SANG, BABY. SANG.

HERE she comes!” Bessie Morgan squealed over her shoulder, excitement ringing in her voice. “It’s Little Bertha!”

Bessie held her breath along with the rest of Ebenezer Southern Baptist’s congregation as a white-smocked usher pushed a wheelchair slowly down the center aisle between several uneven rows of rickety folding chairs. It was hot and crowded under the small revival tent, and some of the younger members had been forced to drag their chairs out onto the perimeter grass and expose themselves to the blazing Alabama sun.

Bessie sat with her knees pressed together in a makeshift second-row pew. She and her sixty-eight-year-old sister Nett had been organizing the church’s annual visiting choir event for the past thirty years, and after an entire weekend spent in fellowship with nearly a hundred saints who had traveled from the surrounding bottom communities, her spirit and faith were nourished and restored.

Sweat trickled down Bessie’s back and between her large breasts as she worked to stir up a breeze with a funeral parlor fan. For the past two days Ebenezer’s congregation had been entertained by several organists and countless visiting preachers and singers, many of whom had garnered a small bit of fame for their foot-stomping, down-home gospel performances.

But according to the strange woman who had telephoned Bessie requesting wired money to bring her singer all the way from New York City, there was a singing saint making her way around the church circuit who could knock grown men to their knees and flood churchgoing eyes with righteous tears. The woman had insisted that her singer be scheduled to appear last on their program and had promised she would give them a gospel show that was worth paying and waiting for.

“I gotta pee,” Bessie leaned over and whispered to her younger sister. The air was abuzz with anticipation and the congregation was unusually chatty. The influx of outsiders in these low country bottomlands was always a cause for excitement.

Nett frowned and angled her head. “What in the heck you reckon they got under that blanket?” She pointed toward the aisle, her eyes never leaving the strange entourage that had just made its way down to the pulpit. “What in God’s world is that?”

Bessie craned her neck and stared at the wheelchair. A small form had been shrouded in the most beautiful hand-spun yellow blanket she’d ever seen. It looked like just a lump of something fleshy was underneath. Nothing was visible except a small pair of sock-covered feet, and in the blistering heat of the tent Bessie could have sworn those jokers were turned around backward.

Ignoring her bladder, Bessie watched closely as Pastor and Mother Williamson welcomed the group to the pulpit with broad smiles and open arms. Hank Brown took his fingers off the organ keys, and that high-yella Mabel Dinkins had the nerve to pirouette in her green whorehouse skirt as she handed the woman from New York a staticky microphone and grinned.

“Little Bertha thanks you,” was all the handsome woman said before passing the microphone right back to Mabel. She stood behind the wheelchair calmly for a few moments, her eyes raking over the expectant congregation. She was cream colored with a mass of silver hair that had been hard pressed and hung around her shoulders. She had the air of a woman who had once been very beautiful and had grown accustomed to eager, appreciative eyes.

“Well,” she finally said, “I s’pose y’all been waitin’ long enough.” She gave them a small smile, and then without another word she reached down and snatched the yellow blanket off the wheelchair and exposed a sight so horrific that all hell broke loose in the house of the Lord.

A woman screamed down front and Bessie Morgan started peeing right where she sat.

“Goddamn!” Pastor Williamson jumped back hollering, and Mother Williamson passed plum out.

“It’s a demon!” Nett yelled, finger-pointing. “Them New York fools done dragged a goddamn demon up in here!”

Mabel Dinkins was on the move. Her fat arms flailed in the air in front of her as her thighs jiggled and her green skirt rose. She reached across Mother Williamson and grabbed a jug of holy water and started slinging it in every direction.

Hank Brown had never been what you would call a strong man, and it wasn’t surprising when he leaned over his organ bench and threw up his dinner.

Chaos had come down on Ebenezer Baptist. A few bold boys ran outside to find sticks, while many of the younger children who had been sitting out on folding chairs were now crying and fleeing across the field, further down into the valley.

Bessie sat paralyzed as the woman from New York stood calmly behind the abomination, drenched in holy water as she held one hand high in the air. Folks were knocking over chairs as they rushed toward the back of the tent, and then the most incredible sound pierced the air, freezing every one of them in their tracks.

“A-a-a-mazing grace … how sweet the sound. Th-a-aat saved a wretch like meeee …”

It was a siren so sweet, so pure, that Bessie, like the others, was stricken deep in the pit of her soul. Nett gasped and went stiff beside her, and Bessie wanted to fling herself to the ground and weep at the beauty that was falling from the mouth of what she could now clearly see was a very young girl, just past a toddler really, of no more than three or four.

“I once was lost but now I’m found. Was blind, but now I seeeeee …”

The child’s head was huge and misshapen and positioned at the wrong angle on her narrow shoulders. Her right eye was missing and most of her facial skin looked raw and painful. She sang from a mouth whose upper jaw lay exposed in part, and her nose was a mere two slits that sat flat on her face.

Bessie was riveted, under a spell. The deformed little girl was like a pied piper. She spread her horrible lips and rang out with a voice that was holy and undeniable. She seduced them with her painful, enchanting song, and the congregation was held captive by her charms, forced to return to their seats as she baptized them in a spellbinding rendition of an old gospel tune that on this day had been reborn.

“Sang, baby!” Someone called out from the back of the tent. “Sang!”

Bessie could only stare. Little Bertha’s twisted body had been clothed in all yellow. Her upper torso leaned left as her hips seemed to shift way right. Her feet were not turned backward as Bessie had first thought, but neither were they oriented for forward movement. Not that the child could have dragged her monstrous form anywhere without that wheelchair, Bessie knew. Her stumpy legs looked like they’d stopped developing early in the embryo stage and her neck seemed too frail to support the weight of her oversized head as it lolled toward her left shoulder, her chin touching her chest.

“That poor baby is beautiful,” Nett whispered, her loving words coming in direct opposition to the disgust and repulsion that clearly showed on her face. Bessie turned to her sister and nodded. The entire congregation was similarly stricken. Their eyes may have been bulging with disgust and revulsion, but their hearts … their hearts and souls had surely been won.

The Purple Room

Twenty-three year old Bertha Sampson is severely disfigured. Born crippled and deformed, an effect of Gulf War syndrome. Bertha may not have been blessed with looks but she sure was blessed with a beautiful, soulful, voice. A voice that will hold listeners captivated.

One thing I want to share with you all...I don't eat Chinese food for a reason (laughing), although I realize that things like this happen anywhere. You got to read the book to find out what I am talking about. I read this book in a day and a half...so if you are looking for a quick and original story...this is your read!

I love everything Tracy Price-Thompson writes! Mrs. Price-Thompson touched on so many "in the closet" topics in this book, such as racism, sexuality, hate & phone sex operators. I like the fact that she said things in this book, wheather true or fabricated, that so many of us think about everyday but don't necessarily speak about. I love how her books make you think and then give you the unexpected. Great job Mrs. Price-Thompson...keep em coming and I'll keep a reading!

To me Bliss, nee' Bertha Jean Sampson was is an incredible person. Sure she was a phone sex operator but her physical disabilities didn't stop her from doing what she had to do to take care of herself. Her "clients" oh my goodness...I was very fond of Chinese food, now uh I don't know...

Quilting transcends time and social class

During the off season, Sylvia Bergstrom Compson and some of her Elm Creek quilt camp staffers find a small stack of letters stuck in the locked drawer of an old desk. The letters date to the late 1800s and appear to be related to the story brought forth in "The Runaway Quilt," which revealed that a slave named Joanna was once harbored at the Bergstrom estate, just before the Civil War erupted. Sylvia would love to investigate the history behind the letters, but she feels that she's not a good enough researcher. And Summer Sullivan isn't around to help with the project. She's off in Chicago, going to grad school.

In the meantime, we readers are magically transported to 1859, and the day when Joanna is recaptured by slavers and is marched back on foot from Pennsylvania to Virginia. From that point on, the stage is all hers. What we learned in the previous book was merely a vignette, a tiny portion of Joanna's life story. Here, we're exposed to it all. We follow her back to the plantation she came from. We find out how and why Joanna began to quilt herself. We experience her days, both before and after her journey to central Pennsylvania. It's easy for us to like Joanna and champion her cause; and it's easy to want only good things to happen to her. But here it is her fate to be a slave in Virginia and then later, in South Carolina. Imagine facing such difficult times that you can find comfort only in a colleague's basic advice to just "Keep breathin'." Yikes.

As with any slave narrative, even a fictitious one, some of the scenes are heart-breaking at the very least and utterly reprehensible at the most. And yet, we need to be reminded of that part of our American past. We also need to make an international jump and acknowledge that somewhere else on the planet right now, other folks (both men and women) are being treated as inhumanely as African Americans were in the Confederate South in the mid-1800s. It's an unfortunate fact that cannot help but crop up in the back of the readers' minds, while their fingers continue to turn these pages.

Will Summer Sullivan be able to present Sylvia with ANY of Joanna's history merely through official documentation? Or will we readers now know more than Sylvia and the Elm Creek characters themselves ever will? That possibility in and of itself makes for an interesting dilemma.

Fans may want to back up and first re-read "The Runaway Quilt" so that the details are fresh in their minds for this continuation of the story. And yet, "The Lost Quilter" is a powerful, stand-alone read in its own right. Ms. Chiaverini has woven a fabric of historical fiction that is as compelling as any offered to us by veteran storyteller John Jakes.

To diehard readers who may yearn for an Elm Creek book that concentrates on the familiar, contemporary characters; and to those who may ask, "What does history have to do with quilts, anyway?" one can only say, Read the book. Read the book, and you will know why this story is an important one.

Compelling slave narrative point of view.

I've read the Elm Creek books and, with few exceptions, I've liked them all. The Lost Quilter picks up the story of Joanna, the runaway slave from The Runaway Quilt. As with the other Elm Creek books, this one begins with Sylvia discovering a new fact about her family or their quilting. While the beginning and end of the book are about Sylvia trying to find out information about Joanna, the book itself is, Joanna's story.

After her son was born at the Bergstrom farm, Joanna was recaptured and returned to her master in Virginia. She took with her a desire to find her son, her newly found ability to read and her mastery with the needle. Her master sells her to his brother in South Carolina and Joanna begins a new life, finding friends and love. Joanna dreams of returning to Elm Creek and she pieces a quilt, reminiscent of the underground railroad quilts. In it she sews the landmarks she remembers, in hopes that someday it will guide her back to Elm Creek.

Joanna's strength sees her through difficulties with selfish mistresses and the Civil War, and the legacy she leaves behind will finally answer some of Sylvia's questions.

I was prepared to not like this book. I think that, at some point, a story needs to end. While I do think Jennifer Chiaverini runs the risk of weakening a strong story if she insists on giving every possible character their own book, I enjoyed this one. Slave narratives have always fascinated me, and reading the story from Joanna's viewpoint was compelling.

Welcome Back!

Whew- thank goodness Jennifer Chiaverini is back! I agree that this is one of her better books in a few years. "The Quilter's Kitchen" was a complete waste of time, paper and money. But a true story and set of characters is developed for this book. It's still a little short for my tastes, but definitely more than a novella. I miss the original Elm Creek Quilters but I understand that their stories may be done. I would even welcome new stories about the new hires, as long as they were of the same quality as the first books. I think fans of the series will be pleased by this latest in the series.

Great read!

This was a fantastic novel. I love that it had a strong plot in addition to passionate romance. To many times I have read a paranormal romance and found the plot line absolutely laughable, corny and not worth reading. This series of books is excellent (all of them)! Most of the books I have read in the paranormal genre have been vampire romances, these were such a refreshing change for me. I highly recommend all The Daughters of the Glen books.

Lovely new Highland paranormal series

Sara Douglas a romance novelist come to Scotland hoping to overcome her writer's block and come to terms with her special ability to sense the emotions of everyone she touches.

Ian McCullough is a half-mortal Fae and a Guardian for more then six hundred years.

When Ian meets Sara, he can literally "see her soul" looking out at him.

The romance and sensual undertones kept this romance story snapping. Loved the interaction with the other Faeries and Ian's well meaning friends and relatives.

Future novels with Dallyn and Ramos are promising and will be on my auto-buy list. Thanks Melissa Mayhue for writing a lovely book. When I finished it today, I thought "can't wait for the next one".

DAY 1

In the Beginning

Read Genesis 1, 2:1-3

"God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good" (v. 1:31).

Sack races, wheelbarrow races, and high kicks rather than football and basketball. Suspenders and shaving mugs rather than championship rings. In thebeginning that was athletics at the University of Tennessee.

The driving force behind the fi rst athletic contests at UT was a pair of professors. According to Russ Bebb in The Big Orange, in the late 1880s Charles Plumb and Charles Summers organized the first intramural field days atTennessee. In January 1889 the events included "a potato race, sack race, fifty-yard dash, high kick contest, and standing long jump" plus a wheelbarrow race. The last event was the highlight of the day because there were several wrecks, some precipitated by Professor Summers himself, who insisted on racing.

In the spring of that same year, Bebb said, Professor Plumb was at it again, organizing a fi eld day that included prizes for the winners. The athlete with the greatest number of points for the day won a silver shaving mug and a silver-handled brush.

Other prizes included a gold-headed cane, a pair of suspenders (satin, no less), a set of Charles Dickens's novels, and a straw hat.

In the beginning, this was the athletic program at the University of Tennessee.

Beginnings are important, but what we make of them -- what follows -- is even more important. Every morning, you get an important gift from God: a new beginning. The day lies before you expectant and pristine. You can use it to pay a debt,start a new relationship, replace a burned-out light bulb, tell your family you love them, chase a dream, solve a nagging problem, right old wrongs...or not.

God simply provides the gift. How you use it is up to you. People often talk wistfully about starting over or making a new beginning. God gives you the chance with the dawning of every new day.

The most important key to achieving great success is to decide upon your goal and launch, get started, take action, move.

Wonderful devotional!

My 84 yr old mother is in a nursing home and is one of the biggest Vol fans in the world! She can hardly see but listens to all their games on the radio. When I visit her I read to her and I was in search of a new book. We had just read "Heaven is for Real" and were in need of a new book and that's when I came across this UT devotional book. We love it! It starts out telling you an interesting story about a UT sports team or individual; then what follows is where it draws a brief parallel to real life and our relationship with Christ. Then there is a 1 line quote and a final thought to wrap things up. Each story is 2 pages long. If you like UT sports and love the Lord, you'll truly enjoy this book!

Wonderful gift for a Vol!

I found this little book by mistake but had to order it since my family's blood runs orange. It has daily devotions that incorporate wonderful stories from Tennessee sports. It's also easy to read and follow. One catch: if you give it as a gift, make sure the recipient would actually like a devotional book!

Just Plain Jesus

"....Anyone who has seen me, has seen the Father...." (John 14:9) What a precious gift that the Lord has given to Bruce - such deep insight into the life of Jesus and an even deeper look into Jesus' heart - ultimately a beautiful and precious gift to us. This book displays so many different ways of seeing the women in Jesus' times and how they were treated and may have felt. Bruce has been able to bring those women alive for us to understand their hearts in those days; but, he also has been able to relate those women with the present day woman. Even though this book is about the women in Jesus' life and their struggles and how much he so very much loved them - the sweetest most precious part of this book is that it allows us to have an even deeper understanding of Jesus himself, His heart and His love and it draws us so much closer to Jesus. This book needs to be read by women, men and young adults alike and should become a staple in everyone's library!

Compelling.

This book is one-hundred percent the author's conjecture. There is very little factual basis for most of his suppositions. And, yet, it is one of the most compelling books about Jesus I have ever read. It goes through the stories of the different encounters with women in the Bible that Jesus had. Such as the woman at the well. The stories are all well known. The book still has a high interest factor, however, because the author does an amazing job of bringing out and giving personalities to the women. The author seems to have an unusually remarkable insight into the psychology and needs of women and it makes for a very moving re-telling of the Gospel stories. It is an interesting and compelling read. For women especially, who are so often rarely the focus of Biblical teachings, this book is a balm for the soul.

His adviser suggests Benjamin for the job, a 10-year-old who exhibits symptoms of autism (he doesn't speak and feels no emotion, but is a gifted painter). Benjamin undertakes the king's commission and works on the painting in a barn, where he befriends Valerie, a talking pig who brings Benjamin out of his autistic shell. He wants to paint his porcine best friend into the scene, but fears he can't because pigs don't appear in the biblical story. The ending is the saddest thing since Old Yeller.(Nov.)

If you haven't read a Kinky Friedman book, you might as well tear up your library card and keep out of the bookmobile. This man is funny from the soles of his feet to the kinky bush atop his intelligent head.

I expected more..

Having lived in Texas when Kinky ran for Governor, I was expecting biting, raucous humor. But, sad to say, I was disappointed... Seemed like more of an effort to make a little money off his "fame" than a serious attempt at humor.. I read through the whole thing - but it was a struggle to keep from just tossing it in the throw away pile.. What a waste of time..

Read this book; it is the essence of Christmas. Bejamin, a ten year old artist, struggles to both paint a traditional Nativity and to explain to his friend Valerie, a pig, why she alone of all the animals in the family barn cannot be shown with the Baby Jesus. Benjamin learns about friendship and love, and we all learn that Love truly comes at Christmas. I smiled, I laughed, and I cried. This is a classic. Thank you, Mr. Friedman.

Mughal History

This is the story of the Mughal Emperor who built the Taj Mahal. An era of great beauty and culture, but also shows the brutal violence that exemplifies the Mughal culture. Many will die so that the Emporer can sit on his throne and retain his territories.
A daughter will be force that can keep him on the throne. She dedicates her whole life to her father after the Empress dies. But will she see her contributions honored?

Must Read!

This was the last of the 3 books spanning the 3 emperors of the Mughal Empire ending in the completion of the Taj Mahal. I was very sorry to see them all end. Indu Sundarean is not only a very talented storyteller, she has definitely endlessly researched the basis for all 3 novels. I have always
preferred to take my 'history lessons' via a story instead of a text book. Her books have been perfect for me!
