The Winding Ways Quilt (Elm Creek Quilts Series #12), by Jennifer Chiaverini

Jennifer Chiaverini's bestselling Elm Creek Quilts series continues with The Winding Ways Quilt, in which the arrival of newcomers into the circle of quilters heralds unexpected journeys down pathways near and far.

Quilters have flocked to Elm Creek Manor to learn from Master Quilter Sylvia Compson and her expert colleagues. There's Sarah, Sylvia's onetime apprentice who's paired her quilting accomplishments with a mind for running the business of Elm Creek Quilts; Agnes, who has a gift for appliqué; Gwen, who stitches innovative art quilts; Diane, a whiz at the technicalities of quick-piecing; and Bonnie, with her encyclopedic knowledge of folk art patterns. But with Judy and Summer, two other founding members of the Elm Creek Quilters, departing to pursue other opportunities, will the new teachers be able to fill in the gaps created by the loss of their expertise—and more important, their friendship?

"When I think of all the different paths I could have followed in my life, all the twists and turns that could have led me anywhere," muses incoming teacher Gretchen, "it's something of a miracle that I ended up here, surrounded by loving friends."

But what of friends departed? As Sylvia contemplates a tribute to the partnership of the Elm Creek Quilters, she is reminded of a traditional quilt pattern whose curved pieces symbolize a journey. Winding Ways, a mosaic of overlapping circles and intertwining curves, would capture the spirit of their friendship at the moment of its transformation.

Will Sylvia's choice inspire the founding members to remember that each is a unique part of a magnificent whole? Will the newcomers find ways to contribute, and to earn their place? The Winding Ways Quilt considers the complicated, often hidden meanings of presence and absence, and what change can mean for those who have come to rely upon one another.

From Publishers Weekly
Pieced together more like a quilt than a driving narrative, Chiaverini's 13th novel centered around the quilting circle of Elm Creek, Pa., finds change afoot. Chapters center on the circle's various members, with a focus on backstory. First-time readers are thus not left out in the cold as Judy and her husband, Steve, prepare to leave for new jobs and lives in Philadelphia; Summer begins grad school in Chicago while boyfriend Jeremy's graduate work keeps him near Elm Creek Manor; Sarah discovers she's expecting twins; Bonnie isn't sure she wants to reinvent the quilt shop destroyed by vandals; and newcomers Gretchen Hartley and Anna Del Maso join the staff of the quilting camp. The section dealing with Gwen's detective work aimed at discovering the creator of a quilt rescued from a church basement lost and found is the most powerful and poignant in Chiaverini's latest patchwork confection. Sylvia

Sylvia woke to a gentle breeze and birdsong beyond the open window. Sitting up in bed and stretching, she saw clouds in the eastern sky, pink with the new light of dawn. Andrew had risen earlier, without waking her, but she knew there was only one place her husband could be at that hour on a Sunday morning.

She dressed in a light sweater and slacks and went to join her husband, pausing at the top of the grand oak staircase to savor the brief, reverential stillness that descended upon Elm Creek Manor on Sunday mornings. In a few hours, the gray stone artists' retreat would bustle and hum with the sounds of dozens of eager quilters arriving for a week of quilting, friendship, and fun, but for the moment, Sylvia, Andrew, and the manor's other three permanent residents had the estate all to themselves.

After descending the staircase, grasping a banister worn smooth from the hands of generations, Sylvia crossed the black marble floor of the front foyer and turned to walk down the older west wing of the manor, built by her great-grandfather in 1858. She brushed the wall lightly with her fingertips, wondering what her great-grandparents would think of the changes their descendants had brought to the farm they had founded, nestled in the fertile Elm Creek Valley in central Pennsylvania.

Voices and the smell of frying sausages drifted to her from the kitchen at the end of the hall. Sarah would be at the stove, no doubt, preparing breakfast for five, but who kept her company? Her husband, Matt, most likely, although usually he was too busy with his caretaker's duties to linger in the kitchen. Perhaps Sarah's best friend and fellow Elm Creek Quilter, Summer, had finished her daily yoga routine early and had decided to lend a hand, taking advantage of the opportunity to contribute more vegetarian options to the meal.

"Good morning," Sylvia sang out as she entered the kitchen, but she stopped short at the sight of Sarah sitting on a bench and resting her head in her arms on the kitchen table. Her husband tended the stove, a pink calico apron tied around his waist.

"Morning," Matt said, throwing her a grin over his shoulder and raising a spatula in salute. Sarah managed to lift her head long enough to give Sylvia a pale smile. Then she groaned and let her head drop onto her arms again, her long, reddish-?brown ponytail falling onto an open package of saltine crackers beside her on the table.

"Goodness, Sarah. Are you ill?" Sylvia sat down on the opposite bench, brushed Sarah's ponytail away from the food, and felt her forehead. Sylvia detected no trace of fever, thank goodness, but the younger woman clearly was not well.

"I'll be all right." Sarah's voice wavered feebly, belying her words. "I think I finally understand why Summer won't eat meat. I never realized how awful it smells."

Sylvia thought breakfast smelled delicious, but she knew better than to discuss food with someone suffering from a stomach bug. "Perhaps you should go back to bed, dear. Matthew seems to have everything well in hand, and you wouldn't want to pass on whatever you have to our guests during registration."

At the stove, Matt choked back a laugh. "I don't think we have to worry about any of them taking home this particular souvenir."

"We can't be too careful."

"I'll be all right in a moment." Sarah pushed herself to her feet.

"It's my turn to fix breakfast and I'm not going to shirk my duty."

"Shirk away, honey," said Matt. "I have everything under control."

"Beginning today, we'll have a professional chef on staff again," Sylvia reminded her. " Anna's planning a cold buffet for lunch, but supper will be a gourmet feast. She phoned me with the menu. Mushroom and rosemary soup, salmon filets, an eggplant ratatouille that Summer is sure to love, and chocolate mousse for dessert. Best of all, no more kitchen duty for the rest of us!"

"I can't wait," Sarah croaked, then pressed her lips together and hurried from the room.

"She'll be fine," said Matt when Sylvia rose to go after her.

"Don't worry. Just give her a minute, and she'll be back here scrambling eggs."

Sylvia wasn't so sure, but she put on a pot of coffee and offered to mix up a batch of biscuits. Just as she was about to dust her hands with flour to knead the dough, Sarah returned, looking remarkably better. She insisted on taking over, and when the younger couple overruled Sylvia's protests, she left them to their work. She filled two travel mugs with coffee -- cream and sugar for her, sugar only for Andrew -- and carried them out the back door and down four steps to the rear parking lot.

Outside the air was cool from the night and misty, dew fresh on the grass. Insects chirped and buzzed and darted in the sunlight shafting through the forest canopy, the elms barely stirring in the still air. Sylvia knew the day ahead would be warm and humid, but the gray stone walls of Elm Creek Manor would keep their arriving guests cool and comfortable -- as long as she reminded Sarah to open all the windows and keep plenty of lemonade on ice.

With a mug in each hand, Sylvia crossed the bridge over Elm Creek without spilling a single drop. Andrew's favorite fishing spot, a large, round, flat rock on the creek bank beneath a willow tree, had been her favorite secluded hideaway as a child. Whenever she had needed time alone to think or to cool her temper after an argument with her sister, she had stolen away to the willow and the rock. The musical burbling of the creek never failed to soothe her, and sometimes even now, a woman grown, she favored the private spot for quiet contemplation.

But she was happy to share it with her dear Andrew.

She knew better than to scare away the fish by calling out to him when she spied him through the willow branches, that faded, worn fishing cap on his head, a tackle box on the rock by his side. She approached quietly, but her footfalls alerted him when she was still several yards away. He glanced over his shoulder, and his face lit up at the sight of her. "There's my girl," he said, his voice low. Shifting his fishing rod to one hand, he patted the rock beside him.

Sylvia gladly took the offered seat, handed him his coffee, and rested her head upon his shoulder as he drew her closer. "Anything biting?"

"No keepers. Not like you." He sipped his coffee and nodded to show it was just the way he liked it. " You're definitely a keeper."

"I'm glad to know you don't plan to throw me back."

"Not on your life."

She smiled, and they sat in companionable silence, watching minnows draw close to the hook and dart away into the shadows. "Sarah and Matt have breakfast cooking," Sylvia remarked. "Sarah seems to be under the weather."

Andrew grinned. "She's not sick. She's just sick of cooking."

"No, that's not it. I urged her to return to bed, but she flatly refused." Sarah wasn't a shirker. If anything, she worked herself too hard. "But I think we'll all be happy when Anna Del Maso joins our staff today. We've been without a real chef for too long."

"If those cookies she brought to her job interview are any indication, she's going to be a great addition to the staff."

"I couldn't agree more. If she can make a simple sugar cookie taste that delicious, I can't wait to see what she'll do for Judy's going-away party." Sylvia sighed and sipped her coffee. "I only wish it weren't necessary."

"Judy couldn't turn down such a great offer from an Ivy League school."

"Of course not. I wouldn't expect her to. But I'll miss her very much."

"That's only natural. She'll miss you Elm Creek Quilters, too."

"She's one of our founding members," said Sylvia, steadying a quaver in her voice. "It's difficult to believe this is her last week." The Elm Creek Quilters were fortunate that one of their new hires, Gretchen Hartley, was willing to start right away. Although Gretchen and Judy had very different quilting styles, adjusting the course offerings was a minor inconvenience compared to the upheaval of canceling classes altogether. At least the rest of their staff would remain through the rest of the season, but then..."We won't have Summer for much longer, either."

"I thought she was staying through the end of September."

"That's what she says now, but I'm sure once camp wraps up for the season, she'll be eager to move to Chicago before the fall quarter begins."

"What about her boyfriend? Won't she want to stick around Waterford for him?"

"I'm not so sure about that. She's more likely to delay her departure for her mother than for Jeremy."

Andrew chuckled. "Gwen's so proud of her, I wouldn't be surprised if she drove Summer to Chicago and walked her to class on the first day."

Sylvia smiled at the image of Gwen in a brightly colored gypsy skirt and beaded necklaces escorting her red-faced, twenty-eight-year-old daughter to her first graduate school symposium. "Gwen might do exactly that, if she didn't have her own students to worry about. And if Summer wouldn't faint away from embarrassment."

"Summer doesn't seem the fainting type."

"No, I suppose you're right." It was far more likely that the spirited young woman would welcome her mother's companionship. Gwen and Summer were very close, and Sylvia was so happy for them both, so proud of Summer's accomplishments and her prospects, that Sylvia could almost forget to regret her leaving them.

Almost.

Andrew finished his coffee, drew in his fishing line, and began packing his gear. "Do you think you'll finish your quilt in time?" he asked.

"Unfortunately, no. The grand unveiling I had planned for Judy's going-away party will have to wait."

"Think of it this way." Andrew squeezed her hand in sympathy and helped her to her feet. "Now we'll have an excuse to visit Judy in Philadelphia. A quilt that special ought to be delivered in person."

Sylvia nodded, but the thought of a future visit was small consolation. She had worked on the quilts all summer in secret, tracing the templates on the back of her favorite fabrics, carefully cutting the pieces, pinning and sewing each curve by hand.

Winding Ways. The pattern's name was as evocative as the design was love...

Reliable Elm Creek Quilts novel
By Rushmore
This was my very first Kindle book, and it did not disappoint.

What I love about the Elm Creek Quilts books - I know exactly what I'm going to get. The writing style is easy-going, descriptive but not too descriptive. I know the characters. They will have some turmoil, but there is usually a happy ending. They are indeed like a quilt, with each chapter told from a different character's point of view. They all care deeply about quilting and each other. And I usually cry a little bit toward the end. I love being immersed in this world for a day or two.

And reading it on a Kindle was way cool!

This book I found to be a rewrite from all the previous books. If you hadn't read the previous books it would be better.

Ships of the Line (Star Trek)From Brand: Pocket Books/Star Trek

They dared to risk it all in a skiff of reeds or leather, on a ship of wood or steel, knowing the only thing between them and certain death was their ship. To explore, to seek out what lay beyond the close and comfortable, every explorer had to embrace danger. And as they did so, what arose was a mystical bond, a passion for the ships that carried them. From the very first time humans dared to warp the fabric of space, escaping from the ashes of the third World War, they also created ships. These vessels have become the icons of mankind's desire to rise above the everyday, to seek out and make the unknown known. And these ships that travel the stellar seas have stirred the same passions as the ones that floated in the oceans.

While every captain has wished that their starship could be outfitted in the same manner as the sailing ship H.M.S. Beagle -- without weapons -- that proved untenable. From the start, Starfleet realized that each vessel, due to the limited range of the early warp engines, must be able to stand alone against any attack. Thus arose the idea, taken from the days of wooden sailing ships, that every Starfleet vessel must stand as a ship of the line. Through the actions of their captains and crews, countless starships have taken on that role. Here we remember some of those ships and their heroic crews.

In celebration of the fortieth anniversary of Star Trek, here for the very first time collected together are the spectacular images from the highly successful and acclaimed Star Trek: Ships of the Line calendars. Gloriously rendered, each of these illustrations was created exclusively for Pocket Books. With text by Michael Okuda (The Star Trek Encyclopedia), the story of each of these valiant starships comes to life.

All of the material in this book is contained in the later volume with the red-striped cover. I'm not sure why this is still in print, but it's still a concise companion to the expanded volume.

Great pictures, lots of wasted space
By Peter R. Gibbons
This book is fun- great coffee table book, if you're a geek and want guests to know it. A lot of the images are computer generated art, not from the series, which takes away some of the interest. There's also a picture on each page, then the opposing page is a paragraph of text (lots of wasted paper space). Anyway, fun book - worth the $12 or so, if you're a fan of Star Trek.

Beautiful book--but know what you're getting.
By Paul Seaman
This is a beautiful, imagination-stimulating, sometimes breathtaking book. But potential buyers should know three things: 1. This book is about half the size of the average coffee table book (FYI, in case you don't read the fine print or easily "get" measurements in the ), so they are not big pictures. 2. This is an *art* book; these are "illustrations," not photographic reproductions from the Star Trek T.V. series(s) or movies. I wasn't familiar with the "Ships of the Line" calendars, so was expecting "real" photos of the Star Trek ships, not paintings. However, some of the pictures are computer-design artwork that very effectively look like photographs. I know it's a matter of taste, by I find these more enjoyable, more evocative.
3. While ships from all five of the T.V. shows are included (not the animated ST), there is of course a favored emphasis on the Enterprise in its various/successive generations. There are only 37 illustrations, so that doesn't leave room for a whole lot else. (Opposing/even-numbered pages are blank, except for a short paragraph of text by official Star Trek history guru Michael Ocuda, which offers interesting commentary, though more impressionistic thatn encyclopedic.) Also, the book's cover illustration is not repeated in the book, so if you get a torn or badly smudged copy, you're out of luck. I was also disappointed that a book called "Ships of the Line" didn't have a single schematic drawing or even a comparative illustration to scale of the various ships (like is sort of done on the cover picture).
Even given all these qualifications, there are at least 10 pictures in this book that really inspire me and excite my imagination; and any two of them, for me, are worth the price of the book.

CHAPTER 1

"Please hang on, sir. We'll have someone out there as soon as we've reestablished power in that region." Shira, a senior technician for the Risan Operations Unit, pulled her earpiece away as the sharp squawk emanating from it became too much for her sensitive ears. She quickly lowered the volume and made another attempt. "I am sorry for the inconvenience, sir, but -- " She was cut off by an even louder tirade of expletives that would have made even a Nausicaan blush. "Please try to be patient, we -- " The signal suddenly stopped. Shira wasn't sure if it was the guest's doing or another fault in the system. She hoped for the latter as the guest and two of his companions were hanging from the side of Catona Bluff, a popular rock-climbing formation on Risa. Their antigravity belts had been rendered useless as their power, along with all energy circulating in the region, had mysteriously vanished. The drain was so intense that Shira couldn't even get one of Operations' flyers in the air to rescue the three.

Shira tapped in a request from her keypad for a ground team to make their way on foot to the bluff. Unfortunately, it would take at least an hour to get there. She sighed and looked around the circular control room at her fellow technicians, their faces looking as tired and frustrated as her own. Their consoles were all lit up a bright red, indicating technical problems throughout the Monagas Peninsula, one of the most popular regions on the planet.

"I realize it's not supposed to rain, ma'am, but I'm afraid it's out of our control at the moment," she heard Milan, who was sitting next to her, say a little too wearily for her liking. Despite the troubles they were facing, it was important they maintain a positive attitude. Risa was the number-one destination resort planet in the Alpha Quadrant. It got that reputation because of its constant, stable climate, its attractive landscapes, and most of all, its very friendly staff.

But at the moment, the first two attributes were being threatened. The weather control system appeared to be breaking down. As a result, several popular areas in the region were literally being washed away by developing, heavy storms. Shira turned back to her own console and groaned as she watched another five complaint calls line up in the queue of forty on her viewscreen. She closed her eyes and thought about how nice it would be to sit out on the white sands of Monagas Lagoon. The only problem was that most of the beach had been wrecked by a freak rainsquall that ripped through the area earlier that day. This had been the third power loss in as many days.

The swishing of the doors to the control area and the shrill voice of Tonais, director of the Monagas Lagoon resort, drew her from her thoughts. Shira said a quiet prayer, asking for strength to get through the moments to come.

"And I'm still waiting for an explanation for all this." Tonais was speaking to his assistant, a mousy little individual with his nose buried in a large data pad. He stopped short, his assistant nearly colliding with him. "Technician Shira, correct?"

Shira turned around in her seat to face the two, not attempting to rise. "Senior Technician, yes," she responded, making every effort to keep her tone even. The director had been a general pain in the neck since the crisis had begun. Granted, a great many of the complaints from the guests had fallen on his plate, but his hourly visits to the Operations Unit just seemed to add to their problems.

"Have you come to any conclusions, Senior Technician?" His tone dripped with sarcasm as he uttered Shira's title. He was decked out in a long flowing robe that didn't cover enough of his girth for Shira's satisfaction. He wore no shoes, and he tracked sand into the room. It was clear that the director had no respect or concern for anyone but himself.

"None, sir." Shira hated admitting it. She rose from her chair and gestured toward a map of the southern hemisphere projected on a large viewscreen overhead. Pulsing maroon indicators winked on and off in one particular area. "All we have so far is that this wave of freak -- " She held up a hand to halt the oncoming protest she saw brewing in the director's eyes. "I'm categorizing them as 'freak,' since I can offer no cause for these problems -- freak power outages that began in the Monagas Peninsula and are now spreading to other resorts in the region."

"There is no such thing as a freak occurrence, Senior Technician," Tonais responded. "At least, not when it comes to a magnificent system such as ours. There are fail-safes, backup systems. Why are they not engaged?"

"They have been, Director, and in some cases they are working normally."

"In some cases?" he repeated slowly.

"Whatever is affecting our systems is affecting them too."

"But those are independent arrangements, Senior Technician. You cannot tell me this is a freak occurrence too?"

"I really don't know what to tell you, sir," Shira replied, wincing as she brought her shoulders up in a shrug. She didn't like appearing so incompetent, especially in front of Tonais, but the answers were eluding her.

"Excuse me, Director," the assistant squeaked, not looking up from his notepad. He had a deep nasal tonality to his voice. "But we're getting a report from the resort. There are three rock climbers trapped on the side of the bluff."

Shira winced again. She was hoping to deal with this situation on her own.

"Well," Tonais snapped, "take care of it."

"I'm afraid it's not that simple, sir." The assistant looked up for a brief moment. Although his head was completely bald, he sported a thick mustache that curled on the ends. Shira thought the two were an odd pair. If the situation wasn't so desperate at the moment, she might have almost allowed herself to laugh aloud.

"You see, the transporters have no power to their systems and we can't seem to get our flyers off the ground. The climbers were equipped with antigravity belts, but they won't function."

Tonais's eyes flashed with anger. "You call this a freak occurrence too? I want more than a pat answer to all this!" He tapped his assistant on the shoulder. "Have a rescue team organized to ascend the bluff and get those people down!"

"I already -- " Shira started to explain, but was cut off.

Tonais whirled toward Milan. "You! Contact Starfleet Command!"

Shira followed the director. "Starfleet Command? Don't you mean the nearest Federation representative, sir? Ambassador Li -- "

"No, I want Starfleet Command. They're the only ones who can handle this situation now."

"The only ones?" Shira's voice began to rise in anger. "With all due respect, Director -- "

"No," he cut her off, "don't say another word." He leaned over to Milan. "When you have Starfleet, get me Captain Montgomery Scott of the S.C.E. division." "S.C.E.?" Shira was confused.

"Starfleet Corps of Engineers," Tonais explained, nodding his head and adding with a note of hopeful confidence. "They'll get to the bottom of this."

"But sir -- " Shira tried desperately to regain control of the situation.

Tonais turned to face her. His facial expression had changed, softened somewhat. "Please understand. We cannot afford to have this kind of interruption in services for any lengthy period of time. At the moment, we are preparing to receive a group of scientists from throughout the Federation for a symposium. Some of the guests are already here. If word gets out that we are not capable of accommodating their desires..."

He didn't need to finish the sentence. Every person in the room, indeed, every Risan knew of the importance of total guest satisfaction.

"I have Starfleet, Director," Milan called out. "Captain Scott is waiting for you."

Suddenly, the lights in the room dimmed. Monitors began to wink out one by one around them. The large overhead viewscreen faded to black.

"This is intolerable," Tonais muttered. Aloud, he said, "Captain Scott, this is Director Tonais of the Monagas Peninsula on Risa."

The only response was static that faded away as the lights in the room continued to ebb.

"Get them back!" Tonais barked.

"I can't, sir." Milan moaned as he tried to comply with the order. "We're losing power to our systems."

Tonais turned his questioning gaze to Shira, who could only answer him with a confused stare.

"Now what are we going to do?" the assistant blurted out as the darkness engulfed them. Star Trek® S.C.E.: Paradise Interrupted copyright © 2004 by CBS Studios Inc. All rights reserved.

Disappointed with Creative Couplings Packaging
By Randy L. Bennett
I have really enjoyed reading the SCE series of books. For the most part I have considered the price to be fair. The two part series Creative Couplings was a real disappointment. They divided the story into two parts charging $5.99 per part. Each book was extremely short compared to other SCE books. Creative Couplings should have been packaged into one book for only $5.99 or less. It was certainly not worth $12.00 for the two.

The story was fine but not exceptional.

I did have a new idea for the whole Star Trek world. If you can have a hologram doctor (introduced in Voyager and used in the SCE series), why not a hologram engineer to deal with all the various life threatening situations in engineering and let the humanoids get out and seal off engineering?

Big disappointment - I've really enjoyed this series so far, but this book was a big misstep.

One dimensional Characters....Here I come!
By DeepThought
Just because it has Star Trek pasted on the cover does not mean we should be subjected to such a poor plot. Whoever green lighted this amateurish writing must love one dimensional characters. Even the the eSeries this book was based on was so bad it was killed in 2007. It really is a shame any of these books are still available to the general public. They should come with a warning "Hard Core Star Trek Fans only. Those with intelligence stay away!"

I tried several in this series, thinking it might just be the author's bad writing, but the few other\ books I found available at our meager library were just as bad. I am so tired of one dimensional characters and the inability of poor writers to craft believable female characters. There literally is no difference between men and women other than a name.

Practice to Deceive, by Ann Rule

From “America’s best true-crime writer” (Kirkus Reviews) Ann Rule comes the New York Times bestselling mystery novel of drama, greed, sex, scandal, and murder on an eerie island in the Pacific Northwest.

Nestled in Puget Sound and accessible only by ferry, Whidbey Island is a gem off the coast of Washington State where life is insular and the island’s year-round residents tend to know one another’s business. But when the blood-drenched body of Russel Douglas is discovered the day after Christmas in his SUV, the whole island is shocked. No one can imagine who among them could plot such a cold-blooded crime. And like a cast of characters from a mystery novel, a host of Whidbey residents fall under suspicion.

Brenna Douglas was Russel’s estranged and soon-to-be-ex wife, who allowed him to come home for a Christmas visit with their children. Brenna often complained to her good friend Peggy Sue that Russel was physically and emotionally abusive. Married three times, Peggy Sue’s own life has been one of extremes: hers is a rags-to-riches-and-back-again tale. But in 2003, her love affair with married guitarist Jim Huden led the two Whidbey Island natives to pursue their ultimate dreams of wealth and privilege—even at the expense of human life.

Unravel the tangled web woven by Russel Douglas’s murder in Practice to Deceive, the newest heart pounding true-crime tour de force from Ann Rule.

From Booklist
This is Rule’s twenty-fourth true-crime book in a successful sweep that started with her brilliant take on serial killer Ted Bundy, the man she worked next to at a Seattle crisis center. Rule’s true-crime books are notable for their in-depth forensics, perceptive trial coverage (often), and keen psychological insight (always). Her latest extends an analogy she has often used: how an investigation into homicide takes, basically, a stick drawing of a person, the victim, and with each piece of evidence and parts of interviews, transforms the stick figure into a rounded, complex human being whose life holds the key to his or her death. In 2003, a man’s body was discovered in a car parked in front of a cabin on Whidbey Island, Washington. The victim, Russel Douglas, had a single gunshot wound to his head. The investigation took years to complete (it took a decade to come to trial) and wound through seven states and Mexico. Rule is at her best in tracing Douglas’ frantic, depression-fueled changes in the years preceding his murder. This time Rule occasionally becomes tedious in her detailed coverage of every phase of the investigation and trial, using her remarkable access to sources to deliver, finally, too much information. Still, this account delivers quite a punch in its final revelations. --Connie Fletcher

Practice to Deceive
By Sandra
I love Ann Rule's books but this one was very hard for
me to get through. It seemed as though the same information
was repeated page after page after page. I was very
disappointed. Usually, Ann Rule's books keep me up at night.
Not this one. I had a hard time picking it up once I put it down.
I will return it for a refund $10.00 is too much to pay for a book
that is so boring. I skipped several chapters and didn't' miss a thing.

tedious
By booklover343
Ann Rule is an amazing author and I've loved most of her books. This one, however, was the story of a too complicated crime and investigation. To give her credit, she does warn readers several times that the investigation was very complicated, over many years, and covered many different states. The warning was not enough...she should have passed on this one for a book!

Because you have had to slog through so many pages and so many different suspects (and too much detail on non-suspects), it's tiresome and you start to not really care who did it.

If you are looking for a good true-crime book, pick one of her other ones.

So very disappointing
By ges
I waited so long for this book to come out as I am a major Ann Rule fan. What an absolute mess of a book it is . So much detail about all of these peripheral characters that leads the reader to no where but boredom. I hate to say it, but Ann has list her touch. One gets the impression that she had planned to write about this murder case and despite the fact that it turned out to be an unworthy case to warrant 400 pages, she wrote it anyway and just threw it out there. it has no resolution, it delves I to the minutiae of people's lives for no reason, and at the end the reader is left baffled as to why she would even consider this a good read.

April 3, 2008

Naked and shivering, Roger Keegan awoke bound to a chair. He sat in the center of a pool of harsh incandescent light, but the room around him was pitch-dark. His feet were flat on the cold concrete floor. Metal handcuffs bit into his wrists, which were secured behind his back. All he could smell was ammonia.

Looks like a cellar, he thought. Am I still at the casino? He had come to Las Vegas for a few days of well-earned vacation: some cards, some strippers, maybe some surfand-turf. Somewhere between his six Cuervo-and-Cokes at the Mirage and his visit to a nearby gentlemen's club, something had gone very, very wrong.

A door creaked open in the darkness, but there was no light to draw Roger's eye. Footsteps were answered by crisp echoes as they drew closer.

Roger swallowed in a futile effort to expel the sour taste of metabolized booze from his tongue, which was coated in a vile paste. Squinting, the forty-two-year-old middle manager saw three dark figures step into the ring of shadow just outside his circle of light. Two looked like men; the other had the appealing curves of a woman.

The man on the left lit a cigarette, illuminating his brown face with a flicker of orange flame. Then he flipped his lighter shut, and all that remained was the red pinpoint at the end of his cigarette. Roger winced at the pungent aroma of tobacco. Whatever the man was smoking, it was harsh and bitter.

"So," said the man in the center. "This is him?"

"Yes," the woman replied. "He's been prepared."

Throwing fearful looks at each member of the trio, Roger said, "Wait a second, there's gotta be a mistake! I'm just a sales rep! My name's Roger Keegan, I don't -- " The clack of a round being chambered into a semiautomatic pistol cut him off.

"We should get started," said the man in the middle. He and his two compatriots stepped into the light.

They were attired in casual business clothing -- suits without ties for the men, a simple gray skirt-and-jacket ensemble for the woman. She was pale and blond, and held an odd-looking device with a syringe and a needle. Roger didn't recognize her or the black man with the cigarette. Standing between them, however, was a man with a graying beard who looked familiar.

It took Roger a moment to dredge the man's name from his memory. Then it came to him. "Holy shit!" he exclaimed, eyes wide with disbelief. "You're George Sterling! Is this a movie?"

The famous Hollywood producer-director ignored Roger and extended a hand to his male colleague. "Let's get on with it."

The black man handed Sterling the pistol. He and the woman stepped back as Sterling released the weapon's safety and looked at Roger.

"You're a lucky man," Sterling said. Then the movie mogul lifted the gun, pressed the muzzle to his own grayed temple, and pulled the trigger.

The shot resounded off the floor and walls as the left side of Sterling's head vanished in a pulpy red spray.

His body went limp, fell face-first at Roger's feet, and landed with a meaty slap. The pistol tumbled from his hand and clattered across the floor.

Blood spread in a swift tide around Roger's bare feet. Trembling now with fear and adrenaline, he shouted at the blond woman and the black man, "What the hell's going on?"

They didn't answer him. The blonde stepped forward, kneeled beside the dead Hollywood titan, and jabbed the needle of her gadget into the base of his skull, into his spinal cord. She tapped a touchpad on the side of the device. A moment later, a shimmering silver fluid began filling the syringe behind the needle, drawn up and out of Sterling's neck.

Roger yelled, "Who are you people? What is that?"

"You'll find out soon enough," the black man said, stepping behind Roger's chair.

The blonde removed the needle from Sterling's neck, stood, and walked toward Roger. "Hold him," she said.

Her cohort wrapped one muscular arm around Roger's throat and jaw. With precision and force, he twisted Roger's chin and immobilized his head.

"Stop!" Roger begged. "Please, don't do this!"

The woman met his plea with a cold smirk and icy blue eyes. "What is it you think we're about to do?"

"I...I don't know," Roger said, too scared even to guess.

Stroking his cheek, she asked, "Then why be afraid?"

While he was still concocting an answer, she jabbed the needle into the nape of his neck. Piercing agony traveled down his spine like an electric jolt. Then a searing heat flowed into him, purpling his vision and filling his head with vertigo.

He felt himself scream, but he heard only silence.

Jakes hadn't felt any fear as he'd pulled the trigger. This death would be merely an interlude, and a brief one at that.

Putting a bullet through his brain had still hurt, though.

He inhaled sharply as he felt his consciousness take root in a new form. This body's senses were sharp. He caught the competing fragrances of cheap cologne and expensive perfume.

His eyes opened, and he saw his fellow agents of the Marked. "I'm all right, Wells," he said to his male colleague.

They were each two or three bodies removed from who they had been in the future, before their identities had been encoded into nanites for their perilous undercover mission into the past. When they had first hijacked new personas, they had agreed to call one another by their new names, to maintain their covers and avoid confusion. With so few of them left, however, there was no reason not to revert to their true names.

Pleased by his new voice, he asked, "How long did it take?"

"Less than two minutes," Wells said. He glanced at Kuroda, who put away the nanite-transfer device. "The upgrades to the bonding process worked better than we'd hoped."

Jakes nodded. "Good. Then you won't mind untying me."

"If we must," Wells joked. He stepped behind the chair and removed the handcuffs from Jakes's wrists.

While his comrade untied the rest of his restraints, Jakes massaged his new wrists, scowled at the glare of the light above his head, and wrinkled his nose at the lingering bite of sulfur in the air. He looked at George Sterling's bloody corpse. It galled him to give up an identity that had blessed him with such vast wealth and influence, but it was for the best.

The Marked had recently suffered brutal setbacks in their covert war against the 4400 -- people abducted from far-flung parts of the world over the course of nearly six decades of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, taken by agents of the future determined to alter the shape of things to come. Injected with the neurotransmitter promicin, which gifted them with extraordinary paranormal abilities, the 4400 had been returned en masse on August 14, 2004, in order to avert a catastrophe that would end the world as they knew it.

In other words, the returnees had been changed and sent back to erase the past and topple the future's last bastion of stable civilization, which the Marked were sworn to defend.

Unfortunately, the war had turned against the Marked. An assassination squad -- sent by Jordan Collier, the charismatic leader of the rapidly spreading promicin movement, and led by the ex-military telekinetic returnee Richard Tyler -- had killed seven of Jakes's fellow agents.

It was likely a matter of simple luck that Jakes had escaped Tyler's attack on Wyngate Castle, the opulent redoubt that George Sterling had built with his movie-industry millions. If not for a secret passage Jakes had added to the estate, he, Wells, and Kuroda would likely be dead.

They were now the last three agents of the Marked. They alone remained to save their future from Collier and his quasi-religious promicin movement.

As his bonds fell away, Jakes stood. "That's better," he said. Kuroda handed him his clothes. He dressed quickly, then walked toward the exit. Wells and Kuroda followed him. "I wired what's left of Sterling's fortune to the Caymans with the rest of our assets," Jakes said. "We can use that as startup capital."

Kuroda picked up her briefcase, in which she carried the new nanite-transfer device. "I still don't see how we're supposed to do anything posing as these nobodies," she said.

"Impersonating people in high places worked for as long as it could," Jakes said. "Now we have to lie low."

Wells was dismayed. "How does that help us? We've already missed our window of opportunity against Collier."

"Maybe," Jakes said. "Maybe not." He opened the door to the dimly lit stairwell, where the air was hot and stuffy compared to the cool confines of the subbasement. "That's why we have to make a new friend -- one who wants to stop him as much as we do."

Over their trudging footfalls, Kuroda said, "You've already made contact with this 'new friend,' haven't you?"

"Yes, I have," Jakes said. Even though his new body was relatively young and physically fit, the heat in the stairwell had rivulets of sweat running down his back as he climbed one switchback flight after another, back to the main floor.

Laboring up the steps behind him, Wells protested, "It's still too late. The date for the calamity came and went."

"I know," Jakes said. Pushing open the door to the ground level of the hotel under construction, he squinted against the glare of the late-afternoon sun. Wind like a gust from a furnace whipped his brown hair from his face. "But all that means is that Collier prevented the disaster he knew about." He permitted himself a malevolent smirk. "It's time to give him one he won't see coming."

Solid ending to a great series.
By Erin Tempest McCutchon
As a huge fan of the series, I was disappointed when it was cancelled. However, the two 4400 books "Welcome to Promise City and this one "Promises Broken" did a good job of giving us a certain amount of closure, while still leaving us something to wonder about.
These are quick, fun reads. I believe that any fan of the show will enjoy both of these! Definitely worth the cost!

Everything A Book Based Off A TV Show Should Be
By Captain Jack
If you liked the show enough to watch it to the end, you should definitely read this. I read none of the other books, and that did not hinder my enjoyment of this book at all. Because of the freedom that writing a book provides, the scale of the threat and the action were way above what you'd expect from an episode. Even with all the motorcycle chases, explosions, and disasters that threaten all of mankind, it still managed to be consistent to the show. It's far from perfect, but that can be said of The 4000 as a whole. I considered giving it a 4, because there are some wonky, unresolved time inconsistencies and the end is a little cheesy, but if you were a fan of the series, this really is a must-buy. It will keep you on the edge of your... whatever is it is you read on, the entire way through.

A good way to end the 4400 series. Spoilers Ahead
By Adrian
I was pleasantly surprised to stumble across the two books which were written to conclude the 4400 tv series, and I was even more surprised when I found the books were very much true to 4400 form. All the main characters are there, and the interactions between them, and the forces around them are in sync with the tv series.

As for the plot, it is very much an escalation of the confrontation between the US government and promisin positive inhabitants of Promise City, re Seattle. I did have one qualm about this second book, but otherwise it's pretty good reading. I couldn't put it down to find out what happened next!

My qualms are that:
1. Jordan's about face on the use and spread of promisin seemed to sudden.
2. The very last few pages seemed like a very obvious attempt to get another set of books written. But how many times can the world be threatened? It's a bit like X Men and how Bishop time travels back and forth to secure a better world, only to find the new timeline he's created has it's own problems.

Overall Promises Broken and Welcome to Promise City are definitely required reading for any fan of The 4400 series!

Ravens in the Storm: A Personal History of the 1960s Anti-War Movement, by Carl Oglesby

In 1964, Carl Oglesby, a young copywriter for a Michigan-based defense contractor, was asked by a local Democratic congressman to draft a campaign paper on the Vietnam War. Oglesby's report argued that the conflict was misplaced and unwinnable. He had little idea that its subsequent publication would put him on a fast track to becoming the president of the now-legendary protest movement Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). In this book, Oglesby shares the triumphs and tribulations of an organization that burgeoned across America, only to collapse in the face of surveillance by the U. S. government and infighting. As an SDS leader, Oglesby spoke on the same platform as Coretta Scott King and Benjamin Spock at the storied 1965 antiwar demonstration in Washington, D. C. He traveled to war-ravaged Vietnam and to the international war crimes tribunal in Scandinavia, where he met with Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. He helped initiate the Venceremos Brigade, which dispatched thousands of American students to bring in the Cuban sugar harvest. He reluctantly participated in the protest outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention and was a witness for the defense at the trial of the Chicago Seven the following year. Eventually, after extensive battles with those in SDS who saw its future more as a vanguard guerrilla group than as an open mass movement, Oglesby was drummed out of the organization. Shortly after, it collapsed when key members of its leadership quit to set up the Weather Underground. This beautifully written and elegiac memoir is rich in contemporary echoes as America once again must come to terms with an ill-conceived military adventure abroad. Carl Oglesby warns of the destructive frustrations of a peace campaign unable to achieve its goals. But above all, he captures the joyful liberation of joining together to take a stand for what is right and just -- the soaring and swooping of a

From Publishers Weekly
Enjoying the security and comfort of his middle-class lifestyle in the suburbs of Ann Arbor, Mich., where he worked for a defense contractor, Oglesby was an unlikely candidate to move to the forefront of the countercultural antiwar movement. However, several momentous events, combined with his growing sense that the Vietnamese revolution had less to do with communism and more to do with national independence, led him to quit his job and follow his principles by becoming involved full-time in the radical organization Students for a Democratic Society. Oglesby traces his and the organization's activities from its attempts to educate the public on Vietnam at teach-ins through the more violent antiwar activities of its splinter groups. His insider's view introduces readers to the personalities and ideologies of some of the major players in SDS and the antiwar movement, and he uses recently released FBI, State Department and CIA files to show the magnitude of governmental infiltration of the organization. But what makes the book most compelling is Oglesby's in-depth knowledge of this tumultuous era and his astute observations about the influence of key events of the period—such as the murders of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy as well as military operations like the Tet offensive—on SDS and its evolving political ideology.

From The New Yorker
Writing this memoir, Oglesby was able to draw on more than four thousand pages of government intelligence about himself, gathered in the nineteen-sixties during his time as the president of the protest group Students for a Democratic Society. A former defense-industry employee with a high-security clearance, Oglesby became a prominent antiwar figure—he served on an international war-crimes tribunal with Jean-Paul Sartre and was asked to be the Vice-Presidential running mate of the Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver—but he always saw himself as a voice for moderation. This centrist perspective alienated S.D.S.’s militants, including a future leader of the Weathermen, who warned him, "We are not frustrated liberals, Carl. We are enemies of the state." In the end, Oglesby recounts, he was forced out of S.D.S. on charges of rejecting Marxism-Leninism and possibly being a federal agent. His book is a mournful tribute to the spirit of an age gone awry.

Review
"Oglesby's narrative rekindles the excitement of the 1960s when students and young professionals began making history and sensed the importance of their roles in stopping a senseless and brutal war and instigating needed social change at home. Because the book is so readable -- in an age where many students won't read "heavy prose" -- Ravens should become a text for history courses on the 1960s."

-- Saul Landau, author of "A Bush and Botox World"

"An unflinching, honest, and perceptive portrait of the sixties anti-war movement in all its promise, complexity, and contradictions. A fascinating and important book!"

-- Ron Kovic, author of "Born on the Fourth of July"

"Besides being an engaging read, this memoir about political struggle in the 1960s is a valuable document for understanding the everliving history of American liberal/radical protest."

-- Michael Parenti, author of "Contrary Notions" and "Superpatriotism"

"Oglesby's personal story is an American adventure told with charm, sadness, anger, and comedy. It's a racy read, in perfect pitch with the country-western songs of his southern Baptist roots. A must-read for anyone interested in 'how we got here today' from 'where we were in the Sixties'. The drama, heartache, exhilaration, and rage of the anti-Vietnam war movement feels so fresh it could be about our Iraq war dilemmas. His expansive, come-one-come-all mindset is a terrific shot in the arm. Unputdownable for activists, a breeze for the uninvolved."

-- Clancy Sigal, author of "A Woman of Uncertain Character"

"Carl Oglesby was known for his eloquence as a writer and speaker in those turbulent years of the movement against the war in Vietnam, when he was a leader of the Students for a Democratic Society. His memoir, written with grace and fervor, gives us a fascinating insight into the life and mind of a young radical as he immerses himself in one of the great social struggles of our time."

-- Howard Zinn, author of "The People's History of the United States"

"Carl Oglesby navigates readers through the passions, turbulence, excess, division, and movement politics of a period in American history that forever changed all who experienced it. A wild ride through the good and bad, success and tragedy of a wild era."

-- Senator John F. Kerry

An inside look at SDS and the radicalization of the anti-war movement.
By Paul Tognetti
What a long strange trip it was for Carl Oglesby! In 1965 Oglesby was busy working for the defense contractor BDS. He was happily living the middle class lifestyle in suburbia with his wife Beth and their 3 children. But independent from his duties at BDS Oglesby had quietly come to the conclusion that United States involvement in Vietnam was a huge mistake. His views on the war crystallized when he was asked to put together a campaign brochure for Democratic congressional candidate Wes Vivian. Well, one thing led to another and before long Carl Oglesby would resign from BDS and renounce his comfortable lifestyle to become President of the fledgling organization known as SDS. "Ravens In The Storm: A Personal History of the 1960's Anti-War Movement" is Carl Oglesby's memoir of those turbulant days in the mid to late 1960's when it seemed that the whole world was turned upside down. This is compelling reading folks!

What is so fascinating about "Ravens In The Storm" is the fact that this book probably could not have been written without the thousands of pages of documents from the files of the FBI and CIA that Carl Oglesby was able to obtain in recent years through the Freedom of Information Act. He no longer had to rely strictly on memory to document so many of the events that he recalls in his book. Because of the fact that the SDS had been infiltrated by government agents and his home phone had been tapped by the Feds, Oglebsy now had access to actual transcripts of many key organization meetings and phone conversations from this period.

To me what is most striking about "Ravens In The Storm" is how radicals like Bernadine Dohrn, Mike Rudd and David Gilbert were able to co-opt the agenda of SDS and steer the group in a direction totally contrary to the vision that Carl Oglesby had for the organization. Seems like the 1968 assasinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy was the last straw for most of these folks. Whereas Oglesby had sought to foster dialogue and education to help bring an end to the Vietman War the group that would come to be known as the Weathermen favored armed conflict and ultimately revolution. It seems to me that had Carl Oglesby's even-handed approach won the day that the war in Vietnam would have come to a conclusion much sooner. It was also extremely unsettling to read about Carl's 1965 meeting with a group of eight South Vietnamese business leaders who outlined a plan to bring the conflict to a rapid and just conclusion. And as Oglesby recalls on page 75 "The ghastly fact to contemplate decades later is that, in its salient points, this is almost exactly the peace plan that was adopted in 1975, ten years after that meeting and as many as three million lives later."

For me, "Ravens In The Storm" was a real eye-opener. Contrary to my recollections of the period it is comforting to know that there were some thoughtful and reasonable people like Oglesby with very honorable intentions involved in the anti-war movement. Carl Oglesby is a superb writer who tells his story with verve and makes his argument most eloquently. "Ravens In The Storm: A Personal History of the 1960's Anti-War Movement" should prove to be an important addition to the history of this period. Highly recommended!

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the 1960s Anti-War Movement
By R. Banks
"Ravens in the Storm" is at once an elegiac memoir, a chronicle of the inside workings of the antiwar movement and an apologia. There is a wistfulness about it, a sense of opportunities squandered and chances missed, but also a triumphant air that Carl Oglesby and his cohorts in the Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS movement, had actually, in the final analysis, accomplished something not achieved before or since. They made a difference at a critical time in our nation's history that has eerily familiar parallels to today, as we live through another illegal, ill-advised and unwinnable war.

The similarities to the 1960s Vietnam War era and the current fiasco in Iraq are an undercurrent in "Ravens." Oglesby never mentions our current conflict, leaving it to the reader to draw the unmistakable conclusions: a nation of sleepwalkers trusting in a corrupt government, a president with an unclear mission and a blank check, and a compliant Congress that failed to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to reign in an out-of-control administration.

Oglesby's 1960s featured a government that lied to and spied on its citizens, a corrupt, profit-driven military-industrial complex; a country bent on nation-building in a faraway place of which we had and have little cultural or historical understanding, and little sympathy for the millions of lives destroyed in a horrific and pointless war. Sound familiar?

The difference is for Vietnam they had Carl Oglesby and the SDS, and the best we could manage for Iraq was Cindy Sheehan.

The book traces Oglesby's unlikely and meteoric rise from middle-class homeowner with a wife and two kids living in the suburbs working within the military-industrial complex at Bendix Corp. -- with top-secret security clearance -- to the world stage as president of the radical student group SDS. Like Woody Allen's Zelig, Oglesby seems to have been at every major event of his time and met most of the movers and shakers of his day.

"Ravens" is well-written, mainly because Oglesby was a trained writer and editor at Bendix who also is a playwright, poet, songwriter and pretty good raconteur. He's got five other books to his credit, including two on the JFK assassination.

Here's a sample from the book, and you tell me whether it sounds like a description of where we are today:

Our national debt was up, our taxes were up, our inner cities were up in flames, our war strategists were up a tree, our kids were up to their necks in killing and getting killed in a lost cause, our North Atlantic allies were almost up in arms against us. The war had to come to an end. Johnson had to go.

Replace "Johnson" with "Bush" and you're here now, in 2008, in Iraq, not in 1968, in Vietnam.

It is the parallels with today that give "Ravens" its immediacy, its importance as a book that should be read by anyone who wants to understand how America could get itself into the kind of intractable predicament we currently are in.

But it is Oglesby's unique place in modern history that lends the book a certain gravitas. As president of SDS Oglesby turned the organization -- which at its height counted 317 chapters and 100,000 members -- toward protesting the Vietnam War and away from its grass-roots community organizing mission.

He participated in a tribunal organized by philosopher Bertrand Russell and existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre, he was at the 1968 riots at the Democratic Convention in Chicago, he was asked by Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver to be Cleaver's vice-presidential running mate in the 1968 elections, he went to Cuba and organized a program wherein Americans went to the island nation -- illegally -- to help with the sugar harvest.

But his turning of SDS into a radical antiwar organization also led to the government's illegal and violent crackdown on the entire antiwar movement, to the formation of the radical Weatherman movement and, ultimately, to the downfall of SDS at the hands of the government and its own internal entropy.

Oglesby sacrificed much for his involvement with the cause: he lost his family, was star-chambered by SDS and forced to resign from numerous jobs because of his association with the antiwar movement and his principles.

But he always (at least as he tells it) cleaved to those principles, even when it cost him dearly. He consistently promulgated a moderate liberal agenda that counseled inclusion and a willingness to promote dialog over diatribe, understanding over insurrection and engagement over violence.

The book would have been stronger with a section of photographs from the era, which would have put faces to names and places. It would have benefited by a more talented proofreader, but these are small criticisms that only in minor ways detract from its power and impact.

It is a thoughtful, reflective and insightful book. "Ravens in the Storm" should be required reading for anyone who wants to try to understand some of the most turbulent and, finally, most interesting times of the 20th century.

Aa terrific memoir!
By S. Tobin
This is a wonderful book, an exciting, very moving, fact-filled inside look at the anti-war movement of the 1960's, Oglesby's very important part of that movement, and its tragic demise. Oglesby doesn't say much about his actual emotional response to his meteoric rise as one of the main spokespersons of SDS--which must have been exhilarating--and the heartache he must have felt at seeing SDS being destroyed by government infiltration and attacks, the seizing of power by the violence-advocating Weathermen, the death of three close friends who were killed by their own bomb, and hearing his own South Carolinian family mouthing racist, right-wing nonsense. But one can read between the lines and he comes across as a rather humble, fair-minded, eloquent person who was able to tolerate complex ideas. He describes meeting and working with people like Sartre and de Beauvoir; debating US senators ; and giving anti-war talks all over the world. What Oglesby attempted to do, which comes across very clearly, and which is similar to what Obama attempts to do today, is to steer a path between the extremes of left and right, and avoid their narrow, anti-democratic positions while, at the same time, attempting to understand their concerns. It is understandable why he wrote a play called "The Peacemaker," where the hero is a man who attempted to intervene and bring an end to the tragic Hatfield-McCoy conflict.

I was moved almost to tears by his poetic description, on the last page, of the ravens who are flying, seemingly with great relish, at the windy aftermath of a hurricane in Martha's Vineyard, where he had rented a house in 1975. He started the book by describing the raven in the Bible as a better bird then the dove at dealing with the hawks. And, at the end of the book, he says:

"Ours was a movement of ravens. . .a great flocking and soaring to and fro in the big storm of the American sixties. Sometimes we could really fly. When we crashed, it was from an enormous height."

from the author
By Renae Willis
Dear Readers, I created this little book for my two daughters, one of whom was about to graduate from high school, the other from college. I've learned most of these lessons the hard way, and was hoping to spare my daughters from repeating the past. But all lessons are good lessons if we use them to improve ourselves.
If you purchase this book as a gift for someone, please remember to add your own piece of advice on page 101. This is what makes the book such a special, personal gift.
Thank you and I wish you life's most important things! Renae Willis

Not what I expected
By MRB
I was looking for a book to help me prepare for a class that I am teaching to new graduates and was hoping for more substance. Basically, there are 101 quotes throughout the book that really weren't very helpful. I supposed if you are giving this as a gift to a new grad, it would be acceptable, but it did't meet my needs.

Great Gift
By Iamentropy
I gave this as a gift and the person seemed to like it. I thought it was the perfect gift. Especially if you don't know the graduate really well!
