Sexy!
By Jodi N. Swenson
I find that most romance novels are either incredibly steamy with a bland story line, or that they have an interesting story line and very bland love scenes. This book was sexy, and it had an entertaining story line. I could not put this book down, and ended up staying really late in the process.

I read Never Deceive a Duke first, and I wish I would have read them in order because I liked that book even better after reading this one.

Mr Kemble is my Favorite character! He had me laughing out loud a lot. I hope to read more of him.

My one problem with this book was while I believe Xanthia and Nash had an intensely passionate sexual relationship, I wasn't totally convinced that they loved each other. They did have chemistry, but there was so much sex and so very little talking.

I can't wait to read Never Romance a Rake!

Relax, lie back and think of England....
By ChefCheyanne
This is a delightful, big old chunk of a book that refuses to be hurried. The author is a master of this genre and not for a moment will your reading pleasure be taken for granted. We care greatly for the male/female leads seeing in both of them the pain of the outsider and how their very forward-thinking behavior contrasts with the rest of the stuffy ton. Plus the secondary characters!!! There are enough wily servants, clever Scots, Irish, effeminate "stylists/decorators" and plotting family members to stock a small Shakespeare company. Each one is carefully personalized--individual enough so that we enjoy their character, smile at their interference in the leads' lives and wait for their next "bit o' business". Of course, there are subplots, spy deals, smuggling and all that kind of window dressing but appropriate for the time and the business of international shipping--which our female lead handles with ease and independance. If you need to rush--this book is not for you. But for a lovely vacation or all that time waiting in the orthodontist's office--this gem is perfect.

The Clinton Tapes: Conversations with a President, 1993 - 2001, by Taylor Branch

Taylor Branch’s groundbreaking book about the modern presidency, The Clinton Tapes, invites readers into private dialogue with a gifted, tormented, resilient president. Here is what President Clinton thought and felt but could not say in public.

This book rests upon a secret project, initiated by Clinton, to preserve for future historians an unfiltered record of presidential experience. During his eight years in office, between 1993 and 2001, Clinton answered questions and told stories in the White House, usually late at night. His friend Pulitzer Prize-winning author Taylor Branch recorded seventy-nine of these dialogues to compile a trove of raw information about a presidency as it happened. Clinton drew upon the diary transcripts for his memoir in 2004.

Branch recorded his own detailed recollections immediately after each session, covering not only the subjects discussed but also the look and feel of each evening with the president. The text engages Clinton from many angles. Readers hear candid stories, feel buffeting pressures, and weigh vivid descriptions of the White House settings.

Branch's firsthand narrative is confessional, unsparing, and personal. The author admits straying at times from his primary role -- to collect raw material for future historians -- because his discussions with Clinton were unpredictable and intense. What should an objective prompter say when the President of the United States seeks advice, argues facts, or lodges complaints against the press? The dynamic relationship that emerges from these interviews is both affectionate and charged, with flashes of anger and humor. President Clinton drives the history, but this story is also about friends.

The Clinton Tapes highlights major events of Clinton's two terms, including wars in Bosnia and Kosovo, the failure of health care reform, peace initiatives on three continents, the anti-deficit crusade, and titanic political struggles from Whitewater to American history's second presidential impeachment trial. Along the way, Clinton delivers colorful portraits of countless political figures and world leaders from Nelson Mandela to Pope John Paul II.

These unprecedented White House dialogues will become a staple of presidential scholarship. Branch's masterly account opens a new window on a controversial era and Bill Clinton's eventual place among our chief executives.

From Publishers Weekly
Bill Clinton finds a genial Boswell for this absorbing inside account of his White House years. Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Branch (Parting the Waters) met regularly with Clinton as interlocutor for a taped diary of reflections, distilling from the rambling conversations illuminating commentaries on major issues, including the failed health-care reform, budget battles with congressional Republicans, scandals and impeachment, and foreign policy crises. They depict Clinton as both a principled man and a born operator—Branch wonderfully captures the shrewd political calculations Clinton elaborates to justify his triangulations—with a restless intellect that revels in the details of everything from Israeli-Palestinian peace talks to the Hubble Space Telescope. (The book also offers a warm portrait of the first family, with young Chelsea forever rushing in for help with homework.) Branch, who worked on presidential speeches and was paid $50,000 by Clinton for the project, often seems less than objective; he treads lightly around Whitewater and the Monica Lewinsky scandal, for example. Still, browsers and scholars will find perceptive insights on Clinton's policies and magnetic personality. (Sept.)

Review
“I have seldom read a more compelling account of a leader in power. . . . An unexpected treasure-trove. Here is Clinton out of hours and off his guard. . . . The story behind this book reads like the plot of a Hollywood movie.”

--Robert Harris, The Sunday Times (London)

“A remarkable portrait of White House life. . . . An important work about American political life. . . . Branch is an historian by trade, and an excellent one. . . . To the extent that Branch’s portrait of the president rescues politics from ignominy, he has done a real public service; that he has done this while vividly portraying an exuberant American original is cause for joy. . . . Revealing and often delightful.”

--Joe Klein, The New York Times Book Review

“By turns intimate and dispassionately historical . . . this book will be a boon to historians. The casual reader might delight more in Branch’s glimpses of an unguarded president.”
--Gilbert Cruz, Time

“Taylor Branch’s latest book has made me whistle more than any comparable piece of work for a very long time, and not just because of its many remarkable disclosures.”

--Christopher Hitchens, Newsweek

fascinating insight into the modern presidency
By Gary Delsohn
I loved this book and have to say it is absolutely unique. There has never been anything quite like it. The arrangement between Clinton and the author is fascinating and will make readers somewhat uncomfortable at times. But if you want to understand Bill Clinton, the modern presidency, how the news media cover the White House or the current state of affairs in our nation, this is a great place to start. Branch is a great storyteller, one of our most accomplished journalists and no matter what you think about William Jefferson Clinton, he has produced a masterpiece. My wife and I had the privilege of listening to Branch speak recently, at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda of all places, and it was a rare and wonderful experience. Buy the book. You won't be disappointed.

A terrific eight-year conversation
By Jon Hunt
President Clinton had not been in office long before he summoned Taylor Branch, an original "FOB" (friend of Bill) and noted Martin Luther King scholar, to begin a series of taped conversations as Clinton's own presidency progressed. The result of these hours of dialogue forms the basis and narrative of Branch's book, "The Clinton Tapes", resurrecting the author's recollections of these discussions. It was an immense undertaking and is full of historical reward.

We learn so much about Bill Clinton, the man and the president, that would otherwise not be known, until or unless the tapes, (which President Clinton has) are released for public consumption. What is perhaps not so surprising is that many major current events change so quickly. Reflecting on the early years of the Clinton presidency, who remembers now so much focus on Haiti and President Jean-Bertrand Aristide? Even the war in Kosovo and other former Yugoslav republics are now in the background of many of our thoughts. Of course, the Middle East, the Korean peninsula, India and Pakistan are still "current", but many of the players have changed. Yasir Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan's King Hussein are all gone now, but Clinton's examination of them makes it seem like just yesterday. We get to see a president who is utterly engaged in peace processes around the world with a deep understanding of the conflicts that arose during that time.

We also witness a personal side of Bill Clinton that is remarkable. He is often so dead tired that Taylor Branch finds him nodding off during their meetings. The president loves basketball and his own golf game, but isn't particularly knowledgeable about baseball. More than occasionally he seems to suffer from some physical injury or allergies depending on the day and season. Clinton dislikes the media intensely (as do most presidents) and through Branch's remembrances Clinton remains very close to Hillary and Chelsea. But there's humor, too...Clinton's own comparison of being president and running a cemetery is very funny, and Arafat's self-deprecating joke is hysterical! A more poignant and steamed up Bill Clinton, however, has a candid conversation toward the final chapters with outgoing vice president Al Gore regarding the reasons for Gore's loss of the White House. Those few pages are among the best in the book.

A significant question that any reader might have is this: "as a friend of the president, was Taylor Branch too close for impartial recall?" I suspect the answer is yes AND no, as Branch ponders that proximity throughout the book. If there is one downside to "The Clinton Tapes" it is on that very point...the author injects himself a little too much sometimes into the narrative. That said, this historic book covers the Clinton presidency at every level and most likely will be the best look at the White House from 1993-2001 from an outsider's point of view. I highly recommend it.

Why Clinton Made the Decisions He Did
By James R. Holland
Taylor Branch and Bill Clinton were comrades-in-arms in the Texas Campaign of George McGovern for President. Twenty years later after he took office, Clinton invited his old friend in to offer him an important job. He wanted Branch to be his White House historian, his "Arthur Schlesinger." That plan didn't work out, but the two old friends did decide to make some "living history," no holds-barred contemporary tape recordings of the events of Bill Clinton's Presidency as they occurred.
Taylor made two duplicate tape recordings of each of 79 two-hour interviews conducted over a period between 1993 and 2001. In order to insure that the President felt like he could talk candidly about even the most delicate subjects, it was agreed that Clinton would keep both tape recordings of each interview in his personal possession. Clinton put both of the only copies into "what he called `a good hiding place'--his sock drawer" in the dressing room next to his and Hillary's White House bedroom.
This book is not a transcription of those secret tapes. It is the author's recollections and notes of each of those two-hour "shooting the bull" confabs. After turning over the recordings to Clinton for safe storage in his super-secret hiding place, Taylor Branch would drive himself home. During the hour it usually took him to reach his driveway when driving home late at night and early in the morning, he would make another tape recording of his impressions and recollections of what was said during the earlier White House interviews. These "driving home tape recordings," his notes and memory are the basis of this 700 plus-page book. Clinton or his library will probably eventually release the President's tapes, but as of this date, they are still secret although the President told his old friend that he used much of the material in them for his own memoir and was delighted to have it.
The book includes a very detailed 38-page index that makes this material much more accessible to the reader. Unlike other recent memoirs by major political players this book doesn't ignore negative events in the life of the book's main character. Monica Lewinsky, Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones et al are listed in the index dozens of times with lots of cross-references. It's easy to locate the material that most interests the reader or researcher. That makes this book a particularly good reference book. Ever since this reviewer took a speed-reading class in high school, rapid consumption of the printed word has been the norm. However, this book isn't all unfamiliar territory. Because this reader and most of the first readers of this volume will have lived through much of this very recent history and already have a decent knowledge of the events in it, it's difficult to speed read this book. The reader constantly comes across details of the story that cause the reader to have to slow down, pause and carefully consider how these new insights on the events differ from the reader's own knowledge and understanding of the events as gathered from the news media. It's a real pleasure to actually hear a first-hand account of the details of President Clinton discussing how he came to a particular decision and why it had to be that way. Whatever the interested reader's own political party, beliefs and personal opinions of William Jefferson Clinton they can't help but be impressed with this book. It's amazing how a person's opinions can change when they learn all the options and politics that led to a certain decision. That goes for decisions about last minute pardons, signing off on the Special Prosecutor's deal that would enable him to avoid confessing any guilt and only surrender his license to practice law in Arkansas for five years and bring the endless ordeal of investigations to a final conclusion. It also allowed the Clintons to start paying off the millions of dollars in legal bills that those never-ending investigations had run up.
This book is packed with fresh material about the not-so secret events of Clinton's two terms as President of the United States. It's filled with the way Clinton liked to talk and express things in his natural southern folksy way.
This reviewer particularly enjoyed the end of the book where Al Gore also sat in for a recorded discussion with his boss and Branch. There is lot of fascinating information that resulted from that candid discussion and remarkably; this reviewer's opinion of both politicians was much improved because of it.
It was also enlightening to learn that while Clinton had thought he'd miss being in the Oval Office, he was surprised and relieved to be out of the pressure cooker of the Presidency. He'd thought he would play a lot of golf after he left the White House only to discover that while he enjoyed the escape from the constant pressure and stress while serving as President, he didn't care that much for golf once he was out of office. He preferred other mentally stimulating activities such as reading more. This book, the author's taped recollections and of course the secret tapes that Clinton still retains, are already very important and interesting history. This is a terrific read or if the reader prefers, an extremely helpful reference book to dip into whenever additional information is needed about any Clinton action, policy or his feelings about it. Naturally there are some touching family incidents described in the volume as well.

This is an excellent opportunity for Tully, his tracker pal Dave, and his retired sheriff father, Pap, to enjoy a few evenings of hot tubs and single-malt scotch at the luxurious lodge while working the case. However, visions of R & R vanish in a flash on the drive up, when Tully and Pap suddenly realize an avalanche is thundering down the mountain, straight toward them.

Tully manages to outrun the crush of snow, but the road behind is blocked, and there's no telling for how long. Tully's stranded at the lodge with a motley group of vacationers and locals: a sassy co-ed, a group of rambunctious fraternity boys, a shadowy group of what looks like ex-cons, the missing owner's wife, a suspiciously good-looking bartender, and worst (or perhaps best) of all, Tully's old flame, who shows up with her dogsled and naughty intentions.

Both vacationers and locals start to look like suspects when Tully discovers startling evidence proving that the avalanche was no accident of nature. But why would anybody want him dead? And then the missing persons case turns into a murder case when Mike Wilson's body turns up in the river a couple of days later. But who killed him, and how? Furthermore, when another murder in Blight City is reported that week, the only suspect who makes sense...is the dead guy, Mike Wilson. But how could that have happened? It's up to Tully to figure it all out in this comic romp through the wilds of Blight County, from bestselling author Patrick McManus.

From Publishers Weekly
An engaging romp that recalls the best work of Bill DeAndrea, the second Bo Tully whodunit (after 2006's The Blight Way) from humor columnist McManus sends the Blight County, Idaho, sheriff into the mountains after local woman Blanche Wilson reports her husband, Mike, missing from the upscale wilderness lodge the couple run. Tully heads into the field to investigate with his father (and predecessor as local lawman), a trip almost cut fatally short by an avalanche. Suspicious of the timing of that apparently natural event, Tully soon finds the corpse of Mike Wilson's business partner and a whopping motive for Blanche to have done away with them both: a multimillion-dollar insurance policy. Crime solving takes a back seat to the banter between Tully and his father ("Pap"), as well as the numerous attractive women they encounter along the way, but the solution is a logical if unsurprising one. From Booklist
Blight County, Idaho, sheriff Bo Tully, his dad, and friend Dave Perkins head to West Branch Lodge to check out a missing-person report. Mike Wilson, a co-owner of the business, stormed out of the lodge after a fight with his wife, Blanche. Tully and his dad, Pap, the lovable but corrupt former Blight County sheriff, narrowly miss being killed by an avalanche on their way to the lodge. When Mike turns up dead, Tully has a murder investigation on his hands, but he is stuck at the lodge until the road is cleared. In town, Mike's business partner is also found dead. The partners had purchased key-man insurance, and Blanche is the beneficiary--leaving her the chief suspect. But how did she get to town with the road blocked? Quirky characters and plenty of wit enliven this folksy mystery from the author of several collections of outdoor humor. Sue O'Brien

Outdoor humor at it's best
By Berto
We became a McManus fan back when we discovered his columns in Outdoor Life and in Field & Stream. Being avid backpackers and canoeist, we started taking his stories to read in the evening around the campfire on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and the Appalachtian Trail.

Avalanche is another wonderfully humorous tale in his new, Sheriff Bo Tully series. By now, we look forward to meeting again his great cast of characters Tully, Pap and Tracker Dave. Patrick's 15 or so books are rich in good outdoor in humor. I recommend this new book highly.

What McManus did for (to?) the outdoors, he does now for law and order
By pg
For those of us who read McManus's non-fiction and miss Retch, Crazy Eddie, The Troll, Rancid and Strange, we can now console ourselves with Sheriff Bo Tully, Dave the fake Indian (faking it to build a casino), Pap, Lurch and Clarence in his new mystery series. AVALANCHE, the second book in the series, has the trademark McManus deadpan humor, outdoor misadventure (tent camping in Idaho in November), singular characters, deceptively excellent writing and a darn good whodunnit, too. So get on down to Grogan's War Surplus for a few supplies and trek up to Blight County for a grand time.

Different But Good
By Blackjack
The Bo Tully Mysteries are good relaxation reading. They can help you unwind after a hard day. (If you are a fan of McManus that is.) These are different from his previous works. They have subtle undertones that are noticed more after the book is read a few times. This is not quite the McManus I grew up reading, but I can hardly wait for the next book to see where the story goes.

From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller London (The Book of Scandal) puts her historical romances aside to pen a contemporary heartbreaker inspired by post-9/11 patriotism. Macy and Finn Lockhart work hard and love deeply on their horse ranch in Texas until Finn joins the army and is killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan. Three years later, Macy has glued herself together enough to put the ranch up for sale and marry land broker Wyatt Clark. Then comes the paralyzing news that Finn is alive and coming home. Macy suddenly has two husbands and must decide where her future lies. Difficult choices lead to bad behavior all around, and while London knows how to keep pages turning, the lack of sympathetic characters may leave readers struggling more with their personal feelings about war and grief than with the tension of the story. No Sympathy
By DlynB
I could not finish this book. I hated it, hated Macy and wanted desperately to reach into the book and slap her. As a Navy wife and woman who has had to sit home worried when my husband went to Iraq I could not sympathize with Macy's plight, and London did little to help me. Throughout the first half of the book Macy goes back and forth between Finn and Wyatt, telling Finn she loves him, always has, always will, but then 2 pages later she says the same thing to Wyatt. In another situation I would probably feel sympathy for Macy, here though, in light of all Finn has been through, how she handles her confusion is cruel. Aside from battling the stress and anxiety that comes with being a POW for 3 years Finn has to face the loss everything he held dear, because of the woman he loved. Throughout the book she shows a complete lack of compassion for what others are going through, it's all about her and what she is going through.
She reminds me very much of the women that leave their husband while they are in Iraq, they clean out the house, the bank account and then act annoyed and victimized when the husband comes home and wants to know what happened.
Thank God I borrowed this book from the library.

A Beautiful Ride of Emotions
By Cinnamon Brown
There's nothing like a good story about love lost and then love found to get the heart going. SUMMER OF TWO WISHES by Julia London was heart wrenching, yes, heart-wrenching from the very first page. A beautiful story about love and life, London created a masterpiece in this beautiful story. If you are a romance fan of any kind, I highly suggest SUMMER OF TWO WISHES. This is the kind of book that keeps you up at night wondering about the characters until you finally get a chance to go back to the book and dive back into the world.

We've seen the story before. A woman is married to her true love, he goes away to war and she gets word that he has died there. Practically dead from grief, she finally manages to find solace in the arms of another man and eventually marries him. Suddenly her first love is back, miraculously returned from the grave. What's a girl to do when she's faced with two men, both of whom she loves just as desperately as she needs the air?

Macy has just started to pull her life together. She's barely crawling out of the dark hole that she's been hiding under and finding joy in her new husband Wyatt when Finn returns. Now, overjoyed at his return she's faced with the difficult decision of breaking someone's heart. Whether it's Finn or Wyatt, one thing is for sure; her heart is going to be a casualty as well.

If you couldn't already tell, I loved SUMMER OF TWO WISHES. Admittedly, I was a little reserved about reading the book seeing as how the general premise of the story has been used fairly often. Jennifer Haymore's A Hint of Wicked, the movies Pearl Harbor, Three For the Show, and Too Many Husbands all follow the same idea although each puts a great spin on it. I'm pleased to say that my concerns were wasted as London did an excellent job putting her own twists and turns on the idea, creating an intriguing and suspenseful plot.

Usually I'm able to sit here and type fairly quickly, telling you what I loved or didn't love about a book. In this case, I'm having a hard time figuring out exactly what it was that made the book so great because I got so distracted by the story that I never took the time to stop and think, "Oh yeah, this is good." Maybe that's part of what I love. I think that if I really had to pick one thing, it would be the way that London fills the pages with tension. Even something as simple as preparing for a luncheon becomes filled with tension and pulls the reader along. Tension is a wonderful ally to an author if used correctly. It makes the book addicting; it makes you want to read more and keeps you turning the pages. London certainly mastered that. I actually had to convince myself pretty hard that it was not a good idea to take my book to the dinner table with me; I was just that into it.

Another great aspect of SUMMER OF TWO WISHES, just as in many great books, is the characters. London has created characters with a good deal of depth that add layers to the book and give us something to ponder. More than that, however, she has created characters where the reader has to stop and consider who he or she wants the hero to be. That surprised me. I expected a clear-cut idea of who I wanted Macy to end up with, but a quarter of the way through the book I no longer could decide. Both Finn and Wyatt had their good points, but more importantly, each had their flaws. Giving these two guys their own set of flaws really helped to make the story so much more realistic. No longer were we reading a piece of fiction dreamed up in someone's head. Now we were simply reading a retelling of a story that really happened, waiting for the characters to walk through the front door and begin acting it out.

Fair warning time: SUMMER OF TWO WISHES does have adult themes and adult scenes. I would give it a sensuality rating of four out of five.

SUMMER OF TWO WISHES definitely deserves top marks. The characters were great, the pacing was really nice, and it completely captivated me. It's not every day that we get a good Romance with its own fair share of suspense and London gave us just that. I would highly recommend this book to any Romance lover and might even suggest that lovers of any sort of Drama book pick this one up as well. The main plot and subplots are intricate and enough to keep you wanting to go back for more long after you've turned the last page.

Kind of annoying
By Amber
I found myself disliking Macy from the start. She seemed so wishy washy throughout the entire book and I found myself liking Wyatt much more than Macy. I found myself just more annoyed with Macy the more I read. I know it was a hard situation for someone to be in but she seemed so... helpless and weak overall. I sure hope Wyatt ends up with the baby in any further books, she would make an awful mother.

It was an interesting storyline, but I really leave this book feeling dissatisfied and a bit annoyed. I hope that Wyatt gets a story.. I'd love to see Macy's reaction when he finds someone he loves more than her and she has to deal with that.

I had to fight to finish this book, I put it down three or four times because I was just so annoyed by Macy.

The Gospel of Inclusion: Reaching Beyond Religious Fundamentalism to the True Love of God and Self, by Carlton Pearson

Fourth-generation fundamentalist Carlton Pearson, a Christian megastar and host, takes a courageous and controversial stand on religion that proposes a hell-less Christianity and a gospel of inclusion that calls for an end to local and worldwide conflicts and divisions along religious lines.

The Gospel of Inclusion explores the exclusionary doctrines in mainstream religion and concludes that according to the evidence of the Bible and irrefutable logic, they cannot be true. Bishop Pearson argues that the controlling dogmas of religion are the source of much of the world's ills and that we should turn our backs on proselytizing and holy wars and focus on the real good news: that we are all bound for glory, everybody is saved, and if we believe God loves all mankind, then we have no choice but to have the same attitude ourselves.

The Gospel of Inclusion also tells the story of a powerful religious figure who watched everything he had crumble due to a scandal. Why? He didn't steal money nor did he have inappropriate sexual relationships. Following a revelation from God, he began to preach that a loving God would not condemn most of the human race to hell because they are not Christian. Hepreaches that God belongs to no religion. The Gospel of Inclusion is the journey of one man's quest to preach a new truth.

Great Spiritual Classic & Truly Good News
By O. Merce Brown
*****
This book is about a way to be a Christian that is loving and caring, living in the spirit of Jesus rather than by church doctrine and man-made rules based upon hatred and fear. The author uses many quotes from the Bible as well as quotes by theologians and other thinkers to make his case in diagnosing the problems with Christianity today and in arguing that there is a better way, a way that was practiced by the first-century church and beyond for almost 500 years. If you are someone who loves God and who desperately wants to follow Jesus, yet can't bear to call yourself a Christian because you are uninterested in the orthodox evangelical or fundamentalist churches...this is the book for you.

The author presents God as love at great personal cost. He has been attacked and vilified by evangelical and fundamentalist leaders, and has lost his lucrative ministry, and in some ways his life's work. However, the same could have been said about Paul (author of some of the New Testament), who also did an about-face and preached the real message of Christ. In my opinion, it is the author's life's work that led him just to this point, and that gives his message the sincerity and the purity it has.

I have to admit that before I read this book I was considering leaving Christianity for good. I still loved Jesus, but didn't know how to live as a Christian in today's dogma-based, money-based, and fear-based churches. "The Gospel of Inclusion" is genuinely good news, and has given me a way to follow Christ without being a part of what I frankly am repulsed by in the institutionalized and religion-based so-called "Christian" churches. Rev. Pearson has found a spiritual home and a message and a way to follow Jesus that is good news for all people, and I know that I will too.

I consider this book a spiritual classic that will inspire many, and perhaps comfort you if you need a soft place to fall.

Highly recommended.

Very Inspirational
By Change
The book not only brings you into the realm of the spiritual world, it provides you with a better understanding of the effects of religions in today's world. This book digs deep into the roots of religion and how it can be detrimental to society. With sveral different religions around the world and thousands of different denominations within those religions, it's easy to see why there's so much separation in the world today. Over the last 4,000 years, 5,000 different conflicts or wars have taken place because of religious differences. Where religions were supposed to unite us as a people, it has served to separates us.

The key point to this book is to unite people from all different types of backgrounds and let everyone know that they are already saved. It's to let us know that we are ALL included in salvation process. In addition, that this manufactured Devil with a pitch fork in one hand, horns on his head, and a tail is just that...manufactured! Fear-mongering tactics that have been used since the beginning of time.

The one question I asked myself after reading this book was "Would God allow for HIS children to be tortured for an eternity? Would a God who loves us so much, allow for children to suffer not just from an ordinary or quick death but to be burned in a pit of fire and remain in pain for an eternity?" That answer is NO! How could our loving and merciful God honestly enjoy himself in heaven knowing that the majority of HIS children are being tortured? This is why I don't believe in the Hell that has been manufactured by religious leaders of the past.

God loves you Always and Forever

Imagine a God of love and nothing less
By Uber Duck
Imagine having an epiphany. Suddenly, the ministry you'd preached for so long, being one of the most popular and charismatic ministers in the church and of the flock entrusted to your care, had changed. No longer was your mission to teach the gospel of exclusion. Where God's love is conditional and some of his children are doomed. Instead, you now know God is love. For everyone, everywhere. They're saved by that grace of truth even if they don't know Jesus. God is simply love.

This minister did have that revelation. And when he sought to teach his flock that truth he was shunned. And his ministry, his church, were ripped from him. A ministry he'd helped to build and to prosper in the light of Christ was no longer his to care for.

Why? Because he was branded a heretic for daring to say God does not hate! By those that insist on believing God does hate. And isn't it interesting and pathetic that that happens to be in concert with everyone they hate too!?

This book will change lives! This book promises that if all ministers of the word could see God and teach of him and Jesus in this way the world would find peace and we would truly know , in our hearts, what it means when Jesus said; love your neighbor as yourself.

This is the first commandment above all and this title and this man is on his way to relating that message for all it's worth. It provides an opportunity, page after page, to realize God loves us. Each and everyone. And for those that have had their hearts broken by the viciousness of exclusivist Christianity this book will help them to love God back. What a blessing this title is for everyone that happens to find it.

My Year in Iraq: The Struggle to Build a Future of Hope, by L. Paul Bremer III

As the American diplomat chosen by President Bush to direct the reconstruction of post-Saddam Iraq, L. Paul Bremer arrived in Baghdad in May of 2003. For fourteen danger-filled months, he worked tirelessly to realize the vision he and President Bush share of a free and democratic New Iraq.

MY YEAR IN IRAQ: The Struggle to Build a Future of Hope is a candid and vital account of this world-shaping task and the daunting challenges lying in wait. With his unique insider perspective, Bremer takes us from the ancient lanes in the holy city of Najaf to the fires of a looted and lawless Baghdad; from the White House Situation Room to the Pentagon E-Ring; from making the case for more U.S. troops to helping Iraq's new leaders write a liberal constitution to unify a traumatized and divided Iraqi people.

Chapter 1: Chaos

Monday, May 12, 2003

Baghdad was burning.

As the Air Force C-130 banked above the curve of the Tigris River, I twisted in the sling seat and stared out the circular window of the cargo bay. The capital of Iraq stretched north beneath the right wing, dusty beige, sprawled in the shimmering heat. Dark smoke columns rose in the afternoon sun. I counted three, five...seven.

Beside me, my colleague, retired ambassador Hume Horan, was saying something. But his voice was swallowed by the engine roar. I took out the foam earplugs the crew had distributed when we'd boarded the plane that morning in Kuwait.

"...government buildings," Hume shouted over the howl of the turboprops. "...Baath Party offices." He pointed toward the smoke rising above the arc of the river. "Most of the ministries were concentrated in that district. Saddam liked to keep a close eye on his people."

Ahead in the open compartment, Air Force General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his entourage also peered down at Baghdad. Over the weekend, my small staff and I had flown nonstop with Dick Myers aboard a huge C-17 jet transport from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to Doha, Qatar, on the Persian Gulf. From there, we'd taken this C-130, first to overnight in Kuwait, and then this morning to Basra in southern Iraq. We'd been traveling almost forty-eight hours.

The smoke below in Baghdad held all our attention.

Clay McManaway, another retired ambassador, my old friend -- and now my deputy -- was seated nearby. "Industrial-strength looting," he yelled. "After they strip a place, they torch it. Lots of old scores to settle."

Hume nodded in agreement as I replaced my earplugs. He was one of the State Department's leading Arabists, had spent much of his career in the Middle East, and knew Baghdad well. I did not.

Among my own assignments during almost three decades as an American diplomat, I'd been Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's chief of staff and ambassador-at-large for counterterrorism under President Ronald Reagan, jobs that had taken me to almost every capital in the region. Every one but Baghdad. While Francie, my wife of thirty-seven years, and I had served at the American Embassy in Afghanistan long ago, this was my first trip to Iraq, the country where I was about to face the biggest challenge of my life.

Less than a month before, I'd been just another former ambassador living happily outside Washington, working in the private sector. I ran the crisis management division of a large American company, Marsh & McLennan. Francie and I didn't miss the political pressure and crushing workload of high-level diplomacy. We'd recently bought an old farmhouse in New England where we hoped to vacation with our children and grandkids.

But on this hot afternoon above Baghdad, I was eight thousand miles away from suburban Washington and the mountains of Vermont. I was also back in the government, the recently appointed administrator of the newly formed Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA). Some press reports characterized me as "the American viceroy" in occupied Iraq.

As the senior American in Baghdad, I would be President George W. Bush's personal envoy. My chain of command ran through Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and straight to the president. I would be the only paramount authority figure -- other than dictator Saddam Hussein -- that most Iraqis had ever known.

Being a civilian, I would have no command authority over the 170,000 Coalition troops spread thin across Iraq, a country the size of California with a population of more than 25 million. But the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) -- the Coalition's military arm, headquartered in Tampa, Florida -- had orders from the president and Rumsfeld to coordinate their operations with the CPA and me.

The Coalition forces that had toppled Saddam after three weeks of intense combat were mainly American soldiers and Marines, but included more than 20,000 British and a much smaller number of Australians, as well as troops from NATO countries, including our new Central European allies.

The terrain they occupied was as varied as Iraq's human landscape. Coalition troops held positions in the marshy Shatt al-Arab delta of the Tigris and Euphrates, in the river towns and holy cities of the south where the Shiites, 60 percent of Iraq's population, were concentrated. Five hundred miles to the north, there were Coalition outposts on the pine-covered ridges in the homeland of the Kurds, non-Arabs who comprised about 20 percent of the population. And our units were also dotted across the flat, baking desert of central and western Iraq, the heartland of the minority Sunni Arabs who made up the 19 percent of Iraqis and had dominated Iraqi society for centuries.

The plane's whining engines dropped in pitch, and the bank angle increased to the left. A young crewman in a desert-tan flight suit strode through the swaying cargo compartment, flexing the fingers of his right hand.

"Five minutes," he called, "five." He then made a sharp cinching gesture at his waist to remind us to tighten our red nylon seat belts.

This model of the workhorse C-130 transport was called a Combat Talon and normally carried Special Operations Forces on low-altitude parachute drops or steep assault landings deep in enemy territory. We'd flown up from the southern Iraqi city of Basra at an altitude of only 200 feet, flashing above the mud-walled villages and date groves among the ancient skein of irrigation canals that had made Mesopotamia the Fertile Crescent for millennia.

The purpose of flying fast, "down on the deck," had not been to provide sightseeing for VIPs but to minimize the risk from ground fire. During the invasion a month earlier, automatic weapons and small arms had mauled U.S. Army attack helicopters passing over these sleepy farming compounds. Although President Bush had declared the end of "major combat operations" eleven days before, Deputy CENTCOM Commander General John Abizaid had conceded that the country was not yet fully pacified when he'd briefed us at CENTCOM's forward headquarters in Qatar.

In less than five minutes we'd land at Baghdad International Airport. Pulling my seat belt tight, I stifled a yawn and thought back over the events that had brought me here.

It was mid-April and Francie and I were leaving the Hartford, Connecticut, airport in a rental Ford Taurus, en route to Vermont to choose furniture for our farmhouse. Francie had bought one of those sticky buns at the airport and the smell of cinnamon filled the car as we pulled onto Interstate 91.

She seemed happy and turned to me. "Honey, I always feel I'm in good hands with you."

I glanced at her smiling blue eyes and hated to spoil that contentment. Not only does Francie have fibromyalgia, which often keeps her bedridden, but she had recently popped two discs in her back, which sent hot twinges down her sciatic nerve along the right leg. Still, she was temporarily free of pain and excited about furnishing our vacation home.

But I had to tell her what was weighing on my mind, and I had to tell her now. Washington couldn't wait any longer.

"We need to talk," I said gently. "About a job I may be offered."

"What job?" she asked quickly, the bun halfway to her mouth. Francie and I are so close that we sense each other's moods instantly, and the atmosphere in the car cooled at once. "What job?" she insisted. "Last time I checked you had a job."

She was right, of course. Running Marsh & McLennan's crisis management division for eighteen months had been engrossing work. But Francie knew I was eager to draw on my experience to help our country some way, any way, in the global war on terrorism. I had been fighting this battle for almost twenty years, most recently as chairman of the bipartisan National Commission on Terrorism. In our report to President Bill Clinton in June 2000, the blue-ribbon commission had predicted mass-casualty terror attacks on the American homeland "on the scale of Pearl Harbor." As with most such panels, our recommendations had been largely ignored until the attacks of September 11, 2001, proved our point.

And after that disaster, even at the age of sixty-two I just couldn't stay safe on the sidelines. Members of the Bush administration had discussed several jobs with me in the past months. But whenever the topic arose, Francie had opposed the idea, vehemently.

"I need you too much," she'd say. "I depend on you too much." And I knew she had a point.

Now as we drove north from Hartford, I raised the subject again. "This time it's a job where I can really make a difference. In a way, it uses all the skills I've acquired over a long career...diplomacy, insight into other cultures, management, and stamina..."

"What job?" Now she was curious. I knew Francie; if I could hook her intellect I'd be halfway there.

"Helping to put Iraq back together." Only a few days before, we'd sat in our suburban Washington home watching the CNN coverage as deliriously happy Iraqi men and boys had beat their shoes on the decapitated head of Saddam Hussein's statue that the victorious American Marines had just toppled.

"You?" She became quiet and just looked at me while I studied the road ahead with my heart pounding. I wanted this challenge. At least I wanted the chance to try. But I wouldn't do it without her blessing.

Slowly, as we drove north through the greening hills, we worked our way around the subject. I told her that I had been contacted by Scooter Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, and by Paul Wolfowitz, deputy secretary of defense. The Pentagon's original civil administration in "post-hostility" Iraq -- the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance, ORHA -- lacked expertise in high-level diplomatic negotiations and politics. And, contrary to most media accounts, the White House had never intended ORHA's leader, retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Jay Garner, to be the president's permanent envoy in Baghdad. I had the requisite skills and experience for that position.

How I destroyed a country with PowerPoint
By N. P. Stathoulopoulos
Absolutely necessary memoir, necessary as in memorable and self-serving for the diplomat-turned-colonial-governor Paul Bremer.

Pulled from the private sector for the unique job of...governing a country we just invaded and that he knew nothing about, Bremer spent a year or so carefully writing mails, putting together presentations, and travelling around with big flak jackets as he carefully managed to wreck a country through a number of 'administrative' actions that probably made a lot of sense in his office. Included is the disbandment of the Iraqi army, which drove Al Qaeda recruiting to record highs and made the multi-gazillion dollar US investment in...an Iraqi army a future milestone to mark in PowerPoint. He tried to do the right thing, but darn it, Iraq was a tough company. Eventually, his software licenses expired and he had to pack it in and head home.

I always knew PowerPoint was dangerous, but to read of it handled with such awesome power that it managed to literally tear apart a country in around a year, I can only imagine what he is doing in whatever job he now has in the private sector.

Interesting, but not compelling
By Joe Piteo
Paul Bremer deserves our respect and admiration for his many contributions, and certainly for his work in broiling summer desert of Iraq. The book is one important piece in the fabric of the history of this period of the Middle East and of course, Iraq.

On the other hand, the book is too narrow a view of the developments in Iraq. As it soon be, the book presents an important set specific details, and these details provide insight to a critical and particularly messy process. However, the authors provide little color for what must have been a very rich tableau. They do not give additional detail about the roiling Iraqi human and political landscape, so it is difficult to set Bremer's details in a broader context.

A needed point of view, but limited.

I realized that no matter how much I wanted the past to remain intact,
what was would never be again. We all got older. We all moved on.
And maybe things were supposed to change...

Funny, intelligent, and, above all, relevant, Free Style is an inspiring novel about two thirtysomething married moms -- one who is separated and the other whose marriage is hanging on by a thread. They decide to escape their to-do lists to revisit their past at Club 90, a nightclub they frequented in the early nineties. There they meet up with old friends and lost loves and dance their troubles away to Lisa Lisa and C&C Music Factory. But when they're hit with a shocking dose of reality, they must decide whether to stay in the past or move on.

More than just a fun read, Free Style explores serious issues that women grapple with all the time -- keeping romantic relationships alive, dealing with unexpected illness, single motherhood, and the need to come to terms with the past.

From Publishers Weekly
As the charmingly low-key first novel from writer producer Nieves-Powell (Yo Soy Latina!) opens, it's been 10 years since Staten Islander Idalis married the macho but unambitious Manny, and three months since they loosely separated due to their inability to agree on plans for raising their six-year-old son. Idalis wonders whether the marriage can be saved (Manny's looking elsewhere), and whether she'll be working as a secretary at a Madison Avenue ad agency for the rest of her life because of subtle racism and the lack of a college degree. A dreamboat she meets on the Staten Island ferry may provide one answer, but a visit to her old Bronx stomping grounds with Selenis, a former homegirl who's now a disappointed housewife and mother, may allow Idalis to put the past to bed and pursue a brighter future. Nieves-Powell crafts an unhurried, nonjudgmental everywoman's tale. (Mar.)

From Booklist
Ever since her husband moved out, Idalis has been obsessed with the past. Of course, she’d never trade her cherished son, but she wonders how life would be different if she hadn’t married. Maybe she would have finished college and wouldn’t be just a secretary. Or perhaps she would have ended up with someone she hung out with at the Bronx dance club she frequented in the 1990s. It’s not long before she convinces her best friend Selenis to revisit those days with her at a reunion night at the club. The women find that they can’t recapture their youth, nor can they ignore the present. This debut novel by acclaimed Latina writer-director-producer Nieves-Powell illuminates the inner lives of Latinas making their way through a virtual obstacle course in contemporary New York City. Some potentially interesting subplots don’t fully develop, but Nieves-Powell’s playwriting experience shows in the novel’s realistic, sassy dialogue. --Aleksandra Walker

THE TREASURE OF STATEN ISLAND
By Orlando Ferrand
Linda Nieves-Powell is an adroit writer. A woman of many talents, Ms. Nieves-Powell knows the alchemy of crafting a novel that will forever be remembered. Set in New York City as scenario--with its connecting bridges like pulsating veins of life running through the fleeting moments of nostalgic "Old-School" dance tunes--Free Style is not only a tasteful and richly layered urban novel, but also the fin de siècle testimony of a cosmopolitan single mother seeking her "moment of truth". From Corporate America, epitomized in Free Style by the advertising industry, to the Botánica Store in a Hispanic neighborhood in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Linda Nieves-Powell's characters are not the usual stereotypes found in soap operas. Their nuances move beyond the confinement of ethnic identities, in order to reveal the craving humanity in all of us. "I looked up at the sky, took in the vast blueness, and tried not to feel sorry for myself. I was playing back some PBS show I had watched where this bald guy talked about how the bad moments in our lives are not really bad moments. They are just the moments necessary to help us reach our more enlightened, happier selves. No matter how much I wanted to believe that, I felt like the fat kid sitting alone on the other side of this park-- the kid who's waiting for someone to care enough to give him a chance to play." I once was told by a teacher--he was probably paraphrasing some guru--that when you are ready for a revelation, a book would "descend" into your hands. This has been the case with Free Style, eloquently penned by Linda Nieves-Powell. But what I loved most about the style of her novel, is how the "revelations" that I found in it, either because they were literal, or simply because I was reading between lines, came to me more often than not, in a bold and humorous manner that made me step out of my own self, while letting the Universe speak to me through the voices of her eternal characters. I can't wait to see this novel made into a film. The cinematographic elements that can set forth an exquisite piece of narrative, such as Free Style, into a successful movie are already there, thanks to Linda Nieves-Powell, the Treasure of Staten Island!

It's about time!
By Nancy R. Johnson
It's about time for a book about intelligent, real Latina women living their everyday lives. This book is so funny and nostalgic it will make you say, "Remember that?!" It's also honest and raw in the issues it raises, so you really connect with the characters, especially the main character, Idalis, because of this fresh honesty; you really feel like you've known her forever. As an avid reader I need to read different kinds of books in order to fill my creative and emotional well. Finally, Linda Nieves-Powell delivers something that's been missing in books: a fun, sassy, serious, and strong nostalgic story that satisfies my Latina soul.

Keep it up. You've got a big fan here!

Unleash Your Unrelenting Desire to - Kick Back!
By Jennese Torres
Playwright now-turned author Linda Nieves-Powell, from Latino Flavored productions has a new, fun and fast-paced book about the not-so-fast paced lives of two 30-something year old moms.

Two best friends are worn-out, maybe a little fed up with the stress of their busy lives, juggling seemingly uncaring husbands, time-consuming children and their unrelenting desire to simply - kick back! They remember their 'freestyle' lives when they were free-style dancing at the clubs in the mid 90's.

A fun, easy-going, nostalgic read! A great book to kick-back and forget your own hurried lifestyle!
