Having recovered from the catastrophic events of Wildfire, the Starfleet Corps of Engineers team on the U.S.S. da Vinci meets its new second officer: Mor glasch Tev, an arrogant Tellarite who's the best there is -- and he knows it.

Even as Captain Gold and Commander Gomez get used to their acerbic new officer, the S.C.E. team faces crises in its own solar system. A strange vessel appears in the middle of San Francisco that the S.C.E. must deal with -- aided by engineers extraordinaire Montgomery Scott and Miles O'Brien. Then they have to help the Venus terraforming team -- a mission that brings Bynar computer expert Soloman to a difficult crossroads.

That's only the beginning of the challenges for the Corps as it faces a Ferengi with a time machine, a prison colony in a black hole -- and a mission from the Dominion War that comes back to haunt the da Vinci crew in more ways than one. . . .

From Aftermath

by Christopher L. Bennett

Chapter 1

"Danged Breen," Katie Huang complained. "They put a hole in my city."

Sanek, her new assistant, looked up at her as they worked their way down the slope, his bright orange hard hat clashing with his sallow skin. "The Breen put a great many holes in San Francisco. However, most of those holes have been filled."

"Yeah," Katie acceded grudgingly -- or not so grudgingly, she decided as she caught a glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge, now restored and reopened. She remembered how it had looked a year ago, after the Breen attack on Starfleet Headquarters -- the north tower crumpled, the span missing a huge chunk in the middle. It was a miracle the bridge hadn't collapsed. Some had wanted to leave it as it was as a monument, but it was too valuable a thoroughfare, and too important a symbol of the City by the Bay, not to be restored to its former glory. As proud as Katie was of her fellow civilian builders and maintenance workers, she gave a silent thanks to the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, Earth Division, for their tireless efforts on the city's behalf.

"But that's just it," she went on. "All this time, and there's still this great big ugly scar in the middle of my town."

"That is more the fault of the geology than the Breen."

"They had sensors. They must've known about the underground caverns." The Breen had been indiscriminate in their attack, hitting parts of the city far removed from the military targets and costing many innocent lives. They'd even attacked the Starfleet Museum Center, destabilizing the ground beneath it and opening a sinkhole into which most of the complex had collapsed. The losses to art, culture, and science were incalculable, and Katie felt them keenly; but the massive blemish on the landscape had become her personal symbol for all of it, something that affected her on a visceral level. What had made it worse was that the continued instabilities had hampered efforts to clear and restore the site, so it still remained, even though the rest of San Francisco was as good as new.

"Still," Sanek said, "the ground is now stabilized and most of the wreckage has been cleared away. The new museum can be built soon. Perhaps the construction of a war memorial will be approved. I understand you humans are fond of such emotional representations."

Katie smiled at her new friend's very Vulcan sentiment. "Nothing wrong with a good emotional representation, Sanek. You should try it sometime."

He raised an eyebrow. "That would be illogical, as you well know."

Katie laughed and said, "I know, but you can't blame a human for trying. I'm sure lots of humans think Vulcans would be better off if they let their hair down a bit."

"Just as many Vulcans think humans would be better off if they, to maintain the metaphor, kept their hair tied up."

That prompted another laugh. "Probably, yeah. But that's what keeps the galaxy interesting." They reached the bottom of the sinkhole and activated their sensor units. Not as versatile as Starfleet tricorders, they were still good enough to scan for remaining instabilities, gas pockets, salvageable artifacts from the museum . . . or organic remains. Even now, a few victims were still unaccounted for.

Sanek focused intently on his scanner, barely paying attention to his footing, and Katie smirked. "Don't trip over any android heads."

"I beg your pardon?"

"These tunnels are where they found Data's head a few years back."

"Assuming you are referring to Lieutenant Commander Data of the Starship Enterprise, I was under the impression that his head has remained attached to his person."

"This was his head from the past. He went back in time, it got knocked off, gathered dust here for five hundred years, and got put back on." She frowned. "So his head's twenty times older than the rest of him. I wonder what that does to the warranty."

"According to the records, that was a 'prank' on the part of some cadets from Starfleet Academy -- another of your emotional representations."

Katie grinned. "That's the official story. Of course, time-travel evidence gets classified. Too dangerous, you know. Imagine the havoc someone could cause if they knew how to go back and mess around with the past." She noticed something on her scanner. "Hey, I've got some kind of . . . reading. It's coming and going . . . but yeah, it's there."

"What manner of reading?"

"I think it's some kind of subspace static," she frowned. "Under those rocks."

"Down here?"

"Hell, maybe it's some old communicator from the museum with a bit of power left. Better check it out, though -- might be a priceless antique." Again, she smirked, showing what she thought of the odds. "Help me here." Together they moved the rubble out of the way, exposing the item.

It was a small spherical object, about the size of a golf ball, covered in dust. "It is not registering on my scanner," Sanek said. "Perhaps a Starfleet-issue tricorder would do better."

"No, we don't need to call in the troops every time a problem comes up." She reached toward it.

"I would not advise touching it. We have no way of knowing its function."

"Whatever its function was, if anything, it's been blasted by the Breen's energy dampers, dumped through a sinkhole, and buried under rubble for a year. It probably doesn't do much of anything anymore. Hey, look, it's even got a crack in it. Was that there a moment ago?" She reached a finger forward to indicate the hairline fissure. Her fingernail barely brushed it.

She never heard the blast that followed -- though it rocked the whole city.

It's too quiet, thought David Gold.

He was walking to the bridge with Sonya Gomez, the same morning ritual he and his first officer had enacted every day until the da Vinci had been crippled in the incident at Galvan VI. This was their first morning back since then, and they'd resumed the ritual automatically, a natural beginning to the day when the repaired starship would launch herself out of dry dock once more. Around them the rebuilt corridors sparkled in mint condition; in the background the restored engines thrummed in perfect tune, supplying electroplasma for perfectly calibrated systems. Shipshape and Bristol fashion, Gold thought, remembering the phrase his old friend Jean-Luc liked to use in his antiquarian moments.

But it was too quiet. There was none of the pleasant bustle that had formerly filled the ship's compact corridors -- whether that of engineers pursuing their projects, constantly making adjustments to push the systems just a bit more beyond dry dock specs, or that of crewmates and friends exchanging banter and giving friendly greetings as their commanding officers walked by. All the people they passed were subdued -- the old crew members (agonizingly few) still recovering from the tragedy, the new ones still adjusting to unfamiliar surroundings. It would take time for them to get comfortable with each other, to mesh into a unit that Gold hoped could work as smoothly as the old crew -- though not in quite the same way, to be sure. The da Vinci would never be truly the same again.

Gold wondered if his morning walk with Gomez would ever be the same again either. In the past, it had been an opportunity for small talk, for exchanging shipboard gossip and chatting about family and news and trivia, having more to do with friendship than duty. To Gold, it helped to compensate for being so far from his own family.

In fact, he hadn't been sure that she was going to show up for the walk at all. Among the many fatalities had been Kieran Duffy, the ship's second officer and Gomez's lover. It had seemed from the outside like a simple shipboard romance -- until Duffy had popped the question out of the blue. Gold couldn't blame Gomez for being too farblonzhet to give him an answer. But then Duffy had sacrificed himself to save the ship, never knowing what her answer would've been. By her own admission, Gomez herself didn't know, either. One more loss to add to the list -- the loss of closure. But for a time, Gomez had blamed Gold for Duffy's death, and, though they had settled that, at least, and regained a semblance of their former friendship, Gold knew that Duffy's death would always be a barrier between them.

Gold knew she'd worked through the worst of her grief, and was ready to resume her duties. But there was no telling how long it would be before she could take joy in them again. Which was a shame. She was generally a serious sort, a hardened pro, tough on herself, prone to worry; but underneath it all was a girlish innocence and playfulness, which manifested itself in a radiant smile that filled Gold with fatherly warmth. He missed that smile.

And it was still too quiet.

Naturally, just as he thought that, a jolt went through the ship, knocking him briefly off balance. As he and Gomez ran to the bridge, the captain reflected that he had some choice words for God about His sense of timing.

The bridge was bustling with activity as the crew worked to analyze the disturbance. Yet even here it seemed too quiet, without David McAllan to announce "Captain on the bridge" as he always had. That shtick had annoyed Gold at first, but over time he'd grown accustomed to it, and now he'd give anything to hear it again. Better that than the memory of McAllan sacrificing himself, shoving Gold out from under a falling ceiling support -- of the look on the young man's face in that last moment, meeting his captain's eyes imploringly, seeking assurance that he'd done all right. Until that moment, Gold had never realized the deep respect and devotion that had underlain young David's -- his namesake's -- insistence on announcing his captain's arrival.

Anthony Shabalala, McAllan's replacement at tactical, looked for a moment like he wanted to announce Gold, but couldn't bring himself to. They weren't his words to say.

So Gold announced himself. "What's all the tumult about?"

Lieutenant Commander Mor glasch Tev, the da Vinci's new second officer, rose efficientl...

About average for this series.
By Josh R.
Once you have David Mack kill off half your crew in traditional David Mack fashion, what's left? This book gave me the same feeling I got at the start of Lost Season Two -- they built up to a really great conclusion in Season One, and then... wait... there's more? And it's, at best, only as good as the middle stuff from the first season?

The stories are competently written and have some decent science, but the novella format doesn't give the writers enough time to fully develop stories with all the nuances of the classic Trek novels. There's humor, which is good, but there's also things that might make you cringe. If you like SCE, you'll like it. If you like Trek, you'll probably enjoy it, but not enough to read again for a while.

Good, But Could Have Been Better
By David McElvenney
After the events of Wildfire and Breakdowns, I was looking forward to seeing the crew move on to new adventures with new crewmates. Some of the stories here are good--"Collective Hindsight", I think, is the best---but some are disappointing, particularly, for me, "Buying Time". Too much time is spent telling us that the character Tev is brusque and hard to deal with, but no one ever sits him down and explains to him the need to adjust his interactions with humans, or, for that matter, explains to the humans the similar need on their parts.
Also, in some stories, much time is spent setting up the problem to be solved and too little time is spent on the resolution of the problem. It's just "Poof! Problem solved!" with little sense of the details. I hope to see better in the future.

A fun read
By SJH
This is a good read, though a little uneven. I thought one of the stories was kinda, but others were solid and fun, and the last was pretty riveting. If you've been following the SCE thru the first 8 books, this is good addition. If you're new to SCE, this is a good intro, although I'd recommend starting w/ book 1.

Curse of the Spellmans: Document #2 (Izzy Spellman Mysteries), by Lisa Lutz

In this sidesplittingly funny follow-up to the New York Times bestselling The Spellman Files, San Francisco’s own highly functioning yet supremely dysfunctional family of private investigators are back on the case in another mystery full of suspicion, surveillance, humor, and surprise from award-winning author Lisa Lutz. Curse of the Spellmans was nominated for both the Edgar Award and the Macavity Award, and the Izzy Spellman Mysteries have earned comparisons to everything from Carl Hiaasen and Janet Evanovich to Veronica Mars and Bridget Jones.

When Izzy Spellman, PI, is arrested for the fourth time in three months, she writes it off as a job hazard. She’s been (obsessively) keeping surveillance on a suspicious next door neighbor (suspect’s name: John Brown), convinced he’s up to no good—even if her parents (the management at Spellman Investigations) are not.

When the (displeased) management refuses to bail Izzy out, it is Morty, Izzy’s octogenarian lawyer, who comes to her rescue. But before he can build a defense, he has to know the facts. Over weak coffee and diner sandwiches, Izzy unveils the whole truth and nothing but the truth—as only she, a thirty-year-old licensed professional, can.

When not compiling Suspicious Behavior Reports on all her family members, staking out her neighbor, or trying to keep her sister, Rae, from stalking her “best friend,” Inspector Henry Stone, Izzy has been busy attempting to apprehend the copycat vandal whose attacks on Mrs. Chandler’s holiday lawn tableaux perfectly and eerily match a series of crimes from 1991–92, when Izzy and her best friend, Petra, happened to be at their most rebellious and delinquent. As Curse of the Spellmans unfolds, it’s clear that Morty may be on retainer, but Izzy is still very much on the case...er, cases—her own and that of every other Spellman family member.

Lisa Lutz brings her trademark wit and humor back in what Publishers Weekly calls a “sparkling sequel.” (Re)meet the Spellmans, a family in which eavesdropping is a mandatory skill, locks are meant to be picked, past missteps are never forgotten, and blackmail is the preferred form of negotiation—all in the name of unconditional love.

Amazon.com Review
Lisa Lutz, author of The Spellman Files, is back with another story of the shenanigans of the Spellman family: The Curse of the Spellmans. The "parental unit" started a private investigation business when Dad retired from police work. His wife assists him and their two daughters, Isabel, (Izzy) a 30-year-old with a habit of being arrested, and Rae, a 15-year-old Cheetos-loving teen, would like to think that they help out in the family business. Especially where Izzy is concerned, this is a stretch. Brother David is a successful attorney who has nothing to do with the family enterprise. He has troubles of his own.

Izzy has been living in the apartment of a friend while he is away. When he returns unexpectedly, it quickly becomes clear that being roommates with an old, cigar-smoking, poker-playing, big drinker isn't going to work. Izzy moves home temporarily and then the fun begins. She decides that their new next door neighbor, John Brown, whose landscape gardening business she judges to be a cover, is somehow making women disappear. She gets herself invited to dinner, discovers a locked room, believes his name is phony, follows him everywhere, has a restraining order against her, and still she can't let it go.

Meanwhile, Rae has befriended a great guy, a cop named Henry Stone, who is almost too good to be true. The reader starts pulling for him and Izzy to get together right away, even though he doesn't deserve the aggravation. Lutz keeps the ball rolling faster and faster with David's problems, her parents' frequent vacations, which they refer to as "disappearances," and the fact that everyone in the family has secrets from one another. If there is any curse at work here, it is that all the family members are terminally nosy. What they discover about each other and the other players keeps you turning pages and hoping that Lutz is hard at work on the next installment of this zany family's misadventures. --Valerie Ryan

From Publishers Weekly
This lighthearted romp, focusing on the antics of Isabel Spellman and her family of private detectives, is delightful. There's not much vocal variation by Ari Graynor for the mystery's female characters: 30-year-old Isabel sounds exactly like her teen sister and her mother. But Graynor shines portraying some of the male characters, like Morty, the Spellmans' elderly lawyer, or Isabel's slurring, cigar-smoking roommate. Isabel digitally records conversations, and Graynor recites them back in a hilarious deadpan rendition. Lutz's first outing (The Spellman Files) was fresh, funny and unwieldy; her plotting skills take a leap forward here, masterfully juggling several compelling mystery threads at a time. The quirky Spellman family is still fun, and Graynor's sardonic and sly delivery doesn't attempt to upstage the writing. One disappointment is that S&S didn't release an unabridged version.

From Booklist
If sassy Jersey sleuth Stephanie Plum had a wacky cousin in San Francisco, it might be Izzy Spellman, the heroine of Lutz’s witty series. In this second offering (after The Spellman Files, 2007), Izzy, a reluctant member of the family’s detective business, is having the usual troubles with her kin. Her father seems in the midst of another REAFO (retirement age “freak-out,” not to be confused with MILFO, the midlife version); her mother has been leaving the house in the wee hours to puncture some poor soul’s motorcycle tires; and her teenage half sister, Rae, just accidentally drove over Izzy’s much older detective inspector pal, Henry. Then there’s new neighbor John Brown, a handsome if somewhat shifty gardener who has Izzy experiencing equal parts suspicion and lust. Lutz’s novel reads like a series of humorous vignettes, with provocative titles like “My Almost Fake Drug Deal #2.” While mystery purists may prefer a more fast-paced narrative, Lutz is an excellent choice for readers in the market for steady laughs and a smattering of suspense. --Allison Block

Planning a Disappearance? Plan on This Book
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Welcome back to the wacky world of the Spellman family. They really live in their own universe. This family of Private Investigators thinks nothing of investigating each other. They have deadbolts on their bedroom doors. They have taken to calling vacations disappearances and disappearances vacations. And they are so much fun to spend time with.

This book picks up two years after the end of the first book. And it seems everyone is acting strangely. Older brother David is staying home watching TV and eating junk. The father, Albert, is sneaking out of the house and returning with wet hair. Meanwhile, he's actually eating healthy. Olivia, the mother, is sneaking out of the house late at night herself. Youngest sister Rae is distraught about accidentally almost vehicularly manslaughtering her best friend, Inspector Henry Stone. And Isabel is hot on the trail of the copycat vandals ruining neighbor Mrs. Chandler's holiday displays. These vandals are copying the crimes that Isabel did when she was a teenage (not that she has any idea what you are talking about).

But what has really captured Isabel's attention is the Spellman's new neighbor. "John Brown" seems nice enough, but he sure has lots of shredded paper. And who really has such a common name? Plus Isabel can't track down any information on him. And he is evasive with answers to her questions. You know, simple things like where are you from? What do you do for a living? When were you born? What's your social security number? All this leads Isabel to be arrested four times (or twice depending on how you count) in a matter of months. How will it all end?

As with the first in the series, this book is hard to adequately describe. It uses short scenes (not really chapters) to propel the story forward and help us keep everything straight. I laughed multiple times as the story unfolded. Yes, there are some mysteries, but this isn't a mystery. This is a novel about a family. Which means these characters are well developed. And that's what makes the ending very touching.

With everything going on, the book never drags. And I had a smile on my face almost the entire time I was reading it. In fact, I even got caught laughing out loud in public.

A word of warning. This book (by necessity) spoils the first book about the Spellmans. So if you are interested, get The Spellman Files first.

I couldn't put the book down. While I think living with the Spellmans would drive me crazy, they are a wonderful family to visit in the pages of a novel. So pick up this wild, wacky, and wonderful novel today.

Side-stepping the genre
By D. P. Birkett
I thoroughly enjoyed this funny and brilliantly original book , although it might be false advertising to call it a detective or mystery novel. It's true that the first person narrator, thirty year old Izzy Spellman, is a private detective, and there are two disappeared women, but the mystery is not a page turner. The story centers more on her relationship with her parents (also both private eyes) her 16 year old sister, and the various men she is considering adding to her list of ex-boyfriends. (The full list is in an appendix). She is inept, in the Stephanie Plum manner, but on the whole this is chick-lit, and Bridget Jones came to mind a lot more than Miss Marples. I don't know if this qualifies as transcending the genre - maybe it's sidestepping it.
This is second in a series. I missed the first one. I'm going back to the Amazon site right now to buy it.

When Men Batter Women, by John Gottman Ph.D., Neil Jacobson Ph.D.

While national awareness of the issue of battering has increased in recent years, certain myths regarding abusive relationships still endure, including the idea that all batterers are alike. But as Neil S. Jacobson, Ph.D., and John Gottman, Ph.D., explain, this is not the case. Drawing on the authors' own research, When Men Batter Women offers a significant breakthrough in our understanding of the men who become batterers—and how to put a stop to the cycle of relationship violence.

After their decade of research with more than 200 couples, the authors conclude that not all batterers are alike, nor is the progression of their violence always predictable. But they have found that batterers tend to fall into one of two categories, which they call "Pit Bulls" and "Cobras." Pit Bulls, men whose emotions quickly boil over, are driven by deep insecurity and an unhealthy dependence on the mates whom they abuse. Pit Bulls also tend to become stalkers, unable to let go of relationships that have ended.

Cobras, on the other hand, are cool and methodical as they inflict pain and humiliation on their spouses or lovers; in one chilling discovery, the authors found that during violent arguments and physical beatings the heart rate of Cobras actually declines. Cobras have often been physically or sexually abused themselves, frequently in childhood, and tend to see violence as an unavoidable part of life.

Knowing which type a batterer is can be crucial to gauging whether an abusive relationship is salvageable (Pit Bulls can sometimes be helped through therapy) or whether the situation is beyond repair. Using the stories of several couples in their study, Jacobson and Gottman look at the dynamics of abusive relationships, refuting prevalent myths ("battering often stops on its own" or "battered women could stop the battering by changing their own behavior"). Never underestimating the inherent risk or danger involved, the authors discuss how women in their study group prepared themselves to leave an abusive relationship, where a battered woman can get help, and how she can keep herself safe.

Written with compassion and insight, When Men Batter Women offers invaluable advice and support to women in abusive relationships, as well as to friends, relatives, and caregivers who want to help.

Amazon.com Review
When Men Batter Women: New Insights into Ending Abusive Relationships by Neil Jacobson and John Gottman, is based on a decade of research with more than 200 couples in dangerous relationships. Jacobson and Gottman, professors at the University of Washington, use their work to shatter myths and shed new light on abusive relationships.

They introduce two types of batterers: Cobras and Pit Bulls. The Cobras, the more severely violent of the two, strike swiftly and ferociously, always remaining in control and feeling entitled to whatever they want, whenever they want it. Pit Bulls are more likely to lose control, letting their emotions burn slowly until they explode in anger. The research is brought to life with stories of real couples such as George and Vicky. We see the few months of happiness in their marriage before George's Cobra-like outbursts begin, and witness Vicky's desire to make their failing relationship work.

Research results and advice are woven throughout such accounts of how real people handled their situations. The authors address the many dangers of leaving an abusive spouse and the importance of forming a safety plan before doing so. Jacobson and Gottman do not come to optimistic conclusions about the ability to stop domestic violence or reform abusive men, but they are optimistic about the women. Their studies follow many women such as Vicky who ultimately left and began the difficult and courageous work of converting nightmares into dreams. --Amy Sessler

From Kirkus Reviews
A provocative psychological study of why men batter women and why women take it. For years many battered women have suffered from the misperception that being beaten is somehow their fault. After a 10-year study of 200 couples--60 of whom were studied intensively--psychologists Gottman (Univ. of Washington; Why Marriages Succeed or Fail, 1994, etc.) and Jacobson (Univ. of Washington) squash that myth and others in this revealing book. The uniqueness of their work begins with the methodology itself. The authors videotaped and observed nonviolent arguments of severe batterers and their spouses, and used control groups of nonviolent yet unhappily married couples. They also eliminated some of the subjectivity inherent in analyzing these arguments by hooking up couples to a variety of monitors that measured vital signs, such as heart rate and sweat flow, as they argued. As a result, the authors make a number of important new discoveries, including the delineation of two overall types of batterers. Pit Bulls, as they call one group, are violent because they are incredibly insecure. They fear losing their wives and therefore attempt to control them through physical and emotional abuse. Cobras, on the other hand, resemble the snake for which they are named, which ``becomes quite still and focused just before striking its victim.'' They become internally calm during abuse, as evidenced from the fact that--unlike Pit Bulls, whose heart rates increase while verbally abusing their wives--Cobras' heart rates actually decrease. It is the Cobras, the authors argue, who are the more violent of the two groups. Refreshingly jargon-free, the book ends with specific advice about how our society could better deal with domestic violence and concrete suggestions for women wishing to leave abusive relationships. Since wife-battering has moved to the front of our collective consciousness, this is a useful book that deserves national attention. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Coauthor of "The Myth of Repressed Memory"

The most explosive and yet inspiring book ever written about domestic violence. This book will forever change the way we look at batterers and battered women: for anyone interested in insight into the nature of evil, or the resourcefulness of real heroism, this book is a must. It is the most intimate and lucid description of love gone bad that has ever been written. It is chilling, riveting, and will forever put an end to our ignorance about violence against women.

Writing with respect for battered women's struggles for safety and their courageous survival strategies, Neil Jacobson and John Gottman offer fresh insights about men who batter. Their research jump-starts a new method of examining battering, and the book provides women with thoroughly accessible information to help them analyze their situations. Jacobson and Gottman's study challenges both conventional wisdom and professional assumptions, and will lead to further research about the questions all women want answered about abusive partners: why do they do it, and what will make them stop?

Pepper Schwartz, Ph.D. Author of "Love between Equals and the Gender of Sexuality" The most shocking and absolutely necessary observational study on abusive relationships of this decade. This will change the way the public, partners, and therapists will look at batterers, assess danger, and decide the likelihood of rehabilitation. The book is frightening because it is about violent men, but it is a must read. It has certainly changed my understanding of abusive relationships and how I would tell women to protect themselves.

I Keep Losing Copies to Women Who Say It Saved Their Lives
By P. Hilbish
Several years ago I was lucky enough to chat one on one with Dr. Gottman and left with a signed copy of this book. I treasured it as the book helped save my life, but I've long since gratefully "lost" it to another survivor of domestic violence. Since then I've needed to buy many more copies as the book continues to open the eyes of the battered women I invariably run into. Each time it does, I "lose" another copy of it. To them it had become an invaluable tool and a lifeline in there escape from the hell they were living in. It gave them the necessary insight to see clearly into themselves and what was happening to them. Like them, it helped me enormously and that's why I began to recommend it, and each time I do I see myself in their stunned reactions and awakening to the truth. I'm not a counselor or a professional. I just know that the normal everyday woman can see herself in this book and if it helps her escape then it is invaluable. I never expected that my recommending this book and then "loaning" out my copy would be so helpful to so many women, but it has been. It's a different perspective and one the survivors of abuse can relate to on a fundamental level as it points the way to freedom. I don't search for these women, but I know the distress signals of abuse when I hear them, normally long before anyone sees it. I'll keep buying this book to have on hand when I run into the next woman, and sadly, battering is so prevalent that there is always a next woman. I just gave away my last copy and I think she'll be just fine. Thank you Dr. Gottman and also the late Dr. Jacobsen whose work here keeps his spirit alive. Thank you so much.

Simplistic View of Abusive Men
By Tex
This book provided little insight into abusive men in my opinion. The classifications were weak, and it had the reading quality of a children's book. Other books such as those by Donald Dutton (just to name one!) provide actually substantive information regarding domestic violence. This book should only be purchased after reading all other books concerning domestic and intimate violence; the price of this book is too much for the quality of inforamtion learned.

Brothers: On His Brothers and Brothers in History, by George Howe Colt

From the bestselling National Book Award finalist, a masterful blend of history and memoir featuring the author’s four brothers and iconic brothers in history—the Thoreaus, the Van Goghs, the Kelloggs, the Marx brothers, and the Booths.

George Howe Colt's The Big House is, as the New Yorker said, “full of surprises and contains more than seems possible: a family memoir, a brief history of the Cape, an investigation of nostalgia, a study of class, and a meditation on the privileges and burdens of the past.” Colt’s new book, Brothers, is an equally idiosyncratic and masterful blend of memoir and history featuring both the author’s three brothers and iconic brothers in history—the Booths, the Van Goghs, the Kelloggs, the Marx Brothers, and the Thoreaus.

Colt believes he would be a different man had he not grown up in a family of four brothers. He movingly recounts the adoration, envy, affection, resentment, and compassion in their shifting relationships from childhood through middle age, also rendering a volatile decade in American life: the 1960s. Some of the Colt men now have children; all have found their own paths; all now consider their brothers to be their closest friends.

In alternate chapters, Colt parallels his quest to understand how his own brothers shaped his life with an examination of the rich and complex relationships between iconic brothers in history. He explores how Edwin Booth grew up to become the greatest actor on the nineteenth-century American stage while his younger brother John grew up to assassinate a president. How Will Kellogg worked for his overbearing older brother John Harvey as a subservient yes-man for two decades until he finally broke free and launched the cereal empire that outlasted all his brother’s enterprises. How Vincent van Gogh would never have survived without the financial and emotional support of his younger brother, Theo, in a claustrophobic relationship that both defined and confined them. How Henry David Thoreau’s life was shadowed by the early death of his older brother, John, who haunted and inspired his writing. And how the Marx Brothers collaborated on the screen but competed offstage for women, money, and fame.

Illuminating and affecting, this book will be revelatory for any parent of sons, any sibling, anyone curious about how a man’s life can be molded by his brothers. Colt’s magnificent book is a testament to the abiding power of fraternal love.

From Booklist
“It’s a wonder I didn’t end up with a permanent crick in my neck from literally and figuratively looking up to my older brother,” writes Colt at the beginning of this engaging memoir about a quartet of brothers growing up in suburban Massachusetts. Colt idolized his smart, clever sibling, Harry, and writes with candor about their childhood years. He laments the distance that grew between the two as Harry matured. (Both attended Harvard, and even though their college years overlapped, they rarely saw one another, much to the younger Colt’s chagrin.) The author adored his two younger brothers—Ned, the rebel of the family, and Mark, the baby—but he didn’t feel the same brotherly bond as with Harry. Interspersed with Colt’s personal story are tales of famous (and infamous) brothers in history, including consummate nineteenth-century stage actor Edwin Booth, whose brother John Wilkes assassinated Abraham Lincoln, and the Marx Brothers, brilliant comic collaborators who battled offstage over money, women, and fame. An enjoyable read for members of small and large broods alike. --Allison Block

Review
“A masterful blend of history and memoir…” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“A great book—brilliantly conceived, daringly organized, endlessly fascinating...” (Steve Weinberg The Dallas Morning News)

“Part memoir, part exhaustively researched biography of famous brothers and how they drove each other, loved each other, fought, drove each other crazy, and supported each other through craziness…Insightful and harrowing and funny and stacked with stories.” (Maile Meloy The New Yorker)

“Anyone who’s had the pleasure of reading Colt’s previous, National Book Award-nominated work, The Big House, will know his delicate, detailed, ironically self-mocking way with prose, and his lucid, affectionate fair-mindedness. . .Colt has done a prodigious job of research and synthesis, and his skill at storytelling is such that each of them is transformed into something fresh, dramatic, and emotionally piercing.” (Phillip Lopate The New York Times Book Review)

“Colt writes movingly and insightfully about how the mercurial fraternal relationships can so quickly move from loving idolatry to hands-around-the-throat…This is one fine book, both wildly entertaining and utterly thought-provoking.” (Richard C. Morais Barron's)

“Vivid and psychologically revealing…” (Edward Morris Bookpage)

“Detailed considerations…of well-known brothers and cameo references to many others, famous and not so, help Colt in his quest to explain the mystery of how siblings can be so different from one another.” (Madeleine Blais The Chicago Tribune)

“Colt elegantly captures the complicated dynamics between brothers that both bind and define them, as well as the evolving relationships between his own brothers as they move into middle age.” (Parade)

“Colt is an acute observer and sensitive chronicler of male emotion…Searingly poignant.” (Kate Tuttle Boston Globe)

“Colt’s fine writing, extensive research, and thoughtful analysis make Brothers a meaty, pleasurable read.” (Deb Baker The Concord Monitor)

“The brotherly counterpoint between fierce rivalry and stalwart affection is teased out in this absorbing meditation on family dynamics…No one writers better than Colt about families and the strange alchemy that binds them, and the way siblings make each other what they are even as they become distinct, even estranged, personalities.” (Publishers Weekly)

“An enjoyable read for members of small and large broods alike…” (Allison Block Booklist)

“The second of four brothers, [Colt] perceptively explores his fraught relationship with them—the competitiveness and conflicts, the yearning for a closeness that would not come until several decades had passed—in the context of an often wistful memoir of an…American family in the 1950s and ‘60s.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“As soon as I started reading Brothers, I found myself talking about it to everyone I saw. You will want to give it to people in your life. George Howe Colt is a master at balancing the personal and the universal, and the book makes a powerful case for sibling rivalry—and love—as a driving force not just in individual lives but in the world.” —Maile Meloy, author of Both Ways Is the Only Way I Want It and Liars and Saints

“A master craftsman of literary nonfiction, George Howe Colt brilliantly conjoins history and memoir, insight and humor—not to mention Cain and Abel, Groucho and Harpo. Every page of this book is a pleasure.”—Adam Goodheart, author of 1861: The Civil War Awakening

"A captivating blend of historical anecdote, personal revelation, and psychological insight, this lively and imaginative book will serve up a great deal of wisdom (and just as much fun) to anyone who has ever been a brother or had a brother. In fact, maybe all you have to do to derive pleasure and nourishment from Colt's book is simply to have once met a brother—it’s that appealing."—Daniel Okrent, author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition

Entertaining and informative

A good read that helped me understand why my grandsons tick (and fight). I found it interesting to find out the "brothers" concept involved in the assasination of Lincoln. I enjoyed learning of the celebrities and artists and authors but most of all, I loved getting to know this family through the author's description and feelings changed throughout their lives.

Excellent read, very thought-provoking
By David A. Bryant
Just finished this and thoroughly enjoyed it! Very well written. As someone who has no brother, only sisters, i had not ever spent too much time thinking about what it would be like to have one. i was vaguely aware that the experience of growing up would have been different if i had had a brother, but did not understand or appreciate the power of such circumstances. the book has mini-biographies on many famous brothers from history, and those are revealing and fascinating as well. The author's research must have been daunting -- it is as if he wrote several books. I liked the way he interwove the development of his own family relationships with the stories of the other brothers from history. Fascinating!
i highly recommended this book. Second book i have read by this author, and i enjoyed this one even more than the first.

Fascinating

I love non-fiction, personal stories, and this one gives great insight into the author's brothers and famous brothers throughout history. I grew up in the same era as the author, and can relate to many of the TV shows and various products, etc that he mentions in the book. I also loved The Big House, about the author's family's summer home (on Cape Cod?) Style of writing is very unique. Sometimes a bit too much detail is included for my taste but overall, I love the book.

Chapter 1
I Love You and I Love Myself

Do I have any idea what kind of relationship I need?

Am I prepared for true love?

Have I dreamed of the possibility of finding a perfectly harmonious relationship?

Do I dare to live out this dream?

Do I know my personality, what I can and cannot give, and that which I need to receive in order for the relationship to work?

While asking myself these questions, I can learn the answers that flow straight from my heart.

The Mystery of Love

No other human activity is initiated with such powerful hopes and expectations as an amorous relationship. This is true even for those who have failed or encountered obstacles with other relationships. At the start of a new relationship, the enthusiasm of gambling on love is always renewed. And, unlike most of life's activities, falling in love is not something we can plan ahead of time. It just happens.

It also happens sometimes without our realizing it. We may find ourselves involved in a relationship and asking ourselves, "How did I get here?" Then we realize that the words I love you have escaped our hearts and our lips. Then we ask, "What now?"

Every human being goes through this, in some way at some point. It's that marvelous aspect of love and relationships that cannot be controlled as other activities can. And this is why so many questions arise after we hear ourselves affirm our love.

Love is the path that guides us to a life of abundance and perfection. This is the first thing we need to understand about love, which leads us to the fact that a relationship is always in a state of renewal, even when we are relating to ourselves. It is important that we reflect daily that when we are in a relationship we must always remain open to newness.

A romantic relationship is a continuous exchange of emotions, ideas, opinions, wills, beliefs, actions, reactions, vibrations, thoughts and objectives between two people. The foundation for happiness is set when this exchange is positive and balanced. Through it, love can be rediscovered and shared by way of trust, understanding, gentleness, union and acceptance.

Should There Be a School for Love?

I have always said that nobody has educated us on how to love. Religions across the ages, without a doubt, have had some say in the matter, yet conflicts, divorces and problems seem to increase more and more each day.

Questions about love are endless: Can one learn to love? Are we capable of loving more than one person? How many relationships should we have before deciding which will be "the one"? Can we really love someone all of our lives? Are there universal ideas regarding love or does everything depend upon the culture in which we were raised? Do we generally only place value on learning things that can bring us money or prestige? How many times have we mistaken passion for love? I could go on and on asking questions. This book could become a dictionary of questions. Let us each begin to think about creating a school for love that will unify all human beings from anywhere on the planet.

Among the many answers I have found, I believe that love is the most beautiful and simple art in life. Love, as any art, is learned. In fact, the desire to efficiently and consciously solidify a relationship is an act of maturity. This process, when carried out by both members of the relationship, is splendid and very gratifying for the couple on the material, emotional, mental and spiritual levels. If we wish to learn how to love, we must proceed in the same way we would to master anything else.

Love benefits every level of our existence. It nurtures and sustains every act and situation that we go through in our lives. Thanks to this, it is life's central theme and the primary area on which we have to focus our energies. Yes, whether we want to admit it or not, all of us will fall in love at some point in our lives. We may feel lost while navigating this wondrous art because for this, the most interesting of all human activities, there is no school.

Every relationship that we undertake in life helps us grow, be it through painful or pleasant experiences. Not all relationships work out, but all pass through our lives for some special purpose. Every time we need to learn something, we attract people who will help us find the answers. Only that one specific experience or that one particular relationship holds the key to teaching us the true answer.

Our relationships act as a mirror of our inner selves. That is why we have to take the following motto into account: "That which I love in others is me. That which I reject in others is also me."

We have the power to accept, modify and grow from any virtue or defect we encounter in ourselves. We can also carry out this same process in relationships, to deepen our love and trust for both ourselves and our significant other.

That which bonds us to another person is based on thoughts, beliefs, judgments and emotions. If we have a negative experience with someone and don't forgive him or her, we relate negatively to that person and remain negatively bound to our own emotions and thoughts. Later we may find that we end up repeating the same experience with somebody else.

If we remember the example of the mirror, we can change our view of the world and our own relationships. We can apply the law of attraction to find that special person who will correspond perfectly with our own feelings and thoughts. We assume responsibility for our relationships and therefore we control the destiny of each one.

Once we have clarity on what we want for ourselves, we can relate to others in a unique, stable, harmonious and magnificent way. But everything depends on our inner reality, which consists of our emotions, desires and thoughts. Because thoughts are creative, they create everything around us, especially those things that they focus on and comprehend. Sometimes it happens consciously, but in most cases, it is an unconscious process. If we want to change our world and our relationships, we must simply begin by changing our thoughts.

The Inner Mirror

In order to properly carry out this visualization exercise, find a quiet spot, relax your body and quiet your thoughts. Imagine a large white screen with a giant mirror in your mind. In that mirror, reflect the image of your significant other or the person for whom you feel an attraction. Once you can clearly see this picture, project onto the image everything that you love about that other person, and everything that causes conflicts for you in the relationship.

When you see something in your partner's behavior that has upset you, stop for a moment to think about what exactly has upset you. Once your ideas are clear, explain them to your partner, as though the mirror were a scene from real life. Once you've clearly identified that annoying defect or behavior in your partner, you'll realize that it is also a defect or behavioral pattern that you reject in yourself.

The more you practice this exercise the more you will realize that love is just like this mirror. The universe that we create around ourselves depends upon the way we see things. And this is without a doubt the result of our vision of love.

The most important thing to consider before entering into any relationship is your first love: the love that you feel for yourself.

Liberating Ourselves from False Mirrors and Relationships

This next exercise helps us to understand how we cling to the images that others have of us, and how important it is to love ourselves unconditionally. This visualization will connect you with the false image that you have of yourself, and will lead you to appreciate yourself more.

Visualize a great gallery filled with corridors. Walk until you come to a room in which the walls are totally covered by mirrors of different sizes and shapes. Take your time observing how you feel. Stop in front of the mirror that you most identify with. Note which one you choose, because every aspect of yourself that you discover while you're being reflected in your inner mirror is part of you. These may be familiar to you, or they may not be; for example, you may observe that the person in the mirror is passive, emotionless and very still, yet you consider yourself active and emotionally open to your partner. It's possible that you don't accept these hidden aspects of your personality as a true part of yourself. It is possible, then, that you may be bothered by these qualities in others, or that you attract people into your life that seem like they don't offer enough. It's important for you to relate to these inner parts of yourself, understand them and try to identify what they need. Create an inner dialogue that will allow you to know these aspects more fully, until you no longer find yourself rejecting these characteristics in yourself. If you can accept every aspect of your inner self, your relationship with your partner will be more harmonious.

Focus your attention on the living brilliance of your eyes, and notice how beautiful they are. Realize that they are the reflection of your soul, always radiating inside you. Feel how your soul needs to love you. As you vibrate with that love and splendor, you will realize how important you are to yourself -- so much so that you may no longer need approval or validation from others.

When we feel affection, respect and conscious acceptance of ourselves, this will be reflected in our bodies and we will transmit this loving energy to the world around us. Learning to think positively about yourself is directly connected to knowing yourself, identifying your qualities and flaws, and accepting yourself so that you can positively transform your life.

People who love themselves are genuinely ready to begin a relationship. They manage their emotions and inner issues intelligently. For example, they

  • Maintain a calm attitude in the face of stimuli.
  • Lean on their partners and allow the other to rely on them, without creating dependence....

Paths Down the Road to Fulfillment
By Mark Woodland
"I Love You Now What? is a lovely book that explores processes and techniques towards creating and maintaining a loving and complete relationship over time. I found this to be particularly relevant after having been married for 26 years, and looking ahead to staying in this relationship for the rest of my life (which is one of the chapters). Mabel Iam shows a real sensitivity and awareness of what makes love work, and addresses it in a warm, beautiful and inviting style that makes the book very pleasant to read. It's divided into two major sections: The first takes a look at building and strengthening love, and the second focuses on sexuality and its part in maintaining love. All of them are broken down into very specific parts that address issues in relationships and techniques. This is a very helpful and beautifully written book, and I'm looking forward to putting it into active use in my life. I'd recommend it to anyone who's in love or wants to be. It will reinforce the things you've done right, point you in new directions and pathways in critical stages of a relationship, and it touches on things you might never have really considered. I'm glad I read it, and you will be, too.

Best book ever!
By KEB
I have read many relationship books, but this is the first one that has really helped me.

I had a difficult home life growing up, and the wounds followed me into my adult life. When I got into relationships I was placing high demands on my partners to fulfill all my emotional needs and make me happy.

Consequently, I still was not happy and my partners suffered too.

I was relieved to find out that "I" was the one that could make me happy, and in order to achieve that happiness "I" needed to grow both spiritually and emotionally.

It's a great book and I think everyone would benefit from reading it, whether they are currently in a relationship or not.

From Publishers Weekly
A hard-working San Diego accountant changes his station in life in Tyree's overlong, phoned-in latest. After Ivan David is embarrassingly denied entrance to a hip, downtown party, he goes home and dreams of becoming a big-time party promoter. Then he gets to work on pursuing that dream, and good things happen. His first party is a hit, and he hooks up with Lucina Gallo, who has a ton of great connections. As bigger and bigger money flows in, Ivan and Lucina experience their share of growing pains. Things work out and Ivan makes a pile of money, but readers may find themselves wondering after several hundred pages what the point is. (Sept.)

From Booklist
When 28-year-old Ivan David’s mother died after a long fight with cancer, it liberated him to really think about his future beyond the staid accounting firm where he worked. He felt some guilt that he hadn’t been with his mother at the end, but she’d always told him she wanted him to get on with his life. And that’s exactly what he does—starting a party service with an Internet connection, ID Promotions, to keep San Diego residents abreast of the lively interracial nightlife. Lucina Gallo, a stunning Italian Brazilian woman, with her own well-earned reputation as a party sponsor, teams with Ivan to dream up ever more fabulous productions featuring local athletes and national music stars. All the while, Lucina worries that Ivan will be like her previous partners, who allowed their egos to destroy the partnership. And then there is the matter of the sexual tension between the two of them. Tyree offers plenty of celebrity name-dropping and Internet business planning in this novel about finding the balance between ambition and love. --Vanessa Bush

Tedious and pointless
By David H. Birley
Seems to me that I recall somewhere in the far distant past that for a story to be a good story it needs to have a core structure of conflict and resolution. The problem with "Pecking Order" is that it lacks both.

Now a disclaimer. I am a white senior citizen male. I did not grow up in the United States. I am not familiar with the "Hip-Hop" lifestyle, nor with any of the audio sounds associated with it that are presented as "music". In addition, although I have seen the name "Dr. Dre" somewhere in the news sometime in the past year, the other performers of that form of "entertainment" have names I have never heard before. Regardless, because of the presence of Dr. Dre's name, I suspect that the others named are not all fictional either.

What bothers me most about this book is that there is an offensive perception, that I have observed around me from time to time, of the African American male as a person with no interest in anything less than narcissistic self promotion and promiscuous sexual liasions with no depth nor future. This book carries that image forward in painful detail. Listings of the wardrobes of every new character who shows up on the scene. The protagonist (Ivan David -- now there's a recognizeably African American name, right?) agonizes over which color of jacket and shirt to wear, and whether to install a diamond ear stud.

The women (at least in the first 300 pages -- I just gave up after that) are presented as either sex objects, potential sex objects, or unlikely sex objects. The narrative is "relieved" a couple of times by unnecessarily detailed descriptions of sexual encounters, including a presentation of the scene in such a way to show that these are "throw away" partners.

The only conflicts that have appeared are whether a particular female will become a sexual partner tonight. The only resolutions of these "conflicts" is the telling of which one is the "score".

As for the ridiculous ascention from $60K hack accountant to millionaire party, show, and real estate promoter in about a single year (thanks, I suppose, to the assistance of the Beautiful -- they're all beautiful -- Brazilian "Partner" and promoter with her string of "girls" -- who are carefully presented not to be "hookers") too far fetched even for the Brothers Grimm.

If you have the opportunity to pass this one up, grab the opportunity with both hands. This one is going into my recycling bin!

Mr. Tyree has done better...
By T. Mathews
I was not too pleased with this book. It took me too many tries to get started and too much efffort to get through it. I ususally buy books but thankfully I checked this one out from the library but had to pay overdue fees because it took me so long to finish it.

I thought the rise of Ivan was very fast although I did appreciate his hustle. The story had too much math, and like another reviewer said, I was bored to death with all of the details. I also was expecting some sort of "fall" or other humbling experience to put his huge ego in check. Confidence is one thing but arrogance is another. (I don't fault the writer for the character's arrogance though. Maybe he was supposed to be that way.)

I haven't decided yet whether or not I'm offended by the fact that black women were not suitable 'dating' options for Ivan... I believe you love who you love but something about the women chosen, described and written about in this book turned me off. I thought the whole thing about the model in New York was out of place and could have been left out, but I'm not an editor!

I like to read other people's reviews on Amazon but I'm surprised there aren't that many here yet. In any case and in spite of this book, I will continue to read Omar Tyree. I've been with him from book #1 and while I haven't enjoyed all of them, I'm always anxious to see what he brings.

This is a very unusual book.....
By D. Wilhite
Okay, what can I say about this book? I had high hopes when I heard that an author of the caliber of Omar Tyree was actually writing a book about the world of the "Urban Upscale Event" planners. Unfortunately, something was missing for me with this book. It has its good and bad elements, but the bad seems to outweigh the good. As for the good:

* The book tackles a subject rarely covered in fiction...the world of urban upscale event/party planners. As a veteran of the legendary "Petey" parties in Atlanta and the Marc Barnes gigs in the DC area, I was curious as to how the story of a fictionalized party planner would be presented.

* The book is a literal primer on how to start your own business and the kind of drive and savvy it would take to make it a success. I definitely read with interest the way Ivan negotiated deals, handled employees, marketed his business, how he created marketing tie-ins, how he decided on partners, how he used the Internet and his Website, how he conducted business meetings, and how he handled the money. The way he parlayed his promotion business into increased success in his day job was absolutely masterful and makes the book worth picking up.

* It was good to see a book showing a young college-educated Black man getting his "hustle on", making money, and being successful.

Unfortunately, there's the bad:

* None of the lead characters are even remotely likable. I had hoped that Ivan David would be similar to the main character of "A Do Right Man", but I'm afraid Ivan came across as a little too full of himself to be likable at all, especially as he grew more successful.

* Ivan had absolutely no game when it came to women. I literally cringed at some of the dialogue he used on the women in the book. It was real high school stuff. His main way to seduce women seemed to be "I'm Ivan David, big time party promoter, so you should want to sleep with me." I was hoping Ivan would have been similar to Benilde Little's immensely likable but doggish investment banker Miles Browning, but Ivan had neither the game nor charm to come across as that entertaining to this reader. Just because a Black man is professionally successful and dates quite a few ladies does not mean he has to be presented as a jerk.

* There were no likable romantic attachments for the main character in this book. The mysterious Lucina seemed to have no personality outside of her stunning good looks (and Brazilian women can be gorgeous!). Another female character had the nerve to ask a man to fund her education after sleeping with him a couple of times, and acted a fool when she turned him down. What a loon. Ivan's old college girlfriend came across as desperate and clingy. The daughter of the Black restaurant owner seemed pretty interesting, but again, Ivan didn't have enough game to keep her in play.

* Where was the compelling story? Where was the drama that would keep a reader turning the page? If I wasn't into the business lessons in the book and fascinated by the fact that someone actually wrote a book about the world of "urban upscale events", it would have held no interest for me at all.

* It did seem a little inconceivable that Ivan could rise so far so fast as a promoter. It usually takes a few years to establish a reputation as an event planner to the point where people will actually want to come out to your events in mass and pay good money to attend. Don't get me wrong....Ivan definitely handled his business and used some great marketing techniques, and his partnering with an established promoter definitely did help. But things still seemed to move a little too quickly to be believable.

I suppose the bottom line is this. If you're looking for a book with a great story or one with compelling characters, I can't recommend this book for you. However, if you've started or are thinking about starting your own business, this just might just be a good book to check out for ideas and motivation.
