When his L.A. neighborhood was threatened by gangbangers, Stanley Tookie Williams and a friend formed the Crips, but what began as protection became worse than the original gangs. Soon he was regularly under police surveillance, and, as a result, was arrested often, though always released because the charges did not stick. Stanley Tookie Williams, activist and author, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times and the Nobel Prize in literature four times. He is the only man in history to be nominated while imprisoned. He was executed in 2005.

The title of this book represents two extreme phases of my life.

"Blue Rage" is a chronicle of my passage down a spiraling path of Crip rage in South Central Los Angeles. "Black Redemption" depicts the stages of my redemptive awakening during my more than twenty-three years of imprisonment on California's death row. These memoirs of my evolution will, I hope, connect the reader to a deeper awareness of a social epidemic that is the unending nightmare of racial minorities in America and abroad as well.

Throughout my life I was hoodwinked by South Central's terminal conditions, its broad and deadly template for failure. From the beginning I was spoon-fed negative stereotypes that covertly positioned black people as genetic criminals -- inferior, illiterate, shiftless, promiscuous, and ultimately "three-fifths" of a human being, as stated in the Constitution of the United States. Having bought into this myth, I was shackled to the lowest socioeconomic rung where underprivileged citizens compete ruthlessly for morsels of the American pie -- a pie theoretically served proportionately to all, based on their ambition, intelligence, and perseverance.

Like many others I became a slave to a delusional dream of capitalism's false hope: a slave to dys-education (see Chapter 5); a slave to nihilism; a slave to drugs; a slave to black-on-black violence; and a slave to self-hate. Paralyzed within a social vacuum, I gravitated toward thughood, not out of aspiration but out of desperation to survive the monstrous inequities that show no mercy to young or old. Aggression, I was to learn, served as a poor man's merit for manhood. To die as a street martyr was seen as a noble thing.

In 1971, I met Raymond Lee Washington (may he rest in peace) and we ultimately decided to unite our homeboys from the west and east sides of South Central to combat neighboring street gangs. (An erroneous grapevine suggests that the Crips formed in 1969, or even as early as the 1950s.) Most Crips themselves are unaware that the original name for our alliance was "Cribs," a name selected from a list of many options. But the short-lived label of "Cribs" was carelessly mispronounced by many of us and morphed into the name "Crips," our permanent identity.

Most of us were seventeen years of age.

The Crips mythology has many romanticized, bogus accounts. I never thought it would be necessary to address such issues. But I can set the record straight -- for Raymond Washington, for me, and for others who fought and often died for this causeless cause.

I assumed that everyone in South Central knew that Raymond was the leader of the East Side Crips, and that I was the leader of the West Side Crips. A few published chronicles have Raymond attending Washington High School and uniting the neighborhood west side gangs where he supposedly resided. In fact, Raymond attended Fremont High School on the east side, where he lived. A fundamental inquiry would have revealed that I lived on the west side, where I attended Washington High and rallied our homeboys and groups of local gangs. Even our former rivals have a better understanding of the Crips' origins than many social historians.

Most of the public misinformation has been fostered by academics, journalists and other parasitical opportunists, stool pigeons, and wannabe Crip founders who shamelessly seek undue profit and recognition for gang genocide. There is no honor in insinuating yourself as a player in this legacy of bloodletting where your feet have never trod.

Another version incorrectly documents the Crips as an offshoot of the Black Panther Party. No Panther Party member ever mentioned the Crips (or Cribs) as being a spin-off of the Panthers. It is also fiction that the Crips functioned under the acronym C.R.I.P., for Community Resource Inner-City Project or Community Revolutionary Inner City Project. (Words such as "revolutionary agenda" were alien to our thuggish, uninformed teenage consciousness.) We did not unite to protect the community; our motive was to protect ourselves and our families.

There are people who say it was karmic justice that Raymond and I, who impinged on society in 1971 with a violent pact, deserved our exit from society in 1979 -- Raymond to the grave and myself to San Quentin State Prison. They cry out that I am incapable of redemption. My detractors' attitude toward my redemption is driven largely by my open apology (see the apology at www.tookie.com) to black folks and others whom I have offended by my helping to create the Crips over thirty-three years ago. My detractors argue that I could not be redeemed because I have not apologized to the family members of the victims I was convicted of killing.

Please allow me to clarify.

I will never apologize for capital crimes that I did not commit -- not even to save my life. And I did not commit the crimes for which I was sentenced to be executed by the State of California.

Being a condemned prisoner, I am viewed among the least able to qualify as a promoter of redemption and of peace. But the most wretched among society can be redeemed, find peace, and reach out to others to lift them up. Real redemption cannot be faked or intellectualized. It must be subjective: experienced, and then shared.

In the past, redemption was an alien concept to me. But from 1988 until 1994, while I lived in solitary confinement, I embarked on a transitional path toward redemption. I underwent years of education, soul-searching, edification, spiritual cultivation, and fighting to transcend my inner demons.

Subsequently the redeeming process for me symbolized the end of a bad beginning -- and a new start. In time I developed a conscience that empowered me to think beyond the selfish "I" principle. Armed with new insight, I discovered the means to control my ego, which enabled me to reunite with God; to reclaim my humanity; to discover inner peace; and to find my raison d'être -- my reason to be.

Since then, I have written nine antigang and antiviolence books for children, created the Internet Project for Street Peace -- an international peer mentoring program that links high-risk youth in other countries to their counterparts in the United States -- and wrote a Local Street Peace Protocol that provides guidance on how to initiate a gang truce and is available to anyone who chooses to download it from my website at www.tookie.com.

Yes, redemption has resurrected me from a spiritual and mental death. And whether people are able to accept my redemption or not, they can never take it away. God chooses to redeem, not the laws of the government, the media, the sanctimonious, or the vindictive.

To be redeemed, I have learned, is to be at peace with oneself. In fact, true virtue is self-victory by a path of redemption to peace.

To avoid damaging others, certain names, nicknames, and quite a few well-known incidents have been excluded from Blue Rage, Black Redemption. For the same reason I have used pseudonyms for some of the people I include in this book. Otherwise, the story I tell is true.

It started out as a gray Friday morning, and as I rushed into a West Oakland McDonald's to grab a breakfast sandwich, I heard the commotion coming from a table of older black gentlemen in the back of the restaurant. "If he killed those people, he ought to die," said one. "Well, whether he did it or not, if he stays locked up for the rest of his life, that ain't living," said another. "He might as well be dead." Although I tried to avoid this breakfast-table debate, as soon as I was spotted I was summoned to the table.

"Tavis Smiley, what are you doing here?" One brother yelled out. "We're talking about that gang leader Tookie Williams who is supposed to be executed for killing those people in L.A. back in the day." "So, Smiley," asked another, "what do you think? Should he die?"

The whole scene was surreal. I had just flown into Oakland International Airport that morning and, ironically, my radio producer and I were on our way to San Quentin to meet with Stanley Tookie Williams. He asked to meet me in person before doing an interview that would be aired on both my radio and television shows. It was November 25, 2005, the day after Thanksgiving, and I was already riding a sea of emotions long before being confronted by the breakfast club. Of all the McDonald's we could have chosen.

The truth is, at that moment, I wasn't sure how to respond to the brother's question. All I knew for sure is that I am vehemently opposed to the death penalty and, as a person of faith, I believe in the scripture where God says, "Vengeance is mine." So, without going into too much more detail, that was my answer as I wished the brothers a good day.

As I got back in the car, I started thinking about the morning ahead. Although unfortunately I've visited friends or family members in jail over the years, fortunately I had never been to death row. I wasn't sure what to expect. But as for Stanley, I had a little bit of insight. When Jamie Foxx came on my television show, he talked about what it was like to portray Stanley in the television movie Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story. Jamie also told me that in spite of Stanley's imposing figure -- a massive chest and bulging arms and legs from bodybuilding -- Stanley was very gentle and soft-spoken.

When we arrived at San Quentin a short while later, I found all of that to be true. After going through two metal detectors and security doors, we waited in a small visitors' cell that held an old table, a few chairs, and a small barred window that looked out onto the bay. A few minutes later, a guard escorted the shackled, gentle, soft-spoken bodybuilder with glasses and gray hair to the cell. After his cuffs were unlocked, he reached out, shook my hand, and said, "I'm Stan, and I've been waiting to meet you."

As we sat down, Stan immediately opened the window and we began to talk. We talked briefly about the childhood he discusses at length in this book. We talked about what it was like to be in prison for nearly twenty-five years -...

BLUE RAGE- A HISTORICAL JOURNEY

Tookie Williams seeks to set the record straight as to the origins of the Crips and the true founders of the gang. Williams spends a considerable amount of time detailing the fictional accounts of the gang which have emerged over the years. Some of which have been offered up to improve the credibility or support some project the authors of such stories were involved with. As should be expected of a man in his position, the stories are muted in concern to the violence committed by Tookie himself and he takes it to the limit declaring he had a strong dislike of guns and refused to have them around him. His telling of his relationship with Curtis Morrow 'Mr. Buddha' was excellent and at times strangely touching. Much remains to be said of the legacy Mr. Williams will foster out of his professed redemption, but this is a much better telling than any of the previous works offered on the formation of the crips.

Book is "meh"

I bought this book hoping for insight into the gang mentality and how a person can break free of the life and turn his life around.
Having read it, I understand why his appeals for clemency were denied. He showed no remorse for the crimes he committed, in fact, admitted to very little criminal activity at all, besides fighting with other gangsters and jacking up drug dealers.
I almost tossed this book in the trash when he stated in chapter 28 that fellow prisoner George Jackson was "murdered by a prison snipers bullet" and completely left out the fact Jackson murdered six people (3 of them guards) and wounded 3 others in an escape attempt from the prison.
This book was self serving and showed little redemption in my opinion.
Remorse stems from a desire to be a better person and to stop hurting yourself and those around you. Regret is merely from the consequences of misdeeds. I didn't perceive any remorse, I did, however, sense his regret at being held accountable.

Lets get a few things straight....

Many people have a tendency to speak about things that they have no prior info about the subject. I see that is the case here. here are the facts.

-For over 25 years, even to is death, Tookie denies killing those 4 people.

-Tookie has apologiezed for creating the crips.

-He has tried to undo what he helped create by writing books.

[Why he should have been saved]

Tookie didn't want clemecy because he thought it was a better punishment for him. He wanted it so he couls continue his work. I am a "At-Risk" teenager, and I personally would listen to the creator of the crips about gangs, rather than listen to some white guy in a tie. Even if he did do the crimes that he was charged with, who are we to say he deserves to die? Last time I checked, someone named God makes those decisions.

Can there be too much of a good thing? Hart's second novel, the follow-up to her superb debut, Haunted Ground (2003), again sends American forensic pathologist Nora Galvin deep into Ireland's west country to sort out the mystery of a body found in a peat bog--or, as it turns out, two bodies, one ancient and one contemporary, but both bearing the signs of ritual murder in keeping with Ireland's pagan past. That conundrum drives the action in another detail-rich, character-centered mix of local history and tangled human relationships. As Nora and her lover and colleague, archaeologist Cormac Maguire, attempt to reconstruct the lives of the two peat-preserved corpses, they must confront the strains in their own relationship and in those of several families living in the isolated region of Loughnabrone ("Lake of Sorrows") Bog. There is almost too much going on here--too many complex characters, each with the potential to hold up his or her own novel; too many tantalizing historical threads, each deserving a more thorough untangling. But to say that this novel is not quite as focused as its predecessor is not to say that it isn't full of riches for readers who savor the multidimensionality of literary fiction. Look not necessarily to other crime authors for comparisons to Hart's work but rather to such mainstream novelists as Canadian Donna Morrisey (Kit's Law, Downhill Chance), who also use local history as the lever with which to pry open the human heart. It's not often these days, since I discovered my affinity for historical fiction four years ago, that I'll read a novel set in modern times. To be honest, anything past 1900 is pushing it a little bit for me. But because of the historical connection in Erin Hart's first novel "Haunted Ground" I was dragged into her mystery series featuring pathologists Nora Gavin and archeologist Corwin Maguire, both of whom are obsessed with the rare treasures that occasionally turn up in Ireland's bogs-particularly the human remains, which are so well preserved from the chemical process of the bog that much can be learned from them about the era the person lived in.

So after enjoying the first novel so much I had no choice but to proceed to the second, "Lake of Sorrows" which features an iron age body that apparently underwent a triple death (three methods of murder when any one of them would have been sufficient to kill the victim) and a more recent murder victim found only 100 yards away. But it isn't just these two bodies that has captured our main characters interests, it's the many strange occurrences going on around the large bog which borders the lake of sorrows, rumors of gold found years ago that was never turned over to the authorities as it should have been, strange characters who no one in the community trusts and soon more murders, which leaves one of our favorite non-detective sleuths as an excellent suspect.

Though unlike its predecessor this novel does not explore events of the past through music it is still a strong current through the book, as is the environment itself. You can practically breathe in Ireland, the amazing and the mundane, the parts avoided and given up as worthless which are really those that contain the greatest treasures for seekers of the past, and of course the people themselves. Hart is very complete when it comes to creating her characters; even minor players have fully fleshed personalities with true, inner secret lives that every real person has, creating a sense of intense solitude around the people in spite of what inter personal connections they may have.

I have to say that the mystery in this book, while engaging, was not (in my opinion) explained enough in advance to give the reader any chance of solving it on their own (which in my mind every good mystery should have.) And so I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the first book. But I still look forward immensely to the third novel in the series and the confrontation and closure that Nora hopefully gains in it.

The combination of today and history is well done and keeps the reader involved with the mystery both old and new. The relationship between the male and female protagonists is as complex as the plot. The secondary characters are fleshed out and not cardboard cutouts. I'm already ready for #5.

It's fun listening to Lee Iacocca's gravelly voice scold us for the mess we're in. His curmudgeonly conversational style and idiomatic language make us feel as though grandfather is venting at us. His lists of complaints include Iraq and the lies that got us there, dependency on foreign oil, democracy undermined, grossly incompetent political appointees, eco-disastrous policies, deficit insanity, etc. He holds special venom for Cheney's pretense of distance from Halliburton's humongous profits from no-bid, no accountability contracts. But he holds irresponsible nonvoters and mindless voters responsible for it all. He exhorts us to listen carefully to presidential candidates and to apply to them his nine Cs of leadership: do they have curiosity, creativity, communication skills, character, courage, conviction, charisma, competence and common sense? Iacocca is outraged. Now 82, he has seen the U.S. overcome some of its worst crises, including the Great Depression and World War II, through great leadership. As the CEO of Chrysler Corporation, he brought the company back from the brink of bankruptcy and worked with the government to overcome the fallout from the 1970s oil crisis. Now, he says, our government has fallen under the grip of arrogant ideologues and spineless detractors. Our business leaders are more obsessed with stock options and trumping each other's multimillion-dollar salaries than with finding creative solutions to pressing problems, such as the health-care crisis, our loss of competitive edge in the global marketplace, the massive trade deficit, and the slow death of the middle class. He describes his frustration as his successor at Chrysler sold out to Daimler-Benz, and the once proud, independent company lost its soul. Although Iacocca presents a brutal analysis of cronyism in Washington, D.C., the abysmal situation in Iraq, and failed policies at home, he is not a pessimist. Excellent Societal Insights From a Great Leader!

Iacocca comes out with both guns blazing from page one, and never stops til the last page. Iacocca provides readers with a clear, concise summary of our major problems - escalating healthcare costs and deficits, a border that is a sieve, an energy crisis, losing manufacturing to Asia, leadership that doesn't face these key issues (instead the Senate debates flag-burning for three days, while giving no time to Iacocca's concerns), and a President given a free pass to ignore the Constitution and tap our phones after leading us to war on a pack of lies.

Iacocca then goes on to provide clear and credible recommendations for each of these problems, and along the way offers his own framework (eg. curiosity, creative, courage, competent, common sense) for describing/evaluating leadership and then uses that framework to succinctly assess Bush II and the major candidates vying to take his place.

Another major "Where Have All the Leaders Gone?" suggestion is that Congress take a year off and pass no new legislation - instead evaluate programs that already exist. Iacocca points out that the "War on Drugs" has consumed about $1 trillion, while little, if anything has been accomplished. And what has been accomplished, he asks, of maintaining an on-going decades-long feud with Castro?

The "bad news" is that Iacocca once considered running for President, but was talked out of it by then House Speaker (and friend) Tip O'Neill. O'Neill told Iacocca that the job would drive him nuts - too hard to get anything done (basically the same comment President Truman offered then General Eisenhower). Nonetheless, the "good news" is that Iacocca's lessons in leadership skills couldn't help but be invaluable to moving America forward.

Say it ain't so, Lido!!!

After reading the original Iacocca: An Autobiography that was written in 1984 and enjoying it, I figured I would follow it up with this newer book. For those unfamiliar, Lee Iacocca is the very successful and charismatic former president of both the Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Motors.
My advice for anyone considering reading this book would be to skip it if you are not a Lee Iacocca fan. If you admire the man and his accomplishments like I do, give it a read but be prepared to stick it out through the first few chapters because he comes off very bitter and curmudgeon-y. Iacocca does the whole "In my day..." typed-rants and goes on about how much he hates the state America is in, which was kind of disappointing considering how his success was so dependent on The American Way. Although most of his vitriol is directed at George W. Bush, whom Iacocca unabashedly despises, the first half of the book gives a glimpse of the famous personal grudges for which Iacocca is known - but not much more. The second half of the book gets better and has a milder tone similar to that of Iacocca: An Autobiography, but this book pales in comparison to his first.

Answer: They've gone into hiding!

Review: "Where Have All the Leaders Gone?"

For the past several years, I have been wringing my hands about the growing dearth of leadership in our nation. I suspect this arises as education snobbery pushes common sense aside in favor of intellectualism. When I learned that Lee Iacocca, one of our greatest contemporary leaders, was similarly concerned and had authored a book on the subject, I was eager to read it. I was confident that he would have some good ideas and would offer some sound advice.

Discouragingly, I was wrong.

Where have all the leaders gone? I wonder if the author chose the title, since the book does not give us a direct answer. On the chance that was because he could not figure it out, here is my answer: They have gone into hiding, Lee, just like you!

According to his memoirs, as documented here, Lee Iacocca had at least three opportunities to serve his country in government and in positions as high as President. His reasons for passing on those solicitations were the same as usually uttered by other very capable people; they are not confident about their ability to participate effectively in the degradingly duplicitous and disingenuous management system that we currently call "politics." That, of course, has left leadership positions open to those who are comfortable in that paradigm. Hence today's situation.

As an alternative, he recommends that we all get more conscientious about voting, and evaluate candidates much more critically before going to the polls. Gee; thank's Lee. We never thought of that!

I'm sorry, but we're tired of rolling up our sleeves and donning our thinking caps to evaluate - as Jerry Brown cleverly put it over ten years ago - "the evil of two lessers." Since people of your caliber choose to excuse themselves, our role defaults to bottom-fishing. Carp, mud puppies and other scavengers; all junk fish with no fight in them, and never worthy of our table. Not worth fishing for! Why bother?

The last sentence in the book is, "Won't you join me?" My first take on that was surprise: 'join you in what?' However, on second thought, I guess my answer is, "Yes." We are all doing the same thing as you. We are bitching and complaining, but keeping far enough away from the mud-wrestling pit that we will not get splattered.

Harry Truman was a lot like Lee Iacocca in many ways - common, practical, decisive, responsible and plain talking. Wonder where we would be today had he felt the same way and let things default to lesser men.

The above notwithstanding, I give Lee's book high marks.

First, because the author is Lee Iacocca, a staunch, real life American icon - someone with a story every youngster should know about. Second, because there is so much more in the book that in conversations with family and friends, no matter what the topic, I currently find myself mentioning what Iacocca had to say. I guess that means I think what he had to say on those things is worth knowing about.

That sentence wouldn't be out of place in any of Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels, all of which have been distinguished by their elegiac tone, but it's only fitting that it should appear in his latest, a heartfelt post-Katrina ode to a lost New Orleans and a lost world. In a sense, Dave Robicheaux, Burke's Cajun detective, whose heart is in the past and whose eyes are on the horizon, expecting trouble, has always been anticipating Katrina--or at least some form of cataclysm--as he has watched his world spin further and further out of control. The plot itself, the investigation of the murder of two black men in the ninth ward, hinges on familiar Burke tropes--the powerless caught in a web of circumstance; surprising acts of nobility from the least likely people; unfathomable evil prompting eruptions of Robicheaux's thinly suppressed rage--but the novel's power comes from the way it explores the tragedy of Katrina in a way that is perfectly in tune with the series, a kind of perfect storm brought together by the confluence of fictional and nonfictional realms. The real deal...

I think that James Lee Burke outdid himself with his latest Dave Robicheaux mystery, The Tin Roof Blowdown. Burke has often used the backdrop of New Orleans for his often dark and tortured books. But no fictional event could have provided as much material as Hurricane Katrina did in 2005.

Dave Robicheaux is a detective with the New Iberia Sheriff's Department, outside of New Orleans. When Katrina hits the Crescent City, all outside law enforcement agencies sent available officers to aid with the chaos that resulted. Robicheaux spent time in Viet Nam, but nothing he saw in war could have prepared him for what he witnessed in New Orleans. When he left Nam, he thought he would "never again have to witness the wide-scale suffering of innocent civilians, nor the betrayal and abandonment of our countrymen when they need us the most. But that was before Katrina. That was before a storm with greater impact than the bomb blast that struck Hiroshima peeled the face off southern Louisiana."

In The Tin Roof Blowdown, bounty hunter and Robicheaux friend, Cletus Purcel, is trying to pick up some bail skips right before Katrina hits. But the same men that Purcel is after end up being wanted for a host of other crimes as well. Not only that, but they've stolen a fortune from the top Mafioso in New Orleans. So not only are the cops looking for them, but some unsavory characters are as well. How these characters all converge is vintage Burke.

One of the things I like best about Burke's books is that he makes the locale a major player in his stories. He has a love/hate relationship with New Orleans and calls her the Whore of Babylon. When driving through the ruined streets, he muses "New Orleans had been a song, not a city. Like San Francisco, it didn't belong to a state; it belonged to a people." He describes southern Louisiana with lush brushstrokes, from the bayous to the wildlife to the marshes. But where he outdoes himself in The Tin Roof Blowdown is in his descriptions of post-Katrina New Orleans. No pictures that you may have seen will accurately tell the story of what happened to this historic city as well as Burke does in narrative form. It is that vivid and that horrible.

James Lee Burke tends to publish a new Robicheaux every July. Fortunately for us, while prolific in his writing, he isn't publishing books just to meet a deadline. The Tin Roof Blowdown is the real deal.

Excellent setting & characters, depth of insight

I lived in New Orleans for >20years pre-Katrina. I had dear friends who bravely served NOLA during/after Katrina: an insurance agent, a young National Guardsman who worked at/around the Superdome during/after the storm, and a nurse who chose to stay at her post for the storm. Each suffered and survived the panic, disorder, fear, etc. described in this book. They also witnessed and experienceed moments of grace when least expected. The mystery holds the book together well. The chilling descriptions of what desperate people can do is true. Well done.

Best of the Dave Robicheaux Series

Best of the Dave Robicheaux series. Less characters than his other books, and I love how he intertwined actual events within the story itself. It's been a while since I was invested in Alafaire, but she has a really good storyline and is well-written. The only character I haven't fallen in love with is Molly, and I can't quite put my finger on the "why." Of course, Bootsie was a hard act to follow. The series was my summer reading list, and so far this is my favorite.

Lewis lay in the darkened bedroom, under the blankets, trying to control his nervous breathing. He stared at Monica. She was beautiful -- her light brown skin, big black eyes, and full pink lips. But she lay next to him, silent.

He was waiting on her decision.

Lewis tried to stop telling himself that it still was too soon, but this week he had bought the ring anyway and, moments ago, presented it to her.

She had been asleep only five minutes when Lewis pulled the ring out from under his pillow, slipped it on her finger, then kissed her.

Monica stirred. Lewis kissed her again till she had woken.

"Are you okay?" Monica asked, her voice groggy.

"Will you?" Lewis said, smiling.

"What? Will I what?"

"Will you marry me, baby?"

There was no answer. That had been like a minute ago, and still no answer came.

Lewis rolled over in bed, turned on his bedside lamp.

When he turned back, he saw Monica, her black hair falling into her eyes, staring down at the ring with a pained expression.

"What's the matter?" Lewis said. "It's a simple question. Yes or no."

"You know it's more complicated than that."

"No I don't," Lewis said, throwing the blankets off and climbing out of bed. "Just answer it."

"I haven't even been divorced a year yet. I'm not trying to jump back into a marriage this minute."

"Or you aren't trying to jump back into marriage with me?"

"Lewis," Monica said, turning, glancing at the alarm clock. "I'm not having this conversation. It's almost two in the morning."

"Fine," Lewis said, moving his tall brown frame to the dresser and sliding open a drawer. He pulled out a pair of jeans, put them on.

"What are you doing?" Monica said, sitting up.

"I asked you to be with me. You said you don't want to, so I'm leaving." He pulled a T-shirt over his muscled torso.

Monica hurried out of bed, around to him. "I didn't say that. I said I wasn't ready to get married yet."

"It's the same thing."

Lewis had on shoes now. He moved quickly through the room, grabbing a bag, stuffing it full of the first clothes he yanked from the closet.

"Where are you going?" Monica asked after Lewis opened the bedroom door.

"I don't know. We'll find a place."

Monica halted there in her nightgown. "What do you mean, we?"

"I'm not leaving my daughter here with you. You don't want me, you don't want her either," he said, staring right in her eyes, as if expecting this to change Monica's decision.

Lewis turned, walked down the hall toward the three-year-old's room.

Monica followed behind him, whispering, "Why are you doing this?"

Lewis carefully opened his daughter's bedroom door. Inside, a night-light burned, painting the entire room a dim gold color.

He bent over her small bed, slid his arms under her, and scooped Layla up in her blankets.

Monica pulled on his arm.

"Don't. Don't do this now. At least wait till the morning."

"So you can say no then." Lewis turned to her, the child in his arms. "You know what'll make me stay. Just say yes."

Monica loved the man and his daughter. She didn't want them to leave. But she could not let herself be manipulated into agreeing to marry him. She dropped her head. "I can't do that right now."

Lewis held out his palm.

Monica glanced down at it. "What?"

"The ring, please."

Five A.M. Tori Billups lay in the center of her king bed, staring through the darkness toward the ceiling, her eyes filled with tears.

She clutched one of her pillows tight to her breast as though it were her husband, who had been missing now for seven days.

He would call, she told herself, the cordless phone just to her left on the nightstand. But until now, he had not.

One morning a week ago, after she had made Glenn breakfast, had handed him his briefcase and kissed him on the lips, he walked out the front door to take a business flight to Detroit. He did not return.

"He'll be back," Tori's girlfriend told her after he had been gone for two days. She held Tori's head in her lap, smoothed her hand over Tori's sandy brown hair, trying to comfort her. "Maybe his plane got rerouted and he lost his cell phone. He'll be back, girl."

But as Tori lay there, wetting Sarah's skirt with her tears, she didn't believe the words her friend said to her.

The next day, Tori went to the police to file a missing persons report.

"The moment we hear anything, we'll call you... Mrs. Billups," a square-jawed, graying detective named Reynolds said, having to glance down at the paperwork to remember Tori's name.

She returned home, sat in a kitchen chair for hours, staring at the phone, crying.

"Why are you doing this to me?!" she screamed, grabbing the glass pepper shaker from the table and slinging it across the room, where it shattered against the far kitchen wall.

When she first met Glenn, Tori had only been in the small California city of Torrance for two months. She had fled Chicago with more money than she thought she'd ever see in her life, and she wanted to make a new beginning for herself.

She bought a house and settled in.

The first month had been bearable. She allowed her thoughts to be consumed with what color to paint the walls, the style of living room furniture, and whether the blinds she hung should be vertical or horizontal.

The following month, loneliness had found her. Most often it was at night, while she lay in bed alone, after spending the entire day by herself.

She wanted love again but was afraid.

One night she suffered from a terrible migraine. She walked into the bathroom in her slippers and robe to take some medication. Standing in front of the open medicine cabinet, she eyed the bottle of Tylenol. She pulled out the bottle of prescription sleeping pills instead, thinking, Maybe if I just slept.

Tori shook one into her palm, then two. She paused, looking up into the mirror, thinking about her lonely nights. They were becoming insufferable. If she wanted, she would never have to deal with them again.

Tori tilted the bottle, letting the remainder of the pills fall into her hand.

She grabbed the glass of water from the edge of the sink. It would take just two quick motions -- pills, water. Down her throat they'd go, she'd fall off to sleep, and she'd never be lonely again.

That night, Tori stopped herself and was glad she did. For if she hadn't, she wouldn't have known Glenn.

She met him in the cookie aisle at the grocery store.

"Which are better? Chips Ahoy or Oreos?" he said, holding a bag of each.

It was a come-on line, but Tori was lonely, and the man was strangely cute, with squinty eyes and a deep dimple in his right cheek.

She stopped her empty cart, leaned on its handle, allowed herself to play the game.

"Why ask me? You're the one that has to eat 'em," Tori said.

"You're right. Then I guess there's only one way to find out." He opened the bags, pulled a cookie from each, and took bites from both.

Tori could not help but laugh.

"Have one?" he said.

"I think I will."

Two weeks later, Tori lay in her bed, receiving a good-night kiss from Glenn after the first time they made love.

Four months after that, as they walked hand in hand at dusk down a wooded bike trail, Glenn stopped, pulled a ring from his pocket, lowered himself to one knee, and proposed.

"Yes," Tori said, a lump in her throat so big, she thought she would choke.

She had fallen in love with this man, even after Chicago, even after she had endured the hateful things Nate Kenny, the last man she loved, had done to her. Now Tori was in love again and getting married.

Two months after their wedding, Glenn told his wife, "I'm going to start my own consulting firm. Why do for them what I can do for myself?"

She held her husband's hand tight from across the kitchen table, smiled, proud of him. He was brilliant and already a success, could have run the financial consulting firm he worked for by himself.

"I just have to find some investors. This is gonna cost," Glenn said.

"Don't you worry about the cost or the investors," Tori said, taking both his hands in hers. The money Tori had left Chicago with amounted to well over a million dollars. She had wondered how she would invest it. Now she knew.

"What are you talking about?" Glenn said.

"I have a little something in the bank that I've been waiting to do something with."

"Are you sure?" he said.

"Positive," Tori said, smiling.

Glenn threw his arms around his wife.

His hands on her shoulders, he said, "Then we're partners. Okay, honey. You and me!"

Tori now turned her head away from the clock: 5:08 A.M.

It had been almost eight days and no word from her husband. An image of his face, covered with blood, flashed in her mind. His body was twisted, clothes torn. He lay in a Dumpster, shot in the chest.

The phone rang.

Tori gasped, rolled in bed, lunged for the receiver, pressed it to her face. "Glenn!"

"Mrs. Billups?" a firm voice said.

Tori was hesitant, frightened. "Yes."

"This is Detective Reynolds. You need to come to the city morgue. We found a man matching your husband's description."

Then it was all true, Tori thought two hours later as she was being led down a narrow tiled hallway, under bright fluorescent lights. Someone had killed Glenn, robbed him, taken everything from him, and left his body in the trash.

That's where the detective said the unidentified body had been found, and it explained why Tori's credit card had been declined yesterday when she had tried to buy groceries.

She had reached into her purse, tried the other three she had.

"I'm sorry, ma'am," the cashier said to her. "They've all been declined."

"All of my money has been stolen," Tori had told Sarah later that day, pacing frantically in front of her.

"I'm sorry," Sarah had said, stepping to Tori, her arms open. "It's not your fault you trusted him with your money."

"Who are you talking about?"

"Your husband. Isn't that why he hasn't -- "

"No! You don't know him. He wouldn't do that!"

No spoiler. This is the sequel to Million Dollar Divorce and it just as juicy. This is a good quick summer read. Twist and turns you will not want to put down.

It's HOT!

This book has everything you could want. If you liked The Million Dollar Divorce, you will love The Million Dollar Deception. Nate is even more devious than in the last book. Lewis, not to be out done, does more than his fair share of dirt. And if that's not enough, there is lots of intrigue, thrills and drama. Oh, how could I forget the hot sex. I couldn't put it down. I read the book in two nights. I think all readers will be shockingly pleased and surprised at the ending. I was. Get ready to live in a state of anticipation until the final installment is published. I can't wait.

Disappointing (this may spoil some things if you still choose to read this book)

I would like to start off by saying that in the past I have really enjoyed reading RM Johnson's books. I have read several and all have pleased me. However, Million Dollar Deception was a mess. I can't believe that a book I was so excited to read was such a big let down. I do not remember Million Dollar Divorce being filled with such buffoonery.

The book started off good enough but by the final chapters I was wondering if I was just as foolish as the characters for finishing the book. But I spent money on this book so I refused to stop reading at the last four chapters. I just can't understand why Monica would even consider taking Nate back. This man paid someone else to have sex with you just so he wouldn't have to give over his money. He took prescription pills so he couldn't get an erection, trying to make you feel like crap. And lets not forget he raped you. Did every character in the book forget this. I sure as hell didn't. Tabatha is a horrible friend for even letting Monica consider going back to him. But I even looked past that and said, hey, they were married for 4 years, there could still be feelings.

My biggest issue in this book was that they were being deceitful when it wasn't necessary. Monica lied to Lewis about seeing Nate and she could have told Lewis the truth. So what if he comes over to their house. Why did Lewis continue to lie to Monica about taking out money? I still don't see why he couldn't tell her about Layla's grandmother and Aunt wanting custody, that plot was just dumb. Then the $50,000 issue. He could have told her from the start. Even after Lewis found out the truth from Kia and Freddy he could have told Monica then and had her go to Nate's house with Freddy and make Nate confess. Just like another reviewer said, it appeared the characters would do anything just to make the plot work.

The last chapter really pushed me over the edge. I was rooting for Freddy so hard and for him to make such a dumb move, I was left screaming WTF. So now the only character that I felt bad for becomes a psychopath. I kept asking why couldn't Freddy just ask Monica and Nate for help. I know men have pride and don't like asking for help but you rather stab your best friend in the back. Hmmm... I'm not buying it.

This book was too unbelievable for me.

I almost want to read the third book just so Johnson can redeem himself but after reading the description I don't know if I want to be bothered. I haven't been this pissed off with a book since I read one of those books that clearly doesn't have an editor and looks as if a five year old wrote it.

If you like books that are just filled to the brim with Drama and action but nothing really makes sense this is a great read. The drama DOES NOT stop rolling. However, if you would take less action and actually have characters that would make real life decisions this is not it.

As Nicholas campaigns to improve conditions and fund research at Bellevue Hospital, he's drawn into Samuels secret life, saving Mei Huas life after a botched abortion and later delivering her daughter. This highly entertaining novel suffers whenever the villainous Samuel is not on the scene, and though the last hundred pages drop off in intensity, theres still much to commend in Swerlings great eye for detail, convincing and conniving characters, and subplots that really flesh out 19th-century New York. Acclaimed historical novelist Swerling submits the latest installment in her series of fictional treatments of early American history, following City of Dreams (2001), Shadowbrook (2004), and City of Glory (2007). The time period in her new novel is the 1830s to the 1850s, and the narrative finds its location in the tumultuous New York City of poor immigrants in unsanitary neighborhoods, high-society matrons in luxurious mansions, and entrepreneurs in businesses growing wealthier by the day. As in previous volumes in the series, the author maintains a focus, within the maelstrom of New York life, on two related but competitive families with long ties to the city and its development. One flash point between the two families is a husband who attends to his Chinese mistress while neglecting his wife, the latter of whom, years later, goes on to marry across the family divide; the other flash point is the question of who from within the two families can capture control of Jacob Astor’s lucrative shipping business. The general issues of the day, which both families must deal with, to varying extents, include slavery and abolitionism, religious conflict, technological advancement, progress in health and medicine, and organized labor. In keeping with the series’ traditions, the plot here is long and involved but rich in period detail, with characters brought to vivid but not melodramatic color. Expect high demand. --Brad Hooper

Such a great book. I love historical fiction and this combined New York of old with a great story of family and passion. A great read.

A wonderfully compelling read

I don't usually go in for historical novels, but I found Beverly Swerling's latest, City of God, impossible to put down. In addition to a marvelously well-conceived plot, Swerling also gives us a fascinating window into early American medical history, as well as the cultural development of her beloved Manhattan. I loved how all the characters' plot threads got woven together. It's exactly the way I imagine history unfolding, only much more fun.

This novel would make an excellent movie. I could see it in my mind's eye as I was reading.

This is the third book in the series I have read which traces the life and times from old New Ansterdam to New York, and follows family sagas, medical progress (or lack thereof) and shows what life was really like in those times. Beverly Swerling has done an outstanding job. I might be prejudiced in favor of this series, having been born in a hospital in Brooklyn and lived the first fourteen years of my life at Rockaway Beach, Queens, Long Island, N.Y.
