Wideacre Trilogy Box Set: Wideacre, The Favored Child, Meridon, by Philippa Gregory

From the New York Times bestselling author of THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL

Philippa Gregory

The Wideacre Trilogy

WIDEACRE

Beatrice Lacey, strong-minded and beautiful, refuses to conform to the social customs of her time. Destined to lose her family name and beloved Wideacre estate once she is married, Beatrice will use any means:--seduction, betrayal, even murder--to protect her ancestral heritage. Yet even as Beatrice's scheming seems about to yield her dream, she is haunted by the one person who knows the extent of her plans...and her capacity for evil.

THE FAVORED CHILD

The Wideacre estate is bankrupt. The villagers are living in poverty, and Wideacre Hall is a smoke-blackened ruin. But, in the Dower House, two children are being raised in protected innocence. Equal claimants to the estate, rivals for the love of the village, they are tied by a secret childhood betrothal but forbidden to marry. Only one can be the favored child. Only one can be Beatrice Lacey's true heir.

MERIDON

Meridon knows she does not belong in the dirty vagabond life of a bareback rider in a traveling show. The half-remembered vision of another life drives her son, even as her beloved sister, Dandy, risks everything for their future. Alone, Meridon follows the urgings of her dream, riding in the moonlight past the rusted gates, up the winding drive to a house--clutching the golden clasp of the necklace that is her birthright--home at last to Wideacre.

My wife does not want these books in our house
By James L. King
My wife and I both read and loved Philippa Gregory's The Other Boleyn Girl and thought we would enjoy anything she had written....WRONG.I must confess we only read a few chapters in the first book of this three book series. Thats all it took to see where the story was leading. I guess incest is just not something I am interested in reading about. My wife keeps telling me to throw the books away as she does not want anyone to see them and think we read them. Philippa is so much better than this.I wasted my money on these three. jim

All I Could Bare: My Life in the Strip Clubs of Gay Washington, D.C., by Craig Seymour

Now in paperback, the frank, funny, explicit, and inspiring memoir about how dancing naked in gay clubs in the nation’s capital helped a college professor discover his true self.

All I Could Bare is the story of a mild-mannered graduate student who “took the road less clothed,” a decision that would change his life forever. In the 1990s, when Washington, D.C.’s gay club scene was notoriously no-holds-barred, Craig Seymour embarked on his incredible journey, all the while trying to keep his newfound vocation a secret from his parents and maintain a relationship with his boyfriend, Seth. Along the way he met some unforgettable characters: the fifty-year-old divorced man who’s obsessed with a twenty-one-year-old dancer; the celebrated drag diva who hailed from a small town in rural Virginia; and the many straight guys who were “gay for pay.” Seymour gives readers both the highs (money, adoration, camaraderie) and the lows (an ill-fated attempt at prostitution, a humiliating porn audition). Ultimately coming clean about his secret identity, Seymour breaks through taboos and makes his way from booty-baring stripper to Ph.D.-bearing academic, taking a detour into celebrity journalism and memorably crossing paths with Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Mary J. Blige along the way. Hilarious, insightful, and touching, All I Could Bare proves that sometimes the “wrong decision” can lead to the right place.

From Publishers Weekly
If an account of one's tour of duty as a stripper and sometimes prostitute in seedy downtown Washington, D.C. gay clubs could ever be called "breezy," Seymour's achieved it. Sure to please the hedonistic gay man in (almost) all of us, Seymour is frank and entirely explicit as he chronicles his journey from diligent Masters' candidate (developing a thesis on gay strip clubs) to onstage talent working every night to make a living. Unafraid to bare it all, in person and in prose, Seymour details his brief foray into prostitution as well as the (very) personal stories of his fellow dancers. Seymour can dissemble, first pinning his stripping career on low self-esteem, but later admitting to some early success with more traditional dancing and acting; it becomes clear that the author is a bit of a narcissist, but a charming one. The last fifty pages, accounting for his subsequent work as a celebrity interviewer, are pure filler; when he sticks to the clubs, though, readers will feel they're in the hands of an expert.

Review
"Part sexy parable, part witty reminiscence, part informative history lesson, All I Could Bare is a captivating introspective into a world we all have pondered. Unflinchingly honest, Seymour shows that there's far more to being naked than taking off one's clothes." -- Josh Kilmer-Purcell, author of the New York Times bestseller I Am Not Myself These Days and Candy Everybody Wants

"A clever and candid look into the world of gay male stripping that is infectious, irreverent, and ultimately inspiring." -- Stewart Lewis, author of Rockstarlet

"Witty, humorous, and filled with the guilty indulgence of an unadulterated insider's view...a cunning memoir of what most gay men search for -- to be desired, and hot boys." -- Terrance Dean, author of Hiding in Hip Hop

Positive, insightful and witty look into lives of DC's gay strippers and their followers
By Bob Lind
In this unique and engaging memoir, Craig Seymour attributes his childhood fascination with street hookers, glimpsed as his parents drove through his native D.C. at night, as the likely motivation to do his master's thesis on the social interaction of male strippers and their customers in the "hands on" D.C. gay clubs of the late '80's and early '90's. When one of his interviewees at the clubs suggested he'd get a much better perspective by actually working as a stripper, he agreed, with much trepidation yet excitement at no longer being an "outsider" in that world. For a period of years that reached through his doctoral studies, Seymour became a regular performer at several of these clubs located in the seedy S.E. section of downtown, ironically a short distance from the White House and Pentagon. Throughout these years, he returned home each night to his longtime (and first) lover, Seth, who didn't really understand his need to dance naked in front of strangers instead of teaching (as he did) to finance his graduate studies, but nevertheless tolerated it as something Craig needed to do.

The "memoir" section of most gay book stores has no shortage of books by former strippers, escorts or porn stars, doing a "tell-all" about their exploits for a willing audience of readers. Seymour's book is refreshingly different from this crowd, not just because he "drew the line" at stripping, but because he recognizes and reflects on the reasons why he needed to do it, and how it has helped and shaped his personality and future career aspirations, which included a stint as a music critic, celebrity journalist/photographer, and now as a professor of English. It's a witty and positive message of being open to live one's dreams, regardless of any possible consequences, and being honest and open-minded in dealings with people you meet at any stage in your life. The book also gives considerable insight into the mindset of other strippers, including "gay for pay" straight boys there (supposedly) just for the money, as well as the lives of some of the regular (but occasionally racist) customers, who craved the forced intimacy and fantasy "connection" made with these boys. Last but not least, it gives a historical and political perspective on gay nightlife in Seymour's beloved home town, which razed all of these clubs about ten years ago to make room for the new baseball stadium for the Washington Nationals. Much recommended, five dancing stars out of five.

Funny, raunchy and inspirational
By VJBoyd
When this book first came across my desk, I wondered if I'd be able to relate to some gay guy who fantasizes about stripping, and then makes that fantasy come true. But this book is about more than that. Sure, that's Craig Seymour's story, and he's sticking to it, but he also makes the book about so much more: about following your dreams and passions, about facing down your fears, about being who you really are. And to top it all off, Seymour accomplishes all this with a page-turning narrative that somehow manages to be raunchy, inspirational and hilarious, all at the same time. If you can only read one book this summer, this one is it.

Great writer, juicy story and a great read
By Rich Merritt
LOVED THIS BOOK! It's easy to read and entertaining and deep all at the same time. Seymour goes from being a guy who wanted his epitaph to say "He Never Embarrassed His Parents" to a stripper who takes all his clothes off so men could fondle him for money. Craig comes across as a guy you'd hope to meet and not just for his body. As only someone who's participated in the system can describe, he grasps the nuances and complexities of sex work.

He seems to have a great spirit with observations like the following:

"It was easy to think of the customers as just dirty old men, but many, like Dave, had led lives that had been full of secrets and compromise. That made their time at the clubs seem less like a hedonistic indulgence and more like a taste of hard-worn freedom."

He also pays tribute to Frank Kameny, an often-overlooked brave pioneer in the days of pre-Stonewall gay equality and exposes the hypocritical Matt Drudge.

Thanks for baring your soul, Craig!

Rich Merritt, author of Code of Conductand Secrets Of A Gay Marine Porn Star

It oughta be a crime for somebody to talk so much.

"I mean, can you believe she had on panty hose with sandals? She looked like a country bumpkin." Trina rambled on like she was in a marathon talking contest.

I needed to get away from this girl before I killed her. Or myself. Well, not literally. But trust me when I say the way that Trina King was working my nerves, I sure thought about it.

"Aren't you glad you came to the mall with us?" Trina said, in that high-pitched Daffy Duck voice of hers.

I glared at her but didn't say anything. Shoot, I was still trying to figure out how I ended up at the mall with Alexis and her bourgie friend, Trina. If you looked up the word Trina in the dictionary, they'd probably have annoying next to it. Because that girl was the most annoying person I'd ever met.

"What, cat got your tongue?" Trina laughed like that cornball stuff was even funny. When I didn't laugh with her she turned toward Alexis. "Where did you find this sourpuss?"

Alexis laughed. "I told you, that's just how Jasmine is." She playfully hit my arm. I rolled my eyes.

Trina turned to say something to me again. I shot her a look to say don't bother.

I didn't even think it was the fact that Trina thought she was all that that made me sick. I think it was that high-pitched Daffy Duck voice and the way she was always swinging her long "top-of-the-line weave," as she called it, back and forth. Horsehair was horsehair, but she swore hers was imported from India so that made her special or something. I didn't think so.

"I think she's just jealous because we've been friends for so long," Trina said as she put her arm through Alexis's. "She doesn't want anyone messing up y'all little Good Girlz circle. But tell her, Alexis. We've been friends since junior high school. She can't compete with that."

Trina flashed a wide smile. I wanted to tell her that nobody was trying to compete with her funky behind. And no, I didn't like her being in the Good Girlz, but it wasn't like I had a choice. Trina had joined the Good Girlz a month ago after getting into some trouble at her school. Like the rest of us, she had come reluctantly. After all, the Good Girlz was a community service group for teens who had been in minor trouble. The group was sponsored by a Houston-area church called Zion Hill. Even though none of us really wanted to be in the group in the beginning, we'd come to love it. And now, it looked like Trina had, too.

"Jazzy, don't get all sensitive on me," Trina playfully said. "I'm just playing with you, girl."

I still couldn't do anything but look at her crazy. I knew I was probably being a butthole, but try as I might, I just couldn't click with that girl. Neither could Camille or Angel, the other original members of the group. Trina was rich and uppity. Alexis was a little bit, too, but I had gotten used to Alexis. She'd rubbed me the wrong way when we first met a year ago. But now that I knew her, I just ignored her bourgie comments because I knew she had a good heart.

Trina, on the other hand, could work a nerve!

"Jazzy-Jo, why you all quiet?" Trina asked me as we made our way into yet another department store. She swung her hair back as she sashayed her tiny frame into the store.

"For the one-trillionth time, my name is Jasmine Jones. Not Jaz, not Jazzy, not Jazzy-Jo. Just Jasmine, a'ight?" I rolled my eyes and stuffed my hands in my pockets as I followed her and Alexis inside.

Trina stopped and turned toward me. "Dang, girl. Chill. Why are you such a grouch?"

Alexis smiled at me. "Jasmine is always a grouch," she said playfully.

"Whatever," I replied.

"Well, if you gon' be walking around here acting all funny, why'd you even bother to come?" Trina said.

I stared at Trina. Why had I come? While I liked Alexis, as soon as she said Trina was with her I should've said forget it. But my brothers were driving me insane; I was just about to hurt the youngest one when Alexis called and asked if I wanted to go to the mall. I'd seen it as the lesser of two evils.

I sighed. "I'm not being a grouch. But we've been at the mall for two hours and we haven't bought anything. Or y'all haven't bought anything, 'cause you know I ain't got no money today." Shoot, who was I kidding? I never had any money. My family put the po in poor. I couldn't tell you the last time I went shopping.

"Oh, chill out," Trina said as she made her way out of the store and into another one. "We're window-shopping, right, Alexis?"

Alexis looked uncomfortable for a minute. But she quickly snapped out of it and said, "Right. Window-shopping."

I ignored the funny look and followed them both into the store. I was surprised when they didn't start in on me about buying some new clothes. They were always trying to make me over. They claimed I looked like a tomboy because I was almost six feet tall, wore warm-ups all the time, and didn't see any purpose in makeup.

After ten minutes, I leaned against the wall and took in the sights while Trina and Alexis browsed around. Right about now I wished Camille and Angel were around. They'd at least keep me company. I people-watched for several more minutes before looking around for Alexis and Trina. I spotted them coming out of the dressing room.

"Are you all ready to go?" I asked.

"Yeah, I'm done," Trina and Alexis said in unison.

We hurried out of the store, then out of the mall. We had barely closed the doors on the car when both of them busted out laughing.

"Oh my God!" Alexis exclaimed. "That was too easy."

"I told you," Trina said. "Piece of cake."

I was sitting in the backseat and had no idea what they were talking about. "What was a piece of cake?" I asked, leaning up in the seat.

Trina looked all sneaky and stuff. "This," she said as she pulled clothes out from under her shirt.

My eyes almost jumped out of their sockets. Trina was holding up three pink Baby Phat T-shirts, all with the price tags still hanging on them.

"Trina, tell me you did not steal those," I said.

Trina smiled. "Okay, I won't tell you, then." She tossed the shirts at Alexis and turned around and started up the car.

I looked at Alexis, waiting to see the shock register on her face as well. Instead, she held the shirt up to her chest and said, "Girl, I'm going to look cute in this."

"I can't believe this," I said as I stared at the T-shirts.

"What? Girl, I got one for you," Trina said.

I looked at Trina like she'd lost her mind. "You are insane." I turned back to Alexis. "And you knew about this? You know my grandma is crazy. You trying to get me killed?"

"What's the big deal? We didn't get caught," Alexis said as Trina navigated onto the freeway. This really shocked me because the Alexis I'd come to know over the last year was sweet and straitlaced. Forget the fact that her family was loaded, stealing was just something I never thought she'd be down with.

"Plus, Alexis didn't take them. I did," Trina added, pulling me out of my thoughts. "She's too good to take things without paying for them anymore," she joked.

Anymore? I couldn't believe my ears. Judging from the designer jeans, top, and rhinestone belt that Trina had on, she could have bought plenty of T-shirts. And God knew Alexis could've bought the whole dang factory. I mean, her daddy owned a hotel and everybody knew he was loaded.

"Alexis, this is totally crazy," I said. "You have money. You have it made. And you gon' put my life in jeopardy? We could go to jail, and for what? Some stupid T-shirts?"

"You can go to jail for jaywalking but people still do it," Trina said as she switched lanes.

Alexis shrugged. "Don't worry about it. The stores have insurance. They're covered. Plus, they overcharge for this stuff anyway."

I sat back in my seat, dumbfounded. Don't get me wrong. I'm from the hood. I know some thieves. But they're hood rats, or people who steal to survive, or they steal to feed their kids. Alexis and Trina had to be the richest girls I'd ever met in my life. Their stealing made no sense to me.

Alexis turned around to face me in the backseat. "Jasmine, it's really no big . . . oh my God!" Alexis said with a look of horror across her face as she stared out of the back window. I turned to see what she was looking at.

I swear I thought I was going to pass out when I saw the flashing lights pull up behind us. Trina looked back, too, then seemed to quickly lose that confidence she'd had just a minute ago.

"I cannot believe you two are so stupid," I hissed as I turned back around and folded my arms across my chest.

"Shut up," Trina said, suddenly looking all nervous. She pulled the car over.

Alexis didn't say anything. She just sat in the front seat with a terrified look across her face.

The officer walked up to the car. "Evening, ladies. License and registration, please."

I think that had to be the closest I'd ever come to peeing on myself.

"Hello, Officer. Do you mind telling me what I was doing wrong?" Trina said with a fake smile as she reached into the glove compartment.

"I think you know what you did," the officer said.

I wanted to throw myself on his mercy and tell him I had nothing to do with the theft. I wanted to cry and beg him not to take me to jail. I just knew it was all over. They were going to throw me in a cell with someone named Big Sexy. Maybe I'd get lucky and get a cell with my cousin, Shanae, who was in jail for stabbing her husband's girlfriend. Shanae would watch my back. Oh, who was I kidding? I wasn't ready to go to jail. Everyone thought I was hard, but I'd just learned to keep my guard up because people were always giving me a hard time.

"You were going eighty in a sixty-mile-an-hour zone."

The police officer's words snapped me out of my thoughts. He took the papers Trina handed him.

I don't know about Trina and Alexis, but I wanted to turn backflips when he said that. He was stopping us for speeding.

"I am s...

Blessing Lessons (4.5) Stars
By Angelia Vernon Menchan
Blessings in Disguise by ReShonda Tate Billingsley picks up six months after her first book in the teen series, Nothing But Drama, ends. In the first book, we were introduced to Camille, Alexis, Angel and Jasmine, who had become a part of a Christian teen group, dubbed The Good Girlz. The first book was told in alternating, character chapters. In Blessings in Disguise, Ms. Billingsley allows the story to be told in one voice, the voice of Jasmine.

Jasmine is a plus-sized, fifteen-year old with many insecurities and a chip on her shoulder. She is plagued by feelings of being unattractive, poor and overworked by her family. She is also consumed with finding the father she has never known. Jasmine's fate changes when she discovers that Donovan a star athlete, new to her school, has genuine feeling for her. Her relationship with Donovan is a bright spot in her life, but there are always other issues.

Jasmine discovers that her friends from the Good Girlz are involved in illegal activities, and though she does not agree, she finds herself going along for the ride. She also has a lead on where her father might be located. She is convinced once she finds him her life will be perfect. What Jasmine discovers is that everything that looks good is not necessarily good for you. Finding herself in trouble will prove to her and her friends that trouble can often be blessings in disguise.

Blessings in Disguise is a fast-paced, enjoyable cautionary tale. This book is recommended for any young person and anyone who remembers being young.

All That Glitters Isn't Gold
By K. L. Burchett
In Nothing But Drama (Book 1) Camille, Angel, Alexis and Jasmine became friends after joining the Good Girlz Club, and, although the reader learned a bit about each character, the main focus was on Camille. In Book 2 of ReShonda Tate Billingsley's Christian teen series the author introduced another Good Girlz Club member, Trina, who had a habit that got her and other members into trouble, and she touched on Alexis' issues with her parents, however, the main focus was Jasmine's story:
Jasmine's brothers got on her every nerve, she was responsible for most of the cleaning and cooking at home, and she always seemed to end up in situations that reminded her of the fact that she didn't have money. Jasmine hated her life, and she believed that if she could just find the father she'd never known a relationship with him would make everything much better. Jasmine's mother, Jetola, refused to even speak of this man and became highly upset when her daughter brought him up, so there was no way Jasmine was going to convince her to reveal her father's whereabouts. Still, a determined Jasmine found her father, but she also found out that all that glitters isn't gold. That was cool in the end, though, because a lesson learned brought Jasmine closer to her mother.
With only 166 pages this book was a quick read. I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

An intelligent and relevant look at gender politics
By Gregory Baird
I discovered "Female Chauvinist Pigs" when its author, Ariel Levy, appeared on an episode of The Colbert Report to talk about her book. I was deeply impressed with her -- an intelligent, funny, confidant, and down-to-earth woman -- and the subject matter of her book, compelling me to go out and buy it. Levy examines the current state of feminism in a society that has been infiltrated by "raunch culture." This term refers to the rise of porn and sexuality into the mainstream, whether through porn star Jenna Jameson becoming a prominent media figure and a bestselling novelist, the success of female-exploitation products like the "Girls Gone Wild" DVD series, women enrolling in cardio striptease classes at gyms across America, or the popularity of instructional lap dance videos and classes. Women have embraced their sexuality as the ultimate expression of empowerment, proclaiming that this is the new face of feminism. But Levy isn't so sure that raunch culture is as feminist as these women seem to think it is, and sets about debunking that belief through a series of interviews and research assignments going back five years. She aims to prove that the women at the forefront of this new movement are not the ultimate feminists but the result of a misguided mutation of the feminist movement that has produced female chauvinists instead of feminists: women who espouse the same stereotypical views about women and womanhood that a male chauvinist would have, sort of like a gay republican. Suddenly women seem to want to be one of the boys and are desperate not to get labelled a 'girly girl' -- the ultimate slander in raunch culture. The way to achieve this, Levy argues, is to dress and act like a stripper. But where is the liberation in this? Men don't have to undress to become powerful beings -- and we certainly aren't under as much aesthetic pressure as women. Instead of liberating themselves, these women are trapping themselves in the very same system that has degraded them for centuries. Wanting to act like a man implies that there is something unpleasant about womanhood that must be escaped from.

The proliferation of sex is particularly troubling to Levy, and in her interviews it becomes astonishingly clear that the women who are pursuing empowerment through a sort of sexual revolution are feeling very empty about their sexuality. Almost all of the women she speaks to admit that they don't get much pleasure out of their intimacies, but keep seeking out meaningless sex for various reasons (they don't want to be seen as a prude, they want to keep adding notches to their belt, they want bragging rights, etc.). What, then, is the point in increasing your sexual productivity if the results aren't gratifying to you? And why go to the extremes of mini-skirts, waxing, cleavage-and-midriff-baring tops, implants, lifts, tucks, and such to attract men if your goal is to develop a sense of self worth? A male interview subject points out that "what girls don't understand is guys always want girls. If every girl dressed casually, you'd still like girls. It's like, you don't have to exhaust yourself." And why emulate strippers and porn stars? Research shows that the vast majority of women in the sex industry are the products of sexual abuse, and in interviews they never mention deriving pleasure from their work so much as a feeling of revenge. Furthermore, strippers and porn stars are paid to simulate sexual gratification -- so how can anyone presume to find sexual liberation in imitating an imitation?

If I have a complaint with Levy's work, it's that she sometimes makes errors in her pop culture references and interpretations. She refers to rapper Snoop Dogg as Snoop Doggy Dogg -- a name he hasn't gone by for years. She also incorrectly identifies the first single from Paris Hilton's album (although I cannot fault her for not wanting to get more specifics on that abomination). These are relatively minor mistakes, but for a young woman like Levy they feel surprising to me. The big one was that I felt that she really misinterpreted "Sex and the City" big time. Yes, the show did start out with Carrie wanting to "have sex like a man" and dealt with sex as a commercial commodity -- but the genius of the show was that its multi-faceted, complex characters really grew and developed over the years, and in the end they all found themselves in serious relationships -- leaving the offensive aspects of raunch culture behind them.

Having said that, I am impressed with the depth of insight Levy offers to her research and her involvement in the subject matter. She makes a very clear, convincing argument (even if I was biased to believe it in the first place), and at the very least she is to be commended for bringing the subject up for discussion (indeed, her thesis is relevant not only to gender politics but to differences of race and sexual orientation as well). It's about time someone did, and thank goodness it was an author with the clarity, wisdom and open-mindedness of Ariel Levy.

If It Walks Like A Duck and Quacks Like A Duck... (A Middle-Aged Male Perspective)
By Franklin the Mouse
Speaking as an agnostic man who has been happily married for twenty-five years and raising two young boys (ages 10 and 8), Ms. Levy addresses an important issue which I have found very perplexing and disheartening. Raising our sons to respect woman and sexuality flies in the face of what they are exposed to on a daily basis. Short of our family running into the hills and living in a cave, this sexual objectification of women is the environment my boys will grow up in. Against this raunchy juggernaut, it makes our job as parents a whole hell of a lot more difficult.

Ms. Levy, in a highly readable, mildly sarcastic book, lays bare the pretzel-like logic used by women to find validation by being what is essentially a sexual trophy to men's libidinal fantasies. If depicting yourself as a quasi-prostitute is a statement of feminine empowerment, then Paris Hilton must be Betty Friedan...I don't think so. Ms. Levy's book is a sometimes whimsical but ultimately sad eye-opener on women being primarily valued as childish, superficial sex objects. A quick and thought-provoking read.

Buying it for my girlfriends, my boyfriend and my dad
By Pepper
This is a great book to start a conversation among women and feminists, people who celebrate women's sexual empowerment, and people who deplore the coarsening of our culture. Levy picks apart the extent to which these things are (and are not) related. She has a gift for directly addressing things we've all been aware of but probably haven't thought to inquire into.

This book doesn't have all the answers and it doesn't address all the arguments, but it doesn't profess to: I found it valuable for *stimulating* thoughts on how feminism has (apparently) morphed, what our obligations are to ourselves and to women generally, and the potential larger impact of our individual choices. (I've worn a Playboy-logo T-shirt, thinking of it as shorthand for, or 'taking back' a symbol of, female sexuality...but I was ambivalent about it at the time, and now I wonder whether the actual effect was to undermine my own convictions - what exactly was the point of emphasizing female sexuality anyway?)

Ariel Levy identifies a culture-wide cheapening of female attributes at the same time that we see women succeed as individuals in "non-traditional" fields. She suggests reasons why women and girls are buying into the coarsening messages, suggesting that their motivation is largely selfish - to advance individually in a world that (still) caters to men's desires even at the expense of other women generally, who necessarily continue to get the short end of the stick (in order to maintain the paradigm that's so effective for those exceptional women). Surely that kind of female success cannot be sustainable, since it puts women just as clearly into boxes as did playing by the old rules. When *every* woman seeks to stand out by stepping on top of other women, it's just a jumbled mess.

The first half is better than the second half, when Levy moves from mainstream shifts to fringier elements, but even those are interesting illustrations of a weird, subconscious-seeming, univeral acceptance of the superiority of what we consider to be male.

It's a quick read, but you'll think about it for a while.

Chapter One

Nurturing Hearts

Cultivate faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love in your children. For if they are growing in these qualities, they won’t be ineffective or unproductive, and they will never stumble.

Your Living God

Inspirational Message

You may not realize it, but you are a gifted gardener. Though you may be incapable of keeping a simple houseplant alive, you are an accomplished gardener nonetheless. The soil you work in is not of this world. No! It is the soil of the human heart.

Your children are your fertile field, and in their hearts you have tenderly planted your seeds of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

At times, you have courageously protected your precious field from destructive and uninvited strangers. When spiritual or physical disease threatened, you worked with bleeding hands to free the roots of life from contaminants. You have nursed the wounds left by the violent storms of life. You have struggled through seasons of drought; you have celebrated at the sight of unhampered growth. You have weeded, watered, plowed, and prayed.

In turn, you should know that your labor of love has not gone unnoticed. You are deeply loved and appreciated – not only by hearts you have tended and cared for, but by the God who made you the mother (and expert gardener) you are.

    God bless you, Mom.

There never was a woman like her. She was gentle as a dove and brave as a lioness . . .

The memory of my mother and her teachings were, after all, the only capital I had to start life with, and on that capital I have made my way.

—Andrew Jackson

Mother’s Cherry Tree

My mother loved all growing things. We had apple trees, pear trees, a grape arbor, a rose arbor, tulips, lilacs, irises, and an annual garden. The Merdocks, who lived directly west of us, had a large cherry orchard. Although they gave us all the cherries we wanted, my mother was determined to have her own cherry tree. Accordingly, one fall we planted (I say "we" because I dug the hole) a three-foot sapling. Mother fertilized, watered, watched over, pampered, and stroked that tree until it was a wonder it didn’t die from too much attention. It was amazing how it grew, and in its second spring it actually blossomed and bore cherries – not enough to make a pie – but my mother was so proud of the accomplishment that she nearly burst. She even carried some of those cherries in her purse to show her friends.

We always shopped at the A & P grocery store in Royal Oak. Fortunately for me, just down the street was Frentz & Sons Hardware. While my mother shopped, I wandered up and down the aisles of Frentz & Sons. It was a fascinating place. Great bins of nails, rows of hinges, racks of shovels, balls of twine, smells of feed, seed, and leather goods, and a hundred other items all combined to make it a whole world in itself. Inevitably, I was led to the fishing equipment, then the gun rack, and finally to the knife display case. It was a wooden cabinet with a glass door. I stood for long minutes gazing in wonder that there could be so many fine things to be had.

At the bottom of the knife case there was one item in particular that attracted me. It was a belt hatchet – just the right size for me. It had a leather case that could be strapped right onto your belt for carrying purposes. I began to pester my mother about it. One day she actually went in to look at it, and I knew that my pleading was getting somewhere. It was a long process, but eventually she bought it for me.

I remember going around the yard whacking on things. It was exceedingly sharp. I whacked on old two-by-fours, I whacked on an old crate that had been sitting behind the chicken coop – but it was all very dissatisfying. I wanted something more substantial to cut. All of the trees on our place were far too large for me to tackle with my hatchet – all except one – the cherry tree. As preposterous as this seems, the idea was probably enhanced by my school teacher telling us about George Washington cutting down the cherry tree. Since George was quite a hero, the idea of cutting down our cherry tree was an easy step.

I guess that actually walking up and cutting it down all at once was a little too much for me, so I decided to trim it a little first. The result was that I left not a single limb intact. Our cherry tree was reduced to a forlorn looking, tapering rod protruding from the ground. Around its base lay a pile of limbs with the leaves looking limp and sickly.

When I stepped back to survey my work, my conscience began speaking to me. You know, consciences are often the most useless things. When I needed it was before I started, but it was completely silent - didn't help me a lick. It never said, "John, you'd best think about this," or "Are you sure this is what you want to do?" Now, when it was too late to be of any use whatsoever, here it came - full blast. "Now look what you've done," it cried. Pictures of my mother fertilizing and watering, her proud tones as she displayed those first cherries to all of her friends - all flooded my memory and made me feel terrible

But what good did it do to feel terrible after the fact?

I put my hatchet in its case and wandered slowly into the kitchen. I had studied some on how best to approach this situation and had decided that it would be to my best advantage to open the subject before it was discovered.

"I know a little boy who cut down a cherry tree," I piped in my most cheerful, winning voice.

My mother, busily occupied, replied, "Oh, I bet I know who it was. It was George Washington." She said it so nice and sweet that I was reassured and plunged ahead.

"No, it wasn’t. It was John Smith."

Right off, there was a noticeable change in both the temperature and the atmospheric pressure in the kitchen. My mother turned on me quickly, and her voice didn’t have any sweetness in it – or light either, for that matter.

"Did you cut down my cherry tree?" She grabbed me by my left ear (she was right handed so her grip was better on that side), and we marched out to the scene of the crime – with her nearly lifting me off the ground, using my left ear for leverage.

    I would have gone anyway.

When she saw the tree, she started to cry; and since she needed both hands to dry her eyes, she turned loose of my ear – which was a great relief. It was a sad-looking sight – standing there like a little flagpole – but I thought things might go a little easier for me since she was so sad and all. They didn’t. She whipped me with every last limb I had chopped off that tree – whipped me till the limb was just shreds of bark left in her hand. I was afraid she was going to start on the pear tree limbs, but she finally gave out. You know, a person is mortally strong when they’re aroused like that, and they also have an amazing endurance. It cheered me some to think that she was using the limbs on me instead of the hatchet.

You know, my mother went right back to work on that cherry tree. She kept right on watering and fertilizing and caring for it. Anyone else would have given up. She willed that tree to live, and it did. It grew and became a fine tree with only a few scars on its trunk – to remind me of my folly.

Isn’t it amazing how things will grow if they get the right kind of attention? I strongly suspect that there’s a lot of folks around right now who were at one time near to death – like mother’s cherry tree – because some thoughtless rascal started cutting on them, but now they’re healthy and growing because somebody kept watering and fertilizing and loving them – and they lived.

In fact, I strongly suspect that’s what happened to me. Today, I am healthy and strong, with only a few scars to remind me of my folly and some folks’ attempts to trim me. And I stand here knowing Christ, because both he and my mother wouldn’t quit on me.

Amazon.com Review
Witness Stephen King's triumphant, blood-spattered return to the genre that made him famous. Cell, the king of horror's homage to zombie films (the book is dedicated in part to George A. Romero) is his goriest, most horrific novel in years, not to mention the most intensely paced. Casting aside his love of elaborate character and town histories and penchant for delayed gratification, King yanks readers off their feet within the first few pages; dragging them into the fray and offering no chance catch their breath until the very last page.

In Cell King taps into readers fears of technological warfare and terrorism. Mobile phones deliver the apocalypse to millions of unsuspecting humans by wiping their brains of any humanity, leaving only aggressive and destructive impulses behind. Those without cell phones, like illustrator Clayton Riddell and his small band of "normies," must fight for survival, and their journey to find Clayton's estranged wife and young son rockets the book toward resolution.

Fans that have followed King from the beginning will recognize and appreciate Cell as a departure--King's writing has not been so pure of heart and free of hang-ups in years (wrapping up his phenomenal Dark Tower series and receiving a medal from the National Book Foundation doesn't hurt either). "Retirement" clearly suits King, and lucky for us, having nothing left to prove frees him up to write frenzied, juiced-up horror-thrillers like Cell. --Daphne Durham

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. It's probably a good idea not to use your cell phone while you listen to Scott's beautifully understated reading of terrormeister King's latest take on technology run amok: you might just toss it down the nearest storm drain. The excellent film actor (who catches the power of his late father George C. Scott's voice but smooths off the rough edges) adds an important element—quiet believability—to King's bloody, occasionally over-the-top story of a short but lethal electronic signal that seriously damages everyone in the world using a cell phone at that moment. The Pulse, as it comes to be known, turns idle chatterers into weirdly rewired killing machines. Scott makes the lead character—a comic book artist from Maine (where else?) named Clayton Riddell, who is in Boston with his phone off and in his pocket—a touching and surprisingly tough survivor, much like the nonpods in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. He also resists the temptation to make the "phoners" (those affected by the Pulse) sound unusually strange or dangerous—until their real motives become obvious. Simultaneous release with the Scribner hardcover (Reviews, Jan. 2). (Jan.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Fans have offered their horror-fiction idol unfaltering loyalty since the publication of his first novel, Carrie, three decades ago. More than 50 books later, Stephen King's stock-in-trade remains stinging, darkly humorous social commentary. His latest effort, a nod to gore-meisters George Romero (Night of the Living Dead) and Richard Matheson (I Am Legend), among others, is no different. The result, though entertaining, is uneven. Some reviewers appreciate King for his prodigious imagination and his storytelling abilities, while others take issue with his two-dimensional characters, scattershot plotting, and the too-obvious echoes of past novels. For longtime fans of King's work, Cell may bring to mind a more compact (though ultimately less satisfying) version of the author's epic The Stand.

Stephen King's "Cell" is an engaging page-turner from start to finish
By Mizhippiegal
Stephen King's "Cell" is an engaging page-turner from start to finish. I found the story to be intriguing and the characters were drawn so well I could really relate to them. However, I was frustrated by the ending ... although, in a way I couldn't see how he could have ended it any other way. I also noted he used a few phrases and descriptions he has used before and I thought -- in that regard -- he could do better. However, per usual, the story was as thrilling as I have come to expect from this author. He's still my horror hero and I enjoyed the story!

Great read
By Skyler
This is a great book! I became a fan of Stephen King through reading his Dark Tower series, and was worried I might not enjoy any of his other novels as much, but I was sorely mistaken. This is an excellent read; I couldn't put it down throughout the story. Not as scary as I imagined his books to be, either, which was a relief(although it can get a bit gory with the descriptions at times, which didnt bother me but might bother some). Recommended by a friend of mine and I'm grateful for it!

Applauding the King of story telling
By Sam McAna
I didn't think that I could read this book all the way to the end. I have to much imagination and sometimes I can scare myself by saying "boo!" :) I am so glad I finished this novel. It had nail biting suspense that you will never get from watching a movie. I like my stories longer than a two hour movie time. I like to imagine characters for days. Hoping the best for them and their plight. The ending made me exclaim out loud, "WHAT!" then laugh.... liking the ending even more. Thanks SK

FUN
By C. Lee
This book may not be entirely accurate, but it's a lot of fun. My friend had this book and we sat around reading our birthdays and how our relationships are due to our birthdays and it was so much fun. You find out things that bring you luck, how you should treat a person in a relationship from their birthdays(not entirely inaccurate), but most of all its just a good time sharing this book with your friends and family. I bought this book for myself and have had people borrow it as well as bought it as a gift for a friend who was having a baby. She loved it!
