Intellectual Humor with a Touch of the Loo

The book is a gem and my title describing it as intellectual humor with a touch of the loo is apt...The English are wonderfully fastidious with the use of language. When combined with a sense of modesty, a wry British sense of humor and a penchant for understatement, one has a delightfully funny collection of snippets from the "London Review of Books" personals. The Brits who contribute to these personals go out of their way to make themselves seem both interesting and unattractive at the same time. Nothing here is close to "likes long romantic walks on the beach" that one finds in U.S. personals... these individuals all have warts ...real or imagined!

It is a wonderful holiday gift sure to evoke peals of laughter from any adult with a pulse.

What a cute coffee table book!

I absolutely adore this book. I keep it at work sometimes and read the ads to my co-workers to brighten up our day. They are absolutely hilarious! This is a really funny coffee table book - great for conversation.

The MacLeans are an ancient family, long of grace and fair of face. 'Tis a pity they know their own worth, fer it makes 'em difficult to bargain with. Shrewd they are; 'tis rare they come out on the bottom side of any bargain. Yer own pa says he'd rather be bit by a sheep than dicker with a MacLean.

Fiona MacLean forced herself to smile. "Father MacCanney, we've come to be married."

The heavyset priest looked uncertainly from Fiona to the groom and then back. "B-but -- he's not -- I canna -- "

"Yes you can, Father," Fiona said in her calmest voice, her hands fiercely fisted in the strings of her reticule.

Come hell or high water, she was about to end the longest, most drawn-out, and most foolish feud in all Scotland. And thereby lose her freedom, her carefully planned future, and perhaps even a bit of her heart.

The thought made her stomach sink lower. But this marriage was necessary if she wished to keep her brothers safe from their own foolish tempers. It's the only way. I cannot waver.

"Fiona, lass," Father MacCanney said in an exasperated voice, "he's not fit to be a groom!"

"All the more reason for me to marry the fool." At the priest's blink of surprise, she quickly added, "'Tis a known fact that a good woman can turn even the most contrary, rotten, stubborn ne'er-do-well into a responsible man."

The priest glanced uneasily at her prospective groom. "Aye, but -- "

"Have no fear for me, Father. I know he's no prize, but he's the one I want."

"Fiona, I know the lad might benefit from the match. 'Tis just -- "

"I know," she said, sighing bravely. "He's a philanderer who's been with every woman from the North Sea to the fleshpots of London."

The priest flushed at the mention of fleshpots. "Yes, yes. So everyone knows, but -- "

"He is also a complete wastrel who has made no effort to embrace a useful life. I know he's not the best choice of groom, but -- "

"He's not even conscious!" the priest burst out. "He canna even say his own name!"

Fiona glanced down to where her man, Hamish, had dropped her groom on the cold flagstone at her feet. Muddy rivulets dripped onto the church floor from Kincaid's clothing. "I was afraid that was your problem." Even unconscious, Jack was a royal pain. Some things never changed.

"Lassie, ye canna drag an unconscious man to the altar."

"Why not?"

"Because -- because 'tis just not done, that's why!"

The priest eyed Hamish with suspicion. Fiona's massive guard stood silently behind her as he'd done since she was a child. A large sword hung at his side, three primed pistols were stuck into his wide leather belt, his bushy red beard bristled, and his fierce gaze pinned them all in place.

"How did the lad come to be unconscious and muddy?" Father MacCanney asked pointedly.

Fiona hated to lie. She really did. But the less the priest knew, the safer he'd be from retribution from her brothers. Torn in pain at the loss of their youngest brother, they raged through Castle MacLean, fists lifted to the sky, fury pouring from them.

The curse of the MacLeans had flowed then. Rain and thunder had flooded from the skies for days, threatening those who lived in the village below Castle MacLean. The river had already been swollen from early spring rains, and the danger of flooding was imminent.

Fiona could not let that happen. And she knew how to stop the feud. First, she'd had to find Jack Kincaid. Thank goodness Hamish had heard rumors of his dalliance with some woman in nearby Stirling; it was simple to find the wastrel then.

She could only hope that the rest of her plan would follow so easily. Somehow, she greatly doubted she'd be so blessed. She shrugged and said with as much cheerful indifference as she could muster, "We found him."

"Unconscious?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"In the road. His horse must have bolted."

The priest did not look convinced. "How did the lad get so wet?" He eyed her with deep suspicion. "There's not been any rain in this part of Scotland in over three weeks."

Fiona had to distract him. "Hamish, can you awaken the lout? Father MacCanney will not marry us unless he's conscious."

Hamish grunted, then bent over, grabbed the unconscious Jack Kincaid by the hair, and lifted his head.

Fiona's gaze fell on his face, and her heart leapt. Even splashed with mud, his dark red hair plastered flat from the rain, Jack Kincaid was painfully handsome. Fine, firmly cut features with a strong jaw and masculine nose, deep auburn hair, and, had they been open, the blue, blue eyes of an angel.

But angel he was not.

In the distance, a faint rumble of thunder caused the priest to look toward the open windows. Outside, bright sunshine warmed the stone walls, nary a cloud in the blue sky.

Fiona's gaze remained on Kincaid. It took all of her moral strength not to kick him -- just a little -- while he was so conveniently at her feet.

Since that dark day fifteen years ago when she'd discovered Jack Kincaid's true nature, she'd kept her emotions and thoughts about him locked away. She'd thought they'd died, but apparently some anger and resentment remained.

Still grasping Jack's hair, Hamish shook his head, then looked at Fiona. "The jackass is not awakening."

"I can see that." Fiona sighed. "Let him be."

Hamish dropped his burden, ignoring the thud that made the priest wince.

Relief filled Father MacCanney's face. "Ye can't marry him, then."

"Yes, I can," Fiona said firmly. "He will awaken soon."

The priest sighed. "Ye are the most stubborn lass I ever met."

"Only when I must be. You cannot deny that 'twill be good for the lout to be in the care of a strong woman."

"No," Father MacCanney said in a constricted voice. "I canna deny that."

"I'll put up with neither drinking nor carousing. He will also be made to attend church regularly. Whether he knows it or not, Jack's wild days are over."

Something like pity flickered over the priest's face. "You canna make a person change, lassie. They have to want to change."

"Then I shall make him want to change."

The priest took her gloved hand in his. "Why do you wish to embark on this madness, lassie?"

"'Tis the only way to stop the feud. Callum's death must be the last," she said in a hard voice.

The priest's eyes had filled with tears. "I mourn your brother, too, lass."

"You cannot mourn Callum more than I. And as if his death is not enough to bear, my older brothers are calling out for vengeance. If someone does not stop this nonsense now -- " Her voice broke.

Callum, beautiful Callum. Her youngest brother, with his quicksilver grin and equally fast flashes of temper, was now lying six feet under, a stone marker the only reminder of his life. And all because of an idiotic feud that began hundreds of years ago.

The MacLeans and the Kincaids had been fighting for so long that no one remembered the true cause of their hatred. Now, because of Callum's stupid refusal to let a silly insult from a Kincaid slide, things had come to a head. Callum had pushed the argument, pushed the fight. And paid the price with his life.

One blow, the edge of the stone hearth...and that was it. Callum was dead, and the banked fires of the age-old feud had erupted into flames.

The priest pressed her hand. "I've heard that the Kincaids feel Callum's death was not their fault. That perhaps someone else -- "

"Please, Father. Do not."

The priest looked at her face. She knew what he was seeing: the circles under her eyes, the paleness of her skin, the tremor of her lips as she fought desperately to keep her tears at bay.

"Father," she said softly, "my brothers blame Eric Kincaid for Callum's death. Nothing I say can cool their thirst for vengeance. But if I marry Jack, he and his kin will be a part of our family. My brothers will be forced to let go of their plans." Her determined gaze locked with the priest's. "I will not lose another brother." Anger surged through her, raw and furious.

Outside, the ominous rumble of thunder darkened the otherwise clear day. Hamish nodded, as if agreeing with an unspoken thought. Father MacCanney, meanwhile, paled.

The priest was silent a long moment, and Fiona could see he was on the verge of agreeing. He just needed a little push.

"Besides, Father, if I make this sacrifice and marry to end the feud, it might break the curse."

Father MacCanney swallowed noisily and pulled his hand from her grasp. "Hsst, lass! I'll have none of that curse talk in this holy place."

That was because he believed it. According to the old tales, a white witch, disgusted with Fiona's great-grandfather's temper and self-serving ways, had declared that from then on, every member of the MacLean family would be given tenuous control over something as tempestuous as they were -- the weather.

Whenever a MacLean lost his or her temper, lightning caused thatched houses to catch afire and made the ground tremble. Hail tore away the leaves of every tree and greenery within sight. Floods roared through the valley, ruining harvests, washing away homes and, sometimes, people.

When the people of the village saw clouds gathering at Castle MacLean on the hill, they huddled in their houses in fear.

Fiona closed her eyes. They were her people. Hers. Just as Callum had been her brother. She could not fail in this. If she did not defuse the situation, her brothers' fury would unthinkingly destroy everything.

The only way to break the curse was for every member of a generation to perform a "deed of great good." So far, no generation had succeeded. Perhaps this would count as Fiona's deed.

Fiona looked at the priest from beneath her lashes. "The curse has been proven time and again, Father."

FIONA'S CURSE AND STORY

This is the first of two series that is written in the eras just before and after the turn of the 19th century although their family history is from the days of Robert the Bruce and each chapter begins with a contribution of "old Nora" telling some fact to her wee granddaughters. The Maclean family consisted of 5 brothers and one sister,Fiona. This is her story. The story opens with the news of the death of the youngest brother, Callum, at the hands of a member of the Kincaid family and the decree of the remaining brothers of a revival of a long standing feud. In an effort to prevent the feud she decides to abduct and force the head of the Kincaid family - "Black Jack" Kincaid - to marry her. One of the plot lines in this story is the fact that both the hero and heroine are of a 'mature' age. Fifteen years prior they were in the throws of a passionate relationship when she found out he had a mistress and she stopped the wedding. Now fifteen years later she finds herself married to a man who had covered his hurt with cynIcism and debaucery. While trying to prevent a worsening feud and find their own way into turning a forced marriage into a real marriage, the writer tells the story in a very real and honest form with the fun, the tenacity and "bumps in the road" that she does so well - as our hero and heroine navigate lilac scented storms and jaded ton members that include a former mistress and family enemy. This story tell of the power of trust and passion between two people who once meant everything to each other but torn apart by misunderstandings and interfering family members.

First Georgia Greenwood, controversial aspiring politician and second wife of the local doctor, is found dead at the edge of the vineyard, disfigured by chemicals used on the vines; then the young man alleged to be her lover disappears. Lucie finds motives abounding among the locals as she seeks the truth, but she's also concerned about losing her brash but capable head winemaker, worried about her younger sister's binge drinking, and becoming involved with a rich Brit who wants to buy a vineyard. This second entry in Crosby's series is nicely plotted and paced until the too-abrupt ending, when a previously sensible if overinquisitive Lucie goes alone to confront the murderer. A Tasty Read

The Wine Country Mystery series by Ellen Crosby is tops - and shows its worth with this second tale. Beginning with "The Merlot Murders," the author introduced a plot that suits a small-town setting, plus an insider's view of wine growing, served up with a witty dash of history. Yet, these are not cozies. Crosby's characters have flesh-and-blood qualities that whisper to our own foibles. In this second book, "The Chardonnay Charade," Lucie is struggling against a spring frost to keep her vineyard from freezing, when she discovers the lifeless body of a politician, well-laced with pesticide (there's a certain underlying symmetry here). On-the-job jealousies, a younger sister at flame-out age, and unraveling relationships contribute to Lucie's challenges in identifying the murderer. Crosby's writing is smooth and sure-handed as she develops characters and reveals each suspenseful step. All of which leads to a real-life mystery: When will we see the next book in this series? It's good stuff.

One day read

Once in a while I get an urge to read a mystery and this time Ellen Crosby's title caught my eye. I read it in one day, easily, and found it refreshing. Just enough detail to keep the story grounded without the boredom of too many technical details on vineyards, political campaigns, pesticides and other topics that would have bogged down any number of writers. Crosby deftly presented the story with a lovely set of characters and the action begins by the end of chapter one and keeps right on moving through the last chapter. I'll be searching out her other book and hope that she writes more.

Fun look at science, volume two

In 1994, the New Scientist started a column, The last word, devoted to everyday science questions asked by readers, with answers also provided by readers. Originally expected to survive for between one and five years, the column survived way beyond that and as far as I know, it is still going strong. Two books compiled from these columns didn't do much business but a third (Does anything eat wasps?) was a huge success. Its success prompted a subsequent volume (this one), that selects questions and answers from those two unsuccessful volumes and adds questions of more recent origin. A further volume, Do polar bears get lonely?, has also proved hugely successful.

This book consists of nine chapters covering our bodies, feeling OK, plants and animals, food and drink, domestic science, our planet and universe, weird weather, troublesome transport and, for questions that don't fit easily into any of those categories, best of the rest. Note that these chapter headings are slightly different from the previous volume. Two new ones (feeling OK, food and drink) have been added while our planet and universe are combined in one chapter here.

The question that gives the book its title provoked some very good answers explaining how penguins cope with life in the Antarctic, but there`s a more interesting (at least to me) penguin question elsewhere in the book. If polar bears and penguins swapped places, could they survive. The answer seems to be that polar bears would survive in the Antarctic but they would devastate the eco-system and penguins would be particularly vulnerable. Penguins might be capable of surviving in those parts of the Arctic where there are no polar bears, but there's another species that would make their life difficult - us. Attempts to establish northern penguin colonies have failed because people couldn't co-exist with them.

Another question that particularly grabbed my attention was what the time is at the North pole. It sounds easy but of course it isn't, since the pole is on Earth's axis and therefore not in any particular time zone. A variety of answers are supplied, some serious, some not. One of the serious answers explains how it would be possible, using astronomy, to set up some kind of clock, summing that you didn't take a clock or watch with you. One of the less serious answers points out that Father Christmas lives there and, it being in no particular time zone, explains how he is able to deliver all his presents so quickly. Another answer suggests that the North Pole is the true spiritual home of all politicians, because the time can be whatever you want.

The variety of the questions asked and the answers provided is incredible, although I confess that I wouldn't have actually considered asking most of these questions. While this book provides very informative answers, I suspect that you'll have most fun with it if you share it with family and friends.

Mostly stupid answers

I thought this would be a book with real scientific answers to trivial, everyday phenomena. What I got was a book with a question, followed by a bunch of answers from mostly morons who obviously don't have a clue. Those responses are, luckily, pretty easy to spot, but why should I have to even glance over them? The answer is likely so the author could get his page count to over two hundred.

Anyone can come up with a stupid answer to questions like, "Why do some people sneeze when exposed to bright light." If you want a serious answer, you unfortunately have to sort through a bunch of crap written by people who couldn't make it as comedians.

You may end up identifying the correct answer, if there is one, or you may not. The really disappointing part of it is that, because of all the silly responses, you never really know.

If you're OK with that, fine. If not, don't buy the book.

Fun and Interesting

Fun to read. It also caught the attention of my teenagers. It has many interesting facts that worked their way into meal time discussions and questions during a long road trip. It makes science into fun, and is a book equal to the Discovery and History Channels.

Alarmed by the lack of innovation in the United States today, former Harvard Business School professor and current consultant Kao diagnoses the situation, describes best practices, explains how innovation works and puts forth a strategy proposal, all in an attempt to squirt ice water in America's ear. Kao-who has been an entrepreneur, a psychiatrist, an educator and a pianist for Frank Zappa-is clearly passionate about his premise. Aimed primarily at policy makers and legislators, his three-pronged agenda is designed to help the government create a culture committed to constantly reinventing the nature of its innovation capabilities. However, his authoritative and history-rich book is not necessarily useful to the everyday reader, as Kao includes few small-scale strategies. His one effort to bring this down to the citizen's level-in fictional short stories about the future-is a little contrived, jamming in statistics and leaning on flashbacks. About the Author
John Kao is a leading expert on innovation. He taught a popular course on the subject at the Harvard Business School for fourteen years, has also served as a visiting professor at the MIT Media Lab, and as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Innovation at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. In addition, he is the founder of Kao & Company, which advises top-tier Fortune 500 business leaders as well as government leaders around the world. He has specialized in instructing organizations in the methods for making innovation happen. Dubbed "Mr. Creativity" by The Economist, he has started several companies, in areas as diverse as biotech and innovation management, and he is also a Tony-nominated executive producer of theater and film, including Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Nothing Innovative About this Book

For a book about Innovation, there is nothing Innovative about this book. The stories about Singapore, Finland and Ireland are well known and can be found in Business Week or Wall Street Journal. Yes, and well read readers will know that we are losing our innovation edge to China and India. No new information there. And, his answers are not new - use the internet, improve our education systems, entice outside talent, better offices, etc. In fact, I would even question his definition of innovation - jazz is innovative but classical music is not? He starts with the assertion that innovation is not just about technology and science and then labors onto technology and science. Further, at the end of this book, he used the "I" word so many times to emphasize his opinion, that I lost count of it. I can go on about this book, but let me leave it with this - this is the worst book on innovation that I have read. A lot of borrowing from others, a lot hype on what he will provide for solutions and then NO delivery. Don't waste your time on this book.

Kao, a skilled and knowledgeable writer, examines a imited set of U.S. policy problems

The author's book offers what may be considered by Europeans as a curiously anomalous idea: that the United States's main problems stem from insufficient innovation. Can one describe as lacking in innovation a nation that produces out-of-the-box ideas like community colleges, sending a man to the moon, Borlaug's green revolution, Internet, web browsers, CD ROM and DVD, Amazon.com - including its revolutionary introduction of reader reviews (no, I am not a paid agent for Amazon), Ebay, blogging, Apple products, and endless Nobel prize winners in biology and medicine?

Certainly, the nation's educational problem is dire. But does Kao really believe that innovation is the key to fixing the U.S.'s systematic deterioration in economy (deindustrialization), infrastructure, fiscal soundness, pension security; that clever ideas could deal with our anomalous levels of crime and violence compared with all nations of comparable GDP,political gridlock, or our degraded popular TV and entertainment media?

I might hire Kao to rev up innovation in my company if I were an industrialist, but I would not elect or appoint him to advise on public policy issues. Instead, I suggest that Kao may be a symptom of the fragmentation and willingness to settle for superficiality that has developed in the U.S. over the past 45 years.

The EU is not as flashy and exciting as the U.S. But it has evolved a civilized pattern of cooperation. It leads in environmental policy and acting on (not just writing or yelling about)global climate change. The Dollar is sinking ever lower with respect to the Euro (now trading at 1.55). Most citizens in European nations approaching or exceeding our GDP have greater security for the essentials in their lives than do a large fraction of Americans; and their industries are, by and large, outcompeting us, even buying out what remains in the U.S.

I suggest that innovation is now limited from being applied to critical areas like those I mentioned above because many educated, bright, and influential Americans in academia, politics, and business have short-range focus in their thinking. We don't seem to have much interest in looking at problems holistically, having humility, learning from history or other societies. I'm not sure which author I'd recommend instead of Kao, but I'm looking (and also writing, myself).

Good Start -

Between 2005-06, some 30,000 professionals left the U.S. to return to their native India; China has made encouraging the return of their educated expatriates a priority. Meanwhile, U.S. students continue to rank poorly, and innovation is increasingly becoming a government priority for other nations. In the U.S., however, we are becoming the Detroit of nations, taking the path of least resistance, basking in fading glory, and bogged down by old values and thinking. Example: The U.S. got a major 'free ride' from German immigrants in the 1940s, and mistakenly claimed their contributions as evidence of our superiority.

'Green" has become the new red, white, and blue - yet, is blocked by lack of consensus on need, impact, funding source, etc. The U.S. ranks 17th among 30 OECD nations on R&D tax incentives.

Large-firm CEOs have lately deinstitutionalized innovation, instead eg. buying upstart biotech firms with valuable technologies - innovation by M&A instead of R&D. Even more recently - deliberate outsourcing and offshoring of R&D.

Robert Solow won the Nobel Prize in economics demonstrating that as much as 80% of GDP growth comes from the introduction of new technologies. Similarly, Boston Consulting Group, in a study for BusinessWeek, found innovative companies achieved median profit-margin growth of 3.4%, vs. 0.4% for the S&P Global 1200 median. Disruptive change (eg. introducing the Sony Walkman, the PC) is much more important to boosting GDP than innovative improvement (eg. adding to Oreo's brand extensions, 'me too' drugs). Opportunities abound for disruptive innovation - addressing global warming, education, communicable diseases and cancer, energy sufficiency.

Some assorted background facts contained in "Innovation Nation:"

U.S. students rank 24th in math literacy and 26th in problem-solving ability. In 2005-06, 30,000 highly trained technology professionals left the U.S. to return to India; similar trends involve the brightest of other nations.

By 2010 experts estimate that Beijing will have the world's largest nanotech research infrastructure, with 10X as many researchers in one location as any comparable U.S. facility; the second largest will be in Shanghai.

The U.S. ranks 16th out of 17 nations in the proportion of 24-year-olds with degrees in natural science vs. other majors, according to the National Math and Science Initiative.

Intel's Barrett says a chip-making facility in Singapore is worth $1 billion more over ten years than an identical one in the U.S., largely because of more favorable tax policies.

In 2006 the Dept. of Defense identified 42 leading-edge technologies it was interested in - 20 were based outside the U.S.

Foreigners represent half of all U.S. graduate students in engineering and 40% of those in physical sciences. However, their numbers are dropping due to increasing alternatives (eg. Australia, China), increased difficulty getting visas, and rising costs in the U.S.

These are all good points to help raise awareness of the need for change. However, Kao's recommendations are too much more of the same - eg. spend more money on education.

We already spend 5.3% of GDP, vs. 1.9% for China, 3.5% Japan, 4.6% South Korea and Germany, 5.6% U.K., 7.2% Norway, and have doubled our inflation-adjusted per-pupil spending in the last 35 years - w/o improving either our drop-out rate or NAEP scores for 17-year-olds. Thus, more money for education is not the answer.

Tax policy changes would probably help. However, the biggest factor is the much lower labor costs overseas - eg. $200/month for factory workers laboring 80 hour-weeks in China. Outsourcing production work quickly takes with it the need and opportunity for factory management and engineering positions as well. Finally, skills in current areas often provide the gateway to mastering new technology - eg. TV tubes -> LCD, plasma, and OECLD flat-panel displays -> nanotubes (?), etc.

The other major problem is the U.S.'s phobia about government intervention. China, Japan, and South Korea have all had strong government leadership shaping their direction; the U.S., however, has not, and we have ended up outsourcing so many capabilities that we increasingly appear to be a "paper tiger" service economy, dominated by the finance industry (about 40% of our GNP).

The U.S. mints about 4,000 new PhDs in biological sciences each year; Singapore creates about 500/year, and is targeting 1,000 by 2015 - despite a population only 1/70th that of the U.S. Foreign recruitment (about 75% of 'Biopolis' staff are recruited from abroad) is aided by a relaxed attitude on stem-cell research. Singapore's government added environmental and water technologies as targeted areas in 2006, as well as interactive and digital media - all seen as big growth areas in Asia. Funding for high-caliber PhD students in these areas is offered if they agree to work in Singapore for at least six years - recipients don't even need to be natives.

Bottom-Line: "Innovation Nation" provides excellent examples of what other nations are doing. However, Kao grossly underestimates the difficulties in improving U.S. pupil achievement overall - we've tried for at least 35 years, with little or no impact. The basic unaddressed problem is that American pupils simply don't work hard enough, compared to their Asian peers. (Other sources also conclude that Asians, on average, rank nearly one standard deviation above average Americans on IQ tests.) Kao also errs when suggesting that impressive new projects (eg. Spain's new Guggenheim Museum) will revitalize surrounding areas - this logic has been followed thousands, if not millions, of times in the U.S., failing to make significant impact in almost every instance. Finally, Kao misses the need to point out how excessive expenditures in American health care, defense, etc. starve innovation.

As that plot unfolds, Barris introduces a welter of characters who are more like caricatures, among them widow Vera Bundle of Steubenville, Ohio, 77 and mourning her husband 50 years after his death; prostitute Retta Mae Wagons, the 170 IQ teenage daughter of a junkie; and Billy Constable, 19, late of Bowling Green, Ky., who has come to New York to seek his fortune. These three appear in the deadly broadcast that ends the book, but that's less the point than tuning in to the world according to Barris. (May)

Barris, game-show-king-turned-writer, turns in a virtuoso performance in his outrageous new novel. A retired game-show producer is accosted by a grubby old man, who offers to sell him an idea for a new show. In Barris' near-future world, assisted suicide is legal, and in the proposed new show, contestants either win $100 million or are executed on live television. The novel follows the lives of several potential contestants, including a teenage prostitute, an elderly woman, and an ex-con, but what makes the tale so fascinating--some might say warped--is that the grubby old man is none other than a down-and-out Barris himself. As usual, the author of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (1982) blurs the line between reality and fantasy, making us wonder just what the heck we're supposed to believe. And, while we're pretty sure Barris never produced a pilot for this particular game show, is it so hard to believe, what with the current state of reality TV, that someone might someday put something like this on the air? A darkly satirical, witty, and uncomfortably plausible novel. David Pitt

This book should be asked an unanswerable question

Again, I should learn about reading fiction. Have read three in the past few months, all three have been horrible reads. The only reason I finished them is that I have a rule about finishing a book once I start reading the book. One exception to that rule; The Diary of Anne Frank, too depressing to read.

This book has the annoying writing style of jumping, illogically, between characters, with little rhyme or reason for the back and forth. I consider myself quite able to follow story lines and plots. This book challenged that ability greatly. It would have been better to have dedicated specific sections to specific characters. Keeping track of characters was virtually impossible.

The author certainly did nothing in the writing of this book to dissuade anyone from the commonly accepted view that the author is an individual operating in a totally different realm of thought and consciousness and also that he bears a very bitter grudge against the industry in which he was a major player for decades. There is probably not a "game show" concept over about a three decades period in which he was not involved.

Reading the above, one might think the book deserves more than one star, trust me it doesn't. It is more a rant against the television industry than a serious literary work. It would be best if the book was given an unanswerable question. It might be more palatable to do what one is required to do if one misses the "big question," it certainly cannot be any less numbing than reading this book. If asking the " big question" seems drastic, gonging it would work just as well.

DECENT CHARACTERS, BUT NOT WORTH YOUR TIME

I've spent the last hour revising and rewriting this review just to erase it, in favor of keeping it short and simple. This book spends way too much time developing characters (which is a good thing 99% of the time) and not enough time constructing a decent climax and ending. The book completely falls apart in the end, and you are left wondering why you've spent so much time reading about characters, just to have them exit the book in such a random and haphazardly way(not necessarily dying, just in case you actually do feel like reading this book and you thought I just ruined it for you).

It's always a pleasure to see a new installment in the saga of Temperence Brennan, the forensic anthropologist who plies her trade in both Charlotte, North Carolina, and Montreal.

Devil Bones, set in the U S of A, opens with a grisly discovery that offers a very different take on This Old House. Tempe is pulled from staid academia to investigate the troubling and mystifying scene, which involves cauldrons, ceremonial religious artifacts and, most troubling, the severed head of a teenage girl.

Another torso is located nearby, and the story is off and running.

Tempe and Charlotte police department detective Erskine "Skinny" Slidell, follow leads that take them through the seamier and the chicer sides of North Carolina's largest city--the worlds of Santeria, voodoo, the Wiccan religion (any witches out there: I'm not lumping them together!), and male prostitution. Our heroine also locks horns with a crusading minister turned politician, and there's a reporter who manages to show up at all the wrong moments.

Reichs juggles the questions of who done it (and who's gonna get done next) until the very end with consummate skill. In series books, readers treat characters as friends and follow those storylines as ardently as the ones involving murder and mayhem. Not content to keep things simmering on low boil, Reichs dunks her protagonist into a pressure cooker, with plenty of turmoil stirred up by a former lover, a--possibly--current one and, most significantly for this reader, yet another ghost of life past, about which I'll say no more here. Trouble on campus also surfaces for Professor Brennan, with whom we experience one of the most harrowing moments in the book: a meeting of professors and department heads (university politics as weapon of mass destruction). Oh, and we can't forget some brief appearances by the ex, who is behaving just like, well, an ex.

It might have been my imagination but I believe too that I saw the bones, if you will, of a possible subplot involving Tempe's daughter, Katy, who's working in the public defender's office. I'm looking forward to seeing Reich confirm or deny this in the next installment.

In Devil Bones we get plenty of what we've come to expect in a Reichs novel: engrossing details on forensic anthropology and anatomical science. Her mastery, and love, of those subjects, which Reichs herself practices (in both Montreal and Charlotte, by the way), is evident in her writing. We're also treated to plenty of esoterica about non-mainstream religions and history (I mean, I live in North Carolina and didn't know Charlotte was named for a seventeen-year-old German duchess). The author deftly negotiates that fine line between using such information to enhance the experience of reading a novel and padding prose. She gives us what we need to know--to enrich plot, character or atmosphere--and then gets back to the story.

And speaking of which: As an author writing in the same genre, I was impressed with Reichs's ability to keep the roller coaster on track and speeding along, page after page. She's a true master of cliff hangers--a neglected skill in a field where far too many lazy authors end chapters with people leaving rooms, falling asleep or offering hand-tipping foreshadowings of what's to come. I call this the question-mark factor and when writing my thriller I actually tally up the number of scenes that end in a compelling, unresolved issue that drives the reader forward.

Reichs has question marks aplenty.

My one complaint: I read the novel in one sitting. But I'm hoping that while poor Tempe may want a break after everything that happens to her in Devil Bones, author Reichs isn't giving her any rest and is hard at work on number 12.

Linda Emonds crisp and dry vocal interpretation of Reichss Temperance Brennan, crime fictions second most popular forensic expert, is on target. The cool approach works fine when the 5'5", feisty and 40-plus heroine describes stumbling into a dark basement and finding a witches brew of pagan artifacts and human and animal remains. It lets Temperance and the listener calmly contemplate her jumbled, alcohol-prone, romantically impaired life. And it helps in sorting out the clues for several gruesome killings that may or may not be connected and may or may not involve what one character describes as a murderous devil conspiracy. But even Emond cant make Reichss endless side trips into North Carolina history, geographical key notes and descriptions of the roots of voodoo and the Wicca religion sound anything but academic. In an era when many mystery writers feel compelled to add forensics to their investigations but do so in a tentative, superficial manner, or when forensic scientists who move into fiction sometimes forge monstrous mixes of good science and bad fiction writing, Reichs is a standout on both counts. She’s a double hitter, who has both a deep knowledge of forensic science (Reichs is a forensic anthropologist and producer of the Fox TV hit Bones) and a formidable way of incorporating science with character and plot in her Temperance Brennan series. This time out, Brennan, an academic anthropologist with ties to the University of North Carolina, the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and a forensic lab in Montreal, concentrates on two grisly local discoveries. One is the torso of a teen boy in a river. The other is a basement in Charlotte, where a plumber finds the skull of a teenage girl and enough feathers, beads, and cauldrons to suggest some weird goings-on. Brennan’s brisk first-person narrative is often wryly funny, especially when she lambastes other academics and various forensic bureaucrats. Her expertise is snappily and entertainingly delivered. Deftly Plotted Mystery, Lots of Pagan Religion, Jammed with Medical Details, and No Romantic Movement

If you are a long-time fan of this series, I've written this review for you. You can skip this book if you want to. In terms of series continuity, I'm sure Dr. Reichs will be able to put in two sentences near the start of the next book to handle what happens in this one.

If you haven't read any books in the series, don't start with this one. Start with Deja Dead, a much better book.

If you like mysteries that are hard to solve as a reader, you will like Devil Bones much better than most readers. That's also true if you are fascinated by pagan religions and cannot get enough information about dead bodies.

On the other hand, if you want an entertaining story that's an easy read, you will probably think this is a two-star book. The book also features an easy-to-hate politician who makes the story less appealing. If you like to see Dr. Tempe Brennan's love life get somewhere, this book is pretty close to a zero.

Let's face it. We all have bad days. Tempe seems to be having one throughout this book. That also makes the book more of a downer than it had to be.

Tempe is called out when an apparent root cellar turns out to contain a human skull, associated with what looks like some sort of pagan religious rite. Tracking down the rest of that body becomes the focus of much of the story in Devil Bones. Soon thereafter, a body is dumped that displays satanic signs. Are the two events connected? How?

The investigation has many unexpected twists and turns, most of which wouldn't have happened if Tempe had been a little sharper in assessing one of the clues. If you are quicker than Tempe, you'll unravel the mystery faster than she did. But you'll probably miss the real criminal until all is revealed unless you have ESP.

I learned way too much about pagan religions and medical details from this book, but I liked the mystery being difficult to solve. So I rounded up from two stars to three.

Temperance Brennan, the forty-plus forensic anthropologist, explores alternative religions in "Devil Bones," the latest Kathy Reichs thriller. An employee of the state of North Carolina, Tempe is under contract to Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. She examines "the burned, decomposed, mummified, mutilated, dismembered, and skeletal." This time around, she has a great deal on her plate. First, she is called to a "chamber of horrors" containing human and animal remains and various objects, including cauldrons, statues, candles, and dolls pierced with miniature swords. Was this the site of some sort of satanic ritual? Next, a dog walker finds a headless body near a lake. The victim's torso had been carved up with various markings that might also point to a ritualistic killing. These findings set off a firestorm, fueled by hysterical media coverage and the ranting of a grandstanding politician named Boyce Lingo, who decries "murderous devil worshippers" allowed to go unpunished. Tempe is livid not only about the leaks, but about Lingo's wild speculation and baseless accusations.

Tempe, who teams up with Erskine "Skinny" Slidell, an unkempt but hard-working and insightful homicide detective, is destined for much grief as she tries to make sense of these seemingly unrelated cases. Not only are they bashed by Lingo and disreputable reporters, but they are also frustrated by contradictory evidence, a lack of credible witnesses, and leads that go nowhere. In addition, Tempe's personal life is in turmoil, as she struggles to come to terms with her alcoholism, her ex's engagement, and her mixed feelings for Andrew Ryan, the Montreal detective who stole her heart and then proceeded to break it.

In "Devil Bones," Reichs imparts a great deal of geographical, sociological, and historical lore about Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina, plus a great deal of information about maggots, putrefaction, and skeletal remains. The author's didacticism can be grating at times, although hard-core forensic junkies will most likely be fascinated by Reichs' detailed and exhaustive explanations. The plot is carefully constructed, albeit dizzying in its complexity. One of the book's main themes is the ubiquity in our country of such ideologies as Santeria, voodo, and Wicca. Are the practitioners of these unconventional belief systems harmless individuals who should be allowed to practice their faith in peace, or do they pose a threat to the population at large?

Although "Devil Bones" is exciting and suspenseful, it is far from realistic. In an interview, Reichs admits that it is rare for a forensic anthropologist to go into the field along with detectives to question witnesses and work cases from an investigative angle. Although the mysteries are involving enough, the story's most appealing angle is its focus on Tempe's midlife crisis. She cannot keep her opinions to herself, even when her boss orders her to be silent. She still has trouble avoiding alcohol and the oblivion it provides. In addition, she hates being alone, but is afraid to trust any man after the betrayals she has suffered. Anyone who has followed Tempe during her long and arduous journey will want to accompany her once again as she tries to solve some of the strangest puzzles she has ever encountered.

Not the Best of the Series

I have to come to expect so much more from the series than this book was able to offer. The historical background is dry and uninteresting, not the usual transfer of intriguing information by the author. It is not that the topic is not interesting to me as I am a practicing member of an earth-oriented religion. However the intellectual areas do not mesh with the interpersonal on a level I have come to expect from the author. The use of ending a paragraph negating all that was just written in terms of dire future events became annoying. Bringing an new romantic character and then not developing him at all was a letdown and the coming of Andrew Ryan into the storyline seem trite and contrived as if he was there as a useless appendage. His part was also never developed to satifaction. Lastly we have he ex-husband and dragging in all THAT involves with the half his age fiance' and again the developement was left undone. I think the book would have been better served to leave off so many personal demons, including the off the wagon drinking binge that happens and then is treated as if there were no physical effects and fewer mental ones. All in all it was an OK read, but not up to standards of the other Tempe Brennan novels.
