’s readers expect. It’s a case with enough drama, greed, sex, and scandal to be called “The Real Housewives of Whidbey Island,” but this was not reality television. This was murder: pure, cruel, ugly, and senseless. And someone had to pay the price.

Nestled in Puget Sound, Whidbey Island is a gem of the Pacific Northwest; accessible only by ferry and the soaring Deception Pass Bridge, it is known for its artistic communities and stunning natural beauty. Life there is low-key, insular, and the island’s year-round residents tend to know one another’s business. But when the blood-drenched body of Russel Douglas was discovered the day after Christmas in his SUV in a hidden driveway near Whidbey’s most exclusive mansions, the whole island was shocked. A single bullet between his eyes was the cause of death, but no one could imagine who among them could plot such a devious, cold-blooded crime. At first, police suspected suicide, tragically common at the height of the holiday season. But when they found no gun in or near the SUV, Russel’s manner of death became homicide. Like a cast of characters from a classic mystery novel, a host of Whidbey residents fell under suspicion.

Brenna Douglas was Russel’s estranged and soon-to-be-ex wife, who allowed him to come home for a Christmas visit with their children. The couple owned the popular Just B’s salon. Brenna’s good friend Peggy Sue Thomas worked there, and Brenna complained often to her that Russel was physically and emotionally abusive. Peggy Sue’s own life has been one of extremes. Married three times, hers is a rags-to-riches-and-back-again tale in which she’s played many roles: aircraft mechanic, basketball coach, the “drop-dead gorgeous” beauty queen as a former Ms. Washington, Las Vegas limousine driver, million-dollar horse breeder, wealthy divorcée. But in 2003, her love affair with married guitarist Jim Huden led the two Whidbey Island natives to pursue their ultimate dreams of wealth and privilege—even at the expense of human life.

Unravel the tangled web woven by Russel Douglas’s murder in Practice to Deceive, the newest heart pounding true-crime tour de force from Ann Rule.

From Booklist
This is Rule’s twenty-fourth true-crime book in a successful sweep that started with her brilliant take on serial killer Ted Bundy, the man she worked next to at a Seattle crisis center. Rule’s true-crime books are notable for their in-depth forensics, perceptive trial coverage (often), and keen psychological insight (always). Her latest extends an analogy she has often used: how an investigation into homicide takes, basically, a stick drawing of a person, the victim, and with each piece of evidence and parts of interviews, transforms the stick figure into a rounded, complex human being whose life holds the key to his or her death. In 2003, a man’s body was discovered in a car parked in front of a cabin on Whidbey Island, Washington. The victim, Russel Douglas, had a single gunshot wound to his head. The investigation took years to complete (it took a decade to come to trial) and wound through seven states and Mexico. Rule is at her best in tracing Douglas’ frantic, depression-fueled changes in the years preceding his murder. This time Rule occasionally becomes tedious in her detailed coverage of every phase of the investigation and trial, using her remarkable access to sources to deliver, finally, too much information. Still, this account delivers quite a punch in its final revelations. --Connie Fletcher

Practice to Deceive

I love Ann Rule's books but this one was very hard for
me to get through. It seemed as though the same information
was repeated page after page after page. I was very
disappointed. Usually, Ann Rule's books keep me up at night.
Not this one. I had a hard time picking it up once I put it down.
I will return it for a refund $10.00 is too much to pay for a book
that is so boring. I skipped several chapters and didn't' miss a thing.

tedious
By booklover343
Ann Rule is an amazing author and I've loved most of her books. This one, however, was the story of a too complicated crime and investigation. To give her credit, she does warn readers several times that the investigation was very complicated, over many years, and covered many different states. The warning was not enough...she should have passed on this one for a book!

Because you have had to slog through so many pages and so many different suspects (and too much detail on non-suspects), it's tiresome and you start to not really care who did it.

If you are looking for a good true-crime book, pick one of her other ones.

So very disappointing
By ges
I waited so long for this book to come out as I am a major Ann Rule fan. What an absolute mess of a book it is . So much detail about all of these peripheral characters that leads the reader to no where but boredom. I hate to say it, but Ann has list her touch. One gets the impression that she had planned to write about this murder case and despite the fact that it turned out to be an unworthy case to warrant 400 pages, she wrote it anyway and just threw it out there. it has no resolution, it delves I to the minutiae of people's lives for no reason, and at the end the reader is left baffled as to why she would even consider this a good read.

Wowwwwwww
By Richard Petsch
This book is truly a story that belongs in the marvel comic universe. The Silver Surfer who is one of my favorite characters finally made it to the big screen. This story has great appeal and great action. I recommend it to everyone. Galactus the planet eater is also part of the story which gives this new story even more zest and excitement. I will see the movie when it comes out in june. Can't wait!

Disappointing
By Viz
Warning, this may contain spoilers for the book if you are planning on reading it.

The Silver Surfer was introduced in Fantastic Four comic #48... The sequence played over the new few months to culminate in a final confrontation between the FF and Galactus, which caused the surfer to be bound to Earth. There are a lot of differences between the original story and this story, but we have seen that in all the recent Marvel movie adaptations.

The book itself appeared to be rushed to make it out when the movie hit the streets. The editor did a poor job of catching sentence structure and tense. The author did a poor job of keeping time sense and story content together as the book moved on (why else would he not want his real name associated with this book).

One chapter declares the FF have 48 hours to save the world. Later in the same chapter, they talk about several days passing since that deadline is mentioned.

Another section describes Johnny's powers swapping at touch, but yet he hugs Ben at one point and no power swap. Then later he touches all, including a dying Susan, to absorb all their powers and somehow retains his own for the upcoming fight with Victor Von Doom. Sounds like Super Skrull was inserted here.

Also, earlier we saw how the surfer transmuted Victor from the fight to another location because he was a pest, not because he was doing any real damage to the surfer, but when Victor had these same powers and was demonstrating powers that the surfer hadn't thought about, he seemed unable to pull off the same transmutation on Johnny when this fight was going on.

Also during this fight, Victor loses full track of Johnny as he becomes invisible, but Norrin Rad senses Susan in his cell even separated from his board.

Finally, Galatus (spelled Gah Lak Tus in the book) appears on the scene to absorb the world, but instead leaves to chase the surfer with no intervention from those on Earth. Very inconsistant since there is no reason found in the book to demonstrate why he should leave before absorbing all life from the planet.

In the midst of all this story, you have Victor Von Doom fighting for power and showing extreme jealousy of Reed and his love of Sue Storm. The original comics had it better with the contest of science between Reed and Victor (which is also mentioned in this series as a side note and secondary).

And rather than credit Reed's inventions and contributions as the means to financially back the FF (as in the comics), the book seems to think there is no money in science and instead makes Johnny the money maker with marketing ploys of FF merchandise.

The story is ok, but could have been much better if they had taken the time to edit it properly and remove the inconsistancies and grammer found throughout the book.

Obviously I think it could have been great if they had adapted the original line in the comics over that which I found here, but can acknowledge that some changes in the story are necessary over the years. I just wish they had thought them through before introducing them here, so there wouldn't be the rushed feeling found in the book.

A expanded and slightly different story then the movie
By Outlaw Star 5805
Having read both the Peter David book and this one I will say that the story lines in both books have expanded scenes, dialogs and changed some things that the movie edited (for time constraints or dragged the story down) to make the movie more dramatic and fast paced for the movie goer.

I.E the Doom vs surfer battle. The movie shows Doom regaining his humanity after being deposited in the cave after the battle while the book still has him as a disfigured Freddy Kruger clone. The movie also shorted Doom's conversation with the surfer before the battle as well.

IF you want a expanded storyline and scenes that the movie cut out or modified a bit then read this book, but IF you want a action packed movie then watch the DVD.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, May 2007: Not only does this latest collection of short stories from Jean Thompson have one of the best book titles I've come across in recent years, it's also a resonant and refreshingly unromantic portrait of women in every sort of role--ranging from the unpopular girl at school to a woman stuck in traffic to a modern-day Bonnie Parker. Throw Like a Girl is the kind of rare reading experience that makes you catch your breath with recognition as you meet each of these remarkable women, and Jean Thompson's taut, effervescent prose wakes you up to their most intimate details. --Anne Bartholomew

From Publishers Weekly
The women protagonists of Thompson's hard-hitting latest collection of stories (The Gasoline Wars; 1999 NBA finalist Who Do You Love) have, like the young army wife of "It Would Not Make Me Tremble to See Ten Thousand Fall," secret plans to wrest control of their life from husbands, boyfriends and mothers. Kelly Ann Pardee, a high school dropout stuck at home with a child while her army grunt husband is sent to the Middle East, wants to be a warrior, too. The teenage Jessie in "The Five Senses" has run off to Florida with an older man she is beginning to realize is violent and scary, and yet she is disappointed that her new fugitive existence isn't more exciting than her upper-middle-class life. Older women in these stories have been through the mill—of marriage, adultery, child-rearing. Mid-40s Melanie of "A Normal Life" marries Chad after a long affair, only to wonder if this new version of her lover is one she wants. In "Holy Week," seething sales agent Olivia Snow is too worn down by her job and single mom drudgery to upgrade her "subemployed musician" boyfriend or realize how at risk her 17-year-old daughter is. Thompson's talent is on full display. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Thompson now has written as many story collections as novels (four and four, that is), and it is primarily as a first-rate story writer that her name is being made. Her latest collection, gathering an even dozen stories, extends the realization that she is a sensitive, humorous, very informed chronicler--no, singer--of ordinary people in ordinary towns who face ordinary life issues, primarily relationships in familial and sexual forms (in other words, situations in which we all find ourselves). But Thompson's strength and attraction lie in her ability to spot the unique features of any of these situations. It wouldn't be wrong to also call her the poet of these unglamorous lives, given her pithy, poignant, yet often beautiful prose style. "Lost" may not be the best story in the collection, but it is exemplary. From the vantage point of years later, a grown woman narrates in the first person (her voice pitch-perfect for her character) about when she was 20 and had a good time with a "bad" boy. Time has passed quickly for her: "That quick, there goes your life, like a black-haired boy on a motorcycle, looking back until he's out of sight." Stories for any fiction reader. Brad Hooper

Stories That Strike The Right Notes
By Jill I. Shtulman
It's difficult to write a short story collection that captures attention. Alice Munro, Jhumpa Lahari, Margaret Atwood, Peter Ho Davies are a few writers that come to mind who do it well. Now I can add another one -- Jean Thompson.

Her stories are about women (not "phenomenal women", like another reviewer wrote)...just women who have gotten caught up in life. Some are emotionally unhealthy, some are finding their way, some are learning how to navigate life. The author is making no political statements here. Instead, she is taking us into their worlds -- and what worlds they are.

These are REAL characters who speak REAL dialogue and seem amazingly REAL. The little simple details bring them to life. Perhaps the best way to judge a short story collection is to ask yourself, "Do I care about what happens next? When I put this book down at night, do I want to pick it up again in the morning?" To these questions, I answer a resounding "yes." Each story sparkles; each captures attention. I'm glad I discovered this writer.

The wit and black humor of the title are splendidly sinister
By Elevate Difference
After being asked what she wanted for her readers to take away from Throw Like a Girl, Jean Thompson answered that she hoped they appreciate the "transforming power of literature, how can it remove us from the everyday world and let us see with new eyes." And this book does just that: it takes us away from the everyday world and then painfully drops us back with the suspicion that this fiction is actually very real.

The horrors of normalcy and the tedium of a common life are the forces that drive the majority of the characters in these twelve stories; our "heroines" are far from the romantic or ladylike ilk, but instead more like tough, strong and violent. On the opposite side stand the men in these accounts, mostly unsuccessful and lost, they portray what nobody wants and what most end up getting.

In "The Brat," a spooky but familiar story about teenage anger Iris, the twelve year old outcast main character that is not "pretty or smart or nicey-nice," hates everybody and everything, and we hate her; we hate her and we understand her because we have been there. This character, as most in this collection, is like we were, are or will be. All of these women have the urge to live, to act on their thoughts and to get what they really want, and we know that getting what you really want is a trap. We know that if we go for the cheese it will cut our heads off, and we do it anyways. Jean Thompson is the story teller of our own collective story.

Lust and boredom force Mel in "A Normal Life" to leave her children and husband to marry the man she was having a hot and heavy affair with just to go around in the circle of dissatisfaction, where she ceases being a "sexy siren" and instead becomes "just another nagging, squawking wife."

"The Family Barcus" analyzes the life of a perfect American family, with an obsessively optimistic father who eventually gives up on life. It's told in a first-person velvety prose that slips into the brain and tightly wraps it for a long time.

The wit and black humor of the title are splendidly sinister. Throw Like a Girl is a phenomenal account, and when you read it, you'll understand why it bears the title of the collection.

Comments on "The Brat" from Jean Thompson's Book Throw Like a Girl
By Barbara Jeanne Wilson
Comments on "The Brat."

"The Brat," Jean Thompson's first in the series of short stories in Throw Like a Girl is absolutely chilling. The reader is given the thoughts of 12-year-old Iris, a strange and rebellious little girl, whose best friend is an obese boy named Rico. Misery loves company, and these two children really complement one another.

Iris seems to hate everything and everybody. She is out of control -- a fearless rebel. She isn't remotely concerned about getting into trouble for being rude to her mother, nor does she seem to care what will happen to her after she, Rico and Barry write and deliver death threat notes to several of their classmates. Later, she is not worried about reprisals after she matter-of-factly kicks her brother in his private parts. Iris seems to be missing a conscience.

When the Jovanovich brothers come looking for a fight after school, Iris and Rico lock themselves in Rico's house. Iris isn't concerned about the Jovanoviches breaking into the house; she just wonders: "how hard you'd have to stab somebody to get a knife all the way through their clothes."

When Rico finds his mother's gun and gives it to Iris, she immediately begins thinking about whom she could shoot. She is on the second floor of Rico's house, and she points the loaded gun out the window at Mr. Ortiz (who has climbed high into a tree that has fallen on a garage next door to dismantle it), but then Iris decides that she likes Mr. Ortiz and won`t shoot him. Later, she calmly considers taking the gun home and shooting her mother or her brother. Iris displays ominous, sociopathic thought patterns, and her final act in the story is to unload the gun and throw bullets from the second floor of Rico's house at Jerry Jovanovich. The bullets clank loudly on the guttering, and Iris shouts "Bang! Bang!" The sudden noise and shouting may have startled Mr. Ortiz into losing his balance and falling.

The last sentence in the story is quite unique, and the author may have summed up the entire story in these few words: "In the corner of her eye, she (Iris) saw Mr. Ortiz struggle briefly to keep his balance, then topple over and fall with his arms outstretched and the ropes curling and snapping around him like banners." Iris is only vaguely aware of the effect of her thoughts and actions on others. And if she does know, she doesn't care. Mr. Ortiz, who represents society at large, is only concentrating on the job at hand and is oblivious to any danger posed by children, until it is too late to save himself and falls -- his tethers pulled loose -- his intentions (banners) waving meaninglessly in the air. The next generation, says Thompson, may be our downfall.

Thompson presents a vivid portrait of our current society, with all of its potential dangers and downdrafts. She concentrates specifically on our adolescents. The young are wandering through life untethered, she says. The single parents are working and have little time to engage in any meaningful parenting. The school officials are also fairly ineffective at solving the children's problems, and little communication occurs between the parents and the school counselors. Thompson presents a template for the reader to consider as reasons for the school shootings in this country of late. Using a thin line of cynical, icy humor, Jean Thompson lifts the camouflage of rationalization and spreads the truth out before us. I think it's an accurate, albeit a disturbing portrayal.
