A Spade is a Spade

I was hesitant to post a review of Downtown Owl, because I'm somewhat partial to the works of the author. I've loved all of Klosterman's books, and have always thought that his essays deserve their place alongside the finer works of the past ten years. However, if no one else is going to say it, I will--this book was simply okay. For a first stab at fiction, I would say it was just `good.'

People--myself included--are fast to rave about Klosterman's work, and one previous review even said that the writer `wouldn't have known it was Klosterman had the name not been listed on the cover. Really? The mentioning of obscure eighties rock songs, deep debate over the creative merits of the Rolling Stones, and Black Sabbath/heavy metal references didn't remind you of any certain author's favorite topics? To me it was obvious, but I confess that it didn't bother me. That's who Klosterman is and it's natural to think that some of his music essay writings would bleed into his fictional work. In my opinion, it doesn't discredit the work at all--in fact I welcome it--but to say it doesn't exist is ridiculous.

Downtown Owl's most powerful feature may be Klosterman's characters and their introspective dialogue. Such self-reflective accounts allow readers to develop a connection to each one, even if they are have nothing in common. Also, the pace of the book--though this may be idiotic to say--sort of mirrors the pace of life in small towns like Owl. Life moves a bit slower there, and the pace of the book stays congruent with that.

The main flaw of the book, in my opinion, is the latter part of the book where the storm begins to move in. Mitch, for example, is blown backwards--with apparently no idea of what just hit him. I feared it might be a supernatural force or an atomic bomb, only to find out . . it's a storm? I'm not familiar with weather patterns in North Dakota, but most storms I've witnessed can be seen at least a minute or two in advance. The speed at which the fierce weather enters, surrounds, and confines the characters is beyond unrealistic, and comes across as if (a) the author grew tired of writing or (b) his car was double parked while scratching out the last few chapters.

Overall, it's a good book. And yes, I liked it. But let's just leave it at that, and not inflate the book's significance or gravity just because we are so used to the author's previous--and more superior--pieces of work.

Stunning. More than 5 stars

This review is of the unabridged audio CD of the novel.

If I could give this book & the audio production more than 5 stars, I would. I don't know if it resonated so strongly with me because I grew up in a town not much larger than Owl. I don't know if the author was trying to make social commentary about life in rural small towns or human nature. All I know is that I started the final disc in my car on the way to a party an hour's drive out into the country and was so absorbed by and emotionally involved in the unfolding events that I worried I'd arrive before the book was done. Then I'd have to decide whether or not to sit in the car and finish the book as my friends waited inside.

The audio production is excellent. The story is told through the lives of several residents of Owl. The three main characters, Mitch Hrlicka (a high school junior), Julia Rabia (a young schoolteacher new to Owl), and Horace Jones (a 73-year old widower and lifelong resident of Owl). Each of these characters has its own narrator. This is one of the best aspects of the production. The different narrators make it easier for the listener to remember whose chapter it is and, more importantly, to connect with the character as a person. The voices seemed to suit the characters very well. At first I was annoyed by the Horace narrator's voice because his reading was very sibilant, much like an old preacher I had whose teeth didn't fit well. After a while, I realized that voice fit Horace perfectly. A couple other people have small sections either narrated by different people or by one of the other narrators using a different vocal inflection. The author also reads some parts.

The book starts with a news clipping about a blizzard in early February, 1984. (An actual blizzard, which explains why the author chose to set the story in 1983-84.) But the story unfolds starting at the beginning of the school year in 1983 and paints a picture of the daily lives of the three main characters and the others in their social spheres. The details of everyday life in Owl are fairly mundane but the gradual accumulation made me care about Mitch, Julia and Horace. The author blends in real life events such as references to Gordon Kahl, a former North Dakota resident who shot federal agents trying to arrest him for tax evasion. After several disks, I had all but forgotten the blizzard noted at the beginning of the book.

The author has a sly sense of humor and a talented way with words. One of Horace's coffee drinking buddies is named Marvin Windows, which is the name of a large window manufacturer near the Minnesota/North Dakota border. And many of his descriptions of Owl and daily life there made me laugh out loud

The end of the book was simply stunning. I don't want to give anything away, but the blizzard I had nearly forgotten stikes suddenly and terrifyingly. If I had been reading a paper copy of the book, I would have been turning the pages as fast as I could read and trying not to flip ahead to the end to see what happened.

This was one of the best audio books I've listened to for a long time. If you enjoy audio books, I highly recommend this one. If you prefer your books in print or Kindle, get it that way. But whatever you do, read this book.

The Klosterman Blizzard

Guess what? Chuck Klosterman wrote a novel and it's good and it's nothing like his non-fiction pop culture essays. In fact, were I given the book not knowing the author, I would never have guessed.

After I saw an advertisement for a Klosterman event calling him "the next Hunter S. Thompson," I got very upset because, Klosterman, Hunter S. Thompson, you are not. I suddenly had a very irrational hatred for Klosterman. I thought Sex, Drugs, & Cocoa Puffs was pretty good. I didn't always agree with him, but at least when he was wrong, he was entertainingly wrong. Suddenly I hated that book and thought he was incredibly stupid and not very clever at all in retrospect. This novel, Downtown Owl, changed my mind. Klosterman is cool once more.

Downtown Owl reminds me in tone and texture of a Mark Haddon novel or David Mitchell's Black Swan Green. It has the same humor as Franzen's The Corrections with less resolution. Chuck does an amazing job with the small-town Midwest and most amazingly - he somehow writes the early-to-mid 80's without seeming nostalgic or silly or even dated. Chuck displays his encyclopedic knowledge of film and music throughout but manages to make the release of E.T. seem current. The real trick, the real page-turner is that the struggles of his characters are as universal today as they were over twenty years ago. Downtown Owl lacks the rough edges and narrative mistakes of many first novels and rolls heavy with both wit and tragedy.

The one critique I see coming for this novel is that it could be argued that there is a lack of plot. This novel could be Dazed and Confused if that film was spliced with extra narratives, one from a teacher at the school and another from an old man who spends his afternoons talking in a cafe with other elderly farmers. The novel covers August of '83 through February of '84, but it is never more than "This is what happened to these people." One could argue there is no resolution because there were never any conflicts to resolve, and the few that did exist were sidestepped.

Ultimately, this comes down to the question, "Is it the journey or the destination?" Your enjoyment of this book may very well depend on your answer.

About the Author
Kirbyjon H. Caldwell is the pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church in Houston, spiritual home to more than 15,500 members. Imagine yourself in a house of worship, doesn't matter which denomination or whether it is affiliated with a denomination at all. Just imagine some holy place, bathed in sunlight on some flawless Sunday morning. Things begin slowly before gradually rising in a crescendo. You watch the choir setting up, the congregation filing in, the background noise of muffled conversation, shuffling prayer-book pages, and building anticipation. Then the pastor or any other variety of clergy walks onto the pulpit. Strictly for the purpose of this daydream, allow that person to be me, Kirbyjon H. Caldwell, pastor of Windsor Village United Methodist Church, in Houston, Texas, one of the fastest-growing Churches in America.

"Good morning," I begin. "Thanks for coming. We have come here to praise the Lord."

The words serve as a cue for a mighty choir behind me, a ninety-member vocal cyclone whose voices rise up in sweet tones of exultation, singing, "We've come to praise Him!"

But I'm not here strictly for praise. I'm here to talk about some bone-deep, dead-serious truth. Not truth about the world of the hereafter, but an entrepreneurial gospel of how you can maximize your God-given potential in the here-and-now. I'm here to help you identify the Faith within you that, once nourished, can rocket your life to new levels of empowerment and good success.

You might do a double take when you first see me in the pulpit. Because I don't preach in some regal vestment, not even a suit or a tie. I'm wearing a casual shirt and slacks. Expensive clothes are not a prerequisite to celebrating the Holy Spirit's presence at the church that you have just entered. We're here for empowerment, not posing. Any social barriers that might prevent people from feeling comfortable are barred at our door. I hope you've dressed casually too. Because now I'm directing 100 percent of my energy upon you.

Yes, you. Maybe you want a little more out of life -- or maybe you want a whole lot more. Maybe you're seeking a more joyful life, a more satisfying career, deeper relationships, more money in the bank, better parenting skills, a more solid spiritual connection, a more healthy body, and a more muscular mental resolve. Or maybe your needs go deeper. Maybe you're sick, lonely, battling addictions, frustrated, suffering disease, battling low self-esteem, adrift in life. But if you're thinking God simply offers some pie-in-the-sky Sunday religious promise without regard to the realities of a Stormy Monday, you are about to discover a whole new world!

After all, you are a V.I.P. Like any normal person, you're seeking answers to three of life's most basic questions:

Value: What am I doing with my life that makes a difference?

Identity: Who am I?

Purpose: Why am I here?

Suddenly, the sunlight explodes through those stained-glass windows, the choir lifts its collective voice in awesome exultation, and you've found yourself in the midst of a miracle.

"We've come to praise Him!" sings the choir, clapping hands and swaying back and forth, a force of ninety people all pointing their fingers directly at you.

Then a light shines down from heaven and you hear some startlingly good news: God wants you to be successful! God has literally laid all the bountiful gifts of the universe at your feet...and I'm not just talking about the traditional concept of spiritual blessings but redemption in every aspect of your existence: your emotions, entrepreneurship, career, finances, relationships, health, parenting skills, academic career, and more. You have been given the promise of a successful and absolutely abundant life, but you must stand up, claim it, and develop a strategy to attain it.

You're on your feet now, arms in the air, running down the aisle like somebody who's won the lottery or picked the right door on a TV game show. The people who matter most in your life -- your husband or wife, mother and father, children, friends, and associates -- are gathered around you, hugging you, congratulating you, wishing you well.

You have become whole in every aspect of your existence.

You have entered the place of Holistic Salvation, with special emphasis on that first syllable. Whole. In this place, there is no such thing as a halfway God -- or a partial person. Here, God doesn't restrict His grace to your soul, but watches over every aspect of your well being. God doesn't bless you on Sunday, then turn a blind eye the moment you step into the streets. God's Salvation is available every day of the week.

All of the pieces of your life -- your financial, emotional, relational, professional, physical, and spiritual pieces -- will be in sync, not as pieces of some convoluted puzzle but as pieces fitting harmoniously together as a whole. You will be complete -- ready, willing, and able to realize God's optimal plan for your future.

You might think the scenario presented above is a fantasy, but I've seen it happen over and over again at Windsor Village, where our worship celebrations are just as likely to end with a prayer for blessed social relationships or economic opportunities as with spiritual redemption. There is, however, one caveat: God is not a game-show host. God doesn't always offer instant gratification. God sets up a road to success, to Holistic Salvation, a road that can have as many ups and downs as a roller coaster, and only those willing to make the sacrifices of the journey enter the place where all your dreams line up with God's purpose for your life, whether it's an emotional state, a financial condition, or a spiritual transformation.

At Windsor Village, we don't just preach about Holistic Salvation; we practice it daily. We're a lean, mean Kingdom-building machine, with over 120 "ministries," serving the community seven days a week. There are ministries for everything from job placement and financial planning to weight loss and alcohol rehabilitation, ministries for everything that will help somebody step out of the herd and become a leader of his or her own life.

The story of Windsor Village is prayer coupled with action, and proof of the incredible power of this combination stands one mile from our church: The Power Center, the name of our 24-acre, 104,000-square-foot, multiuse, business complex designed to address the multifaceted needs of our community. The Power Center is our Church's physical manifestation of Holistic Salvation: We actually "salvaged" an abandoned Kmart building and auto-supply store and turned it into a reservoir of empowerment, serving the community's needs culturally, economically, educationally, emotionally, medically, socially, and spiritually. The Power Center houses a private school, the Imani School, a University of Texas Science Center-Memorial Hermann Hospital health clinic, a Chase Bank of Texas branch office, a Houston Community College business technology center, a Woman-Infant-Children's (W.I.C.) center, which aids approximately 6,000 women and children each month, and a full complement of executive suites, individual businesses, the fourth-largest conference center/meeting facility in the city, and much, much more. The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, the BBC, NBC-TV, and other media have hailed The Power Center as an entrepreneurial incarnation of the twenty-first-century Church. We got the idea from Wal-Mart, a mega-market with everything under one roof.

Over the next few years, The Power Center will pump about $30 million into the local economy. It has already added 275 new jobs to the community. Most important, it meets the diverse needs of our community inside one building, bringing together the diverse pieces of life that we once had to go to dozens of places to find -- which, in an important sense, is the essence of Holistic Salvation.

Great book! This is not a name it and claim it prosperity self help book. What it is, is a road map with mile posts and directions on how to travel down the unique path G-d has for each of us. Very well written with actionable steps and engaging stories demonstrating those steps.

Sunday in the Kitchen with Claude

"Monet's Table" is a gorgeous exploration of everyday life in the Impressionist household. While Claude Monet revolutionized art, his cuisine at Giverny incorporated the everyday pleasures of Normandy. There are classic dishes like Coquilles St. Jacques and foie gras, but there are also stuffed onions and broth. Claude Monet even kept cooking journals. This is a discovery for those who have only seen his artwork. (I'd also recommend "Frida's Feasts" about the cuisine of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo) Monet put as much work into his cooking as he did his painting. The kitchen was also his canvas. Bon appetit!

This is the most spectacular cook book I have ever seen, splashed with the colours of Monet's house and gardens, garnished with photos of the foods served therein. I wish I had his kitchen stove - it looks as though it provides 24 square feet of cooking surface. Biographical notes put it all into historical and human perspective; and to top it all off ... the recipes. Ah, the recipes, all placed before us in modern terms that make these wondrous foods perfectly doable. After reading 'Monet's Table' and trying out the mussels in herbs, I bought three more copies to send to my closest foodie friends.

Not a tell-all. A real exploration of addictive 'love'

I have known Susan Cheever - not well, but just enough to like her and be glad to see her --- for almost thirty years. We met when I was writing a New York Times Magazine profile of her father. I loved those stories, and, because I was young and naive, I did not grasp that the man who wrote them might also have invented himself. My John Cheever was a recovering alcoholic who lived in the country with a classy wife, dogs, wood fires --- the whole country squire bit.

What I did not know about John Cheever --- and what he very much feared I did --- was that he was bi-sexual, probably leaning more toward gay. Had I known this, I would never have written it, nor would the Times have published it. This was 1979, when gays were beautiful young men in discos.

Secrets run in families. Susan Cheever struck me as a talented young writer; like any number of children of the famous and troubled, she seemed to want nothing more than to do her work and have a quiet life. It seemed absolutely right that she would write a biography of Bill Wilson, the father of Alcoholics Anonymous, the program that saved her father. And I'd admire anyone who could write a book called "American Bloomsbury: Louisa May Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau".

So it was quite a surprise to open 'Desire'and discover this was more than a smart third-person exploration of sexual addiction. It's also a first-person account of four decades of personal trouble. Susan Cheever's parents had told her she was unattractive and would have a hard time finding a husband. She found three --- and countless lovers. "Whenever there was a crisis," she writes, "I found a man to help me take the edge off the feelings of helplessness and pain."

But if you're looking for a lurid tale of hotel rooms and low times, you'll be disappointed by this brief --- 169-page --- book. Cheever's problem is a launch-point, not an opportunity to bleed on paper. Right at the beginning, she states her goal:

This is a book that explores the boundaries between the kind of love on which a life can be built, and the passionate kind of love that is an addiction.... The most familiar addictions in the world we live in are addictions to alcohol and drugs. Unlike those addictions, the addictions which use people as a substance are often hidden behind our ideas about love.

Addiction to people, she notes, is not like other addictions. No one praises addiction to alcohol and drugs --- but who says love is a bad thing? Especially falling in love, when the world seems fresh and life looks thrilling. But at the end of the day, she says, we must ask ourselves: Is addiction to "love" really different from the chemical addictions?

Cheever has read a lot, and she has the great journalist's ability to find the right quote and telling statistic. In these pages, you'll learn that a study found that "more than half of cocaine users had sexual compulsion problems." That men who abuse substances and women who starve themselves just might have the same addiction. And that Bill Wilson, founder of AA, wasn't free from addictions after he stopped drinking; he was a philanderer.

In form, this book may seem to veer from memoir to academia. The through-line? It's all fascinating. And provocative. It helps that Cheever is a sharp, colorful writer: "Adultery is the drunk driving of sex addiction." And that she has a clear take on the dimensions of the problem: "Many addictions primarily cause pain to the addict. Sex addiction causes a huge amount of collateral damage. In fact, collateral damage sometimes seems to be its primary result."

What makes "Desire" important even for readers who don't think sex addiction is their issue is that it expands it focus to include all addiction. See if this idea resonates. It's from Samuel Johnson, the dictionary maker and essayist: "He who makes a beast of himself at least rids himself of the pain of being a man." Yes, and also the pain of being a woman.

Exploring Desire and Addiction

Susan Cheever is most often mentioned as the daughter of literary great, John Cheever. However, with this book she has entered a new arena of her own. With this book, Susan has presented us with a novel that explains that sex addiction should be treated not as a failure of morality or character but as a disease of brain biochemistry resulting from a combination of genetics and life events. This is a groundbreaking effort and one that is a great read.

In 'Desire: Where Sex Meets Addiction' Susan Cheever has given us an entrance into the world of all addicts and what it means to be addicted. In the end, she says," there are no easy answers. A straight look about some crooked feelings. Desire shows us the difference between the addiction that cripples our emotions, and healthy, empowering love that enhances our lives."

In this book, we learn that Susan has been an alcoholic and a sex addict. She has detailed the conversations she had with experts in neuroscience and psychology of addictive behavior. People who are addicted to alcohol, sex and drugs share common traits. Some sort of "otherworldly suspension of will" comes over addicts, and they cannot stop themselves nor do they understand at the moment the will is not there. In fact many addicts are attracted to more than one agent. Many alcoholics smoke. Food addicts who have gained so much weight they need gastric by-pass surgery, find that after losing weight they may turn to gambling, or alcohol or sex. One addiction may lead to another. A person who has a predilection to addiction, may go for years without acting out on that addiction, and then one day, bam, it has started. There is a loss of will from the activation of similar brain pathways no matter what the fix is.

Susan Cheever shares her own story of alcoholism and sex addiction. Her three marriages, her affairs, the stories behind the stories. She also shares many stories of friends or acquaintances to provide us with a basic understanding of the humans inside these behaviors. She interviews many behavioral scientists and psychologists. Some have conflicting views and several disagree with Cheever. She dissects the scientists opinions and forms one of her own. Addicts do not have control over their behaviors. They try, but always fail. One addiction may and usually does lead to another. This may be a combination of genetic and life experiences. It leaves me with a feeling of deja vous. These wonderful people in my life have no real control over some of their behaviors and it is not until they come to an understanding and want to change these behaviors that their life may change. No amount of nagging in the world will affect this kind of change. Good to know, is it not? We all hate nags, don't we?

I found this book to be forcefully written. Susan Cheever shares her belief that sex addiction is much more accepted than alcoholism or drugs. "She says, and this is a central theme of the book, that "in our world, addiction to other people -- especially addiction to a sex partner -- is the only addiction that is applauded and embraced." Reflections on infidelity and addiction

The author has written a very personal account concerning the not-well-understood subject of sexual addiction and how it compares with other addictions, namely alcohol, drugs, food, and gambling. The book consists largely of brief interviews with noted addiction scholars, many specializing in sexual addiction, personal accounts of those who destroyed their lives through sexual obsession, and a personal look at various periods of the author's life involving promiscuity, infidelity, and alcohol abuse.

The author amply demonstrates that sexual addicts are given to the behaviors of lying, secretiveness, broken promises, obsessiveness, self-destructiveness, remorse, and the like, much as do other addicts. Likewise, there is evidence that there are genetic predispositions to most addictions, as well as similarities in brain reactions to addictive behaviors and withdrawals across the spectrum of addictions. Though not elaborated, sexual addiction is somewhat unique in that a substance is not involved and the behavior, even copious amounts, is considered normal and essential for life. The propagation of species depends on strong sex drives.

Another factor in naming activities "addictions" is the changing social environment and tolerance for behaviors. At one time in our history, excessive use of tobacco, overeating, and drinking were hardly viewed in the same manner as today. Furthermore, the sting is taken out of the word by its use to describe intense interest in all types of activities.

Sexual addiction is extremely difficult to determine. Multiple sex partners, open marriages, and the like are hardly atypical in modern society. The anonymity of urban life, professions that provide intense contact with numerous patients, clients, etc, access to significant resources, and an open-minded orientation - all of these facilitate an increased variety of sexual experiences. The author, a distinguished writer and mover among high social circles, had far more opportunities for sexual liaisons than the average person. She was unfaithful and undoubtedly was remorseful; however her claims of sexual addiction seem well overstated. She did not target potential victims at every turn - not even close. Perhaps under different marital arrangements, her behavior may well have been tolerated.

The book is an interesting and personal take on sexual addiction. Clearly, sexual addiction does exist with predatory behavior being a large component. Yet it remains an elusive concept. Infatuation, even obsession, is a typical response in many, if not most, courtships. Perhaps it is unrealistic to expect that intensity of feeling to never arise again. And, if so, is a labeling of sexual addiction that informative? There is much more to be said about the subject than is found in this short book. The book is perhaps best read for the author's journey through many marriages and lovers, though all covered in a rather subdued sense.

Andrew Cockburn opens his new book on Donald Rumsfeld by concluding that his subject was an insufferable disaster as secretary of defense, then goes on to provide dozens of anecdotes by way of proof. In this slim volume, we learn that Rumsfeld saved a multi-billion dollar bomber program that was "incapable of performing its mission"; as a businessman with G.D. Searle Co., pushed sugar substitutes through the Food and Drug Administration's approval process even though scientists believed the fake sugar "contributed to several thousand Americans" developing brain cancer; plotted with Dick Cheney to form "a secret government-in-waiting" during war games in hidden bunkers; tolerated levels of opium production in post-Taliban Afghanistan that meant "millions of future heroin addicts"; sanctioned torture at Abu Ghraib; procured tanks that had to wait "by the side of the road for the fuel truck" in Iraq; and ran a "reign of terror over the officer corps."

President Richard M. Nixon is quoted as describing Rumsfeld in March 1971 as "a ruthless little bastard," and reading Cockburn, one can only imagine what his exploits would be like if he had been taller. Hollywood might have cast Rumsfeld as the heavy who brought us global warming and penguin stew.

Page after relentless page, Cockburn hauls Rumsfeld's stewardship onto the dock to flop and expire. The book traces his career from 1962, when he was a young congressman, and jumps back and forth in time to the present day. Cockburn describes Rumsfeld as a bully marred by hubris, a portrait previously drawn in Bob Woodward's State of Denial. His Pentagon meddling antagonized general officers. To run post-Saddam Hussein Iraq, he chose the arrogant L. Paul Bremer, whose failures ensured "the ultimate doom of the American adventure in Iraq." Rumsfeld's dismissive put-downs antagonized the press. And so on.

Cockburn, who has written for major magazines, is right about the enormity of Rumsfeld's failure in Iraq, but the book has fatal flaws. Throughout his jeremiad, Cockburn brandishes not a scalpel but a broadsword, holding both Rumsfeld and the entire U.S. military in contempt. In his opinion, the Pentagon's failure to anticipate the need for heavily armored Humvees in Iraq reflected not human error but an "uncaring and incompetent civilian and military high command." Having accompanied numerous American units in Iraq, I have witnessed our generals extending extraordinary care to their troops.

Cockburn's critique lacks historical perspective about errors in war. After all, the gallant World War II assault against Iwo Jima claimed twice as many American lives in one month as have died in Iraq in four years. But while some historians claim Iwo Jima was a strategic mistake, we still don't damn the leaders of the "greatest generation." Similarly, the one thing the world can take to the bank today is that every American general will stand with his men.

Moreover, Cockburn accuses our soldiers of "immorality," claiming that every Iraqi he met "was utterly convinced that the occupation was intrinsically corrupt" and that "determination to maintain the honor and standards" of the U.S. military "was, unfortunately, all too rare." Rare? Tell that to the Iraqi civilians in Baghdad who routinely ask U.S. patrols for help, trusting our soldiers more than their own forces.

Because Cockburn didn't persuade true insiders to talk, his book lacks in-depth reporting. He doesn't address the central issue of whether Rumsfeld blocked requests to alter course in Iraq or whether there were any such requests. Nor does he explain why Rumsfeld, portrayed as nimble at avoiding blame, stayed at the helm as Iraq drove the Republican Party from power in Congress and divided the country as deeply as had Vietnam. Perhaps Rumsfeld stayed, as he repeatedly said, because he believed that the cause was noble and that the consequences of failure were dire.

Most critics complain that Rumsfeld bullied U.S. military commanders into placing too few "boots on the ground." Cockburn argues, however, that more American soldiers in Iraq would only provoke more opposition and lead to more casualties. Because he views Iraq as insoluble and our institutions as execrable, Cockburn leaves the reader wondering if Rumsfeld's actions made any enduring difference.

Now, more troops are surging into Iraq under a different strategy. Gen. David H. Petraeus, who recently took over as the top U.S. commander in Iraq, is trying to set up the Iraqi government to succeed. It's too early to assess whether the Iraqi imbroglio is a clash of cultures doomed from the start or whether Rumsfeld's decisions were central to a slow failure that can be reversed with him out of office.

Because Cockburn has written with a razor, he has left room for more balanced books. It is doubtful, though, if any will revise his central thesis: Rumsfeld envisioned a quick victory in Iraq and a quick exit. Had he left office after the post-9/11 war in Afghanistan and before the Iraq fiasco, he would have been a national hero. But when the Iraqi insurgency portended a long war, Rumsfeld did not adopt a new strategy. He failed, and he remained too long in his post.

A Brilliant Piece of Work. Essential reading!

[...]. Despite the fact that the author and publisher must have moved heaven and earth to get it published so quickly, there is no sign of any undue haste: it is thoroughly researched, and clearly- (and in many places, very wittily-) written, and makes its case convincingly.

Like a lot of people, I was familiar with Rumfeld's most recent "achievements", but not aware of his work in the Nixon White House. (Incidentally, Nixon referred to him as a 'ruthless little [...]' and there is a very telling dialogue between Nixon and Rumsfeld on the subject of Africans and African-Americans, where Rummy sycophantically echoes all of Nixon's worst prejudices.) Nor did I know of the role that Donald played as CEO of the GD Searle company in pushing the highly-controversial aspartame product onto the market.

The whole sorry story of the invasion of Iraq and the roles of Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Feith, and Perle are described with greater insight than I have read to this date, thanks to the author's skill in getting so many officials close to the decision-making processes to speak to him. Rumfeld's responsibliity for the disgrace of Abu Ghraib is outlined in its full sickening detail.

The myth of Rumsfeld's managerial abilities is effectively laid to rest, with examples of mismanagement, indecisiveness, and bullying from throughout his career. Interestingly it seems that George Bush Snr. seems to have been one of the few to have recognized this (when Rumsfeld wrote asking to be ambassador of Japan, Bush wrote on his request NO. THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!).

Now that Rumsfeld has amassed an enormous fortune, I suppose he can turn his back on his disastrous career and enjoy Midge Decter's fawning biography of him. For the rest of us who must suffer as a result of his mistakes, this masterly work serves as a model of how we need people like Cockburn to remind us that so often our emperors are naked frauds.

Damns the Man, Ignores the Dead and Wounded

Having read most of the books about the last eight years and the various debacles imposed on the world and on America by Cheney-Bush (see my lists on Iraq After-Action Reports and on Evaluating Dick Cheney), much of this book was not a surprise, but I would also be quick to say that there are a number of gems here not found elsewhere.

Of special interest to me were the reality that the lies and fantasy on the Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq were a replay of the Team B lies about Soviet weapons successfully carried out under Reagan. This cabal has a clear pattern of believing that any lie is acceptable, that Congress is to be ignored, that there is no constraint on Executive power.

Gems:

Rumsfeld started talking about bombing Iraq before 3 pm on 9/11.

Rumsfeld built the force that he fought with, back when he was first secretary of defense.

Sadaam Hussein was the only Arab leader that welcomes Rumsfeld in the 1990's.

Novak was a willing accomplice in destroying CIA under Reagan with Team B lies, and again in destroying Plume today.

Rumsfled liked Doug Feith *because* of Feith's notorious stupidity.

Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff was widely viewed as an "abused puppy" avoiding confrontation with Rumsfeld.

CIA won the Afghan war, but Rumseld claimed it for himself. No mention that I noticed of Rumsfeld's disterous mistakes in allowing Pakistan to evacuate 3000 Tlaiban and Al Qaeda, and in refusing to but a Ranger battalion in Bin Laden's path when CIA had "eyes on" for four days (see my reviews of "First In" and "JAWBREAKER" as well as various books on my Iraq After Action list).

After a while I tired of this book. I thought to myself that the author has done a good job on destroying Rumsfeld, but there is a great deal of context that is missing, including Cheney's more active role behind the scenes, and virtually no mention of the thousands of US dead and 75,000 amputees that Rumsfeld created for no good reason.

My bottom line: Rumsfeld was put at Defense because the first candidate irritated the President, the President was a fool and wanted to appoint someone his father hated, and Dick Cheney was happy to have his former mentor over at Defense, which Cheney, as a more recent Secretary of Defense, no doubt felt he could manage from the White House. America chose to allow this cabal to steal two elections in a row, and to go to war on a web of lies denounced in advance by General Zinni,at OSS.Net, and in many other places. SHAME ON US. Rumsfled is our child, and we have to live with what we have wrought on the world.

A Must Read for Concerned Citizens

Andrew Cockburn's unauthorized biography of Donald Rumsfeld is a "must read" for anyone interested in understanding the systemic and dysfunctional behavour of the US government and that of the current Bush Administration in particular. While much has been written of Rumsfeld's failure as a wartime Secretary of Defense, and Cockburn adds much valuable information to this growing body of literature, less has been written about Rumsfeld's disastrous record in managing the Pentagon' programmatic and budgetary activities. Cockburn's book is pathbreaking in that it also addresses this equally important subject, and this review will focus on this latter aspect of Rumsfeld's record.

First some "truth in advertising:" I have known Cockburn for almost thirty years and consider him a close friend. I am an admirer of his earlier books, and I was a minor source of information in the Rumsfeld book (see pages 207-208).

I retired from the Department of Defense in 2003 after thirty three years, including twenty-six years in the Office of Secretary of Defense in Pentagon, where, as a staff analyst, I wrote numerous publicly available reports describing how the dysfunctional managerial problems plaguing the Pentagon, from the Carter presidency to that of George W. Bush, created a historical pattern of shrinking forces, aging weapons, and continual pressure to reduce combat readiness, all lubricated by corrupt accounting system that subverted the Accountability Clause of the Constitution. Most of these reports can be found on the internet ([...]) and in my book "Defense Facts of Life: The Plans/Reality Mismatch." The fact that our troops went to Iraq ill-equipped and untrained to a war of choice created by the Bush Administration is natural consequence of this dysfunctional history. Cockburn's book is an essential reading for anyone trying to understand why the Big Green Spending Machine is now completely out of control.

Donald Rumsfeld cannot be blamed for the Pentagon's managerial dysfunctions. In fact, when he entered office, he promised to transform the Pentagon's management practices. To this end, he established several transformation panels, including a financial management transformation panel. The final report issued by this panel, Transforming Department of Defense Financial Management: A Strategy for Change, April 13, 2001, (aka the Friedman Report) correctly described the profound consequences of DoD's unauditable accounting system when it said these systems do not provide reliable information that ... "tells managers the costs of forces or activities that they manage and the relationship of funding levels to output, capability or performance of those forces or activities." Put another way, the management information provided by DoD's accounting system is so corrupt and unreliable that it is impossible to link budget decisions to policy intentions.

Nevertheless, while the Bush Administration shovelled money into the Pentagon jacking up spending to levels not seen since WWII, Rumsfeld chose to effectively ignore the findings of the Friedman Report, his rhetoric about tough-minded change notwithstanding. By ignoring the problems his own transformation panel correctly described, Rumsfeld demonstrated a level of incompetence and cavalierness that magnified the Pentagon's decision making pathologies to a degree that I found and continue to find astonishing and unprecedented.

Cockburn's well written book lays bare how this disaster is part and parcel of Rumsfeld's character flaws: on the one hand, Cockburn shows how Rumfeld was a bully who surrounded himself with sychophants and yesmen, a fact that was common knowledge in the Pentagon before I left in 2003, and on the other hand, he shows how Rumsfeld was a dilettante and consequently afraid to make truly hard decisions, a fact that was also in evidence before I left. Combine these twin character flaws with skyrocketing defense budgets, and you have a prescription for a financial and programmatic catastrophe that will plague the United States for at least a generation and undermine the government's ability to pay for the perfectly predictable costs of an aging population, not to mention a grotesquely mismanaged war. The only beneficiaries of this mess are defense contractors and the politicians who feed on defense expenditures. The soldiers at the pointy end of spear and the taxpayers and their children have been hosed.

One vignette from Cockburn's book illustrates how Rumsfeld's twin character flaws force-fed the natural impulse to chaos: Rumsfeld played the tough guy when he cancelled the Army's Crusader self-propelled howitzer, a gold plated holdover from the cold war. To be sure, this hi-tech program was flawed and suffered from cost growth and should have been cancelled. In fact, it was the lowest hanging fruit in the Pentagon's orchard of low hanging fruit. The Army and its congressional supporters howled at the time, but their howls quickly disappeared. Why?

Well, progammatically speaking, the answer is clear: Rumsfeld replaced the Crusader with the far more expensive, super hi-tech Future Combat System (FCS), a fantastical "system of systems" for the all-electric battlefield of the future. The end result of this cynical swap was that the same contractors were promised much more money and given a far longer period of time before they would have to deliver any new hardware to our combat forces. More money with less deliverables is manna from heaven to contractors on a cost-plus dole. And ... it has the added benefit of increasing the pressure for higher Army budgets over the long term. Meanwhile, today, troops going to Iraq, particularly those in the National Guard, who don't have the equipment they say they need. Multiply such decision-making modalities by hundreds of R&D and procurement decisions over the last six years, and it is easy to see how ground work has been laid for even higher defense budgets in the future, Iraq War of no Iraq War, threat or no threat, Democratic or Republican Administrations notwithstanding.

This is the programmatic and budgetary legacy of Rumsfeld's tenure. To understand why, a good first step is to read Cockburn's book.

After surviving the horrors of the Iran-Iraq War, Shant was then forced to fight on the front lines of Desert Storm without being given the proper equipment, including a gun, but miraculously survived to be captured by the Americans and become a POW. He underwent starvation, heavy interrogations, and solitary confinement, but what broke him in the end was his love affair with a female American soldier. Yet throughout this whole ordeal, Shant never lost his respect for people, his faith in God, or his sense of humor.

Kenderian, an Iraqi-American, traces his strange odyssey from American schoolboy to Iraqi soldier and U.S. prisoner of war in this unique and informative autobiography. Kenderian was a permanent U.S. resident when he traveled to Iraq in 1980 to visit his estranged father. While there, Saddam invaded Iran and closed the country's border, stranding Kenderian, who was eventually drafted into the Iraqi navy for three and a half years. After the Iran-Iraq War, Saddam invaded Kuwait in August 1990, recalling Kenderian to active duty before he could escape. When the landing craft he was on hit a mine in the Persian Gulf—ironically placed by his own unit—the survivors were picked up by an American frigate and the relieved Kenderian became a POW. Because of his flawless English, Kenderian was a favorite of his captors, worked informally as an interpreter and even became romantically involved with a female army reservist. After much diplomatic maneuvering, the self-described "man without a country" was granted "humanitarian parole" and returned to the U.S. Kenderian's decade-long ordeal is a bittersweet story, but after acknowledging his "really bad timing," he eschews the negative for an inspirational account of perseverance and survival. About the Author
Shant Kenderian immigrated to the United States at the age of fifteen with his mother. He has earned several degrees, including a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He currently works for The Aerospace Corporation in the Los Angeles area, where he lives with his wife and three children.

An amazing true story of war, tyranny, courage, and dignity

This story is an amazing tale of bravery under terrifying conditions during the first Persian Gulf War. Shant Kenderian, an Iraqi-born American, gets trapped in Iraq under Saddam Hussein and puts his life on the line to return home to his beloved America. It paints an interesting picture of that war and a sympathetic picture of Iraqi citizens under an unscrupulous tyrant who sent thousands of men and boys to their deaths. When Shant reaches the American POW camp, his story shows the great decency of our American troops and the camaraderie that developed between our troops and the many Iraqi POWs. This book will give you great insight into the lives of Iraqis and will also give you great pride in the behavior of our American soldiers.

Inspiring

This is by far one of the most inspiring books I have read in a while. I am amazed by Mr. Kenderian's strength of character despite all the opportunities and justifications there was to have been less than honorable. It made me realize how much I take living in this country for granted. Yes, we have our flaws but how many other countries to people make such an effort to get to? Please continue to write Mr Kenderian!

What a story!!!!

Let's be clear here about one thing. It is not possible to give a book 6 stars otherwise i would have done so. It is also not possible to rate something according to its peers quality. When I think five stars i think the classics. This book will perhaps be a classic one day. I really was captivated by his story the entire way through, really something else. To put it in perspective I understood the whole bioluminescent thing when i saw it first hand. After seeing it myself i can see what he must have went through mentally, wow!!
