The SABR Baseball List & Record Book: Baseball's Most Fascinating Records and Unusual Statistics, by Society for American Baseball Researc

From the authority on baseballresearch and statistics comes a vastand fascinating compendium of uniquebaseball lists and records.

The SABR Baseball List & Record Book is an expansive collection of pitching, hitting, fielding, home run, team, and rookie records not available online or in any other book. This is a treasure trove of baseball history for statistically minded baseball fans that's also packed with intriguing marginalia. For instance, on July 25, 1967, Chicago's Ken Berry ended Game Two of a doubleheader against Cleveland with a home run in the bottom of the sixteenth inning -- Chicago's second game-winning homer of the day. The comprehensive lists include Most Career Home Runs by Two Brothers (Tommie and Hank Aaron have 768), Most Seasons with 15 or More Wins (Cy Young and Greg Maddux each have 18), and Highest On Base Percentage in a Season by a Rookie (listing every rookie above .400).

Unlike other record books that only list the record holders -- say, most RBI by a rookie, held by Ted Williams with 145 -- SABR details every rookie to reach 100 RBI. Other record books might note the last pitcher in each league to steal home; here SABR has included every pitcher to do it. The book also includes a number of idiosyncratic features, such as a rundown of every player who has hit a triple and then stolen home, or every reliever who has won two games in one day. Many of the lists include a comments column for key historical notes and entertaining trivia (Bob Horner hit four home runs in a 1986 game, but his team lost). This is a must-have for every fan's library.

Talk about cool statistics!
By Steven Peterson
For those who are figure filberts and love strange statistics, this book is for you!

This is a book produced by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). This is, as the book says (page vii), "intended to fill what we in SABR feel is a void in the reference publications that fans and media depend upon." It is not intended to replace standard sources of statistics, The ESPN Baseball Encyclopedia. It provides other lists, not appearing in standard references. For instance, the Introduction remarks that some reference sources include records for most RBIs by a rookie, this volume lists "every rookie who batted in at least 100 runs."

The book covers the time frame 1876-2006. And comparing statistics across these periods is extraordinarily difficult!

Records are listed in numerical order from 001 to 740 (thus, there are 740 records examined). 001 is Most career games played (Pete Rose is # 1 with 3562); 740 is "Families with 3 or more brothers who played in the major leagues" (the Delahanty's are # 1 with 5 brothers playing in the bigs). By the way, both records are in the The Baseball Encyclopedia, if memory serves. But what records are included in between!

Some random picks: Worst fielding average by a first baseman since 1946. One player dominates with 3 of the 4 crummiest fielding averages. Any guess? Dr. Strangeglove--Dick Stuart (1961, 1963, 1964). Here's something exotic: Pinch-hit home run and one other home run in a game: This has happened 26 times (all with 1), the most recent being Jeff Salazar (Chicago White Sox) in 2006. What about most homers in a season without winning the home run title? Sammy Sosa, of course, with 66 in 1998.

Another intriguing hitting record: Most career RBIs without a 100 RBI season. Pete Rose ranks # 1 here. Others in the top 10 include Eddie Collins, Craig Biggio, Sam Rice, and Julio Franco. And how's this? Game-ending extra-inning home runs (16th inning and later)? The most recent is Ramon Martinez in 2006; the earliest was Charley ("Old Hoss") Radbourne, in 1886.

One last tidbit. Best stolen base duo in a season? With 246 steals, Arlie Latham (129) and Charlie ("Old Roman") Comiskey (117) in 1887. From1898 to the present? Vince Coleman (110) and Willie McGee (56), for a total of 166 in 1985.

Anyhow, this book is a hoot for those who like offbeat statistics. Despite the book's claim, you will find some of these statistics elsewhere. But there are some interesting off-the-beaten-path stats.

baseball fanatic
By James Adams
a boring chore if you sit down to read from cover to cover.
like reading recipe after recipe.

it is great to check on a particular player, or a particular stat.

it's probably most fun just to open to a random page and read about a famous stat that you THOUGHT you knew about, a new stat you learn about, something new about a player you have known about for years, or a new player you see from a stat page, then try to learn more about him.

A wonderful compilation
By Bones
At last, a book that truly lives up to its title--surely it has to be the most unusual baseball record book ever written, and it is thoroughly fascinating. I can't imagine any baseball fan who openins up this treasure house to look for something . . . anything . . ., and who doesn't wind up spending a delightful bouncing around from one unique record to another. Here is a tiny, tiny fraction of the things I found that I not only hadn't known, but that I hadn't known I hadn't known:

First home run hit at Ebbets Field: Casey Stengel

Most career putouts by an outfielder: 7095, Willie Mays

Players who stole home twice in a game: Honus Wagner, Joe Jackson, and Vic Power are all on the list of 10.

Most times ejected from a major league game as a player or manager: John McGraw (131) and Leo Durocher (124) head the list, but Tony La Russa, Lou Piniella, Joe Torre, and Casey Stengel are all on the list.

Most consecutive losses in a season for a team that finished first: 11, Giants in 1951.

And a million more. How can anyone be a baseball fan and not want to know these things?

From Publishers Weekly
Three generations of the Paint family struggle through 70 years of hardship and heartache on the Western plains in Todd's ambitious fiction debut. En route from Mississippi to the Dakota Territory at the height of the Civil War, Ebenezar Paint meets and marries twice-widowed Cora, a union that produces two strapping twin boys, Eli and Ezra. Ebenezer vainly chases riches; by 15, the boys are orphans and cowboys—and involved in a risky but profitable bit of horse stealing. Ezra remains a wanderer, while Eli settles down to become a wealthy rancher. The narrative eventually follows Eli's favorite daughter of his six children: Velma, who is brutalized by two of her three husbands, but whose estrangement from Eli causes her the most pain, and takes the story into the Depression era. Vivid and colorful in its depiction of the West's transformation from the frontier to the modern age, this is a hardscrabble tale of proud folks who refuse to forgive mistakes or forget faults. Todd's previous book was Desertion, a memoir of his 1969 desertion from the U.S. Army and his resettlement in Canada. He gives this epic story, which an afterword notes is based on the lives of relatives, pulpy sweep and palpable anguish. (May)

From Booklist
This sprawling epic of the American west opens in the Civil War, with young Ebeneezer Paint running goods up and down the Mississippi River. From there, Todd tracks the Paint clan across four generations, all the way up into the beginning of the Great Depression. It takes a generation or so for the story to really gain its footing, and it is most compelling in the details of the hardscrabble life the Paints endured. As Todd based parts of the book and many of the characters on his own ancestors and their memoirs, some of the plotlines feel dutifully included rather than organic, and for all the time spent with the Paints, you never really get to know them all that well. At the same time, knowing that the folk who struck out into an untamed west and made it America lived these very lives is a thrill in itself. This is an impressive, grand work that wants to sit next to Lonesome Dove, and although it doesn’t capture the same scale, even mentioning them in the same breath should be telling enough. --Ian Chipman

Family saga with all its odd twists and colorful characters
By Carla Ford
Jack Todd was able to turn his family memoirs into a beautifully written novel that encompasses history from the California Gold Rush right through the Great Depression. He introduces some wonderful characters - beginning with Ebenezer Paint piloting a steamboat down the Mississippi River. The descriptions of life in the west are incredibly vivid. The hardships, struggles, and the joys of the Paint family make a great read. There were some odd twists, and some sad stories, but if you keep in mind that Todd was basing his book on a family memoir, you know that there are usually some unexpected twists and turns in most family histories. Knowing that there was probably embellished truth in each story made the book even more interesting for me.

Great Book!
By J. Sedoris
This was one of the best books I have read, contrary to other reviews here. The author's portrayals of the old West to modern era was intense and striking, to say the least. I hope there is another novel from him soon to come!

Good Girl Gone Bad (Hot Cops, Book 1), by Karin Tabke

IN HER SIZZLING DEBUT, KARIN TABKE SETS THE SCENE WITH HARD-HITTING COPS, A SCANDALOUS CRIME, AND UNINHIBITED PASSION THAT CAN'T BE DENIED....

Straight-laced, by-the-book police officer Philamina Zorn has always lived by the letter of the law -- that is, until she is assigned to work with Lieutenant Ty Jamerson, a tough-as-nails, arrogantly handsome cop who knows exactly how to press her buttons. Staking out Klub Kashmir, the Bay Area's hottest gentleman's club, Phil and Ty go undercover to bait the kidnapper of three young women -- including two strippers from the club -- while trying to keep their clashing personalities at bay. Baring more than just her inhibitions, Phil dons a barely there ensemble, straps on stilettos, and reveals her feisty side as Kat, a seductively sexy cocktail waitress who lets her luscious curves do the talking. Not only is she determined to expose a criminal but she has vowed to show her hot-headed lieutenant, a.k.a. floor manager of Klub Kashmir, that she's no shrinking violet.

As Phil and Ty become more deeply entrenched in the sordid underground world of exotic dancing, where money means everything and passions run wild, flaring tension becomes uncontrollable lust. It's all they can do not to surrender to desire -- a hunger that intensifies with each playful encounter. Meanwhile, a cold-blooded criminal is hiding in the shadows -- and a devastating secret that, if revealed, could shake Phil to her core.

Pretty good, but I didn't feel good enough to recommend it.
By Jane
STORY BRIEF:
Phil (female) is a policewoman assigned to work undercover with Ty and two other police officers in a strip club. Ty's undercover role is floor manager. Phil initially works as a scantily clad cocktail waitress and later becomes the club's most popular strip-tease dancer. Ty is turned on when seeing her as a waitress and even more so when she dances. Three women who previously worked in the club had been kidnapped. Ty's group's job is to find the kidnapper and the women.

REVIEWER'S OPINION - CAUTION SPOILERS:
Ty and Phil start falling for each other, but things are back and forth between them. Some of their conflicts are due to vague communication which I didn't like. As soon as Ty and Phil have sex, Ty immediately makes a date with another woman, due to his fear of commitment. That didn't feel right to me and felt like another excuse to have a conflict between them. Although Phil is inhibited with issues from her past, I didn't like the way she would tease him and then say no. She wanted sex, but would say no to herself as well. I also didn't like that Phil got mad at Ty because he wouldn't tell her about another case still in progress. In general, I didn't like or have enough sympathy for Phil. Once Phil started performing on stage as a dancer, the audience no longer wanted to see the other dancers and only wanted to see her. The audience yelled her name and didn't tip the others as well. I felt sorry for the other dancers. I think I was jealous of Phil which is not good because I want to like the heroine. I've read other books with gorgeous and model perfect heroines and was not jealous, so I don't understand why Phil bothered me, but she did somehow. The final scene of catching the bad guys was too easy for me. Certain people just happened to show up at the right place at the right time for things to work out. Other than that, the plot was good like many books, but nothing surprised or delighted me enough to rate more stars.

DATA:
Story length: 354 pages. Sexual language: strong. Number of sex scenes: 7. Length of sex scenes: 1 short scene (1 page) 4 medium scenes (2 to 5 pages) and 2 long scenes (10 and 19 pages). Total number of sex scene pages: 46. Setting: current day Bay Area (according to the back cover), I assume California. Copyright: 2006. Genre: contemporary romantic mystery with some suspense.

Hot cops and hotter tension
By E. Ramer
Every page of GOOD GIRL GONE BAD sizzles with energy and pulses with passion. Tough cop Ty Jamerson is forced to work with follow-the-rules Philamina Zorn. When Phil worked in Internal Affairs, she tried to pin a brutality charge on Ty. Now he's her lieutenant, and they're working undercover at a strip club to find the kidnapper of three young women, one an undercover cop-just like Phil. Ty's playing the club manager and she's a cocktail waitress, using the pseudonym Kat. In her stilettos and not much else, she becomes Kat-seductive, teasing, all woman. With his raw masculinity, Ty is a match for her in every way possible. But these two come with their own built-in emotional armor and aren't giving each other-or themselves-an easy time. And then there's the kidnapper who seems to know more than the average criminal. He targets Phil as his next victim. He's done it three times before with no problem. Will he do it again?

If you like romance with a strong hero and equally strong heroine, this is the book for you.

If you like hot cops with a hero who makes you sigh and a heroine who has you cheering, this is the book for you.

If you like romantic suspense with tension that thickens with every page, this is the books for you.

GGGB is the first of Karin Tabke's series of hot cop books. I'm already eager to read the next one.

Excellent sensual romance
By Laurie
Police officer Philamina "Phil" Zorn met then Sgt. Ty Jamerson three years ago when she was working in Internal Affairs, investigating a brutality charge against Ty. Now a Lieutenant, Ty is investigating a string of kidnappings, all happening at Klub Kashmir, a high-end strip club, where Ty is working undercover as floor manager. Phil, with her killer body, is set up as a cocktail waitress, complete with a sexy, skimpy "uniform." It isn't long before Phil and Ty become intimate, and they soon find it increasingly difficult to maintain cool heads, given the erotic surroundings of their undercover operation.

Phil is very inhibited due to a strict upbringing under the thumb of a preacher/police officer father, and an unpleasant sexual experience in her teens. While Phil wants to nab the kidnapper and find the missing women, she also wants to find out the facts behind her father's alleged suicide, facts that Ty alone can tell her. The problem is that Ty isn't a man of many words, preferring to let his actions do the talking, especially when he's attempting to help Phil lose some of those pesky inhibitions.

Phil and Ty literally smoke on the pages. The story behind their history is heavy and deep; there is no fluff to be found in this book. Ms. Tabke offers interesting glimpses of the sometimes desperate, often dark, world of erotic dancing, and an eye-opening look at the questionable goings-on behind the police force. I enjoyed this book not just for its eroticism, but for the powerful storytelling. It is obvious that details were well thought-out and researched. Kudos to Karin Tabke!

From Publishers Weekly
Maureen Paschal, last seen discovering the secrets of Mary Magdalene in The Expected One, returns in this overstuffed sequel. Haunted by dreams of Jesus telling her to search for the Book of Love, Maureen, now a bestselling novelist, takes off for France, where her estranged lover, Bérenger Sinclair, reveals that the mysterious manuscript is supposed to be a gospel written by Christ and whose existence is merely a rumor. Both Maureen and Bérenger receive strange clues pointing them toward the story of Countess Matilda of Tuscany, an 11th-century noblewoman and an early champion of the Book of Love. With the help of Maureen's cousin, a Jesuit scholar at the Vatican, Maureen confronts dangerous forces bent on covering up the truth and follows Matilde's trail though Belgium, Italy and France, culminating in a stunning sequence within the Chartres Cathedral. However, Matilda's hefty story line exists uneasily next to Maureen's contemporary narrative and relies too much on long-winded narration to explain Christian esoterica. Series fans and readers into Da Vinci Code–style church intrigue will enjoy the hell out of this. (Mar.)

From AudioFile
This sequel to THE EXPECTED ONE further explores the cult of Maryology, and the theory that Jesus Christ was married to and bore children with Mary Magdalene. Protagonist Maureen Pascal, one of their descendants, finds information suggesting a gospel written by Christ himself. This "Book of Love" points to the Holy Spirit being God's wife in heaven. Linda Stephens narrates in a hushed, breathy tone reminiscent of talking in church. Her portrayals of Maureen's friends, relatives, and antagonists from various countries include credible accents but little passion or conviction. One quickly tires of the author's endless repetition of clichéd phrases, as well as Stephens's delivery of them. In her self-narrated author's notes, McGowan swears it's all true. *SIGH*
By Co-Conspirator in Things Divine
Okay, I finally finished this book - but it took me 4 weeks. As an avid reader, I can easily read a riveting book within a few days. However, this book is slow and plodding. Yet I did have high expectations since I enjoyed the author's previous book, The Expected One.

The majority of the book is about Matilda of Tuscany rather than the heroine from the prior book (Maureen.) For me, TEO promised to delve into the alleged Cathar's "Book of Love" and its contents in this second book of the trilogy. Unfortunately, very little further information is revealed on that 'lost' book. Maureen supposedly finds the book which she cannot translate due to its undecipherable language. Then she magically absorbs light from it, and it glows, and she is able to understand the contents. Weird, huh? Yet we still don't learn what the BoL contained since it's never really explained.

Other than that silliness, it was difficult to keep up with all of the flashbacks. The reader has to contantly flip back-and-forth to try to keep track of characters, time-frames and events. For me, this is just too much work since I want entertainment from a good novel! It just got too exasperating and was a very fragmented read.

I honestly could not recommend this book to anyone unless they are suffering from insomnia- this book is the perfect remedy. I'm generously giving it a 2-star since I can tell that the author worked diligently on her new novel. But overall, it reads like a cheap modern romance - not a historical novel but instead a modern story set in medieval times. If you're looking for an experience of medieval immersion, get another book. However, if you're looking for a 21st century "emotion-fest" set in 12th century clothes, this book is for you.

Spirited Read, Working on Many Levels
By Hopeful Reader
You don't have to be caught up in any controversy to enjoy this book. You just have to love a compelling plot, filled with surprising historical details, tantalizing mystery and a cool, compelling message. It's a great read no matter what you believe about Christianity.

And really, it has a soul, this book. You're just rollicking along with it and by the end, you realize you've been moved - deeply. How many pieces of pop culture manage that?

Good
By Tina
I have to start off by saying that I am not usually a huge fan of this type of book as they always reminded of me of another imitation of The DaVinci Code - which is another book I could never quite figure out the fascination with.

However, I was extremely pleased to discover, upon starting the first few pages that McGowan is an excellent writer - I immediately loved her descriptions and details - especially when it came to describing all the beautiful areas of the world. She has a way of making it sound as though I am standing right there!

I think what I liked most about The Book of Love is that this book is a indeed an adventure/thriller storyline, but it also includes a vast knowledge of history (which I always enjoy). The story of Matilda of Tuscany and the Pope was fascinating to me and to think that I never even knew these people could have existed. There is, of course, a beautiful love story entertwined in this book and the adventure and pace is non-stop.

At times, I got a little confused with all the characters - especially when the action was at its heaviest, but once I had all the players figured out, I was fine.

Freedom

"Much of what we think we know about African American history isn't completely true," says Betty DeRamus in the introduction to Freedom by Any Means.

"According to the usual story, slaves gained their freedom by running away, being freed by their owners, buying their way out of bondage or having someone else buy them. But how do we account for people like John Bowley, who bluffed his and his family's way to freedom, or Althea Lynch, whose cooking sprang her from jail? And what about all those who managed to win their freedom by sidestepping tricks and traps or winning lawsuits?"

Bowley, Lynch and dozens of others are as vivid and surprising as the very real characters who made the veteran journalist's first book, Forbidden Fruit, a best-seller. Essence magazine described Forbidden Fruit as "a rich collection of true slave-era tales that are at times haunting, often riveting, but always triumphant in the end."

The same can be said of Freedom by Any Means, which takes a broader look at the various extraordinary ways that enslaved and dehumanized people achieved freedom and the means to a self-determined life. Among these people are visionaries who not only survived against the odds, but prospered -- building businesses, owning land and other property.

The historical research that grounds this beautifully written narrative is drawn from unpublished memoirs, census records, government reports, periodicals, books and much more. The story of slavery and the African American experience before the Emancipation Proclamation "isn't one story," according to DeRamus, but rather a multitude of stories. This book reveals how men and women were willing not just to risk their lives to escape the slave system, but able to use their intelligence and cunning to manipulate the court system, outwit slave traders and brave the unknown in order to assert their humanity.

From Publishers Weekly
Arnold Gragston ferried slaves across the Ohio River, freeing other people while remaining enslaved himself; Nelson Gant was tried for attempting to steal his wife from slavery; Althea Lynch, cook and escaped slave, set off a crisis that involved one military governor, two posses and a U.S. Marshal. That's just a sampling of the stories of former slaves and freedmen who were agile enough to... sneak through holes in the system and take what seemed like very little and turn it into more than enough in award-winning journalist DeRamus's salute to the daring and the inventiveness of those who made history, while not making it into history books. DeRamus's touch is light and journalistic, close in tone to Sunday supplement pieces, and a bit jazzy (It was love bubbling on a stove, love shouting at the low-slung midnight moon). Entertaining and easy reading it is, but as DeRamus reaches beyond the famously heroic figures into the lives of the little known, she enriches and alters our perspective on 19th-century African-American daily life. From Booklist
As with so many other aspects of American slavery, achieving freedom carried far more variations than is widely known or understood. Journalist DeRamus follows up Forbidden Fruit (2005) with accounts of the myriad ways that slaves ran away. Her first section reprises some of the love stories from her earlier book, telling of escapes by married couples who faced the threat of separation when one was freed and the other not. She recounts the case of Nelson Gant, a freed Virginia slave, whose offer to buy his wife was refused. Gant’s attempt to steal her resulted in a court trial that eventually upheld their marriage, the first case in Virginia to recognize a marriage involving slaves. The second part of the book features stories of deceptions escaping slaves faced, including fake safe-house operators and tricksters who sometimes ensnared freed blacks. The final section is devoted to California, the destination for many escaped slaves though it had its own dubious policies, and to Mary Ellen Pleasant, a wealthy, powerful black woman who worked for the antislavery cause. --Vanessa Bush

A MASTERPIECE BY ALL MEANS!!!
By Michele Wright
FREEDOM BY ANY MEANS is an ingeniously crafted historical book BY ALL MEANS!!! I was more than intrigued to discover the other side of the story as it relates to African American history as I ventured into the world of the fifteen luminously untold stories uniquely documented by author Betty DeRamus.

I was instantly mesmerized with this book the moment I began reading the opening story of John Bowley, a skillful ship carpenter and freed slave, who daringly and cunningly showed up at a Maryland Slave auction in the mid-1800's with nothing more than some bold guts and a clever plan in a successful attempt to secure the freedom of his wife Kessiah (the niece of Harriet Tubman - The "Moses of Her People") and their two children who were all scheduled to be sold at auction to another slave-owner.

And I remained awestruck as I continued to read one untold historical event after another. And being a native of Tuskegee, Alabama, I was also intrigued with Tuskegee Institute's founder Booker T. Washington's description of the "grapevine telegram" - the invisible communication wire for slaves and freed blacks. Additionally, I was pleased to read an excerpt from a 1901 letter of Robert W. Taylor, financial secretary of Tuskegee Institute, to a newspaper editor concerning Harriet Tubman which reads, "She told me that when she found her mother unwilling to leave behind her feather bed tick, and her father his broad axe and other tools, she bundled up feather bed, broad axe, mother, father - all and landed them in Canada".

This expertly compiled masterpiece of "untold" historical events brings a whole new but most tasteful depiction to the accounts of African American freedom and history. As opposed to viewing slaves as a people who secured freedom through fear and avoidance, you now can appreciate an enduring account of slaves as strong people with a large vision who strategically and cleverly devised an effective and commendable plan of action for freedom. This took not only gutsy creativity but brilliant implementation.

And likewise, Author Betty DeRamus displays both gutsy creativity and brilliant implementation in her compilation of these remarkably documented untold stories. These intriguing pearls of history of American slavery should become integrated into the American history teaching curriculum of every educational facility. Needless to say, as author of "Freedom By Any means", DeRamus continues her excellence in documenting tales of African American history that she commendably started in her first book, "Forbidden Fruit".

How To become Free
By Lolita M. Hernandez
This collection of historically accurate tales describes the many paths to freedom undertaken by black slaves through previously unheard of "Con Games, Voodoo Schemes, True Love and Law Suits on the Underground Railroad." They will strike you as clever, at times harrowing, and at other times flat out dangerous, but always full of heart, intelligence and love. The people in these historical renderings were guided by much more than the North Star. They were inspired by a deep and abiding faith in their humanity. No, these are not just stories of yesteryear, long ago days when slavery existed; these are not just stories to trot out righteously every February. These are stories to read for present-day guidance on how to escape the morass of war, poverty, hate, racism, and all the other isms that keep us isolated, insulated and thoroughly oblivious to our global kinship - except when our pocketbooks are empty and we are looking for someone to blame. Betty DeRamus masterfully wove these stories into one long proscription for modern times. They are a look back for a hope forward. Or should I say a hop? Or a row on the Ohio River, one of the routes of the Underground Railroad? Until this book I never knew Michigan, my home state, had such a progressive role in the Railroad. I'm not talking about Detroit. I'm talking about Cassopolis, Cass County, Michigan where one wouldn't ordinarily think of help for escapees from slavery. So these stories represent a portion of American history that every single person in this country needs to read as a path to understanding the heroism and heart of true patriots. These stories are well researched. DeRamus now has established a network of the families, white and black, whose ancestors played a role in the thumping of feet, the rustling of brush and the soft rippling of waves on the way to freedom.

Read This Book
By A. Hodari
"Freedom was supposed to taste like sweet potatoes simmered in cinnamon or pecan pies baptized with rum." However, former slave Sally Williams found the taste of actual freedom bittersweet at first. Like other people in Betty DeRamus's "Freedom by Any Means," though, Williams quickly embraced the life she and her son took extraordinary steps to create.

There are history books that spew facts. Then, there are history books that are written. With "Freedom by Any Means," journalist Betty DeRamus has written a factual book about stories from the Underground Railroad with an authentic, friendly, relevant voice.

Take for example, the beginning to Chapter Fourteen, "Let's pretend the academy of Motion Pictures was around in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, handing out shiny trophies to people on both sides of the antislavery movement..." This statement serves as an introduction to a chapter highlighting the acting and performance skills that often helped Blacks gain their freedom. There are quite a few examples like this in this book- where DeRamus uses timely, modern images to explain historical events.

Indeed, the narrator voice is engaging, guiding, instructive, yet unobtrusive. Challenging enough for scholars, but accessible enough for younger, or less seasoned audiences. Further, the author does not assume history is a bland subject for the classroom, or "historiophiles." Rather, this book includes quotes, poetry and even recipes. DeRamus uses several devices to share stories of the Underground Railroad with readers.

The stories and anecdotes contained in "Freedom by Any Means" travel ground that have not been adequately covered previously. And, happily, the work is equitable with regard to gender. In addition to males, who tend to be overrepresented in history, we learn about Tempe, a Missouri woman, who successfully sued for her freedom in court. And, we gain more insight into some of my favorites-- women like Mary Ellen Pleasant and the never too familiar Ms. Harriet Tubman. By the way, it isn't easy to teach me something new about Harriet Tubman.

I posit that when it comes to an oppressive, overarching institution such as slavery, there cannot truly be voluntary relationships between an oppressor, and the oppressed. Still, DeRamus' research offers an alternative to the standard, hostile, abusive and exploitative relationships that, more often than not, existed between Blacks and whites with stories about John L. Brown, and others. One of the best aspects of this book is that it can bear the weight of critical analysis and is worthy of inspiring intellectual and scholarly debate.

As a professor of Black Studies, what I appreciate most about this book is the profound attention to the seven principle areas of Black Studies. This text addresses history, politics, spirituality, psychology, sociology, economics, and creative production, as it relates to freedom. Indeed, the biggest problem with this text was not being able to identify a favorite section, because all the sections are significant, educational and contributory to the unfolding of Black Studies as a necessary academic discipline. The bibliography has been used intelligently, and enhances the text.

This book takes an important, urgent and needed step toward abolishing the myth of the "happy slave" and documenting our people's resistance. In a just world, a people would not have been held in inhumane bondage. But, if you want to know the many ways our people gained freedom, then, read this book!

Just Read It
By homeschoolmom
I read this after attending marriage counseling and the therapist recommended this to me. Wow did it make a difference in seeing what I've been doing and why. I went into counseling thinking everything was about how my husband treated me and I was pissed when the therapist said I am the problem. I figured I'm going to just suck that up and read the book before passing too much judgement. Now, I know my husband is 100% responsible for how he acts and treats me but this made me take a deep look at what I am doing and take responsibility for my part in our issues. It was definitely an eye opener for me. I think we made a lot of progress at the counseling session after reading this. It is not a 'fix-it' book, it's a book helping us find out why we act a certain way and why we choose to love who we love. I think the book focuses more on divorce when one person loves too much but it is also a big help when you do not want a divorce.

If You're Considering Buying This, Do It!!
By Amazon Customer
This is an amazing book, and I can't stop talking about it to all my my friends and loved ones. I would genuinely recommend it to anyone who grew up in a fairly dysfunctional family, even only mildly, or even not at all-- because it truly does help you reflect on your childhood, on your learned behaviors, and how those behaviors affect your adult relationships. It also encourages a lot of self reflection and forces you out of denial, which is key in any growing/evolving process. Definitely one of my favorites!

The Old Classic That is A Must For All Aged Women!
By labrador mom
This is a classic top quality book on women picking men for dating and relationships for the wrong reasons. And how to learn to pick well. There are many of you out there young, middle aged and 60 and beyond. This is the book. I only gave this copy 3 stars as a reading glass aged therapist I could not read the print easily. I ordered another copy for more money in bigger print.
