The King's Grace: A Novel, by Anne Easter Smith

The bestselling author of A Rose for the Crown and Daughter of York takes a young woman that history noticed only once and sets her on a quest for the truth about the murder of two boys and a man who claims to be king.

All that history knows of Grace Plantagenet is that she was an illegitimate daughter of Edward IV and one of two attendants aboard the funeral barge of his widowed queen. Thus, she was half sister of the famous young princes, who -- when this story begins in 1485 -- had been housed in the Tower by their uncle, Richard III, and are presumed dead.

But in the 1490s, a young man appears at the courts of Europe claiming to be Richard, duke of York, the younger of the boys, and seeking to claim his rightful throne from England's first Tudor king, Henry VII. But is this man who he says he is? Or is he Perkin Warbeck, a puppet of Margaret of York, duchess of Burgundy, who is determined to regain the crown for her York family? Grace Plantagenet finds herself in the midst of one of English history's greatest mysteries. If she can discover the fate of the princes and the true identity of Perkin Warbeck, perhaps she will find her own place in her family.

From Publishers Weekly
Smith's newest historical fiction (after Daughter of York) is a complex exploration of a turbulent period of English history, taking on one of its biggest mysteries: the fate of princes Edward and Richard, locked up in the Tower by Richard III. Protagonist Grace Plantagenet is the illegitimate daughter of Edward IV and had been confidant to his family—including her imprisoned half-brothers Edward and Richard. After Richard III is killed and the princes disappear, a man named Perkin Warbeck appears to challenge Henry VII, claiming to be the presumed dead Prince Richard. Determined to discover the truth of Warbeck's claim, Grace throws herself into the politics of the court, knowing that if Warbeck is Prince Richard, it could be drastic for Grace's family—especially for her half-sister Elizabeth of York, now Henry's queen. Examined through the eyes of a minor historical figure, Smith introduces readers to 15th-century political intrigue with thought, courage and honesty. Though her major historical figures (especially Henry VII) get the broad-brush treatment, Smith is careful to make Grace and her world detailed and engaging. (Mar.)

From Booklist
One of the most satisfying trends in historical fiction has been the liberation of seemingly minor historical figures from footnote status. When these formerly obscure characters take to the main stage, history is rewritten from an entirely fresh perspective. In this fictional biography of Grace Plantagenet, Smith, author of A Rose for the Crown (2006) and Daughter of York (2008), continues the fifteenth-century resurrection process with aplomb. The illegitimate daughter of Edward IV, Grace is summarily plunged into court rivalries and intrigue when a young man claiming to be the rightful heir to the throne surfaces. Is he who he claims he is, or is he Margaret of York’s pawn in an elaborate game of political chess? In this meticulously researched and elaborately plotted narrative, Smith continues to put a human face on a bitter feud between branches of a royal house that stretched over decades, spawning a seemingly endless amount of potential protagonists and material for historical fiction. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
"Never again will history overlook Grace Plantagenet....Beautifully wrought and compelling, with vivid historical detail, this is a fascinating account of one woman's determination to discover the truth about her family." -- Michelle Moran, bestselling author of The Heretic Queen

"A fascinating and vividly written take on one of history's most mysterious episodes." -- Vanora Bennett, author of Portrait of an Unknown Woman

(3.5 stars) "That old crone of a soothsayer in Winchester spake the truth."
By Luan Gaines
Top billing in Anne Easter Smith's latest novel is given to Grace Plantagenet, a woman barely recorded by history who is a blank slate upon which the author builds a feasible tale of Perkin Warbeck, the young man who claims to be one of the Princes in the Tower. Heirs of Edward IV, the princes, Edward V and his younger brother, Richard, the Duke of York, have disappeared into myth, their fate left for historians to debate. Some claim they were murdered by Richard III, or perhaps dispatched by Henry VII, grist for much speculation. Smith enters the fray through the unassuming Grace Plantagenet, a young woman brought into Elizabeth Woodville's household, wife of Edward IV. When scandalous information surfaces about the status of Bess Woodville's marriage to Edward, the marriage is declared invalid, the progeny of the union illegitimate. Greedy, ambitious and unpopular, Woodville goes into sanctuary after Edward's death, but is forced to release her sons into Richard's keeping. After Richard's death at the Battle of Bosworth, Woodville's daughter, Elizabeth of York, marries Henry VII, the taint of her illegitimacy removed by the new kin.

The Yorkist's cause remains viable, Henry Tudor reviled by those who would see their power restored. Margaret of York is deeply involved in the plotting in Burgundy, where a young boy resides under her care from 1478-1485, classically educated and groomed for his future role as the returning Richard of York. Meanwhile, Grace Plantagenet, the vehicle for moving the plot, joins Woodville's household, a favorite of the mother of Henry's new queen. As a family intimate, Grace is privy to the York machinations to unseat Henry Tudor and the early days of his marriage to Elizabeth of York. All too soon, Henry's mother, Margaret Beaufort, will overshadow her son's queen and become his most trusted confidante, Elizabeth languishing in the background. And when Woodville is accused of treachery against the crown, she is sent to the Abbey of Bermondsey, taking the faithful Grace with her (where the girl remains for the next three years). Later, joining her half-sister, Cecily's (wife of Viscount Jack Welles, Henry's step-uncle) household, Grace witnesses the unfolding drama of Perkin Warbeck claims, Henry's greatest fear realized.

Nurtured by Margaret of York, Warbeck is the true focus of this novel, his growing threat to Tudor's rule, a threat that lasts for eight long years. Behind the scenes, Grace comforts Woodville (made much more tolerable than usually described), continues a lovelorn infatuation with a first cousin, attends her half-sisters in Henry's court and even travels to Burgundy on a secret mission. Grace's tentative, yet obstinate nature is revealed in her obsession with her Yorkist cousin, even after marriage. Grace is a creature ruled by her emotions, whether sympathy for an unsympathetic Woodville or ambivalence toward her husband, who tolerates Grace's outrageous behavior and her involvement with Perkin Warbeck's adventures. Smith's novel is a patchwork of odd pieces, some more carefully stitched than others. Still, that's the goal of historical novelists, creating plausible scenarios from bits of history, a balance of fact and fiction, in this case the fate of Perkin Warbeck, the Yorkist hope for restoring the throne to York while wreaking revenge on an arrogant Henry Tudor. Luan Gaines/2009.

Banal and predictable
By S. McGee
Anne Easter Smith is no Sharon Penman, despite the superficial similarities in crafting epic-length historical fiction based on the events of the Middle Ages in England. In Penman's hands, the turbulent years that followed the defeat of Richard III at Bosworth and the gradual disappearance of the Yorkist cause as the Tudor dynasty brought peace and prosperity to England, could have been transformed into a lively book. Instead, the story of Grace Plantangenet's coming of age in this era ends up a rather limp read.

All that is known of the real-life Grace Plantagenet is her name, and that she was an illegitimate daughter of Edward IV who was some kind of attendant on his queen, Elizabeth Woodville, at the latter's death and funeral. On that basis, Smith has been free to imagine an entire life for Grace, revolving around the conspiracies of the early years of the Tudor reign that saw several serious rebellions against Henry VII's embryonic dynasty. Even as Henry's wife Elizabeth, daughter to Edward IV, gave birth to one child after another to carry the Tudor name into history, pretenders to the crown challenged the right of those children to inherit -- in the name of her vanished brothers, the famous Princes in the Tower.

That's a lot of literary luxury which Smith could exploit. But she manages to make the Tudors and the remaining Plantagenets feel like little more than the modern-day dysfunctional family (with the added twist that its head could not only lock you up in your room but take you out and behead you in public for misbehavior). Grace's rebellious streak -- she is willing to cling to her belief in the Yorkist cause long past the point when her half-sisters have given up -- doesn't gibe with what Smith portrays of her personality. How could a young woman willing to docilely wait on an ailing and cantankerous queen, shut up in a monastery, simultaneously be the same kind of person willing to challenge a king? And why is she so willing to believe in that cause in the first place? (The implicit argument that she will find an answer to her own crisis of identity is thin and unconvincing.) Smith never really provides any compelling rationale for Grace's apparent certainty that Perkin Warbeck is really her young half-brother Richard, while the later volte face is a bit laughable. Anyone who read Smith's previous book focusing on Margaret of York (Daughter of York: A Novel) will find that Margaret has gone from being a sympathetic, wise ruler to a rather manipulative power player who doesn't care who is hurt by her machinations.

It's unfortunate that this period of time seems to be lacking in good historical fiction. Sandra Worth's recent historical novel focusing on Elizabeth of York is downright bad; this, for all its faults, is reasonably true to history and (for those with an above average tolerance for unnecessarily florid language along the likes of "certes" and "spake") quite readable. It's just not nearly as good as it could be. For a sense of what this book could have been, I'd urge reading The King's Grey Mare. This novel focuses on Elizabeth Woodville, partly through the eyes of the same Grace Plantagenet who (in another parallel with Smith's book) falls in love with Richard III's illegitimate son, John of Gloucester. But Jarman's characters are richer and her writing far superior. A good book about Elizabeth of York is the somewhat dated Tudor Rose (Shadows of the Crown series), which should be reissued soon along with Margaret Campbell Barnes's other novels. When compared to the heroines of either novel, Smith's Grace Plantangenet looks, despite all her adventures, like a rather naive and slightly dim-witted young woman and her creator a writer who has yet to find a way to make her plots, characters and writing live up to their potential.

The awful wiles of women...
By Amy M. Bruno
Grace Plantagenet, bastard daughter of King Edward IV of England is only mentioned once in history - in a account written first hand about the small party seen escorting the Dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville's funeral barge. This lack of the Grace's historical background provides the author, Anne Easter Smith, complete control over her heroine, which is quite unique in a historical fiction novel (if it's a GOOD historical fiction novel, that is!).

Grace spends the first 11 years of her life in an abbey, when one day Dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville summons her to court. England is in much turmoil at this time - King Edward IV is dead and the marriage between he and Elizabeth has been declared invalid and their children made bastards, based on the facts now coming to light of Edward's previous betrothal. Edward's brother, King Richard III wears the crown, the two York princes and heirs to the throne are in the tower for "safe keeping" and Henry Tudor is threatening to invade.

When Henry Tudor succeeds with his invasion and King Richard III dies in battle, the Tudor Dynasty is born. Edward and Elizabeth's daughter, Bess, reluctantly marries the usurper and surprisingly they end up very happy together. They will eventually produce four children: Arthur, Mary, Margaret and the infamous, Henry VIII.

As his hold on the crown is not very secure, Henry is constantly fearful and paranoid. He suspects Elizabeth Woodville of plotting against him and sends her to Bermondsey Abbey. Grace accompanies her out of respect and feelings of gratitude, although she never thought she'd be once again in an abbey. This part was really interesting to me - we get to see a softer side of the formidable Woodville woman and even though she's every bit of a Royal snob, she is a real human being underneath and I actually grew to like her a bit! The proper and moral Good Queen Bess and her less than moral, impetuous sister, Cecily bring amusing moments to the novel and provide a sense of family among the siblings. Grace is the diplomat between these two very strong personalities.
Stories of a young man calling himself Richard, the lost duke of York, begin reaching England. No one knows what to believe - is it the lost prince or a boatman's son from Tournai named Perkin Warbeck (sp) pretending to be Richard? And if he is just a boatman's son, how does he know French & Latin? Grace's inquisitive nature takes her on a mission to find out the truth - for her and for her family. In the end, nothing is quite what it seemed to be.

Not only is The King's Grace about the mystery of Perkin Warbeck, but of Grace - a girl who is trying to find her own path in life and the obstacles she overcomes to get there. Sweet natured and one for the underdogs, Grace is a pleasure to read about and I truly enjoyed this story. I'm no expert on The Princes in the Tower, so I can't really comment on Smith's explanation of the Perkin/Richard debate, but her conclusion doesn't seem too out there and was believable for me. And the happy ending was a nice change of pace from your usual historical fiction ending.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of Kruger's pun-filled cozy, the first in a new series, Ariadne "Ari" Evans, the 29-year-old owner of Ariadne's Web (a knitting shop in Freeport, Mass.), is shocked to discover the body of a customer, Edith Perry, strangled with some of her best homespun yarn. How did the murderer enter the shop after hours? Who had keys? What was the motive? Determined to get the answers to these questions, Ari persuades detective Joshua Hayes to let her help in the investigation. Under suspicion are Ari's closest friend, a spinner, and her husband, who feared losing their farm because the victim's abutting land was under threat of development. Keeping the plot bubbling along are a host of small-town characters, including Ari's harassing ex-husband, an avaricious realtor, the local gossip, Edith's husband and ne'er-do-well son. An attack on Ari provokes her into action and, heedless of danger, she sets a trap for the killer with smashing results. Kruger is also the author of Death on the Cliff Walk and other titles in her Gilded Age mystery series.

Love the warm comfortable feel to the story. When there are women, and yarn, and knitting needles there is bound to be a story involved. I like how the story develops and they relate to one another. Takes me back to a simpler time where we gathered as women and spend time with one another in a quiet peaceful time - throw in a good mystery for good measure and the book is a sure fire winner! ENJOY!I like the comfort of purchasing on Amazon. I know I can count on them for excellent service and I have never been let down. Sometimes it is necessary to make a return of an item and I like the flawless way that returns can be handled on Amazon. They are without a doubt the very first “go-to” whenever I want to make a purchase. Whether it is a book, or something for my home or office, or an item of clothing I always check for availability on amazon first. When I want to get a gift item and have it delivered directly to the home of the recipient it is truly awesome! I also find it exceptionally helpful when I want to buy multiples of a specific item as I can usually find what I want from one source or from multiple sources. Thanks Amazon for making it so easy to purchase whatever I want, whenever I want! I love to shop from my computer or even from my phone, or even in my pj’s!

A Fun Beach Read

Being a knitter I enjoyed the setting of this mystery and of course the fact the murder involved yarn.

A small town setting where the owner of a yarn store finds a dead body in her store kept me guessing Who Done It. A fun beach read!

Great book to read before you get married.
By L. Deneen
I just bought this book and read it and I love it. I'm engaged and this book really talks about relating to one's partner and how to properly communicate with one another. I liked how it talked about dealing with conflict in your relationship. In the book, they likened the fighting that couples do to a "dance", when couples fight, they push each other's buttons and get reactions that just go back and forth in a "dance". This book definitely made me think about how I deal with my relationship and how I fight with my fiance. Another point the book brought up is that you should never be against your partner in an argument, you need to remember you both are on the same side, going for the same goal (the argument being resolved!) This book made me think about how I treat my partner, I should treat him with respect because he is God's gift to me, not my enemy!! I really, really think this book should be read by everyone before they get married and divorce would be prevented a large amount of the time! I highly, highly recommend it!

Recommended for every engaged couple
By Jean L. Stewart
This is an excellent pre-marital tool. I have learned a lot and I highly recommend it to anyone considering marriage. It is a great counselor before the couselling. Our date is actually a little over a year into the future, but we both are of the mindset to have our heads as well as our hearts and spirits on straight before venturing into our life together. This books helps to outline as well as provide details of how to make rational decisions regarding the most important decision one can make in a lifetime. I caution everyone. Do not take your vows lightly. Count the cost before you start to build.

Chapter One: The Courage to Confront -- Facing Your Own Indifference

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

-- John 8:32 (NIV)

In just a short time I will have been on Earth one half century. I've already started celebrating this benchmark. So many memories. When this milestone birthday came up recently in conversation, a friend asked me, "What words of wisdom have you garnered? What would you do differently and what would you say to those who feel that they only go around once and feel powerless to correct what may be perceived as less than glowing results?"

I thought before I answered and then said, "There is nothing worse than reaching the end of your life and wondering what could have happened, or should've happened, but somehow didn't happen." The sad memories of a lost opportunity have made many people bitter the rest of their lives. Often it is not the fatigue of the Olympic competitor that is debilitating as much as it is the feeling that if he had lunged farther, or pushed harder, he might have been holding the golden cup of victory as opposed to the bottled water of defeat.

None of us welcomes regret. We want to live to the fullest, spiritually, financially, and even relationally. Yet we often settle for less than the best life we could live. Lulled into sleep by a sense of apathetic compliance, we accept as limitations situations that could be transcended. Are you tired of living from paycheck to paycheck? Do you feel like you're stuck in a job while wishing you had a career? Hold your breath while credit cards clear? Do you grow weary of those closest to you feeling as if they cannot get in touch with who you really are? No one knows but you the extent to which your public success masks private failures. Do you want more out of this next phase of life than what you have now?

Most of us do not want to wander aimlessly, taking life as it comes. We want to take charge of our destiny and see goals accomplished progressively, according to a plan. There are things in our lives that limit us.

You can only correct what you are willing to confront. Now, I have to admit, confrontation isn't always something that I enjoy. But I have learned over the years to say what has to be said and face what has to be faced.

Many choose to live in a perpetual state of denial rather than do the hard work that is needed to confront issues, weaknesses, and inconsistencies in themselves and others.

Do you have the courage to face the dark, silently sinister enemy that may be lurking inside of you? Do you have the courage to confront yourself? Don't worry, I am here with you. For the purpose of healing and not hiding, take a heart-to-heart look at some issues that may be stopping you from reaching your goals and living your life to the fullest. Things can turn out the way you want, if you're willing to hear the truth.

Stop the Madness

Perhaps you're familiar with the process known as intervention. Frequently used for cases of abuse of alcohol and drugs as well as for addictions to unhealthy behaviors, intervention is a valuable tool for helping the person who has destructive behavior see the patterns of his life and their effect on those around him. While an individual will deny the problem and resist assistance from friends and family who attempt to aid him one-on-one, the intervention brings the entire circle of key relationships abruptly into the addict's presence, often using the element of surprise. Surrounded by those who know her best, the person is forced to look at her addictive or compulsive behavior and examine her life, perhaps facing the truth of it for the first time. As each person shares what she sees and feels about the deterioration of her relationships, it becomes next to impossible for her to deny the problem. Here are the people who love her the most, all sharing similar observa-tions, concerns, and solutions for the problem that has taken over her life.

Interventions can be extremely effective in helping addicts accept help. When conducted in a spirit of love and encouragement, the intervention can save the life of the addict and reawaken her to a world filled with opportunities for health and wellness. It is simply amazing how love can win out over obsessions, addictions, and adversities. Love can be a tremendous deterrent to destructive behavior; it gives the individual the support she needs to change her life. Though the Bible says that love is as strong as death, it is stronger than debt, divorce, depression, or any obstacle.

This intervention will not consist of a normal group of teary-eyed, emotionally charged individuals. You're likely not addicted to drugs, and not overtly destructive, but there has been an erosion of growth and wholesome abundance in your life. Today we are staging an intervention to get you out of this rut!

Who is joining us? We could certainly have your spouse or partner testify; they have witnessed the consequences of your apathy. Your kids could speak up as well. Perhaps your best friend. Your siblings. Your parents. Coworkers. Your pastor. Your apathy has affected each of them, dulling the edges of your talent and ambition and hiding the best parts of yourself from them. Many people in your immediate circle may be watching you live your life in ways that are far beneath your potential and character. Ask those people in your immediate circle what they've noticed and witnessed in your life.

But for now, imagine you just got home from work, and as you walk into the house, you unexpectedly find, sitting around the table, your friends who cared enough to come to this intervention to get your life out of the dismal realm of the ordinary and into the spectacular realm of extraordinary possibility thinking. Supposedly to support you, but more accurately, as we are about to see, silently enabling you. These friends today are confronting you. Are you ready?

The Distant Dreamer

Beads of perspiration appear on her forehead as Dee opens her mouth to speak. You know Dee. She is the dreamer who always stayed near you in the early years. She is like the voice in your car's navigational system, the one who used to navigate your decisions. Lately, she has been quiet, silent, as you make wrong turn after wrong turn, delaying your arrivals and hindering your progress. But now, with a nervous edge, hating that she has been selected to be the icebreaker, with a parched throat and a crack in her voice, she begins the process:

"It's been so painful to watch you settle for less and less in your life, working a job beneath your talents and capabilities, accepting the roles that others assign to you, giving up the creative pursuits that once fueled your ambition. I'm the part of you that longs to be all that you were created to be, the dreamer inside you who loves to look ahead and aim for the top.

"I remember so many big plans we had back in the beginning. We knew there would be obstacles, but we were young and had set our eyes on the stars. We were going to go beyond what you had growing up, to have a fuller, richer, more liberated existence. You had so much imagination and such a vision for where you were going and how you were going to get there. You could see yourself in your mind's eye, growing, reaching, and attaining a life of satisfaction, contentment, and joy."

It is obvious to the others waiting to speak that your walls of defense are as high and formidable as the walls of Jericho! Dee knows it, too. But with a strength that only comes when we finally share the truth, she releases her concerns. She now realizes that she should have said this to you years ago instead of silently letting you go this far off course.

"Do you know how hard it has been for me? I mean, I love you, and I hate to watch your life get harder and your ability to see the pinnacle that was once your destination and motivation seem to disappear in the daily fog of working, living, and then working some more." Looking you in the eye for the first time, she continues: "I watched as your circumstances got tighter and choked the wind out of your lungs. Disappointments set in, followed by losses and realities that threatened your hopes for ever experiencing a different, better life that would allow you to be who you really are and live out your God-given purpose. Those around you did not encourage you. I tried to come around to nurture and support you, but you pushed me away, becoming more and more distant and detached.

"Instead of fighting to keep the fire inside you alive, you let the embers die by becoming addicted to a life without dreams, without hope." Almost venting she continues, "After all I did for you. I brought you through the hard times. Don't you remember? I was there when life was bad. Did you just forget all of that? You locked me up in the cellar of your soul and placed me on a starvation diet. All I hear from you is complaints about who 'wasn't there for you' and who didn't treat you right. But I was there," Dee Dreamer continues.

"Or I would have been if you had let me! Over time you've become cynical and negative, subtly bitter and internally angry, looking for targets to blame -- your parents, your lack of opportunities, your family. People don't know it because you are masterful at covering up your true feelings. I know this is not the life we dreamed of for you when you were younger. This is not the love you wanted, the house and career you wanted. I know better than anyone sitting at this table how you dreamed of more than this. You were meant to be a high achiever. My God, you have gifts you aren't even touching, much less using. This ordinariness doesn't become you, and I had to say something today! It is beneath you and what you were created to be. Your answers, your power, is in your dreams!"

Reaching out to you with a warm hand and a now wet face, Dee gently touches your shoulder and says, "I need you -- no, we all need you." The others sitting at the table give a warm nod. There is the sound of a few quiet sniffles. Dee Dreamer finishes her appeal with these final words: "Instead of...

Reposition Yourself Reflections
By A. Pulliam
I actually had first checked this book out from my local library, but after reading the introduction and the first couple of reflections, I decided that it was something that I wanted to keep. I also bought a copy for a good friend of my and he has been enjoying the book as well. It's one of those books that relates to everyone. It's a spiritual book, but it's not "preaching" to you which makes it very easy to relate to. Great book, great gift.

Reposition Yourself Reflections: Living a Life Withuot Limits
By Debra Noel
I am having a difficult time finishing this book. While the concept is good and obviously written by someone who cares about people and how they live their lives, it is not easily read by someone who is either going through depression at this time in their lives or to someone coming out of the dark abyss of depression. Many of the recommendations that sound simple not only to the author but by anyone not affected by depression, the recommendations and workbook can seem overwhelming to someone who has a difficult time just getting out of bed each morning and getting dressed. It, so far, hasn't touched on the anxiety many feel when they have more than one thing that is expected to be completed by someone, before the day is over. It's hard for people to understand, it's hard for the person going through this anxiety to understand, especially when only a few months ago that person seemed to be the queen of multitasking, to understand what's going on in their brain that make the simple tasks feel overwhelming. Hopefully the remainder of the book will deal more with that. I do believe the author has the very best intentions and I am fascinated when I hear him speak on TV interviews.

When She Was Bad: A Thriller, by Jonathan Nasaw

The author of Twenty-Seven Bones and The Girls He Adored delivers another nailbiting thriller featuring former FBI agent E. L. Pender. Breathtaking and suspenseful, yet leavened with a perverse and quirky humor, When She Was Bad examines the terrifying relationship between two hot young lovers who also happen to be coldblooded killers.

"Multiples in love: imagine the possibilities," said one of the twisted couple's earlier victims. Lily DeVries and Ulysses Maxwell have quite a few things in common. Both were horrifically abused as children, then diagnosed with multiple personality disorder, and eventually incarcerated in the same Oregon mental institution. There, they fell into the hands of the well-meaning, genially sinister director, Dr. Al.

When the ingenious lovers engineer a bloody escape, the only people who have a chance of stopping them are the rumpled, endearingly flawed E. L. Pender and Dr. Irene Cogan, a brilliant psychiatrist who loves Lily almost as much as she fears Maxwell. With the aid of a private investigator, Pender and Cogan take on a pair of killers who win hearts as easily as they slit throats.

A sexually charged thriller of undeniable originality and page-turning suspense, When She Was Bad moves at a rapid clip from the inner recesses of two twisted psyches to a terrifying climax and brilliantly realized finale.

Emotionally taut and difficult to put down, this tale of sex, romance, madness, and murder will not disappoint.

From Publishers Weekly
While novels featuring a love affair between the multiple personalities of two psychopathic serial killers are certainly rare, any points Nasaw might have earned for originality are canceled out by the improbable plot of this fourth E.L. Pender adventure (after 2004's Twenty-Seven Bones). British psychiatrist Alan Corder has spent years trying to cure Ulysses Maxwell, an in-patient at a prestigious Oregon treatment facility, of his murderous alternate identities. Maxwell, who's obviously clever enough to game the system, gets an unexpected ally when the attractive and deranged Lily DeVries arrives at the center. After Corder hosts the two killers at his house, they butcher him, his wife and their psychiatric attendants and make their escape. Soon ex-FBI series hero E.L. Pender and Dr. Irene Cogan, a psychiatrist who was kidnapped and tortured by Maxwell, take up the pursuit. Though Nasaw raises interesting questions about identity and sanity, his superficial answers leave this blood-soaked action yarn lacking genuine thrills or chills. (Sept.)

"Are you sure you're going to be all right now?"

"I'll be fine, Grandma."

"I hate to go off and leave you."

Lily rolls her eyes. "Grandma, I'm seventeen years old, I can take care of myself for two days."

"Of course you can, dear. It's just..." No need to complete the sentence -- they both know how it ends.

"Dody, she'll be fine," chimes in Lily's grandfather. "Now can we please get this show on the road -- I want to be off the highway before dark." His night vision isn't what it used to be -- but then, as he's fond of saying, what is?

In the circular driveway at the bottom of the wide marble steps waits a gleaming black Mercedes SUV loaded with enough provisions to have seen Napoleon's army safely home from Moscow. Dark-haired, dark-eyed Lily hugs her roly-poly grandmother, who smells like stale baby powder. When her grandfather stoops to give Lily a peck on the cheek, the overpowering scent of his aftershave brings tears to her eyes -- apparently his sense of smell ain't what it used to be, either.

Lily waves from the top of the steps until the SUV is out of sight, then heads back inside the two-story, Mission-style Pebble Beach mansion where she's lived with her grandparents since she was almost five. To celebrate being alone, she sneaks up to her grandmother's bedroom, steals a cigarette from the pack of Dorals Grandma hides in a bureau drawer, and smokes it out on the balcony, waving it around languidly, wrist bent like some old movie actress.

But the reality of being home alone never lives up to the expectation for long. After a few puffs the cigarette tastes hot and stale, and when she stubs it out and goes back inside, the mansion is so empty and echoey that she can hear the tick-tock of the grandfather clock down in the parlor from her second-floor bedroom.

Flopping onto her bed, Lily switches on the television and clicks through the channels. MTV is showing one of its beach parties, college kids dancing on the sand, the boys in their baggy shorts and scraggly wanna-be goatees, the heavy-breasted girls in skimpy bikinis that barely cover their nipples. Lily is both disturbed and fascinated by the overt sexuality. Scaredy cat, she chides herself -- don't you even want a normal life someday?

Just to see what it would feel like, she strips down to her bra and panties, tries on a few moves in front of the floor-length mirror mounted on the closet door. Oh yeah, she thinks happily, blushing like a pomegranate at sunset, I could do this.

But after only a few seconds of modest abandon, an image from Lily's past fills her mind. Strong, sharp-scented male hands, large enough to palm her head like a softball, pry her jaws apart; an impossibly swollen, purple-headed penis forces itself into her mouth, choking her; a flashbulb explodes into white glare.

She reels away from the mirror, fighting for breath as if she were still that baby, and sits on the edge of the bed, head between her knees, breathing iiiin and ouuut, niiice and caaalm. A commercial for acne cream is playing; she feels around for the remote and blindly switches off the television, then guides herself through an exercise she's learned from her psychiatrist, Dr. Irene Cogan. That was then, this -- she raises her head, glances around the familiar bedroom -- is now. That was a memory, this is the reality. You're not that helpless baby anymore -- no one can touch you without your consent.

And gradually the panic subsides. Lily turns on the bedroom light, slips on a bathrobe and a pair of slippers, and is halfway down the wide, curving staircase when the phone starts ringing. She charges back up the stairs, throws herself across the bed, fumbles the receiver off the hook just before the downstairs answering machine kicks in. "Hello?"

"Is this the home of...Lyman and Dorothy DeVries?"

"Who's calling, please?" Lily is well-versed in telephone safety.

"This is Sergeant Mapes, California Highway Patrol."

Everything's gone quiet, like just before an earthquake. "Yes, this is the DeVries residence."

"Who am I speaking to?"

"This is Lily. Lily DeVries -- I'm their granddaughter. Is something wrong?"

"Is there an adult around I can speak to?"

"Yes -- me." It isn't the first time Lily has been mistaken for a child over the phone. "Has something happened to them?"

"There's been an accident. A bad one." A pause. "A very bad one." Another pause, as if he wanted Lily to ask him a question. She couldn't think of one, though -- all she could think of was how tired she had suddenly become. "I'm sorry to have to be the one to break the news, Miss DeVries. From what we've been able to ascertain, your grandfather seems to have lost control of the vehicle on Highway One, a few miles south of Big Sur. It went through the guardrail, over the cliff, and landed on the rocks sixty feet below. Both bodies were still in the car. If it's any comfort, they were almost certainly killed outright."

Lily had to put the receiver under her pillow to muffle the squeaky, unintelligible sounds coming out of it. Too tired, she thought, rolling onto her stomach and closing her eyes -- I'm too tired to deal with this.

Brilliant! An absolutely original psychological thriller!
By pamela good
Excellent reading. Highly recommended. You will read this book in one sitting.

Jonathan Nasaw's new thriller, When She Was Bad, again demonstrates why Nasaw has been called "the new master of the psychological thriller" (Toronto Sun). The plight of Lily touches you because her character is so well-developed that you sympathize with her even while she angers you. FBI agent, E.L Pender, is again onboard as is the serial killer, Max/Kinch/Lissey.

Readers will better understand this one if they have already read The Girls He Adored, Nasaw's first book in the series. Although the subject is serious (dissociative identity disorder--once called multiple personality disorder), a quirky humor is present throughout and makes the tension more bearable. Nasaw delves deeply into the psyches of two sexually abused individuals and wants the reader to understand how events in their young lives fractures their minds so badly that they can no longer cope.

It seems as though is not Nasaw's objective to try and trick the reader as to who killed whom. His writing is much more intelligent and serious, with humor thrown in for a read that is both thrilling, while seeking to define what happens to sexually abused individuals in our society today.

A sequel worth reading!
By Yolanda S. Bean
Oh, I enjoyed this book quite a bit! It was a very fast read, and it made for a rather happy ending for everyone involved - which was nice, since though it's the fourth installment in the E. L. Pender series, it actually functions as a direct sequel to the first book in the series, The Girls He Adored. Nearly all of the characters reappear here. Though, I was a little disappointed for Max's fate - he was a pretty charming (and very disturbing) killer in the first book... also, the end of this one got pretty preachy about child abuse, but it still made for a very exciting book and one that I'm happy to have read (even if the first one, as so often is the case, was much better!)

Exciting to read!
By Guadalupe R. Hernandez
Thus was my first book by this author and I loved it! The first thriller I ever read was Gone Girl, and though that one was great too, this one is filled with so much madness and murder and excitememt! Lol. Apparently it's like a sequel or something, so I'll have to go back and read the others, but reading this was still quite the adventure that I'd recommend to anyone who doesn't get offended by raunchy-ness easily.

Not Much Substance
By Leigh H. Royden
I go this book as a gift and figured it deserved a read. It's not a horrible book, but it doesn't have much in it. More motivation than advice, the entire book could be summed up by saying "get off your ass and get to work", only then the author wouldn't have made millions off a few weeks (being very generous here) worth of work.

It's not the worst thing I've ever read, but if you're looking for help or a gift, I would continue your search.

Brian H. Griffin is a superior author
By Mutiny
Wish it, Want It, Do It by Brian H. Griffin is a much better read than this pretentious piece of trash. The saving grace is that I frequently use its pages to clean my dog's poop out of my neighbor Quagmire's yard.

The book makes 3 points and 2 of them are the same point
By Greg
The Book makes 3 points and 2 of them are the same point.. Look at the title. Isn't Wish it and dream it basically the same thing?

- A pseudo self help guide that has about as much substance as a T.V. guide. It's actually quite harmful. The book posits forth a well concealed artifice of simple quick fix claims, that it can help you solve any and all of life's problems. These sorts of books tend to pander to people without many resources, it targets those within the narrowest socioeconomic range. Sure you can wish it and dream it and do it.. but only if you have advantages to begin with, advantages that most people, especially those who this book is marketed towards, don't have.

Its a simple exploitation of the American people who could use the extra money they'll end up spending on this book, for other more important and legitimate things. All these types of books provide is a false promise, a shallow "education" if you can even call it that, which in turn allows the author to profit off of gullible and sometimes desperate people, who need meaningful help.

Last Laughs: Cartoons About Aging, Retirement...and the Great BeyondFrom Brand: Scribner

At long last, here are cartoons about the truly important issues. Featuring twenty-six of The New Yorker's most talented cartoonists, Last Laughs is a provocative and exhilarating collection that will amuse, inspire, and occasionally unnerve everyone obsessed with the perennially compelling topics of old age, retirement, and,

yes, death.

Longtime New Yorker cartoonist Mort Gerberg has assembled an all-star cast of gifted and popular greats such as George Booth, Roz Chast, Leo Cullum, Frank Modell, and Jack Ziegler to join him in this exclusive collection confronting, illuminating, and celebrating the inevitabilities of life. Everything from cloning to cryogenics is tackled with humor and pathos. It turns out the Grim Reaper can be funny.

Also included in this book are brief reflections from the contributors that give readers a glimpse into their unique personalities. These artists prove that they are just as funny with the written word as they are with the image. Last Laughs is a must-have for fans of literary cartoons and anyone interested in slightly off-kilter insights about life and death.

From Publishers Weekly
Twenty-six New Yorker cartoonists take on aging, retirement, death and the Great Beyond. George Booth, Edward Koren, Marisa Acocella Marchetto (creator of Cancer Vixen) and Gahan Wilson are among those confronting the Reaper. Some cartoons in the book have previously appeared in the New Yorker, but most are originals. Contributors range in age from their 30s to the 90-year-old Frank Modell. Various cartoons deal with the shock of baby boomers as their old age looms: Roz Chast depicts the body with a mind of its own, aging despite its owner's wishes; J.B. Handelsman draws an executive telling an older worker that the company encourages certain employees to die. But many of the cartoons celebrate the continuing vitality of seniors, such as Lee Lorenz's female astronaut who will be the first Gray Panther to walk on the moon. The hooded Grim Reaper is a continuing presence, but many cartoons are set in heaven or hell. In the back of the book, most of the contributors say who they would like to meet in the Great Beyond. In this life-affirming collection, even death can't halt the momentum of the human comedy. (Nov.)

Review
"Be careful about taking this book on a long plane trip. From page to page you'll chuckle, you'll guffaw, you'll be seized with hysterical, uncontrollable laughter. Fellow passengers will be curious and you'll say (with tears streaming down your face) it's all about age and death. Fellow passengers might ask for a change of seats. You won't mind one bit as you become more and more helpless with laughter."

-- Frank McCourt, author of Angela's Ashes and Teacher Man

Laughing to the end...
By lyman
An unlikely topic for humor - hence - very fresh, clever, and funny cartoons. I almost died laughing and am very pleased that each contributing cartoonist was able to rise to the occasion.

Great laughs for the holiday season.
