Rotter relies heavily on black street slang for comic effect in his zany debut, starting with chizapter 1. Wally Moscowitz, a self-described frumpy, kinda chubby little boring man living in Los Angeles, writes lyrics for rapper Oral B, the current star of Godz-Illa Records. When not penning lyrics full of four-letter words for Oral, Wally also writes dirty bedtime fables for adults, examples of which are sprinkled throughout the novel. Godz-Illa CEO Abraham Dandy Lyons has assured Wally that if anyone ever discovers that Oral B isn't writing his own lyrics, Wally will end up in a ditch. Soon, Wally's dog gets 'napped, goons are trying to kill Wally and everyone rushes to and fro against a backdrop of glitzy L.A. bizness thuggery. Rotter's a talented writer, though readers who find variations of the same joke funny enough to support the silly plot will be most rewarded.

About the Author
A native of New York, Gabe Rotter now permanently resides in Los Angeles with his wife. He graduated from the film school at The University of Southern California in 2000, and since has worked in television, produced a feature film, penned the novel Duck Duck Wally, written a comic book, and is currently Director of Development for Ten Thirteen Productions. He has several of his own projects in development for film and television adaptation.

WOW! What a FUN ride!

This book is so funny. I read it in one sitting...laughing out loud so ofter that I began to wonder who this guy is that wrote such an amazing first novel. Can't wait for the next!

Be prepared to laugh out loud and not be embarassed one bit

Once I found out what the premise for the book was I had to get it. I mean a doughy 30 something jewish guy who is secretly a ghost writer for a gangsta rapper named Oral B, come on. It is almost a Farrelly brothers movie with that alone. The book has plenty of twists and Rotter's ability to translate rap colloquialisms into written text is mind blowing.

One of Wally's freestyle rhyme's cracks me up the most. "I'm stoned and I'm spinnin' and the chronic got me feelin' like I'm Lionel f$ckin' Riche and I'm dancin' on the ceilin'." Too funny

The book is quick to get into and hard to put down.

Duck Duck Wally is totally a guy's book. It's full of rap and violence and guy imagery and masculine concepts of what's cool and funny. It has Mother-Goose-type porn in it, for crying out loud. So how did a middle aged hen like my self come to love it so much? Easy - I was tricked, pulled in by the voice of the unassuming, frumpy, wallflower that is Wally.

See, I know Wally. You know him too. Everybody knows a Wally.

He's the guy in the yearbook no one remembers, the dude at work you walk by without noticing, the cousin who still sleeps in your aunt's basement, the brother of your best friend that you can never remember the name of, the driver of the broken down heap blocking the intersection, the guy who works in the back or the basement or whatever.

He is the average Joe that nothing much ever really happens to, the representation of all the faceless people that seem only to exist to witness the rest of the world's great accomplishments, which means he's me and, statistically speaking, he's probably you too.

Even though this guy is nobody, even though he's not good looking, even though he's a human doormat, even though he smells like bacon fat and it looks like he's slept in that t-shirt for three days straight, you'll jostle the crowd to get closer to him because this guy who never has anything to say worth saying has a story to tell, a you've-got-to-be-kidding-me story, a leaves you slack jawed and shaking your head story, a too-amazing-to-be-true story, and even though it is - it is fiction after all - you're going to hang on to every word he says because it happened to "this guy," this ordinary guy, this chubby-little-white-putz-that-writes-rap guy, and because it's the best damn story you've heard in a long time.

As always, Swerling has conjured a dazzling cast of characters to people her city. Among those seeking born-again salvation are Addie Bellingham, befriended by the widow Manon Turner but willing to betray her, and Lilac Langton, who confesses her sins but avoids mentioning that she's a skilled abortionist in a city that has recently made abortion a crime. Ben Klein, a brilliant young physician, must balance devotion to his mentor and dedication to research with duty to the Jewish community. Wilbur Randolf, Carolina's father, indulges her in everything but fails her when she needs him most. Jenny Worthington, Wilbur's longtime mistress, is driven by avarice to make common cause with Fearless Flannagan, a member of a New York police force as corrupt as the city it serves. The time period in her new novel is the 1830s to the 1850s, and the narrative finds its location in the tumultuous New York City of poor immigrants in unsanitary neighborhoods, high-society matrons in luxurious mansions, and entrepreneurs in businesses growing wealthier by the day. As in previous volumes in the series, the author maintains a focus, within the maelstrom of New York life, on two related but competitive families with long ties to the city and its development. One flash point between the two families is a husband who attends to his Chinese mistress while neglecting his wife, the latter of whom, years later, goes on to marry across the family divide; the other flash point is the question of who from within the two families can capture control of Jacob Astor’s lucrative shipping business. The general issues of the day, which both families must deal with, to varying extents, include slavery and abolitionism, religious conflict, technological advancement, progress in health and medicine, and organized labor. "City of God" starts with an old, old legacy-and a new lie that ends up runnning most of the show

Once upon a time there was a lovely little Chinese girl whose father was a pirate of a sort and worked with white men smuggling opium out of China. One day one of these white men, an American named Sam Devrey, spotted the girl, and though she was only three, he knew he must have her for his wife. And so this girl, whose name was Plum Blossom, was trained to be the perfect wife to a rich man who owned his own kingdom in a place called New York-right down to the three inch golden lilies (foot mutilation) that made the gait of the Chinese woman so attractive.

Years past and Sam was happily ensconced with his Chinese wife (not in a palace but above a warehouse which she believes is a palace because she can't leave the three rooms they live in or open the curtains), he realized he has a problem. The Devrey's, like their cousins the Turner's (See City of Dreams: A Novel of Nieuw Amsterdam and Early Manhattan for the back story") are one of the oldest and most predominate families in New York-and having a half-cast Chinese heir just won't do (Not to mention he doesn't want to share his wife, Plum Blossom or Mei-hua with anyone, or risk her life or figure in childbirth.) So he marries again, this time to a tall blond white woman, Carolina who he finds physically unappealing, but knows that upon her father's death, Carolina will inherit a great deal of money. Money he desperately needs to regain control of his shipping company from John Jacob Astor (See City of Glory: A Novel of War and Desire in Old Manhattan for background details.)

Just as Caroline Devrey gives birth to her first son, Nicholas Turner comes to town to take over the medical treatment at Bellevue hospital, the most corrupt place he has could have ever managed to find. Nick's already ahead of the majority of his profession in that he believes in germs and washes his hands before touching any patient, but he needs a place to do real research- real research including dissections of humans (illegal at the time) to find where disease comes from and how to stop it. At first funds are despaired of, since even to get medicine to a patient at Bellevue requires paying the dubious chemists out of your own pocket and the city council is in no mood to change the ruling structure of the hospital. But after an encounter with Sam and Mei-hua in which he saves the young girl's life, Nick finds his distant cousin, who owns him the life of the woman he loves (and his locked lips on the secrets), can fund his research. Now there's only one problem-he's head over heals in love with his cousin's mistreated, neglected and very much unloved wife Caroline.

Aside from the main plot City of God: A Novel of Passion and Wonder in Old New York incorporates into it the introduction of ether, making surgery painless and decreasing the chances of dying from shock, as well as the first licensed Jewish doctors, some old friends and a very valuable item from "City of Glory", the development of rural Manhattan into a metropolises and the increasing number of religious differences and sects that are popping up all over the island.

It seems like of Swerling's books manage to be different somehow. Shadowbrook: A Novel of Love, War, and the Birth of America (my personal favorite) is an epic love/war story in the spirit of Gone with the Wind "City of Dreams" (second favorite) is a generational epic, which tells the tale of the original feuding between the Devrey's and Turner's (who used to be, incidentally, one family) from the time New York was New Amsterdam. And "City of Glory" was a fast paced thrilled which took place in ten days and had a lot of narrators (too many really.)

If I had to categorize this book then I would say it's kind of a classic "villain who must be crushed novel" with a lot of extra history thrown in. There is no question that Sam Devrey is an extremely unlikable character-even hateful-who destroys, lies to or ruins everything he touches (in spite of his rare good intentions.) But unless the scenes he isn't in include a lot of medical information (which Swerling has always been excellent at making fascinating and disgusting and creating enormous gratitude in this reader that I didn't live back then-in spite of having to deal with HMO's now!)they just aren't that interesting.

I did have a really fun time reading this book, and as with all of Swerling's I had immense difficultly putting it down once I started in. But as of this moment it's my third favorite of her published books-which is saying something considering I worshiped "Shadowbrook" and "City of Dreams." I sincerely hope this isn't the end of Swerling's New York books, because I would LOVE to read once that concentrated on the women's right moments in the early 1900's. Of course I'd also like to see more books like "Shadowbrook"-which though it did have some relatives of the New York families was a completely different sort of book. Actually, you know what, if Beverly Swerling writes it, I'll buy it and read it. Bad economy be dammed.

The only problem I had with this book is that there's a genealogy chart at the beginning which extends well into the more than 20 year time span of the book. This wouldn't be a problem expect it lists liaisons, and children, which would otherwise have been a surprise to the reader. Maybe it should be put in the back of the book next time-then I wouldn't have known that X and Y shack up and have kids before it appears C is dead. (Random example used to protect the characters and prevent spoilers.)

Quite wonderful! A richly human, deeply honest book.

This is a grand book, written by a grand story-teller. All the texture of the time: different communities thrown together in the city, all equally ambitious - wealthy Dutch and wealthy but circumspect Jews, despised and suspect Catholic nuns stoically caring for those nobody else will care for, homesick Chinese without sight or smell or sound of anything familiar, except in their tiny enclave... -- all rubbing against each other in an uneasy truce.
Brilliant characters and complex relationships, male-female, parent-child:
Mei-hua, the young Chinese woman with `golden lilies', feet bound in infancy and the instep broken (a detail I did not know, though I come from a country with a large Chinese population, with a display in the National Museum about this custom) who considers herself a princess and first wife, though sold by her father to Samuel Devrey. Devrey himself, such a disordered confusion of east and west - New York born and of good family, growing up in China - that he seems to genuinely love - as much as he is capable of loving - this woman whose mutilation he caused, *because* of her mutilated `golden lily' feet. Then there's the mixed-race daughter of the `golden bud', whose life has a unique trajectory leading from an early gilded seclusion with her mother through a convent and relationships good and bad to a battlefield of that same war.
Tender and complex relationships: between two doctors - Nicholas Turner, from a family of prominent doctors (and a cousin of Samuel Devrey) and the young Jew, Benjamin Klein, and their wives. And parent-child relationships, even ones drawn relatively briefly, for example that between the Ben Klein (and wife) and his father, also full of tenderness, as well as conflicts about ways of worship, are the homemade cherry preserves kosher or not, and what in the world is the young man doing with his career? And then the next generation, Ben's children, hide runaway slaves without the young doctor's consent.
And that's only scratching the surface.
I fully intended to pace myself, read a few pages and put the book down and get back to my own work. That idea succeeded a couple of times. I read 20 pages and put it down. Then I picked it up after tea one day for another 20 pages, and presently it was 11 pm and I only realized the time then because I ran out of book to read. (Fortunately my husband was doing dinner that day, and he seems to have put a plate in my hand while I was reading because I wasn't starving at the end, but I honestly don't even remember eating).
Ms. Swerling tells a fascinating story in this series, and one which is still playing out today: successive waves of emigrants arriving in the city (and this country), working their way through difficulties and hostility up the social ladder; male-female relationships evolving, and the role of women; arguments over politics and religion. Unraveling the roots of these arguments - now over stem-cell research or medical euthanasia and in the time of City of God over the use of anaesthesia during surgery (the elimination of pain being, it was thought, a violation of Divine will). Then there's mysticism, or rapture, or ethics... Which way to God, and what does that require from people?
An important book, and a good read.

Like stepping into a fantastic time machine

I've spent two unforgettable days time traveling. Arriving in New York 1834, and being taken on a thrilling ride through the most glorious city on the planet, with Beverly Swerling as my accomplished guide. She introduced me to a bunch of fantastic characters - my favorite was the magnificent Carolina, a true fighter - and got me thoroughly involved in their lives, all the way to Gettyburg, in 1863. Bits of this book reminded me of James Clavell (Noble House and Shogun)and there's also a hint of Dickens. A real page turner, but be warned... you'll keep telling yourself, 'Just one more chapter, then I'll put it down.' And if you're anything like me, you'll read it in one go, pausing only for sleep.

If you're familiar with the Hippocratic or medieval model for typing personalities (choleric, melancholy, phlegmatic, and sanguine), then Taylor Hartman's The Color Code will be a short refresher course for you.

This "original" personality paradigm divides us into (surprise!) four colors-- red, blue, white, and yellow--that define the characteristics of our fundamental natures. Reds are the annoying bossy types; blues are moody artists; whites are unmotivated layabouts; and yellows are--you guessed it--party animals. Well, maybe it's not that extreme, but according to Hartman, who reads the text himself, each person has one true color that explains the motivations behind his or her behavior. For example, if you are a red, you are probably a natural-born leader and have a high need for control. While this characteristic may do marvelous things for your career, it could have a devastating effect on interpersonal relationships.

In a simple, easy-to-follow, chime-filled format, Hartman suggests ways to capitalize on each color's positive attributes and offers advice on how to downplay its weaknesses. Did we mention the package also includes a personality test? (Running time: two hours; two cassettes)

How to understand other peoples motivations

I have always wondered about what makes people tick. The Color Code is the first personality theory that explains the movivations of a personality type. The Myers-Brigg personality theory which has 16 different categories, does a good job discussing "how" a certain personality type acts 90% of the time, but it never addresses the issue of "why" the person acts the way they do.
Here are the different personalities motivation: Red's core motivation is power. Blue's core motivation is the desire for intimacy. White's core desire is peace or the absence of conflict. Yellow's just want to have fun.
Here is a quick compare and contrast over one trait: Reds are dedicated to causes. Blues are dedicated to people. Once you have made a friend of a Blue, they are loyal for life. Both Blues and Reds resent Whites and Yellows lack of commitment.
Each of these personality types have a natural set of tendencies because of the core motivation.

BLUE CHARACTERISTICS:
Loyal forever once friendship is established.
Feels intense on many issues.
Blues never wake up happy or sad, they have to think about it first.
Blues cannot accept an emotion without taking full responsibility for it first.
Blues always seek purpose in life.
Rigid with principles and unwilling to negotiate.
Requires a purpose in order to play.

YELLOW CHARACTERISTICS:
A natural "people person"
Have an innate ability to be happy.
Yellows find it easy to relate to people of all ages.
Appreciate what they have vs. what they lack.
Love to entertain and be entertained.
The essential ingredient in every Yellow's life - an escape, an out, a chance to run away.
Lack of commitment.
Few intimate friends. A very large number of associates.

RED CHARACTERISTICS:
Reds speak their minds directly and honestly, regardless of their popularity.
Driving need is to convert the world to their beliefs.
If Reds feel that you have something worthwhile to offer, they will gladly give their efforts to assist you. Reds are relentless in their commitment to causes they believe in. When converted to a concept reds know no equal. Reds throw themselves into causes. They are difficult to convince, but equally difficult to restrain once committed.
RED'S THEME: "I've got things to do, places to go, and people to see."
Are not natural conversationalists - ARE natural lecturers.
Enjoy verbal argumentation.
No tolerance for stupidity or being unprepared.
Parade their values and opinions in front of others.
Take firm stands and expect others to follow.
Quite opinionated.
Very strong willed and determined.

WHITE CHARACTERISTICS:
Strong empathy skills.
Whites are tolerant of other's disagreeable behavior regardless of the personal discomfort they feel.
The chameleon is their trademark and reflects their ability to adapt and blend with everyone.
Whites are very uncomfortable in making decisions that may be wrong and avoid responsibilities that require it.
Passive-Agressive. Will sabatoge other people's future plans that involve them, for past resentments that have not been verbally expressed.

Helps you understand people & improve relationships

Though it is always dangerous to try and "categorize" people, Dr. Hartman's theories are a fantastic tool to help you understand and relate to the people around you. I put the concepts to use on a daily basis in both my professional and personal life.
After reading this book, suggesting it to several friends and family, and then discussing the ideas, I have had a number of revelations about both current and previous relationships. For example, I now have a much better understanding of my own family including my young "red" son. I now see that I need to give him "control" over more things in his life in order to be a `happy camper', and it has been an amazing thing to watch as we have done this with him.
The unique thing about Dr. Hartman's theory is that he talks about a person's root motivation, and how that motivation translates into certain behavoral characteristics. As you can read from other reviews here, there are four primary colors, each with distinct characteristics. While this may seem overly simplistic, it is surprisingly well-suited to use by us "normal" people (non psychiatric professionals). It is also remarkably accurate; there have been numerous time since reading this book that I have turned to people I know and said "I'll bet you are ..." or "I'll bet you like..." or so on, and been SPOT ON. It is really fun, if nothing else. :-)
Seriously, if you have a difficult boss, a tough relathionship with someone you are trying to work out, or just want to understand a better way to relate to people that you have historically struggled with, this is a great place to start, and really will get your wheels turning.
The book itself is reasonably well-written, and does a good job of clearly explaining the theories in very common terms. Dr. Hartman uses a lot of examples from his own practice to illustrate points, and tells stories that anyone can relate to. The book is organized in the beginning to provide an introduction to the four colors, and their positive and negative qualities - there is also a test to take in order to determine your own color. Regarding the test, let me give you some advice:
There are a lot of tough questions in the test - multiple choice questions where it will seem like more than one answer applies. I have taken the test several times, and achieved dramatically different results the last time I took the test. Why? Because the first time I took the test, I did it from the context of my life and experience TODAY (as an adult). The next time, I thought back to the way I was as a child, and when I could not decide on an answer, I asked my wife (who has known me for 15 years) or my mother. It was always surprising to me that the questions that I struggled with were easy for my wife or mother to answer - because they saw it from the context of the way I *really* am (and was as a child) rather than the way I *think* I am (or have become). The tricky thing is that we all adapt as adults, and if we are healthy, we adapt in ways that help us overcome the negative aspects of our "color" and accentuate the positive aspects of our "color". In some cases, we may even adopt characteristics of another "color". A great example of this might be a mother that is naturally a pretty strong "red" who after years of motherhood, has developed a very strong "blue" side in order to help her be more successful as a "mom" ("blues" are much more sensitive and nurturing, "reds" tend to be much more abrasive and intolerant)
Bottom line, this book is a quick read, and EVERYONE I have recommended it to has come back to me with praise for the book. Dr. Hartman is a bit of a self-promoter, though, and you may be put off by his mentions of his other books in the opening chapter. (I know that the hairs went up on the back of my neck a bit, but by chapter two they had settled back down). I am always suspicious when someone says "This book is great, and will help you to understand X, but if you want to REALLY understand Y, then you should buy my other book...." Despite the self-promotion in the opening chapter, I highly recommend this book.

Personality types analysis based on a color metaphor

"The Color Code: A New Way to See Yourself, Your Relationships, and Life" is a text on personality theory and motivation for each of four basic personality types. Dr. Hartman divides people into four basic personality types and describes the types using a colors metaphor.
People who fall into the red category are motivated by power. They need to influence others and are totally dedicated to causes that they believe in. Reds are strongly opinionated and have no tolerance for stupidity. People who fall into the blue category are motivated by a desire for intimacy. Intensely loyal and always seeking a purpose in life, Blues are cautious with their emotions and tend to be neither happy nor sad but just existing from day to day. Whites are motivated by a desire for peace. Strongly empathetic and tolerant, Whites mix in well with any group and will tolerate just about anyone in order to avoid conflict. Yellows are focused on fun and pleasure. They are naturally happy people and relate well with others regardless of ages, social status or occupation. A defining trait for Yellows is that they always need a way out or a chance to escape and run free. They have a large number of people that they associate with but very few true, close friends.
Dr. Hartman also discusses how to determine which personality type a person falls into. Once you know a person's color type you can understand why they act and react the way they do . Unlike many other texts on personality theory this one concentrates not only on what traits the person has but on what motivates them. Many books describe how a person in a particular category acts, but few focus on why they act that way. That is where this book differs.
An interesting book with a useful system for understanding people, I found it much more valuable for understanding what motivates certain types of people than more complex systems with sixteen or more personality types. A recommended read.

I don't expect complicated stories from this author but she has created a wonderful family in the Malorys. However, this book was an incredible disappointment. Katey and Boyd's story was at best a nouvella plunked down in what appears to be a book of boring backstory telling the reader all about the family members and their stories at the expense of Katey and Boyd's. First off her loyal readers know those stories and it would only have been important to tell the uninformed reader if it was relevant to this couples' story but it wasn't. The problem then was she spent so much time in the backstory of the Malory clan and the absolutely incredible cliched story of Sir Anthony and Katey that she forgot about Boyd and his need to court his lady.

At best all the reader saw was Boyd's lust for Katey and her need to be part of a family, this isn't the stuff of good romance fiction and Lyndsey knows that as should her editor. As this was a romance, where was the sexual tension and the "ah" factor? No black moment, no sexual tension. Don't expect it in this book, it isn't there. Sadly she finally spent the last three pages of the book bringing Katey and Boyd together which was the biggest sellout to her loyal readers and after thought at best. This couple deserve their own book and this one clearly isn't it. Makes one wonder if she actually wrote this book or was it the last book on a publisher's contract.

I would say buy the book used later on, but Loyal readers know the Malory stories already and Katey and Boyd just don't have enough of a story to bother to purchase this one new or used.. So my suggestion is to read her back list if you aren't familair with the Malorys and hope her next offering is more judiciously edited by her editor.

Far from her best

I've enjoyed the Malory series and the off-shoot Anderson books, but this one just irritated me.

The interaction between the hero and heroine was rushed at first when the vital foundation of their attraction needed to occur and they spent the rest of the time alternating in treating each other badly. Both had moments where they were 'too-stupid-to-live' and, although the reader knows from his inner thoughts and motivations that Boyd is not a villain, some of his actions were beyond smarmy and inexcusable.

The Malorys appeared which is usually a bonus, but at one point Anthony and James (whose glib back-and-forth is becoming tiresome IMO) took over the entire story with a reveal that wasn't even hinted at until halfway through the book. Considering how much the characters involved appeared in the first half, that whole plot point (even with its importance) seemed like an afterthought. Boyd eventually dropped out entirely due to this story line and we didn't even check back in with him until three pages before the end when he showed up for the HEA.

During the Big Moment (similar to Danny's experience in 'A Loving Scoundrel') Boyd wasn't even there. It was Katey with the two Malory brothers and all of the chapters dealing with that business were long and detailed (in some cases taking pages to retell other Malory novels which is annoying to say the least when they weren't crucial to this story).

I'm very open to new things in novels. I don't need the traditional template. But this was unorganized and had a 'dashed off' feel to it. It felt as if the author had grabbed a few romance novel staples, strung them together and plugged a couple of decent characters into the creation. As a result, I didn't like either of their actions leading to the HEA and felt they needed more moments that were unsullied by manipulation.

I give it two stars because somehow I really did want them to end up together. And I could see why Katey came around and I was glad it finally happened. Otherwise I would have given it only one star.

I like Johanna Lindsay and I think she created two good characters here, which is very important, but then she did them a disservice by weighing them down with a top-heavy, disorganized story line.

And one last note. While I do enjoy seeing the Malorys I don't think it's necessary to retell each of their novels with so much detail. It takes away from the current story. They're just support characters at this point, so it's not necessary to refer to so many details that don't have an impact on the story at hand.

EDIT TO ADD: It's been brought to my attention and now I remember that the twist was indeed foreshadowed, however I never felt the connection itself had been set up. Possibly the feeling that it had dropped into my lap was the unnecessary nature of the twist along with the incredible coincidence involved in having it come about. But fair is fair, the hints did occur. I stand corrected. :)

CRAIG MURRAY was British ambassador at the embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 2002 to 2005, having previously served as a diplomat in Africa and Eastern Europe. He is rector of the University of Dundee and an honorary research fellow at the University of Lancaster School of Law. He lives in London with his partner, Nadira.

Disturbing but Gripping Read

The book details the real-life story of Craig Murray, a successful British career diplomat that became a pawn in the Great Game. Assigned to become Ambassador to Uzbekistan, he took over a very small embassy with all the attendant issues (morale, support, etc.) He also very quickly became aware of horrific human rights abuses in Uzbekistan that have been substantiated by other NGOs like Human Rights Watch.

His subsequent attempt to stand up against a regime that enjoyed boiling people alive, executing real or perceived enemies of the state in extra-judicial killings, etc. subsequently got Mr. Murray into trouble with the Blair administration since he was stirring the pot with one of their erstwhile allies in the "War on Terror". However, as Mr. Murray so eloquently lays out, it is precisely this type of tyrannical regime that leads to the rise of fundamentalist, extremist groups in the first place.

Mr. Murray went to extraordinary lengths to represent British interests in Uzbekistan and traveled the whole nation to get to know it better. Along the way, he tried his best to encourage Democracy and Rule of Law, a novelty in Uzbekistan. Some of his more dangerous and coloful confrontations included standing up to various local government officials, thugs, etc. and are recounted in gripping detail. It is evident that Mr. Murray risked considerable harm to himself.

Like most other diplomats in Uzbekistan, Mr. Murray could have simply looked the other way, just as the British government instructed him to when he reported human rights abuses and other issues with the regime that the Blair and Bush administrations wanted to cozy up to. That is not to say that he is a knight in shining armor, but he seems to be pretty honest about his personal flaws.

When one of his internal Memos to the Foreign Office decrying the human rights abuses in Uzbekistan was leaked to the press, the British government took extraordinary steps to kick him out of the Foreign Service. With his departure, the British Foreign Service lost one of their more courageous and competent ambassadors, though perhaps he was a bit too honest and outspoken for the diplomatic club.

This book was originally published under the title "Murder in Samarkand" in Britain. This version names more names regarding the folk working behind the scenes to kick Mr. Murray out of the Foreign Service, thanks to US freedom of speech laws. The British paperback version has more pictures, however. It's a very interesting read, and I highly recommend it.

Fascinating book and character

First a clarification: I read "Murder in Samarkand" the British version of this book. It is an excellent, engaging and fast read. Murray details in a way I have not seen before the inner workings and nitty gritty politics of diplomacy during the "war on terror". It is a tale that should be of great interest to American readers as a different perspective on a seemingly forgotten part of the war. The book is split roughly between three topic areas which are intertwined and reported on as a first person narrative. It moves quickly and jumps between what he is doing as the British ambassador in Uzbekistan especially on human rights issues, the internal politics of the British Foreign Service as they try to restrain then fire their gonzo swashbuckling ambassador, and his description of a boozy, skirt chasing and not very discrete personal life as ambassador. In the end it is a story of a man with a strong sense of justice who exhibits exceptional courage and uses his position to stand up against horrific human rights abuses. Murray clearly has a strong sense of honor and justice and the capacity for wit, style, and resourcefulness under pressure. It is also a tragicomedy of sorts as captured by the US book title and as evidenced by the fact that he lost his career but got the belly dancer.

Uzbekistan was an important sideshow in the post 9/11 "war on terror" in Afghanistan and its story has not been well covered by US media. As part of the war on the Taliban, the US sought and got cooperation from the Uzbek government to establish a major air base within spitting distance of Afghanistan and made its deal with the devil in order to do so. The Brits, or at least Tony Blair's government, had little active role in that but did support the US. Murray, as the new ambassador, quickly fell out of step with the Blair government and the book is largely focused on the efforts of the now rogue ambassador to expose and limit the ghastly human rights abuses being carried out by the Uzbek government under the guise of supporting the war on terror. The government of Uzbekistan is kleptocracy and a police state throwback to Stalinist times. Craig Murray was one of a very few (and clearly the leading) western diplomats who accurately pointed out this inconvenient fact and its consequences. The toady US ambassadors at the time failed to take a stand and actively worked to undermine Murray. The book describes events occurring before the 2005 massacre of hundreds of protesters in Andejan which finally caused the US to back away from supporting the Ubek government.

This is not a simple history or rant against a totalitarian regime. It is a first person documentary of issues that both the US and British governments were trying to sweep under the rug. Murray's decision to incorporate some mundane details of diplomatic life actually works very well by creating a context for what is going on and by making an otherwise very political topic much more than just a polemic. His single handed quixotic struggle to expose the harm caused by the US/Uzbek marriage of convenience and the clearly horrific abuses of human rights and democracy in the region would become wearisome and dry without the spice of booze, belly dancers, and clandestine meetings. The book at times seems to deal almost as much with his unambassadorial lifestyle as it does with politics but frankly it makes a much better read because of that. Murray's memory for detail is remarkable and appears to be quite accurate according to friends who attended some of the events he describes. Having worked myself in Tashkent during the time Murray is writing about I'd add that he really doesn't exaggerate in describing Uzbekistan or the difficult lives and fears of the average citizen.

Murray could well have titled the book "Fear and Loathing in Tashkent" and tried to list Hunter Thompson as a coauthor. Hollywood would (?will) certainly not need to spice this story up for the big screen. I don't know if Murray is naturally as open as he comes across in the book or whether he has painted his self portrait (as described in the US title) simply because he thought it best to put everything on the table himself rather than let his enemies snipe at him over lifestyle issues. Murray obviously did take his job, as he defined it, very seriously and in the end did sacrifice his career rather than bend on his principles. Although he addresses some of his own foibles as part and parcel of his boozy adventures, this is not an autobiography. His marriage ends halfway through the book but he never lets on about any trouble at home (though it is hard to imagine any spouse putting up with his antics). We don't hear about the break up of his family other than noting that the final straw was his obsession and open courting of a beautiful belly dancer half his age. (I told you Hollywood would not need to spice this story up...too bad Jack Nicholson is too old to play the lead).

The book is really a combination expose, polemic and titillating confession that just works as a great read. His writing is lucid, sharp and he never drones when making political points. One cannot help but admire his willingness to risk and destroy his diplomatic career in the service of a greater good. He was right and I suspect history will be kind to him. As best I can tell he is currently an itinerant writer living in London. One comes away from this book admiring him and hoping that he will bounce back into some human rights leadership role again. And, if he doesn't, I hope at least he finds peace and happiness with his belly dancer.

an eye-opening book on the diplomatic world

I read Mr. Murray's memoir of his service in Uzbekistan with great interest because I lived in Uzbekistan at the same time he was there. Living and working in Uzbekistan meant living in a blinding fog of misinformation and government propaganda. After reading 'Dirty Diplomacy' I can understand now to what extent the Uzbek government, as well as my own American government, justified torture and corruption in the name of its 'war against terror'. Mr. Murray's book is also enlightening about the dealings of the diplomatic world. A very informative read.

Before You Take the First Step -- Reflect, Discern

I can trace every success or failure in my life back to something I did or didn't decide effectively. Whether in the course of developing relationships, doing business, selecting investments, or accepting invitations, I've found a direct correlation between my location on life's highway and my decisions to turn, exit, stop, or start. Extenuating circumstances beyond my control were always involved, yet more times than not, I was a victim or victor of my own making, achieving or failing because I did or did not put in place the necessary prerequisites to accomplish my desired goals. Now, to be sure, I am not a self-flagellating individual who uses this premise to blame and belittle myself for past decisions and their consequences. No, I am saying that my decisions set the course of my life.

I have now been married to the same woman, the mother of my children, for over twenty-five years. That relationship decision has set the climate of my life much like a thermostat on a heating system sets the temperature in a room. In keeping with this concept, persons in a room may not know that the temperature is affected by the smallest incremental movement of a drop of mercury in a device at an unnoticed location. In spite of its invisibility to the inhabitants of the room it still affects the comfort level of everyone present. Similarly, my key relationship decision, and many other decisions I have made, affect me and all those around me. Good results are a direct reflection of my ability to think through, discern correctly, and move succinctly from the trajectory of my last decision.

We All Have Our Own Unique Decision-Making Process

Sometimes we have to make a small decision such as choosing a new hair style or whether to paint the bedroom sky blue or periwinkle. Other times decisions are larger, such as whether or not to move to a new city for a better job, or to keep an old one. We each have our own style and ways to approach the decision-making process. Some of us tend to know exactly what we want. We make up our minds quickly and act immediately. Others prefer to deliberate for a long time, weighing all the angles and options before deciding what to do.

Reflect -- Discern -- Decide

Good decision making in relationships, business, anything, results from a process of reflection -- discernment -- decision. This truth recently emerged in a new light for me. I have had the same COO in my for-profit company for nearly ten years. It was interesting to me to note an observation he made about me. Often people who work with you notice things about you that you have not realized about yourself.

He advised some business constituents that it was unwise to approach me with a presentation that was long and laborious. He had noticed what I jokingly refer to as my ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), that my attention wearied quickly during presentations like those that included the history of a company and who the founder married in 1802. I really would rather be spared the guillotine of losing my head in the details that are largely irrelevant to what I need to decide. In other words, cut to the chase, answer my questions, and leave me to my own thoughts.

He also shared with them that the hardest part of doing business with me was the millions of questions I ask in the name of doing due diligence. I smiled at my COO's remarks and thought they were an accurate depiction of my inward reality. Even my staff members on the not-for-profit side of my organization have learned to come to me expecting multiple questions and to be armed with the answers before setting the meeting.

I do not apologize for this proclivity; I believe that good leaders anticipate tough questions and have at their disposal the answers that predict issues, struggles, and maladies that are inherent in the normal processes of doing business.

Sound decisions are based on great information, so the more significant the question, the more due diligence I require. I believe important decisions demand stewardship. If we are to be good stewards of great opportunities, we must show respect for those opportunities by the level of diligence to which we prepare for the next move.

Relationship decisions are among the most opportune choices in your life, and I remind you that no others leave as many footprints alongside your own on life's journey as those you make to unite yourself with another person emotionally, sexually, spiritually.

Curb Appeal

Several years ago, my wife and I purchased a new home. We did so after selling our previous home and nearly doubling our initial expenditure for it. I searched ardently through the better neighborhoods in our city trying to find a home that would yield a similar return in the future should we decide to sell. I had found a good house in a great neighborhood and began to discuss with my friends and family the possibility of purchasing it. To my surprise, one of my friends advised me against getting the house. He said, "I know you so well that I can hear your uncertainty in how you explained the value of the proposed home. You seem as though you are trying to convince yourself that the deal is a good one. In other words, thou dost protest too loudly."

My friend seemed to know that I wasn't totally happy with the decision to buy that house. It was a great deal, the house would sell easily later, and would no doubt yield a return. The problem was that I didn't really like the house. I liked the deal -- but not the house!

After this observation, I had to reflect. My goal of getting a house with curb appeal -- that was marketable for resale -- was not equally important as getting a house that I liked. Ultimately, I decided that my enjoyment of the house was a significant consideration that I had minimized.

Friends, many times we make poor decisions because we have decided what success looks like. Due diligence must include a heart check. Is the goal good looks or good character? Wealth or happiness? Safety or excitement? Is the goal a matter of marrying someone who looks good on paper or looks good in person? Is the goal to find a person who is economically sound or emotionally stable? Yes, you are right. It is possible to have both. But neither is possible if you don't decide that these are the goals. What does success look like to you, what comprises a successful relationship to you?

After looking at over twenty-eight homes all across the metroplex, I made a choice. By the time I was ready to choose, I had examined the return rate on my investment, the likelihood of foreclosure from my loan, a feasibility study that looked at fair market value (FMV), and comparable properties similar to my investment. The difference this time was that I also factored in the importance of liking what I was going to spend a good number of years paying for.

You may not be able to imagine buying a home without this vital consideration. In fact, some people make how they feel about their home, how much they like their home, their number one criterion for its purchase. They don't consider the kind of neighborhood it's in, its potential resale value, or where the market for homes in their metro area will be in five years. They only know that it has a great view, new appliances, and feels bright and cheery. Maybe you are less inclined to focus on the business of real estate and have little regard to the profitability of a house. Perhaps you gravitate by nature to the cosmetics of the house and your ability to enjoy it and decorate it. I realize that there are many buyers who are more interested in the feng shui of a house, the convenience of a functional kitchen, and the nearness to schools, and who never consider the resale value.

Both sets of factors -- your head and your heart -- must come into the equation in making this or any significant decision. You must consider both the hard data as well as the intangible internals.

So with both sets of data in mind, I finally bought a beautiful family estate on some extensive farm land! Farm land here is a good buy, and the house was all my rather large family would need as we grow into grandchildren and in-laws. My new property, with its extensive acreage, provides a home for bobcats, coyotes, and a few hungry Angus cows. Every morning when I wake up to the sound of squirrels playing in the tree outside my window and rabbits scurrying across the grounds, I know that the value of my home is not just the appraisal. It also includes the happiness for which there is no price tag. This reminds me of the MasterCard commercial in which the price of numerous items are listed followed by the value of the total experience, "priceless."

Small Decisions vs. Large, Financial Decisions

There is certainly a difference between making small daily decisions such as what to wear or what to order at dinner versus making a larger decision that will have greater consequences in your life. Large decisions, like making a major purchase such as buying a house, can have ramifications for your financial health for years to come. Moving to a new town or community could affect your relationships with your family and friends and could impact your kids, if you have them, for the rest of their lives.

You are also going to have to make decisions about relationships in your life. Considerations such as whether to enter into one, get out of one, or change the status of a relationship are decisions you'll have to make throughout your life. And those choices are not as easy as the prevalent Hollywood romantic movies today would lead you to believe. In the movies, things typically turn out happily ever after.
