The House at Riverton: A Novel, by Kate Morton

The House at Riverton is a gorgeous debut novel set in England between the wars. Perfect for fans of Downton Abbey, it is the story of an aristocratic family, a house, a mysterious death and a way of life that vanished forever, told in flashback by a woman who witnessed it all and kept a secret for decades.

Grace Bradley went to work at Riverton House as a servant when she was just a girl, before the First World War. For years her life was inextricably tied up with the Hartford family, most particularly the two daughters, Hannah and Emmeline.

In the summer of 1924, at a glittering society party held at the house, a young poet shot himself. The only witnesses were Hannah and Emmeline and only they -- and Grace -- know the truth.

In 1999, when Grace is ninety-eight years old and living out her last days in a nursing home, she is visited by a young director who is making a film about the events of that summer. She takes Grace back to Riverton House and reawakens her memories. Told in flashback, this is the story of Grace's youth during the last days of Edwardian aristocratic privilege shattered by war, of the vibrant twenties and the changes she witnessed as an entire way of life vanished forever.

The novel is full of secrets -- some revealed, others hidden forever, reminiscent of the romantic suspense of Daphne du Maurier. It is also a meditation on memory, the devastation of war and a beautifully rendered window into a fascinating time in history.

Originally published to critical acclaim in Australia, already sold in ten countries and a #1 bestseller in England, The House at Riverton is a vivid, page-turning novel of suspense and passion, with characters -- and an ending -- the reader won't soon forget.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, April 2008: In her cinematic debut novel, Kate Morton immerses readers in the dramas of the Ashbury family at their crumbling English country estate in the years surrounding World War I, an age when Edwardian civility, shaken by war, unravels into the roaring Twenties. Grace came to serve in the house as a girl. She left as a young woman, after the presumed suicide of a famous young poet at the property's lake. Though she has dutifully kept the family's secrets for decades, memories flood back in the twilight of her life when a young filmmaker comes calling with questions about how the poet really died--and why the Ashbury sisters never again spoke to each other afterward. With beautifully crafted prose, Morton methodically reveals how passion and fate transpired that night at the lake, with truly shocking results. Her final revelation at the story's close packs a satisfying (and not overly sentimental) emotional punch. --Mari Malcolm

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This debut page-turner from Australian Morton recounts the crumbling of a prominent British family as seen through the eyes of one of its servants. At 14, Grace Reeves leaves home to work for her mother's former employers at Riverton House. She is the same age as Hannah, the headstrong middle child who visits her uncle, Lord Ashbury, at Riverton House with her siblings Emmeline and David. Fascinated, Grace observes their comings and goings and, as an invisible maid, is privy to the secrets she will spend a lifetime pretending to forget. But when a filmmaker working on a movie about the family contacts a 98-year-old Grace to fact-check particulars, the memories come swirling back. The plot largely revolves around sisters Hannah and Emmeline, who were present when a family friend, the young poet R.S. Hunter, allegedly committed suicide at Riverton. Grace hints throughout the narrative that no one knows the real story, and as she chronicles Hannah's schemes to have her own life and the curdling of younger Emmeline's jealousy, the truth about the poet's death is revealed. Morton triumphs with a riveting plot, a touching but tense love story and a haunting ending. (Apr.)

I loved this book
By Kona
In 1914, fourteen-year old Grace came to Riverton Manor as a housemaid. There she met the Master's grandchildren, whose lives would forever be linked with her own. Now 98, Grace looks back at those early years of duty, selflessness, and silence.

To give away more of the plot would be to rob other readers of the sublime delight I found in reading this book. It is told through the eyes of an old lady who has known great sorrow and some joy, who has seen Edwardian society give way to hard rock and managed to adapt to it all with wisdom and humor. The story paints a vivid picture of life among the idle rich before and after the first War, how carefree children became conflicted adults, and how passion erupted in gunfire one grand summer night.

The author has written such a wonderful story I sobbed through the last chapters, not wanting it to end. It would make a great movie - it's powerful, dramatic, and heartbreaking, equal parts of mystery, romance, and history - and is the best book I've read in a long time.

Deliciously Engrossing!
By Mary Lins
The first two lines of "The House at Riverton" by Kate Morton, are an homage to "Rebecca" and then the novel is reminiscent of "Remains of the Day", "Gosford Park", "The Great Gatsby" and other gothic and romantic novels...all acknowledged by the author in the Afterward. All this makes Morton's first novel deliciously readable, engrossing and fun. She takes the tried and true literary motif of an elderly woman, Grace, recounting the story of her life with heavy hints at a few gothic secrets to be revealed in due course. And it works beautifully! I used to love reading these kinds of stories when I was young; who didn't? Thus it was a wonderful treat to find this gem of a novel which completely captivated me for several days. Yes, one can have a first person narrator who is also omniscient when she is a servant; ubiquitous yet silent, hearing and seeing almost all.

I won't recount the plot or slip in any spoilers, but I want to make note of what a wonderful job Morton does of depicting the unraveling of the constricting social mores after WWI, especially for women and for the service class as they shed the oppression of the Victorian age and entered the "Roaring 20s" with its bohemian and jazzy style.

There are the usual and expected "errors of birth" that we won't be terribly surprised by...we know some secrets before Grace figures them out herself, but one is saved for the end and nicely slipped in.

"The House at Riverton" has been a best seller in England and Morton's homeland, Australia, and I can understand why; I expect it will do very well here in the US, too, as we are endlessly fascinated by tales of British high society and all the intricacies of the upstairs/downstairs ways of life. I will anxiously await Morton's next novel!

Upstairs/Downstairs Charm and Haunting Mystery Combine for Compelling Novel
By Antoinette Klein
It's hard to believe this magnificent novel is a first effort by Kate Morton. I will certainly be looking forward to her future work, as this is a well-crafted narrative that exposes a story from the past through the remembrances of ninety-eight-year-old Grace Bradley.

A scandalous tragedy at a lavish English party in 1924 is about to be made into a movie and, as the last surviving person from the event, Grace is interviewed by a dedicated young filmmaker. The filmmaker wants to be clear on all details of a young poet's suicide and present an accurate portrayal. Only Grace knows that history in not correct and what everyone thinks happened did not happen at all. She has kept the secret for over 70 years and it has haunted her memory.

Morton does a masterful job of taking the reader into the lives of the idle rich, the servants who are devoted to them, and the secret liaisons that connect the two classes in forbidden ways. The conflict between desire and possibility is played out generation after generation.

The unreliability of accepted facts, the haunting of the present by the past, and the inescapability of inherited social standing determining one's fate all combine for a searing story I could not put down.

The characters are wonderfully three-dimensional, the plot well-paced and highly believable, the explosive conclusion well worth the time invested. I cannot recommend this one highly enough and can only hope Kate Morton continues to gift us with her talent for storytelling.

That fact hasn't stopped women everywhere from obsessing over their weight -- specifically, that portion of it resting on their asses. In this gleefully frank new book, Janette Barber and Laura Banks lampoon society's obsession with the gluteus maximus while offering solidarity, support, and inspiring advice to fellow B-FABs (Big Fat Ass Babes). Embracing Your Big Fat Ass encourages readers to accept and love every inch of themselves -- including the lumpier parts.

What's in a Word?

LB: Co-Founding Member Confessional

If the name of this book offends you in any way, Janette and I are not sorry. We are writing this book to make friends, to meet many of you, and have some great tailgate parties on the road, but there is simply no other title that would work for this book. "Embracing Your Big Fat Behind?" "Embracing Your Big Fat Bottom?" Maybe in reviews of this book in magazines and on TV our title will look like this: Embracing Your Big Fat A**. Maybe they'll try to bleep us when we use the word on the local news in Tallahassee. Janette loves the word ass, among other more descriptive terms. By using a profanity -- granted, on the lower end of the profanity spectrum, in our opinion -- we give the book the "bite" it needs. That's why the word works. It has a bit of snarl to it.

There was an actual event that led to this title. It came about in the summer of 2002. A friend of mine, Carol, came storming into my apartment, slammed my front door, and walked into my kitchen. Carol is a beautiful woman, very turned out with gorgeous designer clothes, a luxury sports car, and a fancy Fifth Avenue job in New York City as an executive secretary. She even has a secretary. She's a secretary with a secretary. Anyway, Carol goes to the gym at least five days per week and has a great body to show for it. Her apartment overlooks the Hudson River with mirrors on the entire wall in the living room reflecting magnificent water views. It's breathtakingly gorgeous. Bottom line: she's a perfectionist in many areas of her life so it couldn't have been easy for her when she finally broke down, looked me square in the eyes, and after a brilliantly crafted pause said, "I give up. I just have to accept the fact that I have a fat ass." I laughed so hard I thought I would pass out. I felt like I had been hit in the ass by a bolt of lightning.

Another factor in the equation was that when Carol zapped me with this declaration of resignation and acceptance of her ass, I was reading the book Embraced by the Light, by Betty Eadie. The book is about Betty almost dying and what she experienced while moving toward "the light," being lifted above mortal concerns into a safe place of peace, understanding, and acceptance. That's when I got it; having a fat ass is like having a near-death experience. You just have to keep breathing and move toward the light, only in this case it's the light coming from the refrigerator.

Fast-forward to 2006 and I still hadn't done anything with this title. I finally worked up the courage to call Janette, fearful that she would think I was crazy to want to write an entire book about my rear end. But she was perfect for the project because she's a hysterically funny writer, and I also knew she had wrestled with her ass in the past. No one would be more capable than Janette to wax poetic on this very weighty subject. When I called her on the phone and told her the title, I had never heard her laugh so hard in my life. I thought that was a good sign.

We're attacking one of life's biggest jokes, one of its deepest injustices -- that constant pain in our hearts about not being pretty enough on the outside to find love for ourselves on the inside. Janette and I are not anthropologists. We hold no degrees in science or nutrition. We hold our own self-proclaimed Doctorate in Self-Loathing with a Minor in Using Food for Emotional Control. We've graduated. This is our thesis. It's more than jokes. This is the story of our asses. We've included our real-life confessionals so that you can see how we became who we are.

It's our mission to spread the word: Love your asses. Love yourself. There is no reason to be unhappy anymore. Life should be lived as if it were a near-death experience every day, 'cause if it were, would you really be that concerned about your ass?

This book is so bad and so pathetic it is very hard to believe it got published. It is one very long bad joke with the same dumb punch line. It is not so much advice as it is sad self-deprecation. Close the window and back away from the computer.

I thought this would be a good light-hearted read, but I was absolutely disgusted. There is nothing redeeming about the book. Don't waste your money. It's poorly written, not funny, and extremely shallow.

It pretty much sucks! (spoilers)
By Liquid Diamonds
It started out interesting. I couldn't put it down at first. But it just got silly. I found Zipporah to be a daft, weak main character that just never comes to life at all.
I felt like there was all this build up and the mystery would be solved but it just turned out Karen was crazy?! Ridiculous.
The ending was highly disappointing. I couldn't believe it!
I felt puzzled and like it was unfinished. Loose ends weren't tied up.
I believe the ghostwriter is getting lazy. He's not sticking to the old formula and the books are suffering.
This was the worst book I've read that has the misfortune of having the wonderful V.C.'s name on it.
I really loved the Landry series, the Cutler series, The Logan series, the Hudson series, even the DeBeers books. I love a lot of what the ghostwriter HAS done.
It just seems that his best days are behind him.
It's all crap these days.
Maybe it's time to lay V.C. to rest once and for all.

worst ever
By Robin K
I love V.C. Andrews, but this book was just the worst. The ghostwriter did absolutely no justice to her. By the second page I knew I wasn't reading her work. The plot itself was good, but the details given to bring it to life were few and far between. The writer did nothing to help you understand where the Karen character was coming from when it was finally revealed she was nothing but a sociopath. The ending was so abrupt I had to check to make sure I didn't skip any pages. What really got to me were all the inconsistencies in the story. Timelines did not unfold correctly; most notably the fact that the family was to take a trip on a saturday when, the tuesday before, the murder happens and by thursday the dad says he should call his mother to explain why they didn't make it on saturday, saturday hadn't even come and gone yet. Whoever proofread the book ought to be fired along with the ghostwriter. I was very dissappointed in this book, and am not sure I even want to read the next in this series.

Dull
By Jenny 8675309
This book was horrible. As a bibliophile, it pains me to say that, but it's the truth. I'm not a book snob, and I know how to appreciate a fun, fluffy read, but the writing in this book made it difficult to stomach. The previous reviewer was correct - the story lacked details, was dull, and really just plodded along. The ONLY reason I finished it was because I can't stand not to finish a book - I am always optimistic that it will somehow improve with the ending. This one did not.

I hate to be negative, but don't waste your time with this one. It's dull.

The Blood Sword Legacy

Bound by a brotherhood forged in the hell of a Saracen prison,
eight Blood Swords -- mercenary knights for William the
Conqueror -- set out to claim their legacies the only way they can:
by right of arms, by right of victory, by right of conquest.

For Sir Rohan du Luc, known as the Black Sword, enemies fall easily beneath his assault...until he comes face-to-face with a foe more worthy than any battle-hardened knight. Bold and courageous though she is, Saxon maiden Isabel of Alethorpe cannot stop Rohan de Luc from seizing Alethorpe and its people in the name of William the Conqueror. Then Rohan demands not just the manor, but Isabel herself. She vows that her heart will remain her own, even if she is forced to allow him to lay claim to her body. But while the lady's lips say no, Isabel's traitorous body is awakened to desire by the seductive attentions of this potent invader. Can she remain true to her Saxon heritage and her hopes that her brother may have survived the battlefield, or will Sir Rohan's skilled touch capture her unwilling heart as surely as his prowess with his sword captured her father's lands?

Compelling
By Baazumi
You never know what to expect when you pick up a new author, and this book was a great surprise. Having read many, many books on Highlanders its not often I come across something original. This is the story of a group of knights who were held prisoner in a Sacaren prison who formed a deep unbreakable bond and how their lives developed. While strong hardened warriors, these men are also intelligent and well-written characters, and the story is told with depth and passion. Really good writing skills, so much so I couldn't put it down and ordered her follow-up book "Master of Torment" which I couldn't put down either, and so now need to wait until the next release in the series in May.

On the Shoulders of Giants: My Journey Through the Harlem Renaissance, by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

From 1920 to 1940, the Harlem Renaissance produced a bright beacon of light that paved the way for African Americans all over the country. The unapologetic writings of W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey, the fervent fiction and poetry of Zora Neale Hurston and Langston Hughes, the groundbreaking art of Aaron Douglas and William H. Johnson, and the triumphant music of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong gave voice and expression to the thoughts and emotions that Jim Crow segregation laws had long sought to stifle. In On the Shoulders of Giants, indomitable basketball star and bestselling author and historian Kareem Abdul-Jabbar invites readers on an extraordinarily personal journey back to his birthplace, through one of the greatest political, cultural, literary, and artistic movements in our history, revealing the tremendous impact the Harlem Renaissance had on both American culture and his own life. Beginning with the rise of the Harlem Rens as pioneers of professional basketball, Karee

From Publishers Weekly
Former NBA superstar Abdul-Jabbar continues to pursue his inner historian (Brothers in Arms, A Season on the Reservation, etc.), using his childhood in the late 1940s to bring an engaging personal perspective to this cultural examination. Abdul-Jabbar does a fine job celebrating the already well-celebrated legacies of musicians like Bessie Smith and writers like Langston Hughes; what sets this book apart is Abdul-Jabbar's vantage from the waning edge of Harlem's cultural revolution, at a time when "white America ... was looking around for some other in vogue ethnic group" to excite their repressed urges. In a "call-and-response" format, Abdul-Jabbar alternates between straightforward history lessons and his personal take on them; thus, a chapter on "Master Intellects and Creative Giants" is followed by "How Harlem Writers Influenced My Life." Basketball fans will most enjoy Abdul-Jabbar's chronicle of Harlem's basketball team, the New York Renaissance Big Five, which in 1939 became the first black team to win a world professional title in any sport, paving the way for the integration of the ABL (forerunner to the NBA). Abdul-Jabbar's passion for history, literature and jazz, however, prove just as fundamental to the legendary Laker's journey, and this accessible, passionate account presents each "giant" as a vital part of Abdul-Jabbar's development and rise to fame.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is committed to leaving a legacy well beyond the basketball court. In his new book (after Brothers in Arms, 2004), the former Milwaukee Buck and Los Angeles Laker pays tribute to the black artists, activists, athletes, and intellectuals whose lives have shaped--and continue to shape--his own. In four sections that reflect his passions (Harlem, basketball, jazz, and writing), Abdul-Jabbar, with coauthor Obstfeld, views American history and his own life through the lens of the Harlem Renaissance, the flowering of black culture that took place in New York City after World War I. On the Shoulders of Giants celebrates the lives of such influential individuals as James Weldon Johnson and W. E. B. Du Bois and the extraordinary history of the first world-championship basketball team, the New York Renaissance Big Five. (Contrary to popular belief, the "Harlem Rens," as they were locally known, were the first all-black professional team, not the Harlem Globetrotters.) Abdul-Jabbar accompanies his insightful personal reflections with a wealth of lively anecdotes (like how the slippery dance floor of Harlem's Renaissance Casino and Ballroom became the site of the Harlem Rens' first games) and hundreds of poignant and powerful quotes. Among the latter are these words of charismatic--and controversial--Harlem Renaissance leader Marcus Garvey: "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without its roots." A thoroughly accessible and engaging mix of memoir and cultural history. Allison Block

"Richard Allen's voice has both gravitas and a conversational quality.... Allen's voice also reflects the love Abdul-Jabbar has for his subject." ---AudioFile

Inspirational
By Scott E. Walters
I teach a course on the art and artists of the Harlem Renaissance, and this has been the best "textbook" I have found to date. The chapters alternate between a historical descriptions of different aspects of the period (music, thinkers, geography, ect.) written by Abdul-Jabbar's co-author, and Abdul-Jabbar's descriptions of how the work of the Harlem Renaissance affected his life. This alternation between history and biography is what makes the book so inspirational, because Abdul-Jabbar makes very clear his belief that history should inspire present effort. The prose is dynamic -- a "good read." The added bonus of the sections on the Harlem Renaissance basketball team and its struggles connects sports, the arts, and politics in a very rich way. I recommend this book unreservedly.

From Publishers Weekly
Hamilton's acting image—a rich, preppy, Eastern WASP with a year-round suntan—is a far cry from his just folks childhood in the Arkansas town where he was born in 1939. Hamilton gives credit for this transformation, in this gossipy tell-all, to his charismatic divorced mother, Teeny, and inventive half-brother Bill, who taught him how to create the illusion of glamour on a budget. Hamilton also attended military and boarding schools, where a flair for comedy helped him adjust to his new surroundings. Once in Hollywood in 1959 and with a contract to star in Vincente Minnelli's Home from the Hill, Harrison acclimated to a life of jet-setting, detailing his risqué dating exploits and romances with Lynda Bird Johnson and Elizabeth Taylor. Hamilton is a witty raconteur and has a gift for capturing the flair of his mother, while exhibiting a genuine sense of humor about himself. (Oct.)

Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music, by Greg Kot

A decade ago the vast majority of mainstream music was funneled through a handful of media conglomerates. Now, more people are listening to more music from a greater variety of sources than at any time in history. And big corporations such as Viacom, Clear Channel, and Sony are no longer the sole gatekeepers and distributors, their monopoly busted by a revolution -- an uprising led by bands and fans networking on the Internet. Ripped tells the story of how the laptop generation created a new grassroots music industry, with the fans and bands rather than the corporations in charge. In this new world, bands aren't just musicmakers but self-contained multimedia businesses; and fans aren't just consumers but distributors and even collaborators.

As the Web popularized bands and albums that previously would have been relegated to obscurity, innovative artists -- from Prince to Death Cab for Cutie -- started coming up with, and stumbling into, alternative ways of getting their music out to fans. Live music took on an even more significant role. TV shows and commercials emerged as great places to hear new tunes. Sample-based composition and mash-ups leapfrogged ahead of the industry's, and the law's, ability to keep up with them. Then, in 2007, Radiohead released an album exclusively on the Internet and allowed customers to name their own price, including $0.00. Radiohead's "it's up to you" marketing coup seized on a concept the old music industry had forgotten: the customer is always right.

National radio host and critically acclaimed music journalist Greg Kot masterfully chronicles this story of how we went from $17.99 to $0.00 in less than a decade. It's a fascinating tale of backward thinking, forward thinking, and the power of music.

From Publishers Weekly
In what has become a growing field, Kot's account of the music industry's massive struggles and glimmers of success in the digital age stands out for its sturdily constructed prose and command of up-to-date facts. The narrative moves chronologically from the late 1990s to the late 2000s, pivoting deftly from such subjects as the havoc deregulation wreaked on mainstream radio, the recording industry's attempted shock and awe–style crackdown on downloading and the recent pay-what-you-want online selling model pioneered by Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. One of Kot's great strengths is that he is an able and passionate chronicler of the independent labels, musicians and critics whose rise in influence has been the definite upside of the old power structure's collapse. Kot gives us the first essential, critical account of the ever-expanding reach of the indie music Web site Pitchfork Media, a well informed analysis of the history and recent hyperdevelopment of sample-based music and self-contained portraits of new model artists such as Arcade Fire and Bright Eyes. The book thankfully avoids the technology and industry gossip possibilities inherent in the subject and instead focuses on the sometimes unexpectedly wonderful mutations in the way that musicians and listeners think about popular music. From Booklist
Kot, venerable pop-music reviewer for the Chicago Tribune and music blogger extraordinaire, brings readers up-to-date on how the “wired generation” changed the style of modern pop (as every generation does) and the way in which the stuff gets to fans. Along the way, he describes the near-demise of the big record labels (the chapter “Consolidated to Death” is particularly pithy), the online music downloading court skirmishes with consumers and bands alike (with special attention paid to Metallica’s contretemps with Napster), the waning influence of MTV, and bands bypassing corporate players to take their music straight to the audience via the Web. Notably, Radiohead and Metallica gave Kot access, and the results constitute the best summary of the huge recent changes in the business of pop to date. It’s too bad, perhaps, that the current state of the music biz makes it incumbent on a talented critic like Kot to consider the business side of the music more deeply than the artistic side of it, but that’s the situation, and Kot is up to explaining it. --Mike Tribby

Review
"A well-researched and highly opinionated history. . . . This book makes for provocative reading, but Kot is above all a music lover and that comes across nomatter which side of the issue you’re on.” (The Boston Globe)

“[Ripped] is the best kind of journalism, even-tempered and provocative, factual and soulful.” (Christian Science Monitor)

“Greg Kot tell us what happened . . . in his well-reported book about music in the Internet Age. . . . Kot understands that it’s always entertaining to detail the thrash and roar of a carnivorous dinosaur in its death throes, as small and clever mammals—in this case, music lovers—win the day.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“Thought-provoking . . . enlightening . . . [a] substantive examination of the chaotic music world.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“If you’re looking for a big-picture guide to music, and how you interact with it, right-this second, Ripped is a good way to go.” (Nylon magazine)

“Mr. Kot, who writes in an engaging but highly anecdotal style, does a nimble job of showing how the Internet has lifted the careers of particular musicians.” (Michiko Kakutani The New York Times)

"Kot is a talented critic." (Booklist)

“Stands out for its sturdily constructed prose and command of up-to-date facts. . . . The book thankfully avoids the technology and industry gossip possibilities inherent in the subject and instead focuses on the sometimes unexpectedly wonderful mutations in the way that musicians and listeners think about popular music.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Clear, concise and entertaining account of the tectonic shift in the recording industry over the past decade . . . Indispensable for anyone who wants to understand popular music in the 21st century.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“A perceptive, unblinking, and up-to-the-minute take on the seismic transformations of the recording industry in the digital age. . . Kot’s breezy, entertaining, journalistic style and sympathetic tone consistently draw in the reader. Essential for all those interested in the intersection of music and technology.” (Library Journal)

“An interesting book [that] details the sea change that’s choking big music studios and middleman and creating a landscape where smaller bands proliferate and manage to sustain themselves without the backing of music moguls.” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

"Informative and entertaining." (Huffingtonpost.com)

Interesting, but too narrow
By carlamudpie
Greg Kot is an interesting writer and tells many good stories. I sped through this book.

But what he offers here is less than what it should be. He digresses into band vignettes that, yes, I enjoyed reading but sometimes did not lead to a larger point (even though he tried).

He ignores the influence of satellite radio, eMusic, and the opinions of any listener older than those of Generation X (unless they are in the music business).

His focus is essentially the college rock world (for lack of a better term), and what those listeners are into. Meaning: hip-hop is discussed in reference to Kanye West, rap mix tapes are ignored, and forget what someone who listens to reggaeton, dancehall, metal etc might have to say about digital technology. Even though vinyl sales are a very small percentage overall, he fails to mention how they increased almost 100% (I believe) in 2007 or 2008. He doesn't delve into the fate of independent record stores, and how some of those still standing are doing pretty well (including my local favorite, Redscroll Records in Wallingford CT). He mentions some independent labels, such as Merge, but doesn't get into what keeps them running - how exactly are they doing it?

This will be very enjoyable for a certain type of music listener, but unfortunately does not have the larger-scale reporting and research I was hoping for.

Good background/analysis of the last 10 years of the music business
By T. Scarillo
Greg Kot is a good rock writer/reviewer, Chicago Tribune columnist, and is frequently published in Rolling Stone (as national magazines go), among other publications. His new book, "Ripped: How the Wired Generation Revolutionized Music", provides a good recap of the last ten years or so of the music industry, as concerns developments on the digital front. I found the book of particular interest, as I have worked in the music business in one capacity or another for almost 15 years and remember pretty much all of what's contained in the book. If you are not aware of, and want to learn about the music industry's recent digital developments, then this book is a very good way to get up to speed.

The chapters focus on key events/artists that were pivotal in the changing music business model over the last decade. Key events such as the rise of Napster (and the music industry's attempts to contain and destroy it, rather than embrace the technology and monetize it), Metallica's fight against Napster, the departure of established acts (Madonna, Radiohead, McCartney, Prince, NIN, et al.) from the major label system in favor of non-traditional music companies/doing it themselves, newer artists availing themselves of technology to reach their fans and `do it on their own' (such as Ani DiFranco, Bright Eyes, and others), the rise/domination of the Ipod and ITunes, and chapter bumpers of various interviewees' mindsets and insights into how they acquire music (eg. Some younger people either don't realize that they are violating a copyright/impacting someone's livelihood, with illegal downloading, or simply don't care). Some chapters are more interesting than others (which might depend on how familiar you are with the artists that Kot covers), though the book doesn't ever get bogged down in boring narrative, and it explains more-recent industry-specific concepts in easy to understand terms for the layman (though a prior understanding, on the reader's part, of the basics of the music industry's workings helps, but is not required).

Kot hits pretty much all the key events that we've seen in the last ten years or so, that have impacted the music industry business model. I'm not convinced there are any answers in this book as to where we're going to be in ten years, which is not necessarily Kot's fault (as he's fairly objective in reporting the circumstances), as the `new model' of the music business is still being created and the kinks of the `new order' are still being worked out. But what's going to happen in the next ten years or so, if older acts come off the road for good, and new acts don't develop? We'll likely hear endless complaints about how new music sucks and no major artists are developing (which is kinda what we're hearing now and have been for a while). I'd like to have seen more speculation on where we're headed. I've also spent a long time waiting for some writer, somewhere, to point out the disingenuous stance of a band like 2008's-independent-Radiohead, for example, that rails against major labels and gives little credit for the help they received along the way, while the 1993-baby-band version of Radiohead was probably only too happy to have a record deal, able to pursue their dream with a label supporting them at the beginning with marketing efforts, so that they could eventually get to the level they're at today (and be in a position to dictate their own future, as well as bad-mouth the system). That's more or less on p. 237, finally, though that point probably needed to be made a bit sooner in the book because it seems to be a key factor present in basically ALL superstar-level career arcs, particularly as they depart labels for DIY deals. Take the labels' money when young and hungry, get into `the machine', attain huge success, get jaded, then bad-mouth the company as having somehow hindered you every step of the way. My take away from what I read was that most of the acts who were nurtured and given two or three albums to develop and became long-term successes, today would probably be done if their first album didn't hit, and looking at barista careers. Unfortunately, the economics of the business might very well not allow for 3 chances these days. Are labels still necessary? Yes, probably, if an artist wants to reach a massive audience, because that's what major labels are geared toward, and because it's hard to get traction (not to mention visibility on traditional outlets, like late-nite shows) when EVERY band out there trying to do it on their own has a myspace page, sans higher-level marketing know-how and connections. It's a double-edged sword: the technology that empowers any/every band to promote itself and possibly actually earn a living doing what they love, is the same technology that overwhelms and inundates users with almost TOO MUCH unfiltered information. Was the industry wrong in not embracing Napster and nipping the problem in the bud, and monetizing it? Probably, but we're way past that at this point, as Kot points out (and I agree with). Now that the toothpaste is out of the tube, and the economics of the business have been turned upside down, who's going to make that marketing-intensive investment, if labels aren't around? It's hard to imagine that a band, doing it on their own via a website and without a label's muscle, will be able to reach the equivalent of being a 5-million seller, but that's probably NOT the object anymore, if they're netting more per download and able to sustain a touring career and fanbase, and make a living. The model is definitely changing, toward empowering the artist, as Kot illustrates effectively over and over in the book.

Everything has changed
By Thomas E. Davis
Greg Kot makes his point early and often: over the past decade, greedy executives perched at the summits of rapidly-consolidating media conglomerates lost billions of dollars in a clueless and futile campaign to keep music flowing through traditional pipelines. They delayed, dithered, or flat-out refused to adapt their business models to the paradigm-shifts of digital music and peer-to-peer file sharing, and other players rushed in to fill the vacuum.

Inherently unimaginative and terminally resistant to change, the music industry has typically released dull, homogenized product, together with a few perennial blockbusters, to generate revenue. Independent companies occupied tiny niches, while the major labels relied on a lucrative pay-to-play distribution system. They put effort into developing performers who showed profit potential and dropped any artist that didn't show a quick return.

Then came the revolution. The majors got their keisters kicked by angry musicians and bored consumers who used new technology to make their lives and their culture more interesting. CD prices dropped to nearly half of what they were ten years earlier. Even giants like Paul McCartney, Madonna, U2, and the Eagles finally jumped ship from their labels.

Not just record companies got hurt: so did artists, producers, publishers, concert promoters, radio stations, and CD stores that refused to adjust to the new reality. No longer do people learn about music from radio, MTV, Tower (which went belly-up in 2006), or conventional, established taste-makers. Now YouTube, iTunes, Amazon, blogs, zines, and independent media outlets are conduits for cultural buzz and the wealth it produces.

As befits the multi-headed hydra that is music nowadays, Kot has written an unusual, non-chronological hybrid of entertainment and economics reportage. He moves briskly and authoritatively, alternating between discussing the aesthetics of the music and examining the nitty-gritty of the market. While at times waxing eloquent in his analysis of the creative process and the stories of individual bands, most of his coverage is very concrete, a product of interviews with the artists and businesspeople in the trenches.

Kot offers quotes from musicians, insiders, and fans about how the industry has changed, how it works today, and how it's likely to evolve in the future. He contrasts forward-thinking acts like Tom Petty, David Byrne, The Beastie Boys, OK Go, R.E.M., Sinéad O'Connor, Lily Allen, Ani DiFranco, Björk, and Apple founder Steve Jobs with stodgy dinosaurs like Clear Channel, the RIAA, and Metallica, who made the mistake of suing Napster and their own best customers.

Entire chapters are devoted to specific performers and their stories: Arcade Fire, Conor Oberst, Death Cab for Cutie, Girl Talk, Prince, Wilco (about whom Kot wrote a whole book), and especially Radiohead each get in-depth profiles.

For those interested in the subject of music -- and that includes most young people -- this book is a fine introduction. Those not fascinated by popular music may choose to skip a few chapters that focus on groups they don't care for, but they'll have their eyes opened as to how entertainers are making money these days and how technology is changing the world of business and the world at large.

The Little Lady Agency and the Prince, by Hester Browne

Hester Browne created a unique heroine in Melissa Romney-Jones a.k.a. Honey, London's ultimate freelance girlfriend, who won the hearts of readers on both sides of the Atlantic in her "charming and feel-good"(Cosmopolitan) and "funny and original" (People) earlier adventures. Now her New York Times bestselling series sparkles brighter than ever as irrepressible Melissa is hired to reform a playboy prince -- and finds she could get used to the royal treatment.

Making plans for her wedding to American fiancé Jonathan Riley, who now runs a prestigious Parisian real estate company, Melissa agrees to do a favor for her beloved grandmother: transform the notorious Prince Nicolas von Helsing-Alexandros into a proper gentleman for the sake of preserving a family inheritance. Even possessive Jonathan agrees it's a great opportunity to make social connections. But taming a prince might prove too big a professional challenge for Melissa when she's confronting so many seismic changes in her own personal life.

Jonathan needs her in Paris. Her sister Emery's newborn son needs a christening ceremony, as well as a proper name. Emery herself needs Melissa -- to protect her from their bulldog nanny who's returned to do much more than babysit. Most unsettling of all, Nelson needs her to find him a new flatmate because she'll be moving out soon. Balancing all this with late-night dinners, polo matches, and a Mediterranean cruise with Prince Nicky, who is as charming as he is exasperating, suddenly has bride-to-be Melissa dreaming of a fairy-tale ending -- and not the one she expected!

From Publishers Weekly
Melissa Romney-Jones, recently returned from New York, where she got engaged in the last installment (Little Lady, Big Apple) to handsome Jonathan Riley, is a proper British fixer for the romantically impaired. Now she's knee-deep in royal slime after she agrees to turn smarmy prince Nicolas von Helsing-Alexandros into a perfect gentleman. In short order, Melissa slides into her alter ego, Honey, a powerhouse goddess in skin-tight pencil skirts and bust-enhancing tops that help keep Nicky, with his wandering eye and womanizing ways, focused on her and her makeover attempts. Meanwhile, as Melissa and Jonathan plan their wedding, Jonathan devolves from wonderboy real estate guru and dreamy hunk to a controlling jerk, leading Melissa to believe her trusty best friend Nelson could be the man of her dreams. Browne is in great form in this page-turning love story, and Melissa is as endearing and empowering as ever—the perfect lead for this contemporary fairy tale. (Feb.)

Enchanting Conclusion
By Kayanna
My sorrow at discovering I was on the last page of this book can only be compared to finding the Godiva chocolates consumed by a former friend. I know that many of the English aspects of the book do not translate well into American and feel fortunate to be an American raised in Hawaii living in Canada and thus able to put aside all former assumptions when reading this kind of fiction. Her horror of a family struck me as hilarious instead of co-dependent and vicious. It was such a relief to find Ms. Browne so aware of the absurdity of the central relationship of the series; the imbalance and dishonesty between the two characters seemed so farfetched. The author's insertion of the Prince angle was a classic recounting of the temptation of the fairytale ending. It was such a wonderfully English book, full of absurdity and wit, including the decaying family chapel redecorated by set designers for the christening! Thank you, Ms. Browne, and if you write more I will add them to my book collection next to the Austen, Angela Thirkell and Trollope.
