In the Name of Honor: A Memoir, by Mukhtar Mai

In June 2002, Mukhtar Mai, a Pakistani woman from the impoverished village of Meerwala, was gang raped by a local clan known as the Mastoi -- punishment for indiscretions allegedly committed by the woman's brother. While certainly not the first account of a female body being negotiated for honor in a family, this time the survivor had bravely chosen to fight back. In doing so, Mai single-handedly changed the feminist movement in Pakistan, one of the world's most adverse climates for women.

By July 2002, the Pakistani government awarded her the equivalent of 8,500 U.S. dollars in compensation money and sentenced her attackers to death -- and Mukhtar Mai went on to open a school for girls so that future generations would not suffer, as she had, from illiteracy.

In this rousing account, Mai describes her experience and how she has since become an agent for change and a beacon of hope for oppressed women around the world. Timely and topical, In the Name of Honor is the remarkable and inspirational memoir of a woman who fought and triumphed against exceptional odds.

From Booklist
Mai, a 32-year-old Pakistani peasant, was condemned by her village tribal council in 2002 to be gang-raped. The punishment was provoked by an accusation that her younger brother, 12 years old, had seduced an older woman. The accusation was untrue, but it still held the power to destroy the family honor. After her rape by four men, rather than disappear in humiliation or commit suicide--her first impulse--Mai fought to maintain her dignity and to protect other women from abusive traditions. She asserted humanity for herself and other women by suing the council before the supreme court of Pakistan, winning, and using the funds to start a school for girls. In this amazing collaboration with reporter Cuny, who specializes in covering women's issues and who recorded hours of conversation, Mai presents a portrait of determination in overcoming low caste status and stifling tradition. This inspirational story, which attracted international attention, is all the more powerful told in Mai's own words. Vanessa Bush

Review
"Only a few leaders are alchemists who take the worst of human behavior and turn it into the best. Mukhtaran Bibi, a Pakistani woman raised in poverty and illiteracy, has responded to the violence and gender apartheid directed at her and other women with an insistence on justice and education."

-- Gloria Steinem

About the Author
Mukhtar Mai is now a leading example for women in her native country and around the globe. With her compensation money she has opened two schools in her village, one for girls and another for boys. In August 2005, she was awarded the Fatima Jinnah gold medal for bravery and courage by the Pakistani government and was named Woman of the Year by Glamour magazine. In 2006, Time magazine listed her in their issue on the 100 most influential people in the world, and she was also awarded the North-South Prize of the Council of Europe.

A Story of Extraordinary Courage in the Face of Monstrous Adversity
By Mr. Aditya B. Surti
This is an astounding story of a simple ordinary Pakistani woman raised in poverty and illiteracy, who has courageously managed to fight against the violence and gender discrimination directed at her and countless other women, with an insistence on justice, education, and gender equality. Mukhtar Mai, who herself has been a victim of one of the many `honor punishments' still widely prevalent in rural Pakistan, was 'justifiably' gang-raped as a punishment for a crime neither she nor her family committed. To have such a rape-victim in the family is considered a social taboo and most of the women who are in similar situations end up committing suicides. But Mukhtar Mai did something different. In spite of getting thoughts to commit suicide, she chose the more difficult path - she decided to live and fight against the injustice inflicted upon her and her family. With the help of the media and various national and international NGOs, Mukhtar Mai's case gained worldwide popularity and in a matter of days a poor illiterate woman living in absolute obscurity in one of the remotest parts of Pakistan gained international fame. This story is a personal rendition of the many trials and tribulations Mukhtar Mai has gone through in the process of obtaining justice in one of the most chauvinistically male-favored justice systems in the world. It is also a story of a stupendous victory at a personal level wherein Mukhtar Mai uses the aid she gets from all over the world to establish a school in her village so that girls living in her village and the surrounding villages can use literacy and education to fearlessly protect themselves from similar injustices. This book would obviously be any feminist's favorite but more than that it is a must-read for anyone interested in the sociological and gender-related issues in the subcontinent.

Every man should read this book
By Paul Dsouza
I felt sick reading this book. It made me realize the perversion that gets called "justice" in many parts of the world. Mukhtar Mai is probably one of the very few women who has actually had the courage to talk about her ordeal... a gang rape masquerading as punishment for an honour crime supposedly committed by her brother. The book describes the Pakistan tribal justice system in a simple and lucid style. She is neither emotional nor dramatic about the events but attempts to describe what she went through and the odds that she had to overcome to fight the system. This book is amazing!

Honor is your name
By M. A. ZAIDI
If courage has a new meaning it would be Mukhtran Mai; a simple woman caught up in a storm of malevolence. The village council verdict of "gang-rape" in retaliation for falsified accusation of her brother's questionable frolic rendevouz with the tribal leaders daughter. Mai was quarentined for a ruthless gang-rape by savages of our times. Against all odds she stood up and fought back for justice and is redeemed. Her revenge on the society that shackled her down was a gesture of kindness by setting up a school by all the earnings she received as compensation for her struggles. A school where the family of the savages do attend. In her you find the spirit of forgiveness and mercy. I salute you Mukhtar Mai; for you a semblance for all the goodness left in our society.

To the readers i recommend this highly.

Amazon.com Review
At one point in this final book of the Dark Tower series, the character Stephen King (added to the plot in Song of Susannah) looks back at the preceding pages and says "when this last book is published, the readers are going to be just wild." And he's not kidding.

After a journey through seven books and over 20 years, King's Constant Readers finally have the conclusion they've been both eagerly awaiting and silently dreading. The tension in the Dark Tower series has built steadily from the beginning and, like in the best of King's novels, explodes into a violent, heart-tugging climax as Roland and his ka-tet finally near their goal. The body count in The Dark Tower is high. The gunslingers come out shooting and face a host of enemies, including low men, mutants, vampires, Roland's hideous quasi-offspring Mordred, and the fearsome Crimson King himself. King pushes the gross-out factor at times--Roland's lesson on tanning (no, not sun tanning) is brutal--but the magic of the series remains strong and readers will feel the pull of the Tower as strongly as ever as the story draws to a close. During this sentimental journey, King ties up loose ends left hanging from the 15 non-series novels and stories that are deeply entwined in the fabric of Mid-World through characters like Randall Flagg (The Stand and others) or Father Callahan ('Salem's Lot). When it finally arrives, the long awaited conclusion will leave King's myriad fans satisfied but wishing there were still more to come.

In King's memoir On Writing, he tells of an old woman who wrote him after reading the early books in the Dark Tower series. She was dying, she said, and didn't expect to see the end of Roland's quest. Could King tell her? Does he reach the Tower? Does he save it? Sadly, King said he did not know himself, that the story was creating itself as it went along. Wherever that woman is now (the clearing at the end of the path, perhaps?), let's hope she has a copy of The Dark Tower. Surely she would agree it's been worth the wait. --Benjamin Reese

From Publishers Weekly
A pilgrimage that began with one lone man's quest to save multiple worlds from chaos and destruction unfolds into a tale of epic proportions. While King saw some criticism for the slow pace of 1982's The Gunslinger, the book that launched this series, The Drawing of the Three (Book II, 1987), reeled in readers with its fantastical allure. And those who have faithfully journeyed alongside Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake and Oy ever since will find their loyalty toward the series' creator richly rewarded. The tangled web of the tower's multiple worlds has manifested itself in many of King's other works— The Stand (1978), Insomnia (1994) and Hearts in Atlantis (1999), to name a few. As one character explains here, "From the spring of 1970, when he typed the line The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed... very few of the things Stephen King wrote were 'just stories.' He may not believe that; we do." King, in fact, intertwines his own life story deeper and deeper into the tale of Roland and his surrogate family of gunslingers, and, in this final installment, playfully and seductively suggests that it might not be the author who drives the story, but rather the fictional characters that control the author. This philosophical exploration of free will and destiny may surprise those who have viewed King as a prolific pop-fiction dispenser. But a closer look at the brilliant complexity of his Dark Tower world should explain why this bestselling author has finally been recognized for his contribution to the contemporary literary canon. With the conclusion of this tale, ostensibly the last published work of his career, King has certainly reached the top of his game. And as for who or what resides at the top of the tower... The many readers dying to know will have to start at the beginning and work their way up. 12 color illus. by Michael Whelan.

From Bookmarks Magazine
"I’ve told my tale all the way to the end," King writes in the coda, "and am satisfied." Most readers will be, too. Satisfied, but also sad that after 22 years, nearly 4,000 pages, and seven installments, this archetypal fantasy quest series has ended. As in Song of Susannah, Dark Tower’s predecessor, King pens stunning set pieces, invents cataclysmic battles, and touches on familiar themes of good vs. evil. His writing is as powerful as ever—just imagine a demonic Mordred devouring his mother. But if there’s unanimous admiration for King’s genius, there’s no consensus about Dark Tower. Some critics argue that each piece of the convoluted plot fits into King’s larger vision. Others call the work imperfect for this lofty ambition of a greater whole. Some view King’s insertion of himself as a character as brilliant while others fault it as pretentious. But King fans and novices alike will find Dark Tower a "fitting capstone to a uniquely American epic" (Washington Post). Just don’t start in the middle.

Finally finished!
By Otis L. Scarbary
So, I started the series way back when, but had mixed emotions about finally finishing. I may not have read this final installment now but for the current filming project which of course is bound to be a blockbuster that I'll have to see. I guess I just didn't want it to end. All I can say now is I'm pretty satisfied with the final resolution. Weird as it is in spots, can I say "thank ya," to dear author, it suited me fine. You remain near the top if not the first of my favorite story tellers, Stephen King!!

I just had to know...
By Kinger7102
So I read the series. Up until the end of the 7th book I really enjoyed the series. For me the premier book of the series is the 4th book. The worst is the 7th book. The 7th book wasn't half bad, until the end. And of course I just had to read the end. Stephen King warned me not to, but I just had to do it.

Honestly, King ruined the series for me in those last couple pages. He talked about wanting to write an epic series like LOTR, and in those last couple pages he destroyed all of his work through the series. I originally began to feel like he was tired of the series at the end of the 5th book. Something in the story line seemed rushed and it lost it's "epic" feeling. After reading the 7th I'm almost entirely sure he was bored/tired of the series. Maybe I'm bitter, but I feel that he wanted to ruin the fantasy side of the story in those last couple pages just because his fans wanted him to finish them so desperately.

Anyways, I gave the book 2 stars. Mostly out of spite, but also because I feel that he failed to accomplish what he claimed he wanted to do all along and that he failed on purpose.

If you've ever heard you shouldn't read past the 4th book, knowing what I know now, I'd tell you to stop at 4 and dream up your own ending. Most likely it's better than King's ending. I have a feeling you won't and if you're anything like me you'll regret it, but that's just the way life is.

I was utterly sore and disappointed, but....
By Ranah Williams
After following the story of this ka-tet we've all come to know and love, King ends this saga in the most anti-climactic way ever. It's a cheap shot. Worse of all, several elements of the ending are inconsistent with given premises or rules, rather, in the book. Which makes the entire series much ado about nothing, unfortunately. Stephen King uses this book to do what most authors and movie writers know it is in poor taste to do...to make himself a character. The ending takes a cheap shot at the fans of Roland, and Stephen King does not apologize for it. A long, anti-climactic, and purposeless ending to an otherwise amazing series.

Edit October 2013:
As much as I still stand by my above review, I will acknowledge, that Stephen King used an entire series to illustrate two very important questions about life. 1. At what point does your objective/goal become less valuable than the sacrifices you make to attain it? And 2. If given the opportunity for do overs, how many of us would make the same choices? These are important questions. And perhaps if the dark tower had been only one book, it would actually be an intelligent move to end the series the way he did. All in all, this book series is the best I've ever read.

How Lincoln's Faith Shaped His Leadership

Undoubtedly the most revered leader in American history, Abraham Lincoln has had more books written about him than all our nation's presidents put together. But for all that's been written, little has focused on his faith and how this quality shaped the man who led our country during its most tumultuous years.

Author Joe Wheeler, historian and scholar, brings to the pages of this insightful book the knowledge gleaned from over ten years of study and more than sixty books on the life and times of Abraham Lincoln. Skillfully weaving his own narrative with direct quotes from Lincoln and poignant excerpts from other Lincoln biographers, Wheeler brings a refreshingly friendly rendition of Lincoln's life, faith, and courage.

The stories, historical details, and powerful quotes on the pages of this book will leave a lasting impression on your heart, your mind, and your life.

From AudioFile
Despite the title, this serviceable one-volume biography of Lincoln does not dwell on either his faith or his courage. Instead, author Joe Wheeler touches on both themes throughout to illustrate Lincoln's major achievements. A further subtitle describes the book as "stories," which is an apt description. The author recounts a series of anecdotes culled from extensive research (which the author himself reminds readers of more than once). They are interesting and informative. This story structure and its conversational style adapt well to audio. Grover Gardner carries just the right tone as narrator. His voice is folksy without losing the seriousness needed in reading about the grave issues that confronted Lincoln. In direct quotations, he slows his reading slightly but doesn't adopt special voices, which would sound forced. R.C.G. 2009 Audies Finalist © AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine

Every American Should Read this Book about our Greatest President!
By Victorya Rogers
I love history, yet I seldom carve out the time to indulge. When I was gifted "ABRAHAM LINCOLN: A Man of Faith and Courage" I began to skim it ready to put it aside. But I just couldn't put it down! Sure there are countless books on our most admired President, but NONE like this one! In this book we get verified and authenticated quotes from the man himself revealing the depth of his faith and specifically how that faith grew, and shaped his life and his presidency. Not only is every page an inspiration to remind every American in this century of our amazing, unsurpased blessings we so take for granted; it is also an amazing revelation of how God took a man of many failures and turn him into a world changer. If God can use this man who became the most admired President in our history, he can use YOU to change the world as well, no matter how small you feel!

A compelling look at Lincoln
By FaithfulReader.com
In the introduction to his latest book, Joe Wheeler relates this advice from his ad man son Greg: "No matter what the product, just tie [Abraham] Lincoln to it and it's guaranteed to sell." This perhaps explains why I've seen ads for everything from car insurance to sleeping pills featuring the celebrated 16th president of the United States. There's even a diner in my old neighborhood that features Lincoln's face prominently on its sign. Nothing says bacon and eggs like a stovepipe hat!

Books are no exception to Greg's rule. Wheeler contends that more books have been written about Lincoln than all the other presidents combined, and he enters the fray with ABRAHAM LINCOLN, A MAN OF FAITH AND COURAGE. "While I admire and revere Washington, it stops there. He is a model for many fine qualities, but with me at least, he remains only a model to be venerated. Not so with the sixteenth president. There is something about Abraham Lincoln that makes me love him. I cannot explain it: I know only that it's there," he writes. Wheeler's love for Lincoln is both a strength and weakness of his book, which often straddles the line between biography and hagiography.

There is no doubt that Lincoln was an extraordinarily individual, and the stories here provide an entertaining survey of the moments --- large and small --- that made the man. The following story illustrates the combination of solid research and faith-filled speculation that characterizes Wheeler's book.

"One day, when he was around nine, he took a bag of corn, mounted the flea-bitten gray mare, and rode leisurely to Gordon's Mill. His turn didn't come until late afternoon. Since each man was expected to provide his own power, Abe hitched the mare to the arm. As the animal moved around, the machinery responded with proportional speed --- or lack of it. Abe, mounted on the arm, found it necessary to frequently use his whip, otherwise, the horse would stop. Each time the whip action took place, Abe would say, `Get up you old hussy.' Finally, resenting Abe's whip, just as the words, `Get up,' were said, the horse elevated a shoeless foot and kicked him in the forehead, sending him sprawling.

"Mr. Gordon, the miller, hurried into the ring, picked up the senseless boy (whom he took for dead), and sent for his father. His father came, loaded the body in the wagon, and took him home. Abe lay unconscious all night, but toward day there were signs of life. The blood began to flow normally, his tongue struggled to loosen itself, his body jerked for an instant and he awoke, blurting out the other three words interrupted at the mill, `you old hussy.'

"Lincoln would talk about this strange phenomenon for the rest of his life, this memorable experience that so easily could have been his last. God must certainly have had a reason for sparing his life."

This story comes from a biography of Lincoln written in 1925, and indeed Wheeler cites his "exhaustive scholarship" of reading 60 books about Lincoln in preparing to write his own. And yet there is clearly a healthy dose of speculation mixed in with the facts, especially when it comes to Lincoln's spiritual development and relationship with God. Wheeler is not shy about reading providence into Lincoln's life at almost every turn. This will leave some readers nodding in agreement, but will leave critical readers on edge.

That said, many of Lincoln's writings offer great spiritual insight that Wheeler is right to highlight. It's clear that while Lincoln was often careful about being inclusive when discussing faith from his public platform, he was involved in a serious and significant spiritual journey with the God of the Bible. And at no time was such a searching and faithful president needed than during the Civil War.

Wheeler uses a brush dipped in sepia tones to paint the picture of Lincoln's early years growing up on the frontiers of Kentucky and Indiana, which is somewhat ironic given that Lincoln himself is noted for having no such sentimentality in his regard for the hardscrabble lifestyle of those years. But the author does an excellent job of giving context to his years by explaining the cultural, religious, political, even ecological milieu in which he lived. Wheeler is able to move helpfully between a wide angle perspective and a closer focus on Lincoln, providing a cohesive and comprehensive narrative for those not already familiar with his life and even adding some interesting details for those who have read a book or two on him. I hear there are a few out there...

A Wonderful Read!
By Quiltlady
I have collected books about Abraham Lincoln for well over forty years. I found Dr. Wheeler's book to be one of the most enjoyable to read of any that I have on my shelves. The stories that the author shares made this very unique President more "human" to me. I happened to be in Washington, D.C., when I finished the book. Although I have visited the Lincoln Memorial many times, it was a very emotional experience this time around because of what I had just read. I have enjoyed reading several of Dr. Wheeler's anthologies in the past, but I think this is his best collection ever.

The Blessing of a B Minus: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Resilient Teenagers, by Wendy Mogel Ph.D.

New York Times bestselling author, internationally known clinical psychologist, and lecturer Wendy Mogel returns with a revelatory new book on parenting teenagers.

Mogel’s sage advice on parenting young children has struck a chord with thousands of readers and made her one of today’s most trusted parenting authorities. Now, in a long-awaited follow-up, Mogel addresses the question she hears most frequently: what to do when those children become teenagers, when their sense of independence and entitlement grows, the pressure to compete and succeed skyrockets, and communication becomes fraught with obstacles?

With her warmth, wit, and signature combination of Jewish teachings and psychological research, Mogel helps parents to ably navigate the often rough journey through the teenage years and guide children to becoming confident, resilient young adults. By viewing the frustrating and worrisome elements of adolescence as “blessings,” Mogel reveals that they are in fact necessary steps in psychological growth and character development to be met with faith, detachment, and a sense of humor rather than over-involvement and anxiety. Mogel gives parents the tools to do so and offers reassuring spiritual and ethical advice on

• why influence is more effective than control.

• teenage narcissism.

• living graciously with rudeness.

• the value of ordinary work.

• why risk is essential preparation for the post–high school years.

• when to step in and when to step back.

• a sanctified approach to sex and substances.

An important and inspiring book that will fortify parents through the teenage years, The Blessing of a B Minus is itself a blessing.

From Publishers Weekly
Social-clinical psychologist Mogel concentrates on the hidden blessings of raising teenagers in this engaging follow-up to The Blessing of a Skinned Knee. Intermingling wisdom and guidelines from Judaism and adolescent psychology, Mogel compares the teen years to the journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. As kids wander in the "desert" of adolescence, she advises parents to offer counsel and guidance, demonstrate empathy without entanglement, and resist the urge to intervene or rescue. In chapters peppered with true-to-life examples and humor, Mogel examines the blessings of a B minus, staying up late, hangovers, breaking the rules, and a variety of other teen topics, urging parents not just to look on the bright side, but to help kids benefit from the learning opportunities inherent in difficult situations. Some of her advice may be challenging for readers to follow: for instance, she recommends that parents refrain from broaching the subject of college until grade 11. She also encourages parents to let teens learn from their own mistakes and to respect their yetzer hara (aggressive impulse), while seeking balance with a sense of teshuvah (repentance). Mogel's compassion and authenticity will ring true with parents of all faiths facing the tumultuous teen years. (Oct.) (c)

Review
“Wendy Mogel's signature humor, humility and wisdom are back in full force in "The Blessing of a B Minus, "which will bring much-needed sanity to parents of teens. Hers is the voice that every parent dreams of finding while wading through the confusion of childrearing today: calm, knowing, empathetic and informed both by professional knowledge and personal experience. Her insights are infused with a widely appealing kind of faith that will strike a universal chord in parents seeking both a moral and practical compass. This is a book that will be re-read over and over again.”

--Judith Warner, author of "Perfect Madness" and "We’ve Got Issues"

“Wise, witty and well-written, this book is a treasury of common sense for anyone dealing with adolescents.”

--Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of "When Bad Things Happen to Good People"

“In this remarkably frank, helpful book Wendy Mogel offers practical advice and comforting perspective on all the issues, large and small, that families of all faiths and backgrounds confront as their children move through adolescence. Here is a voice of humor, reason, and compassionate sanity in a culture driven by hyper-competitiveness, hyper-vigilance, and hyper-activity. "The Blessing of a B Minus" inspires and consoles. Most importantly, this very readable book gives us the tools we need to become more conscious, confident parents. This is not Jewish wisdom, it is human wisdom, and I for one am a most grateful recipient.”

“Wendy Mogel’s ability to make old wisdom new is uncanny. She is herself a wise woman. The parents of America – and therefore the children, too – should be grateful for her.”

Living graciously with chronically rude teenagers.
By John F. Lehman
A book with the year's best title just happens to be the best book on parenting teens. It purports to use Jewish teachings to raise resilient teenagers, but whether or not that is the source of this life-saving wisdom, as a parent of former teenagers (they are now in their forties), I can't praise this books message enough. In fact, instead of nitpicking, let me give you some of its invaluable conclusions:

1. Bizarre teen behavior, so annoyingly not in line with your dreams and plans, is a sign that your teen's unique personality is unfolding.
2. Teenaged rudeness is a paradox. It lets you know that your teen is trying desperately to separate from you and that your are the "safe" person who can receive their frustration with not yet being all grown up.
3. One of the ways teens learn about the importance of hard work is by suffering the consequences of their procrastination and laziness.
4. Materialism and self-centeredness are normal during this period of rapid and shifting identity. Just as a pregnant woman focuses inward, adolescents are preoccupied as they give birth to themselves.
5. When teens break the rules, or even the law, it is often because they aren't satisfied with a merely rote knowledge of our ethical system. They want to know if adults mean what they say.
6. Teens getting into hot water provides an excellent opportunity for learning self-reliance: how to solve problems and how to mine difficult circumstances for their benefits.
7. Staying up late is sometimes a teen's shot at independence, and goofing around is a way to ease the stresses of growing up.
8. Finally, limited experimentation with alcohol, physical intimacy, and even drugs teaches teens how to regulate these powerful experiences and keep themselves safe while they are still under your guidance.

"In other words," as the author says in an interview, "teens have to do a lot of dumb stuff in order to get smart."

spirited, spiritual, insightful, and practical
By hmf22
I read Wendy Mogel's Blessing of a B Minus as a teacher, rather than a parent, of teenagers. It's a wonderful book, one that truly respects teenagers' intellectual and moral capacities and the inherent difficulties of their quest to individuate and develop adult value systems. While The Blessing of a B Minus is primarily a book about how to relate, advise, and discipline, it also points adults towards the opportunities for spiritual and personal growth that arise from parenting (or even working with) adolescents. I found it absorbing and inspiring.

Mogel emphasizes many ideas I wish I could share with the parents of my students. I especially appreciated her discussion of the importance of respecting teenagers' individual personalities, tastes, and strengths. I also liked her emphasis on how work--whether in the form of chores, babysitting, tutoring, or a conventional summer job--can cultivate self-respect and problem-solving ability. Though Mogel includes only a little scientific material on brain function, what she does cite is quite illuminating. Her conclusion that "If you think of your teen as ping-ponging between the ages of five and thirty-five, his behavior won't seem so odd" (22) matches my own experience with this age group, as does her assertion that teenagers often act up towards their parents while simultaneously displaying great maturity at school and in other public situations, because home is a safe place for a person who is ready to be an adult most of the time, but not all of the time, to regress a little.

This book is every bit as wonderful as Mogel's Blessing of a Skinned Knee, and it's written in very much the same spirit. I can't wait to see what Mogel writes next!

Outstanding Guide to Raising Teens w/Love, Respect, Patience!
By Jerald Lazar
As a big fan of Dr. Mogel's previous book (Blessing of a Skinned Knee), I approached this new one with high expectations, and was not disappointed...
Thank you again, Dr. Mogel, for sharing such sage advice -- with humor and compassion. This is truly a delightful read, from start to finish, and as with her first volume, I'll be consulting it frequently -- and recommending to all parents of teens... It's filled with marvelous relevant real-life examples, mixed with Talmudic wisdom and illuminating metaphors that make you realize you are not alone on this parenting journey, with all its trials and tribulations... Dr. Mogel offers sane, level-headed approaches to navigating the teen years, when all societal forces seem to be working against you... Especially as a single parent, I felt like Dr. Mogel is a valued ally... Her credentials are sound, having studied not only psychology, child development, and pertinent Judaic teachings, but also having successfully raised two teen daughters herself -- and, despite all her grounding and training, finding herself as bewildered by these strange rude creatures as most of us who are even less professionally prepared for the onslaught of adolescence... A common refrain among parents these days is, "We would have never gotten away with that behavior when we were that age" -- which is true... But times have changed, and we need new rules, guidelines, parameters, approaches -- that are neither too permissive nor too authoritarian... We're up against ubiquitious videogames (and other "inappropriate" time-wasting entertainment), increasing academic pressures, and a scary economic outlook, not to mention a slew of temptations and dangers that weren't around when we were kids ... Dr. Mogel patiently , and even humorously, walks us through prescriptive scenarios designed to not only reduce family friction and anxieties, but to help reshape our own attitudes so that we won't be constantly despairing about our kids' behaviors ... I can't tell you how many times I recognized my kids -- and myself -- in this book... and I'm sure you will, too... I kept re-purchasing "Skinned Knee" because everyone I lent it to ended up keeping it, and I'm sure the same will happen with "B-minus"... So please do me a personal favor, and go buy your own copy!... You won't regret it!...

Hurricane Season: A Coach, His Team, and Their Triumph in the Time of Katrina, by Neal Thompson

"There's always a point in the season when you're faced with a challenge and you see what you're capable of. And you grow up." —J. T. Curtis, head coach, John Curtis Christian School Patriots On Saturday, August 27, 2005, the John Curtis Patriots met for a grueling practice in the late summer New Orleans sun, the air a visible fog of humidity. They had pulled off a 19-0 shutout in their preseason game the night before, but it was a game full of dumb mistakes. Head coach J. T. Curtis was determined to drill those mistakes out of them before their highly anticipated next game, which sportswriters had dubbed "the Battle of the Bayou" against a big team coming in all the way from Utah. As fate played out, that afternoon was the last time the Patriots would see one another for weeks; some teammates they'd never see again. Hurricane Katrina was about to tear their lives apart. The Patriots are a most unlikely football dynasty. Theirs is a small, nondescript, family-run school, the buildings constructed by hand by the school's founding patriarch, John Curtis, Sr. In this era of high school football as big business with 20,000-seat stadiums, John Curtis has no stadium of its own. The team plays an old-school offense, and Coach Curtis insists on a no-cut policy, giving every kid who wants to play a chance. As of 2005, they'd won nineteen state championships in Curtis's thirty-five years of coaching, making him the second most winning high school coach ever. Curtis has honed to a fine art the skill of teaching players how to transcend their natural talents. No screamer, he strives to teach kids about playing with purpose, the power of respect, dignity, poise, patience, trust in teamwork, and the payoff of perseverance, showing them how to be winners not only on the gridiron but in life, and making boys into men. Hurricane Katrina would put those lessons to the test of a lifetime. Hurricane Season is the story of a great coach, his team, his family, and their school—and a remarkable fight back from shocking tragedy. It is a story of football and faith and of the transformative power of a team that rises above adversity, and above its own abilities, to come together again and prove what they're made of. It is the gripping story of how, as one player put it, "football became my place of peace."

Press coverage of Katrina's devastation and the region's painful, halting recovery has justifiably focused on the big picture of housing, the economy, and the lack of an appropriate response from the federal government. But tucked away inside the larger story are vignettes of perseverance and triumph. The John Curtis Christian School is a small, private, and racially diverse institution known both for providing a good education and its status as a Louisiana football powerhouse under coach J. T. Curtis, also the school's headmaster. Veteran journalist Thompson's compelling account chronicles Curtis' struggles in the aftermath of Katrina to reopen the school and keep the football team—the school's public face—on the field. Although the text dwells overmuch on play-by-play reporting, it effectively dramatizes the players' and coaches' efforts to find housing, rehab their own damaged dwellings, and still find time for a successful football season. It's an inspiring story, thanks to the meticulously drawn context of the travails faced by average New Orleanians. Expect considerable interest, as an HBO film based on the book is in development. Review
""Hurricane Season" is a powerful book about who we are, and who we each strive to be. The story of Coach J.T. Curtis and his football team, it is also the song sung by real people succeeding to complete the mission each has been called to, often against seemingly impossible odds. I think this is a beautiful read for parents of both boys and girls, and I believe it's an especially powerful book for parents, mentors, and teachers of boys and young men." -- Michael Gurian, Author of "The Wonder of Boys" and "The Wonder of Girls"

"The concept of 'overcoming adversity' is certainly nothing new in the world of sports. Here, though, we see a truly extraordinary example of boys and men facing raw trauma and striking back with both passion and purpose." -- Jeffrey Marx, author of "A Season of Life"

"A rousing, well-told tale that is poignant and inspirational. With grace and beauty, Neal Thompson shows us that the human spirit cannot be conquered, even in the ashes of Katrina." -- Buzz Bissinger, author of "Friday Night Lights"

Amazing Comback!
By Karen Zemek
"Hurricane Season" is a true story about triumph through hardship for a private Christian school's football team in New Orleans overcoming the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and Rita. This book takes a personal look at the devastation that Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita caused within six weeks. It's about a High School football coach's and his players' commitment to their school and team in midst of chaos and turmoil. It's about how football can pull a community together. I particularly liked reading how the coach motivated his players and how he taught them to be men. It was heartwarming to see how much the coach loved his players and cared about their personal lives and not just how they played football.

Another aspect that really touched me was J.T.'s close relationship and admiration for his father. His father built the school and was a big part of the football team. After the father died, J.T. still thinks of him often and wishes he could still run things past him. He feels a real sense of responsibility to make his dad proud and run the school well.

The ending of the book is very moving and emotional when the team finally gets to play football after it looked like they wouldn't even have a season. As I read about the games, it felt like I was right there in the stands watching and cheering for them. This book started out slow and was pretty sad, but is definitely worth reading to get an inside look at what the people of New Orleans went through during Katrina and how a football team really jelled. It certainly made my few problems look totally insignificant in comparison.

A People Book
By Gerard F. Zemek
I can't say enough good things about this book!! This book is remarkable!! It tells the story about how people dealt with Hurrican Katrina and the aftermath and a remarkable man, J. T. Curtis, Head football coach and principal of the John Curtis Christian School. How he and his family brought together a school and the football team is an unbelievable story. Their story will make you cry, laugh and cheer!! I really enjoyed this book A LOT!!!

Celebrate the Bond of Sisterhood

When it comes to sisters, there's plenty to laugh about -- and this joyful book is filled with humorous stories about the special relationship that sisters share.

Sisters share secrets, sorrows, success, and sometimes silliness. It's this sense of sharing that brings sisters so close -- and in that closeness, there are all kinds of reasons to laugh.

You'll giggle and grin as you read stories from some of your favorite authors and comedians -- like Patsy Clairmont, Martha Bolton, Karen Scalf Linamen -- and new friends you'll delight in getting to know. Whether sisters by family, faith, or friendship, you'll find yourself -- and your sister -- reflected in stories of childhood antics, shopping trips, midnight heart-to-heart talks, and the many shared "oops!" of life.

Whether for yourself or your sister, this cheerful infusion of humor will bring joy to a day that's dreary and giggles to one that's already glorious.

Chapter One

Sisters Are There for You in a Pinch

Make My Day, Doughboy! by Karen Scalf Laramer

For some unknown reason, I was awake at 3 a.m. when my sister Michelle tiptoed past my bedroom door. I said, "Hey."

"Hey back." She poked her head in my room. "I'm glad you're awake. I heard a noise in the basement."

Ten months earlier, my two kids and I moved into a big old house in the woods and invited my sister and five-year-old niece to move in with us. No husbands orsons, just two single moms, our three daughters, and enough clothes to fashionably outfit a third-world country. Now the dark basement of that big oldhouse was making weird noises in the middle of the night.

I threw on a robe and we tiptoed down the stairs, through the main hall, around the corner, and peered down the basement stairwell.

I whispered, "What did you hear?"

"I heard scratching. It was so loud I thought it was you."

I frowned. "Just how loud do I scratch?"

"I think we need a weapon."

"Curling iron? Stilletos? Cheez Whiz?"

Michelle smacked palm to forehead. "Gun!"

Michelle's former husband, Russ, had been a police officer. Of course there would be a gun. I followed her into the office and watched as she tried to remember the combination to the fire safe. Eventually she gave up, rocked back on her heels, and looked at me. At the exact same moment we both said, "Rolling pins!"

It's amazing we even own rolling pins. After all, we are a household run by two single moms. We don't have husbands to keep in line, and we don't have time to bake from scratch. Nevertheless, five minutes later we were armed and dangerous.

Michelle said it well. Brandishing her rolling pin she shouted, "Hey, whoever you are -- we're armed and dangerous!"

I sighed. "The Pillsbury Doughboy is quaking in his boots. Look, maybe we shouldcall the police. Sure, we could go down together into the dark basement, clutching each other, flashlight in one hand and rolling pin in the other, but, frankly, I've seen those movies and it never ends well."

She saw my point. We called 911, and ten minutes later we spotted flashlight beams darting around the house. When we answered a rap at the door, three officers filled the hallway. Michelle btold them what she'd heard, and they disappeared into the bowels of the house.

We waited.

I sat cross-legged on the floor of the hall in my terry-cloth robe. Michelle saton the bottom step of the stairs leading to the bedrooms where our daughters slept soundly. There were three men in our basement. Four if you counted the intruder. Or maybe three men and a squirrel. Michelle was still holding the rolling pin and wearing fuzzy slippers. Now that we no longer needed to protectour children with a baking implement, this suddenly seemed like an awfully exciting thing to be doing at 3:42 a.m. Adrenaline high and danger on the wane, we began to giggle. I admitted, "I called the police once like this when I was living in California. I kept hearing noises on the porch. The cop searched the outside of the house for ten minutes, then rang the bell to give me the news. Turns out I'd put a bag of trash on the front porch and some animal had been digging through it. Boy, did I feel stupid."

Michelle laughed. "When Russ was a rookie cop, he was doing a patrol check on a vacant house that was under construction, when he really had to pee. The plumbing was working, but none of the rooms had doors yet. As he's standing there taking care of business, it dawns on him that someone could sneak up behind him, so he draws his gun. Sure enough, he hears something behind him and whips around, a gun in one hand and, well...let's just say he had both handsfull. I guarantee that electrician will think twice before showing up early for work ever again!"We laughed, exchanged more stories, laughed until we cried. We hadn't howled like this in months.

Michelle and I grew up happily together in Downey, California. Six years apart, we had rarely argued and were the best of friends. Moving in together twenty years later as adults should have felt familiar and predictable. Instead, the transition had proven a little more interesting than that. As it turns out, Michelle enjoys planning ahead while I, more often than not, am flying by theseat of my pants. She loves lunches downtown while I prefer grilled cheese at home. She likes to plan intimate soirees with close friends, while I regularly invite hordes of acquaintances to drop in anytime they're in the state of Colorado.

Circumstantial stress had taken its toll as well: We'd each had our hearts broken. Finances had been tight. Merging two households into one had been a major undertaking. And on top of everything else, our old house in the woods kept handing us interesting challenges like a flooded basement, beehives by thefront door, and cell phone reception so unreliable as to be considered a myth bymany who knew us.

Yep, we hadn't laughed like this in a very long time.

Eventually the officers reappeared to report that our basement was secure. They had no idea what Michelle had heard, but they were certain we were safe. They returned to their beat, and Michelle and I returned, lighter-hearted, to our beds.

Still--

Whenever life throws me a curve, whenever I feel tired or discouraged or alone, I think of an image from that night and I have to laugh.

It's the image of two sisters clutching each other, walking bravely into the unknown -- pointing a flashlight into the darkness and waving rolling pins. Afterall, sometimes things go bump in the night. Sometimes they go bump in your life.A sister by your side can make all the difference in the world. The fuzzy slippers are optional.

Extremely entertaining and thought provoking
By Jason Frost
I became a fan of Brad Thor after I read 'The First Commandment' and could not wait for his next one. There was a very nice lady at Simon & Schuster who heard my cry and sent me a copy of this one and it did not disappoint!! Of course this one will catch a little flack because it raises some questions about the religion of Islam and questions the validity of Muhammad and the Koran. I loved how Brad interwove history in with the story and about just how long this war with some of the homicidal, radical Muslims has been going on. This is a mystery, suspense, thriller rolled up in one!

I love authors who have that special "it" that make you keep reading and reading and makes you take an extra 5 minutes on your lunch just so you can finish the chapter. The kind of writing that actually makes you tell your wife, "Hold on baby I'll hook you up after I finish this page!" Yeah, this book is THAT good! This will definitely be one of the best political-thrillers you'll read this year and will, if you aren't already, make you a die-hard fan of Mr. Thor!!

I'm not a big non-fiction reader but I love history. So I really appreciate when an author takes history and makes it fun, interesting, and not so freaking boring! I know authors (including this one) take liberties with history and the re-telling of it, but I can live with that because it just makes me go out and see if what they say is true. Did our former Presidents know about the Muslim invasions BEFORE this country was even a country? Did Adams and Jefferson know something and leave us clues to help us? Did our forefathers know how completely stupid, impotent, and P.C. our leaders would be (have) become?

I say YES to all 3 but you'll have to read this book and do your own research to figure that out. Either way 'The Last Patriot' is one heck of a book and a must read for this summer and seasons to come.

Thor KNOWS how to write a controversial thriller...and this is IT
By Jeff Edwards
The character of Scot Harvath has been one of my recent favorites in the last 3-4 years since discovering Thor's books, and 'The Last Patriot' virtually cements this bold character into (at least MY version) of great leading Action/Adventure Hero's.

Controversy is nothing new to Brad Thor by any means...however, with that said, I believe he is courting a whole new set of problems, or seriously potential problems with the storyline here. Religion in general is a very touchy subject, but as we have seen over the last decade or so, even fictionalizing specific events in Muslim History can be viewed as MAJOR Blasphemy--the kind that involves life-threatening retaliation. Don't believe me? Anybody remember Salmon Rushdie's 'Satanic Verses'? 'Nuff said. I heard an interview done with Thor on Glenn Beck and I'm not the only one concerned here. I honestly feel that if somewhere, sometime soon if I read about Brad Thor being the target of Terrorists, well, let's just say it won't surprise me (read the book and you'll understand).

The book, though is a hum-dinger of a story. Easily Thor's best-to-date. Like other reviewers, I like when events in history are tied in with current storylines, and I REALLY like it when its done right...and I am happy to say Thor really nails it with this latest installment. Action on top of intrigue firmly attached to a healthy dose of adrenaline mixed with a Titanic-sized load of action and you have an idea of how well constructed 'The Last Patriot' truly is. I have enjoyed these books a lot since I first began them, but this one seriously places the bar at a level that is amazingly high compared to the previous Tales of Scot Harvath--and THEY were great, if that tells you anything.

One thing I enjoy in particular about Harvath is that no matter how death-defying his exploits end up being, I always find myself thinking that were I under similar circumstances, and I had Scot's talent, what Thor describes is pretty much dead-on with how I feel I would act and say--or at least what I'd like to THINK I would act and feel if our roles were reversed--which I am glad they aren't.

For those who are fans of how Cussler takes historical events and weaves a seamless tale of adventure into a modern tale of action, you honestly owe it to yourself to give Brad Thor a try--and while you don't HAVE to start at the beginning to appreciate each book, I personally feel that by starting with 'The Lions of Lucerne' you will get a much better appreciation not only for the character of Scot Harvath, but you will get a ringside seat to Thor's growing talent for storytelling that just gets better with each book...no REALLY.

Kudos to Thor for not just a good addition to this series, but EASILY the best to date by a country mile...and that's saying a LOT.

exhilarating thriller
By A Customer
Former Navy SEAL thirty-seven year old Scot Horvath has left Homeland Security to get out of the covert operations business and start a fresh new life away from mass murdering terrorists who claim their ideology is blessed by God. He wants a normal life and feels as he closes in on forty undercover operations is a younger persons game. He also remains shook up that his significant other former Naval Explosive Ordinance Technician Tracy Hastings lost an eye and almost her life and almost died at the hands of some rabid avenging assassin.

They talk at a Paris café when Scot notices an Arab setting off an IED that targets University of Virginia Professor Anthony Nichols, who as he vanishes turns out to be a lot more than a highly regarded history teacher. The two retirees soon learn of the discovery of a seventh century version of the Koran in which the Prophet Mohammed informed his disciples of a radically different vision than that found in the Koran of today; if the lost revelation is published the Jihad extremists would lose much of their religious claims. Clues lead to President Jefferson's war on the Tripoli pirates and the third president's notes in an original copy of Don Quixote. Although they expect to learn more investigating Monticello, the American in Paris and President Jack Rutledge must end their estrangement caused by the incidents in his last assignment (see THE FIRST COMMANDMENT) while the Muslim extremists want the two Americans stopped.

This is an exhilarating thriller mindful of the Da Vinci Code but different that will hook the audience from the moment that Scot and Tracy learn of the lost revelation and never slows down until the final incredible spin. A critical key to this engaging tale is that the romantic relationship between the lead couple is limited as the inquiry and safety supersede everything. Brad Thor provides a strong insightful tale that links seemingly unconnected historical dots leading to the contemporary sleuthing by Scot and Tracy; accompanied by enthralled fans of the series.
