About the Author
Diane Duane is the author of The Door Into Fire, which was nominated for the World Science Fiction Society’s John W. Campbell Award for best new science fiction/fantasy writer two years in a row. PART ONE

My Enemy, My Ally

Chapter One

Her name, to which various people had recently been appending curses, was Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu. Her rank, in the common tongue, was khre'Riov: commander-general. Her serial number was a string of sixteen characters that by now she knew as well as she knew her fourth name, though they meant infinitely less to her. And considering these matters in such a fashion was at least marginally appropriate just now, for she was in a trap.

How long she would remain there, however, remained to be seen.

At the moment her patience was mostly intact, but her spirit had moved her to rattle the bars of the cage a bit. Ael propped her elbow on her desk, rested her chin on her hand, and said to her cabin's wall screen, "Hwaveyiir. Erein tr'Khaell."

The screen flicked on, and there was the bridge, and poor Ante-centurion tr'Khaell just as he had been twenty minutes ago, still hunched over and pretending to fiddle with his communications boards. At the sight of Ael he straightened quickly and said, "Ie, khre'Riov?"

Don't play the innocent with me, child, thought Ael. You should have had that dispatch decoded and translated ten minutes ago . . . as well you know. "Erein, eliukh hwio' 'ssuy llas-mene arredhaud'eitroi?"

She said it politely enough, but the still, low-lidded look she gave him was evidently making it plain to tr'Khaell that if Ael had to ask him again about what was holding up the dispatch's deciphering, it would go hard with him. Sweat broke out on tr'Khaell's forehead. "Ie, khre'Riov, sed ri-thlaha nei' yhreill-ien ssuriu mnerev dhaarhiin-emenorriul -- "

Oh indeed! I know how fast that computer runs; I was building them with my own hands before you knew which end to hold a sword by. Of course, you can't just come out and tell me that the security officer ordered you to let her read the dispatch before I saw it, now can you? "Rhi siuren, Erein."

Poor tr'Khaell's face gave Ael the impression that t'Liun was going to take rather longer than "five minutes" to read the dispatch. Tr'Khaell looked panic-striken. "Khre'Riov -- " he started to say. But "Ta'khoi," Ael said to the screen, and it flicked off.

Pitiable, Ael thought. Truly I could feel sorry for him. But if he chooses to sell his loyalty to two commanders at once, who am I to deprive him of the joy of being caught between them? Perhaps he'll learn better. And after a second she laughed once, softly, as much at herself as at tr'Khaell. Perhaps the galaxy will stop rotating.

She pushed away from the desk and leaned back in her comfortable chair, considering with calm irony how little her surroundings looked like the cage they actually were. They truly think they've deceived me, she thought, amused and contemptuous, looking around at the spare luxury of her command cabin. Pad the kennel with velvets, they say to each other; feed the old thrai on fat flesh and blood wine, put her in command of a fleet, and she won't notice that the only ones who pay any attention to her orders are the ones stuck inside the bars with her. Ael's lips curled slightly upward at the thought. "Susse-thrai" had been the name bestowed upon her, half in anger, half in affection, by her old crew on Bloodwing; the keen-nosed, cranky, wily old she-beast, never less dangerous than when you thought her defenseless, and always growing new teeth far back in her throat to replace the old ones broken in biting out the last foe's heart. You might cage a thrai, you might poke it through the bars and laugh; but it would find a way to be avenged for the insult. It would break out and tear off your leg and eat it before your face -- or run away and wait till you had died of old age, then come back and excrete on your grave.

Then Ael frowned at herself, annoyed. "Crude," she said to the room, eyes flicking up to the ceiling-corner by the bed as she wondered whether t'Liun had managed to bug the place already since last week. "I grow crude, as they do." Chew on that, you vacuum-headed creature, and wonder what it means, thought Ael, getting up to pace her cage.

The most annoying part was that it was true. That courtesy, honor, noble behavior should be cast aside by the young, perceived as a useless hindrance to expediency, was bad enough. But that she should begin to sink to their level herself, descending into brute-beast metaphors and savagery instead of the straightforward dealing that had been tradition for four thousand years of civilization -- that was galling. I will not fight them with their own methods, Ael thought. That is the surest way to become them. I will come by my victories honestly. And as for Sunseed --

She stopped in front of another of her cabin's luxuries, one better than private 'fresher or sleeping silks or key lighting. Beyond the wide port, space yawned black, with stars burning in it -- stars that at Cuirass's present sublight speed hung quite still, apparently going nowhere. As I am, she thought, but the thought was reflex, and untrue. Ael grimaced again and leaned her forehead against the cool clearsteel.

In one way, she had no one to blame for where she was right now but herself. When she had heard about the Sunseed project based at Levaeri V, and had begun to realize what it could do to Rihannsu civilization if fully implemented, shock and horror had stung her into swift action. She had taken leave from Bloodwing and gone home to ch'Rihan to lobby against the project -- openly speaking out against it in the Senate, and privately making the rounds of her old political cronies, all those old warrior-Senators and those few comrades in the Praetorate who owed her favors. However, Ael had not realized the extent to which the old warriors were being outweighed, or in some cases subverted or cowed, by the young ones -- the hot-blooded children who wanted everything right now, who wanted the easy, swift victories that the completion of Sunseed would bring them. Honorless victories, against helpless foes; but the fierce young voices now rising in the Senate cared nothing about that. They wanted safety, security, a world without threats, a universe in which they could swoop down on defenseless ships or planets and take what they wanted.

Thieves, Ael thought. They have no desire to be warriors, fighting worthy foes for what they want, and winning or losing according to their merits. They want to be robbers, like our accursed allies the Klingons. Raiders, who stab in the back and loot men's corpses, or worlds. And as for those of us who remember an older way, a better way, they wait for us to die. Or in some cases, they hurry us along. . . .

She pushed herself away from the cool metal of the port, breathed out once. Somewhere among those stars, out in that blackness, ch'Rihan and ch'Havran hung, circling one another majestically in the year's slow dance around amber Eisn; two green-golden gems, cloud-streaked, seagirt, burning fair. But she would probably never walk under those clouds again, or beside those seas, as a result of that last visit to the sigil-hung halls of the Senate. The young powers in the High Command, suspicious of Ael from the first, now knew for sure that she was opposed to them, and their reaction to her opposition had been swift and thorough. They dared not exile her or murder her, not openly; she was after all a war hero many times over, guilty of no real crime. Instead they had "honored" her, having Ael sent out on a long tour of duty, into what was ostensibly a post of high command and great peril. Command she wielded, but with eyes watching her, spies of various younger Senators and Praetors. And as for peril . . . it came rarely, but fatally, here in the Outmarches -- the deadly peaceful space that the power surrounding most of it called the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Names, Ael thought with mild irony, names . . . How little they have to do with the truth, sometimes. The great cordon of space arbitrarily thrown about Eisn was hardly neutral. At best it was a vast dark hiding-place into which ships of both sides occasionally dodged, preparing for intelligence-gathering forays on the unfriendly neighbor. As for "Romulan" -- after first hearing the word in Federation Basic, rather than by universal translator, Ael had become curious to understand the name the Empire's old foes had given her world, and had done some research into it. She had been distastefully fascinated to find the word's meaning rooted in some weird Terran story of twin brothers abandoned in the wild, and there discovered and given suck by a brute beast rather like a thrai. It would take a Terran to think of something so bizarre.

But whether one called Eisen's paired worlds ch'Rihan and ch'Havran or Romulus and Remus, Ael knew she was unlikely to ever walk either of them again. Never again to walk through Airissuin's purple meads, she thought, gazing out at the starry darkness. Never to see that some loved one had hung up the name-flag for me; never to climb Eilairiv and look down on the land my mothers and fathers worked for a thousand years, the lands we held with the plowshare and the sword . . . For the angry young voices in the Senate, Mrian and Hei and Llaaseil and the rest, had put her safely out of their way; and here, while they held power, she would stay. They would wait and let time do what their lack of courage or some poor tattered rag of honor forbade them.

Accidents happened in the Neutral Zone, after all. Ships far from maintenance suddenly came to grief. That was likely enough, in this poor secondhand warbird with which they'd saddled her, this flying breakdown looking for a place to happen. Crews rebelled against discipline, mutinied, on long hauls . . . and that was likely too, considering the reprehensible lot of rejects and incompetents with whom she was trapped here. Ael thought longingly of her own...

This 5 book series is arguably the very best Trek ever written

Books 1-4 of this 5 book series and these may be the very best Star Trek books ever written. To finish the series you will need book 5 'The Empty Chair'. These along with her other book 'Spock's World' paint a far better history of Vulcans and Romulans (Rihansuu) than has ever been shown on the screen.

A good read for the Devoted Trekker

The book was as advertised. A compilation of several previous Star Trek novels in one volume. The stories give the Romulans a nobility and savagery that never tends to get explored in the TV series and movies. The stories are almost thirty years old, but they still hold up.

A great series for any Star Trek fan, definitely not to be missed.

Fascinating Account of Johnson's Impeachment

What would you say if someone were to ask you to come up with one fact about President Andrew Johnson? Many would respond by saying that he was the 17th President of the United States or that Johnson succeeded to the Presidency following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Some might add that Johnson only served one term. I'm sure many of us would recall that President Andrew Johnson was impeached by the House of Representatives but acquitted by one vote by the U.S. Senate. Many of us might also state our belief that the reason Johnson was impeached was that he disagreed with the harsh and vengeful policies of the Radical Republicans and because, following in Lincoln's footsteps, he adopted a compassionate and conciliatory attitude toward the South. The reality, as David O. Stewart amply demonstrates in this book, is quite different. Johnson was a staunch states' rights advocate and didn't see a problem with the former Confederate states doing whatever they wanted now that the Civil War was over. Ex-Confederates were elected to government office and Southern governments imposed Black Codes to deny former slaves their rights. President Johnson also opposed passage of the 14th Amendment.
Some of us may remember having read President John Fitzgerald Kennedy's Profiles in Courage and will recall his account of the courage of Kansas Senator Edmund G. Ross and I quote, "the man who saved a President and who, as a result, may have preserved for ourselves and posterity constitutional government in the United States." Again, David Stewart shows us in this book that the reality is quite different. In a post-Watergate world, we've become all to accustomed to stories of political crime and corruption but I think that anyone who reads Impeached will be shocked at the scale of bribery and patronage in 19th Century American politics. Mr. Stewart restores Thaddeus Stevens to his rightful position in American history and provides a informative discussion of the concept of "high crimes and misdemeanors." Anyone looking for fresh insights into the history of American government and politics will want to read this book.

What a good writer David O. Stewart is! This book is absolutely fascinating. Frankly, I never even heard of President Johnson before, and didn't know that any president other than Nixon had ever been impeached. Johnson was vice president when Lincoln was assassinated so he was the president who wound up overseeing reconstruction of the South after the war. He himself had been a southern democrat and was very sympathetic with the southern states. Congress, on the other hand, consisted of representatives from only the northern states, since the southern states had all seceded. So the president and the congress has extremely different views about how to proceed. Stewart is a great historian, also a great legal scholar, and also, to boot, a great story teller. Being quite the Lincoln fan, I've read up on so much of his life, that sometimes its difficult to learn anything much new about the man. Oh, from time to time I pick up a fascinating book (the latest is this The Lincolns: Portrait of a Marriage, but for the most part, history repeats itself, maybe told in a different way. I never really considered what life was like in the country in the aftermath of Lincoln's assassination, and the terrible rift our country suffered as a result. Impeached, a brilliant new book by David O. Stewart, remarkably adds much to the Lincoln canon, much like ripples in a pond after a boulder has been tossed in.

Stewart picks up his book right at the point of Lincoln's second inauguration, when a supposedly nervous Andrew Johnson makes his first horrible impression by downing whisky prior to his swearing in, and walks into the event visibly tipsy. This rather auspicious start quickly sets off a series of events, which quickly lead to the Radical Republicans in Congress working towards kicking out the President. Corralled by Congressman stalwart Thaddeus Stevens, who gives the meaning of the word persistent a run for the money, the RRs attempt to kick good ol' southern President Johnson out of office for frustrating the will of Congress in the path towards Reconstruction. By passing legislation that obviously crosses the line of Constitutionality, and having Johnson ignore it, they set up the man for quite a fall.

Andrew Johnson springs their trap in a battle over equally stubborn Secretary of War Edwin Stanton's refusal to leave his office after being dismissed by Johnson (Stanton actually sets up camp in the office to avoid being locked out of it). With events resembling something that not even Shakespeare could concoct, personalities such as U.S. Grant and William T. Sherman are dragged into the middle of this melee, with honor and duty being displayed in front.

What surprised me is the "character" of Andrew Johnson. Not having studied much about him at all, I pictured him as a milquetoast wimpy character who was bullied around by Congress, even though he was carrying out Lincoln's wishes. Boy, was I wrong. First, Stewart's Johnson is a fighter, and unfortunately, due possibly to his overinflated ego, an instigator in many of the events that led to his problems. By refusing to work with Congress, and merely try to steamroll over them, Johnson planted the seeds of the battle. Also, Johnson aggressively worked to ease the conditions of Reconstruction on his favored south, making life difficult for the recently freed slaves and the armies that tried to quell the anti-black sentiment that soon festered in the former confederacy. Johnson was no supporter of civil rights for the freedmen, and made no efforts to protect them. Perhaps that's Johnson's true legacy, over the failed impeachment.

Stewart's writing is fast paced, not overly burdened with people and names to remember that sometimes befall other non-fiction books. His prose evokes the time, explains an event, issue, philosophy, and then moves on with his story, making for an extremely pleasurable read.

One often thinks about what Reconstruction would have been like under Lincoln. At Stewart himself wonders, he thinks that Lincoln too made have been softer on the south like Johnson, but would have definitely not allowed the backlash against the freed slaves. Maybe with Lincoln, the Jim Crow laws, lynchings, and "separate but equal" treatment of minorities would have been lessened, maybe not. In any case, we had Johnson, who through the bully pulpit of his misbegotten presidency, led the country to create a system of unfairness that lasted nearly a hundred years. Perhaps the RR's should have succeeded, even though they never really quite had enough to convict the man.

Don't Underestimate Best Friends

Everyone overlooked the power that best friends have as a combined power. Blair and Ardith are from opposite lifestyles, but that is never an issue, until one night. Ardith has alcoholic parents who allow her brother and his friends to party at their house, so they can be seen as "cool". Blair is an only child. Her mother is not stopping until she becomes a judge. Blair's mom is all about appearences. Mom goes too far. The only person who actually sees them as who they are is Officer Dave.

Read this book, then go back and read the beginning again. This is a book you just can't put down.

Blair and Ardith are best friends. They are fifteen, in the ninth grade, and have miserable, though very different, home lives.

Ardith lives in a party house. Her parents are nightly hosts to a group of drunken teenage boys. Without limits, the boys control the house and any female that dares to enter it. Not even Ardith is safe from their advances. Blair comes from an affluent family. Her parents are successful in their careers, have a new home, and are poised to rise through the local social and political ranks. Now her mother is making decisions to shape the family image; decisions that are wrenching Blair away from the those she loves most. In addition to their family problems, Blair and Ardith are now becoming victims of the school rumor mill and some very cruel classmates. How much can they be expected to tolerate?

LEFTOVERS is a dramatic and disturbing story of two girls who have been pushed to great lengths. It is written in alternating points of view, as each girl describes the events that led them to a final, desperate act. LEFTOVERS is a captivating book that will keep you turning the pages.

A Good Addiction Reviews

Wiess has created yet another astounding masterpiece. Of the three books she's published, I think this one is my favorite. The story is so well put together and so astoundingly heartbreaking. This book has pulled me through so many emotions, conclusions and obstacles in a way few other have. I both loved and hated these girls, admiring them and belittling them. This is another book I am not even sure how to review because there are simply too many things to say about it. Bottom line- read it.

The perspective alternates between Blair and Ardith, furthering it by everything being put in terms of you don't say this instead of I didn't say this. The reader is very much thrust right into every single thing these girls thought and endured through the direct verbalization alone. Compound that with Weiss' phenomenal grasp of the written language and her immense ability to weave raw, gut wrenching emotions into words and the product is something that will stick with everyone who reads it in one way or another. Even if the story turns you off, the writing stands out and should remain in mind.

Taken alone, the personal history of both Blair and Aridth are enough to grip a person- twined together, it is almost astoundingly surreal. Watching the slow changing and fading of their innocence, forcing them to grow up is one of the biggest foci of this book and a rough one to swallow. Reading this, the most obvious feelings come up- a strong desire to simply take these girls from their families, uproot them and place them somewhere else. But the fact remains while these are fictional characters, there are numerous teenagers out there in similar circumstances, ranging across the wealth spectrum. Are we removing them? No- and that is one of the biggest points of this book and it is so astoundingly well made.

The ending was breathtaking and astounding and pretty much any other related word. This is the sort of ending a completely adore in books and left me with a million burnings thoughts and questions, sparking my own `what ifs' from the very ones that spurred this book for Wiess. She doesn't simply close the story- she leaves you thinking, calculating, and considering.

In every way, this book deserves 5 stars if not more. From the strong characters, even stronger and painfully logical development of them, to the voice it is written in and the plot itself- added in with Wiess' knack for saying things perfectly- this piece is a work of genius. Many of the events that happened are ones I didn't expect but that seems to be the case with her books- there is simply no way to predict where things are going to head next. If you can stomach the raw emotions, the angsty plot line, and the overall content, then read this book. It is well worth it.

In his introduction to Everything's Eventual, horror author extraordinaire Stephen King describes how he used a deck of playing cards to select the order in which these 14 tales of the macabre would appear. Judging by the impact of these stories, from the first words of the darkly fascinating "Autopsy Room Four" to the haunting final pages of "Luckey Quarter," one can almost believe King truly is guided by forces from beyond.

His first collection of short stories since the release of Nightmares & Dreamscapes in 1993, Everything's Eventual represents King at his most undiluted. The short story format showcases King's ability to spook readers using the most mundane settings (a yard sale) and comfortable memories (a boyhood fishing excursion). The dark tales collected here are some of King's finest, including an O. Henry Prize winner and "Riding the Bullet," published originally as an e-book and at one time expected by some to be the death knell of the physical publishing world. True to form, each of these stories draws the reader into King's slightly off-center world from the first page, developing characters and atmosphere more fully in the span of 50 pages than many authors can in a full novel.

For most rabid King fans, chief among the tales in this volume will be "The Little Sisters of Eluria," a novella that first appeared in the fantasy collection Legends, set in King's ever-expanding Dark Tower universe. In this story, set prior to the first Dark Tower volume, the reader finds Gunslinger Roland of Gilead wounded and under the care of nurses with very dubious intentions. Also included in this collection are "That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French," the story of a woman's personal hell; "1408," in which a writer of haunted tour guides finally encounters the real thing; "Everything's Eventual," the title story, about a boy with a dream job that turns out to be more of a nightmare; and "L.T.'s Theory of Pets," a story of divorce with a bloody surprise ending.

King also includes an introductory essay on the lost art of short fiction and brief explanatory notes that give the reader background on his intentions and inspirations for each story. As with any occasion when King directly addresses his dear Constant Readers, his tone is that of a camp counselor who's almost apologetic for the scare his fireside tales are about to throw into his charges, yet unwilling to soften the blow. The story went on to win the 1996 O. Henry Award for Best Short Story, confirming what King fans have known for years that the author is not only immensely popular but immensely talented, a modern-day counterpart to Twain, Hawthorne, Dickens. "The Man in the Black Suit" appears in this hefty collection, King's first since Nightmares and Dreamscapes (1993), along with three other extraordinary New Yorker tales: "All That You Love Will Be Carried Away," an intensely moving story of a suicidal traveling salesman who collects graffiti; "The Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French," about a woman caught in a fatal loop of deja vu; and "The Death of Jack Hamilton," a gritty, witty tale of Dillinger's gang on the lam. King's talent doesn't always burn at peak, of course, and there are lesser tales here, too, but none that most writers wouldn't be proud to claim, like the slight but affecting "Luckey," about a poor cleaning woman given a "luckey" coin as a tip, or "L.T.'s Theory of Pets," which King cites as his favorite of the collection, but whose shift from humor to horror comes off as arbitrary, at least on the page (the story first appeared in audiobook form).Then there's "Riding the Bullet," the novella that put King on the cover of Time and rattled the publishing community not for its content a suspenseful encounter with the dead but for its mode of delivery, as an e-book, and "The Little Sisters of Eleuria," another resonant entry in King's self-proclaimed "magnus opus" about Roland the Gunslinger (Roland will return, King lets on, in a now-finished 900-page Dark Tower novel, Wolves of the Calla). Fourteen stories, most of them gems, featuring an array of literary approaches, plus an opinionated intro from King about the "(Almost) Lost Art" of the short story: this will be the biggest selling story collection of the year, and why not? No one does it better.

Stephen King at his best

I was an avid Stephen King reader in high school, but I haven't really liked some of his later stuff. It seems like he gets really involved and I lose interest. I'm not trying to be insulting, it's just me, and obviously he's doing just fine without my business. But, and that's a big but, I loved this book!!! Apparently short stories from Mr King are perfect for me. I felt like I was reading a book he'd written in the seventies or eighties. Every story, except one, had me riveted to my seat. My kindle died and I just moved closer to the outlet and continued reading. 1408, the main reason I bought this book, was worth it. I'm reading, wondering when anything scary is going to happen, only to realize it's already happening and I'm terrified. Trust me, especially if you loved Stephen King like I did (Salems Lot, Carrie) then this book is for you.

Strong Collection

This book is a collection of 14 shorts stories by Stephen King. The longest story is a prequel to the Dark Tower series and will doubtless be of interest to fans of that series. In recent months, a number of people have likely bought this collection to read "1408" so they can see the story that the movie was based on. I confess that this was my motivation and it's certainly worth reading. Because it is a true short story, it doesn't involve nearly as many twists and turns as the movie, and ends more cleanly.

The title of this collection comes from what may well be the finest story of the lot. It's a quirky tale of a young man with the ability to affect other people using symbols and writing. He narrates the story himself, sounds like the village idiot, and has just about the strangest job imaginable.

L.T.'s Theory of Pets is a second standout. It's a story of marital difficulties, pet incompatibility, and the art of storytelling. It's quite good and much better than any description of the plot could ever do justice to. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll enjoy it.

Autopsy in Room 4 may be the most suspenseful story. It features a paralyzed man on an autopsy table and you don't have to be the most imaginative person in the world to see how frightening that prospect would be.

Reviewing a collection of short stories can be tricky because there are so many stories in the book and each one is its own experience. Three or four are truly outstanding, and most of the rest are still quite good and well worth reading. There were two or three that didn't grab me but the beauty of a short story is that you don't invest that much time so the weaker stories don't take much out of your enjoyment of the book. I'd recommend thins book to all fans of King or the short story format.

Good collection of short stories

Stephen King, one of the best pure storytellers of the past couple of decades, is not one to be restricted by a particular story length: he'll write short stories, novellas, short novels (such as the Different Seasons collection), long novels and epic series (the Dark Tower). Thus, he can appeal to the reader with almost any amount of time and can deliver.
Everything's Eventual, a collection of stories that King wrote in the 1990s, is designed for the reader who wants a good single-sitting work. King is an author who has had his quality peaks and valleys, but fortunately, these stories were written while he was at one of his peaks. As a result, most of these stories are good and a few are downright great.
Although King states the stories were chosen in random order, I noticed the weakest stories seemed to appear earliest. The very first story, "Autopsy Room 4," is not bad but is probably the weakest in the bunch; it is essentially a reworking of an old Alfred Hitchcock TV story and though given the King touch, is not very original. The next three stories, "The Man in the Black Suit," "All That You Love Will Be Carried Away" and "Thee Death of Jack Hamilton," are a bit better, but still not outstanding.
After that, the stories begin to get really good. I particularly enjoyed "The Road Virus Heads North," a take-off on the haunted picture story and "1408" where King explores another haunted hotel, this one with a single bad room unlike anything found in The Shining.
For King fans, this is a must read, but I would also recommend it to other readers, in particular those who enjoy short stories, which are a form of writing that is sadly on the wane. King shows that there is still a lot of good material left in short fiction.

Can't say no to this book

"No" is one of the best self-help books I've read in quite awhile. I would recommend the book to male friends if it weren't so obviously targeted to women.

Most people would consider me above-average assertive, but I found many ideas immensely helpful. For example, I believe many of us could relate to the challenge of saying no to friends. We've all participated in stale rituals and over the years I've said "yes" to invitations I later regretted.

Perhaps the best part of this book is the section on saying no to one's doctor or therapist (you could apply the same principles to saying no to one's coach or marketing mentor, too).

I would go even further and say, "Even if you've signed up for a multi-session program, insist on leaving as soon as you stop gaining benefits."

The book's general approach is stronger than particular suggestions. Indeed, some specific suggestions seem questionable. For instance, we get a brilliant section on dealing with parents who are narcissistic or borderline. I like the idea to keep a list of standard responses nearby - but "I am sorry you feel this way" (p. 14) comes across as insulting even if you're not a narcissist.

At times, the author seems optimistic beyond what's realistic. I think readers will encounter more resistance than the book anticipates, especially when dealing with family. Sometimes people have to choose between maintaining a relationship -- even a barely civil one -- and maintaining one's sanity. At times, divorcing the family will be the most appropriate action.

The section on caregiving has some good points -- e.g., take time for yourself -- but I wonder why the care receiver's "no" options are not mentioned. And the difficulties of bringing a family together can be insurmountable. I read the section on saying no to "unavailable bros" (p. 229)to a male friend whose sisters reused to participate in their aging mother's care. My friend laughed aloud. The author urges the caregiver to ask siblings, "What are you willing to do?" His own sisters said, clearly and unambiguously, "Nothing." (When the mother died they talked through laywers.)

The section on saying no at work is very good; the author recognizes the monetary costs along with the intangible benefits. Her point about career-boosting opportunities that reduce our negotiating power (p. 83) deserves wider recognition. I especially agree with the point developed on pp. 86-87: women are expected to be kindly and nurturing. In my former life as a college professor, students frequently assumed I would understand their personal problems, such a child care. Ironically, some of the male professors were far more empathetic. I would add that business owners (especially women) can have trouble saying "no" to requests for free service.

As other reviewers have noted, it's reassuring to learn that strong, accomplished women can have difficulty saying "no" in certain situations. I suspect everyone - male and female - does.

Ultimately, I'd like to explore the book's premise even further: Sometimes, no matter how we try, we will not be liked. And sometimes the energy invested in trying to maintain a doomed relationship might be better spent elsewhere.

refreshing approach to tough problem

Like most of my female friends, I agonize when I have to refuse a request. Because I feel so guilty, I usually agree to do things that I don't want to do. At the same time, I resist one-size-fits-all JUST SAY NO solutions to my excessive compliance. What stands out about this book is that it is full of examples that fill in the middle ground between extreme acquiescence and absolutist NO's. There is no RIGHT WAY to say no. What a relief to find that the high-profile women interviewed by the author squirm and equivocate just as much as I do. I also love the gazillion examples of soft, relationship-sensitive NO's the author provides. This is a great book for anyone in search of nuanced solutions to social problems.

Immediately Applicable

As is typical of many women, saying no is something that I just cannot seem to do routinely. It has caused me more problems than my past problems with alcohol. Sober 22 years, I still have a tough time saying the simple word "no." Dr. Gartrell's book is practical and clear. That is what I need. I immediately put it into practice. I am a very fast reader and work in a tough business. The book works for me. I needed help in a fast and sure way. Yes, I appreciate the quotes from women that are very important in the world, yet I equally appreciate the examples from women who are working day-to-day to be stronger, more confident and better at what they do. This book is mandatory, and I rarely hand out compliments. I am a tough sell, and this book should not be. It should fly off the shelves to assist us all. Luther defined our god as that in which we place our trust. Given that theology in the broadest sense is language about god, this book is remarkably revealing theologically. The object of trust here, unequivocally and unapologetically, is technology, which, it is assumed, creates wealth without limit by a process revealingly labeled "economic alchemy." Pilzer, who was an economic adviser to presidents Reagan and Bush, has hit upon an apt alternative to Bush's early characterization of Reagonomics as "vodoo economics." The gospel propounded here is that there are no limits. Readers who are more biblically and historically informed than Pilzer will, no doubt, bring the prophetic tradition shared by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam to bear on his discussion of limits. The result should indeed be a more theologically informed perspective on recent economic and political developments, as well as, perhaps, a greater awareness of where those developments have ended in lead and where they have ended in gold. Informative!!!!

Wonderful book and he's a terrific speaker, humorous and serious at the same time. This book does NOT promote the "love" of money but it explains why you shouldn't feel guilty because you are prosperous. The Bible promotes prosperity as well as helping others. Plus, being rich doesn't just mean having a lot of money. this book talks about being rich in all aspects of life. It's the "love" of money that is evil just like the "love" of food is what makes us fat. Does that mean that food is bad? Get this book and read it....you'll gain new understanding of wealth.
Read this book, it will show you how being prosperous only benefits everything and everybody. It only makes sense. Poor people can't help poor people. Higher income areas of our country have the higher paid teachers and the best schools and the best SAT scores. That's only one example. Great book and besides that, Pilzer is a really great guy.

Outstanding but a slightly misleading title.

The title is a bit misleading, but it's one of the finest books on money you'll ever read. Some of the negative reviews on this book have evidently been from those who read the title but not the book. It does NOT teach or perpetuate the belief that everyone is supposed to be wealthy if they're a Christian.
What it DOES do is give the average person a GREAT explanation for why things are they way they are and why many economic changes are misunderstood simply because people don't look at a big enough picture. (For instance, a machine takes the place of three workers causing them to lose their jobs...bad news? No, because when those 3 workers find new jobs, the GNP goes up. A simplistic summary of one of Pilzer's examples, but you've really got to read it to appreciate it.)
Also, he gives EXCELLENT suggestions for everything from our school system to transporation to healthcare to communications, etc.
An absolute WONDERFUL book about how our physical resources are truly UNLIMITED and that the only "lack" we have is the lack of appropriation.

Excellent!

The book basically takes you through the history of the US economy and economic thinking at various stages through our history. Mr. Pilzer points out that consumers never become satisfied as was predicted in the 30's and 40's. Advancing technology always stays one step ahead of man and provides him with new and improved products which may be considered a luxury at first but will quickly become a necessity in our ever changing society. He also points out very effectively that technology is changing our society at an ever increasing rate. This is forcing us to abandon the practice of working for the same company for an entire lifetime. Changes in technology are constantly creating new industries which forces us to acquire new skills to remain employed.
