This handy reference provides history for a slew of terms and turns of phrases Americans use nearly every day. A Tennessee radio producer and on-air personality, Evins has been "collecting words, phrases, and expressions" for decades, and even self-published a version of this book nearly 15 years ago. Here, she expands on her original, starting at "A-1" ("More than a steak sauce...it was the highest rating that could be given a ship insured by Lloyd's of London") and ending with "zipper" ("trademarked by B.F. Goodrich in 1925...for a new line of waterproof overshoes"). Among others, Evins covers "peanut gallery," which originally referred "to the cheap seats...in the theaters of the Gay Nineties"; "fighting fire with fire," to try containing one prairie blaze by setting another; and "mind your p's and q's," dating back either to British pubs serving both pints and quarts, or to the early days of printing, when typesetters occasionally confused the two letters. In clear, brief and tidy prose, Evins provides interesting, occasionally fascinating tidbits for one English idiom after another, making this a small treasure trove for word-junkies, crossword puzzlers and other armchair linguists.

I thought this was a worthy companion to some of my other books on pop culture and aphorisms. It is a little short but contains a lot of well known and popular catchphrases. This book will give you plenty of "a-ha" moments. Well researched and clearly written. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

From Publishers Weekly
At the start of bestseller Jance's uninspired second Ali Reynolds thriller (after Edge of Evil), Ali's husband, Paul Grayson, is killed on the eve of their divorce—by a train that hits the car where he's tied up in the trunk somewhere near Palm Springs, Calif. Ali, Paul's legal beneficiary, becomes the chief murder suspect. A popular blogger and former Los Angeles TV news anchor who's suing the station where she used to work for wrongful dismissal, Ali initiates her own investigation, enlisting the help of her mother, grown son Chris and high school friend Dave Holman, a homicide detective in Sedona, Ariz., where Ali now lives. In a series of clumsy plot developments involving Paul's fiancée, April Gaddis, and April's greedy mother, Monique Ragsdale, Ali learns that Paul was financing a performance variety of the sumo sudoku puzzle fad. Full of endless blogs and superficial characters, this one will disappoint fans of Jance's expertly written and paced Joanna Brady and J.P. Beaumont mysteries. (Jan.)

Disappointing
By SDRTX
In this second Ali Reynolds book, she is finally getting her divorce from the philandering husband she refers to as Fang. She drives from Arizona to California only to find that her soon to-be-ex missed the meeting. He couldn't quite make because he was murdered the night before by being stuffed into a trunk of a car and left of the railroad track. You can imagine what happened. Ali is the prime suspect since she was alone on her drive which actually passed the crime scene, and since the murder occurred before the divorce, she inherits everything despite the pregnant fiancee in the picture. Ali's mother and police detective friend come to California to help her out of the mess.

I am a big JA Jance fan from the acclaimed Joanna Brady series to the grittier Beaumont series. Both of those series with their corresponding characters are highly anticipated by me. I did read the previous Ali Reynolds novel and while the story was not as good as the other series', I did like the cast of primary characters. I'm not sure what happened in this book. Again, I was really looking forward to reading this novel, but a few chapters in, I was wondering if I was actually reading a JA Jance book. I still liked Ali as a character, but that whole blog gimmick is not needed. I started skipping the blogs and the comments. I know this is a new era of technology and everyone and their mother has a blog, but don't use one in book. Boring. The story itself was totally ludicrous and ridiculous. It reminded me more of a Evanovich Stephanie Plum Novel than a JA Jance novel. Maybe that was the point since for some ungodly reason the Stephanie Plum novels are popular, but if it was, then JA took a wrong turn. Tripe maybe be popular, but it doesn't mean it's good. Bring back Joanna and Beau or write a traditional mystery for Ali. She deserves better.

Last comment--I think it is unacceptable when a book goes to press with blatant errors. Several times the character of Tracy was referred to as Terry, and the character of Jake was referred to as Jack.

The background for Ali Reynolds later novels.
By G. F. Klinglesmith
I like J. A. Jance very much and was surprised when I saw that this is the second book in the Ali Reynolds series. I am very happy that I bought it and read it.
This book fills in a lot I didn't know about Ali and her husband, Paul. Their pending divorce and what happened that changed every thing for Ail.
I do not want to say more, or I will spoil the story for you.
I highly recommend it, if you have not read ti before.

This book was not quite as good as the Book 1. It took me longer to get through with it because Jance went over the plot in too much detail. I was ready to get on with it. But it was worth the money to buy it. I had read several of her books in a row amd ,au have just been readi fpr spetjomg mew/

The Spartacus War, by Barry Strauss

The Spartacus War is the extraordinary story of the most famous slave rebellion in the ancient world, the fascinating true story behind a legend that has been the inspiration for novelists, filmmakers, and revolutionaries for 2,000 years. Starting with only seventy-four men, a gladiator named Spartacus incited a rebellion that threatened Rome itself. With his fellow gladiators, Spartacus built an army of 60,000 soldiers and controlled the southern Italian countryside. A charismatic leader, he used religion to win support. An ex-soldier in the Roman army, Spartacus excelled in combat. He defeated nine Roman armies and kept Rome at bay for two years before he was defeated. After his final battle, 6,000 of his followers were captured and crucified along Rome's main southern highway.

The Spartacus War is the dramatic and factual account of one of history's great rebellions. Spartacus was beaten by a Roman general, Crassus, who had learned how to defeat an insurgency. But the rebels were partly to blame for their failure. Their army was large and often undisciplined; the many ethnic groups within it frequently quarreled over leadership. No single leader, not even Spartacus, could keep them all in line. And when faced with a choice between escaping to freedom and looting, the rebels chose wealth over liberty, risking an eventual confrontation with Rome's most powerful forces.

The result of years of research, The Spartacus War is based not only on written documents but also on archaeological evidence, historical reconstruction, and the author's extensive travels in the Italian countryside that Spartacus once conquered.

From Publishers Weekly
No one presents the military history of the ancient world with greater insight and panache than Strauss (The Trojan War). His latest work tells the story of a slave from the Balkans, a gladiator who in 73 B.C. led an uprising of 700 gladiators that eventually attracted over 60,000 followers. Strauss depicts Spartacus as a charismatic politician, able to hold together a widely disparate coalition of Celts, Thracians, Germans and Italians. As a general, he was a master of maneuver and mobility, keeping the ponderous Romans consistently off balance. Strauss reconstructs the rebels' movements across southern Italy and their development into an army good enough to overcome Rome's legions in battle after battle. Not until Marcus Licinius Crassus was given command of Roman forces did Spartacus face an opponent who could match him. Spartacus forced a battle that resulted in complete defeat and his anonymous death. But the uprising he sparked left a permanent mark on the Roman psyche and made Spartacus himself a figure of myth as well as history, as Strauss shows at the end of this brisk, engrossing account. 8 pages of b&w illus., maps. From Booklist
The first-century BCE slave revolt against Rome was led by Spartacus, a Thracian-born gladiator who had previously served as a Roman auxiliary soldier. Spartacus and the struggle he led have served as the inspiration for movies, an opera, and several fictionalized accounts. He has also been adopted as a symbol of freedom by political movements of both the Left and Right. Yet the historical Spartacus remains a murky figure, while the details of the revolt remain subjects of historical dispute. Strauss, professor of history and classics at Cornell University, has made an admirable attempt to fill in some of the gaps in the historical record in a compelling but highly speculative effort. Strauss admits the lack of reliable primary sources has forced him to engage in some tricky conjectures regarding the character and motivation of Spartacus. Still, many of his assertions are credible, and his efforts to portray the political and social milieu of Italy during the late Republic are superbly done. Strauss sees Spartacus as a brave and charismatic leader who was limited by some personal shortcomings. --Jay Freeman

Review
"With his trademarks of extensive knowledge, insight, and great storytelling ability, Barry Strauss brings us as close as we can get to the enigmatic Spartacus, the slave who defied the Roman Republic." -- Adrian Goldsworthy, author of Caesar: Life of a Colossus

A Legend is Given Life
By Richard Masloski
This is a wonderful book. A page-turner. An eye-opener for those whose eyes are filled with the movie 'Spartacus.' In clear, exciting, often times poetic prose, Barry Strauss gives us the true story as best it may be known from the scant historic record. After all, as the quote goes, history is written by the victors. But did Spartacus truly lose in his heroic and daring bid for freedom from his Roman oppressors? His name remains vivid and vital on the lips of men down through the centuries unto our present day. He may have lost the war wherein he and his army of slaves held Rome at bay for two long years - but he most assuredly won the history writ in the heart of man. This book is tangible proof of that immortality.

The book reads as bravely and briskly as Spartacus fought for the freedom all peoples dream of. The only things that would have made the book all-the-better would have been a few maps outlining stategic movements in the gladiator-rebel's numerous battles with the enemy - especially of the last battle, speculative as it might have been to reconstruct. Also, there is a bit too much geographical description that, rather than clarifying key locations of the story, tend to confuse it. I would have liked to have learned more about Rome itself - it's history, it's day-to-day life in the days of Spartacus; also a deeper delving into the origins of crucifixion (which plays a huge part in the end game of the gladiatorial revolt) would have been welcome. Who first practiced it - and why? What actually kills a man on a cross? There is no analysis as to why the captured 6,000 did not fight to the death - or commit suicide - knowing what awaited them once they laid down or lost their weapons.

Despite these few matters, Mr. Strauss has given us the living man Spartacus whose Life is every bit as compelling as his Myth. Thumbs up on this one (even though we learn within the book that thumbs up actually signalled death for the defeated.)

Good bon, easy to read. Why I didn't give it 5 stars? Because I think there are many unproven assumptions. The book is well documented with numerous photographs and references for those who want to dig deeper into the subject.

Spartacus War
By Joe T.
Overall an excellent book. Reads well, nicely paced. The author has done a good job of telling a timeless story that is so often difficult to find enough factual material to base a discussion on.

Old Dogs: Are the Best Dogs, by Gene Weingarten

Featuring sixty black-and-white photographs of old dogs shot by Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer Michael S. Williamson and narrated by Washington Post staffer and columnist Gene Weingarten, this is a perfect collection for dog lovers that celebrates “man’s best friend.”

Anyone who has ever loved an old dog will love Old Dogs. In this collection of profiles and photographs, Weingarten and Williamson document the unique appeal of man's best friend in his or her last, and best, years.

This book is a tribute to every dog who has made it to that time of life when the hearing and eyesight begin to go, when the step becomes uncertain, but when other, richer traits ripen and coalesce. It is when a dog attains a special sort of dignity and a charm all his own.

If you've known a favorite old dog, you'll find him or her on these pages. Your dog might go by a different name and have a different shape, but you'll recognize him or her by the look in an eye or the contours of a life story. There is the dog who thinks he is a house cat; the herder, the fetcher, the punk and the peacock, the escape artist, the demolition artist, the patrician, the lovable lout, the amiable dope, the laughable clown, the schemer, the singer, the daredevil, the diplomat, the politician, the gourmand, and the thief. Plus, as a special bonus, you will find the first Latvian elkhounds ever photographed.

Old Dogs is a glorious gift book and a fitting tribute to that one dog you can't ever forget.

Honey, 10

Shanna solemnly passed the butcher knife to Lance, her 16-year-old son. Shanna was a recent widow, Lance, the new man of the house. It was Lance who had brought home the stray.

Shanna had heard about this breed, particularly ones hardened by the streets, trained to do God Knows What. She knew of a test to find out if a dog is too vicious to keep. The test is not without risk.

"I'm going to give her some food," Shanna said, "and then I'm going to suddenly take it away. If she attacks me, you have to kill her."

Shanna put down the bowl. Lance gripped the knife, white-knuckled, wary...

They laugh about it now, nine years later. Honey the pit bull, as sweet as her name.Copyright © 2008 by Gene Weingarten and Michael S. Williamson

Gene Weingarten's wonderful book
By Elsin A. Perry
Ben Franklin said nothing is certain, except death and taxes.

But here are two more certainties: you will cry when you read the last three words on page 13 and laugh when you read page 18 of "Old Dogs Are the Best Dogs" by Pulitzer Prize winners Gene Weingarten and Michael Williamson.

People love books about puppies. They're so cute and cuddly. But they have no real personalities yet, other than "cute and cuddly."

Old dogs, however, have their own distinctive personalities, quirks and traits, developed over a lifetime.

This captivating book is a tribute to our old dogs, our best friends.

Mr. Weingarten asked his readers at the Washington Post to tell him about their old dogs.

In the acknowledgments of "Old Dogs Are the Best Dogs," he thanks the countless people whose dogs had their pictures taken but didn't get into the book.

He writes, "For this omission we entirely blame the editors of Simon & Schuster, who, for reasons known only to them and for which they will no doubt have to answer in the Hereafter, balked at producing a 1,294-page book."

"Old Dogs Are the Best Dogs" combines a striking full-face, full-page photograph of each old dog (taken by Michael Williamson) with a narrative opposite each.

We meet Chester, the Pembroke Welsh corgi, on page 35. Herding is in that breed's DNA. What's a house dog to do?

Every morning, Chester takes his own personal flock downstairs, one at a time, in his mouth. There are eight of them, including little gingerbread man, large gingerbread man, purple teddy bear, and mousie. He deposits each member of his flock under the coffee table and ignores them the rest of the day. At bedtime, Chester takes all eight of his flock upstairs, one by one. His daily job is done, his destiny fulfilled.

Sparky, page 135, kept gaining weight. Her owners were puzzled. Finally they realized that when she'd wake them at three every morning to be let out, "She'd take a long time. Turned out she was going next door, walking into our neighbor's house through the dog door and eating all their dog food."

The story of Harry S Truman in the front of the book is the most loving, moving tribute to an old dog I've ever read. (This is the narrative with the "last three words" mentioned above.) Harry S Truman was the author's dog.

Gene Weingarten writes at the beginning of the book, "This is a tribute to old dogs, a celebration of their special virtues. All dogs profiled in this book were at least 10 years old when their portraits were made. If you ask us which of them are still alive, our answer is: They all are. May old dogs live forever."

You'll love "Old Dogs Are the Best Dogs", even if you've never been owned by a dog.

Old Dogs... so true!
By John C. Maldaner III
As an adopter of old dogs, I was referred to this book by the foster Mom of my latest additions. The book did not disappoint! Have a kleenex handy. The first story is the most touching, but I liked them all. I am passionate about this subject matter. I am sure that is why this book remains on our coffee table. It is a good feeling to pick it up and re-read a story now and then. For those of you considering adopting a dog, give the seniors more than a passing glance. They are a secret many folks don't consider.

The Bell Messenger: A Novel, by Robert Cornuke

A suspenseful yet touching story of a Civil war Bible that pops up again and again over a century and shapes the very history of the nation.

This rich and involving historical and archeological thriller begins as a Union soldier, Tate, shoots a Confederate preacher known as the Bell Messenger and is bequeathed a worn Bible by the dying man. Tate's historical narrative parallels the contemporary story of John Brandon, who has just graduated college in 2000 and received the very same Bible, unearthed in a Saudi Arabian cave, as a gift.

The potent history of this book is revealed as Brandon searches for its previous owners, along the way uncovering the existence of a mysterious cache of gold hidden during Old Testament times -- which brings shadowy figures hot on Brandon's heels, hungry for the gold and desperate to learn the new clues he possesses.

As the past and present intertwine, the reader learns that this Bible has passed through many hands over the years. From the Civil War to the building of the Central Pacific Railroad, to the gang wars and the holding of Chinese slaves in nineteenth-century California, to the trenches of World War I, Brandon learns of the lives this Bible has saved, the deaths it has caused, and the history it has changed forever.

Cornuke is the real Indiana Jones, and a master storyteller, too.
By SIG
Cornuke's new book is an exciting page-turner that is a travelogue to exotic places and times. But this is more than a great historic novel with clashing cultures and adventure. The central foil of this story is not a person, but an old Bible which is the vehicle Cornuke uses to explore the lives of people who come in contact with it, starting in the Civil War and ending in our modern day. The story jumps back and forth in time, but is never confusing. Cornuke's casual writing style belies his extensive research and personal on-site experience with the locales and people featured in this riveting new book. His characters come alive as real people with likable personalities who face the kind of moral dilemmas and incremental decisions that transform people into heroes or villains; the small steps which we later recognize as leading to strengthened character or turning points preceding personal decline.

A master storyteller, Cornuke is able to add amazing depth to his fictional characters who come across as authentic, probably because they are, in reality, compilations of real people encountered by the author during his years as a police Crime Scene Investigator and SWAT team member in the L.A. area, or more recently as an adventurer in Africa and the Middle East. After leaving police work, Cornuke became the real-life Indiana Jones around the same time that Harrison Ford made the role popular. Cornuke's real archeological adventures rival anything Hollywood imagined for their fictional hero, which makes it possible for Cornuke to develop characters that are plausible, and a storyline that is rife with excitement.

I give "The Bell Messenger" a strong two-thumbs-up recommendation. I can't wait for Cornuke's next novel which I understand will be even better than this one - a feat that is hard to imagine since his first effort in this genre is already in the I-couldn't-put-it-down category.

Introduction

What is Body Clutter, anyway? When you look at your house, sometimes you can see the clutter. Then there are times when you are immune to your clutter; it can be right in front of you and you don't see it. It starts gradually slipping in your door while the other stuff you already have is just waiting to be loved. Eventually clutter gains a foothold and you don't know where to start to get rid of it. It seems like such an overwhelming task; what is a person supposed to do with all this stuff?

Over the years, the same thing has happened to our body. As children, our little child brain and body absorbed every word and morsel of food that came even close to us. We were starving for knowledge and attention, and our tiny body needed love, food, and movement to continue to grow. Some of the messages told us that we could have it "all," while others said, "If you don't do it right, don't do it at all." We were stuck wanting it "all" and afraid even to try because what if we failed? Then you toss in the time factor of perfectionism and you will find the ultimate killer of souls: procrastination. "I don't have time!" That is, we don't have time to do it right, so we do nothing at all.

This thought process is part of our Body Clutter. It is one of our many attitudes that have helped us to collect the clutter that is on our thighs, tummy, and backside. Just like with our homes, our body did not become cluttered overnight. It took years of stinking thinking to collect our Body Clutter. It happened so gradually that the only time we really noticed was when we had to reach for a larger dress size. Do you remember the horror the first time you got a bigger size? Are you immune to it now?

This book is not one of those magic pills you have been searching for. It has been a difficult journey for us, but we have celebrated every BabyStep we have taken. With each step we have released some of our negative thinking and with it the hold on our physical Body Clutter.

Over the years we have collectively lost and gained millions of pounds; we are good at starving ourselves and losing the weight when we are forced into decluttering for a special occasion. Anytime you declutter for the wrong reasons, the clutter is going to come back and usually increase. We have all done the stash-and-dash around the house to get ready for a visit from our mother-in-law. That is what we do to our body, too.

The age-old problem for anyone who has ever been on a "diet" is how to keep the pounds off once you are no longer depriving yourself. Leanne and I believe with all our hearts that the answer to this problem is not in the future but in the past. If we can figure out for ourselves how we acquired the Body Clutter in the first place and the attitude that put it there, then we are a step closer to eliminating it from our body. If we declutter the negative thinking first, it is going to help us stop gaining more Body Clutter. Then, by replacing our negative thought patterns with positive ones, we will gradually decrease the Body Clutter we already have.

Here is what happens when we don't declutter our negative attitudes. We decide to lose weight for whatever reason, we lose a few pounds, then something upsets us and we fall back into our old childhood habits of reaching for a "comfort cookie." It happened to me just the other day. I got my feelings hurt and I cried. I was crushed, and the first thought I had was to look in the freezer for a chocolate ice pop. What made me do that? It was almost instinctive! Immediately I saw it for what it was: a Band-Aid to comfort my hurting soul. This is how I used to deal with my hurt feelings; I would head to the refrigerator to stuff my face so I would not have to deal with what was really wrong. Before, I would not have been able to stop myself because I didn't know that my eating in response to feeling hurt was just as abusive as the comment that hurt my feelings in the first place. I just wanted to feel better and stop crying. This kind of behavior is not only instinctive but also very human.

When we are babies and we cry, what happens? We get fed. When we misbehave in the grocery store, we are given a cookie to keep us quiet. Do you see the pattern here? It starts out as instinctual but ends up creating a pattern for self-destructive behavior. We are going to learn to recognize this Body Clutter for what it is -- self-abuse.

Several years ago I began to FLY (Finally Loving Yourself), but it did not happen overnight. In fact, I am still learning how to love myself in almost every area of my life. My first BabySteps were about getting rid of the clutter and CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) in my life. I wanted to feel good about my home, but that is really hard to do when you are not feeling good about yourself.

It all started with shining my sink, and from that starting point, I began to take better care of my outward appearance, too. There is just something about walking into the bathroom and smiling at what you see in the mirror. It is kind of like going into your kitchen the morning after you have shined your sink for the first time -- that smile radiates to the core of your being and it continues to surprise you each time you go into the kitchen and see your shining sink. Body Clutter is painful. Leanne and I have both suffered from the ridicule and snide comments. Those hurtful words and looks do not make us who we are. We wrote this book to help you find peace. Peace with food, movement, and, most of all, the attitude that has created your Body Clutter. We look in your faces and know that you are suffering just like we are. This book is our journey. It is because of you that we were able to address our own Body Clutter, and we thank you for that. We have given you our hearts and pray that our journey will help you release your own Body Clutter.

I have struggled with my weight since the birth of my first child. The battle began after I gained more than fifty pounds with my daughter, and then gave birth to my son less than two years later. At that point my weight became more of a concern than I ever wanted it to be.

I had lost a baby the prior year to miscarriage, so when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I was determined to be the healthiest pregnant mom on the planet. First up on my be-healthy list was my diet. Prepregnancy, I ate erratically and only when my blood sugar crashed, and when I did eat I would pig out. I was a very picky eater who didn't like vegetables, but I trained myself to eat all of them -- and like them! I ate regular meals but was overcome by the myth of eating for two and continued to pig out at each meal as if it were my last. Sundays after church became an excuse to belly up to a double cheeseburger, sides of fries and onion rings, and don't forget the chocolate shake! That was my splurge day, never mind that I had been splurging all week! I gained fifty-two pounds and ultimately gave birth to a nearly ten-pound baby.

With my second pregnancy, a new interest in nutrition helped keep my weight gain down to a manageable twenty-seven pounds. Unfortunately, the previous pregnancy's weight was still firmly in place.

I decided to become a nutritionist right after the birth of my son. The funny thing is that at the time I wasn't even interested in nutrition for myself. I just wanted to raise my children in a healthy manner.

The certification course I was taking would normally take two years to complete, but it took me only six months. My mentors, whom the school assigns its students, couldn't believe I was going through everything so rapidly, but I was determined to get it done ASAP so I would be qualified to feed my children healthy meals, as well as help other mothers with nutrition issues.

In between taking care of two babies, I studied twelve hours a day, often staying up till one or two in the morning. It was awful, but I did get my certification, I did feed my children an unbelievably healthy diet, and I began taking clients for consultations, and speaking to preschools and anyone who would book me. I was on a crusade to tell the world how to feed their children, and yet my bottom continued to bloom into plus sizes. Ironically, I knew that I was talking the talk and not walking the walk, yet at the time it was all about the children.

The interesting thing about Body Clutter is that it's always there for a reason. It isn't just about overeating or not getting enough exercise. The reasons can vary, but getting to the heart of the matter and finding out why the Body Clutter is there in the first place can be the first step toward liberation. FlyLady and I, and more and more women just like us, are finding this out for ourselves; we have embarked on a journey together and the lightbulbs of enlightenment are going on all over the place. We want to share with you what we have discovered and have been implementing along the way.

One of the most comforting things I learned was that who I am does not equal my dress size. I am a unique woman, a child of God, with talents, gifts, and abilities that reach beyond the superficiality of size. I hope that when I'm gone, the things said about me will never be about my weight, the size of my jeans, or what color lipstick I wore. Instead, I hope they will say things about my character and that I was a good mom and a good friend. I am blessed with friends and family who love me as I am.

However, there is always room for improvement. One of the neatest things about the journey of life is the ability to redefine oneself. Self-assessment can be painful at times, but all growing pains lead to growth, which is the important thing. If we are not growing, we are stagnating and, to me, that's a fate worse than death.

So we go forward on the journey, recognizing that it is a learning process, an opportunity for growth, and that it may be painful at times. Sometimes the progress is amazing and noticeable; other times, it's one step forward and ten steps back. With the right tools, attitude, and a little knowledge, we can go all the way and really learn how to FLY...

Give it a Try!
By Improv Mom
If you tried everything, and nothing works, try this. If you know all the "right stuff" to do to lose weight (what to eat, how to exercise, etc.) but can't seem to do it, try this. If you're overwhelmed and don't know where to begin, try this. If you look in the mirror, or stand in front of your closet and cry with unhappiness, it's time to change. Get to the root of the problem and deal with the issue, not the consequence. Your weight issues are only the symptoms, not the "real" problem. I love the Zig Ziglar term "stinkin' thinkin'." This book will help you discover what your stinkin' thinkin' is, how you got it, and how to change it. When you change your thinking, you will change your WHOLE self...it will come, I promise! Learn how to "FLY" - Finally loving yourself. Check out the Flylady website while you're at it. She's amazing!

An author that has changed and improved my life
By P. Manoogian
I've read both Sink Reflections and Body Clutter, and I am a member on the FlyLady website - and I testify this author has helped me. Every day I've dealt with many things that get to me - I don't think a woman can get to middle age and not have a load of body clutter and mind clutter, and bits of perfectionism that lead us to be very unhappy. But every day I now find bright spots. I'm far less critical of myself, my family or work or situations that in past would keep me up all night. I find it easier now to be happy with myself and my life, and I can see myself being happy in the future, so I don't feel this is short term happiness. I thank both authors for improving my life, and the lives of my family!

Please buy this book, take your time reading and thinking on it, and join the Flylady website. :)

A Life changer, not a quick fix
By Lynn
I've read most or all of her books. What makes this special is that she's just like all of us and has found the key to a better life. I've been "flying" for almost a year. I fight routine, being told what to do, etc. You are not required to do anything except look at what you want and learning to get it that you must make some decisions for yourself, no one else. It is priceless. This is a gentle, loving method to a better life; it's not about getting skinny. It's about finding peace with yourself, your life, and who you are, as well as, no matter what your situation (handicapped, well-educated, poor, rich, beautiful) how to love yourself. Not an easy task for many of us. Best of all, you don't have to go anywhere, pay anyone, buy anything to be a "flybaby". (The book is probably in your local library!) Read it and make what you want of it. It's your life.

The Heroines: A Novel, by Eileen Favorite

Although a true lover of books, Anne-Marie Entwhistle prefers not to read to her spirited daughter, Penny, especially from the likes of Madame Bovary, Gone With the Wind, or The Scarlet Letter. These novels, devoted to the lives of the Heroines that make them so irresistible, have a way of hitting too close to home -- well, to the Homestead actually, where Anne-Marie runs the quaint family-owned bed and breakfast.

In this enchanting debut novel, Penny and her mother encounter great women from classic works of literature who make the Homestead their destination of choice just as the plots of their tumultuous, unforgettable stories begin to unravel. They appear at all hours of the day and in all manners of distress. A lovesick Madame Bovary languishes in their hammock after Rodolphe has abandoned her, and Scarlett O'Hara's emotions are not easily tempered by tea and eiderdowns. These visitors long for comfort, consolation, and sometimes for more attention than the adolescent Penny wants her mother to give.

Knowing that to interfere with their stories would cause mayhem in literature, Anne-Marie does her best to make each Heroine feel at home, with a roof over her head and a shoulder to cry on. But when Penny begins to feel overshadowed by her mother's indulgence of each and every Heroine, havoc ensues, and the thirteen-year-old embarks on her own memorable tale.

Eileen Favorite's lively, fresh, and enormously entertaining novel gives readers a chance to experience their favorite Heroines all over again, or introduces these fictional women so beguilingly that further acquaintance will surely follow. Narrated by the courageous and irreverent Penny, The Heroines will make book lovers rejoice.

From Publishers Weekly
On a picturesque acreage near Prairie Bluff, Ill., 13-year-old Penny Entwistle, and her mother, Anne Marie, run a retreat where literary heroines seek temporary refuge from their tragic destinies. Franny Glass, Madame Bovary, Scarlett O'Hara, Catherine Linton and others find respite from their varied crises, but must return to their books eventually and suffer the fate that awaits. Penny, in the first throes of teenage rebellion, has little patience for her mother and the heartbroken or otherwise distraught women Anne Marie refuses to counsel (lest she change the course of their stories). And Anne Marie lavishes on her heroine lodgers the attention her daughter longs for. But when a mythical Celtic knight arrives, searching for his lost heroine Deirdre, Penny gets caught up in a web of deception that lands her in the loony bin. While the staff diagnoses her fabulous story as an attempt to deal with the long-ago death of her father, her mother commits Penny as a means of protecting her from peculiar goings-on at the house, and Penny must rely on the very fictional characters her mother favors to help her. Favorite offers a fun take on the impact literature can have on our lives. (Jan.)

Not the story that was advertised ...
By Beachgrrl
I was so disappointed in this I hardly know where to begin.

This mess of a book, though well-written, tried to do too many things at once. It begins with a charming concept: Heroines from famous books suddenly appear at the bed & breakfast run by 13 year-old Penny Entwhistle's mother, Anne-Marie. While Anne-Marie coddles and comforts the Heroines, being careful not to divulge their ultimate fates or plot lines to them, Penny rages and rebels over her mother's neglect. When a Hero arrives to reclaim his Heroine (a very unusual event), things start to get interesting. This was a grand start to what I imagined would be a wonderful romp of a story, but then the book suddenly veered into (as another reviewer here so aptly described it) 'Girl, Interrupted' territory, sending Penny into a horrifying psych ward for no apparent reason. The story just gets more and more jumbled from there.

Is this a fantasy about literary Heroines appearing in real life? Is it a gritty girl-trapped-in-the-looney-bin drama? Is it some sort of Freudian tale meant to have Serious Deeper Meaning (images of fatherless girls, forests, and puberty abound)? Why are there every-other-chapter references to Nixon and Watergate that do nothing to move the story along? Are the brief appearances of the Heroines real or imagined? The final straw for me was the tale of Penny's real father, which just tipped the whole thing over the edge into a complete muddle.

Worst of all, however, is the incredibly misleading story synopsis on the back of the book. I just felt cheated. This would have been a much better story if the author had just stuck to her original idea: the mayhem -- charming, chaotic or otherwise -- that results when figures from famous books come to call.

This Isn't Your Usual Retreat
By Nancy
The whole time I was reading this book I kept thinking that I was missing something. There is something here that I'm not seeing. Well, there was, but it wasn't what I was expecting, which is what kept me reading even though it was a little too late.

13 year old Penny Entwhistle is growing up in a Illinois prairie bed and breakfast with her mother Anne-Marie and housekeeper Gretta This isn't your usually retreat, this is the place that literary heroines such as Emma Bovary, Scarlett O'Hara and Catherine Earnshaw go to regroup when their lives are in distress. They come to Anne-Marie who strengthens them and encourages them back to their lives without interfering with the eventual plots of each story.

Anne-Marie is very strict in her belief that the heroines are not to be told the truth about the outcome of their fates in the book. But then one night a hero appears and thus changes the whole routine. What will have to be sacrificed to make the dangerous man return to his world? What truths will have to be told about the past?

What started out as an interesting plot turned me off when it branched into a sudden trek into Girl, Interrupted. That part which takes up a good portion of the book, just was lost on me. If Favorite had just stuck with the sudden arrivals of the Heroines and their stories it would have been, in my opinion, a much better book.

great weekend read on the couch
By Gayle
When I pick up a novel, I want to go somewhere else. Completely. Ensconced in Favorite's midwestern B&B/heroines world right from the start, I found I didn't want to leave this place until I turned every last page of plots within plots, savoring lovely writing all along the way. Penny has a strong narrative voice--in turns witty, troubled, introspective, defiant, vulnerable--that's easy to hitch onto. Anchoring lively scenes with just the amount of detail that makes the fantastic believable, Favorite maintains a seamless line between reality and unreality. Reading this novel reminds me why I stopped with a Master's in English and didn't continue on with a soul-killing Ph.D: Postmodern scholarship sucks the magic out of literature, out of stories, out of imagining. The Heroines is a good, strong story, but also playful metafiction, an antidote to dusty notions of what stories are and should be. This one is a book-lover's delight. And it was such fun seeing Scarlett O'Hara and Blanche duBois again I had to rent the movies the next weekend to continue the escape.
